We discover a family of surfaces of general type with K 2 = 3 K^2=3 and p g = q = 0 p_g=q=0 as free C 13 C_{13} quotients of special linear cuts of the octonionic projective plane O P 2 \mathbb O \mathbb P^2 . A special member of the family has 3 3 singularities of type A 2 A_2 , and is a quotient of a fake projective plane. We use the techniques of earlier work of Borisov and Fatighenti to define this fake projective plane by explicit equations in its bicanonical embedding.

The prevalent historical model of engineering education is centered on a conception of engineering as a technical discipline. However, engineering students are increasingly expected to develop nontechnical competencies for their workforce preparation and professional responsibility. In particular, ethics is an important outcome of engineering education. Ethics has roots in the humanities and social science (HSS), creating a tension between the technical culture of engineering and its engagement with these disciplines. There is a persistent disconnection between the engineering and HSS cultures, which impacts how ethics is valorised and integrated in the curricula. This chapter explores the dichotomy between how technical and nontechnical learning outcomes are addressed in engineering education and its implications for ethics. Drawing on two studies that were independently designed and conducted in Ireland and the US, this chapter synthesizes the perspectives of educators across the two national contexts. Educators in both countries completed semi-structured interviews to understand their practices and perceptions related to engineering ethics. The interviews uncovered four themes related to the de-prioritization of ethics in engineering education: the weight assigned to ethics in accreditation, the piecemeal integration of ethics in the engineering curriculum, the perceived status of ethics as soft and ancillary, and the lack of faculty training. Based on these findings, the chapter concludes with recommendations to bridge the divide between technical and nontechnical learning outcomes and support the more cohesive and interdisciplinary integration of ethics in engineering education.

The estimation of 6D poses of rigid objects is a fundamental problem in computer vision. Traditionally pose estimation is concerned with the determination of a single best estimate. However, a single estimate is unable to express visual ambiguity, which in many cases is unavoidable due to object symmetries or occlusion of identifying features. Inability to account for ambiguities in pose can lead to failure in subsequent methods, which is unacceptable when the cost of failure is high. Estimates of full pose distributions are, contrary to single estimates, well suited for expressing uncertainty on pose. Motivated by this, we propose a novel pose distribution estimation method. An implicit formulation of the probability distribution over object pose is derived from an intermediary representation of an object as a set of keypoints. This ensures that the pose distribution estimates have a high level of interpretability. Furthermore, our method is based on conservative approximations, which leads to reliable estimates. The method has been evaluated on the task of rotation distribution estimation on the YCB-V and T-LESS datasets and performs reliably on all objects., 11 pages, 2 figures

Many industrial assembly tasks involve peg-in-hole like insertions with sub-millimeter tolerances which are challenging, even in highly calibrated robot cells. Visual servoing can be employed to increase the robustness towards uncertainties in the system, however, state of the art methods either rely on accurate 3D models for synthetic renderings or manual involvement in acquisition of training data. We present a novel self-supervised visual servoing method for high precision peg-in-hole insertion, which is fully automated and does not rely on synthetic data. We demonstrate its applicability for insertion of electronic components into a printed circuit board with tight tolerances. We show that peg-in-hole insertion can be drastically sped up by preceding a robust but slow force-based insertion strategy with our proposed visual servoing method, the configuration of which is fully autonomous., Accepted at IEEE CASE 2022

We prove that the Schubert structure constants of the quantum $K$-theory ring of any minuscule flag variety or quadric hypersurface have signs that alternate with codimension. We also prove that the powers of the deformation parameter $q$ that occur in the product of two Schubert classes in the quantum cohomology or quantum $K$-theory ring of a cominuscule flag variety form an integer interval. Our proofs are based on several new results, including an explicit description of the most general non-empty intersection of two Schubert varieties in an arbitrary flag manifold, and a computation of the cohomology groups of any negative line bundle restricted to a Richardson variety in a cominuscule flag variety. We also give a type-uniform proof of the quantum-to-classical theorem, which asserts that the (3-point, genus 0) Gromov-Witten invariants of any cominuscule flag variety are classical triple-intersection numbers on an associated flag variety. Finally, we prove several new results about the geometry and combinatorics related to this theorem.

International audience; The idea for this book originates from reflections by the editors on the nature and dynamics of emerging research agendas on engineering. The book is based on our understanding of engineering and engineering education as an intrinsic socio- technical endeavor transcending the technical core–non-technical periphery dichot- omy. With backgrounds in engineering, social science, and the humanities, we have been developing and/or teaching courses for engineering students across the liberal arts-engineering divide for decades. During participation in research projects aimed at understanding and reforming engineering education we have published a series of books on engineering with contributions from a broad network of scholars from across the globe. This present book aspires to pull together the various strands of this trajectory of collaboration and to extend it in part by reflecting on the conversa- tions between engineers and non-engineers.

Pose estimation is the task of determining the 6D position of an object in a scene. Pose estimation aid the abilities and flexibility of robotic set-ups. However, the system must be configured towards the use case to perform adequately. This configuration is time-consuming and limits the usability of pose estimation and, thereby, robotic systems. Deep learning is a method to overcome this configuration procedure by learning parameters directly from the dataset. However, obtaining this training data can also be very time-consuming. The use of synthetic training data avoids this data collection problem, but a configuration of the training procedure is necessary to overcome the domain gap problem. Additionally, the pose estimation parameters also need to be configured. This configuration is jokingly known as grad student descent as parameters are manually adjusted until satisfactory results are obtained. This paper presents a method for automatic configuration using only synthetic data. This is accomplished by learning the domain randomization during network training, and then using the domain randomization to optimize the pose estimation parameters. The developed approach shows state-of-the-art performance of 82.0 % recall on the challenging OCCLUSION dataset, outperforming all previous methods with a large margin. For a nonsingular projective variety $X$, the virtual Tevelev degree in Gromov-Witten theory is defined as the virtual degree of the morphism from $M_{g,n}(X,d)$ to the product $M_{g,n} \times X^n$. After proving a simple formula for the virtual Tevelev degree in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of $X$ using the quantum Euler class, we provide several exact calculations for flag varieties and complete intersections. In the cominuscule case (including Grassmannians, Lagrangian Grassmannians, and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians), the virtual Tevelev degrees are calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of an associated self-adjoint linear endomorphism of the quantum cohomology ring. For complete intersections of low degree (compared to dimension), we prove a product formula. The calculation for complete intersections involves the primitive cohomology. Virtual Tevelev degrees are better behaved than arbitrary Gromov-Witten invariants, and, by recent results of Lian and Pandharipande, are much more likely to be enumerative.

We present an approach to learn dense, continuous 2D-3D correspondence distributions over the surface of objects from data with no prior knowledge of visual ambiguities like symmetry. We also present a new method for 6D pose estimation of rigid objects using the learnt distributions to sample, score and refine pose hypotheses. The correspondence distributions are learnt with a contrastive loss, represented in object-specific latent spaces by an encoder-decoder query model and a small fully connected key model. Our method is unsupervised with respect to visual ambiguities, yet we show that the query- and key models learn to represent accurate multi-modal surface distributions. Our pose estimation method improves the state-of-the-art significantly on the comprehensive BOP Challenge, trained purely on synthetic data, even compared with methods trained on real data. Since the introduction of modern deep learning methods for object pose estimation, test accuracy and efficiency has increased significantly. For training, however, large amounts of annotated training data are required for good performance. While the use of synthetic training data prevents the need for manual annotation, there is currently a large performance gap between methods trained on real and synthetic data. This paper introduces a new method, which bridges this gap. Most methods trained on synthetic data use 2D images, as domain randomization in 2D is more developed. To obtain precise poses, many of these methods perform a final refinement using 3D data. Our method integrates the 3D data into the network to increase the accuracy of the pose estimation. To allow for domain randomization in 3D, a sensor-based data augmentation has been developed. Additionally, we introduce the SparseEdge feature, which uses a wider search space during point cloud propagation to avoid relying on specific features without increasing run-time. Experiments on three large pose estimation benchmarks show that the presented method outperforms previous methods trained on synthetic data and achieves comparable results to existing methods trained on real data., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables

This strikes us as not only odd, but also a disadvantage since the pragmatist legacy has much to offer practice theory in the study of organizations. In this paper we want to spell out the theoretical similarities and divergences between practice theory and pragmatism to consider whether the two traditions can find common ground when gazing upon organization studies. We suggest that pragmatism should be included in the ‘tool-kit’ of practice-based studies of organizations. This paper demonstrates a visual servoing method which is robust towards uncertainties related to system calibration and grasping, while significantly reducing the peg-in-hole time compared to classical methods and recent attempts based on deep learning. The proposed visual servoing method is based on peg and hole point estimates from a deep neural network in a multi-cam setup, where the model is trained on purely synthetic data. Empirical results show that the learnt model generalizes to the real world, allowing for higher success rates and lower cycle times than existing approaches.

We present a learning-based method for 6 DoF pose estimation of rigid objects in point cloud data. Many recent learning-based approaches use primarily RGB information for detecting objects, in some cases with an added refinement step using depth data. Our method consumes unordered point sets with/without RGB information, from initial detection to the final transformation estimation stage. This allows us to achieve accurate pose estimates, in some cases surpassing state of the art methods trained on the same data., 5 pages

This issue of Nordic Working Life Studies is composed of four articles that continue and advance the ambition to get to grips with work life quality. From different angles, and based on different research material from three Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, and Finland), the articles investigate aspects and dimensions of working life that are paramount for quality of work.

We propose a benchmark for 6D pose estimation of a rigid object from a single RGB-D input image. The training data consists of a texture-mapped 3D object model or images of the object in known 6D poses. The benchmark comprises of: i) eight datasets in a unified format that cover different practical scenarios, including two new datasets focusing on varying lighting conditions, ii) an evaluation methodology with a pose-error function that deals with pose ambiguities, iii) a comprehensive evaluation of 15 diverse recent methods that captures the status quo of the field, and iv) an online evaluation system that is open for continuous submission of new results. The evaluation shows that methods based on point-pair features currently perform best, outperforming template matching methods, learning-based methods and methods based on 3D local features. Humanistic theory for more than the past 100 years is marked by extensive attention to practice and practices. Two prominent streams of thought sharing this focus are pragmatism and theories of practice. This volume brings together internationally prominent theorists to explore key dimensions of practice and practices on the background of parallels and points of contact between these two traditions. The contributors all are steeped in one or both of these streams and well-known for their work on practice. The collected essays explore three important themes: what practice and practices are, normativity, and transformation. The volume deepens understanding of these three practice themes while strengthening appreciation of the parallels between and complementariness of pragmatism and practice theory.

How can we understand the relationship between on the one hand engineers, technicians, designers, users of technology and on the other hand technological devises, products, and artifacts? In the philosophy of technology this relationship has been discussed extensively. Historically, philosophers have opted for explanatory strategies that span the spectrum from technological determinism to voluntarism. Contemporary theorizing of the problem has tried to avoid the extremes of the spectrum, and opted for a middle ground that leaves room for human agency while still recognizing the impact of technology on human activity. In Science and Technology Studies (STS) the question has been discussed as the ‘social shaping of technology’ and various theoretical frameworks have been put forward that stress the interwoven character of the social and the material, e.g. Social Construction of Technology (SCOT), Actor-Network Theory (ANT), and Agential Realism. Whereas there is general agreement in STS that the social and the material is related there is no general agreement about how the socio-material relationship should be understood. Ontological, epistemological and methodological issues tend to be interwoven in complex ways as STS researches have construed the relationship in different ways. How we understand the relationship has implications for extant notions of materiality, technology, society, agency, morality, ethics, and our ability to come to know the world we live in. This paper discusses the character of the socio-material relationship. The discussion will be guided by John Dewey’s and Arthur F. Bentley’s reflections on Knowing and the Known (1989/1948), as they distinguish between different levels of describing inquiry into the world we inhabit. At some levels of inquiry, we tend to construe the relationship between subject and object, ego and alter, in substantialist terms that render the relationship as one derived from preexisting separate entities, whereas on another more profound level of inquiry, the relationship itself is seen as the producer of difference, individuation, and substantiation. Whereas some scholars have seen the approaches of substantialism and relationalism as contrasting on (post-epistemological) ontological grounds, this paper will argue with Dewey and Bentley that substantialism and relationism are modes of inquiry that aims for description and “…representation of the world itself as men report it.” (Dewey & Bentley 1989/1948, p. 101). Following Dewey’s pragmatist lead, it is important that we avoid dichotomies – also when we discuss modes of inquiry. Ontologizing the discussion about methods of inquiry might in fact prove to be unproductive as a traditional move towards ‘first things’. Instead the discussion should look V-D3 towards ‘last things’, i.e. the experiential consequences of the activities involved in the process of inquiry. The paper will argue that substantialism and relationalism are modes of inquiry that serve different purposes, and that choosing one mode of inquiry over another can only be justified relative to the problem of the inquiry. Understanding the relationship between the social and the material thus presuppose a specification of the problem that trigger the process of inquiry.

En forståelse af arkitektur, krop og læring – og samspillet mellem disse begreber og fænomener – bliver i et praksisteoretisk perspektiv et spørgsmål om at forstå handlinger og social aktivitet. I dette kapitel fremskrives det praksisteoretiske perspektiv, og det undersøges, hvordan det begrebssætter arkitektur, krop og læring, samt hvordan et praksisteoretisk perspektiv kan anvendes til at forstå social aktivitet på denne baggrund. Fremstillingen tager udgangspunkt i et konkret og hverdagsligt eksempel fra forfatterens egen praksis som underviser og vejleder for universitetsstuderende. Først gives der en generel karakteristik af det praksisteoretiske udgangspunkt, og praksisbegrebet bestemmes konceptuelt. Herefter diskuterer kapitlet, hvordan læreprocesser må forstås i lyset af vores kropslige handlen iblandt materielle arrangementer, og i lyset af de sociale praksisser, vi indgår i. Afslutningsvis diskuteres metodiske spørgsmål i forhold til det praksisteoretiske perspektiv.

We introduce a vision system that is able to on-line learn spatial constraints to improve pose estimation in terms of correct recognition as well as computational speed. By making use of a simulated industrial robot system performing various pick and place tasks, we show the effect of model building when making use of visual knowledge in terms of visually extracted pose hypotheses as well as action knowledge in terms of pose hypotheses verified by action execution. We show that the use of action knowledge significantly improves the pose estimation process.

Educational planning has become an essential ingredient in providing welfare in welfare societies. This article examines and criticizes the prevailing logic of educational planning by teasing out an underlying conception of ‘action’. By mobilizing an ethnomethodological critique of this notion of planning the article suggest that a situated perspective on action provides an alternative. Building on this alternative the article draws on contemporary practice theory to unfold how a situated perspective on action can understand educational planning as an activity that takes place in ecologies of practices. Drawing on examples from educational planning practices in engineering the article illustrate how activities unfold in ecologies of practices. The article concludes that this reconstruction is of significance because it helps to make the normativity of educational planning explicit.

Whether one gazes to high-level international politics, the general public opinion, or how we as individuals identify ourselves as contributors to society, the industrialized West has increasingly come to see innovation as its core obligation around which everyone is drawn together in universal appreciation. The widely held imagination of innovation is that of a process by which new developments in science and technology are transformed into new business applications. Higher education and professions are eager to impose their expertises onto and claim authority within the domain of innovation. In the recent two decades, universities and other engineering institutions that are typically identified with technology development have expanded their research and teaching activities towards the business end of innovation. PurposeThis paper investigates the new emergent trend in academic institution building where business and management competencies are incorporated to engineering curricula. By comparing experiences from early career alumni from educations that are results of moving engineering institutions into business, we analyze the consequences imposed by changing disciplinary demarcations within academic and professional engineering knowledges. Theoretical and methodological frameworkThe paper draws upon theoretical frameworks from Practice Theory (e.g. as developed by Theodore Schatzki, Stephen Kemmis et al.), and co-production and sociotechnical imaginaries from Science and Technology Studies (e.g. as developed by Sheila Jasanoff). The paper analyzes how knowledge institutions develop under influence from widely held ‘sociotechnical imaginaries’ and how particular forms of (technological) expertise and new governance principles, like New Public Management, place universities under pressure to reinvent themselves in order to accommodate expectations of higher effectiveness, competition, and economic yield.Results Our results indicate that the efforts to reorganize academic engineering knowledge-productions towards business operate after an accountability principle that at one and the same time improve on the academic institution’s ranking while it presents a challenge to new kinds of graduates who face a professional job market that is ill prepared to adopt their novel forms of expertise. LimitationsThe paper’s point of departure is one Danish setting where it investigates how a group of social scientists at The Technical University of Denmark invented the ‘Design and Innovation’ engineering program in response to the new demands for business-orientation within Danish universities. The upshot of this endeavor is discussed in relation to ethnographic research about the competence profiles of the program’s engineering candidates and how they fare in subsequent employment in industry. Originality/value The paper contributes to contemporary discussions of transformations within the university system by supplying empirical case material as well as conceptual resources for fathoming recent developments in the institutional reconfiguration of the university.

This paper proposes an algorithm which uses the depth information acquired from an active sensor as guidance for a block matching stereo algorithm. In the proposed implementation, the disparity search interval used for the block matching is reduced around the depth values obtained from the active sensor, which leads to an improved matching quality and denser disparity maps and point clouds. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by carrying out a series of experiments on 3 different data sets obtained from different robotic systems. We demonstrate with experimental results that the disparity estimation is improved and denser disparity maps are generated.

It is a fundamental challenge for organizational theory to understand and explain how organizations work: what drives processes of organizational learning and change, and how is coordinated action brought about in organizations? It is well recognized that organizational theory rests on – or implicitly presumes – fundamental philosophical assumptions. Organizational theories are based on ontological and epistemological assumptions about what an organization is, how actors act and learn in organizational settings, and how researchers can come to know about organizational phenomena. But it is less recognized that organizational theory also presumes and express ethical and normative perspectives on organizations. This is also the case in the new branch of organizational theory that has been developed with an inspiration from theories of practice (e.g. Schatzki 2005, 2006; Nicolini 2013; Gherardi 2015). Although practice theoretical approaches have made an effort to critically reflect on the ontological and epistemological assumptions of organizational theory the literature only contains very few attempts to understand the role played by normativity and ethics in organizations (Erden et al. 2014). In this paper I will attempt to discuss how the practice theoretical approach to organizational theory can become more explicit about the role of normativity and ethics in order to better understand organizational practices. I will do this by discussing two prominent early practice theoretical theories of ethics, namely Alasdair MacIntyre’s virtue ethics and Charles Taylor’s ethics of authenticity. I will argue that these two ethical approaches fail to substantiate an adequate practice theoretical approach to the study of organizational practices. I will further argue that practice theoretical approaches might find inspiration in John Dewey’s thoughts on ethics, and that these thoughts resonate well with ontological assumptions made by contemporary practice theoretical approaches to organizational theory. This paper thus discusses the role of normativity and ethics in practice theoretical approaches to organizational theory. My discussion will proceed in three steps. I will start by characterizing the practice theoretical perspective on organizational activity, thereby outlining the ontological and epistemological assumptions of this approach. I will then proceed to discuss the role played by normativity in the practice theoretical perspective. Thirdly, I will discuss how a practice theoretical conception of normativity can reflect on ethical problems in organizational practice. This discussion examines MacIntyre’s and Taylor’s ethical theories. The discussion is concluded by suggesting that contemporary practice theory might look to Dewey in order to develop an ethical perspective that is compatible with its view on normativity.

A sustainable transition of our cities is more urgent than ever. For that reason, many urban development projects worldwide are assigned ambitious visions about contributing to the sustainable transition. However, it seems that the projects often lack ability to realize these visions and to actually contribute to a sustainable transition. On the contrary, the projects seem to strengthen the already unsustainable configuration of our cities. In this paper we will argue that there is no causal relationship between vision and reality in urban planning. With reference to a Schatzkian practice theoretical understand of human activity we claim that people act in indeterminate ways and that we must understand planning and strategy as it happens in constellations of social practices and material arrangements. Based on a study of an urban development project in Copenhagen this article shows that the realization of visions is contingent on the involved practices and the prefiguration of the dominant practice architectures by material arrangements. It is the main argument of the paper, that by focusing on practices and material arrangements we can understand better what happens in urban development projects between vision and reality, and that it is in this process and not the vision that urban development and transition has to happen.

Solid protocols to benchmark local feature detectors and descriptors were introduced by Mikolajczyk et al. [1,2]. The detectors and the descriptors are popular tools in object class matching, but the wide baseline setting in the benchmarks does not correspond to class-level matching where appearance variation can be large. We extend the benchmarks to the class matching setting and evaluate state-ofthe- art detectors and descriptors with Caltech and ImageNet classes. Our experiments provide important findings with regard to object class matching: (1) the original SIFT is still the best descriptor; (2) dense sampling outperforms interest point detectors with a clear margin; (3) detectors perform moderately well, but descriptors' performance collapses; (4) using multiple, even a few, best matches instead of the single best has significant effect on the performance; (5) object pose variation degrades dense sampling performance while the best detector (Hessian-affine) is unaffected. The performance of the best detectordescriptor pair is verified in the application of unsupervised visual class alignment where state-of-the-art results are achieved. The findings help to improve the existing detectors and descriptors for which the framework provides an automatic validation tool.

Based on a concrete practice-based study we discuss how such studies can be an important integrated part of critical participatory action research that spur change from inside a professional practice. We also discuss our roles as researchers (and union activists). We see and explore the potential in initiating changes within a practice tradition. To make local changes in the practices is to change the world. The majority of practice-based studies are analyzing different kinds of practices, but only few studies have engaged in doing action research in a practice tradition. Our paper explores how practice-based studies of professions can become of significance means to promote positive changes starting within the practices. In the paper, we will discuss this research strategy and our roles as researchers inspired by Kemmis et al (2014, 2014) and Eikeland & Nicolini (2011). We will draw upon a practice-based case study about the practices of a study administration unit in a university college in Denmark. The study includes ten weeks of participation observation study and five qualitative interviews, both in the central part and in three local study administrations. Managerial initiated organizational change processes and the digitalization strategy for the work in a study administration failed to recognize the invisible work within the practices. Critical participatory action research can help participants not only articulate work processes, but also to have a better understanding of how practice traditions makes work intelligible. This provides possibilities for action and change. We claim that the practice-based studies can become an integrated part of doing critical action research, and we investigate and reflect upon our stewardship of the practices we engaged in.

It is the aim of this paper to investigate teamwork amongst professionals in engineering consultancy companies in order to discern how teamwork affects the collaboration and work practices of the professionals and eventually their quality of work. The paper investigates how professional engineering practices are enacted in two engineering consultancy companies in Denmark where ‘teamwork’ has been or is an ideal for organizing work.Through multi-sited ethnographic and practice-based studies (Marcus 1995, Schatzki 2002, Kemmis et al. 2014, Gherardi 2012) this paper sets out to investigate how teamwork is being ‘done’ and practiced in two engineering consultancy companies. We bring together our own ethnographic studies of engineering work practices in two Danish engineering consultancy companies. In these different sites we show how team- and project work mediate relations within organizations and how team members experience the impact of teamwork in relation to their professional backgrounds and outlooks. By paying attention to how teamwork is enacted in these different sites we are addressing two research questions:• How does team- and project work challenge relations between employees and managers, and how does this affect work quality?• How is team-based self-management and technology-mediated management reconciled in teamwork and how does it affect the professionals?In our study collaboration in engineering work practices has been studied as ‘field-sites’ in George Marcus’ multi-sited ethnographic perspective (Marcus 1995) and we have been inspired by Kemmis et al.’s (2014) notion of Practice Architectures in order for us to discern the doings, sayings and relating that constitute the practices within the field-sites. In line with Marcus’ perspective we do not intend to use the different sites to make comparisons, but instead we explore how ‘teamwork’ is taken up, reenacted and practiced in different ways in the sites according and in relation to the specificities of the practice architectures and practice traditions that encapsulates the happenings and history of the practices. This allows us to investigate how cross affiliations and overlaps of cultural-discursive, material-economic and social-political arrangements are weaved together and intertwined, but the approach also helps us make visible differences and contrasts in lending ‘meaning’ to the dominant discourse about teamwork. Furthermore we adopt Schatzki’s notion of a ‘site’. Here a site is not only delimited by its physical localization. More generally, a ‘site’ is a locality where something – a social phenomenon like team- and project work – is or takes place (Schatzki 2002, 64). The physical location is of importance in the sense that social phenomena always transpires in objective space-time, but in an important sense the site transgresses objective space-time. The teleological location (or ‘timespace’ in Schatzki’s (2010) terms, or ‘project’ in Kemmis et al.’s (2014) terms), i.e. how actors are attuned to and comports with a phenomenon, in significant ways specify how actors relate to the phenomenon and signify a ‘Verweisungsganzheit’ (Heidegger 1927/2010). This helps contextualize social activity. The production of our empirical material has benefitted from theoretical and methodological framework of Kemmis et al.’s and we use their ‘tabels of invention’ to structure and present our findings. Engineering practices and engineering culture is being (re)produced within sites and through practices that can only be understood properly by reflecting on the doings, sayings and relating of the practitioners. Thus attention must be given to the discursive and historical preconditions of the sites as well as the material arrangements that prefigure the practices. Furthermore it is necessary to reflect on how power-relations and social-political arrangements shapes the way practitioners relate to one another. It is thus the ambition to analyze the sites by using a practice-based lens. This methodology honors the complexity and heterogeneity of the engineering practices under study and lends us practical methods to track and propel our investigations and discern how practices are reproduced to sustain or delimit quality of work. Through apractice-based lens the article sets out to investigate, firstly, how discourses about teamandproject work affect engineering work practices, secondly, how technology-mediatedmanagement is reconciled in teamwork practices, and, thirdly, how team- and projectwork affect engineering professionalism and collaborative work practices. A practicetheoretical framework informs the analysis. Teamwork is investigated as aphenomenon enacted through the sayings, doings and relatings of practitioners inlandscapes of practices and the interconnectedness of the practices are traced throughthe setup of specific ecologies in the sites.

Proponents of the ‘practice turn’ in the social sciences rarely mention American pragmatism as a source of inspiration or refer to pragmatist philosophy. This strikes us as not only odd, but also a disadvantage since the pragmatist legacy has much to offer practice theory in the study of organizations. In this paper we want to spell out the theoretical similarities and divergences between practice theory and pragmatism to consider whether the two traditions can find common ground when gazing upon organization studies. We suggest that pragmatism should be included in the ‘tool-kit’ of practice-based studies of organizations.

In this paper, we present a vision system that allows a human to create new 3D models of novel industrial parts by placing the part in two different positions in the scene. The two shot modeling framework generates models with a precision that allows the model to be used for 6D pose estimation without loss in pose accuracy. We quantitatively show that our modeling framework reconstructs noisy but adequate object models with a mean RMS error at 2. 7 mm, a mean standard deviation at 0. 025mm and a completeness of 70. 3% over all 14 reconstructed models, compared to the ground truth CAD models. In addition, the models are applied in a pose estimation application, evaluated with 37 different scenes with 61 unique object poses. The pose estimation results show a mean translation error on 4. 97mm and a mean rotation error on 3. 38 degrees.
