Braun, U. & Kirk, P.M. 2023: Die Nomenklatur von Arthrocladiella (Erysiphaceae). Schlechtendalia 40: 269–271. Die komplizierte Nomenklatur von Arthrocladiella wird im Detail diskutiert. Dieser Name und die Kombination A. mougeotii sind gültig, müssen aber erläutert werden. Ein eigener ‚Gattungsname‘ für den Lycium-Mehltau wurde ursprünglich als Arthrocladia eingeführt. Diese Bezeichnung ist aber ungültig (Art. 39.1) und illegitim (Art. 53.1). Später wurde dafür der Name Arthrocladiella gen. nov. eingeführt, zusammen mit einer Lateinischen Beschreibung und Erysiphe lycii nom. inval. (Art. 38.1, a) [Arthrocladiella lycii] als Typus. Die Angabe eines ungültigen Artnamens (Bezeichnung) als ‚Typus‘ würde diesen Gattungsnamen eigentlich auch ungültig machen (Art. 40.1). Glücklicher Weise wurde der Name Arthrocladiella mit einer einzigen (Typus-)Art publiziert, was alle Bedingungen für die Anwendung von Art. 38.5 (description generic-specifica) erfüllt, sodass der gut etablierte Name Arthrocladiella beibehalten werden kann. Schlechtendalia 40: 269–271. The complex nomenclature of Arthrocladiella is discussed in detail. This name and the combination A. mougeotii are valid, but need to be clarified. A separate ‘genus name’ for the Lycium powdery mildew was originally introduced as Arthrocladia. However, this designation is invalid (Art. 39.1) and illegitimate (Art. 53.1). Later, the name Arthrocladiella gen. nov. was introduced, together with an added Latin description and Erysiphe lycii, nom. inval. (Art. 38.1, a) [Arthrocladiella lycii] as type. The designation of an invalid species name (designation) as ‘type’ would, actually, render this genus name invalid as well (Art. 40.1). Fortunately, the name Arthrocladiella was published with a single (type) species, which fulfilled all conditions for the application of Art. 38.5 (description generic-specifica), so that the well-established name Arthrocladiella can be maintained. Comments on the nomenclature of Microsphaera mougeotii as well as Calocladia and Microsphaera are added.

Braun, U. 2023: Neubewertung des Namens Pseudocercospora bonjeaneae. Schlechtendalia 40: 278–279. Der Name Cercospora bonjeaneae hat sich als ungültig erwiesen [Art. 36.1(a), publiziert als ‚ad interim’], so dass die Kombination Pseudocercospora bonjeaneae ebenfalls nicht gültig ist [Art. 6.1]. Darüber hinaus erfüllt der Name P. bonjeaneae nicht die Bedingungen für eine gültige Einführung einer neuen Art [Art. 40.1]. Ein zweiter Name, der im Zusammenhang mit dieser Art steht, Cercospora bonjeaneae-rectae, ist jedoch verfügbar. Hofbauer, W. K. & Braun, U. 2023: Neufunden von Mehltauarten aus Österreich und Italien. Schlechtendalia 40: 272–277. Erysiphe salmonii wird für Österreich/Nordtirol auf Fraxinus excelsior und Italien auf F. ornus angegeben. Sawadaea polyfida wurde auf Acer palmatum in Österreich gesammelt. Das ist die erste Angabe dieser Art für Österreich. Weiterhin ist Podosphaera ampla in Österreich auf Prunus cerasifera und in Italien auf P. cerasifera and P. spinosa gefunden worden., Hofbauer, W. Die Nomenklatur von Cercosporella smyrnii (nom. inval., Art. 36.1, a) und Pseudocercosporella smyrnii (nom. inval., Art. 40.7) wird diskutiert. Die blattfleckenbildende Pseudocercosporella auf Smyrnium olusatrum wird unter dem Namen P. smyrnii-olusatri sp. nov. validiert., Braun, U. 2023: The nomenclature of Pseudocercosporella smyrnii. Schlechtendalia 40: 1–2. The nomenclature of the names Cercosporella smyrnii (nom. inval., Art. 36.1, a) and Pseudocercosporella smyrnii (nom. inval., Art. 40.7) is discussed. The leaf-spotting Pseudocercosporella on Smyrnium olusatrum is validated under the name P. smyrnii-olusatri sp. nov.

Bergera koenigii L., commonly known as the curry tree, belongs to the family Rutaceae (Singh et al., 2014). Its leaves are used as a spice for flavor in Indian cuisine and are a good source of vitamins and antioxidants (Rao et al., 2011). In March 2023, powdery mildew was observed on the young leaves of a potted B. koenigii plant in Raleigh, North Carolina (Fig. 1). The incidence of the disease on the plant was 30–40%; the mycelium mostly present on the adaxial surface. Hyphal appressoria were lobed, the foot cells of the conidiophores ranged from 23 to 60 μm in length. Hyaline conidia were formed singly, ellipsoid to cylindrical, without fibrosin bodies. The size of the conidia (n = 40) ranged from 14–38 × 11–18 μm, germ tubes were terminal. Mature chasmothecia were dark brown, globose, 92–100 μm in diameter, with most appendages unbranched, except one appendage with loosely dichotomously branched apex, tips of the ultimate branchlets straight. Each chasmothecium contained up to six asci that were broad ellipsoid-obovoid, with a short stalk. Each ascus contained four to six ellipsoid to ovoid amber-coloured ascospores (17-23 × 5–9 μm) (Fig. 2). Morphological features were consistent with the genus Erysiphe (Braun & Cook 2012). A few infected compound leaves were deposited in the herbarium at North Carolina State University (Catalog No. 000024426).

Phylogenetic and morphological analyses have been conducted on powdery mildew specimens on different Berberis and Mahonia spp. from Asia, Europe and North America. The present study showed that collections of Erysiphe berberidis exhibit a high degree of morphological plasticity of the sexual morph, in contrast to their morphologically, rather uniform, asexual morph. In phylogenetic tree, all sequences cluster in a large strongly supported clade, without any indication and support for further differentiation into cryptic species. There are three morphological types within E. berberidis s. lat. that contain consistent differences. Until future multi-locus analyses will be available, we prefer to treat these ‘morphological types’ as varieties. These include Erysiphe berberidis var. berberidis, E. berberidis var. asiatica, and E. berberidis var. dimorpha comb. nov. (≡ Microsphaera berberidis var. dimorpha, M. berberidicola, and M. multappendicis). To fix the application of species name E. berberidis, an appropriate epitype was designated, with an ITS sequences.

Recently, the occurrence of E. corylacearum has also been confirmed for Germany. Phylogeny, taxonomy, host range, distribution, and the epidemic spread of this species in Europe are briefly discussed. The conidial germination pattern is described and illustrated in detail. The identification was confirmed molecularly by sequencing the ITS region.

Zusammenfassung: Braun, U. 2018: Taxonomie und Nomenklatur von Sphaeria aucupariae (Mycosphaerella aucupariae, Venturia aucupariae) – eine Geschichte von Verwechslung und Fehlinterpretation. Schlechtendalia 36: 61–69.Der illegitime, homonyme Name Sphaeria aucupariae Lasch, non Pers., wurde im Jahr 1844 für einen Ascomyzeten auf Sorbus aucuparia eingeführt. Die Originalbeschreibung ist kurz und wenig aussagekräftig und das Typusmaterial ist nicht erhalten. Lasch„s Name wurde später als Sphaerella aucupariae validiert. Das ist ein Name, der später im Sinne zweier unterschiedlicher blattbewohnender Askomyzeten auf Sorbus aucuparia interpretiert und genutzt wurde, nämlich für eine häufige Mycosphaerellaceen-Art und eine Art der Gattung Venturia. Die verworrene Nomenklatur und Taxonomie der zwei involvierten Arten dieser Gruppen von Taxa wird diskutiert und geklärt. Um die betroffenen Namen nomenklatorisch zu stabilisieren, wird ein Neotypus für Sphaeria aucupariae Lasch ( Sphaerella aucupariae) eingeführt und dieser Name wird in die Synonymie von Septoria sorbi gestellt [Plowrights Material verteilt als “Sphaer. The confused nomenclature and taxonomy of the two species involved in this assemblage of taxa is discussed and disentangled. In order to stabilize the nomenclature of the names concerned, a neotype for Sphaeria aucupariae Lasch ( Sphaerella aucupariae) is designated, and this name is reduced to synonymy with Septoria sorbi [Plowright‟s material distributed in “Sphaer. Brit. 2: no. 92” could be identified as sexual morph of Ramularia endophylla (= Mycosphaerella punctiformis)]. The combination Venturia aucupariae (Plowr.) Rostr. was introduced by E. Rostrup in 1902, and not by O. Rostrup, in Lind 1913, as previously supposed. Venturia on Sorbus aucuparia has previously been considered a forma specialis of Venturia inaequalis, but the latest phylogenetic examinations of the V. inaequalis complex have revealed that the Venturia on Sorbus represents a species of its own. The name V. aucupariae is, however, a synonym of Septoria sorbi, determined by the present neotypification, and is not any longer applicable to the Venturia on Sorbus spp., for which the new combination Venturia orbiculata ( Cladosporium orbiculatum) is introduced. Septoria sorbi Sacc. is the correct name for the mycosphaerellaceous species on hosts of Sorbus s. str. The nomenclature and taxonomy of this species is discussed. Depazea sorbicola is epitypified and the new combination Asteromella sorbicola is introduced. The latter name refers to a common genuine Asteromella on Sorbus aucuparia which was previously erroneously identified as Asteromella trautmanniana.

J. H. Brockmüller sechs Faszikel des Exsikkatenwerkes “Mecklenburgische Kryptogamen. Unter Mitwirkung mehrer Botaniker gesammelt und herausgegeben von H. Brockmüller“ heraus. Braun, U. 2018: Nomenklatur des Pilzgattungsnamens Albigo – eine Geschichte von Verwechslung und Fehldeutung. Schlechtendalia 34: 91–94. Der Status der Nomenklatur der Pilzgattung Albigo wird diskutiert. Albigo wurde von Ehrhart (1791, 1792) als allgemeine Fachbezeichnung für Mehltau eingeführt, aber nicht als formaler Taxon-Name. Dieser Name wird gewöhnlich Steudel (1824) als validierenden Autor zugeschrieben, der jedoch “Albigo Ehrh.” als Gattungsnamen (ohne jegliche Beschreibung) nur aufgelistet hat, die Gattung auf eine einzige Art einschränkte, und zwar auf Hopfenmehltau [Alphitomorpha macularis], und schließlich Albigo in die Synonymie von Alphitomorpha gestellt hat, was bedeutet, dass dieser Name in dieser Arbeit nicht gültig veröffentlicht wurde (Art. 36.1). Albigo was introduced by Ehrhart (1791, 1792) as a general technical term for powdery mildew, not as a formal taxon name. This name has usually been ascribed to Steudel (1824) as validating author, but Steudel (l.c.) just listed “Albigo Ehrh.” as a genus name (without any description), confined this genus to a single species, viz., the hop powdery mildew [Alphitomorpha macularis], and reduced Albigo to synonymy with Alphitomorpha, i.e., Albigo was not accepted as a genus in this publication and was, therefore, also not validly published (Art. 36.1). The first validation of Albigo is by Reum (1833). The bibliographic corrections relevant for the nomenclature of Albigo and A. macularis are presented. Mucor erysiphe, the only powdery mildew species involved in Ehrhart’s (l.c.) publication, is neotypified and reduced to synonymy with Podosphaera macularis ( Alphitomorpha macularis).

The sporodochial hyphomycete genus Cheiromycella is briefly discussed, including nomenclature and taxonomy of its type species, C. microscopica. C. foliicola, a new species of this genus on leaves of Alnus fruticosa from Russia, is described, illustrated and compared with other species of Cheiromycella. Coniothecium chomatosporum var. variegatum is reassessed after examination of type material and reduced to a synonym of Coniosporium spadiceum, a new combination proposed for the anamorph of Hysterium insidens. A key to the species of Cheiromycella is provided.

Rogerson (1918 –2001) sind unlängst untersucht und bestimmt worden. Die Kollektionen, die ursprünglich im Herbarium NY als Ramularia sp. deponiert waren, enthielten Funde neu für Nordamerika, Kalifornien und Utah und einige neue Wirte., BRAUN, U. 2009: Ramularia-like hyphomycetes collected by C.T. Rogerson in North America. Schlechtendalia 19: 73 –75.Numerous specimens of hyphomycetes collected by C.T. Rogerson (1918 –2001) have recently been examined and determined. The collections concerned were deposited as Ramularia sp. in the herbarium NY and encompassed various records new to North America, California and Utah as well as some new hosts.

The conidial stage and chasmothecia of Golovinomyces orontii have been found in Germany on cultivated Limnanthes douglasii. A powdery mildew anamorph found in the Netherlands on Malva alcea agrees morphologically with the Oidium of the latter species as well. Golovinomyces sp. (anamorph) on Parthenium integrifolium is described and discussed. Erysiphe sp. has been found in Germany on Acer opalus, and E. magnifica is recorded from Germany and Switzerland on Magnolia spp. Oidium passiflorae is new to Switzerland. An Oidium morphologically agreeing with the anamorph of Podosphaera aphanis has recently been collected on Exacum macranthum cultivated in a greenhouse, and conidiophores and conidia of a species of Podosphaera sect. Sphaerotheca subsect. Magnicellulatae (P. fusca complex) on Phlox paniculata and Polemonium caeruleum have been found in Germany.

The new species Erysiphe asclepiadis is described, illustrated and discussed. A new Chinese collection of Erysiphe robiniicola has recently been found that can be used to elucidate and discuss the confused taxonomy and nomenclature of this species and other taxa of Erysiphe s. lat. on Robinia spp. Based on a re-examination of type material in connection with the data given in the protologue, it can be shown that Capnodium lygodesmiae must be reduced to synonymy with Ampelomyces quisqualis. The confusion surrounding the name C. lygodesmiae, caused by the occurrence of the hyperparasite A. quisqualis on a powdery mildew fungus with abundant chasmothecia, is discussed in detail. The new combination, Golovinomyces caulicola (; Spolverinia caulicola), is proposed for the powdery mildew that serves as host of C. lygodesmiae.

Oidium pedaliacearum sp. nov. (; O. sesami, nom. inval.) and Podosphaera macrospora comb. et stat. nov. (; Sphaerotheca alpina f. macrospora) are introduced, and the taxonomy and distribution of Erysiphe celosiae is discussed. New host species and new collections of Erysiphe cruciferarum (on Cleome hassleriana), E. flexuosa (on Aesculus hippocastanum), E. hedwigii (on Viburnum carlesii), E. heraclei (on Tinguarra montana), E. cf. macleayae (on Macleaya cordata), E. prunastri (on Prunus cerasifera), E. sedi (on Sedum aff. spectabilis), E. trifolii (on Trigonella caerulea), Golovinomyces cichoracearum (on Argyranthemum pinnatifidum subsp. succulentum), G. cf. hydrophyllacearum (on Nemophila menziesii), G. orontii (on Nolana spp.), G. cf. orontii (on Tiarella cordifolia), Neoerysiphe cumminsiana (on Bidens cf. ferulifolia), Oidium clitoriae (on Clitoria ternatea), O. cf. hortensiae (on Philadelphus coronarius), O. pedilanthi (on Pedilanthus tithymaloides), Oidium (Pseudoidium) sp. (on Utricularia alpina), Podosphaera sp. (on Bergia capensis), Sawadaea bicornis (on Acer platanoides) and S. tulasnei (on Acer ginnala and A. tatarica) are recorded from France, Germany, Greece and Mexico.

The introduction of a new powdery mildew disease on Rhus hirta in various parts of Germany (Brandenburg, Rhine- Westphalia, Sachsen-Anhalt and Saxony) is reported. The anamorph found on this host agrees well with the North American Podosphaera pruinosa. Although the teleomorph has not yet been found in Germany and a molecular study has not yet been possible due to the lack of fresh North American material for a comparison, there is little doubt that the European outbreak of the Rhus powdery mildew disease may be referred to as Podosphaera pruinosa. Morphology, taxonomy and distribution of Podosphaera species on Rhus and other hosts of the Anacardiaceae are discussed in detail.

Mit H. Mühlberg wird im Rahmen der Porträts Hallenser Botaniker erstmals ein gebürtiger Hallenser geehrt, der bis heute der Stadt treu geblieben ist. Am 10. Juni1932 in Halle (Saale) als Sohn des Malers Paul Mühlberg und seiner Ehefrau Hertha, geb. Schmidt, als erstes von zwei Kindern zur Welt gekommen, verbrachte er in derStadt seine gesamte Kindheit, besuchte von 1939 bis 1943 die Grundschule, dann bis Kriegsende die Hauptschule und 1945 bis 1946 die Mittelschule. Nach deren Auflösung war er ein Jahr lang Schüler einer Oberschulklasse im Aufbau und wurdeschließlich in die reguläre Oberschule übernommen. 1951 legte er an der Adolf-Reichwein-Oberschule in Halle die Reifeprüfung ab. Schlechtendalia 16: 61–76.The new species Cladosporium asperistipitatum, C. caraganae, C. leguminicola, C. melospermae, C. rhododendri and C. subobtectum are described and illustrated. Cladosporium salicis is assigned to the genus Fusicladium, C. fusisporum is reduced to synonymy with Passalora chionanthi, and a collection on the Mediterranean Euphorbia wulfenii, originally deposited as Cladosporium sp., is recorded as Fusicladium cf. fasciculatum from Italy.

Type collections as well as some authentic specimens, which may be types, have been sorted out and are listed in this paper. Most of the types belong to species described by G. E. L. Hampe, C. F. Hornschuch, and J. K. (C.) A. F. W. Müller (Müll. Hal.).

The powdery mildew fungus Leveillula helichrysi, so far only known from the Ukraine, is recorded, described, and illustrated from Germany, including the anamorph, which has been found for the first time. Based on the anamorph, the correct assignment of this species to Leveillula could be confirmed. L. helichrysi belongs in Leveillula subgen. Obtusispora.
