Search

The study of universal critical behavior is a crucial issue in a continuous phase transition, which groups various critical phenomena into universality classes for revealing microscopic electronic behaviors. The understanding of the nature of magnetism in Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors is largely impeded by the infeasibility of performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements to deduce the microscopic magnetic behaviors and the effects on the superconductivity, due to the significant neutron absorption effect of natural $^{152}$Eu and unavailability of large single crystals. However, by systematically combining the neutron diffraction experiment, the first-principles calculations, and the quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we have obtained a perfectly consistent universal critical exponent value of $\beta=0.385(13)$ experimentally and theoretically for Eu(Fe$_{0.75}$Ru$_{0.25}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, from which the magnetism in the Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors is identified as the universal class of a three-dimensional anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic exchange coupling. This study not only clarifies the nature of microscopic magnetic behaviors in the Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors, but also opens a new avenue of systemic methodology for studying the universal critical behaviors associated with magnetic phase transitions in the area of magnetism and the spin fluctuations effects on the unconventional superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Ne\'el temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analysis and magnetic structure refinement, we demonstrate that Co2V2O7 possesses a complicated non-collinear magnetic ground state with Co moments mainly located in b-c plane and forming a non-collinear spin-chain-like structure along the c-axis. The ab initio calculations demonstrate that the non-collinear magnetic structure is more stable than various ferromagnetic states at low temperature. The non-collinear magnetic structure with canted up-up-down-down spin configuration is considered as the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in Co2V2O7 because the inequivalent exchange striction induced by the spin-exchange interaction between the neighboring spins is the driving force of ferroelectricity. Besides, it is found that the deviation of lattice parameters a and b is opposite below TN, while the lattice parameter c and stay almost constant below TN, evidencing the anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in Co2V2O7., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

By performing high-pressure single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements, the evolution of structure and magnetic ordering in EuFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure were investigated. Both the tetragonal-toorthorhombic structural transition and the Fe spin-density-wave (SDW) transition are gradually suppressed and become decoupled with increasing pressure. The antiferromagnetic order of the Eu sublattice is, however, robust against the applied pressure up to 24.7 kbar, without showing any change of the ordering temperature. Under the pressure of 24.7 kbar, the lattice parameters of EuFe2As2 display clear anomalies at 27(3) K, well consistent with the superconducting transition observed in previous high-pressure resistivity measurements. Such an anomalous thermal expansion around Tc strongly suggests the appearance of bulk superconductivity and strong electron-lattice coupling in EuFe2As2 induced by the hydrostatic pressure. The coexistence of long-range ordered Eu-antiferromagnetism and pressure-induced superconductivity is quite rare in the EuFe2As2-based iron pnictides., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1) meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and 0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and paraelectric AF1 phase, and the spin spiral ferroelectric AF2 phase. These excitations are associated with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, which is significant due to the rather large spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Nd3+ (J = 9/2) in the iron pnictide NdFeAsO. The crystal field level structures for both the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase of NdFeAsO are constructed. The variation of CEF excitations of Nd3+ reflects not only the change of local symmetry but also the change of magnetic ordered state of the Fe sublattice. By analyzing the crystal field interaction with a crystal field Hamiltonian, the crystal field parameters are obtained. It was found that the sign of the fourth and sixth-order crystal field parameters change upon the magnetic phase transition at 140 K, which may be due to the variation of exchange interactions between the 4f and conduction electrons., 5 pages, 4 figures

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon densities of states in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 using inelastic neutron scattering technique. While cooling down to 150 K, a phonon peak splitting around 25 meV is observed and a new peak appears at 31 meV. The measurements support the recent Raman and infra-red measurements indicating a lowering of symmetry of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 upon cooling below 250 K. Ab-initio phonon calculations have been carried out for K0.8Fe1.6Se2 and KFe2Se2. The comparison of the phonon spectra as obtained from the magnetic as well as non magnetic calculations show pronounced differences. We show that in the two calculations the energy range of the vibrational contribution from both Fe and Se are quite different. We conclude that Fe magnetism is correlated to the phonon dynamics and it plays an important role in stabilizing the structure of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as well as that of KFe2Se2. The magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 is unambiguously determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction. A long-range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments along the c-direction is revealed below the magnetic phase transition temperature Tc = 17 K. In addition, the antiferromagnetism of the Fe2+ moments still survives and the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition is also observed, although the transition temperatures of the Fe-spin density wave (SDW) order and the structural phase transition are significantly suppressed to Tn = 70 K and Ts = 90 K, respectively, compared to the parent compound EuFe2As2.We present the microscopic evidences for the coexistence of the Eu-ferromagnetism (FM) and the Fe-SDW in the superconducting crystal. The superconductivity (SC) competes with the Fe-SDW in Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2.Moreover, the comparison between Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 indicates a considerable influence of the rare-earth element Eu on the magnetism of the Fe sublattice., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate magnetic order and magnetic excitations in ternary iron chalcogenide K2Fe4Se5. The formation of a superlattice structure below 580 K together with the decoupling between the Fe-vacancy order-disorder transition and the antiferromagnetic order transition appears to be a common feature in the A2Fe4Se5 family. The study of spin dynamics of K2Fe4Se5 reveals two distinct energy gaps at the magnetic Brillouin zone center, which indicates the presence of magnetic anisotropy and the decrease of local symmetry due to electronic and orbital anisotropy. The low-energy spin wave excitations of K2Fe4Se5 can be properly described by linear spin wave theory within a Heisenberg model. Compared to iron pnictides, K2Fe4Se5 exhibits a more two-dimensional magnetism as characterized by large differences not only between out-of-plane and in-plane spin wave velocities, but also between out-of-plane and in-plane exchange interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication, Physical Review B: Rapid Communications

We investigate the structural, magnetic, and specific heat behavior of the hexagonal manganite Dy0.5Y0.5MnO3 in order to understand the effect of dilution of Dy magnetism with nonmagnetic yttrium. In this compound, the triangular Mn lattice orders antiferromagnetic at T-N(Mn) approximate to 68 K observed experimentally in the derivative of magnetic susceptibility as well as in specific heat. In addition, a low-temperature peak at T-N(Dy) similar to 3 K is observed in specific heat which is attributed to rare earth order. The T-N(Mn) increases by 9 K compared to that of hexagonal (h) DyMnO3 while T-N(Dy) is unchanged. A change in slope of thermal evolution of lattice parameters is observed to occur at temperature close to T-N(Mn). This hints at strong magnetoelastic coupling in this geometric multiferroic. In magnetization measurements, steplike features are observed when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis which shift to higher fields with temperature and vanish completely above 40 K. The presence of different magnetic phases at low temperature and strong magnetoelastic effects can lead to such field-induced transitions which resemble metamagnetic transitions. This indicates the possibility of strong field-induced effects in dielectric properties of this material, which is unexplored to date.

KCrF3 represents another prototypical orbital-ordered perovskite, where Cr2+ possesses the same electronic configuration of 3d4 as that of strongly Jahn-Teller distorted Mn3+ in many CMR manganites. The crystal and magnetic structures of KCrF3 compound are investigated by using polarized and unpolarized neutron powder diffraction methods. The results show that the KCrF3 compound crystallizes in tetragonal structure at room temperature and undergoes a monoclinic distortion with the decrease in temperature. The distortion of the crystal structure indicates the presence of cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion which is driven by orbital ordering. With decreasing temperature, four magnetic phase transitions are observed at 79.5, 45.8, 9.5, and 3.2 K, which suggests a rich magnetic phase diagram. Below T_N = 79.5 K, the Cr2+ moment orders in an incommensurate antiferromagnetic arrangement, which can be defined by the magnetic propagation vector (1/2$\pm\,$$\delta\,$, 1/2$\pm\,$$\delta\,$, 0). The incommensurate-commensurate magnetic transition occurs at 45.8 K and the magnetic propagation vector locks into (1/2, 1/2, 0) with the Cr moment of 3.34(5) $\mu_B \,$ aligned ferromagnetically in (220) plane, but antiferromagnetically along [110] direction. Below 9.5 K, the canted antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetism arise from the collinear antiferromagnetic structure, while the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and tilted character of the single-ion anisotropy might give rise to the complex magnetic behaviors below 9.5 K.

We present single-crystal neutron-diffuse-scattering measurements with polarization analysis on the spin ice Ho2-xYxTi2O7 (x = 0, 0.3, and 1). At 2 K, the spin flip scattering patterns are typical of a nearest-neighbor spin ice and the effects of Y doping are seen in the width of the pinch points. At low-T, the spin flip patterns are characteristic of a dipolar spin ice and are unaffected by Y doping. In the non-spin flip channel, we observe the signature of strong antiferromagnetic correlations at the same T as the dipolar spin ice correlations appear in the spin flip channel. These experimental observations have been well reproduced by our Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scatterings. The pressure range was large enough to cover the first-order phase transition into the so-called collapsed phase where the c-axis contracts by about 6% whereas a and b axes expand by about 1.5%. Our main result is that pressure-induced phonon frequency shifts are well explained by the changes in relevant bond lengths throughout the pressure range, including those associated with the first-order phase transition. Specifically, the frequencies of phonons polarized in the ab plane as well as the Fe-As bond lengths change little across the phase transition. On the other hand, the transverse-acoustic phonons propagating along the c direction stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the bonds along the c axis. Nonmagnetic density-functional calculations describe the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective experimental crystal structures. This suggests that there is no need to invoke changes in magnetic moments on Fe atoms to explain the pressure-induced frequency shifts.

We report detailed measurements of temperature dependence and ab initio lattice dynamical calculations of the phonon density-of-states of two Sr based iron pnictide parent compounds; SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF. Although both compounds undergo a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transitions, no drastic change of their phonon spectra is found in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K.. In both the systems the Fe-As stretching modes at 32 meV react to the temperature change and shift towards higher energies with decreasing temperature. Furthermore, we found that in the antiferromagnetic phase of SrFe2As2 at 180 K a peak at 25 meV, due to Fe vibrations, moves slightly to higher energies and become narrower on cooling from 300 K. However we did not find any evidence of softening of low energy phonon modes in both SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF on decreasing the temperature from 300 K in their paramagnetic phase. This is contrary to our earlier observation of phonon softening in CaFe2As2, Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 and Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2. For the sake of comparison, the previously studied Ca- and Ba-cases are also presented and the role of the magnetic ordering on the calculated phonon spectra in these two families of pnictides is reported., Paper has been withdrawn by the author. We report detailed measurements of composition as well as temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in a new series of FeAs compounds with composition CaFe1\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The composition as well as temperature dependence of phonon spectra for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds have been measured using time of flight IN4C and IN6 spectrometers at ILL, France. The comparison of phonon spectra at 300 K in these compounds shows that acoustic phonon modes up to 12 meV harden in the doped compounds in comparison to the parent CaFeAsF. While intermediate energy phonon modes from 15 meV to 25 meV are also found to shift towards high energies only in the 12 % Co doped CaFeAsF compound. The experimental results for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) are quite different from our previous phonon studies on parent and superconducting MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca, Sr) where low-energy acoustic phonon modes do not react with doping, while the phonon spectra in the intermediate range from 15 to 25 K are found to soften in these compounds. We argue that stronger spin phonon interaction play an important role for the emergence of superconductivity in these compounds. The lattice dynamics of CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds is also investigated using the ab-initio as well as shell model phonon calculations. We show that the nature of the interaction between the Ca and the Fe-As layers in CaFeAsF compounds is quite different compared with our previous studies on CaFe2As2., 19 pages, 5 figures

We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results, combined with our earlier temperature dependent phonon density of states measurements for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2, indicate that the softening of low-energy phonon modes in these compounds may be due to the interaction of phonons with electron or short-range spin fluctuations in the normal state of the superconducting compound as well as in the parent compound. Extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonons on a single crystal of CaFe2As2 allowed us to establish a fairly complete picture of phonon dispersions in the main symmetry directions. The phonon spectra were also calculated by density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA). There are serious discrepancies between calculations done for the optimized structure and experiment, because the optimised structure is not the ambient pressure structure but is very close to the collapsed structure reached at p = 3.5 kbar. However, if the experimental crystal structure is used the calculation gives correct frequencies of most phonons. The most important new result is that linewidths/frequencies of certain modes are larger/softer than predicted by DFT-LDA. We also observed strong temperature dependence of some phonons near the structural phase transition near 173K. This behavior may indicate anomalously strong electron phonon coupling and/or anharmonicity, which may be important to the mechanism of superconductivity., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figues Revised version, Final version, Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and the Fe saturation moment of 0.49(5)uB aligned along the long a-axis. With increasing Co doping, the long range antiferromagnetic order has been observed to coexist with superconductivity in the orthorhombic phase of the underdoped CaFe0.94Co0.06AsF with a reduced Fe moment (0.15(5)uB). Magnetic order is completely suppressed in optimally doped CaFe0.88Co0.12AsF. We argue that the coexistence of SDW and superconductivity might be related to mesoscopic phase separation., 4pages, 4figures

Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out on a Sn-flux grown BaFe2As2 single crystal, the parent compound of the A-122 family of FeAs-based high-Tc superconductors. A tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition and a three dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the iron moment, with a unique magnetic propagation wavevector k = (1, 0, 1), have been found to take place at ~90 K. The magnetic moments of iron are aligned along the long a axis in the low temperature orthorhombic phase (Fmmm with b, Comment: Substantial changes have been made based on the results obtained from a new crystal

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=30 K) and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=18 K). Compared with the parent compound BaFe2As2 doping affects mainly the lower and intermediate frequency part of the vibrations. Mass effects and lattice contraction cannot explain these changes. A lattice dynamical model has been used to identify the character of the various phonon bands. Softening of phonon modes below 10 meV has been observed in both samples on cooling from 300 K to 140 K. In the Ca doped compound the softening amounts to about 1 meV while for the Sr doped compound the softening is about 0.5 meV. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states when crossing Tc., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report here first extensive measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon density of states of BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors, using inelastic neutron scattering. The experiments were carried out on the thermal time-of-flight neutron spectrometer IN4 at the ILL on a polycrystalline sample. There is no appreciable change in the spectra between T = 10 K and 200 K, although the sample undergoes a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition at 140 K. This indicates a rather harmonic phonon system. Shell model lattice dynamical calculations based on interatomic potentials are carried out to characterize the phonon data. The calculations predict a shift of the Ba-phonons to higher energies at 4 GPa. The average energy of the phonons of the Ba-sublattice is also predicted to increase on partial substitution of Ba by K to Ba0.6K0.4. The calculations show good agreement with the experimental phonon spectra, and also with the specific heat data from the literature., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Me3+8Ge, being a Weyl semimetal, shows a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which decreases slowly with an increase in 8 from 0.1 to 0.4. However, AHE in this compound remains significantly large in the whole range of 8 because of the robust nature of the topology of bands. To explore the possibility of tuning the anomalous transport effects in Weyl semimetals, we have studied the single-crystal hexagonal-(Mn0.78Fe0.22)3Ge compound. Magnetization of this compound shows two magnetic transitions at 242 K (TN1) and 120 K (TN2). We observed that the AHE persists between TN2-TN1 and vanishes below TN2. Further, we performed single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments (using spherical neutron polarimetry and unpolarized neutron diffraction) to determine the magnetic structures of (Mn0.78Fe0.22)3Ge at different temperatures. Our neutron diffraction results show that the sample possesses a collinear antiferromagnetic structure below TN2. However, the magnetic structure of the sample remains noncollinear antiferromagnetic, the same as Mn3Ge, between TN1 to TN2. The presence of AHE, and noncollinear magnetic structure in (Mn0.78Fe0.22)3Ge, between TN1 and TN2, suggest the existence of Weyl points in this temperature regime. Below TN2, AHE is absent, and the magnetic structure also changes to a collinear antiferromagnetic structure. These observations signify a strong link between the magnetic structure of the sample and AHE.
