This project aims to re-examine the Vernacular Language Movement and Chinese Translation Literature by applying topic modeling to a preface collection. Our corpus includes 2314 prefaces of translated works in Chinese from 1894 to 1938. We can observe three different stages in the VLM.

Bias in perceptual decision making may either has a sensory or a decisional origin. Dissociating these two biases has been a challenge. Here we will address this issue by comparing observers’ “beliefs” and “seeing” for the Flashed Face Distortion Effect (FFDE), a visual illusion where faces are perceived as distorted when presented continuously for a period of time. To quantify the sensory bias, we will create images of objectively distorted faces and ask participants to judge whether they subjectively saw either of the last two faces as distorted on either the left or right of fixation, with a more liberal response criterion indicating a stronger FFDE. Confidence and reaction time of the judgment will also be measured. Participants’ ratings of the level of distortion will also be collected after each trial. We will recruit 27 participants for the face distortion judgment task. The results of this experiment will be compared to those of an earlier study we ran, where we asked participants to judge whether either of the last two faces was objectively distorted. The current study will enable us to investigate how the sensory vs. decisional bias changes with time.
