Thesis (PhD(Communication))--University of South Australia, 2018. Includes bibliographical references (pages 145-164) This research is situated within the disciplinary fields of communication design and design activism specifically, investigating how communication design activism can contribute to children’s active and critical engagement with sustainable consumption. In order to develop design interventions encouraging young people’s engagement with sustainable consumption, this research study initially examines how children are currently situated within corporate contexts of consumption discourses. Secondly, this study provides an overview of design activist frameworks and artefacts, including analysis of specific exemplars situated to engage young people. Thirdly, this research project examines how children understand consumption and sustainable consumption by involving them in fieldwork—collaborative making of visual narratives about consumption—as a means of informing the development of alternative communication design activist approaches engaging children in sustainable consumption.
