The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO or JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Located near a reactor of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum with an unprecedented energy resolution of $$ < 2 % at 1 MeV. Energy calibration is critical to achieve such a high energy resolution. Using the Automated Calibration Unit (ACU) and the Cable Loop System (CLS), multiple radioactive sources are deployed to various positions in the TAO detector for energy calibration. The residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.2%. The energy resolution degradation and energy bias caused by the residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.05% and 0.3%, respectively. The uncertainty of the non-linear energy response can be controlled within 0.6% with the radioactive sources of various energies, and could be further improved with cosmogenic $$^{12}{\textrm{B}}$$ 12 B which is produced by the interaction of cosmic muon in the liquid scintillator. The stability of other detector parameters, e.g., the gain of each Silicon Photo-multiplier, will be monitored with an ultraviolet LED calibration system.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is an experiment under construction in China with the primary goal of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) with reactor anti-neutrinos. The JUNO detector system consists of a central detector, an active veto system and a calibration system. The central detector is a 35 m diameter transparent acrylic sphere containing a 20 kton liquid scintillator neutrino target. A primary photo-detection system consisting of 18,000 large (20” diameter) dynode and micro-channel plate photomultipliers surrounds the central detector. A second interlaced photo-detection system is made of 25,600 small (3” diameter) photomultipliers working in the single photo-electron regime for the reactor anti-neutrino detection. The detector is designed to achieve an unprecedented energy resolution of 3% @1MeV and an absolute energy scale uncertainty better than 1%. A veto system, consisting of a water Cherenkov detector and a top tracker, is used help maximally remove cosmogenic backgrounds. Due to its unprecedented scale and precision, JUNO will be an exceptional multipurpose detector with a rich physics program in neutrino oscillation , geo-neutrinos, astrophysical neutrinos and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (sterile neutrinos, dark matter, proton decay and others).

International audience; A well-adapted visible and infrared spectrograph has been developed for the SNAP (SuperNova/Acceleration Probe) experiment proposed for JDEM. The primary goal of this instrument is to ensure the control of Type Ia supernovae. The spectrograph is also a key element for calibration and is able to measure redshift of some thousands of galaxy spectra both in visible and IR. An instrument based on an integral field method with the powerful concept of imager slicing has been designed and is presented. We present the current design and expected performances. We show that with the current optimization and the proposed technology, we expect the most sensitive instrument proposed on this kind of mission. We recall the readiness of the concept and of the slicer technology thanks to large prototyping efforts performed in France which validate the proposition

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is a 20 kton liquid scintillator low radioactive multi-purpose detector under construction at 700 meter deep underground in China. Its physics goal includes determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and also measure the solar neutrino oscillation parameters with a sub-percent precision. The light produced in the liquid scintillator will be measured with 18,000 20-inch large photomultipliers, but also with 25,600 3-inch photomultipliers in the gaps between the large ones. This secondary system will operate in the photon-counting mode for energy below 10 MeV, providing a semi-independent measurement system to disentangle possible energy reconstruction systematics. The 3-inch photomultipliers will be connected to 200 electrical junction boxes deployed underwater. The boxes are able to power and readout 128 photomultipliers. A dedicated 128 channel readout front-end board based on the CATIROC ASIC chip has been developed and successfully prototyped.
