Se analizó la ingesta dietética, parámetros antropométricos y bioquímicos para valorar el estado nutricional de 390 militares españoles (tripulantes, mecánicos, pilotos de avión, pilotos de helicóptero y paracaidistas). Se observaron dietas altas en lípidos, proteínas, azúcares, colesterol y sal, y bajas en hidratos de carbono, fibra, y vitaminas y minerales. Más de la mitad de la muestra presentaba exceso de peso. Se observó una asociación entre la ingesta de agua y la composición corporal. En una submuestra (188 sujetos) se estudió el estado de hidratación (color de la orina, balance hídrico e ingesta de agua/peso corporal) y su relación con el estado de ansiedad (test STAI). Un 19% de la submuestra no cumplió el criterio de hidratación. Existía una asociación entre el estado de hidratación y el estado de ansiedad. En una submuestra (146 sujetos) estudiamos la calidad de la dieta (índice de alimentación saludable - IASE) y el riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular. Se observó la necesidad de mejorar el estado nutricional, si bien el riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular en este grupo de población fue bajo.

Growing evidence confirms choline as a critical perinatal nutrient. However, intake levels of choline and betaine among the Spanish fertile population remain unknown. Given their role in one-carbon metabolism with potential epigenetic effects, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the dietary intakes, their adequacy to existing guidelines and the main food sources together with other micronutrients involved in the methylation-methionine cycle (vitamin B6, folates and vitamin B12) in women of childbearing age. The ANIBES study, a cross-sectional study of a representative sample of women of childbearing age (18–45 years, n = 641) resident in Spain, was used. The sample was divided into younger women (18–30 years, n = 251) and older women (31–45 years, n = 390). Dietary intake was assessed by a three-day dietary record by using a tablet device. Total median intakes for the total sample were 303.9 mg/d for choline, 122.6 mg/d for betaine, 1.3 mg/d for vitamin B6, 140.8 μg/d for folates, and 3.8 μg/d for vitamin B12. The older subgroup showed significantly higher choline (p &lt, 0.05), betaine (p &lt, 0.001) and folates (p &lt, 0.05) intakes than younger women. Main food sources for the whole sample were meat and meat products for choline (28.3%), vitamin B6 (25.7%) and vitamin B12 (22.8%), cereals and derivatives (79.9%) for betaine, vegetables (20.0%) for folates. Overall intake adequacy was only observed for vitamin B12, with a very limited number of participants showing adequate intakes for all the other micronutrients. These results illustrate there is a relevant need to raise awareness about optimizing the status of the methionine cycle-related vitamins and cofactors in this potentially vulnerable population.

Objective: a quantification of dietary intakes of the micronutrients involved in the methylation-methionine cycle (choline, betaine, folate, vitamins B6 and B12) in a representative sample of pregnant women in Spain; assessment of intake adequacy to available official recommendations; and analysis of their main food sources. Material and methods: the median intake of each micronutrient was established using food consumption data reported in the National Dietary Survey of adults, the elderly, and pregnant women (ENALIA-2) (n = 133). For folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 intake, nutritional composition data from the Spanish Food Composition Tables were used, whereas for choline and betaine, which are not included in European food composition databases, the National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was considered. Intake adequacy was estimated in accordance with the recommendations of the main Spanish, European, and US guidelines. Results: mean daily intakes observed were 271.1 mg/day of choline; 142.5 mg/day of betaine; 182.8 μg/day of folate; 1.4 mg/day of vitamin B6; and 4.5 μg/day of vitamin B12. Intake adequacy levels were insufficient for choline (60.2 %) and folate (30.5 %); close to adequacy for vitamin B6 (71.6 %); and fully adequate only in the case of vitamin B12 (101.1 %). It is not possible to draw any conclusions regarding betaine intake in the absence of established recommendations. Main food sources included foods of animal origin for choline and vitamin B12 (71.8 % and 97.4 %, respectively); cereals and derivatives for betaine (85.3 %); vegetables (27.5 %) together with cereals and derivatives (18.6 %) for folate; and meats and derivatives (26.6 %) followed by vegetables (17.9 %) for vitamin B6. Conclusions: these findings are clearly indicative of the need to improve the intake and nutritional status of these components, which are of great nutritional interest for the health of pregnant women and, consequently, of their offspring. Consequent to the degree of adequacy observed, it seems necessary and urgent to employ not only dietary improvement strategies and the use of fortified foods, but also nutritional supplements with an individualized approach.Objetivo: cuantificar las ingestas dietéticas de los micronutrientes implicados en el ciclo metilación-metionina (colina, betaína, folatos, vitaminas B6 y B12) en una muestra representativa de mujeres gestantes residentes en España; determinar la adecuación a las recomendaciones, y analizar sus principales fuentes alimentarias. Para el cálculo del aporte de folatos y de vitaminas B6 y B12 se emplearon los datos de composición nutricional recogidos en las “Tablas de Composición de Alimentos en España”, mientras que para la colina y la betaína, nutrientes no incluidos en las bases de datos de composición de alimentos en Europa, se empleó la “Base de Datos Nacional de Nutrientes para Referencia Estándar del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos” (USDA). La adecuación de la ingesta se estimó de acuerdo con las recomendaciones de las principales guías españolas, europeas y estadounidenses. Resultados: las ingestas medias diarias observadas fueron de 271,1 mg/día de colina; 142,5 mg/día de betaína; 182,8 μg/día de folatos; 1,4 mg/día de vitamina B6; y 4,5 μg/día de vitamina B12. Los niveles de adecuación a las recomendaciones resultaron insuficientes para la colina (60,2 %) y los folatos (30,5 %); cercanos a la adecuación para la vitamina B6 (71,6 %); y plenamente adecuados únicamente en el caso de la vitamina B12 (101,1 %). No resulta posible extraer ninguna conclusión con respecto al aporte de betaína al no existir recomendaciones establecidas. Las principales fuentes alimentarias fueron: alimentos de origen animal para la colina y la vitamina B12 (71,8 % y 97,4 %, respectivamente); cereales y derivados para la betaína (85,3 %); verduras y hortalizas (27,5 %) junto a cereales y derivados (18,6 %) para los folatos; y carnes y derivados (26,6 %), seguidos de verduras y hortalizas (17,9 %) para la vitamina B6. Conclusiones: los resultados obtenidos son indicativos de la necesidad de mejorar la ingesta y el estado nutricional de estos componentes de gran interés para la salud de la mujer embarazada. Como consecuencia del grado de adecuación observado, parece necesario y urgente el empleo no solo de estrategias para mejorar la dieta y el uso de alimentos fortificados, sino también de suplementos nutricionales de manera personalizada.

Background An adequate hydration status is critical to ensure efficiency during mental and physical activities. Our goal was to assess the hydration status of a Spanish group of aeronautical military men and to determine the association of hydration status with body composition and anxiety. Methods A total of 188 men were evaluated through a validated hydration questionnaire, anthropometric and biochemical parameters, and an anxiety questionnaire. Based on these methods, the criteria of hydration were established. Results Of the total sample, 81% met the hydration criteria (urine color = well hydrated, water balance ≥ 0 ml, and total water intake/weight ≥ 35 ml/kg), and 19% did not meet the hydration criteria (urine color = not sufficiently hydrated or dehydrated, water balance P = 0.026), weight [(84.7 ± 10.5) vs. (80.5 ± 10.2) kg], body mass index [(26.3 ± 3.1) vs. (25.2 ± 2.8)]kg/m2, body fat [(22.3 ± 5.6) vs. (18.3 ± 6.5)] %, urine specific gravity, and urine color. Using a logistic binary regression model, hydration status was related significantly with the percentage of body fat (P = 0.004), but no relation was found with age, comorbidities, or medications. Furthermore, total water intake/weight was positively correlated with percentage of body water (r = 0.357, P = 0.000) and negatively with body fat (kg) (r = − 0.427, P = 0.000), percentage of body fat (r = − 0.405, P = 0.000), and waist/hip ratio (r = − 0.223, P = 0.002). Based on a linear regression model, total water intake/weight was related significantly with percentage of body fat (P = 0.001) and percentage of body water content (P = 0.035). No relation was found, however, with waist/hip ratio, age, comorbidities, or medications. Conclusions These findings all suggest a relationship between hydration status and body composition but also set the bases for future studies that relate hydration status and anxiety status. These results can be used to improve the hydration status and body composition of military personnel.

Moving towards sustainable food systems and food consumption are proposed as strategies to reduce environmental impact. However, these strategies require joint action between different stakeholders, including the general population&rsquo, s knowledge and perception, as final consumers. To assess the knowledge and awareness on food sustainability and environmental impact concepts in a representative sample of Spanish adult population, we conducted a cross-sectional, nationally representative telephone survey. After random selection, 2052 respondents aged &ge, 18 years (57% woman and 43% men) participated. A questionnaire was specifically designed for the research. Participants showed a good attitude towards sustainable diets, which were described as healthy by 40% of the population. Most of the responders (&gt, 70%), did not well understand ecological and carbon footprints, and green and blue water concepts. Men declared a higher understanding of sustainability concepts, as compared to women. More than 50% of the population misunderstood the impact of meat and derivatives production on sustainability, and 70% perceived the same for fish and dairy products. Women were more prone to pay more money to afford a sustainable diet than men were. In conclusion, although consumers show a positive attitude towards sustainability, important misconceptions remain, and thus require intervention through education, information, and motivation.

Overweight and obesity amongst childhood are currently global health issues. However, this is the best stage of life to prevent diseases and to promote healthy habits. In our study, we evaluate the effectiveness of the THAO Salud Infantil, a community-based intervention program, by means of a cross-sectional study carried out from 2009 to 2019 surveying children aged 3 to 12 years old (n = 27,686). During the study timeframe, overweight and obesity prevalence, according to both the International Obesity Task Force and Orbegozo Foundation criteria, showed a downward trend. Differences in the anthropometric variables were observed from the beginning to the end of the study, mainly in girls. Analysis of the influence of the socioeconomic status revealed that children from families with lower incomes are in greater risk of suffering from overweight and obesity and showed lower effectiveness of the actions proposed by the program. The overall results of the study confirmed the effectiveness of community-based interventions in terms of childhood overweight/obesity prevention.
