1. IMAGMASEIS: a research project to image the magmatic plumbing system under Cumbre Vieja volcano using passive seismic methods

Abstract

We present a research project intended to investigate the structure of Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, Canary Islands, after the September-December 2021 Tajogaite eruption. Starting in the summer of 2023, we will deploy a dense network of 35 broadband seismometers provided by GFZ and University of Granada, that will add up to the ~20 permanent stations already in operation by the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Volcanological Institute of Canary Islands (INVOLCAN). In this way, we expect to obtain a dense coverage of the whole island with inter-station distances of about 5 km. This broadband network will be in operation for a period of about a year. Additionally, we will perform a series of large-N experiments using 200 geophones (provided by GFZ). First we will deploy these instruments along linear profiles across the island, in N-S and E-W directions. In a second stage, we will move the geophones to a bidimensional grid configuration centered at the eruption site. We estimate that inter-station distances will be of ~0.5 km in both cases, and the recording periods will span around 4-5 months per configuration. The data obtained from these deployments will be used to perform a dense receiver function analysis and ambient noise tomography to improve the knowledge of the shallow velocity structure of the volcanic rift around the eruption area down to a depth of a few km and to image the magma sources in the crust and uppermost mantle., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

2. Wavefield analysis of volcanic tremor during the 2021 eruption of La Palma, Canary Islands, using multiple seismic arrays

Abstract

The 2021 Tajogaite eruption in La Palma, Canary Islands, was accompanied by strong volcanic tremor. In September 2021, during the first two weeks of eruption, we deployed two small-aperture seismic arrays. We chose two locations around Montaña Caldero and Llano del Jable, located about 4 km SE and 2 km NE of the eruption site. The arrays were composed of 1 three-component and 9 vertical-component short-period seismometers, sampled at 100 sps by a 12-channel data acquisition system. In each array, the receivers were spread with an aperture of about 400 m. Although they operated intermittently due to failures in the power supply related to ash fall, they provided long time series of multichannel seismic data that allow for the characterization of the syn-eruptive tremor. The analysis of the recorded wavefields reveals a persistent tremor source linked to the activity of the eruptive vents. The main component of the wavefield in the 1-3 Hz frequency band propagates with apparent slowness around 1 s/km, impinging on the arrays from directions of ~300 and 260ºN, respectively. These directions are slightly deviated from the active vents azimuths, a fact that we attribute to propagation effects produced by the topography and heterogeneous velocity structure. Subtle variations in the apparent slowness and propagation azimuths are investigated using the relative slowness estimate method, that allows for a precise determination of the apparent slowness vectors., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

This work focused on the ontology of all-inclusive superordinate categories (encompassing all human beings) and their role in building more inclusive societies. Eight studies examined their content, structure, and impact on intergroup relations. Regarding content, a qualitative study showed that global citizenship-oriented labels (e.g., “citizens of the world”) and humanness-oriented labels (e.g., "all humans everywhere") activated different prototypical meanings (Chapter 2). Regarding structure, five studies relying on a prototype approach demonstrated that "citizens of the world" has a prototypical structure and there is differentiated cognitive processing for its central and peripheral attributes (Chapter 3). Two studies compared how “citizens of the world” and “humans” are cognitively represented (Chapter 4). A correlational study showed that national citizens perceived migrants as more prototypical of "citizens of the world" (outgroup projection); whether no projection occurred for "humans". An experimental study showed that the salience of “humans” (vs. “citizens of the world”) triggered higher entitativity and essentialist perceptions, and dual-identity representations. Regarding impact, these studies explored intergroup helping from host communities towards migrants (Chapter 4). Identification with "citizens of the world" and with “humans” was associated with different patterns of helping (dependency- and autonomy-oriented help); whether no differences on intergroup helping were found when categories’ salience was manipulated. Overall, results suggest that all-inclusive superordinate categories represent different socio-psychological realities (i.e., content, structure, and impact), and their differentiated spontaneous prototypical meaning, and particularly the malleability of their prototypes to contextual socio-status-political motivations, might have an important role in their effectiveness as common ingroup identities. Este trabalho analisa a ontologia de categorias supraordenadas all-inclusive (que incluem todos os seres humanos), e o seu papel na construção de sociedades mais inclusivas. Oito estudos examinaram o seu conteúdo, estrutura, e impacto nas relações intergrupais. Quanto ao conteúdo, um estudo qualitativo demonstrou que rótulos focados na cidadania global (e.g., "cidadãos do mundo") e na humanidade (e.g., "todos os seres humanos em qualquer lugar") ativaram diferentes significados prototípicos (Capítulo 2). Quanto à estrutura, cinco estudos de análise de protótipo demonstraram a estrutura prototípica da categoria "cidadãos do mundo" e o processamento cognitivo diferenciado dos seus atributos centrais e periféricos (Capítulo 3). Abstract

SummaryNarcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a rare and chronic neurological disease characterized by sudden sleep attacks, overwhelming daytime drowsiness, and cataplexy. To contribute to the understanding of NT1 genetic causes, here we describe a whole-genome analysis of a monozygotic twin pair discordant for NT1. Our study revealed that although both twins have the same pathogenic mutations in NT1 associated genes (such as HLA-DQB1*06:02:01, HLA-DRB1*11:01:02/*15:03:01) the unaffected twin has mutations in genes outside the HLA loci that could be suppressing the NT1 phenotype. These results support the notion that NT1 has an immunological basis but that protective mutations in non-HLA might interfere with the clinical manifestation of the disease.

Abstract

Deception Island (South Shetland Islands) is one of the most active volcanoes in Antarctica, with more than 15 explosive eruptive events registered over the past two centuries. Recent eruptions (1967, 1969 and 1970) and volcanic unrest episodes in 1992, 1999 and 2014–15 demonstrate that the occurrence of future volcanic activity is a valid and pressing concern for scientists, logistic personnel and tourists that are visiting or are working on or near the island. Over the last few decades, intense research activity has been carried out on Deception Island to decipher the origin and evolution of this very complex volcano. To that end, a solid integration of related scientific disciplines, such as tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomorphology, remote sensing, glaciology, is required. A proper understanding of the island's evolution in the past, and its present state, is essential for improving the efficiency in interpreting monitoring data recorded during volcanic unrest periods and, hence, for future eruption forecasting. The Reliable Change Index (RCI) determines whether the magnitude of change observed in an individual can be attributed to true change. This study aimed to examine the RCI as a novel approach to estimating osteoarthritis progression. METHODS: Data were from 167 men and 392 women with knee osteoarthritis (diagnosed using the American College of Rheumatology criteria) randomized to the placebo arm of the 3-year Strontium Ranelate Efficacy in Knee Osteoarthritis trial (SEKOIA) and assessed annually. Abstract

The pandemic by COVID-19 is causing a devastating effect on the health of global population. There are several efforts to prevent the spread of the virus. Among those efforts, cleaning and disinfecting public areas have become important tasks. In order to contribute in this direction, this paper proposes a coverage path planning algorithm for a spraying drone, a micro aerial vehicle that has mounted a sprayer/sprinkler system, to disinfect areas. In contrast with planners in the state-of-the-art, this proposal presents i) a new sprayer/sprinkler model that fits a more realistic coverage volume to the drop dispersion and ii) a planning algorithm that efficiently restricts the flight to the region of interest avoiding potential collisions in bounded scenes. The drone with the algorithm has been tested in several simulation scenes, showing that the algorithm is effective and covers more areas with respect to other approaches in the literature. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To determine cardiovascular (CV) mortality and incidence of the first CV event (CVE) in patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases (CIRD) after 5 years of follow-up. METHODS: This is an analysis of the CARdiovascular in rheMAatology (CARMA) study after 5 years of follow-up. It includes patients with RA (n = 775), AS (n = 738) and PsA (n = 721), and individuals without CIRD (n = 677) attending outpatient rheumatology clinics from 67 public hospitals in Spain. Descriptive analyses were performed for the CV mortality at 5 years. The Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) function at 5 years was calculated to determine the expected risk of CV mortality. Poisson models were used to estimate the incidence rates of the first CVE. Hazard ratios of the risk factors involved in the development of the first CVE were evaluated using the Weibull proportional hazard model. RESULTS: Overall, 2382 subjects completed the follow-up visit at 5 years. Fifteen patients died due to CVE. CV deaths observed in the CIRD cohort were lower than that predicted by SCORE risk charts. The highest incidence rate of CVE [7.39 cases per 1000 person-years (95% CI 4.63, 11.18)] was found in PsA patients. However, after adjusting for age, sex and CV risk factors, AS was the inflammatory disease more commonly associated with CVE at 5 years [hazard ratio 4.60 (P =0.02)], compared with those without CIRD. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular mortality in patients with CIRD at 5 years of follow-up is lower than estimated. Patients with AS have a higher risk of developing a first CVE after 5 years of follow-up.

Abstract

Deception Island (South Shetland Islands) is one of the most active volcanoes in Antarctica, with more than 15 explosive eruptive events registered over the past two centuries. Recent eruptions (1967, 1969 and 1970) and volcanic unrest episodes in 1992, 1999 and 2014–15 demonstrate that the occurrence of future volcanic activity is a valid and pressing concern for scientists, logistic personnel and tourists that are visiting or are working on or near the island. Over the last few decades, intense research activity has been carried out on Deception Island to decipher the origin and evolution of this very complex volcano. To that end, a solid integration of related scientific disciplines, such as tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomorphology, remote sensing, glaciology, is required. A proper understanding of the island's evolution in the past, and its present state, is essential for improving the efficiency in interpreting monitoring data recorded during volcanic unrest periods and, hence, for future eruption forecasting. In this chapter, we briefly present Deception Island's most relevant tectonic, geomorphological, volcanological and magmatic features, as well as the results obtained from decades of monitoring the island's seismic activity and ground deformation.

11. Systematic review of the impact of drugs on diffuse interstitial lung disease associated with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract

Objective: To review the available evidence on the impact of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatments in associated diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD). Methods: Systematic review of studies evaluating the impact of pharmacological treatment in patients with RA and ILD. A bibliographic search in MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane, a selection of articles and the methodological quality assessment (FLC 3.0 OSTEBA) and grading of the level of evidence (SING) of the selected articles were performed. Results: 1,720 references were identified in primary search and 7 in manual or indirect. Forty-three articles were included: 7 systematic reviews, 2 randomized clinical trials, 5 cohort studies, 8 case-control studies and 21 case series. Methotrexate (MTX) and leflunomide (LEF) do not increase incidence, complications or mortality due to ILD. Although the results are not uniform, anti-TNF have often had worse outcomes in incidence, progression and mortality due to ILD than MTX, LEF, abatacept (ABA) and rituximab (RTX). The evidence found is scarce for JAK kinase and antifibrotic inhibitors, and controversial for IL-6 inhibitors. Conclusions: There is no evidence that MTX or LEF worsens the prognosis of patients with AR-EPID. RTX and ABA seem to have better results than other biologicals, such as anti-TNF, often achieving stabilization and, in some cases, the improvement of ILD in patients with RA. 13. BRAVOSEIS Onshore Seismic Array

Abstract

The Bransfield Strait is a seismically active extensional rift located between the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. The Strait is partly located on continental crust including areas within the transition to seafloor spreading. The amphibious seismic network BRAVOSEIS is an international effort focused on the seismological research of submarine volcanoes and rift dynamics in the Bransfield Strait. This network is the onshore component of the entire network consisting of 15 broadband land stations deployed in the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula between January 2018 and February 2020. The offshore components (network code ZX) include 9 broadband ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) across the Central Bransfield Basin and a group of 6 hydrophone moorings spanning the rift area of 200 x 100 km2, with inter-station distance of ~30 km. Additionally, a smaller offshore array consisting of 15 short-period OBSs with an aperture of 20 km and a narrow inter-station distance of ~4 km was deployed around the Orca submarine volcanic edifice south of King George Island. The data will be used to study the geodynamics of the Bransfield Strait and the evolution of the incipient rifting zone in the domain where extension has been suggested. Seismological methods will include earthquake location, source mechanism, surface wave analysis with ambient noise and earthquake data, receiver function and shear wave splitting. The results may shed light on the crustal structure and tectonic regime in the region and image the location and extent of magma accumulations related to submarine volcanic structures. Finally, the results should provide clues to assess the internal processes that occur in the submarine volcanoes of the area undergoing rifting. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 5M and are embargoed until Mar 2024. Abstract

Over a quarter million of protein phosphorylation sites have been identified so far, although the effects of site-specific phosphorylation on protein function and stability, as well as their possible impact in the phenotypic manifestation in genetic diseases are vastly unknown. We investigated here the effects of phosphorylating S82 in human NADP(H):quinone oxidoreductase 1, a representative example of disease-associated flavoprotein in which protein stability is coupled to the intracellular flavin levels. Additionally, the cancer-associated P187S polymorphism causes inactivation and destabilization of the enzyme. By using extensive in vitro and in silico characterization of phosphomimetic S82D mutations, we showed that S82D locally affected the flavin binding site of the wild-type (WE) and P187S proteins thus altering Flavin binding affinity, conformational stability and aggregation propensity. Consequently, the phosphomimetic S82D may destabilize the WT protein intracellularly by promoting the formation of the degradation-prone apo-protein. Noteworthy, WT and P187S proteins respond differently to the phosphomimetic mutation in terms of intracellular stability, further supporting differences in molecular recognition of these two variants by the proteasomal degradation pathway. We propose that phosphorylation could have critical consequences on stability and function of human flavoproteins, important for our understanding of genotype-phenotype relationships in their related genetic diseases. Abstract

The present thesis sought to investigate the Portuguese perspectives on Leadership, Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The purpose was to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and theory and to contribute to the literature advancement in the fields of Leadership, Marketing and CSR by presenting a study that identifies the tendencies of the Portuguese managers perspectives on leadership effectiveness, leadership styles, softskills, emotion intelligence, online marketing and CSR concept and its impact on brand image, brand insurance and purchase intent. The objectives of this thesis were: to name the leadership effectiveness skills; to verify what leadership styles are possible to identify, when should each one be used and the effect each can have on employees; to establish the mostwanted soft-skills by recruiters and the specific competences coming from emotional intelligence; to establish the importance of online marketing within the company´s strategy to engage consumers; and to identify the Portuguese idea of CSR and the impact CSR can have on brand image, brand insurance and purchase intent. This investigation was based on a primary source, from the application of interviews to a sample of fifteen Portuguese managers, and secondary sources, consisting of bibliographic research and information processing, included the systematized study based on books, journals, scientific articles and electronic networks. As for the possibility of generalizing the results found in this thesis to other contexts or samples, although this study complements the authors' perspectives on the topics addressed, this was only an exploratory study that cannot be generalized or representative. A presente tese procurou identificar a perspetiva dos gestores Portugueses sobre Liderança, Marketing e Responsabilidade Social Corporativa (RSC). O objetivo foi contribuir para o avanço do conhecimento e para o avanço da literatura nas áreas de Liderança, Marketing e RSC, através da apresentação de um estudo que identificasse as tendências da perspetiva dos gestores portugueses sobre as competências necessárias a uma liderança eficaz, estilos de liderança, soft-skills, inteligência emocional, marketing online e conceito de RSC e o seu impacto na imagem e segurança das marcas e na intenção de compra dos consumidores. A presente investigação teve como objetivos: identificar as competências necessárias a uma liderança eficaz; perceber quais os estilos de liderança possíveis de identificar, quando cada um deve ser usado e o efeito que cada um pode ter nos colaboradores; identificar as softskills mais procuradas pelos recrutadores e as competências específicas que advêm da inteligência emocional; entender como o marketing online pode facilitar a angariação de novos clientes e a retenção daqueles que já o eram; e entender a ideia que os portugueses têm de RSC e o impacto que consideram ter na imagem e segurança das marcas e na intenção de compra dos consumidores. Esta investigação baseou-se numa fonte primária, através da aplicação de entrevistas a uma amostra de quinze gestores portugueses, e fontes secundárias, constituídas por pesquisa bibliográfica e processamento de informação baseado em livros, revistas e artigos científicos e websites. Este é apenas um estudo exploratório e os resultados não devem ser generalizados ou considerados representativos.

Abstract

We present the first joint analysis of gamma-ray data from the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes and the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to search for gamma-ray signals from dark matter annihilation in dwarf satellite galaxies. We combine 158 hours of Segue 1 observations with MAGIC with 6-year observations of 15 dwarf satellite galaxies by the Fermi-LAT. We obtain limits on the annihilation cross-section for dark matter particle masses between 10 GeV and 100 TeV - the widest mass range ever explored by a single gamma-ray analysis. These limits improve on previously published Fermi-LAT and MAGIC results by up to a factor of two at certain masses. Our new inclusive analysis approach is completely generic and can be used to perform a global, sensitivity-optimized dark matter search by combining data from present and future gamma-ray and neutrino detectors., 19 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located in the Canary island of La Palma, Spain. During summer 2011 and 2012 it underwent a series of upgrades, involving the exchange of the MAGIC-I camera and its trigger system, as well as the upgrade of the readout system of both telescopes. We use observations of the Crab Nebula taken at low and medium zenith angles to assess the key performance parameters of the MAGIC stereo system. For low zenith angle observations, the standard trigger threshold of the MAGIC telescopes is ~50GeV. The integral sensitivity for point-like sources with Crab Nebula-like spectrum above 220GeV is (0.66+/-0.03)% of Crab Nebula flux in 50 h of observations. The angular resolution, defined as the sigma of a 2-dimensional Gaussian distribution, at those energies is < 0.07 degree, while the energy resolution is 16%. We also re-evaluate the effect of the systematic uncertainty on the data taken with the MAGIC telescopes after the upgrade. We estimate that the systematic uncertainties can be divided in the following components: < 15% in energy scale, 11-18% in flux normalization and +/-0.15 for the energy spectrum power-law slope., 21 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The astrophysical journal 819(2), 156 (2016). doi:10.3847/0004-637X/819/2/156, We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity in the 3–79 keV range, revealing that the spectrum softens when the source is dimmer until the X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep ${\rm{\Gamma }}\approx 3$ power law, with no evidence for an exponential cutoff or additional hard components up to ~80 keV. For the first time, we observed both the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton peaks of the spectral energy distribution (SED) simultaneously shifted to frequencies below the typical quiescent state by an order of magnitude. The fractional variability as a function of photon energy shows a double-bump structure that relates to the two bumps of the broadband SED. In each bump, the variability increases with energy, which, in the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model, implies that the electrons with higher energies are more variable. The measured multi band variability, the significant X-ray-to-VHE correlation down to some of the lowest fluxes ever observed in both bands, the lack of correlation between optical/UV and X-ray flux, the low degree of polarization and its significant (random) variations, the short estimated electron cooling time, and the significantly longer variability timescale observed in the NuSTAR light curves point toward in situ electron acceleration and suggest that there are multiple compact regions contributing to the broadband emission of Mrk 421 during low-activity states., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the ripening process of Italian Parmigiano Reggiano cheese with non-destructive and portable techniques based on the use of a nanowire gas sensor device S3 and a spectrocolorimeter with L∗a∗b∗ parameters of CIELab colorimetric system. We illustrate a new electronic nose model S3 composed of an array of six metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) nanowire gas sensors which is rapid and easy to operate. The grated cheese samples were analyzed with the S3 device used for the evaluation of cheese headspace volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Similarly, a spectrocolorimeter was used for the color evaluation of the cheese samples. The experimental evidence suggests the true potential of the electronic nose S3 combined with spectrocolorimetry technique for the study and monitoring of the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese ripening and eventually the cheese quality control.

24. Enhanced vulnerability of human proteins towards disease-associated inactivation through divergent evolution

Abstract

Human proteins are vulnerable towards disease-associated single amino acid replacements affecting protein stability and function. Interestingly, a few studies have shown that consensus amino acids from mammals or vertebrates can enhance protein stability when incorporated into human proteins. Here, we investigate yet unexplored relationships between the high vulnerability of human proteins towards disease-associated inactivation and recent evolutionary site-specific divergence of stabilizing amino acids. Using phylogenetic, structural and experimental analyses, we show that divergence from the consensus amino acids at several sites during mammalian evolution has caused local protein destabilization in two human proteins linked to disease: cancer-associated NQO1 and alanine: glyoxylate aminotransferase, mutated in primary hyperoxaluria type I. We demonstrate that a single consensus mutation (H80R) acts as a disease suppressor on the most common cancer-associated polymorphism in NQO1 (P187S). The H80R mutation reactivates P187S by enhancing FAD binding affinity through local and dynamic stabilization of its binding site. Furthermore, we show how a second suppressor mutation (E247Q) cooperates with H80R in protecting the P187S polymorphism towards inactivation through long-range allosteric communication within the structural ensemble of the protein. Our results support that recent divergence of consensus amino acids may have occurred with neutral effects on many functional and regulatory traits of wild-type human proteins. However, divergence at certain sites may have increased the propensity of some human proteins towards inactivation due to disease-associated mutations and polymorphisms. Consensus mutations also emerge as a potential strategy to identify structural hot-spots in proteins as targets for pharmacological rescue in loss-of-function genetic diseases.

We show that p.P187S causes structural and dynamic changes communicated to functional sites far from the mutated site, affecting the FAD binding site located at the N-terminal domain (NTD) and accelerating proteasomal degradation through dynamic effects on the C-terminal domain (CTD). Structural protein:protein interaction studies reveal that the cancer-associated polymorphism does not abolish the interaction with p73a, indicating that oncosuppressor destabilization largely mirrors the low intracellular stability of p.P187S. In conclusion, we show how a single disease associated amino acid change may allosterically perturb several functional sites in an oligomeric and multidomain protein. These results have important implications for the understanding of loss-of-function genetic diseases and the identification of novel structural hot spots as targets for pharmacological intervention.

Abstract

We report on simultaneous broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar Markarian 501 between 1 April and 10 August 2013, including the first detailed characterization of the synchrotron peak with Swift and NuSTAR. During the campaign, the nearby BL Lac object was observed in both a quiescent and an elevated state. The broadband campaign includes observations with NuSTAR, MAGIC, VERITAS, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), Swift X-ray Telescope and UV Optical Telescope, various ground-based optical instruments, including the GASP-WEBT program, as well as radio observations by OVRO, Mets\"ahovi and the F-Gamma consortium. Some of the MAGIC observations were affected by a sand layer from the Saharan desert, and had to be corrected using event-by-event corrections derived with a LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) facility. This is the first time that LIDAR information is used to produce a physics result with Cherenkov Telescope data taken during adverse atmospheric conditions, and hence sets a precedent for the current and future ground-based gamma-ray instruments. The NuSTAR instrument provides unprecedented sensitivity in hard X-rays, showing the source to display a spectral energy distribution between 3 and 79 keV consistent with a log-parabolic spectrum and hard X-ray variability on hour timescales. None (of the four extended NuSTAR observations) shows evidence of the onset of inverse-Compton emission at hard X-ray energies. We apply a single-zone equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton model to five simultaneous broadband spectral energy distributions. We find that the synchrotron self-Compton model can reproduce the observed broadband states through a decrease in the magnetic field strength coinciding with an increase in the luminosity and hardness of the relativistic leptons responsible for the high-energy emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Context: MWC 656 has recently been established as the first observationally detected high-mass X-ray binary system containing a Be star and a black hole (BH). The system has been associated with a gamma-ray flaring event detected by the AGILE satellite in July 2010. Aims: Our aim is to evaluate if the MWC 656 gamma-ray emission extends to very high energy (VHE > 100 GeV) gamma rays. Methods. We have observed MWC 656 with the MAGIC telescopes for $\sim$23 hours during two observation periods: between May and June 2012 and June 2013. During the last period, observations were performed contemporaneously with X-ray (XMM-Newton) and optical (STELLA) instruments. Results: We have not detected the MWC 656 binary system at TeV energies with the MAGIC Telescopes in either of the two campaigns carried out. Upper limits (ULs) to the integral flux above 300 GeV have been set, as well as differential ULs at a level of $\sim$5% of the Crab Nebula flux. The results obtained from the MAGIC observations do not support persistent emission of very high energy gamma rays from this system at a level of 2.4% the Crab flux., Accepted for publication in A&A. 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) 1ES 0806+524 (z = 0.138) was discovered in very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays in 2008. Until now, the broad-band spectrum of lES 0806+524 has been only poorly characterized, in particular at high energies. We analysed multiwave-length observations from gamma-rays to radio performed from 2011 January to March, which were triggered by the high activity detected at optical frequencies. These observations constitute the most precise determination of the broad-band emission of ES 0806+524 to date. The stereoscopic Major Atmospheric Gamma-Ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) observations yielded a gamma-ray signal above 250 GeV of (3.7 +/- 0.7) per cent of the Crab Nebula flux with a statistical significance of 9.9a. The multiwavelength observations showed significant variability in essentially all energy bands, including a VHE gamma-ray flare that lasted less than one night, which provided unprecedented evidence for short-term variability in lES 0806+524. The spectrum of this flare is well described by a power law with a photon index of 2.97 +/- 0.29 between similar to 150 GeV and 1 TeV and an integral flux of (9.3 +/- 1.9) per cent of the Crab nebula flux above 250 GeV. The spectrum during the non-flaring VHE activity is compatible with the only available VHE observation performed in 2008 with VERITAS when the source was in a low optical state. The broad-band spectral energy distribution can be described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model with parameters typical for HBLs, indicating that lES 0806+524 is not substantially different from the HBLs previously detected.

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 459, 2286 - 2298 (2016). doi:10.1093/mnras/stw710, The BL Lac object 1ES 1011+496 was discovered at very high energy (VHE, E > 100GeV) γ-rays by Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) in Spring 2007. Before that the source was little studied in different wavelengths. Therefore, a multiwavelength (MWL) campaign was organized in Spring 2008. Along MAGIC, the MWL campaign included the Metsähovi Radio Observatory, Bell and Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien (KVA) optical telescopes and the Swift and AGILE satellites. MAGIC observations span from 2008 March to May for a total of 27.9 h, of which 19.4 h remained after quality cuts. The light curve showed no significant variability yielding an integral flux above 200 GeV of (1.3 ± 0.3) × 10$^{−11}$ photons cm$^{−2}$ s$^{−1}$. The differential VHE spectrum could be described with a power-law function with a spectral index of 3.3 ± 0.4. Both results were similar to those obtained during the discovery. Swift X-ray Telescope observations revealed an X-ray flare, characterized by a harder-when-brighter trend, as is typical for high synchrotron peak BL Lac objects (HBL). Strong optical variability was found during the campaign, but no conclusion on the connection between the optical and VHE γ-ray bands could be drawn. The contemporaneous spectral energy distribution shows a synchrotron-dominated source, unlike concluded in previous work based on non-simultaneous data, and is well described by a standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. We also performed a study on the source classification. While the optical and X-ray data taken during our campaign show typical characteristics of an HBL, we suggest, based on archival data, that 1ES 1011+496 is actually a borderline case between intermediate and high synchrotron peak frequency BL Lac objects., Published by Oxford Univ. Abstract

Astronomy and astrophysics 591, A10(2016). doi:10.1051/0004-6361/201527176, 1ES 1011+496 (z = 0.212) was discovered in very high-energy (VHE, E> 100 GeV) γ rays with MAGIC in 2007. The absence of simultaneous data at lower energies led to an incomplete characterization of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED).Aims. We study the source properties and the emission mechanisms, probing whether a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario is able to explain the observed broadband spectrum.Methods. We analyzed data in the range from VHE to radio data from 2011 and 2012 collected by MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, Swift, KVA, OVRO, and Metsähovi in addition to optical polarimetry data and radio maps from the Liverpool Telescope and MOJAVE.Results. The VHE spectrum was fit with a simple power law with a photon index of 3.69 ± 0.22 and a flux above 150 GeV of (1.46 ± 0.16) × 10$^{-11}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The source 1ES 1011+496 was found to be in a generally quiescent state at all observed wavelengths, showing only moderate variability from radio to X-rays. A low degree of polarization of less than 10% was measured in optical, while some bright features polarized up to 60% were observed in the radio jet. A similar trend in the rotation of the electric vector position angle was found in optical and radio. The radio maps indicated a superluminal motion of 1.8 ± 0.4 c, which is the highest speed statistically significant measured so far in a high-frequency-peaked BL Lac.Conclusions. For the first time, the high-energy bump in the broadband SED of 1ES 1011+496 could be fully characterized from 0.1 GeV to 1 TeV, which permitted a more reliable interpretation within the one-zone SSC scenario. The polarimetry data suggest that at least part of the optical emission has its origin in some of the bright radio features, while the low polarization in optical might be due to the contribution of parts of the radio jet with different orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the optical emission., Published by EDP Sciences, Les Ulis

Abstract

The MAGIC telescope took data of very high energy ?-ray emission from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) between 2004 November and 2005 April. We present a combined analysis of data samples recorded under different observational conditions, down to ?-ray energies of 100 GeV. The flux was found to vary between 0.5 and 2 crab (integrated above 200 GeV), considered a low state when compared to known data. Although the flux varied day by day, no short-term variability was observed, although there is some indication that not all nights show an equally quiescent state. The results at higher energies were found to be consistent with previous observations. A clear correlation is observed between ?-ray and X-ray fluxes, whereas no significant correlation between ?-ray and optical data is seen. The spectral energy distribution between 100 GeV and 3 TeV shows a clear deviation from a power law, more clearly and at lower flux than previous observations at higher energies. The deviation persists after correcting for the effect of attenuation by the extragalactic background light, and most likely is source-inherent. There is a rather clear indication of an inverse Compton peak around 100 GeV. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 can be fitted by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, suggesting once again a leptonic origin of the very high energy ?-ray emission from this blazar. ispartof: Astrophysical Journal vol:663 issue:1 pages:125-138 status: published

Abstract

The discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting X-ray binaries has triggered an intense effort to better understand the particle acceleration, absorption, and emission mechanisms in compact binary systems, which provide variable conditions along eccentric orbits. Despite this, the nature of some of these systems, and of the accelerated particles producing the VHE emission, is unclear. To answer some of these open questions, we conducted a multiwavelength campaign of the VHE gamma-ray emitting X-ray binary LS I +61 303 including the MAGIC telescope, XMM-Newton, and Swift during 60% of an orbit in 2007 September. We detect a simultaneous outburst at X-ray and VHE bands, with the peak at phase 0.62 and a similar shape at both wavelengths. A linear fit to the simultaneous X-ray/VHE pairs obtained during the outburst yields a correlation coefficient of r=0.97, while a linear fit to all simultaneous pairs provides r=0.81. Since a variable absorption of the VHE emission towards the observer is not expected for the data reported here, the correlation found indicates a simultaneity in the emission processes. Assuming that they are dominated by a single particle population, either hadronic or leptonic, the X-ray/VHE flux ratio favors leptonic models. This fact, together with the detected photon indices, suggests that in LS I +61 303 the X-rays are the result of synchrotron radiation of the same electrons that produce VHE emission as a result of inverse Compton scattering of stellar photons., To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The MAGIC stereoscopic system collected 69 hours of Crab Nebula data between October 2009 and April 2011. Analysis of this data sample using the latest improvements in the MAGIC stereoscopic software provided an unprecedented precision of spectral and night-by-night light curve determination at gamma rays. We derived a differential spectrum with a single instrument from 50 GeV up to almost 30 TeV with 5 bins per energy decade. At low energies, MAGIC results, combined with Fermi-LAT data, show a flat and broad Inverse Compton peak. The overall fit to the data between 1 GeV and 30 TeV is not well described by a log-parabola function. We find that a modified log-parabola function with an exponent of 2.5 instead of 2 provides a good description of the data ($\chi^2=35/26$). Using systematic uncertainties of red the MAGIC and Fermi-LAT measurements we determine the position of the Inverse Compton peak to be at (53 $\pm$ 3stat + 31syst -13syst) GeV, which is the most precise estimation up to date and is dominated by the systematic effects. There is no hint of the integral flux variability on daily scales at energies above 300 GeV when systematic uncertainties are included in the flux measurement. We consider three state- of-the-art theoretical models to describe the overall spectral energy distribution of the Crab Nebula. The constant B-field model cannot satisfactorily reproduce the VHE spectral measurements presented in this work, having particular difficulty reproducing the broadness of the observed IC peak. Most probably this implies that the assumption of the homogeneity of the magnetic field inside the nebula is incorrect. On the other hand, the time-dependent 1D spectral model provides a good fit of the new VHE results when considering a 80 {\mu}G magnetic field. Abstract

© ESO, 2014. Context. Blazars are variable sources on various timescales over a broad energy range spanning from radio to very high energy (>100 GeV, hereafter VHE). Mrk? 501 is one of the brightest blazars at TeV energies and has been extensively studied since its first VHE detection in 1996. However, most of the γ-ray studies performed on Mrk? 501 during the past years relate to flaring activity, when the source detection and characterization with the available γ-ray instrumentation was easier toperform. Aims. Our goal is to characterize the source γ-ray emission in detail, together with the radio-to-X-ray emission, during the non-flaring (low) activity, which is less often studied than the occasional flaring (high) activity. Methods. We organized a multiwavelength (MW) campaign on Mrk? 501 between March and May 2008. This multi-instrument effort included the most sensitive VHE γ-ray instruments in the northern hemisphere, namely the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes MAGIC and VERITAS, as well as Swift, RXTE, the F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, and other collaborations and instruments. This provided extensive energy and temporal coverage of Mrk? 501 throughout the entire campaign. Results. Mrk 501 was found to be in a low state of activity during the campaign, with a VHE flux in the range of 10%-20% of the Crab nebula flux. Nevertheless, significant flux variations were detected with various instruments, with a trend of increasing variability with energy and a tentative correlation between the X-ray and VHE fluxes. The broadband spectral energy distribution during the two different emission states of the campaign can be adequately described within the homogeneous one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, with the (slightly) higher state described by an increase in the electron number density. Conclusions. The one-zone SSC model can adequately describe the broadband spectral energy distribution of the source during the two months covered by the MW campaign. This agrees with previous studies of the broadband emission of this source during flaring and non-flaring states. We report for the first time a tentative X-ray-to-VHE correlation during such a low VHE activity. Although marginally significant, this positive correlation between X-ray and VHE, which has been reported many times during flaring activity, suggests that the mechanisms that dominate the X-ray/VHE emission during non-flaring-activity are not substantially different from those that are responsible for the emission during flaring activity.

Abstract

Context. In the last five years the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument detected GeV ��-ray emission from five novae. The GeV emission can be interpreted in terms of an inverse Compton process of electrons accelerated in a shock. In this case it is expected that protons in the same conditions can be accelerated to much higher energies. Consequently they may produce a second component in the ��-ray spectrum at TeV energies. Aims. We aim to explore the very-high-energy domain to search for ��-ray emission above 50 GeV and to shed light on the acceleration process of leptons and hadrons in nova explosions. Methods. We have performed observations with the MAGIC telescopes of the classical nova V339 Del shortly after the 2013 outburst, triggered by optical and subsequent GeV ��-ray detec- tions. We also briefly report on VHE observations of the symbiotic nova YY Her and the dwarf nova ASASSN-13ax. We complement the TeV MAGIC observations with the analysis of con- temporaneous Fermi-LAT data of the sources. The TeV and GeV observations are compared in order to evaluate the acceleration parameters for leptons and hadrons. Results. No significant TeV emission was found from the studied sources. We computed upper limits on the spectrum and night-by-night flux. The combined GeV and TeV observations of V339 Del limit the ratio of proton to electron luminosities to Lp, 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We report on simultaneous broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar Markarian 501 between 2013 April 1 and August 10, including the first detailed characterization of the synchrotron peak with Swift and NuSTAR. During the campaign, the nearby BL Lac object was observed in both a quiescent and an elevated state. The broadband campaign includes observations with NuSTAR, MAGIC, VERITAS, the Fermi Large Area Telescope, Swift X-ray Telescope and UV Optical Telescope, various ground-based optical instruments, including the GASP-WEBT program, as well as radio observations by OVRO, Metsähovi, and the F-Gamma consortium. Some of the MAGIC observations were affected by a sand layer from the Saharan desert, and had to be corrected using event-by-event corrections derived with a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) facility. This is the first time that LIDAR information is used to produce a physics result with Cherenkov Telescope data taken during adverse atmospheric conditions, and hence sets a precedent for the current and future ground-based gamma-ray instruments. The NuSTAR instrument provides unprecedented sensitivity in hard X-rays, showing the source to display a spectral energy distribution (SED) between 3 and 79 keV consistent with a log-parabolic spectrum and hard X-ray variability on hour timescales. None (of the four extended NuSTAR observations) show evidence of the onset of inverse-Compton emission at hard X-ray energies. We apply a single-zone equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model to five simultaneous broadband SEDs. We find that the SSC model can reproduce the observed broadband states through a decrease in the magnetic field strength coinciding with an increase in the luminosity and hardness of the relativistic leptons responsible for the high-energy emission.

Abstract

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian~180 (Mrk~180) was observed to have an optical outburst in 2006 March, triggering a Target of Opportunity observation with the MAGIC telescope. The source was observed for 12.4 hr and very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission was detected with a significance of 5.5 $\sigma$. An integral flux above 200 GeV of $(2.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-11} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ was measured, corresponding to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. A rather soft spectrum with a photon index of $-3.3\pm0.7$ has been determined. No significant flux variation was found., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, minor revisions

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda_abs ~ 60(26) m, lambda_sct^eff ~ 265(122) m, with significant (15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures (including 4 available as separate figures), to be published in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 has a well-studied history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. However, there are few detailed multiwavelength studies of Markarian 501 during its quiescent state, due to its low luminosity. A short-term multiwavelength study of Markarian 501 was coordinated in March 2009, focusing around a multi-day observation with the Suzaku X-ray satellite and including {\gamma}-ray data from VERITAS, MAGIC, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with the goal of providing a well-sampled multiwavelength baseline measurement of Markarian 501 in the quiescent state. The results of these quiescent-state observations are compared to the historically extreme outburst of April 16, 1997, with the goal of examining variability of the spectral energy distribution between the two states. The derived broadband spectral energy distribution shows the characteristic double-peaked profile. We find that the X-ray peak shifts by over two orders of magnitude in photon energy between the two flux states while the VHE peak varies little. The limited shift in the VHE peak can be explained by the transition to the Klein-Nishina regime. Abstract

Pagetoid urothelial carcinoma in situ (CIS) is a rare variant of bladder cancer that is characterized by an intraepithelial proliferation of large cells arranged singly or in clusters and randomly distributed. These neoplasms deserve recognition and attention, chiefly because they may be overlooked or misdiagnosed as urothelial dysplasia, then causing unsuspected tumor recurrence after surgery. We report on the clinicopathological features and immunohistochemical findings of 11 (14.86%) cases of pagetoid CIS in a retrospective study of 74 cases of conventional carcinoma in situ. Most patients were male ( n=10). Their ages ranged from 31 years to 78 years. The lesion can be present with primary ( n=2) or secondary ( n=9) CIS. Pagetoid CIS is usually a focal lesion occurring in a clinical and histological setting of conventional CIS, and these patients essentially have the same progression and survival rates as patients without pagetoid changes and are treated in the same way. In cases with extensive urothelial denudation, pagetoid CIS may be focally present in otherwise normal-looking urothelium, thus alerting the pathologist to search for additional CIS elsewhere in the bladder. Given that primary extramammary Paget disease of the external genitalia and of the anal canal may extend to the bladder and, conversely, some bladder cases of pagetoid CIS may extend to the urethra, ureter, and beyond to the external genitalia, the differential diagnoses between these two entities represent an important therapeutic consideration. Our data suggest that a panel of immunostains including CK7+/CK20+/TM+ may assist in differentiating urothelial pagetoid CIS from extramammary Paget disease which is known to be CK7+/CK20-.

Póster presentado en el congreso 16th International Symposium on Advances in Extraction Technologies, ExTech, celebrado en Chania, Creta, Grecia, del 25 al 28 de mayo de 2014, The term ¿emerging pollutants¿ stands for the substances that are released in the environment for which currently no regulations are established for their environmental monitoring. Their occurrence is reported worldwide in a range of aquatic environments, such as lakes, rivers, freshwater catchments, estuaries, reservoirs and marine waters. However, there are still few studies on their occurrence, levels and distribution in River Basins from Spain[1,2]. This study develops analytical methods to determineAllopurinol, Alprazolam, Azithromycin, Carbamazepine, Clarithromycin, Codeine, Diazepam, Etoricoxib, Fenofibrate, Metformin, Metoprolol, Paracetamol, Progesterone, Propanolol, Sulfamethoxazole, Telmisartan, Trimethtoprim and Vildagliptin in positive ion mode and Bezafibrate, Bisphenol A, Butylparaben, Chloramphenicol, Chlorfibric acid, Diclofenac, Ethylparaben, Flufenamic Acid, Gemfibrozil, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Methylparaben, Naproxen, Propylparaben, Salicylic Acid, Thiamphenicol, Triclocarban, Triclosan, Warfarinin negative ion mode in water and sediments. Furthermore, to show their realiability, the procedures were applied to the analyse these analytes in samples from the Turia River. Freshwaters and sediments samples were collected on different parts of Túria River, East of Spain. Samples were conserved frozen at -20ºC until realized analysis. Sediments were extracted with QuEChERS method and water were filtered and extracted with SPE that was realized with Strata-X 33U Polymeric Reversed Phase to 200mg/6ml from Phenomenex. These cartridges were conditioned with 6ml of Methanol and 6ml of distilled water. Water sample (1 L) was passed with 400mbar/hPa of vacuum through the cartridge.Once the sample was passed, the vacuum was kept during 15 min. Then, 6ml of methanol were passed through cartridge without vacuum,collected in a tube and evaporated with a Stuart air compressed evaporator. The extract was reconstituted with 1ml 30:70 Methanol: Water. Only one mobile phase was used for both, positive and negative ionization modes in order to save time and money. Several mobile phase for Pharmaceuticals, Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and some illicit drugs were tested, such asmethanol-water 5mM of ammonium formate, acetonitrile-water 0.1% of formic acid or methanol-water 5 mM ammonium fluoride. Methanol-Water with 5mM of Ammonium fluoride was selectedin both ion mode with good results of sensitivity and responses. These substances were determined with an Agilent Technologies HPLC with a Triple Quad LC/MS in negative and positive ion mode (depending of PPCP) using for compound separation a Sunfire C18 analytical column of 2.1 x 50mm and 3.5 ¿m particle diameter. The optimal mobile phase used was a gradient of 5mM ammonium fluoride in water and 5mM ammonium fluoride in methanol with a flow rate of 0.2mL/min in a gradient that starts with a 30% of methanol and ends with 95 % in 12 min, which is maintained 8 min more.
