We present an optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-101b. We observed three primary transits with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, covering a wavelength range from 0.3 to 1 $\mu$m. The observations suffer from significant systematics that we model using Gaussian Processes. Kernel selection for the Gaussian Processes is performed in a data-driven approach through Bayesian model comparison. We find a flat and featureless transmission spectrum, corroborating a previous measurement obtained with HST/Wide-Field Camera 3 in the 1–1.7 $\mu$m range. The spectrum is consistent with high-altitude clouds located at less than 100 $\mu$bar. This cloud layer completely blocks our view into deeper parts of the atmosphere and makes WASP-101b the cloudiest gas giant observed so far. We compute a series of temperature-pressure profiles for WASP-101b and compare these to condensation curves for cloud particles, which match clouds composed of silicates. We also include 13 transits observed with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and use these to refine system parameters.

We report spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of a dormant black hole (BH) candidate from Gaia DR3. The system, which we call Gaia BH2, contains a $\sim 1M_{\odot}$ red giant and a dark companion with mass $M_2 = 8.9\pm 0.3\,M_{\odot}$ that is very likely a BH. The orbital period, $P_{\rm orb} = 1277$ days, is much longer than that of any previously studied BH binary. Our radial velocity (RV) follow-up over a 7-month period spans more than 90% of the orbit's dynamic range in RV and is in excellent agreement with predictions of the Gaia solution. UV imaging and high-resolution optical spectra rule out all plausible luminous companions that could explain the orbit. The star is a bright ($G=12.3$), slightly metal-poor ($\rm [Fe/H]=-0.22$) low-luminosity giant ($T_{\rm eff}=4600\,\rm K$; $R = 7.8\,R_{\odot}$; $\log\left[g/\left({\rm cm\,s^{-2}}\right)\right] = 2.6$). The binary's orbit is moderately eccentric ($e=0.52$). The giant is strongly enhanced in $\alpha-$elements, with $\rm [\alpha/Fe] = +0.26$, but the system's Galactocentric orbit is typical of the thin disk. We obtained X-ray and radio nondetections of the source near periastron, which support BH accretion models in which the net accretion rate at the horizon is much lower than the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton rate. At a distance of 1.16 kpc, Gaia BH2 is the second-nearest known BH, after Gaia BH1. Its orbit -- like that of Gaia BH1 -- seems too wide to have formed through common envelope evolution. Gaia BH1 and BH2 have orbital periods at opposite edges of the Gaia DR3 sensitivity curve, perhaps hinting at a bimodal intrinsic period distribution for wide BH binaries. Dormant BH binaries like Gaia BH1 and Gaia BH2 likely significantly outnumber their close, X-ray bright cousins, but their formation pathways remain uncertain., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We present high-precision radial velocities (RVs) from the HARPS-N spectrograph for HD79210 and HD79211, two M0V members of a gravitationally-bound binary system. We detect a planet candidate with a period of $24.421^{+0.016}_{-0.017}$ days around HD79211 in these HARPS-N RVs, validating the planet candidate originally identified in CARMENES RV data alone. Using HARPS-N, CARMENES and HIRES RVs spanning a total of 25 years, we further refine the planet candidate parameters to $P=24.422\pm0.014$ days, $K=3.19\pm0.27$ m/s, $M$ sin $i = 10.6 \pm 1.2 M_\oplus$, and $a = 0.142 \pm0.005$ au. We do not find any additional planet candidate signals in the data of HD79211 nor do we find any planet candidate signals in HD79210. This system adds to the number of exoplanets detected in binaries with M dwarf members, and serves as a case study for planet formation in stellar binaries., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 29 pages, 17 figures

This star was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in sectors 4 and 31, revealing two small transiting planets. The inner planet, HD 15906 b, was detected with an unambiguous period but the outer planet, HD 15906 c, showed only two transits separated by ∼ 734 d, leading to 36 possible values of its period. We performed follow-up observations with the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) to confirm the true period of HD 15906 c and improve the radius precision of the two planets. From TESS, CHEOPS, and additional ground-based photometry, we find that HD 15906 b has a radius of 2.24 ± 0.08 R and a period of 10.924709 ± 0.000032 d, whilst HD 15906 c has a radius of 2.93+−000607 R and a period of 21.583298+−00000055000052 d. Assuming zero bond albedo and full day-night heat redistribution, the inner and outer planet have equilibrium temperatures of 668 ± 13 K and 532 ± 10 K, respectively. The HD 15906 system has become one of only six multiplanet systems with two warm (700 K) sub-Neptune sized planets transiting a bright star (G ≤ 10 mag). Measured spectral shifts due to intrinsic stellar variability (e.g., pulsations, granulation) and activity (e.g., spots, plages) are the largest source of error for extreme precision radial velocity (EPRV) exoplanet detection. Several methods are designed to disentangle stellar signals from true center-of-mass shifts due to planets. The EXPRES Stellar Signals Project (ESSP) presents a self-consistent comparison of 22 different methods tested on the same extreme-precision spectroscopic data from EXPRES. Methods derived new activity indicators, constructed models for mapping an indicator to the needed RV correction, or separated out shape- and shift-driven RV components. Since no ground truth is known when using real data, relative method performance is assessed using the total and nightly scatter of returned RVs and agreement between the results of different methods. Nearly all submitted methods return a lower RV RMS than classic linear decorrelation, but no method is yet consistently reducing the RV RMS to sub-meter-per-second levels. There is a concerning lack of agreement between the RVs returned by different methods. These results suggest that continued progress in this field necessitates increased interpretability of methods, high-cadence data to capture stellar signals at all timescales, and continued tests like the ESSP using consistent data sets with more advanced metrics for method performance. Characterizing the bulk compositions of transiting exoplanets within the M dwarf radius valley offers a unique means to establish whether the radius valley emerges from an atmospheric mass loss process or is imprinted by planet formation itself. We present the confirmation of such a planet orbiting an early M dwarf ($T_{\rm mag} = 11.0294 \pm 0.0074, M_s = 0.513 \pm 0.012\ M_\odot, R_s = 0.515 \pm 0.015\ R_\odot, T_{\rm eff} =3690\pm 50 K$): TOI-1695 b ($P = 3.13$ days, $R_p = 1.90^{+0.16}_{-0.14}\ R_\oplus$). TOI-1695 b's radius and orbital period situate the planet between model predictions from thermally-driven mass loss versus gas depleted formation, offering an important test case for radius valley emergence models around early M dwarfs. We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-1695 b based on five sectors of TESS data and a suite of follow-up observations including 49 precise radial velocity measurements taken with the HARPS-N spectrograph. We measure a planetary mass of $6.36 \pm 1.00\ M_\oplus$, which reveals that TOI-1695 b is inconsistent with a purely terrestrial composition of iron and magnesium silicate, and instead is likely a water-rich planet. Our finding that TOI-1695 b is not terrestrial is inconsistent with the planetary system being sculpted by thermally driven mass loss. Many patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) have reduced the effect of aspirin, which may partly be explained by immature platelets. We aimed to investigate whether immature platelet markers can predict cardiovascular events in a large cohort of stable CAD patients. A total of 900 stable CAD patients were included and followed for a median of 3 years. We measured markers of immature platelets (platelet count, immature platelet count, immature platelet fraction, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, platelet mass, and thrombopoietin) using automated flow cytometry and studied their relation to cardiovascular events. Our primary endpoint was a composite of acute myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death. A composite of MI, ischemic stroke, stent thrombosis and all-cause mortality was analyzed as a secondary endpoint. We found no difference in immature platelet markers between CAD patients with or without cardiovascular events. Regression analysis using hazards rates showed that markers of immature platelets did not have any predictive value for endpoints (p-values >.05). Markers of immature platelets did not predict future cardiovascular events during a 3-year follow-up period in CAD patients. This suggests that immature platelets measured in a stable phase does not have a major role in predicting future cardiovascular events.

Moons orbiting exoplanets ("exomoons") may hold clues about planet formation, migration, and habitability. We investigate the plausibility of exomoons orbiting the temperate ($T_\text{eq}=294$ K) giant ($R = 9.2$ $\text{R}_\oplus$) planet HIP 41378 f. Previous studies have suggested that HIP 41378 f has a low apparent bulk density of $0.09\,\text{g}\,\text{cm}^{-3}$ and a flat near-infrared transmission spectrum, suggesting that it may possess circumplanetary rings. Given the planet's long orbital period ($P\approx1.5$ yr), it may also host a large exomoon. Here, we consider a hypothetical exomoon orbiting HIP 41378 f with the same satellite-to-planet mass ratio as the Moon-Earth system and assess its orbital stability using a suite of N-body and tidal migration simulations. We find that satellites up to this size are largely stable against Hill sphere escape and collisions with the host planet, consistent with theoretical stability limits determined by previous studies. We then simulate the expected transit signal from the exomoon and show that current transit observations likely cannot constrain the presence of exomoons orbiting HIP 41378 f, though future observations may be capable of detecting exomoons in other systems. Finally, we simulate the combined transmission spectrum of HIP 41378 f and an exomoon with a low-metallicity atmosphere, and show that the total effective spectrum is contaminated at the $\sim$10 ppm level. Background New biomarkers are warranted to identify patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) at high risk of recurrent cardiovascular events. It has been reported that the expression of microRNAs (miRs) may influence the development of CAD. Objectives We aimed to investigate whether the expression of selected candidate miRs is a predictor of cardiovascular events in a cohort of stable CAD patients. Methods We performed a single-center prospective study of 749 stable CAD patients with a median follow-up of 2.8 years. We investigated the expression of nine candidate miRs and their relation to cardiovascular events in this cohort. The primary endpoint was the composite of nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI), stent thrombosis (ST), ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death. The composite of nonfatal MI and ST was analyzed as a secondary endpoint. Furthermore, nonfatal MI, ST, ischemic stroke, and all-cause mortality were analyzed as individual endpoints. Results Employing receiver operating characteristic curves, it was shown that compared with traditional cardiovascular risk factors alone, combining the expression of miR-223–3p with existing traditional cardiovascular risk factors increased the predictive value of ST (area under the curve: 0.88 vs. 0.77, p = 0.04), the primary composite endpoint (0.65 vs. 0.61, p = 0.049), and the secondary endpoint of the composite of nonfatal MI and ST (0.68 vs. 0.62, p = 0.04). Conclusion Among patients with CAD, adding miR-223–3p expression to traditional cardiovascular risk factors may improve prediction of cardiovascular events, particularly ST. Clinical trials confirming these findings are warranted.

We report the discovery and confirmation of the planetary system TOI-1288. This late G dwarf harbours two planets: TOI-1288 b and TOI-1288 c. We combine TESS space-borne and ground-based transit photometry with HARPS-N and HIRES high-precision Doppler measurements, which we use to constrain the masses of both planets in the system and the radius of planet b. TOI-1288~b has a period of $2.699835^{+0.000004}_{-0.000003}$ d, a radius of $5.24 \pm 0.09$ R$_\oplus$, and a mass of $42 \pm 3$ M$_\oplus$, making this planet a hot transiting super-Neptune situated right in the Neptunian desert. This desert refers to a paucity of Neptune-sized planets on short period orbits. Our 2.4-year-long Doppler monitoring of TOI-1288 revealed the presence of a Saturn-mass planet on a moderately eccentric orbit ($0.13^{+0.07}_{-0.09}$) with a minimum mass of $84 \pm 7$ M$_\oplus$ and a period of $443^{+11}_{-13}$ d. The 5 sectors worth of TESS data do not cover our expected mid-transit time for TOI-1288 c, and we do not detect a transit for this planet in these sectors., 16 pages, 17 figures, under review MNRAS

We present mass and radius measurements of K2-79b and K2-222b, two transiting exoplanets orbiting active G-type stars. Their respective 10.99d and 15.39d orbital periods fall near periods of signals induced by stellar magnetic activity. The two signals might therefore interfere and lead to an inaccurate estimate of exoplanet mass. We present a method to mitigate these effects when radial velocity and activity indicator observations are available over multiple observing seasons and the orbital period of the exoplanet is known. We perform correlation and periodogram analyses on sub-sets composed of each target's two observing seasons, in addition to the full data sets. For both targets, these analyses reveal an optimal season with little to no interference at the orbital period of the known exoplanet. We make a confident mass detection of each exoplanet by confirming agreement between fits to the full radial velocity set and the optimal season. For K2-79b, we measure a mass of 11.8 $\pm$ 3.6 $M_{Earth}$ and a radius of 4.09 $\pm$ 0.17 $R_{Earth}$. For K2-222b, we measure a mass of 8.0 $\pm$ 1.8 $M_{Earth}$ and a radius of 2.35 $\pm$ 0.08 $R_{Earth}$. According to model predictions, K2-79b is a highly irradiated Uranus-analog and K2-222b hosts significant amounts of water ice. We present a near-infrared transmission spectrum of the long period (P=542 days), temperate ($T_{eq}$=294 K) giant planet HIP 41378 f obtained with the Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). With a measured mass of 12 $\pm$ 3 $M_{\oplus}$ and a radius of 9.2 $\pm$ 0.1 $R_{\oplus}$, HIP 41378 f has an extremely low bulk density (0.09 $\pm$ 0.02 g/cm$^{3}$). We measure the transit depth with a median precision of 84 ppm in 30 spectrophotometric channels with uniformly-sized widths of 0.018 microns. Within this level of precision, the spectrum shows no evidence of absorption from gaseous molecular features between 1.1-1.7 microns. Comparing the observed transmission spectrum to a suite of 1D radiative-convective-thermochemical-equilibrium forward models, we rule out clear, low-metallicity atmospheres and find that the data prefer high-metallicity atmospheres or models with an additional opacity source such as high-altitude hazes and/or circumplanetary rings. We explore the ringed scenario for this planet further by jointly fitting the K2 and HST light curves to constrain the properties of putative rings. We also assess the possibility of distinguishing between hazy, ringed, and high-metallicity scenarios at longer wavelengths with JWST. HIP 41378 f provides a rare opportunity to probe the atmospheric composition of a cool giant planet spanning the gap between the Solar System giants, directly imaged planets, and the highly-irradiated hot Jupiters traditionally studied via transit spectroscopy., 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJL. Increased platelet activity is an important predictor for recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Flow cytometry is an advanced method for evaluation of platelet activity. We aimed to summarize the current literature on dynamic changes in platelet activity analyzed by flow cytometry in patients with ACS. Employing the guidelines of Preferred Report Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we searched PubMed and Embase on October 26, 2021, and identified studies measuring platelet activity with flow cytometry in ACS patients in the acute phase (baseline) and at follow-up in a more stable phase. In the 12 included studies, fibrinogen receptor, α-granule secretion, platelet reactivity index, monocyte-platelet aggregates, neutrophil-platelet aggregates, and reticulated platelets were measured. The fibrinogen receptor and α-granule secretion were either unchanged or lower during follow-up measurements than in the acute phase. Platelet reactivity index showed inconsistent results. Values of monocyte-platelet aggregates and neutrophil-platelet aggregates were lower at follow-up than at baseline (p-values 0.64) or lower at 1 to 2 months follow-up (p-value 0.04), and also lower at 5 months to 1-year follow-up (p-value >0.005) compared with baseline. Overall, flow cytometric analyses of platelet function in ACS patients showed that platelet activity was lower at follow-up than at baseline. However, in some patients, platelet activity remained unchanged from baseline to follow-up, possibly indicating a sustained high platelet activity that may increase the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events.

Newly produced immature platelets are larger, contain higher amounts of residual RNA, and are more reactive than mature platelets. Flow cytometry using the SYTO-13 dye is a method for the subdivision of immature platelets from mature platelets based on the labelling of intracellular platelet RNA, enabling the simultaneous investigation of the reactivity of each platelet population. This method provides detailed information on several aspects of platelet physiology using a combination of platelet surface markers and agonists. Currently, no standardized protocol exists across laboratories. Here, we describe a flow cytometry protocol in detail to investigate platelet reactivity and its relation to platelet maturity. We analyzed 20 healthy individuals with the protocol and compared the platelet subpopulation with the highest SYTO-13 labelling (in the first quintile, “SYTO-high”) corresponding to the most immature platelets (highest RNA content) with the platelet subpopulation with the lowest SYTO-13 labelling (in the fifth quintile, “SYTO-low”) corresponding to the mature platelets with the lowest RNA content. SYTO-high platelets had overall significantly increased platelet reactivity compared with that of SYTO-low platelets. The presented method may be a valuable research tool for the analysis of platelet reactivity and its relation to platelet maturity.

Extremely low-density exoplanets are tantalizing targets for atmospheric characterization because of their promisingly large signals in transmission spectroscopy. We present the first analysis of the atmosphere of the lowest-density gas giant currently known, HAT-P-67 b. This inflated Saturn-mass exoplanet sits at the boundary between hot and ultrahot gas giants, where thermal dissociation of molecules begins to dominate atmospheric composition. We observed a transit of HAT-P-67 b at high spectral resolution with CARMENES and searched for atomic and molecular species using cross-correlation and likelihood mapping. Furthermore, we explored potential atmospheric escape by targeting H$\alpha$ and the metastable helium line. We detect Ca II and Na I with significances of 13.2$\sigma$ and 4.6$\sigma$, respectively. Unlike in several ultrahot Jupiters, we do not measure a day-to-night wind. The large line depths of Ca II suggest that the upper atmosphere may be more ionized than models predict. We detect strong variability in H$\alpha$ and the helium triplet during the observations. These signals suggest the possible presence of an extended planetary outflow that causes an early ingress and late egress. In the averaged transmission spectrum, we measure redshifted absorption at the $\sim 3.8\%$ and $\sim 4.5\%$ level in the H$\alpha$ and He I triplet lines, respectively. From an isothermal Parker wind model, we derive a mass loss rate of $\dot{M} \sim 10^{13}~\rm{g/s}$ and an outflow temperature of $T \sim 9900~\rm{K}$. HIP 9618 (HD 12572, TOI-1471, TIC 306263608) is a bright ($G=9.0$ mag) solar analogue. TESS photometry revealed the star to have two candidate planets with radii of $3.9 \pm 0.044$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 b) and $3.343 \pm 0.039$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 c). While the 20.77291 day period of HIP 9618 b was measured unambiguously, HIP 9618 c showed only two transits separated by a 680-day gap in the time series, leaving many possibilities for the period. To solve this issue, CHEOPS performed targeted photometry of period aliases to attempt to recover the true period of planet c, and successfully determined the true period to be 52.56349 d. High-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS-N, SOPHIE and CAFE revealed a mass of $10.0 \pm 3.1 M_\oplus$ for HIP 9618 b, which, according to our interior structure models, corresponds to a $6.8\pm1.4\%$ gas fraction. HIP 9618 c appears to have a lower mass than HIP 9618 b, with a 3-sigma upper limit of $< 18M_\oplus$. Follow-up and archival RV measurements also reveal a clear long-term trend which, when combined with imaging and astrometric information, reveal a low-mass companion ($0.08^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_\odot$) orbiting at $26^{+19}_{-11}$ au. This detection makes HIP 9618 one of only five bright ($K50$ d, opening the door for the atmospheric characterisation of warm ($T_{\rm eq}, 19 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. Accepted at MNRAS. We statistically validated a sample of hot Neptune candidates applying a two-step vetting technique using DAVE and TRICERATOPS. We performed a systematic validation of 250 transit-like events in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) archive in the parameter region defined by $P\leq 4$ d and $3R_\oplus\leq R\leq 5R_\oplus$. Through our analysis, we identified 18 hot Neptune-sized candidates, with a false positive probability $, 24 pages, 20 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS

The study of the exchange of momentum and energy between wave components of the turbulent velocity field, the so-called triad interactions, offers a unique way of visualizing and describing turbulence. Most often, this study has been carried out by Direct Numerical Simulations or by power spectral measurements. Due to the complexity of the problem and the great range of velocity scales in high Reynolds number developed turbulence, direct measurements of the interaction between the individual wave components have been rare. In the present work, we therefore present measurements and related computer simulations of triad interactions between controlled wave components injected into an approximately laminar and uniform flow from an open wind tunnel by vortex shedding from two rods suspended into the flow. This well-defined vortex shedding approximates well a two-dimensional flow, which makes the analysis of the triadic interactions considerably less complex to analyze than in a fully developed spatially three-dimensional flow. With the information obtained from the simulations, we are hereby able to isolate and display the individual triad interactions taking place as the flow develops downstream as well as the strengths of these interactions. The experiments provide the time constants governing the development of higher order frequency components. The combination of these experiments and simulations provide unique insight into the inner workings of turbulence and shows how the nonlinear term in the Navier-Stokes equation on average forces the energy towards higher frequencies, which is the reason for the so-called energy cascade.

INTRODUCTION: Regular exercise training is essential in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the beneficial effects of exercise remain only partly explained. Platelets play a key role in CVD and may be affected by regular exercise training. We aimed to systematically summarise studies investigating the effect of regular exercise training on platelet function in patients with CVD and in healthy individuals.METHODS: Studies were identified by PubMed, Embase and Web of Science May 16, 2022. We selected studies investigating markers of platelet function in relation to regular exercise training in patients with CVD and in healthy individuals. Regular exercise was defined as exercise training for four weeks or more.RESULTS: Of the included studies, 11 investigated patients with CVD and 29 were on healthy individuals. Studies were heterogeneous regarding design, study population and methodology, and the results were ambiguous. In total, 52 different markers of platelet function were investigated with platelet aggregation, soluble P-selectin, and thromboxane B 2 (TXB 2) as the most frequently examined. When evaluating between-group changes after regular exercise, two studies found a reduced platelet aggregation in the exercise group whilst three studies did not find a difference between groups. With respect to TXB 2, three studies reported a reduction and two studies an increase in the exercise group. There were no between-group differences in the seven studies examining soluble P-selectin. CONCLUSION: Regular exercise training has no clear impact on platelet function in patients with CVD or healthy individuals.PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42022350539.

This paper reports on the detailed characterisation of the K2-111 planetary system with K2, WASP, and ASAS-SN photometry as well as high-resolution spectroscopic data from HARPS-N and ESPRESSO. The host, K2-111, is confirmed to be a mildly evolved ($\log g=4.17$), iron-poor ([Fe/H]$=-0.46$), but alpha-enhanced ([$\alpha$/Fe]$=0.27$), chromospherically quiet, very old thick disc G2 star. A global fit, performed by using PyORBIT shows that the transiting planet, K2-111b, orbits with a period $P_b=5.3518\pm0.0004$ d, and has a planet radius of $1.82^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$ R$_\oplus$ and a mass of $5.29^{+0.76}_{-0.77}$ M$_\oplus$, resulting in a bulk density slightly lower than that of the Earth. The stellar chemical composition and the planet properties are consistent with K2-111b being a terrestrial planet with an iron core mass fraction lower than the Earth. We announce the existence of a second signal in the radial velocity data that we attribute to a non-transiting planet, K2-111c, with an orbital period of $15.6785\pm 0.0064$ days, orbiting in near-3:1 mean-motion resonance with the transiting planet, and a minimum planet mass of $11.3\pm1.1$ M$_\oplus$. Both planet signals are independently detected in the HARPS-N and ESPRESSO data when fitted separately. Upgrading the FIES spectrograph with the aim of attaining more precise radial velocities

The magnetosphere of an exoplanet has yet to be unambiguously detected. Investigations of star-planet interaction and neutral atomic hydrogen absorption during transit to detect magnetic fields in hot Jupiters have been inconclusive, and interpretations of the transit absorption non-unique. In contrast, ionized species escaping a magnetized exoplanet, particularly from the polar caps, should populate the magnetosphere, allowing detection of different regions from the plasmasphere to the extended magnetotail, and characterization of the magnetic field producing them. Here, we report ultraviolet observations of HAT-P-11b, a low-mass (0.08 MJ) exoplanet showing strong, phase-extended transit absorption of neutral hydrogen (maximum and tail transit depths of 32 \pm 4%, 27 \pm 4%) and singly ionized carbon (15 \pm 4%, 12.5 \pm 4%). We show that the atmosphere should have less than six times the solar metallicity (at 200 bars), and the exoplanet must also have an extended magnetotail (1.8-3.1 AU). The HAT-P-11b equatorial magnetic field strength should be about 1-5 Gauss. Our panchromatic approach using ionized species to simultaneously derive metallicity and magnetic field strength can now constrain interior and dynamo models of exoplanets, with implications for formation and evolution scenarios., 68 pages, 12 figures. Molecular oxygen (O2) paired with a reducing gas is regarded as a promising biosignature pair for atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets. In circumstances when O2 may not be detectable in a planetary atmosphere (for instance, at mid-IR wavelengths) it has been suggested that O3, the photochemical product of O2, could be used as a proxy to infer the presence of O2. While O3 is not directly produced by life, it plays an important role in habitability as the ozone layer is the primary source of UV shielding for surface life on modern Earth. However, O3 production is known to have a nonlinear dependence on O2, as well as being strongly influenced by the UV spectrum of the host star. To evaluate the reliability of O3 as a proxy for O2 we used Atmos, a 1D coupled climate/photochemistry code, to study the O2-O3 relationship for "Earth-like'' habitable zone planets around a variety of stellar hosts (G0V-M5V) for O2 abundances from 0.01%-150% of the Present Atmospheric Level (PAL) on modern Earth. We studied how O3 emission features for these planetary atmospheres varied for different O2 and O3 abundances using the radiative transfer code PICASO. Overall we found that the O2-O3 relationship differed significantly around different stellar hosts, with different trends for hotter stars (G0V-K2V) than cooler stars (K5V-M5V). Planets orbiting hotter host stars experience an increase in O3 when O2 levels are initially decreased from the present atmospheric level, with maximum O3 abundance occurring at 25-55% PAL O2. Although this effect may seem counterintuitive, it is due to the pressure dependency on O3 production, as with less atmospheric O2 incoming UV photons capable of O2 photolysis are able to reach lower (denser) regions of the atmosphere to spark O3 formation. This effect is not present for planets orbiting our cooler host stars (K5V-M5V), as the weaker incident UV flux (especially FUV flux) does not allow O3 formation to occur at dense enough regions of the atmosphere such that the faster O3 production outweighs a smaller source of O2 from which to create O3. As a result, for cooler host stars the O3 abundance decreases as O2 decreases, albeit nonlinearly. Interpretation of O3 emission spectral features was found to require knowledge of the atmosphere’s temperature profiles -particularly the temperature differences between the planetary surface and stratospheric temperature- which are highly influenced by the amount of stratospheric O3. Planets experiencing higher amounts of incident UV have more efficient O3 production and UV absorption leading to larger stratospheric temperature inversions, and therefore shallower emission features. Overall it will be extremely difficult (or impossible) to infer precise O2 levels from an O3 measurement, however, with information about the UV spectrum of the host star and context clues, O3 will provide valuable information about potential surface habitability of an exoplanet.

We present a precise characterization of the TOI-561 planetary system obtained by combining previously published data with TESS and CHEOPS photometry, and a new set of $62$ HARPS-N radial velocities (RVs). Our joint analysis confirms the presence of four transiting planets, namely TOI-561 b ($P = 0.45$ d, $R = 1.42$ R$_\oplus$, $M = 2.0$ M$_\oplus$), c ($P = 10.78$ d, $R = 2.91$ R$_\oplus$, $M = 5.4$ M$_\oplus$), d ($P = 25.7$ d, $R = 2.82$ R$_\oplus$, $M = 13.2$ M$_\oplus$) and e ($P = 77$ d, $R = 2.55$ R$_\oplus$, $M = 12.6$ M$_\oplus$). Moreover, we identify an additional, long-period signal ($>450$ d) in the RVs, which could be due to either an external planetary companion or to stellar magnetic activity. The precise masses and radii obtained for the four planets allowed us to conduct interior structure and atmospheric escape modelling. TOI-561 b is confirmed to be the lowest density ($\rho_{\rm b} = 3.8 \pm 0.5$ g cm$^{-3}$) ultra-short period (USP) planet known to date, and the low metallicity of the host star makes it consistent with the general bulk density-stellar metallicity trend. According to our interior structure modelling, planet b has basically no gas envelope, and it could host a certain amount of water. In contrast, TOI-561 c, d, and e likely retained an H/He envelope, in addition to a possibly large water layer. The inferred planetary compositions suggest different atmospheric evolutionary paths, with planets b and c having experienced significant gas loss, and planets d and e showing an atmospheric content consistent with the original one. The uniqueness of the USP planet, the presence of the long-period planet TOI-561 e, and the complex architecture make this system an appealing target for follow-up studies.

Patients with essential thrombocythaemia (ET) have an increased risk of thromboembolic events, which may differ according to different cytoreductive drugs. We investigated the effect of cytoreductive treatment on platelet function and turnover in ET patients. Blood samples were obtained at 1 and 24 h after aspirin intake. Platelet function was evaluated by platelet aggregation and flow cytometry. Platelet turnover was assessed by immature platelet count, immature platelet fraction (IPF) and mean platelet volume (MPV). A total of 47 ET patients were included and grouped into 21 patients not receiving cytoreductive treatment, 15 patients receiving hydroxycarbamide and 11 patients receiving pegylated interferon alpha (peg-IFN). Patients receiving peg-IFN had significantly higher IPF and MPV than the other ET groups. Patients not receiving cytoreductive treatment had significantly higher platelet aggregation 24 h after aspirin intake than the other ET groups (p-values from 0.03 to 0.0002). Patients receiving hydroxycarbamide had significantly higher expression of platelet granule makers, P-selectin and CD63, than patients receiving peg-IFN (p-values ≤0.003). Cytoreduction provides more consistent platelet inhibition compared with no cytoreductive treatment. Moreover, peg-IFN provides superior inhibition of platelet activation markers than hydroxycarbamide, which in part may explain differences in risk of thromboembolic events in ET patients.

HAT-P-70 b is one of the most recent additions to the emergent class of exoplanets known as ultra-hot Jupiters: extremely irradiated gas giants that are hot enough to thermally dissociate most of their atmospheric species into their atomic constituents. Due to their elevated temperatures, large radii and short orbital periods, ultra-hot Jupiters are some of the most amenable targets for atmospheric characterization. Here, we present the first analysis of the atmosphere of HAT-P-70 b using high-resolution data from the HARPS-N spectrograph, collected as the planet transited in front of its host star. We individually resolve the Ca II H and K lines, the Na I doublet, and the H\(\alpha\), H\(\beta\) and H\(\gamma\) Balmer lines. Additionally, we search for neutral and ionized metals using a cross-correlation approach, which allows us to combine the signal from multiple spectral features. In total, we detect the presence of 9 different species (Ca II, Cr I, Cr II, Fe I, Fe II, H I, Mg I, Na I and V I), as well as tentative evidence of additional ones that will require further investigation. Overall, the signals of the detected species appear blue-shifted by a few kilometers per second, suggestive of high-velocity winds transporting material from the day-side to the night-side. The cores of the Ca II and H I lines form well above the continuum, indicating the existence of an extended envelope. The cross-correlation analysis also reveals the spectral shadow that the planets casts on its A-type host star during transit, which we use to refine the obliquity of this highly misaligned planet. Despite observing only one transit event, our work places HAT-P-70 b as one of the exoplanets with the highest number of species detected in its atmosphere, and it highlights the unique opportunity that ultra-hot Jupiters like HAT-P-70 b provide us with: as different species probe different pressures, we can reconstruct the structure of their atmospheres based on their rich transmission spectra.

The Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) is a fiber-fed optical spectrograph with a resolution of 44,000. TRES is a workhorse for recon spectroscopy as part of the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP). To date, over 4000 spectra of over 1700 TOIs have been obtained with TRES. In addition, over 200 TOIs have been observed with the Fiber-fed Echelle Spectrograph (FIES). These spectra are carefully examined to search for possible false positives such as double-lined spectra or targets that show large velocity variation indicating a stellar companion. The spectra are also used to derive stellar parameters using the Stellar Parameter Classification (SPC) tool. Extracted spectra along with quick-look stellar classification plots from the TRES pipeline are uploaded to ExoFOP weekly to encourage community collaboration. A full SPC analysis is ableto provide effective temperature, surface gravity, projected rotational velocity and metallicity. A quality flag indicator has also been applied to the classifications based on the quality of the data and the stellar type/parameters. These parameters are be uploaded to ExoFOP on a monthly basis. TRES absolute radial velocities are determined by applying a standard star correction and a correction based on observations of the monitoring of minor planets. Absolute velocities are available by request and will be uploaded to ExoFOP soon!

To push the radial velocity (RV) exoplanet detection threshold, it is crucial to find more reliable radial velocity extraction methods. The Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) technique has been used to infer the stellar magnetic flux from spectropolarimetric data for the past two decades. It relies on the assumption that stellar absorption lines are similar in shape. Although this assumption is simplistic, LSD provides a good model for intensity spectra and likewise an estimate for their Doppler shift. We present the Multi-Mask Least-Squares Deconvolution (MM-LSD) RV extraction pipeline which extracts the radial velocity from two-dimensional echelle-order spectra using LSD with multiple tailored masks after continuum normalisation and telluric absorption line correction. The flexibility of LSD allows to exclude spectral lines or pixels at will, providing a means to exclude variable lines or pixels affected by instrumental problems. The MM-LSD pipeline was tested on HARPS-N data for the Sun and selected well-observed stars with 5.7 < Vmag < 12.6. For FGK-type stars with median signal-to-noise above 100, the pipeline delivered RV time series with on average 12 per cent lower scatter as compared to the HARPS-N RV extraction pipeline based on the Cross-Correlation Function technique. The MM-LSD pipeline may be used as a standalone RV code, or modified and extended to extract a proxy for the magnetic field strength., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Ground-based, high-resolution spectrographs are providing us with an unprecedented view of the dynamics and chemistry of the atmospheres of planets outside the Solar System. While there is a large number of stable and precise high-resolution spectrographs on modest-size telescopes, it is the spectrographs at observatories with apertures larger than 3.5 metres that dominate the atmospheric follow-up of exoplanets. In this work, we explore the potential of characterising exoplanetary atmospheres with FIES, a high-resolution spectrograph at the 2.56 metre Nordic Optical Telescope. We observed two transits of MASCARA-2 b (also known as KELT-20 b) and one transit of KELT-9 b to search for atomic iron, a species that has been recently discovered in both neutral and ionised forms in the atmospheres of these ultra-hot Jupiters using large telescopes. Using a cross-correlation method, we detect a signal of Fe II at the $4.5\sigma$ and $4.0\sigma$ level in the transits of MASCARA-2 b. We also detect Fe II in the transit of KELT-9 b at the $8.5\sigma$ level. Although we do not find any significant Doppler shift in the signal of MASCARA-2 b, we do measure a moderate blueshift (3-6 km/s) of the feature in KELT-9 b, which might be a manifestation of high-velocity winds transporting Fe II from the planetary dayside to the nightside. INTRODUCTION: The risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is determined by multiple factors including platelet function and turnover. MicroRNAs (miRs) may regulate both platelet function and turnover. We aimed to identify candidate miRs associating with platelet function and turnover in a cohort of stable CAD patients. Furthermore, we retrieved information on binding targets of the candidate miRs to obtain a more comprehensive biological insight into miR regulation of platelet function and turnover.METHODS: Based on existing literature and a pilot study, we identified nine candidate miRs. Subsequently, we investigated the expression of the candidate miRs in whole blood and their relation to platelet function and turnover in 749 CAD patients. Platelet function was analysed using impedance aggregometry, optical aggregometry and serum thromboxane B2 measurements. Platelet turnover markers (immature platelet count, immature platelet fraction and mean platelet volume) were measured using monochromatic automated flow cytometry.RESULTS: Expression of miR-93-5p, miR-126-3p, miR-150-5p, miR-423-3p and miR-1180-3p showed negative correlations with platelet function (p-values from CONCLUSIONS: We identified several novel miRs that may regulate platelet function and turnover, thereby contributing to the increased risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in CAD patients.

The imminent launch of space telescopes designed to probe the atmospheres of exoplanets has prompted new efforts to prioritise the thousands of transiting planet candidates for follow-up characterisation. We report the detection and confirmation of TOI-1842b, a warm Saturn identified by TESS and confirmed with ground-based observations from Minerva-Australis, NRES, and the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope. This planet has a radius of $1.04^{+0.06}_{-0.05}\,R_{Jup}$, a mass of $0.214^{+0.040}_{-0.038}\,M_{Jup}$, an orbital period of $9.5739^{+0.0002}_{-0.0001}$ days, and an extremely low density ($\rho$=0.252$\pm$0.091 g cm$^{-3}$). TOI-1842b has among the best known combinations of large atmospheric scale height (893 km) and host-star brightness ($J=8.747$ mag), making it an attractive target for atmospheric characterisation. As the host star is beginning to evolve off the main sequence, TOI-1842b presents an excellent opportunity to test models of gas giant re-inflation. The primary transit duration of only 4.3 hours also makes TOI-1842b an easily-schedulable target for further ground-based atmospheric characterisation., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

In the present work, we investigate a numerical one-dimensional solver to the Navier–Stokes equation that retains all terms, including both pressure and dissipation. Solutions to simple examples that illustrate the actions of the nonlinear term are presented and discussed. The calculations take the full 4D flow as its starting point and continuously projects the forces acting on the fluid at a fixed Eulerian point in a stationary coordinate system onto the direction of the instantaneous velocity. Pressure is included through modeling. Adhering to the requirement that time must in general be considered an independent variable, the time development of the time records and power spectra of the velocity fluctuations are studied. It is found that the actions of the nonlinear term in the Navier–Stokes equation manifests itself by generating sharp pulses in the time traces, where the sharpness is bounded by the finite viscosity. In the spectral domain, the sharp gradients in the pulses generate energy contributions at high frequencies that yields a −2 slope across the inertial range. The −2 (or −6/3) slope is explained through a simple example and the classically expected −5/3 slope in the inertial range can be recovered from the pressure fluctuations from the full flow field that can be considered a noise contribution at the point considered. We also observe that the spectrum can in principle keep spreading to higher frequencies or wavenumbers without upper bound, as the viscosity is approaching the zero limit.

The future ESA space mission PLATO aims to detect thousands of exoplanets, including Earth-like planets, and constrain their radius and mean density. To achieve this goal, the space based photometric observations are not enough but need to be complemented by ground-based observations to measure the Radial Velocity (RV) of the exoplanet host stars. MARVEL is such a facility consisting of four 80 cm telescope linked through optical fibers to a single high-resolution echelle spectrograph, designed for high-precision RV measurements with a uncertainty of 1 ms -1. MARVEL is build by a consortium led by the KU Leuven with contributions from the UK, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain, and will be commissioned in 2023. To reach such high RV precision, not only ultra-stable hardware is currently being developed, but also a state-of-The-Art data processing pipeline for which we present the first results in this poster.

R.; Zechmeister, M.; Zimara, J., The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states., The Italian effort for ANDES is supported by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Lacedelli et al., We present a precise characterization of the TOI-561 planetary system obtained by combining previously published data with TESS and CHEOPS photometry, and a new set of 62 HARPS-N radial velocities (RVs). Our joint analysis confirms the presence of four transiting planets, namely TOI-561 b (P = 0.45 d, R = 1.42 R⊕, M = 2.0 M⊕), c (P = 10.78 d, R = 2.91 R⊕, M = 5.4 M⊕), d (P = 25.7 d, R = 2.82 R⊕, M = 13.2 M⊕), and e (P = 77 d, R = 2.55 R⊕, M = 12.6 R⊕). Moreover, we identify an additional, long-period signal (>450 d) in the RVs, which could be due to either an external planetary companion or to stellar magnetic activity. The precise masses and radii obtained for the four planets allowed us to conduct interior structure and atmospheric escape modelling. TOI-561 b is confirmed to be the lowest density (ρb = 3.8 ± 0.5 g cm−3) ultra-short period (USP) planet known to date, and the low metallicity of the host star makes it consistent with the general bulk density-stellar metallicity trend. According to our interior structure modelling, planet b has basically no gas envelope, and it could host a certain amount of water. In contrast, TOI-561 c, d, and e likely retained an H/He envelope, in addition to a possibly large water layer. The inferred planetary compositions suggest different atmospheric evolutionary paths, with planets b and c having experienced significant gas loss, and planets d and e showing an atmospheric content consistent with the original one. We present a uniform analysis of transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope of two warm gas giants orbiting K-type stars - WASP-29b and WASP-80b. The transmission spectra, which span 0.4-5.0 $\mu$m, are interpreted using a suite of chemical equilibrium PLATON atmospheric retrievals. Both planets show evidence of significant aerosol opacity along the day-night terminator. The spectrum of WASP-29b is flat throughout the visible and near-infrared, suggesting the presence of condensate clouds extending to low pressures. The lack of spectral features hinders our ability to constrain the atmospheric metallicity and C/O ratio. In contrast, WASP-80b shows a discernible, albeit muted H$_2$O absorption feature at 1.4 $\mu$m, as well as a steep optical spectral slope that is caused by fine-particle aerosols and/or contamination from unocculted spots on the variable host star. WASP-80b joins the small number of gas-giant exoplanets that show evidence for enhanced atmospheric metallicity: the transmission spectrum is consistent with metallicities ranging from $\sim$30-100 times solar in the case of cloudy limbs to a few hundred times solar in the cloud-free scenario. In addition to the detection of water, we infer the presence of CO$_2$ in the atmosphere of WASP-80b based on the enhanced transit depth in the Spitzer 4.5 $\mu$m bandpass. From a complementary analysis of Spitzer secondary eclipses, we find that the dayside emission from WASP-29b and WASP-80b is consistent with brightness temperatures of $937 \pm 48$ and $851 \pm 14$ K, respectively, indicating relatively weak day-night heat transport and low Bond albedo., Comment: Published in AJ, 26 pages, 13 figures. Radial velocity (RV) measurements of transiting multiplanet systems allow us to understand the densities and compositions of planets unlike those in the Solar System. Kepler-102, which consists of 5 tightly packed transiting planets, is a particularly interesting system since it includes a super-Earth (Kepler-102d) and a sub-Neptune-sized planet (Kepler-102e) for which masses can be measured using radial velocities. Previous work found a high density for Kepler-102d, suggesting a composition similar to that of Mercury, while Kepler-102e was found to have a density typical of sub-Neptune size planets; however, Kepler-102 is an active star, which can interfere with RV mass measurements. To better measure the mass of these two planets, we obtained 111 new RVs using Keck/HIRES and TNG/HARPS-N and modeled Kepler-102's activity using quasi-periodic Gaussian Process Regression. For Kepler-102d, we report a mass upper limit of M$_{d} < $5.3 M$_{\oplus}$ [95\% confidence], a best-fit mass of M$_{d}$=2.5 $\pm$ 1.4 M$_{\oplus}$, and a density of $\rho_{d}$=5.6 $\pm$ 3.2 g/cm$^{3}$ which is consistent with a rocky composition similar in density to the Earth. For Kepler-102e we report a mass of M$_{e}$=4.7 $\pm$ 1.7 M$_{\oplus}$ and a density of $\rho_{e}$=1.8 $\pm$ 0.7 g/cm$^{3}$. These measurements suggest that Kepler-102e has a rocky core with a thick gaseous envelope comprising 2-4% of the planet mass and 16-50% of its radius. Our study is yet another demonstration that accounting for stellar activity in stars with clear rotation signals can yield more accurate planet masses, enabling a more realistic interpretation of planet interiors., Comment: Accepted to AJ 11/08/2022

Nearby M dwarf systems currently offer the most favorable opportunities for spectroscopic investigations of terrestrial exoplanet atmospheres. The LTT~1445 system is a hierarchical triple of M dwarfs with two known planets orbiting the primary star, LTT~1445A. We observe four transits of the terrestrial world LTT~1445Ab ($R=1.3$ R$_\oplus$, $M=2.9$ M$_\oplus$) at low resolution with Magellan II/LDSS3C. We use the combined flux of the LTT~1445BC pair as a comparison star, marking the first time that an M dwarf is used to remove telluric variability from time-series observations of another M dwarf. We find H$\alpha$ in emission from both LTT~1445B and C, as well as a flare in one of the data sets from LTT~1445C. These contaminated data are removed from the analysis. We construct a broadband transit light curve of LTT~1445Ab from 620--1020 nm. Binned to 3-minute time bins we achieve an rms of 49 ppm for the combined broadband light curve. We construct a transmission spectrum with 20 spectrophotometric bins each spanning 20 nm and compare it to models of clear, 1$\times$ solar composition atmospheres. We rule out this atmospheric case with a surface pressure of 10 bars to $3.2 \sigma$ confidence, and with a surface pressure of 1 bar to $3.1 \sigma$ confidence. Upcoming secondary eclipse observations of LTT~1445Ab with JWST will further probe the cases of a high mean molecular weight atmosphere, a hazy or cloudy atmosphere, or no atmosphere at all on this terrestrial world., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We report the confirmation and characterisation of TOI-1820~b, TOI-2025~b, and TOI-2158~b, three Jupiter-sized planets on short-period orbits around G-type stars detected by TESS. Through our ground-based efforts using the FIES and Tull spectrographs, we have confirmed these planets and characterised their orbits, and find periods of around $4.9$~d, $8.9$~d, and $8.6$~d for TOI-1820~b, TOI-2025~b, and TOI-2158~b, respectively. The sizes of the planets range from 0.96 to 1.14 Jupiter radii, and their masses are in the range from 0.8 to 4.4 Jupiter masses. For two of the systems, namely TOI-2025 and TOI-2158, we see a long-term trend in the radial velocities, indicating the presence of an outer companion in each of the two systems. For TOI-2025 we furthermore find the star to be well-aligned with the orbit, with a projected obliquity of $9^{+33}_{-31}$~$^\circ$. As these planets are all found in relatively bright systems (V$\sim$10.9-11.6 mag), they are well-suited for further studies, which could help shed light on the formation and migration of hot and warm Jupiters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 19 pages, 15 figures

We present the discovery and characterization of a transiting sub-Neptune orbiting with a 16.20 day period around a nearby (28 pc) and bright(V=8.37) K0V star HD207897 (TOI-1611). This discovery is based on photometric measurements from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS) mission and radial velocity (RV) observations from the SOPHIE, Automated Planet Finder (APF) and HIRES high precision spectrographs. We used EXOFASTv2 for simultaneously modeling the parameters of the planet and its host star, combining photometric and RV data to determine the planetary system parameters. We show that the planet has a radius of 2.50+/-0.08 RE and a mass of either 14.4+/-1.6 ME or 15.9+/-1.6 ME with nearly equal probability; the two solutions correspond to two possibilities for the stellar activity period. Hence, the density is either 5.1+/-0.7 g cm^-3 or 5.5^{+0.8}_{-0.7} g cm^-3, making it one of the relatively rare dense sub-Neptunes. The existence of such a dense planet at only 0.12 AU from its host star is unusual in the currently observed sub-Neptune (2, Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in the A&A journal; comments welcome

Context. One of the long-term goals of exoplanet science is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small exoplanets in order to understand their diversity and search for habitable worlds and potential biosignatures. Achieving this goal requires a space mission of sufficient scale that can spatially separate the signals from exoplanets and their host stars and thus directly scrutinize the exoplanets and their atmospheres. Aims. We seek to quantify the exoplanet detection performance of a space-based mid-infrared (MIR) nulling interferometer that measures the thermal emission of exoplanets. We study the impact of various parameters and compare the performance with that of large single-aperture mission concepts that detect exoplanets in reflected light. Methods. We have developed an instrument simulator that considers all major astrophysical noise sources and coupled it with Monte Carlo simulations of a synthetic exoplanet population around main-sequence stars within 20 pc of the Sun. This allows us to quantify the number (and types) of exoplanets that our mission concept could detect. Considering single visits only, we discuss two different scenarios for distributing 2.5 yr of an initial search phase among the stellar targets. Different apertures sizes and wavelength ranges are investigated. Results. An interferometer consisting of four 2 m apertures working in the 4–18.5 μ.m wavelength range with a total instrument throughput of 5% could detect up to ≈550 exoplanets with radii between 0.5 and 6 R⊕ with an integrated S/N ≥ 7. At least ≈160 of the detected exoplanets have radii ≤1.5 R⊕. Depending on the observing scenario, ≈25–45 rocky exoplanets (objects with radii between 0.5 and 1.5 R⊕) orbiting within the empirical habitable zone (eHZ) of their host stars are among the detections. With four 3.5 m apertures, the total number of detections can increase to up to ≈770, including ≈60–80 rocky eHZ planets. With four times 1 m apertures, the maximum detection yield is ≈315 exoplanets, including ≤20 rocky eHZ planets. The vast majority of small, temperate exoplanets are detected around M dwarfs. The impact of changing the wavelength range to 3–20 μm or 6–17 μm on the detection yield is negligible. Conclusions. A large space-based MIR nulling interferometer will be able to directly detect hundreds of small, nearby exoplanets, tens of which would be habitable world candidates. This shows that such a mission can compete with large single-aperture reflected light missions. Further increasing the number of habitable world candidates, in particular around solar-type stars, appears possible via the implementation of a multi-visit strategy during the search phase. The high median S/N of most of the detected planets will allow for first estimates of their radii and effective temperatures and will help prioritize the targets for a second mission phase to obtain high-S/N thermal emission spectra, leveraging the superior diagnostic power of the MIR regime compared to shorter wavelengths.

The future ESA space mission PLATO [1] aims to detect thousands of exoplanets, including Earth-like planets, and to constrain their radius and mean density. To achieve this goal, the photometric observations needs to be complemented by ground-based observations to measure the Radial Velocity (RV) of the exoplanet host stars. MARVEL [2] is such a facility with the ability to probe a RV uncertainty down to 1 m/s using four 80 cm telescopes linked through optical fibers to a single highresolution échelle spectrograph.

The James Webb Space Telescope will be able to probe the atmospheres and surface properties of hot, terrestrial planets via emission spectroscopy. We identify 18 potentially terrestrial planet candidates detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) that would make ideal targets for these observations. These planet candidates cover a broad range of planet radii (R p ∼ 0.6–2.0R ⊕) and orbit stars of various magnitudes (K s = 5.78–10.78, V = 8.4–15.69) and effective temperatures (T eff ∼ 3000–6000 K). We use ground-based observations collected through the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP) and two vetting tools—DAVE and TRICERATOPS—to assess the reliabilities of these candidates as planets. We validate 13 planets: TOI-206 b, TOI-500 b, TOI-544 b, TOI-833 b, TOI-1075 b, TOI-1411 b, TOI-1442 b, TOI-1693 b, TOI-1860 b, TOI-2260 b, TOI-2411 b, TOI-2427 b, and TOI-2445 b. Seven of these planets (TOI-206 b, TOI-500 b, TOI-1075 b, TOI-1442 b, TOI-2260 b, TOI-2411 b, and TOI-2445 b) are ultra-short-period planets. TOI-1860 is the youngest (133 ± 26 Myr) solar twin with a known planet to date. TOI-2260 is a young (321 ± 96 Myr) G dwarf that is among the most metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.22 ± 0.06 dex) stars to host an ultra-short-period planet. With an estimated equilibrium temperature of ∼2600 K, TOI-2260 b is also the fourth hottest known planet with R p < 2 R ⊕.

Molecular oxygen (O2) paired with a reducing gas is regarded as a promising biosignature pair for the atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets. In circumstances when O2 may not be detectable in a planetary atmosphere (e.g., at mid-IR wavelengths) it has been suggested that ozone (O3), the photochemical product of O2, could be used as a proxy to infer the presence of O2. However, O3 production has a nonlinear dependence on O2 and is strongly influenced by the UV spectrum of the host star. To evaluate the reliability of O3 as a proxy for O2, we used Atmos, a 1D coupled climate/photochemistry code, to study the O2-O3 relationship for "Earth-like" habitable zone planets around a variety of stellar hosts (G0V-M5V) and O2 abundances. Overall, we found that the O2-O3 relationship differed significantly with stellar hosts and resulted in different trends for hotter stars (G0V-K2V) vs cooler stars (K5V-M5V). Planets orbiting hotter host stars counter-intuitively experience an increase in O3 when O2 levels are initially decreased from 100% Earth's present atmospheric level (PAL), with a maximum O3 abundance occurring at 25-55% PAL O2. As O2 abundance initially decreases, larger amounts of UV photons capable of O2 photolysis reach the lower (denser) regions of the atmosphere where O3 production is more efficient, resulting in these increased O3 levels. This effect does not occur for cooler host stars (K5V-M5V), as the weaker incident UV flux does not allow O3 formation to occur at dense enough regions of the atmosphere where the faster O3 production can outweigh a smaller source of O2 from which to create O3. Overall it will be extremely difficult (or impossible) to infer precise O2 levels from an O3 measurement, however, with information about the UV spectrum of the host star and context clues, O3 will provide valuable information about potential surface habitability of an exoplanet., 19 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables; in press with A & A

Ground-based, high-resolution spectrographs are providing us with an unprecedented view of the dynamics and chemistry of the atmospheres of planets outside the Solar System. While there are a large number of stable and precise high-resolution spectrographs on modest-size telescopes, it is the spectrographs at observatories with apertures larger than 3.5 m that dominate the atmospheric follow-up of exoplanets. In this work we explore the potential of characterising exoplanetary atmospheres with FIES, a high-resolution spectrograph at the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope. We observed two transits of MASCARA-2 b (also known as KELT-20 b) and one transit of KELT-9 b to search for atomic iron, a species that has recently been discovered in both neutral and ionised forms in the atmospheres of these ultra-hot Jupiters using large telescopes. Using a cross-correlation method, we detect a signal of Fe II at the 4.5σ and 4.0σ level in the transits of MaSCARA-2 b. We also detect Fe II in the transit of KELT-9 b at the 8.5σ level. Although we do not find any significant Doppler shift in the signal of MASCARA-2 b, we do measure a moderate blueshift (3–6 km s−1) of the feature in KELT-9 b, which might be a manifestation of high-velocity winds transporting Fe II from the planetary dayside to the nightside. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of investigating exoplanet atmospheres with FIES, and it potentially unlocks a wealth of additional atmosphere detections with this and other high-resolution spectrographs mounted on similar-size telescopes.
