Search

Surveys with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have discovered candidate galaxies in the first 400 Myr of cosmic time. Preliminary indications have suggested these candidate galaxies may be more massive and abundant than previously thought. However, without confirmed distances, their inferred properties remain uncertain. Here we identify four galaxies located in the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) imaging with photometric redshifts z~10-13. These galaxies include the first redshift z>12 systems discovered with distances spectroscopically confirmed by JWST in a companion paper. Using stellar population modelling, we find the galaxies typically contain a hundred million solar masses in stars, in stellar populations that are less than one hundred million years old. The moderate star formation rates and compact sizes suggest elevated star formation rate surface densities, a key indicator of their formation pathways. Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) provides a powerful tool for detecting strong line emission in star forming galaxies (SFGs) without the need for target pre-selection. As part of the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, we leverage the near-infrared wavelength capabilities of NIRISS ($1-2.2\mu$m) to observe rest-optical emission lines out to $\rm{z}\sim 3.4$, to a depth and with a spatial resolution higher than ever before (H$\alpha$ to z750$A in our sample to be $12\%$. We determine a strong correlation between the measured H$\beta$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EWs, supporting that the high [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EW objects require massive stars in young stellar populations to generate the high energy photons needed to doubly ionise oxygen. We extracted spectra for objects up to 2 mag fainter in the near-infrared than previous WFSS studies with the Hubble Space Telescope. We investigate the properties of 12 ultra-massive passively evolving early type galaxies (ETGs) at z_phot>1.4 in the COSMOS 2 deg^2 field. These 12 ETGs were selected as pBzKs, have accurate 1.42.5x10^11 M_sun (Chabrier IMF). Contrary to previous claims, the half light radii estimated in very high S/N imaging data from HST+ACS are found to be large for most of the sample, consistent with local ellipticals. The Canada-France Brown Dwarf Survey is a wide eld survey for cool brown dwarfs conducted with the MegaCam camera on the CFHT telescope. Our objectives are to nd ultracool brown dwarfs and to constrain the eld brown dwarf mass function from a large and homogeneous sample of L and T dwarfs. We identify candidates in CFHT/Megacam i' and z' images and follow them up with pointed NIR imaging on several telescopes. Our survey has to date found 50 T dwarfs candidates and 170 L or late M dwarf candidates drawn from a larger sample of 1300 candidates with typical ultracool dwarfs i'-z' colours, found in 900 square degrees. We currently have completed the NIR follow-up on a large part of the survey for all candidates from the latest T dwarfs known to the late L color range.
