Black holes play an important role in linking microphysics with macrophysics, with those of the Planck mass ($M_P \sim10^{-5}$g) featuring in any theory of quantum gravity. In particular, the Compton-Schwarzschild correspondence posits a smooth transition between the Compton wavelength ($R_C \propto 1/M$) below the Planck mass and the Schwarzschild radius ($R_{\rm S} \propto M$) above it. The duality between $R_{\rm C}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ implies a form of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) and suggests that elementary particles may be sub-Planckian black holes. The simplest possibility is that the ADM mass has the form $M + \beta M_P^2/M$ for some constant $\beta$ and this model can be extended to charged and rotating black holes, clearly relevant to elementary particles. Another possibility is that sub-Planckian black holes may arise in loop quantum gravity and this explicitly links black holes and elementary particles. Higher dimensions may modify both proposals. If there are $n$ extra dimensions, all with the same compactification scale, one expects $R_{\rm S} \propto M^{1/(1+n)}$ below this scale but $R_{\rm C}$ depends on the form of the higher-dimensional wave-function. If it is spherically symmetric, then $R_{\rm C} \propto M^{-1}$, so duality is broken and the Planck mass is reduced, allowing the possibility of TeV quantum gravity. If the wave-function is pancaked in the extra dimensions, $R_{\rm C} \propto M^{-1/(1+n)}$ and so duality is preserved but the Planck mass is unchanged., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The LIGO discoveries have rekindled suggestions that primordial black holes (BHs) may constitute part to all of the dark matter (DM) in the Universe. Such suggestions came from 1) the observed merger rate of the BHs, 2) their unusual masses, 3) their low/zero spins, and 4) also from the independently uncovered cosmic infrared background (CIB) fluctuations signal of high amplitude and coherence with unresolved cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Here we summarize the prospects to resolve this important issue with electromagnetic observations using the instruments and tools expected in the 2020's. These prospects appear promising to make significant, and potentially critical, advances. We demonstrate that in the next decade, new space- and ground-borne electromagnetic instruments, combined with concurrent theoretical efforts, should shed critical light on the long-considered link between primordial BHs and DM. Specifically the new data and methodologies under this program will involve: I) Probing with high precision the spatial spectrum of source-subtracted CIB with Euclid and WFIRST, and its coherence with unresolved cosmic X-ray background using eROSITA and Athena, II) Advanced searches for microlensing of Galactic stars by the intervening Galactic Halo BHs with OGLE, Gaia, LSST and WFIRST, III) Supernovae (SNe) lensing in the upcoming surveys with WFIRST, LSST and also potentially with Euclid and JWST, IV) Advanced theoretical work to understand the details of PBH accretion and evolution and their influence on cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in light of the next generation CMB experiments, V) Better new samples and theoretical understanding involving stability and properties of ultra faint dwarf galaxies, pulsar timing, and cosmological quasar lensing., Comment: Science whitepaper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

An automated search is carried out for microlensing events using a catalogue of 44554 variable superpixel lightcurves derived from our three-year monitoring program of M31. Each step of our candidate selection is objective and reproducible by a computer. Our search is unrestricted, in the sense that it has no explicit timescale cut. So, it must overcome the awkward problem of distinguishing long-timescale microlensing events from long-period stellar variables. The basis of the selection algorithm is the fitting of the superpixel lightcurves to two different theoretical models, using variable star and blended microlensing templates. Only if microlensing is preferred is an event retained as a possible candidate. Further cuts are made with regard to (i) sampling, (ii) goodness of fit of the peak to a Paczynski curve, (iii) consistency of the microlensing hypothesis with the absence of a resolved source, (iv) achromaticity, (v) position in the colour-magnitude diagram and (vi) signal-to-noise ratio. Our results are reported in terms of first-level candidates, which are the most trustworthy, and second-level candidates, which are possible microlensing but have lower signal-to-noise and are more questionable. There appears to be a duality between elementary particles, which span the mass range below the Planck scale, and black holes, which span the mass range range above it. In particular, the Black Hole Uncertainty Principle Correspondence posits a smooth transition between the Compton and Schwarzschild scales as a function of mass. Licensed seasonal influenza vaccines induce antibody (Ab) responses against influenza hemagglutinin (HA) that are limited in their ability to protect against different strains of influenza. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes recognizing the conserved internal nucleoprotein (NP) and matrix protein (M1) are capable of mediating a cross-subtype immune response against influenza. Modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) virus encoding NP and M1 (MVA-NP+M1) is designed to boost preexisting T-cell responses in adults in order to elicit a cross-protective immune response. We examined the coadministration of HA protein formulations and candidate MVA-NP+M1 influenza vaccines in murine, avian, and swine models. Ab responses postimmunization were measured by ELISA and pseudotype neutralization assays. Here, we demonstrate that MVA-NP+M1 can act as an adjuvant enhancing Ab responses to HA while simultaneously inducing potent T-cell responses to conserved internal Ags. We show that this regimen leads to the induction of cytophilic Ab isotypes that are capable of inhibiting hemagglutination and in the context of H5 exhibit cross-clade neutralization. The simultaneous induction of T cells and Ab responses has the potential to improve seasonal vaccine performance and could be employed in pandemic situations.

The Black Hole Uncertainty Principle correspondence proposes a connection between the Uncertainty Principle on microscopic scales and black holes on macroscopic scales. This is manifested in a unified expression for the Compton wavelength and Schwarzschild radius. It is a natural consequence of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle, which suggests corrections to the Uncertainty Principle as the energy increases towards the Planck value. It also entails corrections to the event horizon size as the black hole mass falls to the Planck value, leading to the concept of a Generalized Event Horizon. One implication of this is that there could be sub-Planckian black holes with a size of order their Compton wavelength. Loop quantum gravity suggests the existence of black holes with precisely this feature. Licensed seasonal influenza vaccines induce antibody responses against influenza hemagglutinin that are limited in their ability to protect against different strains of influenza. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) recognizing the conserved internal nucleoprotein (NP) and matrix protein (M1) are capable of mediating a cross-subtype immune response against influenza. Modified vaccinia virus Ankara encoding NP and M1 (MVA-NP+M1) is designed to boost pre-existing T-cell responses in adults in order to elicit a cross-protective immune response. We examined the co-administration of hemagglutinin (HA) protein formulations and candidate MVA-NP+M1 influenza vaccines in murine, avian, and swine models. Antibody responses post-immunization were measured by ELISA and pseudotype neutralization assays. Here we demonstrate that MVA-NP+M1 can act as an adjuvant enhancing antibody (Ab) responses to HA while simultaneously inducing potent T-cell responses to conserved internal antigens. We show that this regimen leads to the induction of cytophilic Ab isotypes that are capable of inhibiting hemagglutination and in the context of H5 exhibit cross-clade neutralization. The simultaneous induction of T cells and antibody responses has the potential to improve seasonal vaccine performance and could be employed in pandemic situations.

Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the efficacy of elagolix, an oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist, for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain. Methods: This was a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled parallel group study conducted at 37 US centers, consisting of an 8-week double-blind period followed by a 16-week open-label period. Patients were 137 women aged 18 to 49, with laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis and moderate to severe nonmenstrual pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea, who were administered elagolix 150 mg daily or placebo. The primary outcomes of the study were the daily assessment of dysmenorrhea, nonmenstrual pelvic pain and dyspareunia using a modified Biberoglu-Behrman scale. Following the emergence and global spread of a novel H1N1 influenza virus in 2009, two A(H1N1)pdm/09 influenza vaccines produced from the A/California/07/09 H1N1 strain were selected and used for the national immunisation programme in the United Kingdom: an adjuvanted split virion vaccine and a non-adjuvanted whole virion vaccine. In this study, we assessed the immune responses generated in inbred large white pigs (Babraham line) following vaccination with these vaccines and after challenge with A(H1N1)pdm/09 virus three months post-vaccination. Both vaccines elicited strong antibody responses, which included high levels of influenza-specific IgG1 and haemagglutination inhibition titres to H1 virus. Immunisation with the adjuvanted split vaccine induced significantly higher interferon gamma production, increased frequency of interferon gamma-producing cells and proliferation of CD4(-)CD8(+) (cytotoxic) and CD4(+)CD8(+) (helper) T cells, after in vitro re-stimulation. Despite significant differences in the magnitude and breadth of immune responses in the two vaccinated and mock treated groups, similar quantities of viral RNA were detected from the nasal cavity in all pigs after live virus challenge. The present study provides support for the use of the pig as a valid experimental model for influenza infections in humans, including the assessment of protective efficacy of therapeutic interventions.

Imprecise excision of the Caenorhabditis elegans transposon Tc1 from a specific site of insertion within the unc-54 myosin heavy chain gene generates either wild-type or partial phenotypic revertants. Wild-type revertants and one class of partial revertants contain insertions of four nucleotides in the unc-54 third exon (Tc1 "footprints"). Such revertants express large amounts of functional unc-54 myosin despite having what would appear to be frameshifting insertions in the unc-54 third exon. We demonstrate that these Tc1 footprints act as efficient 5' splice sites for removal of the unc-54 third intron. Splicing of these new 5' splice sites to the normal third intron splice acceptor removes the Tc1 footprint from the mature mRNA and restores the normal translational reading frame. Partial revertant unc-54(r661), which contains a single nucleotide substitution relative to the wild-type gene, is spliced similarly, except that the use of its new 5' splice site creates a frameshift in the mature mRNA rather than removing one. In all of these revertants, two alternative 5' splice sites are available to remove intron 3. We determined the relative efficiency with which each alternative 5' splice site is used by stabilizing frameshifted mRNAs with smg(-) genetic backgrounds. In all cases, the upstream member of the two alternative sites is used preferentially (> 75% utilization). This may reflect an inherent preference of the splicing machinery for the upstream member of two closely spaced 5' splice sites. Creation of new 5' splice sites may be a general characteristic of Tc1 insertion and excision events.

Several authors have claimed that the observable Hawking emission from a microscopic black hole is significantly modified by the formation of a photosphere or chromosphere around the black hole due to QED or QCD interactions between the emitted particles. Analyzing these models we identify a number of physical and geometrical effects which invalidate them. Searching for microlensing in M31 using automated superpixel surveys raises a number of difficulties which are not present in more conventional techniques. Here we focus on the problem that the list of microlensing candidates is sensitive to the selection criteria or "cuts" imposed and some subjectivity is involved in this. Weakening the cuts will generate a longer list of microlensing candidates but with a greater fraction of spurious ones; strengthening the cuts will produce a shorter list but may exclude some genuine events. We illustrate this by comparing three analyses of the same data-set obtained from a 3-year observing run on the INT in La Palma. The results of two of these analyses have been already reported: Belokurov et al. (2005) obtained between 3 and 22 candidates, depending on the strength of their cuts, while Calchi Novati et al. (2005) obtained 6 candidates. The third analysis is presented here for the first time and reports 10 microlensing candidates, 7 of which are new. Only two of the candidates are common to all three analyses. We report the results of our statistical study of the POINT-AGAPE CNe catalogue. The first Sloan $r'$ and $i'$ analysis of the MMRD relationship in M31 is performed using the resulting POINT-AGAPE CN catalogue. Good fits are produced to the MMRD in the two filters. However, we are unable to verify the $t_{15}$ relationship for either Sloan filter. The subsequent analysis of our automated CN detection pipeline has provided us with the most thorough knowledge of the completeness of a CN survey to-date. In addition, the large field of view of the survey has permitted us to probe the outburst rate well into the galactic disk, unlike previous CCD imaging surveys. Using this analysis we are able to probe the CN distribution of M31 and evaluate the global nova rate. Using models of the galactic surface brightness of M31, we show that the observed CN distribution consists of a separate bulge and disk population. We also show that the M31 bulge CN eruption rate per unit $r'$ flux is more than five times greater than that of the disk. We deduce a global M31 CN rate of $65^{+16}_{-15}$ year$^{-1}$, a value much higher than found by previous surveys. Using the global rate, we derive a M31 bulge rate of $38^{+15}_{-12}$ year$^{-1}$ and a disk rate of $27^{+19}_{-15}$ year$^{-1}$. Given our understanding of the completeness and an analysis of other sources of error, we conclude that the true global nova rate of M31 is at least 50% higher than was previously thought and this has consequent implications for the presumed CN rate in the Milky Way. We deduce a Galactic bulge rate of $14^{+6}_{-5}$ year$^{-1}$, a disk rate of $20^{+14}_{-11}$ year$^{-1}$ and a global Galactic rate of $34^{+15}_{-12}$ year$^{-1}$.

Recent developments in the study of primordial black holes (PBHs) will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on their formation and evaporation. PBHs could provide a unique probe of the early Universe, gravitational collapse, high energy physics and quantum gravity. Indeed their study may place interesting constraints on the physics relevant to these areas even if they never formed. In the "early Universe" context, particularly useful constraints can be placed on inflationary scenarios, especially if evaporating PBHs leave stable Planck-mass relicts. In the "gravitational collapse" context, the existence of PBHs could provide a unique test of the sort of critical phenomena discovered in recent numerical calculations. In the "high energy physics" context, information may come from gamma-ray bursts (if a subset of these are generated by PBH explosions) or from cosmic rays (if some of these derive from evaporating PBHs). The lightcurve of PA-99-N2, one of the recently announced microlensing candidates towards M31, shows small deviations from the standard Paczynski form. We explore a number of possible explanations, including correlations with the seeing, the parallax effect and a binary lens. We find that the observations are consistent with an unresolved RGB or AGB star in M31 being microlensed by a binary lens. We find that the best fit binary lens mass ratio is about one hundredth, which is one of most extreme values found for a binary lens so far. If both the source and lens lie in the M31 disk, then the standard M31 model predicts the probable mass range of the system to be 0.02-3.6 solar masses (95 % confidence limit). In this scenario, the mass of the secondary component is therefore likely to be below the hydrogen-burning limit. On the other hand, if a compact halo object in M31 is lensing a disk or spheroid source, then the total lens mass is likely to lie between 0.09-32 solar masses, which is consistent with the primary being a stellar remnant and the secondary a low mass star or brown dwarf. The optical depth (or alternatively the differential rate) along the line of sight toward the event indicates that a halo lens is more likely than a stellar lens provided that dark compact objects comprise no less than 15 per cent (or 5 per cent) of haloes., Latex, 23 pages, 9 figures, in press at The Astrophysical Journal

The POINT-AGAPE collaboration is currently searching for massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) towards the Andromeda galaxy (M31). The survey aims to exploit the high inclination of the M31 disk, which causes an asymmetry in the spatial distribution of M31 MACHOs. Here, we investigate the effects of halo velocity anisotropy and flattening on the asymmetry signal using simple halo models. For a spherically symmetric and isotropic halo, we find that the underlying pixel-lensing rate in far-disk M31 MACHOs is more than 5 times the rate of near-disk events. We find that the asymmetry is increased further by about 30% if the MACHOs occupy radial orbits rather than tangential orbits, but is substantially reduced if the MACHOs lie in a flattened halo. However, even for haloes with a minor-to-major axis ratio q = 0.3, the numbers of M31 MACHOs in the far-side outnumber those in the near-side by a factor of ~2. We show that, if positional information is exploited in addition to number counts, then the number of candidate events required to confirm asymmetry for a range of flattened and anisotropic halo models is achievable, even with significant contamination by variable stars and foreground microlensing events. For pixel-lensing surveys which probe a representative portion of the M31 disk, a sample of around 50 candidates is likely to be sufficient to detect asymmetry within spherical haloes, even if half the sample is contaminated, or to detect asymmetry in haloes as flat as q = 0.3 provided less than a third of the sample comprises contaminants. We also argue that, provided its mass-to-light ratio is less than 100, the recently observed stellar stream around M31 is not problematic for the detection of asymmetry. Cosmological nucleosynthesis calculations imply that many of the baryons in the Universe must be dark. We discuss the likelihood that some of these dark baryons may reside in galaxies as Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs), the remnants of a first generation of pregalactic or protogalactic stars. Various candidates have been proposed for such remnants and we review the many types of observations which can be used to detect or exclude them. Claims to have found positive evidence for some of the candidates have generally turned out to be spurious or questionable, so the status of the MACHO scenario remains controversial. We discuss spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's equations which have equation of state ($p=\alpha \mu$) and which are self-similar in the sense that all dimensionless variables depend only upon $z\equiv r/t$. For each value of $\alpha$, such solutions are described by two parameters and have now been completely classified. There is a 1-parameter family of solutions asymptotic to the flat Friedmann model at large values of z. These represent either black holes or density perturbations which grow as fast as the particle horizon; the underdense solutions may be relevant to the existence of large-scale cosmic voids. There is also a 1-parameter family of solutions asymptotic to a self-similar Kantowski-Sachs model at large z. These are probably only physically realistic for $-11/5$, there is a family of solutions which are asymptotically Minkowski. These asymptote either to infinite z, in which case they are described by one parameter, or to a finite value of z, in which case they are described by two parameters and this includes the ``critical'' solution for $\alpha >0.28$. We classify all spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's equations with equation of state p/mu=a which are self-similar in the sense that all dimensionless variables depend only upon z=r/t. For a given value of a, such solutions are described by two parameters and they can be classified in terms of their behaviour at large and small distances from the origin; this usually corresponds to large and small values of z but (due to a coordinate anomaly) it may also correspond to finite z. We base our analysis on the demonstration that all similarity solutions must be asymptotic to solutions which depend on either powers of z or powers of lnz. We show that there are only three similarity solutions which have an exact power-law dependence on z: the flat Friedmann solution, a static solution and a Kantowski-Sachs solution (although the latter is probably only physical for a1/5, there are also two families of solutions which are asymptotically (but not exactly) Minkowski: the first is asymptotically Minkowski as z tends to infinity and is described by one parameter; the second is asymptotically Minkowski at a finite value of z and is described by two parameters. A complete analysis of the dust solutions is given, since these can be written down explicitly and elucidate the link between the z>0 and z, 63 pages. To appear in Physical Review D

Plasma and platelet levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5 HT) may be altered in essential hypertension. To establish the determinants and correlates of 5 HT in plasma and platelets, we studied 53 untreated subjects with essential hypertension (26 men; 30 whites; mean supine blood pressure 172/101 mm Hg; mean age 49.3 +/- 1.5 years) and 61 normotensive subjects (37 men; 47 whites; mean supine blood pressure 128/78 mm Hg; mean age 42.8 +/- 1.6 years). Plasma and platelet 5 HT were assayed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. No significant difference was found in platelet-poor plasma or platelet 5 HT levels in hypertensive or normotensive subjects (plasma: 43.0 +/- 4.2 and 39.6 +/- 4.4 nmol/L; platelet: 1.65 +/- 1.22 and 1.70 +/- 1.39 nmol/10(9) cells in hypertensive and normotensive subjects, respectively). No significant correlation was found between plasma or platelet 5 HT and systolic or diastolic blood pressure (plasma: r = 0.01 and 0.01 in normotensive subjects and r = 0.01 and -0.14 in hypertensive subjects; platelet: r = 0.12 and 0.13 in normotensive subjects and r = 0.02 and -0.09 in hypertensive subjects). However, plasma 5 HT was associated with supine and standing pulse rates (supine: r = 0.27, p = 0.05 in normotensive subjects and r = 0.54, p0.001 in hypertensive subjects; standing: r = 0.19 and r = 0.46, p0.001, respectively). Significant relations were also found between platelet 5 HT levels and supine and standing heart rate in the subjects mentioned above (supine: r = 0.28, p = 0.05 in normotensive subjects and r = 0.64, p0.001 in hypertensive subjects; standing: r = 0.24 and r = 0.51, p0.001, respectively). These associations were stronger in the hypertensive group as a whole, and they held when adjustment was made for differences in age and total blood cholesterol. The present study showed that plasma and platelet 5 HT are not significantly altered in hypertensive subjects. However, plasma and platelet 5 HT levels showed a significant association with supine and standing pulse rate predominantly in hypertensive subjects. This is consistent with experimental evidence of a positive chronotropic effect of 5 HT on perfused hearts and it suggests a possible role of plasma serotonin in the regulation of heart rate.

The different kinds of self-similarity in general relativity are discussed, with special emphasis on similarity of the ``first'' kind, corresponding to spacetimes admitting a homothetic vector. We then survey the various classes of self-similar solutions to Einstein's field equations and the different mathematical approaches used in studying them. We focus mainly on spatially homogenous and spherically symmetric self-similar solutions, emphasizing their possible roles as asymptotic states for more general models. Perfect fluid spherically symmetric similarity solutions have recently been completely classified, and we discuss various astrophysical and cosmological applications of such solutions. Blue primordial power spectra with a spectral index $n>1$ can lead to a significant production of primordial black holes in the very early Universe. The evaporation of these objects leads to a number of observational consequences and a model independent upper limit of $n \approx 1.4$. In some cases this limit is strengthened to $n=1.3$. Such limits may be employed to define the boundary to the region of parameter space consistent with generalized inflationary predictions. In closing, it is important to note that the indications for liver transplantation are not static but rather are remarkably dynamic and capable of change over time. Thus yesterday's major indications can become relative contraindications, while yesterday's absolute contraindications have become today's nuisances. The goal for physicians who care for individuals with problems such as alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis, and hepatic cancer should be to develop new strategies of care that will ultimately eliminate these diseases as problems, rather than eliminating individuals with such health problems from currently available health options. In other words, physicians who accept the responsibility for a patient's life should be searching for the best form of therapy available for their patient rather than examining the reasons that exist for limiting one's choice in health care.

Earth reflected solar radiation and stability of satellite thermal control coatings, noting intensity distribution shifting toward UV region and coatings degradation rate

Flight tests were made in natural icing conditions with two 8-ft-chord heated airfoils of different sections. Measurements of meteorological variables conducive to ice formation were made simultaneously with the procurement of airfoil thermal data. The extent of knowledge on the meteorology of icing, the impingement of water drops on airfoil surfaces, and the processes of heat transfer and evaporation from a wetted airfoil surface have been increased to a point where the design of heated wings on a fundamental, wet-air basis now can be undertaken with reasonable certainty.
