Proteins carry out the algorithms of life. As such, they play an integral role in Systems biology. Given the rapid development of Systems biology, understanding biological processes at a molecular level has become more important to other disciplines, like medicine, as well. Yet, current didactic methods often fail to teach their students biochemistry effectively. We present the Protein Forge, a Virtual Reality application that aims to help primarily medical students to identify amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, and to teach them how those amino acids are chemically linked. The program follows a predefined workflow: its user identifies amino acids from a naturally occurring protein sequence one after the other. When choosing the right amino acid, the user is presented with an animation, showing the formation of a peptide bond, i.e., the bond between two amino acids. The program was implemented in scenery, an open-source framework for rendering VR scenes. To display amino acids, we developed a rudimentary molecular viewer for scenery, consisting of a data structure to store the molecule data and an algorithm to determine the atom positions in space for a given molecule. - Abstract
Plant traits the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits almost complete coverage for plant growth form . However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. - Abstract
The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS {Mathematical expression} Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, where K2 and K3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

Two-particle correlations in invariant mass are studied separately for like-sign and unlike-sign charged particles produced in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering in a new kinematical domain. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA storage ring in 1994, in which 27.5 GeV positrons collided with 820 GeV protons at a centre of mass energy sqrt{s}=300 GeV. The observed enhancement of the like-sign correlations at low invariant masses is related to the dimensions of the hadronic source. The data are compared to different QCD models where the hadronization is performed with the string-fragmentation model. Results are presented for the first time separately for diffractive and non-diffractive scattering, in domains of four-momentum transfer, Bjorken-x, and hadronic center of mass energy, and in intervals of charged particle multiplicity. The observed source radii do not differ strongly from those measured in lower energy lepton-nucleon inelastic scattering, and e^+e^- annihilation., 36 pages, 10 Figures

The authors present a group of nine patients suffering from mesenteric venous thrombosis, which were treated in three hospitals with participation of the first author. Basic principles of diagnostic and therapeutic procedure are summarized and a shift in the treatment strategy over the last 10 years is pointed out. The patient after a very radical intestinal resection may expect to survive and entertain an acceptable quality of life, provided the surgery is followed by an extensive team care in the post-operation period, later accompanied by the care of specialists in modern ways of nutrition.

Jet production in charged and neutral current events in the kinematic range of Q^2 from 640 to 35000 GeV^2 is studied in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA. The measured rate of multi-jet events and distributions of jet polar angle, transverse energy, dijet mass, and other dijet variables are presented. Using parton densities derived from inclusive DIS cross sections, perturbative QCD calculations in NLO are found to give a consistent description of both the neutral and charged current dijet production. A direct, model independent comparison of the jet distributions in charged and neutral current events confirms that the QCD dynamics of the hadronic final state is independent of the underlying electroweak scattering process., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1 experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard gluons., 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Low x deep-inelastic ep scattering data, taken in 1994 at the H1 detector at HERA, are analysed in the Breit frame of reference. Differences between the average charged multiplicity and the multiplicity of e+e- annihilations at low energies are analysed. Invariant energy spectra are compared with MLLA predictions. 19 pp. (1995)., A leading order determination of the gluon density in the proton has been performed in the fractional momentum range 1.9 · 10 −3 < x g / p < 0.18 by measuring multi-jet events from boson-gluon fusion in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at the electron-proton collider HERA. This direct determination of the gluon density was performed in a kinematic region previously not accessible. The data show a considerable increase of the gluon density with decreasing fractional momenta of the gluons.

19 pp. (1995)., Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of e + e − data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in e − p interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in e + e − annihilation. The measured area, peak position and width of the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the e + e − squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. We comment on the extent to which we have evidence for coherence effects in pArton showers.

20 pp. (1993)., A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2– 10−4andQ2> 5GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

14 pp. (1993)., A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb−1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e+e− → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb−1. The data are well described by the standard SU(3)c⊗SU(2)L⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin2θw and the strong coupling constant αs(S) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields αs(342 GeV2) = 0.165±0.030, and sin2θw = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin2θw at the world average value of 0.23 yields αs(342GeV2) = 0.169±0.025.

In this Letter, a measurement of inclusive muon production (p/sub u/>2 GeV/c) in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadrons at center-of-mass energies from ..sqrt..s-bar=12 to 31.6 GeV is reported. The results agree with the expected semileptonic decays from charmed and bottom mesons.

High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS {Mathematical expression} Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, where K2 and K3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

We have studied the τ→νρ 0 π decay in data taken with the PLUTO detector at the DORISe + e − storage ring, at CM energies from 4 to 5 GeV. We have found 27 events with the τ→νρ 0 π decay mode corresponding to a branching ratio ofB=(5.4±1.7)%. The Dalitz plot and theρ 0 π mass spectrum are analysed for the ρπ partial wave and spin state. Only theρ 0 π s-wave as produced by the axial vector current gives a good description. Theρ 0 π mass spectrum is suggestive of anA 1 resonance. An upper limit on τ±→vπ ± π + π − withoutρ 0 formation is given.

A procedure is described which determines the number of jets in hadronic final states by means of a cluster algorithm. In addition it yields a measurement of the energy and the direction of each jet. The properties of this method are studied using Monte Carlo simulations of different types ofe+e−-annihilation final states. It is shown that in the case of 3-jet events direct comparison with the underlying parton structure can be made. Possible further applications of this method are discussed.

We have measured the reaction e + e − → e + e − at the ϒ Using athe excess of electron pairs over the QED expectation we obtain an electronic branching ratio of B ee = (5.1 ± 3.0) %. Combining this with publishe values of the muonic branching ratio B μμ we conclude that the ϒ is a narrow state with a total width

Using the solenoidal magnetic detector PLUTO, we have measured the total cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadrons. Results are presented for center of mass energies between 3.6 and 4.8 GeV, and in the regions of the J ψ (3.1) and ψ(3.7) resonances. We also present results for the 2 prong cross section in the energy range 3.6 to 4.8 GeV.
