Abstract

Scientific studies have demonstrated the usefulness of benthic foraminifera as bioindicators to assess the health of marine, coastal, and transitional ecosystems. Similar to macrofauna, these organisms are reliable proxies for biomonitoring. Despite recent scientific advances, Brazilian official monitoring plans using biotic indices on coastal and ocean environments with soft sediment areas remain mostly restricted to a few types of organisms. Therefore, to include benthic foraminifera in Brazilian biomonitoring routines regulated by national environmental guidelines and standards, the paper presents the challenges, which must be overcome, some recommendations and steps to move forward to implement foraminifera as bioindicators in biomonitoring routines. In light of it, it is essential to consider the contribution of the Brazilian foraminiferal research in this implementation process, improving ecological quality indices, adapting methods, and applying genetics tools. This paper is a step in this direction, which aims to strengthen the role of benthic foraminifera as a reliable tool in Brazilian biomonitoring.

Abstract

Pain is the primary reason for admission to the Emergency Department (ED). However, the management of pain in this setting is often inadequate because of opiophagia, fear of excessive sedation, and fear of compromising an adequate clinical assessment.An intersociety consensus conference was held in 2010 on the assessment and treatment of pain in the emergency setting. This report is the Italian Intersociety recommendations on pain management in the emergency department setting.The list of level A recommendations includes: 1) use of IV acetaminophen for opioid sparing properties and reduction of opioid related adverse events; 2) ketamine-midazolam combination preferred over fentanyl-midazolam fentanyl-propofol in pediatric patients; 3) boluses of ketamine IV (particularly in the population under the age of 2 years and over the age of 13) can lead to impairment of the upper airways, including the onset of laryngospasm, requiring specific expertise and skills for administration; 4) the use of ketamine increases the potential risk of psychomotor agitation, which can happen in up to 30% of adult patients (this peculiar side effect can be significantly reduced by concomitant systemic use of benzodiazepines); 5) for shoulder dislocations and fractures of the upper limbs, the performance of brachial plexus block reduces the time spent in ED compared to sedation; 6) pain relief and the use of opioids in patients with acute abdominal pain do not increase the risk of error in the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway in adults; 7) in newborns, the administration of sucrose reduces behavioural responses to blood sampling from a heel puncture; 8) in newborns, breastfeeding or formula feeding during the procedure reduces the measures of distress; 9) in pediatric patients, non-pharmacological techniques such as distraction, hypnosis and cognitive-behavioural interventions reduce procedural pain caused by the use of needles; 10) in pediatric patients, preventive application of eutectic mixtures of prilocaine and lidocaine allows arterial and venous samples to be taken in optimum conditions; 11) in pediatric patients, the combination of hypnotics (midazolam) and N2O is effective for procedural pain, but may be accompanied by loss of consciousness.The diagnostic-therapeutic pathway of pain management in emergency should be implemented, through further interdisciplinary trials, in order to improve the EBM level of specific guidelines.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a project in order to verify -without the need of knowing the distance CERN-Gran Sasso- the discovery made by the OPERA Collaboration concerning the speed of the CERN neutrinos. The project consists of two parts. A simple one and a less simple one. Both have the great advantage of being totally independent of the knowledge of the distance, ≃ 732 km, between the two Labs, CERN and LNGS, where the neutrinos are produced and detected, respectively. The "simple" version of this project is based on the high-energy horizontal cosmic muons, which traverse LVD and OPERA detectors, thus allowing to cross-calibrate the timing systems of both experiments in a way which is totally independent of the TOF measurements of CNGS. This component of the project is being studied in collaboration with the OPERA group, as the time stabilities of both experiments are needed. In fact it is since a long time that the two groups are engaged with this problem. In this paper we will present and discuss the "less simple" part which allows to establish, at the highest possible level of accuracy, if (v > c) effects really exist.

5. An allelic series of miR-171/492-mutant mice uncovers functional specialization and cooperation among members of a microRNA polycistron

© 2015 Nature America, Inc. All rights reserved. Polycistronic microRNA (miRNA) clusters are a common feature of vertebrate genomes. The coordinated expression of miRNAs belonging to different seed families from a single transcriptional unit suggests functional cooperation, but this hypothesis has not been experimentally tested. Here we report the characterization of an allelic series of genetically engineered mice harboring selective targeted deletions of individual components of the miR-171/492 cluster. Our results demonstrate the coexistence of functional cooperation and specialization among members of this cluster, identify a previously undescribed function for the miR-17 seed family in controlling axial patterning in vertebrates and show that loss of miR-19 selectively impairs Myc-driven tumorigenesis in two models of human cancer. By integrating phenotypic analysis and gene expression profiling, we provide a genome-wide view of how the components of a polycistronic miRNA cluster affect gene expression in vivo. The reagents and data sets reported here will accelerate exploration of the complex biological functions of this important miRNA cluster.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Diabetic patients have increased interstitial myocardial fibrosis on histological examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T(1) mapping is a previously validated imaging technique that can quantify the burden of global and regional interstitial fibrosis. However, the association between MRI T(1) mapping and subtle left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in diabetic patients is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS Fifty diabetic patients with normal LV ejection fraction (EF) and no underlying coronary artery disease or regional macroscopic scar on MRI delayed enhancement were prospectively recruited. Diabetic patients were compared with 19 healthy controls who were frequency matched in age, sex and body mass index. There were no significant differences in mean LV end-diastolic volume index, end-systolic volume index and LVEF between diabetic patients and healthy controls.
