Perinatal piglet mortality is an important factor in pig production from economic and animal welfare perspectives; however, the statistical analysis of mortality is difficult because of its categorical nature. Recent studies have suggested that a binomial model for the survival of each specific piglet with a logit approach is appropriate and that recursive relationships between traits are useful for taking into account non-genetic relationships with other traits. In this study, the recursive binomial model is expanded in two directions: (1) the recursive phenotypic dependence among traits is allowed to vary among groups of individuals or crosses, and (2) the binomial distribution is replaced by the multiplicative binomial distribution to account for over or underdispersion. In this study, five recursive multiplicative binomial models were used to obtain estimates of the Dickerson crossbreeding parameters in a diallel cross among three varieties of Iberian pigs [Entrepelado (EE), Torbiscal (TT), and Retinto (RR)]. Records (10, 255) from 2110 sows were distributed as follows: EE (433 records, 100 sows), ER (2336, 527), ET (942, 177), RE (806, 196), RR (870, 175), RT (2450, 488), TE (193, 36), TR (1993, 359), and TT (232, 68). Average litter size [Total Number Born (TNB)] and number of stillborns (SB) were 8.46 ± 2.27 and 0.25 ± 0.72, respectively. The overdispersion was evident with all models. The model with the best fit included a linear recursive relationship between TNB and the logit of ¿ of the multiplicative binomial distribution, and it implies that piglet mortality increases with litter size. Estimates of direct effects showed small differences among populations. The analysis of maternal effects indicated that the dams whose mothers were EE had a larger SB, while dams with RR mothers reduced the probability of born dead. The posterior estimates of heterosis suggested a reduction in SB when the sow is crosbred. The multiplicative binomial distribution provides a useful alternative to the binomial distribution when there is overdispersion in the data. Recursive models can be used for modeling non-genetic relationships between traits, even if the phenotypic dependency between traits varies among environments or groups of individuals. Piglet perinatal mortality increased with TNB and is reduced by maternal heterosis.

Background and study aims Approximately 11% of biliary cannulations are considered difficult. The double guidewire (DGW-T) and transpancreatic sphincterotomy (TPS) are two useful techniques when difficult cannulation exists and the main pancreatic duct is unintentionally accessed. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and security of both DGW-T and TPS techniques in difficult biliary cannulation. Methods We conducted a systematic review in different databases, such as PubMed, OVID, Medline, and Cochrane Databases. Were included all RCT which showed a comparison between TPS and DGW in difficult biliary cannulation. Endpoints computed were successful cannulation rate, median cannulation time, and adverse events rate. Results Four studies were selected (4 RCTs). These studies included 260 patients. The mean age was 64.79 +/- 12.99 years. Of the patients, 53.6% were men and 46.4% were women. The rate of successful cannulation was 93.3% in the TPS group and 79.4% in the DGW-T group (P = 0.420). The rate of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP) was lower in patients who had undergone TPS than DGW-T (TPS: 8.9% vs DGW-T: 22.2%, P = 0.02). The mean cannulation time was 14.7 +/- 9.4 min in the TPS group and 15.1 +/- 7.4 min with DGW-T (P = 0.349). Conclusions TPS and DGW are two useful techniques in patients with difficult cannulation. They both have a high rate of successful cannulation; however, the PEP was higher with DGW-T than with TPS.

Objective Pancreatic stones result from chronic pancreatitis and can occur in the main pancreatic duct, pancreatic branches or parenchyma. Although extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is considered the first-line treatment, per-oral pancreatoscopy (POP) has emerged as a useful method for treating pancreatic stones. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy and safety of POP-guided lithotripsy, electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) and laser lithotripsy (LL), in patients with pancreatolithiasis. Methods Literature review was conducted in PubMed, OVID, MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases for studies published up to August 2020. Results Altogether 15 studies were analyzed, of which 11 were retrospective and four were prospective. The studies comprised 370 patients, of whom 66.4% were male. The patients underwent 218 EHL and 155 LL. The pooled technical and clinical success rate of the overall POP was 88.1% and 87.1%. For EHL-POP, the pooled technical success rate was 90.9% (95% CI 87.2%-95.2%) and the pooled clinical success rate was 89.8% (95% CI 87.2%-95.2%). While for LL-POP, the pooled technical and clinical success rate was 88.4% (95% CI 85.9%-95.1%) and 85.8% (95% CI 80.6%-91.6%). In total 43 adverse events occurred (12.1%; 95% CI 8.7%-15.5%). Conclusion POP-guided lithotripsy has a high rate of technical and clinical success for managing pancreatolithiasis with a low complication rate. Both EHL-POP and LL-POP achieve similar efficacy in the endoscopic therapy of pancreatolithiasis. Further large randomized controlled trials are needed to compare EHL-POP and LL-POP with ESWL and evaluate whether POP may replace ESWL as the first-line management of pancreatolithiasis.

Background and study aims Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCL), are a heterogeneous group of cystic lesions. Some patients with PCLs have a significantly higher overall risk of pancreatic cancer and the only test that can differentiate benign and malignnat PCL is fine-needle aspiration plus cytological analysis, but its sensitivity is very low. Through-the-needle direct intracystic biopsy is a technique that allows acquisition of targeted tissue from PCLs and it may improve the diagnostic yield for them. The aim of this study was to review articles about endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided through-the-needle intracystic biopsy for targeted tissue acquisition and diagnosis of PCLs. Methods A systematic review of computerized bibliographic databases was carried out for studies of EUS-guided through-the-needle forceps biopsy (EUS-TTNB) of PCLs. The percentages and their 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for all the considered endpoints (technical success, adequate specimens, adverse events (AEs), and overall diagnosis). Results Overall, eight studies with a total of 423 patients were identified. Pooled technical success was 95.6 % of the cases (399/423), (95 % CI, 93.2 %-97.3 %). Technical failure rate was 5.1 % (24 cases). Frequency of adequate specimens was 82.2 %, (95 % CI, 78.5 %-85.8 %). Adverse events were reported in seven of the eight studies. Forty-two total adverse events were reported (10.1 %) (95 % CI, 7.3 %-13.6 %). The overall ability to provide a specific diagnosis with EUS-TTNB for diagnosis of pancreatic cystic lesions was 74.6 % (313 cases), (95 % CI: 70.2 %-78.7 %). The most frequent diagnoses found with EUS-TTNB were mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN) in 96 cases (30.6 %), IPMN in 80 cases (25.5 %), and serous cystoadenoma neoplasm (SCN) in 48 cases (15.3 %). Conclusions Through-the-needle forceps biopsy appears to be effective and safe, with few AE for diagnosis of pancreatic cystic lesions. This technique had acceptable rates of technical and clinical success and an excellent safety profile. TTNB is associated with a high tissue acquisition yield and provided additional diagnostic yield for mucinous pancreatic lesions. TTNB may be a useful adjunctive tool for EUS-guided assessment of PCLs.

[EN] Individual-specific hidden inbreeding depression load (IDL) can be accounted for in livestock populations by appropriate best linear unbiased prediction approaches. This genetic effect has a recessive pattern and reveals when inherited in terms of identity-by-descent. Nevertheless, IDL inherits as a pure additive genetic background and can be selected using standard breeding values. The main target of this research was to evaluate IDL for litter size in 2 Iberian pig varieties (Entrepelado and Retinto) from a commercial breeding-stock. Analyses were performed on the total number of piglets born (both alive and dead) and used data from 3,200 (8.02 ± 0.04 piglets/litter) Entrepelado and 4,744 Retinto litters (8.40 ± 0.03 piglets/litter). Almost 50% of Entrepelado sows were inbred (1.7% to 25.0%), whereas this percentage reduced to 37.4% in the Retinto variety (0.2% to 25.0%). The analytical model was solved by Bayesian inference and accounted for 2 systematic effects (sow age and breed/variety of the artificial insemination boar), 2 permanent environmental effects (herd-year-season and sow), and 2 genetic effects (IDL and infinitesimal additive). In terms of posterior means (PM), additive genetic and IDL variances were similar in the Entrepelado variety (PM, 0.68 vs. 0.76 piglets2, respectively) and their 95% credibility intervals (95CI) overlapped, although without including zero (0.38 to 0.94 vs. 0.15 to 1.31 piglets2, respectively). The same pattern revealed in the Retinto variety, with IDL variance (PM, 0.41 piglets2; 95CI, 0.07 to 0.88 piglets2) slightly larger than the additive genetic variance (PM, 0.37 piglets2; 95CI, 0.16 to 0.59 piglets2). The relevance of IDL was also checked by a Bayes factor and the deviance information criterion, the model including this effect being clearly favored in both cases. Although the analysis assumed null genetic covariance between IDL and infinitesimal additive effects, a moderate negative correlation (¿0.31) was suggested when plotting the PM of breeding values in the Entrepelado variety; a negative genetic trend for IDL was also revealed in this Iberian pig variety (¿0.25 piglets for 100% inbred offspring of individuals born in 2014), whereas no trend was detected in Retinto breeding-stock. Age at first calving (AFC) is characterized as a censored trait due to missing values provided by recording mistakes and nonoccur-rence or delay in calving communication. In this context, we aimed to compare several statistical methods for genetic evaluation of AFC in Guzerá beef cattle under a Bayesian approach. Seven different methods were used for this purpose. The traditional linear mixed model (LM), which considers only uncensored records; the LM with simulated records (SM), which is based on data augmentation framework; the penalty method, in which a constant of 21 d was added to censored records; the bivariate threshold-linear method considering (TLcens) or not (TLmiss) censored information; and the piecewise Weibull proportional hazards model considering (PWPHcens) or not (PWPH) censored records. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.19 (TLcens) to 0.28 (SM) in non-survival approaches; and 0.40 and 0.46 to PWPH and PWPHcens methods, respectively. In general, breeding values correlations between different methods and the percentage of selected bulls in common indicated reranking, with these correlation ranging from -0.28 (between SM and PWPH) to 0.99 (between TLmiss and LM). The traditional LM, which considers only uncensored records, should be preferred due to its robustness and simplicity. Based on cross-validation analyses, we conclude that the TLmiss could be also a suitable alternative for breeding value prediction, and censored methods did not improve the analysis.

From an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis from four randomized controlled trials comparing haemodialysis (HD) with post-dilution online-haemodiafiltration (ol-HDF), previously it appeared that HDF decreases all-cause mortality by 14% (95% confidence interval 25; 1) and fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 23% (39; 3). Significant differences were not found for fatal infections and sudden death. So far, it is unclear, however, whether the reduced mortality risk of HDF is only due to a decrease in CVD events and if so, which CVD in particular is prevented, if compared with HD. Methods. The IPD base was used for the present study. Hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for cause-specific mortality overall and in thirds of the convection volume were calculated using the Cox proportional hazard regression models. Annualized mortality and numbers needed to treat (NNT) were calculated as well. Results. Besides 554 patients dying from CVD, fatal infections and sudden death, 215 participants died from 'other causes', such as withdrawal from treatment and malignancies. In this group, the mortality risk was comparable between HD and ol-HDF patients, both overall and in thirds of the convection volume. Subdivision of CVD mortality in fatal cardiac, non-cardiac and unclassified CVD showed that ol-HDF was only associated with a lower risk of cardiac casualties [0.64 (0.61; 0.90)]. Annual mortality rates also suggest that the reduction in CVD death is mainly due to a decrease in cardiac fatalities, including both ischaemic heart disease and congestion. Overall, 32 and 75 patients, respectively, need to be treated by high-volume HDF (HV-HDF) to prevent one all-cause and one CVD death, respectively, per year. Conclusion. The beneficial effect of ol-HDF on all-cause and CVD mortality appears to be mainly due to a reduction in fatal cardiac events, including ischaemic heart disease as well as congestion. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) and persistence of phase are fundamental approaches for exploring the genetic basis of economically important traits in cattle, including the identification of QTL for genomic selection and the estimation of effective population size (Ne) to determine the size of the training populations. In this study, we have used the Illumina BovineHD chip in 168 trios of 7 Spanish beef cattle breeds to obtain an overview of the magnitude of LD and the persistence of LD phase through the physical distance between markers. Also, we estimated the time of divergence based on the persistence of the LD phase and calculated past Ne from LD estimates using different alternatives to define the recombination rate. Estimates of average r2 (as a measure of LD) for adjacent markers were close to 0.52 in the 7 breeds and decreased with the distance between markers, although in long distances, some LD still remained (0.07 and 0.05 for markers 200 kb and 1 Mb apart, respectively). A panel with a lower boundary of 38,000 SNP would be necessary to launch a successful within-breed genomic selection program. Persistence of phase, measured as the pairwise correlations between estimates of r in 2 breeds at short distances (10 kb), was in the 0.89 to 0.94 range and decreased from 0.33 to 0.52 to a range of 0.01 to 0.08 when marker distance increased from 200 kb to 1 Mb, respectively. The magnitude of the persistence of phase between the Spanish beef breeds was similar to those found in dairy breeds. For across-breed genomic selection, the size of the SNP panels must be in the range of 50,000 to 83,000 SNP. Estimates of past Ne showed values ranging from 26 to 31 for 1 generation ago in all breeds. The divergence among breeds occurred between 129 and 207 generations ago. The results of this study are relevant for the future implementation of within- and across-breed genomic selection programs in the Spanish beef cattle populations. Our results suggest that a reduced subset of the SNP panel would be enough to achieve an adequate precision of the genomic predictions. © 2016 American Society of Animal Science. [EN] Although heteroskedasticity has been a main topic of interest in beef cattle during recent decades, the current availability of canalization models provided new insights for animal breeding programs. Within this context, birth BW (BWT) was analyzed in the Bruna dels Pirineus beef cattle breed by implementing canalization models that accounted for heterogeneous residual variances due to 30systematic, permanent environmental effects and additive genetic effects. Analyses were performed on BWT data from 8,130 calves born in 12 commercial breeding herds contributing to the yield recording scheme of the Bruna dels Pirineus breed. Analytical models accounted for direct additive genetic, permanent environmental, and 4 systematic effects (i.e., age of the dam, sex of the calf, birth type, and herd-year-season), and the same effects were evaluated as potential sources of variation in the residual term. Their relevance was checked by the deviance information criterion (DIC), and only residual additive genetic, permanent environmental, birth type, and herd-year-season remained in the operational model, all of them originating relevant reductions in the DIC parameter. Bruna dels Pirineus calves showed a moderate heritability of 0.30 (95% high posterior density, 0.19 to 0.40) for BWT; additional additive genetic variability was revealed in the residual term, this being positively correlated with the direct additive genetic component (0.44; 95% high posterior density, 0.37 to 0.54). Genetic trends were evaluated on both sources of additive genetic variance, and relevant patterns were identified in several herds. Although this breed did not evidence a homogeneous genetic trend for the whole population, herd- specific positive and negative trends were revealed, suggesting the plausibility of genetic selection for canalization on BWT in beef cattle breeds. Objective: to evaluate safety of continuous propofol sedation in elderly patients who undergo endoscopic procedures and investigate risk factors to develop complications in the geriatric population. Material and methods: patients who received endoscopist-directed propofol sedation were classified into two groups according to age. Group I: > 80 years; Group II: < 80 years. Propofol was administered by continuous intravenous infusion to achieve deep sedation. Arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiographic records were monitored during the procedure. Therapy and complications secondary to sedation were recorded. Results: one thousand two-hundred and ninety-five endoscopic procedures (gastroscopies, colonoscopies and endoscopic ultrasonographies) were included. The dose of propofol was lower and therapy was more frequently performed in Group I. There were no differences between sedation-related complications in both groups (Group I: 15.4%, Group II: 14%; p:n.s.). Patients in Group I showed greater tendency to develop severe oxygen desaturation in the colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography procedures. In the univariate analysis, a higher dose of propofol was associated with the appearance of complications (157.4 ± 84.4 vs 121.3 ± 89.6 mg) in elderly patients but it was not associated with severe oxygen desaturation. Conclusions: continuous propofol sedation during endoscopic procedures in elderly patients ≥ 80 years is as safe as in younger patients. Objetivo: evaluar la seguridad de la sedación con perfusión continua de propofol en ancianos a los que se les realizan procedimientos endoscópicos e investigar los factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de complicaciones en la población anciana. Diseño experimental: estudio observacional prospectivo de cohortes. Pacientes: pacientes sedados mediante perfusión continua administrada por el propio endoscopista divididos en dos grupos: Grupo I: ≥ 80 años; Grupo II: < 80 años. El propofol fue administrado mediante perfusión continua para conseguir sedación profunda. Durante la exploración se monitorizó: saturación arterial de oxígeno, presión arterial y registro electrocardiográfico. Se registró además si se realizó terapéutica endoscópica y las complicaciones relacionadas con la sedación que se produjeron. Resultados: se incluyeron 1.295 procedimientos endoscópicos (gastroscopias, colonoscopias y ecoendoscopias). La dosis de propofol fue inferior y la endoscopia fue terapéutica con mayor frecuencia en el Grupo I. No hubo diferencias en la aparición de complicaciones relativas a la sedación entre ambos grupos. (Grupo I: 15,4%, Grupo II: 14%; p:n.s.). Los pacientes del Grupo I tuvieron una mayor tendencia a desarrollar desaturación grave durante la colonoscopia y ecoendoscopia. En el análisis univariante, en los pacientes ancianos, el incremento en la dosis de propofol se asoció con la aparición de complicaciones (157,4 ± 84,4 vs 121,3 ± 89,6 mg) pero no con la desaturación grave. Conclusiones: la sedación con perfusión continua de propofol en procedimientos endoscópicos en pacientes ≥ 80 años es tan segura como en pacientes más jóvenes.

A considerable number of fatness QTL have been identified in growing pigs, but there is a lack of knowledge about the genetic architecture of this trait in gilts and sows. We have performed a genome scan, in 255 Iberian × Meishan F2 sows, for backfat thickness (BF) at 150 (BF150) and 210 (BF210) days of age, 30 days after conception (BF30) and 7–10 days before farrowing (BFbf). El colgajo submental es un procedimiento eficaz para la reconstrucción en el territorio maxilofacial. Caracterizado por su delgadez, versatilidad, excelente color y textura y mínima morbilidad en la zona donante, su utilización en lesiones malignas es controvertida, por el riesgo de trasladar enfermedad metastásica cervical a la zona receptora. Material y métodos: Se presentan 3 casos clínicos en los que se ha aplicado en pacientes afectos de un carcinoma epidermoide de cabeza y cuello. Describimos las particularidades anatómicas, y se realiza una revisión de la técnica quirúrgica. Resultados: Fueron óptimos en cuanto a cobertura del defecto, estética y función salvo por una necrosis parcial en uno de ellos. En todos los casos la morbilidad en la zona donante fue mínima. Conclusiones: El colgajo submental es una opción a considerar incluso en pacientes oncológicos sobre todo en los que, por edad avanzada o presentar patología asociada no están indicados procedimientos más agresivos. The submental flap is an effective option for the reconstruction in the maxillofacial territory. Characterized by its thinness, versatility, excellent colour and texture and minimum morbidity in the donor zone, its use in malignant injuries is controverted by the risk of transferring cervical metastasic disease to the receiving zone. Material and methods: we present 3 clinical cases in which it has been used in patients affected by an squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck. In addition, the anatomical particularities are described, and a revision of the surgical technique is made. Results: They were optimal in relation to covering of the defect, aesthetics and function except for a partial necrosis in one of them. In all the cases the morbidity in the donor zone was minimum. Conclusions: The submental flap is an option to consider in oncologic patients, mainly in those whom by advanced age or by the existence of comorbidity advice against the use of more aggressive procedures.

[EN] A Bayesian threshold model was fitted to analyze the genetic parameters for farrowing mortality at the piglet level in Large White, Landrace, and Pietrain populations. Field data were collected between 1999 and 2006. They were provided by 3 pig selection nucleus farms of a commercial breeding company registered in the Spanish Pig Data Bank (BDporc). Analyses were performed on 3 data sets of Large White (60,535 piglets born from 4,551 litters), Landrace (57,987 piglets from 5,008 litters), and Pietrain (42,707 piglets from 4,328 litters) populations. In the analysis, farrowing mortality was considered as a binary trait at the piglet level and scored as 1 (alive piglet) or 0 (dead piglet) at farrowing or within the first 12 h of life. Each breed was analyzed separately, and operational models included systematic effects (year-season, sex, litter size, and order of parity), direct and maternal additive genetic effects, and common litter effects. Analyses were performed by Bayesian methods using Gibbs sampling. The posterior means of direct heritability were 0.02, 0.06, and 0.10, and the posterior means of maternal heritability were 0.05, 0.13, and 0.06 for Large White, Landrace, and Pietrain populations, respectively. The posterior means of genetic correlation between the direct and maternal genetic effects for Landrace and Pietrain populations were -0.56 and -0.53, and the highest posterior intervals at 95% did not include zero. In contrast, the posterior mean of the genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects was 0.15 in the Large White population, with the null correlation included in the highest posterior interval at 95%. These results suggest that the genetic model of evaluation for the Landrace and Pietrain populations should include direct and maternal genetic effects, whereas farrowing mortality could be considered as a sow trait in the Large White population., Financial support was provided by the IRTA, Spain (grant 050221102). Ponencia publicada en ITEA, vol.104 La consanguinidad es un fenómeno biológico de especial relevancia en las especies domésticas, pudiéndose caracterizar tanto en términos de coeficiente de consanguinidad como fraccionando la contribución de cada individuo fundador en coeficientes de consanguinidad parcial (CP). A partir de los registros de longevidad de 4.226 cerdas de raza Landrace, este trabajo se ha centrado en la modelización de los CP bajo modelos Weibull de riesgos proporcionales y su posterior comparación mediante el DIC (deviance information criterion). Se asumieron tres distribuciones a priori distintas para los efectos de CP, resultando la normal asimétrica (DIC = 55.064,6) claramente preferible a la normal simétrica (DIC = 55.069,2) y a la distribución uniforme (DIC = 55.077,9). Se descartó, también, el modelo estándar con la consanguinidad global de cada individuo (DIC = 55.078,4). En el caso del modelo con DIC mínimo, la distribución posterior de los efectos de CP fue claramente asimétrica, con el 85,15% de las estimas afectando negativamente a la longevidad de las cerdas y el 14,85% restante con efecto neutro o incluso positivo. Señalar por último, que la heredabilidad para el carácter longevidad fue de 0,159. Inbreeding is a biological phenomenon of special relevance in domestic species, where the overall inbreeding coefficient can be partitioned in founder-specific partial inbreeding (PI) coefficients. Taking longevity data of 4,226 Landrace sows as starting point, this research proposed alternative parameterization for PI effects under Weibull proportional hazard models, and compared their performance through the deviance information criterion (DIC). Three different a priori distributions were assumed for PI effects, asymmetric normal (DIC = 55,064.6), symmetric normal (DIC = 55,069.2) and flat (DIC = 55,077.9). Additionally, the standard model accounting for the overall inbreeding coefficient was clearly discarded (DIC = 55,078.4). For the model with asymmetric Gaussian prior, the posterior distribution of PI effects was clearly skewed. An 85.15% of the estimates showed negative effect on sow longevity whereas the remaining 14.85% ones had null or even positive effect on sow survival. Estimated heritability was 0.159.

Dentro de este contexto, se evaluó el efecto de los aplomos sobre la longevidad de 587 cerdas Duroc, analizándose tanto la supervivencia global de las cerdas (SG) como la supervivencia bajo tres causas de fallida distintas (competing risk): muerte (BM), baja productividad (BP) y baja fertilidad (BF). La conformación global de los aplomos influyó (p < 0,001) la longevidad de las cerdas en los análisis SG, BP y BF, aumentado el riesgo de fallida a medida que empeoraban los aplomos. El crecimiento anormal de las pezuñas (p < 0,001) y la presencia de golpes o bultos en las patas (p < 0,05) incrementaba el riesgo de fallida en los análisis SG, BP y BF. Las cerdas plantígradas tenían un riesgo mayor de fallida en los análisis SG (p < 0,001) y BP (p < 0,05), las cerdas con hiperextensión de las patas tenían un riesgo mayor en el análisis BF (p < 0,05), mientras que la presencia de pies abiertos aumentaba el riesgo de fallida en el análisis SG (p < 0,05). Las estimaciones de heredabilidad para la longevidad de las cerdas fueron de 0,07 (análisis SG), 0,02 (análisis BP) y 0,08 (análisis BF). Morphologic traits such as leg conformation can play a key role on sow longevity. Within this context, the effect of leg conformation was evaluated on longevity data from 587 Duroc sows, longevity being characterized as overall longevity (OS) or sow failure due to death (DE), low productivity (LP) or low fertility (LF; competing risk analyses). Overall leg conformation score influenced (P < 0.001) sow longevity in OS, LP and LF analyses, impairing sow longevity when leg conformation got worse. Abnormal hoof growth (P < 0.001) and presence of bumps or injuries in legs (P < 0.001) increased the risk of failure in OS, LP and LF analyses. Plantigrade sows showed a higher culling risk in OS (P < 0.001) and LP (P < 0.05) analysis, sows with sickle-hooked leg had a higher culling risk in the LF analysis (P < 0.05), whereas splayed feet increased sow failure in the OS analysis (P < 0.05). Estimates of heritability for sow longevity were 0.07 (GS analysis), 0.02 (LP analysis) and 0.08 (LF analysis).

Two polymorphisms of the porcine prolactin receptor (PRLR) gene were previously related to litter size by several authors; however, the magnitude and direction of such effects varied depending on the population analyzed. We have sequenced the complete coding region of the porcine PRLR gene and found 6 nonconservative SNP C1217T (Leu/Pro406), C1283A (Asp/Ala 428), G1439A (Lys/Arg480), T1528A (Met/Leu510), G1600A (Gly/Ser534), and G1789A (Gly/Ser597), within exon 10 of the gene, which encodes the entire intracytoplasmic domain of the protein. Eight haplotypes were found and were segregating at different frequencies in 6 porcine breeds. The effects of each individual SNP and haplotype were evaluated in an Iberian x Meishan F2 population using a univariate mixed-inheritance animal model. Significant effects on the number of corpora lutea were found for PRLR haplotypes (P < 0.012), confirming the previously reported associations of PRLR in this process and highlighting the importance of performing analysis of haplotypes rather than of individual SNP. Suggestive effects or tendencies were found for heart rate at birth (P < 0.10), rectal temperature (P < 0.05), and oxygen saturation (P < 0.10) 1 h after birth, and time to first suckle (P < 0.10). We found greater than expected levels of amino acid variability within the intracellular domain of the porcine PRLR, which have been associated with differences in the number of corpus lutea of sows and the preweaning survivability of piglets. ©2006 American Society of Animal Science. The Bayes factor (BF) procedure was applied to examine the additive genetic component of several physiological and vitality variables for newborn pigs. Nine variables were studied heart rate, arterial oxygen saturation, rectal temperature (all at birth and 60 min later), birth weight, interval between birth and first teats contact, and interval between birth and first colostrum intake. The available numbers of data ranged from 288 (heart rate at 60 min) to 839 records (birth weight) from F2 Iberian x Meishan newborn pigs. We compared a model with zero heritability (nonheritable) with the one where the additive genetic background was included. The BF was used to discriminate between both candidate models. Very strong evidence of genetic background was detected for heart rate 60 min after birth (BF = 48.90), and strong evidence was detected for rectal temperature at birth (BF = 13.82). Posterior modes (means) of heritabilities were 0.29 (0.32) and 0.40 (0.39), respectively. We determined the species distribution and in-vitro susceptibility of 6082 bloodstream infection (BSI) isolates of Candida spp. collected from 250 medical centres in 32 nations over a 10-year period from 1992 through 2001. The species included 3401 C. albicans, 984 C. glabrata, 796 C. parapsilosis, 585 C. tropicalis, 153 C. krusei, 67 C. lusitaniae, 48 C. guilliermondii, 10 C. famata, 10 C. kefyr, six C. pelliculosa, five C. rugosa, four C. lipolytica, three C. dubliniensis, three C. inconspicua, two C. sake and one isolate each of C. lambica, C. norvegensis and C. zeylanoides. Minimum inhibitory concentration determinations were made using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards reference broth microdilution method. Variation in the rank order and frequency of the different species of Candida was observed over time and by geographic area. The proportion of BSI due to C. albicans and C. glabrata increased and C. parapsilosis decreased over time in Canada, the USA and Europe. C. glabrata was an infrequent cause of BSI in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. Very little variation in fluconazole susceptibility was observed among isolates of C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis. These species accounted for 78% of all BSI and remained highly susceptible (91–100% susceptible) to fluconazole from 1992 to 2001 irrespective of geographic origin. The prevalence of fluconazole resistance among C. glabrata isolates was variable both over time and among the various countries and regions. Resistance to fluconazole among C. glabrata isolates was greatest in the USA and varied by US census region (range 0–23%). These observations are generally encouraging relative to the sustained usefulness of fluconazole as a systemically active antifungal agent for the treatment of candida BSI.

Objectives: Post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) acute pancreatitis (PEP) is a frequent complication of this endoscopic procedure. Chronic statin intake has been linked to lower incidence and severity of acute pancreatitis (AP). Periprocedural rectal administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is protective against PEP, but the role of chronic acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) treatment is unclear. We aimed to investigate whether statins and chronic ASA intake are associated with lower risk of PEP. Methods: An international, multicenter, prospective cohort study. Consecutive patients undergoing ERCP in seven European centers were included. Patients were followed-up to detect those with PEP. Multivariate analysis by means of binary logistic regression was performed, and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were calculated. Results: A total of 1150 patients were included, and 70 (6.1%) patients developed PEP. Among statins users, 8.1% developed PEP vs. 5.4% among non-users (P=0.09). Multivariate analysis showed no association between statin use and PEP incidence (aOR 1.68 (95% CI 0.94–2.99, P=0.08)). Statin use had no effect on severity of PEP, being mild in 92.0% of statin users vs. 82.2% in non-statin users (P=0.31). Chronic ASA use was not associated with PEP either (aOR 1.02 (95% CI 0.49–2.13), P=0.96). Abuse of alcohol and previous endoscopic biliary sphincterotomy were protective factors against PEP, while >1 pancreatic guidewire passage, normal bilirubin values, and duration of the procedure >20minutes, were risk factors. Conclusions: The use of statins or ASA is not associated with a lower risk or a milder course of PEP.
