Among seven species of the order Eulipotyphla (from southern Gansu and northern Sichuan Provinces, Central China) studied cytogenetically, karyotypes of one talpid species, Uropsilus aff. soricipes (2n = 36, NFa = 54), and three soricid species, Chodsigoa hypsibia (2n = 65, NFa = 66), Sorex cansulus (2n = 42, NFa = 64) and Sorex thibetanus (2n = 42, NFa = 60), are described cytogenetically for the first time. All four species are endemic to China with distribution ranges restricted to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and adjacent mountain ranges. The Ch. hypsibia karyotype consists of mostly acrocentric autosomes and one metacentric pair of autosomes; besides, a B chromosome was identified. No polymorphism was detected among karyotypes of other species, including shrews Sorex bedfordiae (2n = 26, NFa = 44), Anourosorex squamipes (2n = 48, NFa = 92) and Crocidura suaveolens (2n = 40, NFa = 44). The Chinese shrew mole U. aff. soricipes and three shrew species (S. bedfordiae, Ch. hypsibia and A. squamipes) represent autochthonous fauna of Central/Western China, whereas S. thibetanus, S. cansulus and C. suaveolens belong to phylogenetic groups occurring mostly to the north and west from China; therefore, they should be considered relatively recent colonisers. Thus, considering the relationships of the species within phylogenetic groups, our results on karyotypes are in good agreement with molecular genetic data.

The "out of Tibet" hypothesis that suggests an important role of Tibetan highlands in the evolution of Central Asian cold-adapted fauna is a matter of debate. The long-tailed hamster Cricetulus longicaudatus is an important member of both steppe/semidesert Mongolian and high altitude Tibetan faunas. In this study, we analyze the mitochondrial variation in C. longicaudatus throughout a major part of its distribution range, perform molecular dating of the main divergence events, and model its historical range. The data reveal six genetic lineages, which are estimated to have diverged 100–200 kya. Four of the lineages are distributed in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The northern part of the distribution range (Mongolia and southern Siberia) is almost entirely populated by another single lineage; its sister haplogroup is restricted to a small isolate in the Xingan Mountains. Species distribution modeling shows that the southern (Chinese) part of the geographic range of C. longicaudatus was relatively stable over the last 200 kya, while the northern (Mongolian) part demonstrated a high level of temporal variation, contracting considerably during cold glacials. The results suggest that the main center of origin of the long-tailed hamster was located in Tibet and that the northern part of the recent range was colonized through a single dispersal event at the Middle–Late Pleistocene boundary. At the same time, the comparative analysis of the fauna of Tibet and Mongolia indicates that the "out of Tibet" model is not the predominant pattern of geographic range evolution for small mammals.

A study of the karyological variability of mice Apodemus peninsulae in populations of the Baikal region was carried out for the first time. Significant differences were revealed in the macro and micro additional chromosomes of mice A. peninsulae in the northern and southern Baikal regions according to the variants of the B-chromosome system. This made it possible to refer them to different populations with their own history of origin. The results of the work confirm that, upon cytogenetic differentiation of populations of A. peninsulae, of decisive importance are the variations in the number of micro B chromosomes.

Shrews occupy the lower extreme of the seven orders of magnitude mammals range in size. Their hearts are large relative to body weight and heart rate can exceed a thousand beats a minute. To investigate whether cardiac traits that are typical mammalian scale to these extremes, we assessed the heart of three species of shrew (genusSorex) following the sequential segmental analysis developed for human hearts. Using micro-computed tomography we describe the overall structure and find, in agreement with previous studies, a large and elongate ventricle. The atrial and ventricular septums and the atrioventricular and arterial valves are typically mammalian. The ventricular walls comprise mostly compact myocardium and especially the right ventricle has few trabeculations on the luminal side. A developmental process of compaction is thought to reduce trabeculations in mammals, but in embryonic shrews the volume of trabeculations increase for every gestational stage, only slower than the compact volume. By expression of Hcn4, we identify a sinus node and an atrioventricular conduction axis which is continuous with the ventricular septal crest. Outstanding traits include pulmonary venous sleeve myocardium that reaches farther into the lungs than in any other mammals. Typical proportions of coronary arteries-to-aorta do not scale and the shrew coronary arteries are proportionally enormous, presumably to avoid the high resistance to blood flow of narrow vessels. In conclusion, most cardiac traits do scale to the miniscule shrews. The shrew heart, nevertheless, stands out by its relative size, elongation, proportionally large coronary vessels, and extent of pulmonary venous myocardium.

Chromosome sets of eight Apodemus peninsulae individuals captured in Gansu Province (Lianhuashan Natural Reserve) were studied for the first time in 2012. Chromosome sets of mice contained from 55 to 62 chromosomes and included 48 A chromosomes and 7–14 additional B chromosomes of different morphologies.

A range-wide phylogeographic study of the common shrew Sorex araneus was performed using the concatenation of cytb and ND2 mitochondrial genes. The data support two major lineages, one of which (European haplogroup) is distributed continuously from West Europe to West Siberia; the other (Siberian haplogroup) is found in two non-adjacent areas: in central Siberia and in southern Finland and Karelia. Several smaller subclades (East European, Balkan, and West Siberian) were identified within the European lineage. Ancestral area reconstructions were performed under the maximum parsimony criterion using the algorithm that was designed to analyze landmark data. The results suggest that the last common ancestor of the common shrew inhabited the Balkans or the Danubian-Carpathian area. The results of demographic analyses are consistent with the hypothesis of recent expansion throughout the entire distribution range. The genetic diversity indices and the expansion time estimates were higher in the western part of the range. Cumulatively, these findings support the hypothesis that during the Last Glacial Maximum, the range of the common shrew was restricted to a single refugium in Southeastern Europe.

Adrenal glands are the major organs releasing catecholamines and regulating our stress response. The mechanisms balancing generation of adrenergic chromaffin cells and protecting against neuroblastoma tumors are still enigmatic. Here we revealed that serotonin (5HT) controls the numbers of chromaffin cells by acting upon their immediate progenitor “bridge” cells via 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3A (HTR3A), and the aggressive HTR3Ahigh human neuroblastoma cell lines reduce proliferation in response to HTR3A-specific agonists. In embryos (in vivo), the physiological increase of 5HT caused a prolongation of the cell cycle in “bridge” progenitors leading to a smaller chromaffin population and changing the balance of hormones and behavioral patterns in adulthood. These behavioral effects and smaller adrenals were mirrored in the progeny of pregnant female mice subjected to experimental stress, suggesting a maternal-fetal link that controls developmental adaptations. Finally, these results corresponded to a size-distribution of adrenals found in wild rodents with different coping strategies.

The first genetic study of the holotype of the Gansu short-tailed shrew, Blarinella griselda Thomas, 1912, is presented. The mitochondrial analysis demonstrated that the type specimen of B. griselda is close to several recently collected specimens from southern Gansu, northern Sichuan and Shaanxi, which are highly distinct from the two species of Asiatic short-tailed shrews of southern Sichuan, Yunnan, and Vietnam, B. quadraticauda and B. wardi. Our analysis of four nuclear genes supported the placement of B. griselda as sister to B. quadraticauda / B. wardi, with the level of divergence between these two clades corresponding to that among genera of Soricinae. A new generic name, Parablarinella, is proposed for the Gansu short-tailed shrew. Karyotypes of Parablarinella griselda (2n = 49, NFa = 50) and B. quadraticauda (2n = 49, NFa = 62) from southern Gansu are described. The tribal affinities of Blarinellini and Blarinini are discussed.

Fauna of small mammals of southern Gansu have been studied in three key areas: Lianhuashan Nature Reserve, Taizishan Nature Reserve, and the vicinity of Goin Ba and Lang Mu Monastery. All the key areas are associated with different altitudinal belts and, therefore, with different vegetation types. Altogether, 22 species of small mammals have been found. Among them were ten species of the order Eulipotyphla, two species of the order Lagomorpha, and ten species of Rodenta. The habitat distribution and morphometric characteristics of all species found have been analyzed. Molecular diagnostics as based on mitochondrial gene cytochrome b (cytb) and a karyological analysis were also performed. Using these methods, we revealed several new forms of small mammals. The most interesting was the finding of the Chinese dormouse Chaetocauda sichuanensis Wang, 1985. This was only the sixth report of this species, which had not been recorded earlier in Gansu Province. The small mammals were divided into three faunistic groups according to the species distribution patterns. The first group includes species the distributions of which are mainly confined to the south of Gansu and to Sichuan. The species that live in woodlands on both the eastern and southern slopes of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau were assigned to the second group. The third group includes species with wider ranges, which are not limited to the slopes of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau.

First data on morphological and mitochondrial variation in the long-tailed hamster Cricetulus longicaudatus is presented. In contrast to genetically monomorphic populations of Mongolia and Tuva, the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetian Plateau was found to harbor several divergent mtDNA lineages. This pattern suggests a recent expansion of the long-tailed hamster to the northern part of its recent range, which started from Tibet, presumably, in the late Middle Pleistocene. Several populations from the northern edge of the species range were found to be morphologically but not genetically distinct. The apparent disagreement between genetic and morphological data can be explained by rapid morphological evolution in peripheral isolates.

Thirty-year studies of populations of eight shrew species in the Middle Yenisei taiga have shown that at the late 20th century the population dynamics had a pronounced cyclic character, but in the 21st century cyclic dynamics changed with fluctuating one. The analysis of the dependence of the animal body weight on the population density have revealed that under cyclic dynamics at the peaks of the population, the animal’s body weight is significantly higher than that at population decline, i.e., the corollary from the Chitty hypothesis (the Chitty effect) is observed. In populations with fluctuating dynamics such regularity has not been observed.

Karyotype studies of common shrews in the vicinity of Lake Baikal (Irkutsk Region, Eastern Siberia) resulted in the description of two new chromosomal races of Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758 (Lypotyphla, Mammalia), additional to 5 races formerly found in Siberia. In the karyotypes of 12 specimens from 3 locations, the polymorphism of metacentric and acrocentric chromosomes of the Robertsonian type was recorded and two distinct groups of karyotypes interpreted as the chromosomal races were revealed. They are geographically distant and described under the racial names Irkutsk (Ir) and Zima (Zi). Karyotypes of both races were characterized by species-specific (the same for all 74 races known so far) metacentric autosomes af, bc, tu and jl, and the typical sex chromosome system – XX/XY1Y2. The race-specific arm chromosome combinations include three metacentrics and four acrocentrics in the Irkutsk race (gk, hi, nq, m, o, p, r) and four metacentrics and two acrocentrics in the Zima race (gm, hi, ko, nq, p, r). Within the races, individuals with polymorphic chromosomes were detected (g/m, k/o, n/q, p/r). The presence of the specific metacentric gk allowed us to include the Irkutsk race into the Siberian Karyotypic Group (SKG), distributed in surrounding regions. The Zima race karyotype contained two metacentrics, gm and ko, which have been never found in the Siberian part of the species range, but appear as the common feature of chromosomal races belonging to the West European Karyotypic Group (WEKG). Moreover, the metacentrics of that karyotype are almost identical to the Åkarp race (except the heterozygous pair p/r) locally found in the southern Sweden. One of two Siberian races described here for the first time, the Zima race, occurs in an area considerably distant from Europe and shares the common metacentrics (gm, hi, ko) with races included in WEKG. This fact may support a hypothesis of independent formation of identical arm chromosome combinations due to occurrence of the same centric fusions in different parts of the species range.

Genetic diversity of the genus Blarinella was studied using one mitochondrial and four nuclear genes as examples. The first genotyping of shrews from the southeast of Gansu province (China), which is a typical habitat of B. griselda, has been performed. Molecular genetic analysis showed that Blarinella sp. from southern Gansu stand apart among the other representatives of the genus and can be assigned to neither of the known species.

In Western Siberia, most boundaries between common shrew chromosomal races have been found to pass along the banks of rivers, mainly those flowing in the meridional direction. The races Serov and Novosibirsk co-inhabited the right bank of the Irtysh. The easternmost point of the Novosibirsk race has been found on the middle Yenisei River, while the race Tomsk in this area was only on the right (eastern) bank.

Analysis of the B-chromosome frequency and morphotypes in 160 mice Apodemus peninsulae from 17 localities of the Baikal region, Northern Mongolia, Trans-Baikalia, and the Russian Far East showed that the mice were from five geographical populations. The interpopulation difference was determined by variations of 0–4 macro B chromosomes and 0–11 micro B chromosomes. The B-chromosome number and morphotypes proved to be stable over the past 30 years in the geographical populations under study.

A range-wide phylogeographic study of the tundra shrew (Sorex tundrensis) was performed using cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial genes. The results based on 121 specimens from 42 localities demonstrate that the tundra shrew is divided into five main mitochondrial DNA phylogenetic lineages with largely parapatric distribution. In addition to a single Nearctic clade (Alaska) four Palearctic clades are identified: Western (Northen Urals, Kazakhstan, South-West Siberia), Eastern (from East Transbaikalia and the Middle Amur to Chukotka), South Central (Central Siberia, the Altai, the Dzhungarian Alatau) and North Central (Northern Siberia, Central Yakutia). Date estimates obtained by use of a molecular clock corrected for potential rate decay suggest Late Pleistocene age for the most recent common ancestor of all contemporary tundra shrew populations. Relatively high genetic divergence between phylogroups (0.95–1.6%) indicates that the observed phylogeographic structure was initiated by historical events that predated the Last Glacial Maximum. We assume that, being more cold- and arid-tolerant, tundra shrew underwent expansion during an early cold phase of the Last Glacial and spread through its recent range earlier than most of other Siberian red-toothed shrews. Comparative phylogeographic analysis of Siberian shrews and rodents suggests that evolutionary histories of species associated with azonal or open habitats show important differences compared to forest species. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101, 721–746.

The results of the first molecular study focused on the phylogenetic position of the Gansu mole, Scapanulus oweni are presented. The analysis based on sequences of the mitochondrial cytb gene and five nuclear genes supports the monophyly of the Scalopini tribe including S. oweni and shows that two highly fossorial talpid tribes, Talpini and Scalopini, are not immediate sister taxa. These results highlight the role of morphological parallelism as a potential source of conflict between molecular and morphology-based phylogenies in Talpidae.

Using a large body of observational data on the occurrence ofSorex shrews in boreal forests, we test two models that predict the structure of small mammal communities along a gradient of increasing habitat productivity. Tilman’s (1982) model predicts a humped curve of species richness along productivity gradients. In contrast, we found a linear increase in species richness with increasing logarithm of the pooled density of shrews, which we use as a measure of habitat productivity for shrews. The model of Hanski and Kaikusalo (1989) assumes a trade-off between exploitative and interference competitive abilities, and it predicts that the size structure of small mammal communities should shift from the dominance of small species (superior in exploitative competition) in unproductive habitats to the dominance of large species (superior in interference competition) in productive habitats. Shrew assemblages show such a shift. Though it is not possible to draw definite conclusions about the role of interspecific competition from our observational data, the changing size structure of local shrew assemblages with increasing habitat productivity is a predictable feature of their community structure.

Authors examined frequency of chromosome aberration in somatic cells in sympatric growin populations of bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus Schreber, 1780 and ruddy vole C. rutilus Pallas, 1779 in central Siberia (Yenisei river island, 62oN, 89'E) from abnormally high flooding which eliminated the previous island populations of the species. The frequency of chromosome aberration increased parallel to the population density of island populations of both species in 1992-1994. In the mainland population of C. rutilus in 1994, the year of low density for this highly cyclic population, significaantly lower frequency of chromosome aberration was found as compared with an island population characterized by high density in this year. The result are interpreted as a disturbance of cytogenetic homeostasis indicating an alteration in an organis'm condition in the overcrowded populations of both species under study.

We examined temporal variation in developmental stability measured by fluctuating asymmetry of 10 skull characters in sympatric populations of three shrew species: Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758, S. caecutiens Laxmann, 1788 and S. tundrensis Merriam, 1900 from one locality in central Siberia with a high four-year-cycle of small mammals. Simultaneous significant changes in developmental stability have been revealed during a population cycle 1986-1989 for all three, most abundant shrew species in the locality. The highest asymmetry for all these species occurred in the year of maximal density. Similar high asymmetry was found for the separate samples of two other species: S. roboratus Hollister, 1913 and S. isodon Turov, 1924, collected in a peak year 1989 only. The maximal density in 1989 corresponded to the lowest level of breeding success and developmental stability and, vice versa, minimal density in 1986 was accompanied by the highest level of breeding success and developmental stability. These data suggest that overpopulation caused by high density of various small mammals adversely affects an organism's condition. Thus, developmental stability may be used to monitor possible changes in a population even in cases where direct estimation of fitness is difficult.

We studied temporal changes in the level of phenotypic diversity, measured by the total phenotypic variance for several characters of skull morphology, in two populations of the common shrew Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758. We compared a population from central Siberia having a high-amplitude four-year cycle with a population from southern Finland having noncyclic dynamics. The level of total phenotypic diversity varied significantly among years in both populations, but was correlated neither with density nor with breeding success in either of them. We did, however, find differences between the two populations. When we compared changes in the level of phenotypic diversity with changes in the level of developmental stability, as measured by chance developmental variance (fluctuating asymmetry), the cyclic Siberian population exhibited increased developmental variability in the peak year, which was associated with relatively small proportion of other sources of variation (and genetic variation in particular). In other years, the role of chance variation was less and the proportion of other sources of variance was higher. On the other hand, in the noncyclic Finnish population, oscillations in the level of phenotypic diversity were mainly caused by changes in developmental stability. These results illustrate that not only dynamics of genotype variety, but also the alterations in the level of developmental stability can be of great importance for changes in phenotypic diversity.

Sequences (MRS) distantly related to mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) were found in genomes of a wide range of mammalian species using blot hybridization. The number of MRS copies and the degree of their homology with the hybridization probe varied and did not correlate with the taxonomic position of the species. Nevertheless, within a genus the set of MRS was species specific and reflected the taxonomic relation between the species. MRS were also found in avian genomes and the degree of their homology did not correlate with the taxonomic position of the species either. The origin and distribution of MRS is discussed on the basis of the authors' and published data.
