COVID-19 is often associated with long-lasting pulmonary symptoms. Data are scarce about interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients following COVID-19 hospitalization with persistent symptoms. We retrospectively reviewed all cases sent to pulmonary post-COVID evaluation due to persistent symptoms between February 2021 and February 2022 (N = 318). All patients with suspected ILD (N = 44) were reviewed at the multidisciplinary discussion. Patient characteristics, symptoms, time since hospitalization, detailed lung function measurements and 6-min walk test (6MWT) were evaluated. The post-COVID ILD suspected group included more men (68.2 vs. 31.8%) with significantly older age compared to the control group (64.0 ± 12.3 vs. 51.3 ± 14.9 years). Most patient needed hospital care for COVID-19 pneumonia (68.6% of all patients and 84.1% of ILD suspected group) and average time since hospitalization was 2.4 ± 2.3 months. Persisting symptoms included fatigue (34%), dyspnoea (25.2%), cough (22.6%), and sleep disorders (insomnia 13.2%; sleepiness 8.2%). Post-COVID ILD presented more often with new symptoms of cough and sleepiness. Functional impairment, especially decreased walking distance and desaturation during 6-min walk test (6MWT) were detected in the ILD-suspected group. Respiratory function test in the post-COVID ILD group showed slight restrictive ventilatory pattern (FVC: 76.7 ± 18.1%, FEV1: 83.5 ± 19.1%, TLC: 85.6 ± 28.1%) and desaturation during 6MWT were detected in 41% of patients. Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients represent a vulnerable patient population and are of high risk for airborne viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2). Treatment of COVID-19 is still challenging, as no proven therapeutic regimen is available for immunocompromised patients. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of remdesivir (RDV) therapy in infected hospitalized SOT patients. All transplanted recipients (N = 25; lung: 19; kidney: 3, liver: 2, heart: 1) who needed hospital care were reviewed in the time period between September 2020 and May 2021 out of the 945 patients treated at the Department. Case control matched patients receiving RDV (all in need of supplementary oxygen) and standard of care (SOC) were included as controls. Among the 25 SOT patients (female:male = 11:14; average age = 53.2 ± 12.7 years), 15 received RDV medication (RDV-TX), and in 10 cases SOC treatment was used (SOC-TX). Significantly worse clinical score was noted in RDV patients compared with RDV-TX; however, transfer to a higher intensity care unit as well as 60-day survival of RDV-TX patients were significantly worse. All SOT fatalities within 60 days of follow-up were lung transplant recipients (6 out of 19 lung transplant patients). No adverse events were noted related to RDV therapy. In SOT patients, especially lung transplant recipients, with severe COVID-19 needing supplementary oxygen, RDV treatment was safe; however, outcome was significantly worse as compared with nontransplanted individuals with initially worse clinical parameters.

[The Po River Lowstand Wedge (PRLW) of the central Adriatic Sea is made up of stacked alternated clinothems (Type A, B and C clinothems) that show different amount of aggradation of their topsets (e.g. Pellegrini et al., 2018). In this paper, we present novel sedimentological and paleontological analyses and discuss the processes responsible for the observed successions. We detail the character of the clinoforms deposited at the shelf‐edge, discussing the importance of hyperpycnal and storm‐enhanced sediment‐gravity flows in controlling the lithologic assemblage of the different tracts of the compound clinoforms. More in general, we show that, when the fine details of prograding clinoform units are investigated, the processes that lead to margin outbuilding are more complex than usually envisaged. , Abstract Clinoforms with a range of scales are essential elements of prograding continental margins. Different types of clinoforms develop during margin growth, depending on combined changes in relative sea level, sediment supply and oceanographic processes. In studies of continental margin stratigraphy, trajectories of clinoform ‘rollover’ points are often used as proxies for relative sea‐level variation and as predictors of the character of deposits beyond the shelf‐break. The analysis of clinoform dynamics and rollover trajectory often suffers from the low resolution of geophysical data, the small scale of outcrops with respect to the dimensions of clinoform packages and low chronostratigraphic resolution. Here, through high‐resolution seismic reflection data and sediment cores, we show how compound clinoforms were the most common architectural style of margin progradation of the late Pleistocene lowstand in the Adriatic Sea. During compound clinoform development, the shoreline was located landward of the shelf‐break. It comprised a wave‐dominated delta to the west and a barrier and back‐barrier depositional system in the central and eastern area. Storm‐enhanced hyperpycnal flows were responsible for the deposition of a sandy lobe in the river mouth, whereas a heterolithic succession formed elsewhere on the shelf. The storm‐enhanced hyperpycnal flows built an apron of sand on the slope that interrupted an otherwise homogeneous progradational mudbelt. Locally, the late lowstand compound clinoforms have a flat to falling shelf‐break trajectory. However, the main phase of shelf‐break bypass and basin deposition coincides with a younger steeply rising shelf‐break trajectory. We interpret divergence from standard models, linking shelf‐break trajectory to deep‐sea sand deposition, as resulting from a great efficiency of oceanographic processes in reworking sediment in the shelf, and from a high sediment supply. The slope foresets had a large progradational attitude during the late lowstand sea‐level rise, showing that oceanographic processes can inhibit coastal systems to reach the shelf‐edge. In general, our study suggests that where the shoreline does not coincide with the shelf‐break, trajectory analysis can lead to inaccurate reconstruction of the depositional history of a margin.]

Sequence stratigraphy has proven to be an invaluable tool for the analysis of coarse-clastic depositional systems and the integration of observations across scales from reflection seismic to scanning electron microscope. Applications to mudstone-dominated depositional sequences have been more limited, despite the fact that mudstones make up more than 60% of the global sedimentary volume and generally provide the most complete record of sedimentation in a basin. During the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Bob Garrison and his students at the University of California–Santa Cruz conducted numerous studies that revealed the basic sedimentary and stratigraphic framework of the Monterey Formation in California, advancing our understanding of the sedimentary processes at work in these deep-margin basins. We expanded on that framework using direct observations from outcrops and cores that have been integrated with other subsurface data, as well as a wide variety of information derived from paleontologic, chronostratigraphic, geochemical, and compositional analyses to illustrate a sequence-stratigraphic approach to interpreting fine-grained rocks and their associated depositional systems in these settings. These were some of the earliest investigations of mudstone sequence stratigraphy focused on slope and basinal environments. In this study, observations from outcrops in the Pismo Basin, California, provided the basis for developing a detailed sequence-stratigraphic framework for the Monterey Formation, expanding on the broad-scale characterization of Garrison and his colleagues. These outcrops represent deposition during different phases of basin evolution and in different borderland-type basin settings (slope and basin depocenters). Comparison of coeval strata from different depositional settings and locations documented variation at both the sequence and parasequence scale. Variation of parasequence character, in particular, provided a valuable tool for enhanced understanding of deposition and diagenesis in these margin basins. Extrapolation to the subsurface using gamma-ray logs greatly enhanced basinwide application compared to limited, partial-stratigraphic-section outcrops, and it facilitated the lateral characterization of mudstone depositional sequences. These elements served as the building blocks for improved models of deposition in margin-basin settings.

Discerning paleoclimate parameters in depositional systems of the continental interior is challenging because the system response and stratigraphic record of climate are controlled by tectonic processes and are mediated through landscape and hydrological evolution of fluvial lacustrine systems. Climate and tectonic signals cannot be deconvolved from stratigraphic patterns alone but require additional information or data sets that directly record climate or tectonic influence. The Carnian Los Rastros Formation in northwest Argentina provides an excellent case study that integrates an appropriate range of information in a system with strong climate and tectonic signals, being deposited in part during the Carnian Pluvial Episode and spanning the active rift phase of the Ischigualasto–Villa Unión Basin. We examined the stratigraphic and spatial patterns of carbon (C) and oxygen (O) stable isotopes in lacustrine carbonates from the Los Rastros Formation in multiple parts of the basin to constrain paleohydrological conditions and paleotemperatures. Practically all C and O isotope values are characterized by negative values: δ18Ocarb –11.6‰ and –15.7‰ (χ average –13.1‰; 1σ = 1.6) and δ13Ccarb –2.6‰ to –8.0‰ (χ average –5.1‰; 1σ = 2.1), reflecting the latitude, altitude, and continentality of the lake system and its vegetated and humid catchment area. Stratigraphic patterns of stable isotope data from two different localities (Cerro Bola North and Cerro Bola South) show a change from short water-residence time to long residence time and back to short residence time. This contrasts with sedimentologic, organic geochemical, and small-scale stratigraphic patterns that indicate an overfilled lake basin, which is expected to contain a completely open-hydrology isotopic signature. Paleotemperatures calculated from marginal lacustrine carbonates show a warm and quite variable paleothermal range consonant with their continental interior position and with Global Climate Models estimates for high paleolatitudes. Warmer paleotemperatures (linked to aridity, probably smaller lake size, and less thermal mass) precede the Carnian Pluvial Episode, whereas relatively cooler paleotemperatures coincide with the Carnian Pluvial Episode (linked to humidity, probably larger lake size, and more thermal mass). Carbon and oxygen stable isotope signatures integrated with sedimentologic and physiographic information allow us to propose that tectonics, specifically, half-graben tilting during the active synrift phase, dominated over climate effects as the cause of hydrological fluctuations of this system, even during the Carnian Pluvial Episode. Without appropriate stratigraphic-tectonic context, single-proxy reconstructions of continental-interior paleoclimate can be misleading. A robust interpretation of climate effects requires characterization of tectonic effects, geomorphology, paleohydrology, and sedimentary system responses.

Background: Both lung transplant recipients and candidates are characterised by reduced training capacity and low average quality of life (QoL). This review investigates the impact of training on exercise ability and QoL in patients before and after lung transplant. Methods: Searches were conducted from the beginning to 7 March 2022 using the terms “exercise,” “rehabilitation,” “lung transplant,” “exercise ability,” “survival,” “quality of life” and “telerehabilitation” in six databases, including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, CINAHL, Nursing and Allied Health, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria were studies evaluating the effects of an exercise training programme concurrent with lung transplantation as well as patients and candidates (>18 years old) through any lung diseases. The term “lung transplant rehabilitation” was used to refer to all carefully thought-out physical activities with the ultimate or intermediate objective of improving or maintaining physical health. Results: Out of 1422 articles, 10 clinical- and 3 telerehabilitation studies, candidates (n = 420) and recipients (n = 116) were related to the criteria and included in this review. The main outcome significantly improved in all studies. The 6-min walk distance, maximum exercise capacity, peak oxygen uptake, or endurance for constant load rate cycling improved measuring physical activity [aerobic exercises, breathing training, and aerobic and inspiratory muscle training sessions (IMT)]. Overall scores for dyspnoea improved after exercise training. Furthermore, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) also improved after aerobic exercise training, which was performed unsupervised or accompanied by breathing sessions. Aerobic training alone rather than combined with inspiratory muscle- (IMT) or breathing training enhanced exercise capacity. Conclusion: In conclusion, rehabilitation programmes seem to be beneficial to patients both preceding and following lung transplantation. More studies are required to determine the best training settings in terms of time scale, frequency, and work intensity in terms of improving exercise ability, dyspnoea, and HRQOL.

A subset of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) with autoimmune traits—including connective tissue disease-associated ILD (CTD-ILD) and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF)—develops progressive fibrosing (PF)-ILD. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and predictors of longitudinal lung function (LF) changes in autoimmune PF-ILD patients in a real-world setting. All ILD cases with confirmed or suspected autoimmunity discussed by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) between January 2017 and June 2019 (n = 511) were reviewed, including 63 CTD-ILD and 44 IPAF patients. Detailed medical history, LF test, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO), 6-min walk test (6MWT), blood gas analysis (BGA), and high-resolution computer tomography (HRCT) were performed. Longitudinal follow-up for functional parameters was at least 2 years. Women were overrepresented (70.1%), and the age of the IPAF group was significantly higher as compared to the CTD-ILD group (p < 0.001). Dyspnea, crackles, and weight loss were significantly more common in the IPAF group as compared to the CTD-ILD group (84.1% vs. 58.7%, p = 0.006; 72.7% vs. 49.2%, p = 0.017; 29.6% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.001). Forced vital capacity (FVC) yearly decline was more pronounced in IPAF (53.1 ± 0.3 vs. 16.7 ± 0.2 ml; p = 0.294), while the majority of patients (IPAF: 68% and CTD-ILD 82%) did not deteriorate. Factors influencing progression included malignancy as a comorbidity, anti-SS-A antibodies, and post-exercise pulse increase at 6MWT. Antifibrotic therapy was administered significantly more often in IPAF as compared to CTD-ILD patients (n = 13, 29.5% vs. n = 5, 7.9%; p = 0.007), and importantly, this treatment reduced lung function decline when compared to non-treated patients. Majority of patients improved or were stable regarding lung function, and autoimmune-associated PF-ILD was more common in patients having IPAF. Functional decline predictors were anti-SS-A antibodies and marked post-exercise pulse increase at 6MWT. Antifibrotic treatments reduced progression in progressive fibrosing CTD-ILD and IPAF, emphasizing the need for guidelines including optimal treatment start and combination therapies in this special patient group.

To understand the complex stratigraphic response of a coastal depositional system to rapid eustatic rise and sediment inputs, the evolution of the Adriatic coastline and Po River system, during the post-glacial (Holocene) transgression, was investigated. The landward migration and evolution of a wave-dominated estuary was mapped, based on an extensive data set comprising 14 boreholes, 28 core descriptions and 308 piezocone tests, chronologically constrained between 11·5 and 7·0Âkyr bp by 137 radiocarbon dates. Palaeogeographic maps reveal temporal differences in retrogradational geometries and mechanisms that likely underpin shoreline retreat. The Po estuary initially developed within a shallowly incised valley and then spread onto the interfluves. Between 11·5 and 9·2Âkyr bp the Po fluvial system became avulsive/distributive and wetlands developed in topographically depressed areas. The shoreline retreated at a mean rate of ca 10ÂmÂyear−1, between 9·2Âkyr and 7·7Âkyr bp, following a stepped trajectory at the centennial scale. After 7·7Âkyr bp, bayhead deltas started to prograde and partially filled the estuary. The overall stratigraphic architecture is interpreted to reflect the sedimentary response of the coastal depositional system to the main pulses of early Holocene eustatic rise. The influence of antecedent topography, partly due to local subsidence, was dominant at the time of initial transgression. Basin morphology influenced sediment dispersal and partitioning. Sediment supplied by the Po River was trapped within the estuary, whereas coastal sand bodies at the estuary mouth were fed by alongshore currents and by reworking of older barriers. High-resolution age control that ties facies evolution to independently constrained eustasy provides direct data to test models of short-term coastal retreat under conditions of relative sea-level rise, and makes this case study a useful analogue for the interpretation of ancient marginal-marine, retrogradational systems where only stratal geometries are available.

Sequence stratigraphy, typically used for hydrocarbon exploration in ancient strata, can be applied to late Quaternary successions to decipher complex spatial relations among their aquifers. Late Pleistocene-Holocene strata of the Po Basin were investigated using a sequence stratigraphic approach to produce a highresolution model for guiding groundwater exploitation. Because facies tend to be diachronous across depositional basins, facies analysis was done within the conformable intervals of strata revealed by sequence stratigraphy to accurately interpret and map coeval lateral facies relations. Volumetric assessments, sand-distribution mapping, hydraulic characterization of facies, and spatial variations of hydraulic parameters revealed two aquifer systems: The lowstand systems tract (LST) and the highstand systems tract (HST) vertically separated by an aquitard, the transgressive systems tract (TST). The LST aquifer consists of amalgamated fluvial sands (average transmissivity: 3.5 E-3 m2/s [37.7 E-3 ft2/s]) with considerable width (>25 km [>16 mi]) preferentially elongated downstream. The widespread TST aquitard is dominated volumetrically (~57%) by low-permeability estuarine deposits. The HST aquifer (average transmissivity: 5.4 E-5 m2/s [58.1 E-5 ft2/s]) is 5-10 km (~3-6 mi) wide, elongated parallel to the modern shoreline. Sequence stratigraphic analysis at the parasequence scale revealed an almost unprecedented level of detailed insight into aquifer (or aquiclude) dimensions and the complex distribution of hydraulic parameters in the subsurface, showing that similar facies have different permeabilities depending on systems tract. In contrast, lithostratigraphic mapping obscures subsurface connectivity and directional trends and hasminimal predictive power away from control. These insights should be useful for guiding correlation and mapping of the deep subsurface and for hydrocarbon reservoir modelers.

Summary Geological Carbon Capture and Sequestration (GCCS) represents a significant component of the necessary CO2 reductions required to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Given the presence of infrastructure, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs represent useful sites to test feasibility of concepts. However, depleted oil and gas fields typically do not represent the ideal trap-seal configurations for large-scale storage, given the relatively steep nature of hydrocarbon traps, which has led to compromised capillary seals that have experienced geologic time-scale leakage of non-wetting hydrocarbon fluids. As such, it is important to consider fundamental aspects of reservoir-trap-seal configurations that have the possibility of providing large-scale CO2 storage opportunities. Many of these opportunities exist in saline aquifers and will rely on characterizing caprock sequences in siliciclastic marine depositional environments. Such settings have been the subject of study and characterization for oil and gas exploration and production. Here, we present learnings from a workflow of applying the sequence stratigraphic method to caprock characterization, illustrated with data from a number of subsurface and outcrop case studies. It illustrates the types of information that can be obtained from integrating rock, wireline log and seismic data within such a framework.

Reconstructing continental paleoenvironmental conditions (temperature, precipitation, hydrology, and hydrography) is essential for constraining the influences on terrestrial ecosystems, sediment and solute yields to the ocean and carbon cycles, as well as for calibrating numerical paleoclimate models. Making such reconstructions from lacustrine strata, however, is quite challenging because of varying water sources, flow paths and residence times, paleogeographic effects, and eodiagenesis. Indeed, even stratigraphic evidence of fluctuations in lake level cannot be directly interpreted in terms of changing precipitation because of the complex response of lakes to changing input conditioned by upstream and downstream factors. Such challenges can be addressed by thorough integration of paleogeography, stratigraphy, sedimentology, mineralogy, and stable isotope data of lacustrine carbonates within a framework that accounts for the many and convoluted controls on lake systems.

Although general trends in transgressive to highstand sedimentary evolution of river-mouth coastlines are well-known, the details of the turnaround from retrogradational (typically estuarine) to aggradational–progradational (typically coastal/deltaic) stacking patterns are not fully resolved. This paper examines the middle to late Holocene eustatic highstand succession of the Po Delta: its stratigraphic architecture records a complex pattern of delta outbuilding and coastal progradation that followed eustatic stabilization, since around 7·7calkyrbp. Sedimentological, palaeoecological (benthic foraminifera, ostracods and molluscs) and compositional criteria were used to characterize depositional conditions and sediment-dispersal pathways within a radiocarbon-dated chronological framework. A three-stage progradation history was reconstructed. First, as soon as eustasy stabilized (7·7 to 7·0calkyrbp), rapid bay-head delta progradation (ca 5myear−1), fed mostly by the Po River, took place in a mixed, freshwater and brackish estuarine environment. Second, a dominantly aggradational parasequence set of beach-barrier deposits in the lower highstand systems tract (7·0 to 2·0calkyrbp) records the development of a shallow, wave-dominated coastal system fed alongshore, with elongated, modestly crescent beaches (ca 2·5myear−1). Third, in the last 2000years, the development of faster accreting and more rapidly prograding (up to ca 15myear−1) Po delta lobes occurred into 30m deep waters (upper highstand systems tract). This study documents the close correspondence of sediment character with stratal distribution patterns within the highstand systems tract. Remarkable changes in sediment characteristics, palaeoenvironments and direction of sediment transport occur across a surface named the ‘A–P surface’. This surface demarcates a major shift from dominantly aggradational (lower highstand systems tract) to fully progradational (upper highstand systems tract) parasequence stacking. In the Po system, this surface also reflects evolution from a wave-dominated to river-dominated deltaic system. Identifying the A–P surface through detailed palaeoecological and compositional data can help guide interpretation of highstand systems tracts in the rock record, especially where facies assemblages and their characteristic geometries are difficult to discern from physical sedimentary structures alone.

Continental shelves host 90% of modern Organic Carbon (OC) burial and play a key role in the sequestration of terrigenous OC over geological timescales. The efficiency of OC burial in these systems, however, varies greatly depending on the duration of exposure to oxic-suboxic conditions during sediment transport. In this study, we use observations across a wide range of stratigraphic and sedimentological scales coupled with geochemistry data from muddy shelf deposits along the western Adriatic to investigate the relation between sediment transport and burial of terrigenous (land-derived) fraction of OC (OCTerr). Our analysis focused on the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1500-1850 CE) interval, which was characterized by wet, cold, and stormy weather conditions, before the time of widespread regulation and damming of rivers. On the Adriatic shelf, LIA deposits are organized as clinothem: strata that dip gently seawards. The LIA clinothem becomes progressively steeper and deeper from north to south. Basin-scale seismic-stratigraphic analysis and biogeochemical data show evidence of elongated stratal units associated with low OCTerr content in the northern sector of the LIA clinothem, whereas farther south, where clinoforms are steeper, the LIA clinothem exhibits wavy stratal units with limited cross-shelf continuity and high OCTerr concentrations. Based on these data we infer two contrasting scenarios for OCTerr deposition during the LIA: 1) protracted sediment redistribution under the influence of coastal currents with efficient OCTerr degradation prior to final burial in the northern sector; and (2) rapid deposition of OCTerr-rich event beds as a result of flood-driven hyperpycnal flows with limited dispersion across the shelf in the southern sector. The latter scenario of deposition resulted in scattered hot spots of OCTerr burial along the apparently homogeneous western Adriatic shelf deposit. The 350-m-thick succession of the Po River lowstand wedge (Italy) associated with the Last Glacial Maximum (deposited over ~17 k.y) contains stratal architecture at a physical scale commonly attributed to much longer time scales, with complex, systematically varying internal clinothem characteristics. This study investigated clinothem stacking patterns and controls through the integration of seismic reflection data with sediment attributes, micropaleontology, regional climate, eustacy, and high-resolution age control possible only in Quaternary sequences. Three clinothem types are differentiated based on topset geometry, shelf-edge and onlap-point trajectory, internal seismic facies, and interpreted bottomset deposits: type A has moderate topset aggradation, ascending shelf-edge trajectory, and mass-transport bottomset deposits; type B has eroded topset, descending shelf-edge trajectory, and bottomset distributary channel-lobe complexes; and type C has maximal topset aggradation, ascending shelf-edge trajectory, and concordant bottomsets. Type A and C clinothems exhibit reduced sediment bypass and delivery to the basin, whereas type B clinothems are associated with short intervals of increased sediment export from the shelf to deeper water. Clinothems individually span a range of 0.4-4.7 k.y., contemporaneous with significant eustatic and climate changes, but their stacking patterns resemble those found in ancient successions and ascribed to significantly longer durations, indicating that (1) the response time of ancient continental margin-scale systems to high-frequency variations in accommodation and sediment supply could be as short as centuries, (2) even millennial- to centennial-scale stratal units can record substantial influence of allogenic controls, and (3) sandy deposits can be compartmentalized even in a short-duration lowstand systems tract.

Quantification of the interaction between river discharge and tides is vital to characterize fluvio-deltaic systems, to identify diagnostic elements of tidal signatures in the rock record, and to reconstruct paleogeographies. In modern systems, even microtides can significantly influence delta morphodynamics; yet, many fundamental processes, particularly in prodeltaic settings, remain elusive. Here, by combining a unique process-product data set acquired during a flood event of the Po River (Italy) with numerical modeling, we show that tidal signatures are recorded in the open-water prodelta zone of a microtidal system. Based on the analyses of box-cores collected before and after a flood off the main distributary channel, we interpreted storm beds, tide-modulated flood strata of alternating normal and inverse graded beds, and rapid bioturbation. Modeling of the river discharge indicates that, at the peak of the flood, the steepening of the water-surface profile forced by 0.15 m lowering of sea level during low tides generated an 8% increase in river flow velocity. The alternation of profile steepness and associated cyclicity in flow strength during consecutive tidal cycles controlled the sediment load of the plume and, consequently, led to the deposition of tidal-modulated strata. Formation of microtidal signals appears to be enhanced in fluvio-deltaic successions characterized by multiple distributaries and in basins where river floods are out of phase with storm-wave activity. Bioturbation of sediment, which can start during the waning stage of the flow, and erosion by storm waves hamper the preservation of tidal signals, unless rapid burial occurs. The recognition of tidal-modulated strata in river-dominated settings may facilitate the characterization of mudstone reservoirs and reconstruction of paleogeographic conditions during deposition.

The future of sequence stratigraphy depends on stratigraphers making observations with a common method so that physical frameworks can be clearly separated from interpretations of driving mechanisms. Depositional sequence boundary selection is a well-known controversy that could be resolved with objective recognition criteria. Accommodation succession sequence stratigraphy refines traditional methods, using sedimentary facies, facies associations, vertical stacking, stratal geometries and stratal terminations as the objective record of competing rates of accommodation change and sediment fill through time. Observations are placed in context of lateral (transgression and regression) and vertical (aggradation and degradation) movement of shoreline through time, across multiple timescales in hierarchal stacks. The repeating motif consists of a subaerial unconformity and its correlative subaqueous surface overlain in coastal settings by a basinward shift in coastal onlap and strata with progradational to aggradation stacking, then retrogradation and aggradation–progradation–degradation stacking. These stacking patterns are bounded by key surfaces, recognized by stratal terminations and characteristic vertical successions of facies. This pattern is independent of time duration or position on a sea-level curve, but incorporates data resolution, regional extent and hierarchal stacking. Examples from multiple datasets show the utility and objectivity of the method and provide insights into sequence boundary formation.

An integrated nomenclature scheme is proposed to capture the inherent heterogeneity of fine-grained sedimentary rocks at the 102 to 10−3 mm scale and to assist the evaluation of these rocks as sinks of organic carbon, barriers to fluid flows, and reservoirs of oil and gas. This scheme incorporates previous knowledge and the latest field, petrographic, and laboratory observations. We propose to name fine-grained sedimentary rocks using a root term based on their texture (grain size), which is modified by description of bedding, composition, and grain origin. Regarding texture, we suggest the use of “mudstone” as a class name for the entire spectrum of fine-grained sedimentary rocks. We define mudstone as a rock in which more than fifty percent of its grains are mud (clay and silt) size (< 62.5 µm). Similar to the approach used for the description of sandstone texture, mudstone texture can be refined by a “coarse,” “medium,” or “fine” size-range term. Regarding bedding, we follow Campbell's (1967) genetic approach to define laminae, laminasets, and beds, and describe lamina geometry, continuity, and shape. Regarding composition, we propose terms such as “siliceous,” “calcareous,” “argillaceous,” and “carbonaceous” to capture differences in rock composition. The name of a mudstone can be further modified by additional attributes that detail the form and origin of the rock components. Application of this approach to the Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale illustrates the variability typically present in mudstone successions and demonstrates how our detailed characterization can be used to decipher and predict rock properties of economic interest.

Holocene deposits exhibit distinct, predictable and chronologically constrained facies patterns that are quite useful as appropriate modern analogs for interpreting the ancient record. In this study, we examined the sedimentary response of the Po Plain coastal system to short-term (millennial-scale) relative fluctuations of sea level through high-resolution sequence-stratigraphic analysis of the Holocene succession. Meters-thick parasequences form the building blocks of stratigraphic architecture. Above the Younger Dryas paleosol, a prominent stratigraphic marker that demarcates the transgressive surface, Early Holocene parasequences (#s 1–3) record alternating periods of rapid flooding and gradual shoaling, and are stacked in a retrogradational pattern that mostly reflects stepped, post-glacial eustatic rise. Conversely, Middle to Late Holocene parasequences (#s 4–8) record a complex, pattern of coastal progradation and delta upbuilding that took place following sea-level stabilization at highstand, starting at about 7 cal ky BP. The prominent transgressive surface at the base of parasequence 1 correlates with the period of rapid, global sea-level rise at the onset of the Holocene (MWP-1B), whereas flooding surfaces associated with parasequences 2 and 3 apparently reflect minor Early Holocene eustatic jumps reported in the literature. Changes in shoreline trajectory, parasequence architecture and lithofacies distribution during the following eustatic highstand had, instead, an overwhelming autogenic component, mostly driven by river avulsions, delta lobe switching, local subsidence and sediment compaction. We document a ∼1000-year delayed response of the coastal depositional system to marine incursion, farther inland from the maximum landward position of the shoreline. A dramatic reduction in sediment flux due to fluvial avulsion resulted in marine inundation in back-barrier position, whereas coastal progradation was simultaneously taking place basinwards. We demonstrate that the landward equivalents of marine flooding surfaces (parasequence boundaries) may be defined by brackish and freshwater fossil assemblages, and traced for tens of kilometers into the non-marine realm. This makes millennial-scale parasequences, whether auto- or allogenic in origin, much more powerful than systems tracts for mapping detailed extents and volumes of sediment bodies. The Holocene parasequences of the Po coastal plain, with strong age control and a detailed understanding of sea-level variation, may provide insight into the driving mechanisms and predictability of successions characterized by similar depositional styles, but with poor age constraint, resulting in more robust interpretations of the ancient record.

The vastness of time is largely beyond human observation, but how aware are most geologists of the concept of time? Time spans of just a few thousands of years may become unfamiliar, when moving from the modern, observable and quantifiable, sedimentary processes acting on decadal to centennial time scales to the intricate series of depositional events discontinuously preserved in the rock record. Our experiential concept of geologic time built on the sequence stratigraphy of chronologically well-constrained, late Quaternary successions delineates a virtually unexplored hierarchy of hiatal surfaces (and condensed intervals) on 102 to 105-year time scales, i.e. below the chronologic resolution of most dating techniques commonly used to interpret the ancient stratigraphic record. In continental-margin settings, the fourth-order, Late Pleistocene-Holocene depositional sequence is punctuated by sedimentary hiatuses, and highly episodic deposition appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Systems-tract and parasequence boundaries record long periods of non-deposition, erosion, and/or stratigraphic condensation, and as little as 20% of elapsed time is represented by preserved lithofacies assemblages. In the Po River basin, a significant stratigraphic break with cumulative duration of up to 80 ky was produced by the prolonged, stepped phase of eustatic fall and subsequent lowstand, between about 120 ky and 20 ky BP. Fluvial channel-belt sand bodies developed during relatively short time periods (~10–15 ky). Early Holocene, isolated transgressive sand bodies extend for tens of kilometers along dip, spanning intervals of time of just a few centuries. In coastal-plain successions in this system, up to 50% of geologic time was taken in the interval just below parasequence boundaries, during formation of relatively condensed peat-bearing intervals. Finally, progradational sets of highstand deltaic parasequences, up to 30-m thick, can make up to 95% of the total volume of Holocene deposits, but embrace just 10% of elapsed time. Intervals of older fluvial and shallow-marine strata with sizes and architectures similar to the Po River system, that are chronologically constrained at much lower resolutions, tend to be interpreted to have developed on larger temporal scales. In these cases, severe distortions can be generated by the over-generalized assumption that sediment packages between regional unconformities represent relatively continuous successions of strata. This assumption will result in a bias towards estimates of sedimentation rates, event frequencies or durations, and sediment fluxes that can be incorrect by orders of magnitude. In addition, stratal successions bounded by surfaces of chronostratigraphic significance may not be as closely genetically related as commonly supposed. Appreciating the highly fragmented nature of the sedimentary record can fundamentally change the interpretation of hierarchical stacking of parasequences and the time scales of formation of ancient alluvial and deltaic depositional systems. We illustrate the impact of this appreciation by comparing the late Quaternary Po Plain basin stratigraphy against older strata of the Eocene Escanilla Formation and Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation strata. It is generally accepted that geologic time can be largely unrepresented by rocks, although this concept has been poorly clarified and only roughly estimated. In this paper, we extend the uniformitarian principle that “the present is the key to the past” to encompass a broader vision in which, at least for certain periods in the Earth’s history, “the recent past is the key to the deep past”.

In siliciclastic marine settings, skeletal concentrations are a characteristic feature of transgressive intervals that provide insights into biological and sequence-stratigraphic processes. To investigate taphonomic signatures of transgressive intervals, we analysed three cores along a depositional profile from the high resolution chrono- and stratigraphic framework of the Holocene Po coastal plain, in northern Italy. Coupled multivariate taphonomic and bathymetric trends delineated spatial and temporal gradients in sediment starvation/bypassing, suggesting that quality and resolution of the fossil record vary predictably along the studied depositional profile. Moreover, integration of taphonomic, bathymetric, and fossil density trends across the study area reveals distinctive signatures useful in characterizing facies associations and determining surfaces and intervals of sequence-stratigraphic significance. Within the southern Po plain succession, taphonomic degradation of macroskeletal remains increases from proximal/nearshore to distal/offshore locations. This trend is discernible for both biologically-driven (bioerosion) and physically-driven (e.g., dissolution, abrasion) shell alterations. Compared to the up-dip (most proximal) core, the down-dip core is distinguished by shell-rich lithosomes affected by ecological condensation (co-occurrence of environmentally non-overlapping taxa) and by higher taphonomic alteration. The onshore-offshore taphonomic trend likely reflects variation in sediment-accumulation along the depositional profile of the Holocene Northern Adriatic shelf, with surface/near-surface residence-time of macroskeletal remains increasing down dip due to lower accumulation rates. These results indicate that, during transgressive phases, changes in sea level (base level) are likely to produce down-dip taphonomic gradients across shelves, where the quality and resolution of the fossil record both deteriorate distally. Radiocarbon-calibrated amino acid racemisation dates on individual bivalve specimens and the chronostratigraphic framework for this profile suggest jointly that the high levels of taphonomic degradation observed distally developed over millennial time scales (∼8ky). Whereas in proximal setting overall low taphonomic degradation and geochronologic constrains point to centennial-scale time-averaging during the late transgression phase. Patterns documented in the Holocene transgressive (and lowermost regressive) deposits of the southern Po Plain may be characteristic of siliciclastic-dominated depositional systems that experience high-frequency, base-level fluctuations.

Although facies and stratal geometries of continental margin successions can be defined in detail based on subsurface and outcrop studies, most studies lack the high-resolution age control needed to constrain the time scale of formation of such successions and infer their external forcing mechanisms. Our work on the Po River Lowstand Wedge (PRLW) indicates that deposition rates are surprisingly high with the entire 350-m-thick succession being deposited in less than 17,000 years, and with individual clinothems recording time periods ranging from 400 to 4700 years. The PRLW preserves a high-resolution record of stacked, deltaic shelf-edge clinothems deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum (31.8–14.4 ky BP) in the Adriatic basin (Mediterranean Sea). We investigated clinothem internal geometry, stacking patterns, and facies distributions to infer the main controls on their growth by integrating seismic reflection data with seismic facies attributes and paleoenvironmental proxies. The stratigraphic framework of the shelf-edge clinothems was then related to major paleoenvironmental shifts during the last glacial cycle and driven by eustatic and climatic changes. Within the PRLW, we recognized three distinctive types of 100's-m-high shelf-edge clinothems, type A, type B and type C, each with diagnostic topset geometries, shelf-edge trajectories, and associated distal basin-fill deposits. These elemental clinothem types stack into two Clinothem Sets. Clinothem Set 1, with essentially flat to slightly descending shelf-edge trajectory, is composed of stacked types A and B clinothems, and records the direct influence of river flux leading to dysoxic conditions on the bottom of the basin. In particular, clinothem accumulation rates were as much as 200 km3/ky in some of the type B clinothems. Clinothem Set 2, showing ascending shelf-edge trajectory, records an aggradational stacking coupled with a retreat of the river-entry points with benthic fauna assemblages that reflect the influence of peaks in freshwater discharge. Whereas Clinothem Set 1 developed under perturbations of river supply linked to the multi-scale waxing and waning of glaciers during an interval dominated by eustatic fall, Clinothem Set 2 reflects the main thawing of glaciers concomitant to the first phase of the eustatic rise. From a sequence stratigraphic perspective, Clinothem Set 1 is interpreted as staked high-frequency sequences, while Clinothem Set 2 represents a stack of high-frequency parasequences. The high-resolution age control from boreholes and seismic data enabled us to relate stratal character to independently constrained environmental proxies: this revealed how the evolution of a shelf-edge system intricately convolves the influences of both global (eustacy) and regional (climate-driven supply fluctuations) controls, both at sub-Milankovitch scales. Finally, the thickness, geometry, and stacking patterns of the centennial to millennial clinothems of the PRLW vary in systematic ways resulting in geometries that closely resemble those of ancient shelf-edge systems, and offering the PRLW as a sub-modern analogue. Our observations also reinforce the focus of the classic sequence-stratigraphic approach on analyzing surfaces and their geometric relations and not on time duration or formation mechanisms.

Mudstone strata have a vast variety of physical, biogenic, and chemical attributes at the lamina to bed scale (approximately millimeters to decimeters thick). Our observations of more than 7 km of Paleozoic to Cenozoic mudstones revealed ordered patterns in this variety, i.e., recurrent associations of lithofacies, bedding style, sedimentary structures, and stratal architecture at bedset to parasequence scales (approximately decimeters to meters thick). We quantified characteristics of each association and their stacking patterns in vertical succession and linked them to sets of depositional processes. Most shelf mudstone strata appear to have accumulated in one of three facies association successions (FASs) that can be related to depositional regimes through characteristic modes of sediment transport and accumulation, as well as variations in benthic-energy and oxygen levels. We interpret these three FASs as records of mud accumulation on different portions of continental shelves that were dominated by storm waves, river floods, or tidal currents. Each FAS records a distinct parasequence type. This approach can help fully integrate insights from oceanographic studies into more robust interpretations of the rock record and rock-property maps.

Reconciling interpretations of geochemical, sedimentologic, and stratigraphic observations is a common challenge with many datasets, especially those from paleolake systems. The Triassic Cerro de las Cabras and Cerro Puntudo formations, part of the sedimentary fill of the Cuyana rift Basin in central-west Argentina, represent carbonate-rich playa-lake systems with abundant microbialites, but different sedimentologic and stratigraphic attributes such as presence or absence of efflorescent crystalline crusts and aggrading versus prograding-aggrading stacking patterns. A detailed study of the stable-carbon and oxygen-isotope composition of the limestones deposited in these paleolakes, together with sedimentological and mineralogical evidence as petrography, microprobe, XRD and cathodoluminescence data, enabled interpretation of their complex hydrology. Lack of correlation between carbon and oxygen stable-isotope values for both Cerro de las Cabras (δ13C χ–6.03‰; σ 0.67‰/δ18O χ −12.64‰; σ 0.55‰) and Cerro Puntudo (δ13C χ −3.10‰; σ 1.15‰/δ18O χ −12.58‰; σ 1.8‰) paleolakes strongly indicates open hydrology (underground flow), in apparent contradiction with sedimentologic and stratigraphic evidence for intermittent to persistently closed hydrography (overland flow). Stable-isotopic values for the Cerro de las Cabras paleolake together with sedimentology data indicate a recharge (hydrologically open) lake, and for the Cerro Puntudo a through-flow (hydrologically open) playa-lake. To resolve the apparent contradictions, we propose an integration of playa-lake hydrology (groundwater) with lake-basin type sedimentology, stratigraphy, and hydrography. This allowed identifying and proposing a balanced-fill–through-flow lake subtype for the Cerro Puntudo system and an underfilled–recharge-lake subtype for the Cerro de las Cabras paleolake; both with hydrology open to groundwater flow. This work suggests a starting point for expanding the lake-basin-type model to explicitly incorporate different groundwater and overland flow pathways.

Lacustrine carbonate lithofacies in the Hot Spring limestone vary systematically at meter to decameter scales and record paleobathymetry, limnologic conditions, and paleogeographic influences. This unit accumulated during the late Miocene in a lake system in an extensional basin complex, closely associated with lava flows and volcaniclastics. Sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy enable understanding and prediction of the occurrence, distribution, and character of lacustrine carbonates. Occurrence of lacustrine carbonates is a function of lake-basin type, in this case a volcanically mediated balanced-filled lake basin that contains various lithofacies: microbialite, grainstone, packstone, wackestone, and carbonate mudstone. Distribution of lithofacies is strongly controlled by depositional subenvironment and gradient (through water depth, bottom energy, circulation, and accommodation). Internal character of microbialites (i.e., type, size, porosity, vertical and horizontal permeability, associated lithotypes, diagenesis) is influenced by stratal position (at the parasequence scale) and location along the depositional profile. Depositional reservoir quality characteristics, such as microbialite porosity and thickness, grainstone size and sorting, and overall carbonate continuity and connectivity peak in the medial sublittoral zone. Conversely, secondary diagenetic effects, such as dissolution, carbonate and quartz cement, and possible authigenic clays, are highest in the updip lake-plain–littoral zones and are less common lakeward. Thus, the medial sublittoral zone has the optimum potential, where primary depositional characteristics are best developed, and negative secondary diagenetic effects are minimal. These strata share many attributes with the Cretaceous presalt systems of the south Atlantic and can provide insights about controls on potential reservoir character, distribution, and connectivity for exploration and development.

Although typically considered with a focus on high-resolution petrography, shale porosity should not be thought of as a stand-alone petrographic feature. Shale and mudstone porosity is the outcome of a long succession of processes and events that span the continuum from deposition through burial, compaction, and late diagenesis. For the Eagle Ford Shale this journey began with accumulation in intra-shelf basins at relatively low latitudes on a southeast-facing margin during early parts of the late Cretaceous. To understand the factors that generated and preserved porosity in this economically important interval, a scanning electron microscope study on ion-milled drill-core samples from southern Texas was conducted to understand the development of petrographic features and porosity and place them in stratigraphic context. The studied samples show multiple pore types, including pores defined by mineral frameworks (clay and calcite), shelter pores in foraminifer tests and other hollow fossil debris, and pores in organic material (OM). In many instances, framework and shelter pores are filled with OM that has developed pores due to maturation. Large bubble pores in OM suggest that hydrocarbon liquids were left behind in or migrated into these rocks following petroleum generation and that the bubbles developed as these rocks experienced additional thermal stress. These larger OM pores indicate deeper seated interconnection on ion-milled surfaces and in three-dimensional image stacks. The largest pores occur in the infills of foraminifer tests. The framework of crushed carbonate debris in planktonic fecal pellets shows intermediate levels of porosity, and the silicate-rich matrix that encloses framework components has the smallest average porosity. The distribution of pore types is not uniform. Our hypothesis is that facies association is an important factor that determines bulk porosity and influences reservoir performance. The observed variability in the attributes of the described distal, medial, and proximal facies associations is thought to translate into significant variability of rock properties such as total organic carbon and porosity. In turn, this variability should control the quality and distribution of the intervals that are optimum sources and reservoirs of hydrocarbons in the Eagle Ford Shale. The medial facies association most likely has the best porosity development when a favorable combination of more commonly abundant calcareous fecal pellets and organic material versus clay content is present. The systematic arrangement of facies associations into parasequences provides the basis for testing and predicting the best development of optimal reservoir facies within a sequence-stratigraphic framework in the Eagle Ford Shale.
