1. The initial COLDEX aerogeophysical survey of Southern Dome A: Overview and prospects

Abstract: The Center for Oldest Ice Exploration is using a phased approach for locating a stratigraphically intact ice core capturing the mid-Pleistocene climate transition, targeting regions near the South Pole in East Antarctica. In January 2023, we completed a broad, regional airborne survey of the southern flank of Dome A, Antarctica from South Pole Station, imaging the large scale structure of the ice sheet and underlying crust using ice penetrating radar, aeromagnetics and airborne gravity. Based on these results, in 2023/24 we will perform targeted airborne surveys at several subregions at ice thickness length scales characterize candidate sites, which will be used to locate follow-on ground-based high resolution studies. We report on current progress in year 1 data processing, focusing on englacial structure and bed properties, and implications for follow on survey work., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

2. Compositional Controls on the Distribution of Brine in Europa's Ice Shell

Abstract: The composition of impurities in ice controls the stability of liquid water and thus the distribution of potential aqueous habitats. We present a framework for modeling the brine volume fraction in impure water ice as a function of temperature and bulk ice salinity, inspired by models originally developed for sea ice. We applied this framework to examine the distribution of brine within the thermally conductive layer of Europa's ice shell, considering binary (NaCl and MgSO4) and multi-ion “analog” (Cl-dominated and SO4-dominated) endmember impurity compositions. We found the vertical extent of brine in a conductive ice layer, expressed as a fraction of the total layer thickness, to be 4, and 4-dominated ice shell. Pressure, governed by the ice thickness, was found to have only a minor effect on the vertical extent of brine within an ice shell, relative to temperature and bulk ice salinity. The minimum stable bulk ice shell salinity formed through freezing of an ocean was found to be insensitive to composition and ultimately governed by the magnitude of the assumed percolation threshold.\ud \ud Plain Language Summary\ud When ice forms from salt water, salt is excluded from the ice causing the remaining liquid water to become more saline, forming brine. We developed a method to build models that estimate how much brine exists in ice at a certain temperature for a certain amount of salt. Because water is a necessary ingredient for life, places where brine exists in ice represent potential habitats. We applied our method to the ice shell of Jupiter's moon Europa, assuming the ice shell formed from an ocean. Two possible oceans made up of different types of dissolved salts were considered. We found that the depth where brine is stable in an ice shell is more sensitive to the type of salt when two ions are present than when four ions are present. When the salt is made mostly of chloride, a larger volume of brine exists than when the salt is made up mostly of sulfate. The thickness of the ice shell did not affect the percentage of the ice layer where brine existed as much as temperature or the amount of salt did. The type of salt in the ocean did not affect how much salt was retained in the ice.

Abstract: Fluid flow through fractured rock systems is governed in large part by the distribution, interconnectivity, and size of fracture apertures. In-situ stress is one of the primary factors controlling fracture aperture, and one that is altered significantly during high-pressure fluid injections or extractions. Interactions between stress, pore pressure, aperture, and fluid flow can result in complex and evolving poroelastic behavior with significant implications regarding the predictability and risk involved with developing and managing deep subsurface reservoirs (geothermal, fossil energy, and geologic carbon sequestration). In saturated rocks, bulk electrical conductivity is sensitive to both primary and secondary porosity (i.e., matrix porosity and fractures), and therefore to fracture aperture size and distribution. We demonstrate the use of time-lapse 3D electrical resistivity tomography for remotely monitoring stress induced changes in aperture distribution during high pressure injections into a dense fractured rock system at a scale of tens of meters. Results reveal a complex and continuously evolving stress field involving aperture dilations in the natural fracture system and aperture contractions in adjacent zones of shadow stress. Results provide information about the spatiotemporal changes in the system behavior and point to the potential of electrical imaging for autonomously and remotely monitoring evolving stress conditions by proxy through changes in bulk electrical conductivity.

Abstract: The EGS Collab project, supported by the US Department of Energy, is addressing challenges in implementing enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). This includes improving understanding of the stimulation of crystalline rock to create appropriate flow pathways, and the ability to effectively simulate both the stimulation and the flow and transport processes in the resulting fracture network. The project is performing intensively monitored rock stimulation and flow tests at the 10-m scale in an underground research laboratory. Data and observations from the field test are compared to simulations to understand processes and to build confidence in numerical modeling of the processes. In Experiment 1, we examined hydraulic fracturing an underground test bed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, at a depth of approximately 1.5 km. We drilled eight sub-horizontal boreholes in a well-characterized phyllite. Six of the boreholes were instrumented with many sensor types to allow careful monitoring of stimulation events and flow tests, and the other two boreholes were used for water injection and production. We performed a number of stimulations and flow tests in the testbed. Our monitoring systems allowed detailed observations and collection of numerous data sets of processes occurring during stimulation and during dynamic flow tests. Long-term ambient temperature and chilled water flow tests were performed in addition to many tracer tests to examine system behavior. Data were rapidly analyzed, allowing adaptive control of the tests. Numerical simulation was used to answer key experimental design questions, to forecast fracture propagation trajectories and extents, and to analyze and evaluate results. Many simulations were performed in near-real-time in conjunction with the field experiments, with more detailed process study simulations performed on a longer timeframe. Experiment 2 will examine hydraulic shearing in a test bed being built at the SURF at a depth of about 1.25 km in amphibolite under a different set of stress and fracture conditions than Experiment 1. Five sets of fracture orientations were considered in design, and three orientations seem to be consistently observed.

Abstract: Enhanced Geothermal Systems could provide a substantial contribution to the global energy demand if their implementation could overcome inherent challenges. Examples are insufficient created permeability, early thermal breakthrough, and unacceptable induced seismicity. Here we report on the seismic response of a mesoscale hydraulic fracturing experiment performed at 1.5-km depth at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. We have measured the seismic activity by utilizing a 100-kHz, continuous seismic monitoring system deployed in six 60-m length monitoring boreholes surrounding the experimental domain in 3-D. The achieved location uncertainty was on the order of 1m and limited by the signal-to-noise ratio of detected events. These uncertainties were corroborated by detections of fracture intersections at the monitoring boreholes. Three intervals of the dedicated injection borehole were hydraulically stimulated by water injection at pressures up to 33MPa and flow rates up to 5L/min. We located 1,933 seismic events during several injection periods. The recorded seismicity delineates a complex fracture network comprised of multistrand hydraulic fractures and shear-reactivated, preexisting planes of weakness that grew unilaterally from the point of initiation. We find that heterogeneity of stress dictates the seismic outcome of hydraulic stimulations, even when relying on theoretically well-behaved hydraulic fractures. Once hydraulic fractures intersected boreholes, the boreholes acted as a pressure relief and fracture propagation ceased. In order to create an efficient subsurface heat exchanger, production boreholes should not be drilled before the end of hydraulic stimulations.

Abstract: We investigate the influence of foliation orientation and fine-scale folding on the static and dynamic elastic properties and unconfined strength of the Poorman schist. Measurements from triaxial and uniaxial laboratory experiments reveal a significant amount of variability in the static and dynamic Young’s modulus depending on the sample orientation relative to the foliation plane. Dynamic P-wave modulus and S-wave modulus are stiffer in the direction parallel to the foliation plane as expected for transversely isotropic mediums with average Thomsen parameters values 0.133 and 0.119 for epsilon and gamma, respectively. Static Young’s modulus varies significantly between 21 and 117 GPa, and a peculiar trend is observed where some foliated sample groups show an anomalous decrease in the static Young’s modulus when the symmetry axis (x3-axis) is oriented obliquely to the direction of loading. Utilizing stress and strain relationships for transversely isotropic medium, we derive the analytical expression for Young’s modulus as a function of the elastic moduli E1, E3, ν31, and G13 and sample orientation to fit the static Young’s modulus measurements. Regression of the equation to the Young’s modulus data reveals that the decrease in static Young’s modulus at oblique symmetry axis orientations is directly influenced by a low shear modulus, G13, which we attribute to shear sliding along foliation planes during static deformation that occurs as soon as the foliation is subject to shear stress. We argue that such difference between dynamic and static anisotropy is a characteristic of near-zero porosity anisotropic rocks. The uniaxial compressive strength also shows significant variability ranging from 21.9 to 194.6MPa across the five sample locations and is the lowest when the symmetry axis is oriented 45° or 60° from the direction of loading, also a result of shear sliding along foliation planes during static deformation.

Abstract: The primary objective of the EGS Collab Project sponsored by DOE is to increase the understanding needed to efficiently implement enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). The EGS Collab project is a collaborative research environment studying stimulation of crystalline rock at the 10-meter scale. High-quality characterization and monitoring data are collected during stimulation and flow tests to allow comparison to numerical coupled process models in an effort to build confidence in the codes and improve modeling techniques. The Experiment 1 test bed, located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD at a depth of approximately 1.5 km is being used to examine hydraulic fracturing. The testbed was characterized using numerous field-based geophysical and geologic techniques and laboratory testing, and a well-instrumented test bed was created to allow us to carefully monitor fracture stimulation events and flow tests. A number of hydraulic stimulation tests at several locations in one well were performed, creating new fractures that connect to existing fractures between the injection and production boreholes. Long-term ambient and chilled water injection tests have been performed as an analog to EGS, and system changes resulting from these water injections have been monitored using geophysical monitoring, flow, temperature, and pressure measurements, tracer tests, and microbiology. Here, we summarize the tests performed, issues identified including poroelastic and thermoelastic effects, Joule-Thomson effects, restarting effects, indications of flow channeling, and the scientific findings to date from Experiment 1. We are currently designing a second test bed aimed at investigating shear stimulation (Experiment 2).

10. Removal of ‘strip noise’ in airborne radio-echo sounding data using combined wavelet and 2D DFT filtering

Abstract: Radio-echo sounding (RES) can be used to understand ice-sheet processes, englacial flow structures and bed properties, making it one of the most popular tools in glaciological exploration. However, RES data are often subject to ‘strip noise’, caused by internal instrument noise and interference, and/or external environmental interference, which can hamper measurementand interpretation. For example, strip noise can result in reduced power from the bed, affecting the quality of ice thickness measurements and the characterization of subglacial conditions. Here, we present a method for removing strip noise based on combined wavelet and 2D Fourier filtering. First, we implement discrete wavelet decomposition on RES data to obtain multi-scale wavelet components. Then, 2D DFT spectral analysis is performed on components containing the noise. In the Fourier domain, the 2D DFT spectrum of strip noise keeps its linear features and can be removed with a ‘targeted masking’ operation. Finally, inverse wavelet transforms are performed on all wavelet components, including strip-removed components, to restore the data with enhanced fidelity. Model tests and field-data processing demonstrate the method removes strip noise well and, incidentally, can remove the strong first reflector from the ice surface, thus drastically improving the general quality of radar data.

The EGS (Enhanced Geothermal Systems) Collab project is performing stimulation and flow experiments in highly-monitored and well-characterized intermediate-scale (approximately10 to 20 meter) field test beds at a depth of approximately 1,500 meters in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our fracture stimulation and interwell flow tests are performed to better understand processes that control formation of effective subsurface heat exchangers that are critical to the development and success of EGS. Abstract: Building on UTIG’s 20 years of experience with fixed-wing aerogeophysical operations, UTIG and KOPRI have collaborated to migrate the UTIG DC-3T instrument suite to two AS-350 helicopters. UTIG’s typical instrument suite consists of a VHF ice-penetrating radar, a laser altimeter, camera, magnetometer, and gravimeter, along with a number of GPS units and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) for accurate positioning. This platform migration required miniaturizing many of the acquisition electronics, designing entirely new antennas for the radar system, as well as substantial software customizations. UTIG and KOPRI first collaborated during the 2015-2016 season to test helicopter gravimetry, a project that represented the first ever deployment of a gravimeter from an icebreaker in Antarctica. The 2016-207 season marks the first time a UTIG-designed VHF radar sounder has been flown on a helicopter. Compared to fixed-wing, the helicopters offer a particularly versatile platform for aerogeophysical survey due to the much lower infrastructure requirements, the ability to operate from an icebreaker, and the technical possibilities afforded by using a more maneuverable platform., Description of a dual helicopter aergeophysical survey from Jang Bogo Station, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica that took place in 2016-2017, supported by UTIG graduate student assistants and engineers. Ice penetrating radar and laser altimetry over David Glacier and Nansen Ice Shelf were collected by one helicopter as part of the KRT1 campaign, while gravity data was collected over Nansen Ice Shelf as part of the LGV1 campaign on a second helicopter.

We can show that such old ice is most likely to exist in the plateau area of the East Antarctic ice sheet (EAIS) without stratigraphic disturbance and should be able to be recovered after careful presite selection studies. Based on a simple ice and heat flow model and glaciological observations, we conclude that positions in the vicinity of major domes and saddle position on the East Antarctic Plateau will most likely have such old ice in store and represent the best study areas for dedicated reconnaissance studies in the near future. In contrast to previous ice core drill site selections, however, we strongly suggest significantly reduced ice thickness to avoid bottom melting. For example for the geothermal heat flux and accumulation conditions at Dome C, an ice thickness lower than but close to about 2500 m would be required to find 1.5 Myr old ice (i.e. more than 700 m less than at the current EPICA Dome C drill site). Within this constraint, the resolution of an Oldest-Ice record and the distance of such old ice to the bedrock should be maximized to avoid ice flow disturbances, for example, by finding locations with minimum geothermal heat flux. As the geothermal heat flux is largely unknown for the EAIS, this parameter has to be carefully determined beforehand. In addition, detailed bedrock topography and ice flow history has to be reconstructed for candidates of an Oldest-Ice ice coring site. Abstract: Background Other than aspirin, there are few oral antithrombotic treatments with proven efficacy in patients with acute coronary syndrome. In this report, we present the rationale, design and baseline characteristics of the Clopidogrel in Unstable angina to prevent Recurrent ischaemic Events (CURE) trial, which includes a meta-analysis of the effects of thienopyridines in patients with vascular disease. Methods and Results Combined data from randomized trials of thienopyrindines in patients with atherosclerotic disease demonstrated a 29% reduction in vascular events when compared with placebo/control (n=2392) (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58-0.86, P=0.0006) and a 10% reduction in vascular events when compared with aspirin (n=22 254) (OR 0.91, 95% Cl 0.84-0.99, P=0.039). Similarly, randomized trials of aspirin plus thienopyridines in patients undergoing intracoronary stenting, demonstrated marked benefit of aspirin plus ticlopidine in reducing death or myocardial infarction compared with aspirin alone (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.11-0.49, P=0.0001) or aspirin plus warfarin (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.33-0.78, P=0.002). Whether these benefits extend to the much larger population of patients with acute coronary syndrome is unknown. CURE is an international, randomized, double-blind trial, in which patients with acute coronary syndrome will be randomized to receive either a bolus dose of clopidogrel (300 mg) followed by 75 mg per day for 3-12 months, or matching placebo. Both groups will receive aspirin. The co-primary efficacy end-points of CURE are: (1) the composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke; and (2) the composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke or refractory ischaemia. CURE will recruit approximately 12 500 patients with acute coronary syndrome (from 28 countries) and its power to detect moderate treatment benefits will be in the region of 80-90%, while maintaining an overall type I error (a) of 0.05. The baseline characteristics of the study population are consistent with at least a moderate risk group of patients with acute coronary syndrome. Conclusions Randomized trials of thienopyridines in patients with vascular disease demonstrate that thienopyridines are effective in reducing vascular events when compared with placebo/control or aspirin, as well as when used in combination with aspirin in patients undergoing intracoronary stent implantation. The CURE trial is a large international study to determine if acute and longterm treatment with the combination of clopidogrel and aspirin is superior to aspirin alone in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Abstract: Preparations are underway for drilling well KMT-1 of the Krafla Magma Testbed at Krafla, Iceland to sample and instrument the margin of a rhyolite magma body. The project is driven by the need to understand magmatic systems, to improve volcano monitoring strategies, and to develop next-generation, high-enthalpy geothermal energy. The planned depth of the well is 2100 m with cemented casings to 2040 m and a 8 ½” open hole section for coring to 2010 m. The geology for KMT-1 is well known and the well will be located close to IDDP-1 where magma was unexpectedly intersected at 2102 m depth in 2009.
