Abstract

Calcium phosphate (CaP) bioceramics have long been of interest for the unique properties that they exhibit as bone substitute materials. By harnessing the unique bone-bonding capacity of CaP's, biomaterials scientists have made great strides over the past 2 decades to produce novel materials to assist in the treatments of defects caused by trauma, disease, or both. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that the traditional set of techniques used to produce calcium phosphates does not satisfy all of the requirements necessary to meet the challenges of emerging applications. In particular, recent interest in (i) the synthesis of coprecipitated CaP/bioorganic composites and (ii) the investigation of the mechanisms of biomineralization has highlighted the need for new methods to control pH and CaP mass yield.

Abstract

Apatite nanocrystals, which mimic the dimensions of natural bone mineral, were electrosprayed on glass substrates, as a suitable synthetic biomedical material for osteoblast outgrowth was explored. A variety of topographic patterns were deposited and the influence of these designs on osteoblast alignment and cell differentiation was investigated. Patterned cell growth and enhanced cell differentiation were seen. Osteoblasts were also cultured on apatite nanocrystals chemically modified with either carbonate or silicon ions. Enhanced cell proliferation and early formation of mineral nodules were observed on apatite nanocrystals with silicon addition. This work highlights the importance of the combined effects of surface topography and surface chemistry in the guidance of cell behaviour.

Abstract

Eight CoCrX(X=Pt,Ta,Ni) films with the same configuration of CoCrX(50 nm)/ Cr(200 nm)/polyimide were selected to investigate the effect of the substrate temperature (Ts) on the structural and magnetic properties. Special attention is paid to the hysteresis loss measurements. In general, a higher Ts tends to increase the Ms, Kl and the hysteresis loss parameters, and to reduce the OR// and S* values. The addition of Pt, Ta or Ni elements into Co-Cr film favours an increase in Ms and He// as well as a reduction in S* in varying degrees. It was found that the change in magnetic properties with respect to Ts for CoCiTa and CoCrPt films is quite different from that for CoCr and CoCrNi films.

Abstract

The use of fully hydrated hydrogels in the body has been well established. The forces a hydrogel generates on swelling when it is placed in a constrained space were investigated with a view to providing a mechanism for fixing a prosthesis in the intramedullary cavity. A cross-linked poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [p(HEMA)] hydrogel was investigated as a potential material. In vitro mechanical tests were carried out to determine the stresses generated in the p(HEMA) when it was placed in water and not allowed to swell. Pull out loads of up to 375 N indicated that the system could be used successfully in vivo. Consequently, the material was placed intraosseously at two sites in a rabbit animal model, in the mid-shaft (diaphysis) and the lower end (metaphysis) of the femur. Histological examination showed there was no adverse bone response; bone was growing from the endosteal surface up to and into the hydrogel in the diaphyseal implants and surrounded the hydrogel in the metaphysis. As a result of the shape and size variations in the rabbit femur, in vivo mechanical tests were found to give lower values than those obtained in vitro.
