We present an innovative contactless method suitable to study in-plane thermal transport based on beam-offset frequency-domain thermoreflectance using a one-dimensional heat source with uniform power distribution. Using a one-dimensional heat source provides a number of advantages as compared to point-like heat sources, as typically used in time- and frequency-domain thermoreflectance experiments, just to name a few: (i) it leads to a slower spatial decay of the temperature field in the direction perpendicular to the line-shaped heat source, allowing to probe the temperature field at larger distances from the heater, hence, enhancing the sensitivity to in-plane thermal transport; (ii) the frequency range of interest is typically kHz. This rather low frequency range is convenient regarding the cost of the required excitation laser system but, most importantly, it allows the study of materials without the presence of a metallic transducer with almost no influence of the finite optical penetration depth of the pump and probe beams on the thermal phase lag, which arises from the large thermal penetration depth imposed by the used frequency range. We also show that for the case of a harmonic thermal excitation source, the phase lag between the thermal excitation and thermal response of the sample exhibits a linear dependence with their spatial offset, where the slope is proportional to the inverse of the thermal diffusivity of the material. We demonstrate the applicability of this method to the cases of: (i) suspended thin films of Si and PDPP4T, (ii) Bi bulk samples, and (iii) Si, glass, and highly-oriented pyrollitic graphite (HOPG) bulk samples with a thin metallic transducer. Finally, we also show that it is possible to study in-plane heat transport on substrates with rather low thermal diffusivity, e.g., glass, even using a metallic transducer. This article is part of the Organic Bioelectronics special issue. Electronic doping in organic materials has remained an elusive concept for several decades. It drew considerable attention in the early days in the quest for organic materials with high electrical conductivity, paving the way for the pioneering work on pristine organic semiconductors (OSCs) and their eventual use in a plethora of applications. Despite this early trend, however, recent strides in the field of organic electronics have been made hand in hand with the development and use of dopants to the point that are now ubiquitous. Here, we give an overview of all important advances in the area of doping of organic semiconductors and their applications. We first review the relevant literature with particular focus on the physical processes involved, discussing established mechanisms but also newly proposed theories. We then continue with a comprehensive summary of the most widely studied dopants to date, placing particular emphasis on the chemical strategies toward the synthesis of molecules with improved functionality. The processing routes toward doped organic films and the important doping–processing–nanostructure relationships, are also discussed. We conclude the review by highlighting how doping can enhance the operating characteristics of various organic devices. The strong but narrow-bandwidth absorption spectra of organic semiconductors make them excellent candidates for semi-transparent solar cell applications in which color specificity is important. In this study, using a hybrid heterojunction combining the transparent inorganic semiconductor copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) with organic semiconductors (C70, PC70BM, C60, ITIC, IT-4F, or Y6), we show that simple color-tunable solar cells can be fabricated in which the transmission spectrum is determined solely by choice of the organic semiconductor. Using a joint electrical-optical model, we show that it is possible to combine the unique attributes of high photovoltage and color tunability to use these heterojunctions as photovoltaic windows in tandem photoelectrochemical (PEC)-photovoltaic (PV) cells. We demonstrate that this configuration can lead to a reduction in the parasitic absorption losses in the PEC-PV cells and, thus, to solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies (>3%) that are higher than that predicted using the traditionally used architecture in which the PV is placed behind the PEC., F.E. thanks the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for support via a postdoctoral prize fellowship. A combinatorial study of the effect of in-mixing of various guests on the thermoelectric properties of the host workhorse polymer poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT) is presented. Specifically, the composition and thickness for doped films of PBTTT blended with different polymers are varied. Some blends at guest weight fractions around 10–15% exhibit up to a fivefold increase in power factor compared to the reference material, leading to zT values around 0.1. Molecular based photovoltaics can play a key role in the transition to a sustainable energy paradigm, as is the most sustainable solar cell technology (in terms of energy investment on return), and simultaneously is amenable to be solution processed into any shape, can be as light as a feather, and can be produced with the largest colour pallet and transparency degree imaginable. Indeed, there is an infinite number of molecules that can be synthesised to match our needs. The bottleneck then becomes how to identify and screen potential candidates, or, in other words, how to find the needle in the haystack. In this talk we will first describe a novel methodology for the fast evaluation of donor/acceptor systems for photovoltaics. The new approach is based on the fabrication of samples with gradients in the relevant parameters of interest that represent a large fraction of the corresponding parameter space. In particular, we fabricate gradients in thickness [1, 2], microstructure [1, 2], composition [2, 3] and apply hyperspectral imaging to correlate material and device properties. The method can be used both, for evaporated [4] and solution processed systems [1-3], is up to 100 faster than conventional optimization protocols, uses less than 50 mg of each active layer material and generates hundreds to millions of data points per system [3]. Then we show how this machinery can be used to find design rules for the optimum composition in non-fullerene acceptors based devices.

If time allows, I will illustrate how samples with controlled gradients in relevant parameters can be employed to introduce novel device concepts (e.g. microcavity based minituarized spectrometers [6]) and to perform accurate fundamental studies.

A salient feature of hybrid lead halide perovskites is the peculiar interplay between the organic and inorganic degrees of freedom, which plays a crucial role in their structural, vibrational, optical and transport properties. In this respect, unraveling the associated structure-property relationships is instrumental for the fundamental understanding not only of their exceptional optoelectronic performance but also their in-operando stability. Surprisingly, hybrid halide perovskites exhibit a great defect tolerance in their performance, despite their mechanical softness and the consequent low energetic barriers for point defect formation and ion migration. In a recent publication [1], we have constructed the complete phase diagram of organic-cation solid-solutions of lead iodide perovskites (FAxMA1-xPbI3, where MA stands for methylammonium and FA for formamidinium) with compositions x ranging from 0 to 1 in steps of 0.1 and in the temperature range from 10 to 365 K by combining Raman scattering and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The occurrence of phase transitions was inferred from both the temperature-induced changes in the optical emission energies and/or the phonon frequencies and linewidths, complementing X-ray and neutron scattering literature data. Here we present a byproduct of this work, which concerns the study of the evolution of shallow-defect signatures observed in the PL spectra at low temperatures. The strong free-exciton PL of the perovskites, apart from the discontinuous changes in the energy of its maximum at the different structural transitions, also exhibits a strong decrease in linewidth at low temperatures. This allows for the observation of shallow-defect-related (donor and/or acceptor) bound exciton complexes. The defect-related signatures exhibit a clear trend regarding the composition of the mixed crystals, indicating that the material becomes less prone to defect formation with increasing FA content. Lead halide perovskites are ferroelectricity-free, whereas domains observed in PFM measurements are likely due to twinning driven by strain compensation., The existence of ferroelectricity in organic–inorganic perovskite thin films has been under debate over the past few years. If proven to exist, its magnitude in comparison to other known processes occurring in perovskite, such as electronic and ionic conductivities, will determine its importance for their optoelectronic properties. In a recent paper, our group aimed at contributing to the understanding of this topic by extending the range of measurements beyond what is conventionally carried out. In particular, we employed three techniques, namely, direct piezoelectric force microscopy, piezoelectric force microscopy, and electrostatic force microscopy, which we applied to two perovskite materials, prepared with control of film thickness and grain sizes that enabled the evaluation of morphological differences. Based on our experimental data, we concluded that lead halide perovskites are ferroelectricity-free.

Hybrid organic-inorganic composites could play an important role to improve the performance of flexible thermoelectric devices. Optimization of the organic component is an essential part of this purpose. Here, we focus on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based polymers, which are among the best candidates for thermoelectric harvesting of waste heat targeting near-room temperature applications, i.e., below 150ºC. In fact, this system is well known for its environmental stability, high electrical conductivity and solution processability. We investigate the optical properties and the thermoelectric performance of PEDOT doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) thin films with different thicknesses ranging from 100 nm to about 2 ¿m. Thin films of PEDOT:PSS have been deposited by solution processing, mainly using blade coating. The optical properties and precise thicknesses of the thin films have been studied in the visible range using spectroscopic ellipsometry and standard FTIR measurements. The complex refractive index was determined for PEDOT:PSS thin films with different thicknesses. In particular, the precise thickness determination that can be obtained through ellipsometry measurements is used as input parameter to evaluate thermal conductivity measurements, for which a precise determination of the thickness is mandatory. Thermal conductivity measurements were performed using frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR). The phase lag between the pump and probe lasers as a function of the excitation frequency and the heat equation show that the thermal conductivity of a 100 nm thick layer of PEDOT:PSS was about 0.3 W m-1K-1, in good agreement with recent determinations.

Among other peculiarities, lead halide perovskites exhibit an atypical temperature dependence of the fundamental optical gap: it decreases in energy with decreasing temperature. So far, reports ascribe such a behavior to a particularly strong electron-phonon renormalization of the band gap, neglecting completely contributions from thermal expansion. However, high pressure experiments performed, for instance, on the archetypal perovskite MAPbI3, yield a negative pressure coefficient for the gap of the tetragonal room-temperature phase, which speaks against the assumption of a negligible gap shift due to thermal expansion. Here I will show that, combining PL measurements as a function of temperature but ambient pressure and pressure-dependent PL measurements at room temperature, it is possible to assess the equal footing of thermal expansion and electron-phonon coupling regarding the temperature-induced gap renormalization in MAPbI3. Furthermore, this result possesses general validity, holding also for the tetragonal or cubic phase, stable at ambient conditions, of most halide perovskite counterparts.

In this talk I will first describe a novel methodology for the fast evaluation of donor/acceptor systems for photovoltaics. The new approach, up to 100 times faster than conventional optimization protocols, is based on the use of Raman to quantify the local thickness and composition in samples with lateral gradients on parameters of interest [1, 2]. Raman images are combined with photocurrent images (LBIC) to identify the optimum conditions. We demonstrate the potential of the methodology optimizing three systems PCDTBT:PC70BM, PTB7-Th:PC70BM and PffBT4T-2OD:PC70BM, obtaining efficiencies circa 6%, 8% and 10%, respectively, using less than 50 mg of each polymer in the process [2]. I will show that this method can be used also to analyze blends containing non-fullerene acceptors and ternary systems [3] and it can be extended for the case of evaporated bilayer solar cells by using moving shadow masks [4] as well as polymer:polymer processed through microfluidic chips dispensers [5] Finally, I will describe our first attempts to use these large datasets (>25.000 points per material system) as input in machine learning algorithms and what we could learn from this exercise [3]. Earth receives from the Sun electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from the UV (< 250 nm) to the mid IR (> 2500 nm). Typical solar cells having a single photoactive layer can harvest a fraction of the energy above their band gap (around 1000 nm). How can this range be extended to capture more efficiently the solar energy? Making solar cell stacks with active layers exhibiting different band gaps, aka tandem solar cells, has been the most widely used approach. Despite the academic success of this approach, commercial implementation has thus far being limited to niche applications due to the extraordinary fabrication complexity of tandem cells. In this talk, I will present a series of new opportunities that emerge when using molecular based technologies, which are characterized by a low carbon footprint and amenability for chemically tuning their optoelectronic properties. First, I will demonstrate that multicomponent systems are the most efficient strategy to obtain a colour-on-demand solar cell technology [1]. As an example, I will show a greenhouse design that simultaneously optimizes photovoltaic performance and crop growth [2]. Then, I will introduce a high throughput screening method that enables the fast experimental evaluation of the complex parameter space of multicomponent systems aimed at obtaining panchromatic absorption [3-4]. Finally, I will discuss two methods of extending the harvesting capabilities into the infrared by two very different approaches. One, using photonic structures to strongly enhance the charge transfer absorption [5]. Second, make use of the Seebeck effect to directly convert heat into electricity through solar organic thermoelectric generators [6, 7]. In this talk I will first introduce the basis of organic photovoltaics and the materials behind. Then I will present the efforts of my team in two fronts: 1) how to make a solar cell with any desired colour [1-3]; 2) how to evaluate solar cell materials using high throughput screening methodologies [3-6]. I will finish by presenting our first trials to use machine learning methodologies in the field of organic photovoltaics. El rendimiento de las células solares basadas en moléculas y polímeros semiconductores (fotovoltaica orgánica) ha experimentado un vertiginoso progreso desde valores inferiores al 1 % hasta sobrepasar el 10 % en poco más de una década. Esta rápida evolución ha sido motivada por la posibilidad de generar paneles solares flexibles, ligeros y de bajo coste mediante métodos de fabricación parecidos a la impresión de periódicos. En este artículo se revisarán los tres pilares fundamentales sobre los que se ha basado el desarrollo de la tecnología fotovoltaica orgánica y que suponen un cambio conceptual radical con respecto a las tecnologías convencionales. Cuando en 1832, Chrales Goodyear sintetizó por primera vez una muestra de caucho en su laboratorio, sin duda estaba lejos de imaginar que esta clase de materiales -los polímeros, entre los que se cuentan varios tipos de materiales sintéticos, como los plásticos-, moldearían la sociedad del siglo XX. Tampoco Bi Sheng pudo imaginarse, cuando inventó la primera imprenta hace más de mil años, que muchas generaciones después -en el sentido de evolución de modelos de imprenta- se conseguiría "imprimir" un dispositivo electrónico que convierte a luz solar en electricidad. Prestigiosos científicos de todo el mundo están desarrollando una nueva tecnología que podría contribuir significativamente a paliar los problemas energéticos actuales: se trata de células solares baratas y eficientes, hechas de plástico y procesadas mediante impresión de tinta.

In this work, we have implemented a theoretical methodology to study in depth colour tuning in polymer-based organic photovoltaic cells that uses experimentally complex refractive indices. We compare quantitatively basic interference effects (through active layer thickness), binaries with different donors and different acceptors, and ternary systems where the third component is either active or a simple dye. For hybrid perovskite solar cells, we compare the colour tuning capability of blending and alloying. Additionally, we show that the same theoretical framework can be employed for the so-called inverse problem, i.e. determining the best solar cell parameters (specific materials, donor:acceptor ratio and photoactive film thickness) that can reproduce a desired set of chromaticity coordinates.

Microfluidic technologies are highly adept at generating controllable compositional gradients in fluids, a feature that has accelerated the understanding of the importance of chemical gradients in biological processes. That said, the development of versatile methods to generate controllable compositional gradients in the solid-state has been far more elusive. The ability to produce such gradients would provide access to extensive compositional libraries, thus enabling the high-throughput exploration of the parametric landscape of functional solids and devices in a resource-, time-, and cost-efficient manner. Herein, the synergic integration of microfluidic technologies is reported with blade coating to enable the controlled formation of compositional lateral gradients in solution. Subsequently, the transformation of liquid-based compositional gradients into solid-state thin films using this method is demonstrated. To demonstrate efficacy of the approach, microfluidic-assisted blade coating is used to optimize blending ratios in organic solar cells. Importantly, this novel technology can be easily extended to other solution processable systems that require the formation of solid-state compositional lateral gradients., Advanced Energy Materials, 10 (33)

Photolithography has been a major enabling tool for miniaturisation of silicon devices that underpinned the electronics revolution. Rapid, high-resolution patterning of key material characteristics would, similarly, accelerate the advent of molecular electronics and photonics. Here we advance a versatile approach employing local diffusion of functional small-molecular compounds through a solution-processed ‘molecular gate’ interlayer. Diffusion is activated using laser light or solvent vapour jets―a process that can be finely modulated down to molecule-on-demand deposition precision with almost photolithographic resolution (3 S cm–1 for improved electronic devices. Synthesis, processing, and characterization are reported for a series of tetracyanoplatinate Magnus’ salt (TCN-MS) derivatives—soluble derivatives of the generally intractable Magnus’ green salt—that feature the general structure [Pt(NH2R)4][Pt(CN)4] where R is a branched alkyl group or a ω-phenylalkyl group. In solutions, these coordination compounds generally dissolve on the level of individual ion pairs as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis. To enable the formation of quasi-one-dimensional linear stacks of Pt(II) atoms in thin films, the matrix-assisted assembly is employed, whereby the compounds are codissolved with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), followed by film casting, thermally activated assembly, and eventual removal of PEO. Remarkably, assembled TCN-MS inorganic polymers exhibit bright blue-green photoluminescence. A detailed investigation of the assembly process and simultaneously modified solid-state optical properties is performed using a range of microscopy, optical and vibrational spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. Given their unusual combination of optical properties, namely, transparency in the visible region, high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (up to 13% in first-demonstration samples), and large Stokes shifts (up to 1 eV), TCN-MS derivatives are proposed as a promising class of light-emitting materials for emerging applications in molecular optoelectronics, the potential and challenges of which are discussed., ACS Omega, 4 (6), ISSN:2470-1343

Els avenços recents en el camp de la fotovoltaica orgànica han situat aquest àmbit a l’avantguarda de la investigació sobre energies renovables. En la darrera dècada, els dispositius fotovoltaics orgànics han guanyat molta atenció gràcies a la seva versatilitat química, el seu baix pes, la seva flexibilitat i la seva creixent eficiència. Com que són compatibles amb la tecnologia rotlle-a-rotlle, els processos de fabricació necessaris per produir aquests dispositius són fàcilment escalables, i el seu ús eficient de materials fa que sigui una tecnologia comercialment sostenible que pot contribuir a resoldre la nostra actual crisi energètica. Tanmateix, aquesta tecnologia encara s’enfronta a diversos obstacles que n’impedeixen el desenvolupament generalitzat. D’una banda, les baixes, mobilitats, de càrrega i els coeficients, d’absorció relativament modestos, limiten l’eficiència final de les cèl·lules solars. A nivell de dispositius, la tecnologia s’enfronta a diferents problemes relacionats amb l’estabilitat tèrmica limitada, així com a les dificultats de fabricació en tàndem, per nomenar-ne alguns. Aquesta tesi explora tres noves estratègies enfocades a millorar l’eficiència global dels dispositius fotovoltaics orgànics, dissenyades específicament per augmentar l’absorció de la llum, millorar la mobilitat dels portadors de càrrega i reduir les pèrdues per termalització. Per abordar un programa de recerca tan ambiciós, primer hem desenvolupat una plataforma de caracterització que ens permet mesurar dispositius, fotovoltaics orgánics de forma reproduïble entre 5 i 10 vegades més ràpidament, en un procediment totalment automatitzat, reduint els errors humans, homogeneïtzant els resultats entre els diferents usuaris, i estalviant una quantitat significativa de temps i esforç. El capítol 4 demostra la incorporació d’estructures fotòniques en els dispositius fotovoltaics com a mitjà per augmentar l’absorció. En concret, mostrem que l’absorció de l’estat de transferència de càrrega dels dispositius fotovoltaics orgànics, pot ser millorada mitjançant la nanoestructuració de la seva capa activa en forma de cristall fotònic 2D. Aquesta millora de l’absorció es tradueix en un augment de l’EQE, especialment pronunciat per sota del band-gap dels materials fotoactius. El capítol 5 es basa en la hipòtesi que la mobilitat dels portadors de càrrega es pot incrementar augmentant la temperatura del material fotoactiu. Demostrem que l’eficiència augmenta amb la temperatura, i aquest efecte és especialment pronunciat en capes actives més gruixudes, on la mobilitat tendeix a ser el principal factor limitant del rendiment. Estudiem el rendiment de 10 barreges fotoactives diferents a diferents temperatures, observant que només alguns daquests sistemes presenten canvis reversibles amb la temperatura. Per entendre aquest comportament, investiguem amb més detall els dispositius fabricats amb PBDBT:ITIC, mostrant que aquest sistema té una microestructura resistent a la temperatura i un transport de càrrega notablement millorat a altes temperatures, fet que es tradueix en darrera instància en una millor eficiència. Per dur a terme aquests experiments, dissenyem i fabriquem un muntatge experimental a mida capaç de caracteritzar els nostres dispositius mentre es controla amb precisió la temperatura de la capa activa. Finalment, els dos últims capítols demostren la viabilitat d’un concepte de cèl·lula solar en tàndem, aparentment inexplorat, basat en la divisió espectral, que hem anomenat cèl·lula solar RAINBOW o arc de Sant Martí. Aquesta arquitectura combina un element òptic de dispersió de la longitud d’ona i una disposició monolítica en el pla de diverses cèl·lules amb un gradient d’Eg discret. En el capítol 6 estudiem aquesta geometria des d’un punt de vista teòric, realitzant simulacions i càlculs amb materials ideals i reals que estableixen les bases teòriques de la teoria de la cèl·lula solar RAINBOW, així com les directrius per a la selecció de materials. Mentre que al capítol 7 construïm un muntatge experimental capaç de caracteritzar i optimitzar les cèl·lules solars RAINBOW. Els càlculs i les mesures reals concorden, i les cèl·lules solars RAINBOW proporcionen fins a un 34% més d’eficiència que la subcel·la de millor rendiment. Com a prova de concepte, hem desenvolupat tècniques de deposició parcial per fabricar dispositius RAINBOW monolítics horitzontals en tàndem totalment funcionals. Los recientes avances en el campo de la fotovoltaica orgánica han situado este ámbito en la vanguardia de la investigación sobre energías renovables. En la última década, los dispositivos fotovoltaicos orgánicos han ganado mucha atención gracias a su versatilidad química, su bajo peso, su flexibilidad y su creciente eficiencia. Al ser compatibles con la tecnología rollo-a-rollo, los procesos de fabricación necesarios para producir estos dispositivos son fácilmente escalables, y su uso eficiente de materiales hace que sea una tecnología comercialmente sostenible que puede contribuir a resolver nuestra actual crisis energética. Sin embargo, esta tecnología aún se enfrenta a varios obstáculos que impiden su desarrollo generalizado. Por un lado, las bajas movilidades de carga y los coeficientes de absorción relativamente modestos limitan la eficiencia final de las células solares. A nivel de dispositivos, la tecnología se enfrenta a diferentes problemas relacionados con la estabilidad térmica limitada, así como a las dificultades de fabricación en tándem, por nombrar algunos. Esta tesis explora tres estrategias novedosas enfocadas a mejorar la eficiencia global de los dispositivos fotovoltaicos orgánicos, diseñadas específicamente para aumentar la absorción de la luz, mejorar la movilidad de los portadores de carga y reducir las pérdidas por termalización. Para abordar un programa de investigación tan ambicioso, primero desarrollamos una plataforma de caracterización que nos permitió medir dispositivos fotovoltaicos orgánicos de forma reproducible entre 5 y 10 veces más rápidamente, en un procedimiento totalmente automatizado, reduciendo los errores humanos, homogeneizando los resultados entre los diferentes usuarios, y ahorrando una cantidad significativa de tiempo y esfuerzo. El capítulo 4 demuestra la incorporación de estructuras fotónicas en los dispositivos fotovoltaicos como medio para aumentar la absorción. En concreto, mostramos que la absorción del estado de transferencia de carga de los dispositivos fotovoltaicos orgánicos, puede ser mejorada mediante la nanoestructuración de su capa activa en forma de cristal fotónico 2D. Esta mejora de la absorción se traduce en un aumento del EQE, especialmente pronunciado por debajo del band-gap de los materiales fotoactivos. El capítulo 5 se basa en la hipótesis de que la movilidad de los portadores de carga puede incrementarse aumentando la temperatura del material fotoactivo. Demostramos que la eficiencia aumenta con la temperatura, siendo este efecto especialmente pronunciado en capas activas más gruesas, donde la movilidad tiende a ser el principal factor limitante del rendimiento. Estudiamos el rendimiento de 10 mezclas fotoactivas diferentes a distintas temperaturas, observando que sólo algunos de esos sistemas presentan cambios reversibles con la temperatura. Para entender este comportamiento, investigamos con más detalle los dispositivos fabricados con PBDBT:ITIC, mostrando que este sistema tiene una microestructura resistente a la temperatura y un transporte de carga notablemente mejorado a altas temperaturas, lo que se traduce en última instancia en una mejor eficiencia. Para llevar a cabo estos experimentos, diseñamos y fabricamos un montaje experimental a medida capaz de caracterizar nuestros dispositivos mientras se controla con precisión la temperatura de la capa activa. Por último, los dos últimos capítulos demuestran la viabilidad de un concepto de célula solar en tándem, aparentemente inexplorado, basado en la división espectral, que hemos denominado célula solar RAINBOW. Esta arquitectura combina un elemento óptico de dispersión de la longitud de onda y una disposición monolítica en el plano de varias células con un gradiente de Eg discreto. En el capítulo 6 estudiamos esta geometría desde un punto de vista teórico, realizando simulaciones y cálculos con materiales ideales y reales que establecen el andamiaje de la teoría de la célula solar RAINBOW, así como las directrices para la selección de materiales. Mientras que en el capítulo 7 construimos un montaje experimental capaz de caracterizar y optimizar las células solares RAINBOW. Los cálculos y las medidas reales concuerdan, y las células solares RAINBOW proporcionan hasta un 34% más de eficiencia que la subcelda de mejor rendimiento. Como prueba de concepto, hemos desarrollado técnicas de deposición parcial para fabricar dispositivos RAINBOW monolíticos horizontals en tándem totalmente funcionales. Recent advances in Organic Photovoltaics have brought this field to the forefront of renewable energy research. In the past decade, organic photovoltaic devices have gained plenty of attention thanks to their chemical tunability, light weight, flexibility and increasing efficiency. Being roll-toroll compatible, the manufacturing processes needed to produce such devices are easily scalable, and their low material usage and low embedded energy make for a sustainable commercial technology that can contribute to solving our current energy crisis. This technology, however, still faces several obstacles that prevent its widespread development. On the one hand, low charge mobilities and relatively modest absorption coefficients limit the final solar cell efficiency, while the complex synthetic routes of the best performing materials limit their economic viability. On a device level, the technology faces different issues related to limited thermal stability, as well as tandem fabrication difficulties, to name but a few. This thesis explores three novel strategies focused on improving the overall efficiency of organic photovoltaic devices, specifically designed to increase light absorption, enhance charge carrier mobility, and reduce thermalization losses. In order to tackle such an ambitious research program, we first developed a characterization platform that enabled us to measure organic photovoltaic devices in a highly reproducible manner and between 5 and 10 times faster than sequential methods. This platform consists in the combination of hardware and software that enables any user to characterize a photovoltaic device in a fully automated procedure, reducing human errors, homogenizing the results amongst all different users, and saving a significant amount of time and effort. This platform is described in Chapter 3, with further developments also included in other chapters. After this technological chapter, the thesis then details the three approaches to improve efficiency. Chapter 4 demonstrates the incorporation of photonic structures within photovoltaic devices as means to increase absorption. Specifically, we show that the charge transfer state absorption of organic photovoltaic devices based on P3HT:PC61BM and PBTTT:PC71BM, can be enhanced by nanostructuring their active layer in the shape of a 2D photonic crystal. This absorption enhancement results in an increased EQE, which is especially pronounced below the band-gap of the blend, leading to modest improvements in solar cell photocurrent and good performance near-infrared photodetectors. Chapter 5 is based on the hypothesis that charge carrier mobility can be increased by raising photoactive material temperature. To evaluate this, we monitor solar cell performance as a function of active layer temperature. We show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is enhanced with temperature, with this effect being especially pronounced on thicker active layers, where mobility tends to be the main performance limiting factor. We studied the performance of 10 different photoactive blends at different temperatures, noting that only some of those systems exhibit reversible changes with temperature. In order to understand this behaviour, we investigated in more detail devices made of PBDBT:ITIC, showing that this system has a temperature resistant microstructure and notably improved charge transport at high temperatures, ultimately translated to better PCE. To perform these experiments, we designed and manufactured a custom experimental setup that is able to characterize our devices while accurately controlling the active layer temperature. Finally, the last two chapters demonstrate the feasibility of a, seemingly unexplored, tandem solar cell concept based on spectral splitting, which we named RAINBOW solar cell. This architecture combines a wavelength dispersive optical element and a monolithic in plane (c.f. stack in normal tandem) multi-cell layout with a discrete Eg gradient. In Chapter 6 we study this geometry from a theoretical point of view, performing simulations and calculations with ideal and real materials that establish the scaffolding of RAINBOW solar cell theory, as well as guidelines for material selection. While in Chapter 7 we build an experimental setup capable of characterizing and optimizing real RAINBOW solar cells. The calculations and real measurements are in good agreement, with RAINBOW solar cells providing up to 34% higher efficiency than the best performing sub-cell. As a final proof of concept, we developed partial deposition techniques to manufacture a fully functional monolithic horizontal tandem RAINBOW device. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. L’eficiència de la fotovoltaica orgànica està augmentant ràpidament, però el seu rendiment en dispositius a gran escala i la seva estabilitat són molt difícils d’aconseguir. El desenvolupament de la tecnologia fotovoltaica ha estat intens, abordant problemes crítics mitjançant l’augment d’escala dels mòduls OPV des de dispositius a escala de laboratori fins a mòduls a escala industrial. L’assoliment de processos d’impressió i recobriment fiables per a mòduls a gran escala ha estat un repte fins ara i, per tant, ha estat el tema de recerca d’aquesta tesi. Roll-to-roll és una tècnica de processament aplicada en aquesta tesi per aconseguir una solució d’alt rendiment per a mòduls OPV a gran escala. En aquest treball s’han demostrat mòduls OPV basats en P3HT: PCBM i P3HT:o-IDTBR sobre un substrat flexible, obtinguts a gran escala. La nova metodologia destaca els reptes per ampliar els petits dispositius de laboratori a mòduls més grans. Entendre els passos crítics en el procés d’augment d’escala és decisiu per abordar els esforços de recerca per reduir la bretxa esmentada. En un capítol, analitzem les pèrdues d’eficiència associades a diversos dels passos principals implicats en la via d’augment d’escala dels dispositius OPV, des del recobriment per doctor blade a escala de laboratori fins al recobriment preindustrial fet per roll-to-roll. Mostrem que quan s’utilitzen materials a la capa activa per als quals el rendiment és tolerant a les variacions de gruix/microestructura, els passos crítics estan relacionats amb les capes de bloqueig dels portadors de càrrega, així com les pèrdues potencials degudes a l’absorció parasitària als elèctrodes. També hem investigat l’empaquetament molecular de les molècules petites i la seva correlació amb el rendiment del dispositiu. Les nostres dades suggereixen que la cristalinitat tant del donant d’electrons com de l’acceptor d’electrons són una font de separació i recombinació de fases i, per tant, a més de l’alineació del nivell d’energia, s’ha d’aconseguir una estructura òptima d’ordenació entre el donant i l’acceptador d’electrons. Hem aconseguit la nostra investigació obtenint els espectres d’absorció òptica tant en estat sòlid com en solució, voltammetria cíclica i GIWAXS per a les pel·lícules en estat sòlid. S’ha investigat no només el processament dels mòduls, sinó també la seva geometria i els resultats es reporten en un tercer capítol. La geometria de l’elèctrode impresa per la serigrafia es va optimitzar per obtenir un millor rendiment fotovoltaic dels mòduls OPV. A més, s’ha realitzat un estudi comparatiu dels diferents materials dels elèctrodes serigrafiats. El millor mòdul OPV va mostrar un valor PCE de l’1% en condicions AM 1.5. La degradació dels mòduls fotovoltaics processats en solució segueix sent un problema dominant per a acomplir les exigències industrials. Atès que la degradació dels mòduls es correlaciona principalment amb els components de la capa activa, també hem investigat i comparat la degradació dels mòduls roll-to-roll basats en heterounions fetes amb acceptors de fullerè i no fullerè (P3HT: PCBM P3HT: o-IDTBR, respectivament). per tenir més coneixements per millorar la vida útil dels mòduls OPV per a l’aplicació a escala industrial. S’utilitzen dos tipus de sistemes d’encapsulació (només PET i làmina de barrera) per aïllar els mòduls de les condicions ambientals, com ara la difusió d’oxigen i humitat als mòduls OPV. Els mòduls basats en P3HT: PCBM i P3HT:o-IDTBR, encapsulats amb làmina de barrera han mostrat activitat fins a 522 i 249 hores, respectivament, mentre que els mòduls encapsulats amb làmina de PET van mostrar activitat durant 21 hores. A més, no només es va trobar que els components de la capa fotoactiva eren responsables del procés de degradació, sinó que també hi va tenir un paper la capa transportadora de buits. El desarrollo de la tecnología fotovoltaica ha sido intenso durante los últimos años, abordando problemas críticos a través del aumento del tamaño de los módulos OPV desde dispositivos a escala de laboratorio a módulos a escala industrial. El logro de procesos fiables de impresión y recubrimiento para módulos a gran escala ha sido un desafío hasta el momento y, por lo tanto, ha sido el tema de investigación de esta tesis. La técnica de roll-to-roll es una técnica de procesamiento aplicada en esta tesis para lograr una solución de alto rendimiento para módulos OPV a gran escala. En este trabajo se ha demostrado la fabricación de módulos OPV basados en P3HT: PCBM y P3HT:o-IDTBR sobre un sustrato flexible, obtenidos a gran escala (Capítulo 3). La nueva metodología destaca los desafíos para escalar los pequeños dispositivos de laboratorio a módulos más grandes. Comprender los pasos críticos en el proceso de escalado es decisivo para abordar los esfuerzos de investigación y así disminuir la brecha antes mencionada. En el Capítulo 5, analizamos las pérdidas de eficiencia asociadas con varios de los pasos principales involucrados en el proceso de escalado de los dispositivos OPV, desde el recubrimiento por doctor blade a escala de laboratorio hasta el recubrimiento por roll-to-roll preindustrial. En el capítulo, demostramos que cuando se utilizan materiales en la capa activa cuyo rendimiento es tolerante con respecto a variaciones de espesor/microestructura, los pasos críticos están relacionados con las capas de bloqueo de portadores de carga, así como con las pérdidas potenciales debidas a la absorción parásita en los electrodos. También investigamos el empaquetamiento molecular de las moléculas pequeñas y su correlación con el rendimiento del dispositivo en el Capítulo 4. Nuestros datos sugieren que la cristalinidad tanto del donante de electrones como del aceptor de electrones es una fuente de separación y recombinación de fases y, por lo tanto, además de la alineación del nivel de energía, se debe lograr una estructura de ordenamiento óptima entre el donante de electrones y el aceptor de electrones. Apoyamos nuestra investigación obteniendo los espectros de absorción óptica tanto en solución como en estado sólido, voltamperometría cíclica y GIWAXS para las películas en estado sólido. No solo se ha investigado el procesamiento de los módulos sino también su geometría y los resultados se reportan en un tercer capítulo. Se optimizó la geometría de los electrodos impresos por la serigrafía para obtener un mejor rendimiento fotovoltaico de los módulos OPV. Además, se ha realizado un estudio comparativo de los diferentes materiales de electrodos serigrafiados. El módulo OPV más eficiente mostró un valor de PCE del 1% en condiciones AM 1.5. La degradación de los módulos fotovoltaicos procesados en solución sigue siendo un problema crucial para poder cumplir con los requisitos industriales que hemos tratado en el Capítulo 6. Dado que la degradación de los módulos se correlaciona principalmente con los componentes de la capa activa, hemos investigado y comparado también la degradación de los módulos preparados por roll-to-roll basados en heterouniones formadas por aceptores de fullereno y no fullereno (P3HT: PCBM P3HT:o-IDTBR, respectivamente)para tener más información para mejorar la vida útil de los módulos OPV para la aplicación a escala industrial. Se utilizan dos tipos de sistemas de encapsulación (solo PET y lámina de barrera) para aislar los módulos de las condiciones ambientales, como la difusión de oxígeno y humedad en los módulos OPV. Their performance in large-scale devices and their stability is, however, still highly challenging. The development of photovoltaic technology has been intense, addressing critical issues through the upscaling of OPVs from lab scale devices to industrial scale modules. The achievement of reliable printing and coating processes for large-scale modules has been challenging thus far, and it has been therefore one of the main topics of research in this thesis. Roll-to-roll is a processing technique applied in this thesis to achieve high throughput solution for large-scale OPV modules. OPV modules based on P3HT: PCBM and P3HT:o-IDTBR on a flexible substrate, obtained at large-scale, have been demonstrated in this work (Chapter 3). New methodology highlights the challenges to scale up the small lab devices to larger modules. Understanding the critical steps in the upscaling process is decisive to address the research efforts towards decreasing the aforementioned gap. In Chapter 5, we quantify the efficiency losses associated with several of the main steps involved in the up-scaling pathway of the OPV devices, from lab-scale blade coating to pre-industrial slot die roll-to-roll coating. We show that when using materials in the active layer for which the performance is tolerant to thickness/microstructure variations, the critical steps are related to the charge carrier blocking layers, as well as potential losses due to parasitic absorption in the electrodes. We have also investigated the molecular packing of the small molecules and its correlation with the device’s performance in Chapter 4. Our data suggest that the crystallinity tendency of both electron donor and electron acceptor are a source of phase separation and recombination, and thus besides energy level alignment, an optimum of ordering structure between the electron donor and the electron acceptor have to be achieved. We supported our investigation by obtaining the optical absorption spectra in both solution and solid states, cyclic voltammetry and GIWAXS for the solid-state films. Not only the modules processing but also their geometry has been investigated and the results reported in the third chapter. The electrode geometry printed by the screen printer was optimized to obtain better photovoltaic performance of OPV modules. In addition, a comparative study of the different screen-printed electrode materials has been carried out. The fabricated OPV modules showed PCE values of ca 1% under AM 1.5 conditions. The degradation of solution processed photovoltaic modules is still a dominant issue for the industrial requirement, and the topic of Chapter 6. Since the degradation of the modules is mainly correlated to the active layer components, we have investigated and compared as well the degradation of roll-to-roll modules based on fullerene and non-fullerene acceptors (P3HT: PCBM P3HT:o-IDTBR, respectively) heterojunctions to have more insights for improving the lifetime the OPV modules for the industrial scale application. Two types of encapsulation systems (PET only and barrier foil) were used to isolate the modules from the environmental conditions, minimizing diffusion of oxygen and humidity into OPV modules. Modules based on P3HT: PCBM and P3HT:o-IDTBR, encapsulated with barrier foil have shown activity up to 522 and 249 hours, respectively, while modules encapsulated with PET foil showed activity for 21 hours. In addition, not only the photoactive layer components were found to be responsible for the degradation process but also the HTL had a role in the resulting stability. En aquesta tesis, s'ha explorat el acoblament de generadors termoelèctrics (TEGs, per les seves sigles en anglès) a celes solars orgàniques (OSCs, per les seves sigles en anglès) en dispositius híbrids de estat sòlid per generació d'electricitat. En la primera part d'aquesta tesis s'ha demostrat la capacitat dels materials termoelèctrics (TE) orgànics per captar radiació solar i transformar-la en electricitat en un procés de dos passos. En un primer pas, la radiació solar es converteix en calor, motiu pel qual es van caracteritzar els materials TE com absorbent solars. Utilitzem la espectroscòpia Infraroja per la Transformada de Fourier (FTIR, per les seves sigles en anglès) per investigar les seves propietats òptiques i la termografia infraroja (IR) per investigar les seves propietats fototèrmiques. En un segon pas, el calor es converteix en electricitat mitjançant el efecte Seebeck. Típicament els materials TE s'investiguen en el context de la recuperació de calor residual, el qual ens va motivar a investigar els efectes secundaris associats a la llum en els paràmetres TE, es a dir, la conductivitat elèctrica i el coeficient Seebeck. A continuació, vam explorar els paràmetres geomètrics del dispositiu híbrid, tal com la longitud de la pota, i vam proposar diverses geometries planes pels generadors termoelèctrics solars orgànics (SOTEGs, per les seves sigles en anglès). El focus d'aquesta part eren els SOTEGs amb geometries planes, però vam comparar breument les geometries planes amb les verticals. Per últim, vam fabricar un dispositiu com a prova de concepte incorporant un mirall concentrador. En la segona part de la tesis, el focus es centra en investigar tres geometries de dispositiu diferents per acoblar un generador termoelèctric (TEG) a una OSC, recorrent a les dades experimentals obtingudes a partir dels espectres FTIR i de les imatges de termografia IR. Quan s'utilitza una cel·la solar semi-transparent en un dispositiu híbrid, el TEG pot fer us del calor generat i la llum transmesa per la cel·la solar. S'observa que la eficiència de conversió de potencia (PCE, per les seves sigles en anglès) de un mòdul comercial de OSC millora amb la temperatura. Motivats per la millora en la PCE observada en la segona part, vam investigar l'efecte de la temperatura en els paràmetres OSCs mitjançant les característiques J-V en funciço de la temperatura i de la intensitat de la llum. S'escull el sistema PBDB-T:ITIC per estudiar degut a la seva excel·lent estabilitat tèrmica. Un mètode d'alt rendiment, la tècnica del recobriment per fulla (Blade coating en anglès) s'utilitza per fabricar capes actives amb grosors variables. Per aquet sistema i uns altres tres, observem una millora amb la temperatura en la densitat de corrent de curtcircuit (JSC), el factor d'emplenat (FF, per les seves sigles en anglès) i la PCE. Combinant simulacions deriva-difusió (realitzades per un col·laborador) amb mesures de corrent limitada per carrega espacial (SCLS, en anglès) en funció de la temperatura, mesures d'eficiència externa quàntica en funció de la temperatura i tècniques de dispersió, concretament dispersió de rajos X de angle petit (GISAXS, per les seves sigles en anglès) i la dispersió de rajos X de angle ampli (GIWAXS, per les seves sigles en anglès), demostrem que la millora reversible en el rendiment del dispositiu es deu al transport de carregues per salt, que s'activa tèrmicament.

Direct piezoelectric force microscopy (DPFM) is employed to examine whether or not lead halide perovskites exhibit ferroelectricity. Compared to conventional piezoelectric force microscopy, DPFM is a novel technique capable of measuring piezoelectricity directly. This fact is fundamental to be able to examine the existence of ferroelectricity in lead halide perovskites, an issue that has been under debate for several years. DPFM is used to detect the current signals, i.e. changes in the charge distribution under the influence of the scan direction and applied force of the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip in contact mode. For comparison, (i) we use DPFM on lead halide perovskites and well-known ferroelectric materials (i.e. periodically poled lithium niobate and lead zirconate titanate); and (ii) we conduct parallel experiments on MAPbI3 films of different grain sizes, film thicknesses, substrates, and textures using DPFM as well as piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). In contrast to previous work that claimed there were ferroelectric domains in MAPbI3 perovskite films, our work shows that the studied perovskite films Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 and MAPbI3 are ferroelectricity-free. The observed current profiles of lead halide perovskites possibly originate from ion migration that happens under an applied electrical bias and in strained samples under mechanical stress. En l'actual era de la Internet de les Coses (de l'anglès, IOT), els dispositius de detecció intel·ligents estan canviant molt el món en què vivim, des de com percebem el nostre entorn fins a com gastem l'energia. Fonts d'energia per a aquests dispositius seran essencials, especialment si no requereixen manteniment, són flexibles, barates, altament processable o fins i tot d'un sol ús. Els materials termoelèctrics orgànics --- semiconductors que poden transformar la calor en electricitat --- poden complir aquestes característiques. No obstant això, en els materials d'última generació encara hi ha aspectes que necessiten ser millorats; com el rendiment termoelèctric, estimat mitjançant la figura de mèrit ZT i l'estabilitat termoelèctrica sota continu estrès tèrmic. Aquesta tesi informa sobre estratègies per millorar l'eficiència i estabilitat termoelèctriques. Com a sistema de referència fem servir PBTTT dopat amb l'acceptor molecular F4TCNQ. Com a eina transversal per als nostres estudis, desenvolupem mètodes de fabricació i caracterització d'alt rendiment basats en gradients de tractament tèrmic, dopat i gruix per estudiar i correlacionar la relació entre la microestructura, les propietats termoelèctriques i l'estabilitat en una gran quantitat de mostres. A la primera secció de resultats proposem una estratègia per millorar l'estabilitat termoelèctrica. Hem demostrat que la formació de complexos de càrrega (CTC per les seves sigles en anglès) generen mostres tèrmicament més resistents, encara que elèctricament menys conductores. Al desenvolupar un mètode per ajustar la relació de transferència de càrrega parcial a una transferència completa, podem millorar l'estabilitat a llarg termini sense sacrificar la conductivitat elèctrica. La segona secció de resultats aborda la relació entre la cristal·linitat, el transport tèrmic i el transport elèctric. Hem demostrat que el grau de cristal·linitat determina en gran mesura la conductivitat tèrmica de capa fina de polímer. Un cop dopem el material, fins i tot amb quantitats de dopant relativament petites augmenta la conductivitat elèctrica diversos ordres de magnitud, però es redueix la conductivitat tèrmica sense un deteriorament notable de la cristal·linitat. A la tercera part de resultats, ens enfoquem en una tècnica simple però efectiva per millorar simultàniament la conductivitat elèctrica i el coeficient de Seebeck. Utilitzant una matriu de PBTTT i afegint petites fraccions d'altres polímers, com RR-P3HT podem millorar l'ordre i la qualitat de la microestructura en la capa fina de polímer, així millorant les característiques de transport de càrrega. Encara que el nostre estudi se centra en una combinació particular de polímer i dopant, els nostres resultats amplien el coneixement actual de la relació entre la microestructura, transport termoelèctric i l'estabilitat. En la actual era de la Internet de las Cosas (del inglés, IoT), los dispositivos de detección inteligentes están cambiando mucho del mundo en el que vivimos, desde cómo percibimos nuestro entorno hasta cómo gastamos la energía. Fuentes de energía para tales dispositivos serán esenciales, especialmente si no requieren mantenimiento, son flexibles, baratas, altamente procesable o incluso desechables. Los materiales termoeléctricos orgánicos --- semiconductores que pueden transformar el calor en electricidad --- pueden cumplir estas características. Sin embargo, en los materiales de última generación todavía hay aspectos que necesitan ser mejorados; como el rendimiento termoeléctrico, estimado mediante la figura de mérito ZT y la estabilidad termoeléctrica bajo continuo estrés térmico. Esta tesis informa sobre estrategias para mejorar la eficiencia y estabilidad termoeléctricas. Como sistema de referencia empleamos PBTTT dopado con el aceptor molecular F4TCNQ. Como herramienta transversal para nuestros estudios, desarrollamos métodos de fabricación y caracterización de alto rendimiento basados en gradientes de tratamiento térmico, dopado y espesor para estudiar y correlacionar la relación entre la microestructura, las propiedades termoeléctricas y la estabilidad en una gran cantidad de muestras. En la primera sección de resultados proponemos una estrategia para mejorar la estabilidad termoeléctrica. Demostramos que la formación de complejos de carga (CTC) generan muestras térmicamente más resistentes, aunque menos eléctricamente menos conductora. Al desarrollar un método para ajustar la relación de transferencia de carga parcial a entera, podemos mejorar la estabilidad a largo plazo sin sacrificar la conductividad eléctrica. La segunda sección de resultados aborda la relación entre cristalinidad, transporte térmico y eléctrico. Demostramos que el grado de cristalinidad determina en gran medida la conductividad térmica de capa fina de polímero. Tras dopar, incluso un contenido de dopante relativamente pequeño aumenta la conductividad eléctrica en varios órdenes de magnitud, pero reduce la conductividad térmica sin un deterioro notable de la cristalinidad. En la tercera parte de resultados, nos enfocamos en una técnica simple pero efectiva para mejorar simultáneamente la conductividad eléctrica y el coeficiente de Seebeck. Al usar una matriz de PBTTT y agregar pequeñas fracciones de otros polímeros, como RR-P3HT podemos mejorar el orden y la calidad de la microestructura en la capa fina de polímero, así mejorando las características de transporte de carga. Aunque nuestro estudio se centra en una combinación particular de polímero y dopante, nuestros resultados amplían el conocimiento actual de la relación entre la microestructura, transporte termoeléctrico y la estabilidad. In the current Internet of Things (IoT) era, smart sensing-devices are changing much about the world we live in, from how we sense our surroundings to the way we spend energy. On-site power generators for such devices will be essential, especially if they are maintenance-free, flexible, cheap, printable, or even disposable. Organic thermoelectric materials --- semiconductors that can transform heat into electricity at near-room temperature --- can fulfill these characteristics. Nevertheless, there are still issues in the current state-of-the-art materials that need improvement, such as the thermoelectric performance, benchmarked by the dimensionless ZT, and the thermoelectric stability under continuous thermal stress. This thesis reports on strategies to improve thermoelectric efficiency and stability. As a testbed material system, we employ PBTTT doped with the molecular acceptor F4TCNQ. As a transversal tool for our studies, we developed high-throughput fabrication and characterization methods based on annealing-, doping- and thickness-gradients to study and correlate the relationship between microstructure, thermoelectric properties, and stability for many samples. The first set of results reports on a strategy to improve thermoelectric stability. We demonstrate that the formation of charge transfer complexes (CTCs) leads to more thermally enduring samples, although less electrically conductive. By developing a method to adjust the partial to integer charge-transfer ratio, we can improve the long-term stability without sacrificing the electrical conductivity. The subsequent chapter centers on the relationship between crystallinity and thermal and electric transport. We demonstrate that the degree of crystallinity largely determines the thermal conductivity of the film. Upon doping, even a relatively small dopant content increases the electrical conductivity several orders of magnitude but lowers the thermal conductivity without noticeable deterioration in the crystallinity. In the final chapter, we focus on a simple yet effective technique to simultaneously enhance the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. By using a matrix of PBTTT and adding small fractions of other polymers, such as RR-P3HT, we can enhance the order and microstructure quality of the film, improving the charge transport characteristics. While centered on a particular polymer and dopant combination, our results stretch the current knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure, thermal-electric transport, and stability. Les cel·les solars orgàniques són dispositius estratificats complexos que converteixen llum en electricitat. En ells, l'efecte fotovoltaic té lloc a la capa activa, la qual es troba formada per al menys dos materials semiconductors orgànics amb caràcter electrònic diferenciat: el donador o material transportador de buits, i l'acceptor o material transportador d'electrons, els quals apareixen barrejats formant una heterounió distribuïda en volum. Certs paràmetres d'aquests dispositius com la raó de la barreja donador-acceptor i el gruix de la capa activa s'han d'ajustar per maximitzar l'eficiència fotovoltaica. Aquest procés consumeix grans quantitats de temps i recursos atès que normalment es du a terme mitjançant la fabricació sistemàtica de desenes de dispositius individuals. En aquesta tesi desenvolupem mètodes experimentals d'alt rendiment que acceleren el cribratge de materials i l'optimització de cel·les solars orgàniques. La metodologia es basa en la realització de gradients laterals d'estat sòlid en els paràmetres d'interès, els quals estan dissenyats per a sobrepassar les limitacions dels mètodes tradicionals d'exploració a través de la combinació en una única mostra de les variacions paramètriques explorades per centenars de mostres obtingudes seguint els mètodes clàssics d'experimentació. El rendiment fotovoltaic es visualitza al llarg dels gradients i es correlaciona espacialment amb les variacions paramètriques, de manera que el cribratge es trasllada d'un escenari de fabricació intensiva, a un escenari de mesura intensiva, la qual cosa ofereix ritmes de cribratge de materials i optimització de dispositius significativament més elevats. En primer lloc, hem demostrat que l'ús de l'espectroscòpia Raman ens permet mapejar quantitativament el gruix i la raó donador-acceptor (composició) en els gradients, mentre que paral·lelament es fa servir la tècnica de mapeig de corrent induït per feix de llum per mesurar el fotocorrent de els dispositius funcionals que contenen aquests gradients. L'ús conjunt d'aquestes dues tècniques demostra ser un mètode de cribratge d'alta eficiència per optimitzar cel·les solars orgàniques de diferents tipus. D'una banda, estudiem heteroestructures en forma de bicapa formades per gradients de gruix disposats ortogonalment, en les quals fem servir espectroscòpia Raman i mesures de fotocorrent per identificar els gruixos de cada capa que resulten en una major eficiència fotovoltaica. Després, hem investigat dispositius d'heterounió en volum compostos de polímers donadors de baix salt de banda i acceptors derivats de l'ful·lerè. En ells, identifiquem el gruix de capa activa i la composició òptimes per a diverses mescles binàries d'acord amb l'estat de l'art actual de la tecnologia. Després, estenem el treball a acceptors nous no derivats de l'ful·lerè, incloent petites molècules i polímers de tipus n. En aquest últim cas i amb l'objectiu d'acomodar les característiques reològiques particulars de les tintes polimèriques, hem desenvolupat una tècnica de deposició innovadora basada en dispensadors microfluídics i recobriment per fulla. A continuació, estenem de manera efectiva el mètode de cribratge combinatorial d'alt rendiment a mescles orgàniques fotovoltaiques ternàries disposades com heterounions en volum. Finalment, hem realitzat un estudi sistemàtic de cribratge combinatorial de mescles binàries de polímer-petita molècula, del qual hem utilitzat els resultats per a l'entrenament d'algoritmes d'intel·ligència artificial. Aquests són capaços de confeccionar models predictius per a l'espai de fotocorrent que poden accelerar més la optimització de dispositius i l'alt ritme de cribratge de materials ja de per si habilitat pel desenvolupament de mètodes combinatorials aplicats a la fotovoltaica orgànica. Las celdas solares orgánicas son dispositivos estratificados complejos que convierten luz en electricidad. En ellos, el efecto fotovoltaico tiene lugar en la capa activa, la cual se encuentra formada por al menos dos materiales semiconductores orgánicos con carácter electrónico diferenciado: el dador o material transportador de huecos, y el aceptor o material transportador de electrones, los cuales aparecen mezclados formando una heterounión distribuida en volumen. Ciertos parámetros de estos dispositivos como la razón de mezclado dador:aceptor y el espesor de la capa activa deben ajustarse para maximizar la eficiencia fotovoltaica. Este proceso consume grandes cantidades de tiempo y recursos dado que normalmente se lleva a cabo mediante la fabricación sistemática de decenas de dispositivos individuales. En esta tesis desarrollamos métodos experimentales de alto rendimiento que aceleran el cribado de materiales y la optimización de celdas solares orgánicas. La metodología se basa en la realización de gradientes laterales de estado sólido en los parámetros de interés, los cuales están diseñados para sobrepasar las limitaciones de los métodos tradicionales de exploración a través de la combinación en una única muestra de las variaciones parámetricas exploradas por cientos de muestras obtenidas siguiendo los métodos clásicos de experimentación. El rendimiento fotovoltaico se visualiza a lo largo de los gradientes y se correlaciona espacialmente con las variaciones parámetricas, de forma que el cribado se traslada de un escenario intensivo en cuanto a fabricación, a un escenario intensivo en cuanto a medición, lo cual ofrece ritmos de cribado de materiales y optimización de dispositivos significativamente más elevados. En primer lugar, demostramos el uso de la espectroscopía Raman para mapear cuantitativamente el espesor y la razón dador:aceptor (composición) en los gradientes, mientras que paralelamente se emplea la técnica de mapeo de corriente inducida por haz de luz para medir la fotocorriente de los dispositivos funcionales que contienen dichos gradientes. El uso conjunto de estas dos técnicas demuestra ser un método de cribado altamente eficiente para optimizar celdas solares orgánicas de distintos tipos. Por un lado, estudiamos heteroestructuras en forma de bicapa formadas por gradientes de espesor dispuestos ortogonalmente, en las cuales usamos espectroscopía Raman y medidas de fotocorriente para identificar los espesores de cada capa que resultan en una mayor eficiencia fotovoltaica. Luego, investigamos dispositivos de heterounión en volumen compuestos de polímeros dadores de bajo salto de banda y aceptores derivados del fulereno. En ellos, identificamos el espesor de capa activa y la composición óptimas para diversas mezclas binarias acordes con el estado del arte actual de la tecnología. Después, extendemos el trabajo a aceptores novedosos no derivados del fulereno, incluyendo pequeñas moléculas y polímeros de tipo n. En este último caso y con el objetivo de acomodar las características reológicas particulares de las tintas poliméricas, desarrollamos una técnica de deposición novedosa basada en dispensadores microfluídicos y recubrimiento por cuchilla. A continuación, extendemos de forma efectiva el método de cribado combinatorial de alto rendimiento a mezclas orgánicas fotovoltaicas ternarias dispuestas como heterouniones en volumen. Por último, realizamos un estudio sistemático de cribado combinatorial de mezclas binarias de polímero:pequeña molécula, cuyos resultados son empleados en el entrenamiento de algoritmos de inteligencia artificial. Éstos son capaces de confeccionar modelos predictivos para el espacio de fotocorriente que pueden acelerar más si cabe la optimización de dispositivos y el alto ritmo de cribado de materiales ya de por sí habilitado por el desarrollo de métodos combinatoriales aplicados a la fotovoltaica orgánica. Organic solar cells are complex stratified devices that convert light into electricity. Therein, the photovoltaic effect takes place in the active layer, which is formed by at least two organic semiconducting materials with dissimilar electronic character: the donor or hole transporting material, and the acceptor or electron transporting material, which appear mixed forming a bulk heterojunction. Device parameters such as the donor:acceptor mixing ratio and the active layer thickness must be tailored to maximize the photovoltaic efficiency, a time- and resources-consuming process usually performed through the systematic fabrication of tens of discrete devices. In this thesis we develop high-throughput experimental approaches to accelerate the screening of materials and the optimization of organic solar cells. The methodology is based on the realization of lateral solid-state gradients on the parameters of interest, which are thought to circumvent the limitations of traditional sampling approaches by combining in a single sample the parametric variations explored by hundreds of them in discrete sampling experimentation. The photovoltaic performance is imaged throughout the gradients and spatially correlated with their parametric variations, thus moving from fabrication- to measuring-intensive screening scenarios that offer significantly higher materials screening and device optimization rates. First, we demonstrate the use of Raman spectroscopy imaging to map quantitatively the thickness and mixing ratio variations of the gradients, while light-beam induced current (LBIC) mapping is exploited to measure the photocurrent in functional devices containing the aforementioned gradients. Their joint use is demonstrated in this work to be a truly efficient screening approach to optimize organic solar cells of distinct types. On the one hand, we study bilayer heterostructures formed by orthogonal thickness gradients and use Raman spectroscopy and LBIC to identify the thickness of each layer that results in the highest photovoltaic performance. Then, we investigate bulk heterojunction devices made of low band gap donor polymers and fullerene acceptors and identify the optimal active layer thickness and mixing ratio of several state-of-the-art donor:acceptor binaries. Afterwards, the work is extended to novel non-fullerene acceptors including small molecules and n-type polymers. For this latter case and in order to accommodate the particular rheology of polymeric inks, a novel deposition technique based on microfluidic dispensers and blade coating is introduced. Next, bulk heterojunctions of ternary organic photovoltaic blends are effectively screened following high-throughput combinatorial methods. Finally, we perform systematic combinatorial material screening studies on polymer:small molecule binary blends to feed artificial intelligence algorithms. As a result, these are able to retrieve predictive models for the photocurrent space that might accelerate even further the device optimization and materials screening rate already enabled by the development of combinatorial methods in organic photovoltaics. En els últims anys, la tecnologia fotovoltaica orgànica (OPV, per les seves sigles en anglès) ha despertat l’atenció de tant la comunitat científica com la industrial, a causa de les seves altes eficiències de conversió energètica, que continuen creixent avui dia, superant actualment el 18%. Aquestes eficiències, en part, s’han aconseguit gràcies a el gran desenvolupament de les petites molècules acceptors, també conegudes com acceptors no basats en ful·lerè (NFA, per les seves sigles en anglès). A més de l’eficiència, la OPV basada en NFA ofereix gran flexibilitat per a modificar el color i l’estabilitat a llarg termini. Aquestes propietats úniques fan de la fotovoltaica orgànica una tecnologia molt prometedora per a la seva intensiva comercialització, ja sigui com a tecnologia integrada en edificis (BIPV, per les seves sigles en anglès) o com a font d’alimentació per a sensors en l’anomenat Internet de les Coses. Aquesta tesi aborda algunes de les qüestions crítiques de la fotovoltaica orgànica que han de ser avaluades perquè aquesta es converteixi en una tecnologia comercialment atractiva. En primer lloc, hem estudiat teòricament les estratègies per controlar l’estètica de les capes fines actives, que absorbeixen la llum. Amb l’ajuda d’un model òptic i un algoritme genètic, hem predit les característiques (composició i gruix) que les barreges de materials han de tenir per a que la capa mostri un color prèviament seleccionat. L’ús de capes basades en NFA ha resultat ser l’estratègia més eficaç per a modificar el color de la capa activa. Com a resultat, els dispositius amb NFA han estat estudiats intensament al llarg d’aquesta tesi. A més, com a pas intermedi cap a l’escalat industrial, la tècnica de deposició assistida amb fulla (blade-coating en anglès) s’ha utilitzat en la majoria dels casos per a la fabricació de cel·les solars en aquesta tesi. A causa de la flexibilitat sintètica dels NFA, hi ha una gran varietat de noves molècules que val la pena estudiar. Es mostren dos exemples de cribratge combinatori utilitzant tècniques d’alt rendiment. En primer lloc, s’apliquen gradients 1D a dispositius basats en NFA i politiofè (P3HT), per ser un dels polímers més barats i més estudiats. Els gradients 1D han permès la fabricació de més de 1.000 dispositius amb variacions controlades de gruix o temperatura post-recuit en les capes fotoactives. Per al sistema més eficient, estudiem i classifiquem la sensibilitat als paràmetres de fabricació. En segon lloc, hem estès els gradients 1D a 2D i hem explorat els polímers més eficients amb NFA. S’ha desenvolupat un mètode simple basat en variacions controlades i simultànies dels paràmetres d’interès. Amb l’ajuda de tècniques de caracterització optoelectròniques i co-locals, aquest mètode permet una ràpida identificació dels valors òptims de gruix i composició de la mescla a través de mapes 2D d’optimització. També s’ha estudiat l’estabilitat a llarg termini del sistema més eficient per ser un factor crític per l’escalat industrial. De la mateixa manera, s’han fabricat mòduls amb tècniques d’impressió industrialment rellevants com la impressió rotativa. La potencial semitransparencia de la OPV s’ha demostrat fabricant mòduls amb un NFA que estén la seva absorció òptica fins a la regió de l’infraroig proper. Per tal de desenvolupar un procés de fabricació sostenible i escalable i industrialment rellevant, els mòduls s’han fabricat seguint les directrius de la indústria de la impressió, incloent l’ús de dissolvents no halogenats, la fabricació en atmosfera normal i tècniques de baix consum energètic. En resum, en aquesta tesi, proporcionem nous coneixements sobre l’escalat de la tecnologia fotovoltaica orgànica, basats en NFA i que aplanen el camí cap a una transferència eficient dels dispositius de l’escala del laboratori a una escala industrialment rellevant. Además de la eficiencia, la OPV basada en NFAs ofrece gran flexibilidad para modificar el color y presenta buena estabilidad a largo plazo. Estas propiedades hacen de la fotovoltaica orgánica una tecnología muy prometedora para su intensiva comercialización, bien integrada en edificios (BIPV, por sus siglas en inglés) o como fuente de alimentación para sensores en el llamado Internet de las Cosas (IoT, por sus siglas en inglés). Esta tesis aborda algunas de las cuestiones críticas de la fotovoltaica orgánica que deben ser evaluadas para que ésta se convierta en una tecnología comercialmente atractiva. En primer lugar, estudiamos teóricamente las estrategias para controlar la estética de las capas finas absorbentes. Con la ayuda de un modelo óptico y un algoritmo genético, predecimos las características (composición y espesor) que las mezclas de materiales deben tener para que la capa muestre un color previamente elegido. El uso de capas basadas en NFAs resultó ser la estrategia más eficaz para modificar el color de la capa activa. Como resultado, los dispositivos basados en NFAs fueron estudiados en profundidad a lo largo de esta tesis. Además, como paso intermedio hacia el escalado industrial, la técnica de racleta (blade-coating en inglés) se empleó en la mayoría de los casos para la fabricación de celdas solares. Debido a la flexibilidad sintética de los NFAs, hay una gran variedad de nuevas moléculas que merece la pena estudiar. Se muestran dos ejemplos de cribado combinatorio utilizando técnicas de alto rendimiento. En primer lugar, se aplican gradientes 1D a dispositivos basados en NFAs y politiofeno (P3HT, por sus siglas en inglés), por ser uno de los polímeros más baratos y más estudiados. Los gradientes 1D han permitido la fabricación de más de 1.000 dispositivos con variaciones controladas de espesor o temperatura post-recocido en las capas fotoactivas. Para el sistema más eficiente, estudiamos y clasificamos la sensibilidad a los parámetros de fabricación. En segundo lugar, extendimos los gradientes 1D a 2D y exploramos los polímeros más eficientes con NFAs. Se desarrolló un método simple basado en variaciones controladas y simultáneas de los parámetros de interés. Con la ayuda de técnicas de caracterización optoelectrónicas y co-locales, dicho método permite una rápida identificación de los valores óptimos de espesor y composición de la mezcla a través de los mapas 2D de optimización. También se estudió la estabilidad a largo plazo del sistema más eficiente por ser un factor crítico para su escalado industrial. De igual forma, se fabricaron módulos con técnicas de impresión industrialmente relevantes como la impresión rotativa (roll-to-roll, en inglés). La potencial semitransparencia del OPV se demostró fabricando módulos con un NFA que extiende su absorción óptica hasta la región del infrarrojo cercano. Con el fin de desarrollar un proceso de fabricación sostenible y escalable e industrialmente relevante, los módulos se fabricaron siguiendo las directrices de la industria de la impresión, incluyendo el uso de disolventes no halogenados, la fabricación en atmósfera normal y técnicas de bajo consumo energético. En resumen, en esta tesis proporcionamos nuevos conocimientos sobre el escalado de la tecnología fotovoltaica orgánica, basados en NFAs y que allanan el camino hacia una transferencia eficiente de los dispositivos de la escala laboratorio a una escala industrialmente relevante. Over the last years, organic photovoltaic technology (OPV) has drawn the attention of both the scientific and industrial communities due to their increasing performances, currently over 18%. These high efficiencies have been achieved thanks to the chemical development of the small molecular acceptors, also known as non-fullerene acceptors (NFA). Besides the efficiency, NFA-based OPV offers colour and transparency tuneable properties, low embodied energy, and good long-term stability. These unique properties make OPV a suitable technology for their commercialisation as a part of building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) or for powering the so-called Internet of Things (IoT). This thesis covers some of the critical issues that need to be addressed for OPV to become a truly competitive technology. Firstly, we studied theoretically the strategies for tuning the colour appearance of OPV films. With the aid of an optical model and a genetic algorithm, we predicted the characteristics that photoactive materials should have in order to exhibit a desired colour. The use of non-fullerene acceptors (NFA) for the photoactive blends turned out to be the most effective colour-tuning strategy. As a result, NFAs-based devices were intensively studied in this thesis. Moreover, as an intermediate step towards a large printing scale, the doctor blade technique was employed for most of this thesis work. Due to their synthetic flexibility, there are many NFAs and their processing conditions that are worth studying. Two examples of combinatorial screening using high throughput techniques are given. First, 1D gradients are applied to devices based on NFAs and polythiophene (P3HT), one of the cheapest and most studied polymers. 1D gradients enabled the fabrication of more than 1000 blade-coated devices with controlled variations in thickness or post-annealing temperature at the photoactive layers. For the most efficient system, we studied and ranked the sensitivity of the different manufacturing parameters. Second, we extended this to 2D gradients and explored both low bandgap polymers and NFAs. A simple method was developed based on controlled and simultaneous variations of the parameters of interest. With the aid of co-local optoelectronic characterisation techniques, 2D optimisation maps enable fast identification of the optimum thickness and blend composition values. Long term stability was also studied on selected devices, as a relevant factor for OPV upscaling, together with manufacturing fully roll-to-roll modules. Transparency is another relevant characteristic feature that could enable OPV integration into the potential photoactive windows of the future. Semitransparent laser-patterned modules were fabricated with a NFA that contributes to extend the blend optical absorption up to the near-infrared region. With the aim of developing a sustainable manufacturing process, modules were manufactured following preferences of large-scale printing industry including non-halogenated solvents, air processing and low energy consumption. In summary, in this thesis we provide new insights into the upscaling of NFAs based OPV that pave the way towards an efficient transfer from record lab-devices to fully solution-processed modules. Combining non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with novel low band gap polymers has led to very promising performances. However, research on donors that can reduce the performance–cost gap, such as poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), can play an instrumental role in the upscaling of this technology. In this paper, we have analysed the influence of several processing parameters on the performance of solar cells based on P3HT:NFA binaries deposited by blade coating. The investigated NFAs include molecules with variations in the side chains and end-capping groups. More precisely, we have looked at devices based on P3HT blended with five NFAs, namely ITIC, ITIC-M, O-IDTBR, EH-IDTBR, and O-IDFBR, and employed PC60BM and ICBA as reference acceptors. More than one thousand doctor-bladed P3HT:NFA samples were manufactured using high throughput techniques using gradients of both thickness and annealing temperature. The combined data for all samples were employed to perform a parameter sensitivity study in order to identify the most influential parameters for P3HT based devices. For all material combinations, we have found that blade coated solar cells fabricated from chlorobenzene/dichlorobenzene mixtures outperform those based on chlorobenzene. For the most promising binary (i.e. P3HT:O-IDTBR), we have investigated in more depth the effects resulting from the choice of solvent, as well as casting temperature and post-deposition thermal annealing. Devices with power conversion efficiencies greater than 5% were obtained regardless of the casting temperature and for a relatively wide thickness range (80–250 nm). Finally, we have shown that encapsulated devices exhibit a stable performance for more than 3000 h and that degradation progresses faster in thicker devices. While multi-junction geometries have the potential to boost the efficiency of organic solar cells, the experimental gains yet obtained are still very modest. This work proposes an alternative spectral splitting device concept in which various individual semiconducting junctions with cascading band gaps are laid side by side, thus the name RAINBOW. Each lateral sub-cell receives a fraction of the spectrum that closely matches the main absorption band of the given semiconductor. Here, simulations are used to identify the important material and device properties of each RAINBOW sub-cell. Using the resulting design rules, three systems are selected, namely PBDB-T-2F:IO-4Cl, PBDB-T-2F:Y6 and PTB7-Th:COTIC-4F, and their potential as sub-cells in this geometry is experimentally investigated. With the aid of a custom built setup that generates spectrally spread sunlight on demand, the simulations are experimentally validated, showing that this geometry can lead to a reduction in thermalization losses and an improvement in light harvesting, which results in a relative improvement in efficiency of 46.6% with respect to the best sub-cell. Finally, a working proof of concept monolithic device consisting of two sub-cells deposited from solution on the same substrate is fabricated, thus demonstrating the feasibility and the potential of the RAINBOW solar cell concept. Understanding the complex crystallization process of semiconducting polymers is key for the advance of organic electronic technologies as the optoelectronic properties of these materials are intimately connected to their solid-state microstructure. These polymers often have semirigid backbones and flexible side chains, which results in a strong tendency to organize/order in the liquid state. Therefore, crystallization of these materials frequently occurs from liquid states that exhibit-at least partial-molecular order. However, the impact of the preexisting molecular order on the crystallization process of semiconducting polymers- indeed, of any polymer-remained hitherto unknown. This study uses fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) to probe the crystallization kinetics of poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl (PFO) from both an isotropic disordered melt state (ISO state) and a liquid-crystalline ordered state (NEM state). Our results demonstrate that the preexisting molecular order has a profound impact on the crystallization of PFO. More specifically, it favors the formation of effective crystal nucleation centers, speeding up the crystallization kinetics at the early stages of phase transformation. However, samples crystallized from the NEM state require longer times to reach full crystallization (during the secondary crystallization stage) compared to those crystallized from the ISO state, likely suggesting that the preexisting molecular order slows down the advance in the latest stages of the crystallization, that is, those governed by molecular diffusion. The fitting of the data with the Avrami model reveals different crystallization mechanisms, which ultimately result in a distinct semicrystalline morphology and photoluminescence properties. Therefore, this work highlights the importance of understanding the interrelationships between processing, structure, and properties of polymer semiconductors and opens the door for performing fundamental investigations via newly developed FSC methodologies of such materials that otherwise are not possible with conventional techniques., We acknowledge the support of the Basque Government through grant IT1503-22.J.M. En aquesta tesis, s’ha explorat el acoblament de generadors termoelèctrics (TEGs, per les seves sigles en anglès) a celes solars orgàniques (OSCs, per les seves sigles en anglès) en dispositius híbrids de estat sòlid per generació d’electricitat. En la primera part d’aquesta tesis s’ha demostrat la capacitat dels materials termoelèctrics (TE) orgànics per captar radiació solar i transformar-la en electricitat en un procés de dos passos. En un primer pas, la radiació solar es converteix en calor, motiu pel qual es van caracteritzar els materials TE com absorbent solars. Utilitzem la espectroscòpia Infraroja per la Transformada de Fourier (FTIR, per les seves sigles en anglès) per investigar les seves propietats òptiques i la termografia infraroja (IR) per investigar les seves propietats fototèrmiques. En un segon pas, el calor es converteix en electricitat mitjançant el efecte Seebeck. Típicament els materials TE s’investiguen en el context de la recuperació de calor residual, el qual ens va motivar a investigar els efectes secundaris associats a la llum en els paràmetres TE, es a dir, la conductivitat elèctrica i el coeficient Seebeck. A continuació, vam explorar els paràmetres geomètrics del dispositiu híbrid, tal com la longitud de la pota, i vam proposar diverses geometries planes pels generadors termoelèctrics solars orgànics (SOTEGs, per les seves sigles en anglès). El focus d’aquesta part eren els SOTEGs amb geometries planes, però vam comparar breument les geometries planes amb les verticals. Per últim, vam fabricar un dispositiu com a prova de concepte incorporant un mirall concentrador. En la segona part de la tesis, el focus es centra en investigar tres geometries de dispositiu diferents per acoblar un generador termoelèctric (TEG) a una OSC, recorrent a les dades experimentals obtingudes a partir dels espectres FTIR i de les imatges de termografia IR. Quan s’utilitza una cel·la solar semi-transparent en un dispositiu híbrid, el TEG pot fer us del calor generat i la llum transmesa per la cel·la solar. S’observa que la eficiència de conversió de potencia (PCE, per les seves sigles en anglès) de un mòdul comercial de OSC millora amb la temperatura. Motivats per la millora en la PCE observada en la segona part, vam investigar l’efecte de la temperatura en els paràmetres OSCs mitjançant les característiques J-V en funciço de la temperatura i de la intensitat de la llum. S’escull el sistema PBDB-T:ITIC per estudiar degut a la seva excel·lent estabilitat tèrmica. Un mètode d’alt rendiment, la tècnica del recobriment per fulla (Blade coating en anglès) s’utilitza per fabricar capes actives amb grosors variables. Per aquet sistema i uns altres tres, observem una millora amb la temperatura en la densitat de corrent de curtcircuit (JSC), el factor d’emplenat (FF, per les seves sigles en anglès) i la PCE. Combinant simulacions deriva-difusió (realitzades per un col·laborador) amb mesures de corrent limitada per carrega espacial (SCLS, en anglès) en funció de la temperatura, mesures d’eficiència externa quàntica en funció de la temperatura i tècniques de dispersió, concretament dispersió de rajos X de angle petit (GISAXS, per les seves sigles en anglès) i la dispersió de rajos X de angle ampli (GIWAXS, per les seves sigles en anglès), demostrem que la millora reversible en el rendiment del dispositiu es deu al transport de carregues per salt, que s’activa tèrmicament. Actualment, un dels reptes en l’àmbit de la manipulació de la llum a la nanoescala és la transició del laboratori a aplicacions reals. Tot i el gran potencial demostrat per algunes estructures fotòniques per a incrementar la eficiència de instruments optoelectrònics, la seva implementació de d’aquestes a dispositius de mercat sovint es obstruïda per la necessitat d’usar tècniques de fabricació poc escalables i d’alt cost. Aquesta tesis està dedicada al disseny i implementació de estratègies de manipulació de la llum per a millorar la eficiència en la recol·lecció d’energia de plaques solars i fotodetectors, així com la millora de la emissió en dispositius d’il·luminació, mitjançant mètodes de nanoestructuració escalables com la nano-litografia suau. Aquesta tècnica té la capacitat de produir patrons i estructures amb una resolució de pocs nanòmetres amb gran fidelitat en àrees grans. A més a més, és compatible amb el processament a gran escala mitjançant el sistema de impressió en cadena “roll to roll” (carret-a-carret). També es tracta d’una tecnologia molt versàtil, ja que permet l’ús de diferents tipus de substrats, és poc invasiva i generalment pot ser introduïda en el esquema de fabricació sense haver de modificar cap pas. Amb l’ajuda d’aquesta tècnica de nanofabricació, explorem una varietat de arquitectures fotòniques i les diferents ressonàncies fotòniques que les fan especials. Entre aquestes darreres podem trobar ressonàncies de Mie, modes de Brewster i modes de cristall fotònic, que proveiran al sistema amb una major interacció llum-matèria a la capa activa del dispositiu, podent-ne millorar les seves capacitats òptiques. Primer, hem desenvolupat una estratègia per aconseguir una absorció optima de banda ample en semiconductors ultra-fins, amb menys de 100 nm de gruix, per a totes les energies per sobre de la seva energia de banda prohibida. La sinèrgia de les fortes ressonàncies d’interferència de capes fines presents i els modes del cristall fotònic de l’estructura (amb un alt índex de refracció) fan que l’estructura assoleixi fins a un 81% d’absorció en una ampli rang de longituds d’ona (de 400 a 1500 nm). En segon lloc, hem combinat la litografia suau amb la deposició química de vapor (CVD en anglès) per obtenir una matriu de semiesferes de silici sobre de una guia d’ones d’alt índex de refracció. Hem estudiat les ressonàncies de Mie característiques del substrat, com hibriden amb modes quasi-guiats de la guia d’ones i com això afecta al camp proper de la metasuperfície. Hem anat un pas més enllà estudiant la com la modificació dels paràmetres de disseny de l’estructura afecta les ressonàncies esmentades. Finalment, n’hem demostrat una possible aplicació com a substrat per a incrementar la emissió de llum per part de una molècula emissora. En la tercera part de la tesi, ens hem enfocat en la implementació de estructures de cristall fotònic bidimensional a tres dispositius diferents per a la millora de la seva eficiència. En particular, millorem la eficiència en la recol·lecció de fotons d’infraroig proper en cèl·lules solars de punts quàntics col·loïdals (PbS) i en fotodetectors orgànics (P3HT: PC60BM i PBTTT: PC70BM), i millorem l’emissió de llum de capes de nanofòsfors (nanocristalls de GdVO4:Eu3+). Hem desenvolupat sistemes fotònics adaptats a cada cas i hem fet una caracterització òptica i electrònica de tots els dispositius. La nanoestructuració en forma de cristall fotònic bidimensional proveeix a les capes actives amb propietats de guies d’ona ressonants, millorant les seves propietats de confinament de la llum en les longituds d’ona desitjades, demostrant així la possibilitat d’implementar les arquitectures. A pesar del gran potencial demostrado por algunas estructuras fotónicas para incrementar la eficiencia de instrumentos optoelectrónicos, su implementación en dispositivos de mercado muchas veces es obstruida por la necesidad de utilizar técnicas de fabricación poco escalables y de alto coste. Esta tesis está dedicada al diseño e implementación de estrategias de manipulación de la luz para mejorar la eficiencia en la recolección de energía de placas solares y fotodetectores, así como la mejora de la emisión en dispositivos de iluminación, mediante métodos de nanoestructuración escalables como la nano-litografía suave. Esta técnica tiene la capacidad de producir patrones y estructures con una resolución de pocos nanómetros con gran fidelidad en áreas grandes. Encima, es compatible con el procesamiento a gran escala mediante el sistema de impresión en cadena “roll-to-roll” (carrete-a-carrete). También se trata de una tecnología muy versátil, puesto que permite el uso de diferentes tipos de sustratos, es poco invasiva y generalmente puede ser introducida en el esquema de fabricación sin tener que modificar ningún paso. Con la ayuda de esta técnica de nanofabricación, exploramos una variedad de arquitecturas fotónicas y las diferentes resonancias fotónicas que las hacen especiales. Entre estas últimas podemos encontrar resonancias de Mie, modos de Brewster y modos de cristal fotónico, que proveerán al sistema con una mayor interacción luz-materia a la capa activa del dispositivo, mejorar sus capacidades ópticas. Primero, hemos desarrollado una estrategia para conseguir una absorción óptima de banda ancha en semiconductores ultra-finos, con menos de 100 nm de grosor, para todas las energías por encima de su energía de banda prohibida. La sinergia de las fuertes resonancias de interferencia de capas finas presentes y los modos del cristal fotónico de la estructura (con un alto índice de refracción) hacen que la estructura logre hasta un 81% de absorción en un amplio rango de longitudes de omda (de 400 a 1500 nm). En segundo lugar, hemos combinado la litografía suave con la deposición química de vapor (CVD en inglés) para obtener una matriz de semiesferas de silicio sobre de una guía de ondas de alto índice de refracción. Hemos estudiado las resonancias de Mie características del sustrato, como hibridan con modos casi-guiados de la guía de olas y como esto afecta en el campo próximo de la metasuperfície. Hemos ido un paso más allá estudiando como la modificación de los parámetros del diseño de la estructura afecta a las resonancias mencionadas. Finalmente, hemos demostrado una posible aplicación como sustrato para incrementar la emisión de luz por parte de una molécula emisora. En la tercera parte de la tesis, nos hemos enfocado en la implementación de estructuras de cristal fotónico bidimensional a tres dispositivos diferentes para la mejora de su eficiencia. En particular, mejoramos la eficiencia en la recolección de fotones de infrarrojo próximo en células solares de puntos cuánticos coloidales (PbS) y en fotodetectores orgánicos (P3HT: PC60BM y PBTTT: PC70BM), y mejoramos la emisión de luz de capas de nanofósforos (nanocristales de GdVO4:Eu3+). Hemos desarrollado sistemas fotónicos adaptados a cada caso y hemos hecho una caracterización óptica y electrónica de todos los dispositivos. La nanoestructuración en forma de cristal fotónico bidimensional provee a las capas activas con propiedades de guías de onda resonantes, mejorando sus propiedades de confinamiento de la luz en las longitudes de onda deseadas, demostrando así la posibilidad de implementar las arquitecturas. Currently, one of the main challenges in light management at the nanoscale is the transition from the laboratory to real applications. Despite the great potential shown by photonic architectures to optically improve the performance of many devices, transitioning into marketable devices is often hampered by the low-throughput and expensive nanofabrication techniques involved. This thesis is devoted to the design and development of subwavelength light managing strategies to improve the light harvesting or out-coupling in solar cells, photodetectors and light emitters while using a scalable nanostructuration such as soft nanoimprint lithography (NIL). This technique has been proven to achieve resolutions down to few tens of nanometers with high fidelity in large areas, being compatible with roll to roll processing. It is also versatile regarding the materials where it can be used, non-invasive, and can be seamlessly introduced in the devices fabrication scheme. With the aid of this technique, we explore a variety of photonic architectures and the different types of resonances sustained, from Brewster modes to Mie resonances, in order to enhance the light-matter interaction with the active layer of the device. First, we develop a strategy to achieve broadband optimal absorption in ultra-thin semiconductor materials (less than 100 nm thick) for all energies above their bandgap. The interplay of strong interference thin film resonances and photonic crystal modes sustained by a high refractive index nanostructure on a gold film renders the system with a 81% total absorption over a broad spectral range (from 400 to 1500 nm). Second, we combine soft NIL and chemical vapor deposition to obtain an array of silicon hemispheres on top of a high refractive index dielectric waveguide. We study the Mie resonances supported by the substrate, how these hybridize with the guided modes of the waveguide and how their interaction influences the electromagnetic near field of the metasurface. We further explore the tunability of such resonances with the design parameters of the structure and we demonstrate a potential application of it as a substrate for enhanced photoluminescence. In the third part of the thesis, we focus on the implementation of 2D photonic structures within the active layer of three different devices to improve performance. In particular we enhance the near infrared (NIR) photon harvesting efficiency in a colloidal quantum dot solar cell (PbS-CQD) and in organic photodetectors (P3HT: PC60BM and PBTTT: PC70BM) and improve the light out coupling from a nanophosphor layer (GdVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals). We developed photonic systems tailored for each device and provide the complete optical and electronic characterization for each case. The nanostructuration with a 2D periodic arrangement renders the active layers with resonant waveguide properties enhancing its light trapping properties in the targeted spectral ranges, hence demonstrating the possibility to implement photonic schemes within actual devices. Les perovskita orgàniques/inorgàniques híbrides han atret molta atenció des que es van introduir per primera vegada en un dispositiu fotovoltaic fa deu anys, obtenint una eficiència de el 3%. Des de llavors, l’eficiència de les cel·les solars de perovskita ha augmentat fins a gairebé igualar l’eficiència de les cel·les fotovoltaiques comercials de silici. A més, permet la fabricació de dispositius flexibles a un preu reduït. A causa de les seves propietats optoelectròniques excepcionalment bones, també s’està duent a terme una intensa recerca per trobar diferents aplicacions d’aquest tipus de materials, ja sigui com a sensors, làsers o díodes emissors de llum. No obstant això, encara s’han d’abordar alguns problemes que presenten, com la inestabilitat química o estructural en condicions ambientals. Per tal de comprendre millor l’estabilitat estructural i el paper exercit per la interacció entre el catió orgànic i la xarxa inorgànica, estudiem les propietats estructurals i optoelectròniques de les perovskita de la família FAxMA1-xPbI3 a diferents pressions (fins a 15 GPa) i temperatures (de 10 a 385 K). La nostra investigació d’aquest material és realitzada per mitjà d’espectroscòpia òptica no invasiva, com fotoluminiscència (PL), Raman i elipsometría. En els articles aquí recopilats es mostra el primer diagrama de fase complet de perovskita de iodur de plom de cations mixtes (formamidinio i metilamonio), en funció de la temperatura i la composició. Aquest diagrama pot servir per avaluar la concentració relativa òptima dels cations orgànics per estabilitzar la fase cúbica pel que fa als canvis de temperatura. Aquests materials també presenten una dependència atípica del bandgap amb temperatura, que en la literatura s’atribueix exclusivament a la renormalització del gap causa de la interacció electró-fonó. No obstant això, és aquest treball mostrem que els efectes d’expansió tèrmica també juguen un paper decisiu en la dependència del gap amb temperatura. De totes les combinacions de la família de perovskita d’halur organometàl·lic, MAPbI3 és probablement el més estudiat a causa de les seves excel·lents propietats. Se sap que la interacció entre el moviment dels cations orgànics i la gàbia inorgànica rígida té un paper decisiu en l’estructura cristal·lina d’aquest material. Per exemple, a causa de el desordre dinàmic de les molècules de metilamonio, la perovskita MAPbI3 adopta una fase cúbica altament simètrica a altes temperatures. Quan es refreda, tant la contracció de la xarxa com la reducció de la simetria a causa d’una transició a una fase ortorrómbica bloquegen les molècules de MA en els buits de la xarxa inorgànica. En els articles aquí compilats observem per primera vegada un efecte similar però a temperatura ambient, aplicant pressió hidrostàtica a el material. En ambdós casos, el bloqueig dels cations de MA es pot observar indirectament a través d’una reducció dràstica dels amples de línia de fonons en els mesuraments Raman. Demostrant, d’aquesta manera, que és possible alterar les propietats vibratòries del material aplicant una pressió controlada. Finalment, la modificació del valor del bandgap i la variació de l’estructura de bandes de sistema mixt FAxMA1-xPbI3 s’avalua en funció de la composició de FA amb elipsometría i fotoluminiscència. Las perovskitas orgánicas/inorgánicas híbridas han atraído mucha atención desde que se introdujeron por primera vez en un dispositivo fotovoltaico hace diez años, obteniendo una eficiencia de alrededor del 3%. Debido a sus propiedades optoelectrónicas excepcionalmente buenas, también se está llevando a cabo una intensa investigación para encontrar diferentes aplicaciones de este tipo de materiales, ya sea como sensores, láseres o diodos emisores de luz. Sin embargo, todavía deben abordarse algunos problemas que presentan, como la inestabilidad química o estructural en condiciones ambientales. Con el fin de comprender mejor la estabilidad estructural y el papel desempeñado por la interacción entre el catión orgánico y la red inorgánica, estudiamos las propiedades estructurales y optoelectrónicas de las perovskitas de la familia FAxMA1-xPbI3 a diferentes presiones (hasta 15 GPa) y temperaturas (de 10 a 385 K). Nuestra investigación de este material es realizada por medio de espectroscopía óptica no invasiva, como fotoluminiscencia (PL), Raman y elipsometría. En los artículos aquí recopilados se muestra el primer diagrama de fase completo de perovskitas de yoduro de plomo de cationes mixtos (formamidinio y metilamonio), en función de la temperatura y la composición. Este diagrama puede servir para evaluar la concentración relativa óptima de los cationes orgánicos para estabilizar la fase cúbica con respecto a los cambios de temperatura. Estos materiales también presentan una dependencia atípica del bandgap con temperatura, que en la literatura se atribuye exclusivamente a la renormalización del gap debido a la interacción electrón-fonón. Sin embargo, es éste trabajo mostramos que los efectos de expansión térmica también juegan un papel decisivo en la dependencia del gap con temperatura. De todas las combinaciones de la familia de perovskitas de haluro organometálico, MAPbI3 es probablemente el más estudiado debido a sus excelentes propiedades. Se sabe que la interacción entre el movimiento de los cationes orgánicos y la jaula inorgánica rígida tiene un papel decisivo en la estructura cristalina de este material. Por ejemplo, debido al desorden dinámico de las moléculas de metilamonio, la perovskita MAPbI3 adopta una fase cúbica altamente simétrica a altas temperaturas. Cuando se enfría, tanto la contracción de la red como la reducción de la simetría debido a una transición a una fase ortorrómbica bloquean las moléculas de MA en los huecos de la red inorgánica. En los artículos aquí compilados observamos por primera vez un efecto similar pero a temperatura ambiente, aplicando presión hidrostática al material. En ambos casos, el bloqueo de los cationes de MA se puede observar indirectamente a través de una reducción drástica de los anchos de línea de fonones en las mediciones Raman. Demostrando, de ésta manera, que es posible alterar las propiedades vibratorias del material aplicando una presión controlada. Finalmente, la modificación del valor del bandgap y la variación de la estructura de bandas del sistema mixto FAxMA1-xPbI3 se evalúa en función de la composición de FA con elipsometría y fotoluminiscencia. Hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites have attracted a lot of attention since they were first introduced in a working photovoltaic device ten years ago, yielding an efficiency of around 3%. Since then, the efficiency of the perovskite solar cells has risen to almost stand toe to toe with that of commercial silicon photovoltaics. Besides, it allows the fabrication of flexible devices at an inexpensive cost. Due to its exceptionally good optoelectronic properties, there is also an intense research for different applications of this type of materials, such as sensors, lasers or light-emitting diodes. However, they still present some issues that need to be addressed, such as chemical or structural instabilities under ambient conditions. In order to better understand the structural stability, and the role played by the interaction between the organic cation and the inorganic framework, we studied the structural and optoelectronic properties of perovskites of the family FAxMA1-xPbI3 at different pressures (up to 15 GPa) and temperatures (10 to 385 K). We investigated this material by noninvasive optical spectroscopy means, such as photoluminescence (PL), Raman and ellipsometry. In the articles here compiled, the first complete phase diagram of mixed cation (formamidinium and methylammonium) lead iodide perovskites is provided as a function of temperature and composition. This serves to assess the best relative concentration of the organic cations to stabilize the cubic phase with respect to temperature changes. These materials also present an atypical dependence of the bandgap with temperature, which in the literature is ascribed exclusively to a huge electron-phonon renormalization. However, here we show that thermal expansion effects also play a decisive role in the temperature behavior of the fundamental gap. From all the combinations in the family of organometal halide perovskites, MAPbI3 is probably the most studied due to its outstanding optoelectronic properties. It is known that the interplay between the movement of the organic cations and the rigid inorganic cage has a decisive role in the crystalline structure of this material. For instance, due to the dynamic disorder of the methylammonia, MAPbI3 adopts a highly symmetric cubic phase at high temperatures. When cooling down, both the contraction of the lattice and the reduction of symmetry due to a transition to an orthorhombic phase lock the MA molecules in the cage voids. We are able to observe for the first time a similar effect but at room temperature, by applying hydrostatic pressure to the material. In both cases, the locking of the MA cations can be indirectly observed through a drastic reduction of the phonon linewidths in Raman experiments. We have shown, in this way, that it is possible to alter the vibrational properties of the material by applying a controlled hydrostatic pressure. Finally, the tuning of the bandgap and the variation of the band structure of the mixed-system FAxMA1-xPbI3 is evaluated as a function of FA composition with ellipsometry and photoluminescence.

In this study, it is demonstrated that a finer nanostructure produced under a rapid rate of solvent removal significantly improves charge separation in a high-performance polymer:fullerene bulk-heterojunction blend. During spin-coating, variations in solvent evaporation rate give rise to lateral phase separation gradients with the degree of coarseness decreasing away from the center of rotation. As a result, across spin-coated thin films the photocurrent at the first interference maximum varies as much as 25%, which is much larger than any optical effect. This is investigated by combining information on the surface morphology of the active layer imaged by atomic force microscopy,the 3D nanostructure imaged by electron tomography, fi lm formationduring the spin coating process imaged by optical interference and photocurrent generation distribution in devices imaged by a scanning light pulse technique. The observation that the nanostructure of organic photovoltaic blends can strongly vary across spin-coated thin films will aid the design of solvent mixtures suitable for high molecular-weight polymers and of coating techniques amenable to large area processing. Des de la seva aparició com a alternativa per la conversió d’energia fotovoltaica, el camp de les cel·les solars orgàniques ha experimentat un progrés significatiu, especialment en els darrers 15 anys. El gran interès en la tecnologia fotovoltaica orgànica (OPV, per les sigles en anglès) es deu principalment al seu potencial baix cost. Rellevants avenços científics han empès les eficiències de conversió energètica fins al 12%, fet que encoratja a acostar les OPV al mercat. Tanmateix, altres aspectes decisius per la seva industrialització han estat menys atesos. Aquesta tesi tracta tres qüestions clau que la tecnologia OPV ha d’afrontar per tal d’assolir una transferència fiable del laboratori a la industria. En primer lloc, es necessiten estratègies pel processat i post-processat a gran escala, idealment amb un cost reduït. En aquest treball es presenta una amplia investigació en inkjet printing. És necessari tenir un profund coneixement d’aquesta tècnica compatible amb roll-to-roll per tal d’assolir morfologies de capa adequades. S’ha trobat que la cinètica d’assecat de les capes és especialment crítica. En relació a això, s’ha desenvolupat un nou mètode per determinar patrons d’impressió apropiats per la deposició de la capa activa. A més, s’ha demostrat l’ús d’un tractament alternatiu anomenat vapour printing en dispositius OPV. Utilitzant aquest mètode amb vapor de dissolvent adequat, el tractament de la capa activa es pot assolir en temps molt més curts en comparació a altres tècniques. Un altre aspecte que ha estat poc atès està relacionat amb els dissolvents utilitzats pel processat dels OPV, especialment per la deposició de la capa activa. Típicament s’utilitzen dissolvents halogenats, com el clorbenzè o el diclorbenzè, essent alguns d’ells prohibits per aplicacions industrials. Substituir-los per formulacions verdes és, per tant, una necessitat primordial. Per tal de trobar sistemes aptes de dissolvents verds, s’ha utilitzat un mètode basat en la solubilitat. Aquest mètode, prèviament demostrat per cel·les solars polimèriques, s’estén de manera satisfactòria en aquesta tesi en dispositius basats en petita molècula. També s’aporten nous coneixements sobre la precisió del mètode. L’oxid d’indi i estany (ITO, per les seves sigles en anglès), freqüentment utilitzat com a elèctrode conductor transparent, contribueix de manera important en el cost d’un mòdul OPV. Altres raons per reemplaçar aquest component inclouen la seva modesta flexibilitat i conductivitat, el que pot limitar l’extracció de corrent elèctric en dispositius de gran àrea. Una possible alternativa són les xarxes metàl·liques combinades amb una capa transparent semiconductora. Tot i resoldre l’aspecte de la conductivitat, altres factors limiten encara l’extracció de corrent. El nou mètode utilitzat en aquest treball per preparar aquestes estructures venç aquests factors. Es necesario tener un profundo conocimiento sobre esta técnica compatible con roll-to-roll para obtener morfologías de capa adecuadas. Se ha encontrado que la cinética de secado de la capa es especialmente crítica. En relación a esto, se ha desarrollado un nuevo método para determinar patrones de impresión adecuados para la deposición de la capa activa. Además, se ha demostrado el uso de un tratamiento alternativo llamado vapour printing en dispositivos OPV. Utilizando este método con vapores de disolvente aptos, el tratamiento de la capa activa se puede alcanzar en tiempos mucho más cortos en comparación con otras técnicas. Otro aspecto que ha sido poco atendido está relacionado con los disolventes utilizados en el procesado de las OPV, especialmente en la deposición de la capa activa. Típicamente se emplean disolventes halogenados, como el clorobenceno o diclorobenzeno, estando alguno de ellos prohibidos en aplicaciones industriales. Su substitución por formulaciones verdes es, por tanto, una necesidad primordial. Para encontrar sistemas aptos de disolventes verdes, se ha utilizado un método basado en la solubilidad. Este método, previamente demostrado para células solares poliméricas, se extiende de manera exitosa en esta tesis para dispositivos basados en pequeña molécula. También se aportan nuevos conocimientos sobre la precisión del método. El óxido de indio y estaño (ITO, por sus siglas en inglés), frecuentemente utilizado como electrodo conductor transparente, contribuye de manera importante en el coste de un módulo OPV. Otros motivos para substituir este componente incluyen su modesta flexibilidad y conductividad, lo que puede limitar la extracción de corriente eléctrica en dispositivos de gran área. Una posible alternativa son las redes metálicas combinadas con una capa transparente semiconductora. Se demuestran dispositivos eficientes libres de ITO., Since its emergence as an alternative for photovoltaic energy conversion, the field of organic solar cells has experienced significant progress, especially in the last 15 years. The high interest in organic photovoltaics (OPV) technology is mostly due to its lowcost potential. Relevant scientific advances have pushed power conversion efficiencies up to 12%, which is encouraging for bringing OPV to market. However, other decisive aspects for their industrialisation have been less attended. This thesis deals with three key issues that OPV technology has to face in order to achieve a reliable lab-to-fab transfer. First, approaches for large-scale processing and post-processing are needed, ideally with reduced cost. In this work a broad investigation in inkjet printing is presented. A deep understanding on this roll-to-roll compatible technique is necessary to achieve suitable layer morphology. The drying kinetics of the wet film has been found to be especially critical. In relation to this, a new method to determine appropriate printing patterns for active layer deposition has been developed. Moreover, an alternative post-processing treatment called vapour printing is demonstrated for OPV devices. Using this method with suitable solvent vapour, the annealing of the active layer can be achieved in much shorter times as compared to other treatments. Another aspect that has been poorly attended is related to the solvents used for OPV processing, specifically for active layer deposition. Typically halogenated solvents such as chlorobenzene or o-dichlorobenzene are employed, being some of them banned for industrial applications. Their replacement by green formulations is therefore a major need. In order to find suitable green solvent systems, a method based on solubility has been used. This method, previously demonstrated for polymeric solar cells, is successfully extended in this thesis for small molecule based devices. New insights into the accuracy of the method are also provided. A major contributor to the cost of an OPV module is the indium-tin-oxide (ITO), commonly used as a transparent conductive electrode. Further reasons to replace this component include its modest flexibility and conductivity, which may limit current extraction in large area devices. One possible alternative are metallic grids combined with a transparent semiconductor layer. Although the conductivity issue is solved, other factors still limit current extraction. The new method used in this work to prepare such structures overcomes these features. Efficient, ITO-free devices are demonstrated.
