Abstract

Gravitational-wave observations by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo have provided us a new tool to explore the universe on all scales from nuclear physics to the cosmos and have the massive potential to further impact fundamental physics, astrophysics, and cosmology for decades to come. In this paper we have studied the science capabilities of a network of LIGO detectors when they reach their best possible sensitivity, called A#, and a new generation of observatories that are factor of 10 to 100 times more sensitive (depending on the frequency), in particular a pair of L-shaped Cosmic Explorer observatories (one 40 km and one 20 km arm length) in the US and the triangular Einstein Telescope with 10 km arms in Europe. We use a set of science metrics derived from the top priorities of several funding agencies to characterize the science capabilities of different networks. The presence of one or two A# observatories in a network containing two or one next generation observatories, respectively, will provide good localization capabilities for facilitating multimessenger astronomy and precision measurement of the Hubble parameter. A network of two Cosmic Explorer observatories and the Einstein Telescope is critical for accomplishing all the identified science metrics including the nuclear equation of state, cosmological parameters, growth of black holes through cosmic history, and make new discoveries such as the presence of dark matter within or around neutron stars and black holes, continuous gravitational waves from rotating neutron stars, transient signals from supernovae, and the production of stellar-mass black holes in the early universe. For most metrics the triple network of next generation terrestrial observatories are a factor 100 better than what can be accomplished by a network of three A# observatories., 45 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) in the low-frequency ($\sim$mHz) band. Low-mass lenses, such as dark-matter (DM) subhalos, have sizes comparable to the wavelength of these GWs. Encounters with these lenses produce wave-optics (WO) effects that alter waveform phase and amplitude. Thus, a single event with observable WO effects can be used to probe the lens properties. In this paper, we first compute the probability of observing WO effects in a model-agnostic way. We perform parameter estimation over approximately 1000 MBHBs with total mass, mass ratio, and redshift spanning the ranges relevant to LISA. We then calculate lensing rates using three semi-analytical models of MBHB populations. In both cases, we use a waveform model that includes merger, ringdown, and higher-order modes. We use two lens population models: the theory-based Press-Schechter halo mass function and an observation-based model derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, called the measured velocity function. We find that the probability of detecting WO effects can be as large as $\sim 3\%$, $\sim1.5\%$, and $\sim 1 \%$ at $1\sigma$, $3\sigma$, and $5\sigma$ confidence levels, respectively. The most optimistic MBHB population model yields $\sim 8$, $\sim 4$, and $\sim 3$ events at the same confidence levels, while the rates drop to $\sim 0.01$ in the more pessimistic scenarios. The most likely lens masses probed by LISA are in the range $(10^3, 10^8)\, M_{\odot}$, and the most probable redshifts are in the range $(0.3, 1.7)$. 3. The impact of compact binary confusion noise on tests of fundamental physics with next-generation gravitational-wave detectors

Abstract

Next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave observatories such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer will detect $O(10^{5}-10^{6})$ signals from compact binary coalescences every year, the exact number depending on uncertainties in the binary merger rate. Several overlapping signals will be present in band at any given time, generating a confusion noise background. We study how this confusion noise affects constraints on possible deviations from general relativity induced by modified gravity and environmental effects. Confusion noise impacts only the signals that last longer in band. Even for a "golden" GW170817-like signal, the constraints broaden by a factor in the range $[10\%,40\%]$ $([70\%,110\%])$ for the fiducial (highest) value of the local binary neutron star merger rate. Our ability to test general relativity or constrain environmental effects will be limited by systematic errors, and not by confusion noise., 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Fruit d’une large collaboration internationale, le présent volume, qui réunit 35 articles de spécialistes du domaine, se veut une contribution à l’étude de l’écriture de l’histoire dans l’Antiquité, en Grèce et à Rome, d’Hérodote à l’Empire de Byzance. À travers des enquêtes consacrées aux principaux historiens et textes historiques de cette période, ces différents textes donnent lieu à des relectures qui prennent en compte les projets historiographiques de chacun. Car si une idée traverse les diverses enquêtes qui sont rassemblées ici – et la diversité des approches a été dès le départ conçue comme un des traits du volume –, c’est qu’il convient d’aborder chaque témoignage en le replaçant dans le contexte dans lequel il a été composé, car souvent, il en apprend au moins autant sur le moment où il a été écrit que sur celui qu’il décrit. Fruit of a large international collaboration, the present volume collects 35 papers produced by experts. Its chief aim is to provide a contribution to the studies on the writing of history in Greco-Roman Antiquity from Herodotus to the Byzantine Empire. All these inquiries give rise to re-readings of each historian's historiographical project: if there is one idea pervading all the texts here collected – the diversity of approaches was thought from the start to be the one of the hallmarks of the volume – it is that each testimony should be addressed by reallocating it in the context of its own production, since these testimonies shed light both upon the moment when they were written and the one they describe.

Abstract

Gravitational-wave astronomy has revolutionized humanity's view of the universe, a revolution driven by observations that no other field can make. This white paper describes an observatory that builds on decades of investment by the National Science Foundation and that will drive discovery for decades to come: Cosmic Explorer. Major discoveries in astronomy are driven by three related improvements: better sensitivity, higher precision, and opening new observational windows. Cosmic Explorer promises all three and will deliver an order-of-magnitude greater sensitivity than LIGO. Cosmic Explorer will push the gravitational-wave frontier to almost the edge of the observable universe using technologies that have been proven by LIGO during its development. With the unprecedented sensitivity that only a new facility can deliver, Cosmic Explorer will make discoveries that cannot yet be anticipated, especially since gravitational waves are both synergistic with electromagnetic observations and can reach into regions of the universe that electromagnetic observations cannot explore. With Cosmic Explorer, scientists can use the universe as a laboratory to test the laws of physics and study the nature of matter. Cosmic Explorer allows the United States to continue its leading role in gravitational-wave science and the international network of next-generation observatories. With its extraordinary discovery potential, Cosmic Explorer will deliver revolutionary observations across astronomy, physics, and cosmology including: Black Holes and Neutron Stars Throughout Cosmic Time, Multi-Messenger Astrophysics and Dynamics of Dense Matter, New Probes of Extreme Astrophysics, Fundamental Physics and Precision Cosmology, Dark Matter and the Early Universe.

The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. Abstract

We study scalar perturbations of topological solitons, smooth horizonless solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory that correspond to coherent states of gravity via the dynamics of extra compact dimensions. First, we compute scalar quasinormal modes for topological stars that have a single unstable photon sphere, and we show that the spectrum is very similar to that of a black hole with the same photon sphere. Next, we study topological stars that have both a stable inner photon sphere and an unstable one. The first few quasinormal modes are localized around the inner photon sphere. The spectrum also contains ''black-hole like modes'' localized at the unstable outer photon sphere. The frequencies of these modes are similar to those of a black hole, but their imaginary part is smaller due to a cavity effect associated with the inner photon sphere. The longer damping produced by this trapping effect may have implications for black hole spectroscopy., 17 pages + Appendix, 11 figures

11. Classifying the generation and formation channels of individual LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observations from dynamically formed binaries

Abstract

We address two important questions in gravitational-wave astronomy. What is the astrophysical formation scenario leading to black-hole binary mergers? Did some of the merging black holes form hierarchically through previous generations of mergers? Leveraging fast-to-generate astrophysical simulations from the rapster code and a random forest algorithm, we develop a pipeline to accurately classify the most likely generation and formation scenario of dynamically formed BHs on an event-by-event basis. We test our framework on four merger events with features suggesting a dynamical origin: the large total mass event GW190521, GW190412 (with large mass asymmetry), and two events with effective spins antialigned with the orbital angular momentum (GW191109 and GW200225). Within the models we consider, and assuming these events to be formed dynamically, we find that one of the component black holes in GW190521 formed from a previous merger with high probability ($\gtrsim 85\%$). GW190521, GW191109 and GW200225 are compatible with formation through three-body interactions, while the most likely formation channel for GW190412 are two-body captures. We also rule out that GW191109 contains only first-generation black holes with a probability of 97$\%$. Our pipeline could be useful to identify the evolutionary path of individual GW observations once it is trained on more comprehensive sets of binary formation simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Nuclear star clusters, that fragment into metal-poor stars in situ at the centers of protogalaxies, provide ideal environments for the formation of intermediate-mass black holes with masses $10^3-10^6M_\odot$. We utilize the semi-analytic model implemented in Rapster, a public rapid cluster evolution code. We implement simple recipes for stellar collisions and gas accretion/expulsion into the code and identify the regimes where each channel contributes to the dynamical formation of intermediate-mass black holes via repeated mergers of stellar black-hole seeds. We find that intermediate-mass black hole formation is almost inevitable if the initial mean density of the nuclear cluster is $>10^8M_\odot{\rm pc}^{-3}$. Abstract

The population of binary black hole mergers observed in gravitational waves, together with astrophysical simulations, can help us to understand the properties of the progenitors and the binary formation mechanisms in different astrophysical scenarios. Here we focus on dynamical formation in star clusters. We use the third gravitational-wave transient catalog (GWTC-3) and Rapster, a rapid code to simulate cluster dynamics, to show that it is possible to construct the single-event likelihood of star cluster properties from individual observations. We find that the measured primary mass in a binary black hole merger correlates with the measured star cluster mass, because the mass spectrum of the primary component increases with the mass of the cluster. This trend may be caused by two physical mechanisms: (i) the more efficient production of hierarchical mergers with primary mass above $\sim 40~M_{\odot}$ for cluster masses of $\gtrsim 10^6~M_{\odot}$, and (ii) the suppression of more massive first-generation binaries, which happens because ejected binaries do not merge within the lookback time for cluster masses of $\lesssim 10^5~M_{\odot}$. Abstract

Galactic nuclei are potential hosts for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), whose gravitational field can affect the motion of stars and compact objects. The absence of observable perturbations in our own Galactic Centre has resulted in a few constraints on the mass and orbit of a putative IMBH. Here, we show that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) can further constrain these parameters if the IMBH forms a binary with a compact remnant (a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a stellar-mass black hole), as the gravitational-wave signal from the binary will exhibit Doppler-shift variations as it orbits around Sgr A$^\star$. We argue that this method is the most effective for IMBHs with masses $10^3\,M_\odot\lesssim M_{\rm IMBH}\lesssim 10^5\,M_\odot$ and distances of $0.1$ mpc to $2$ mpc with respect to the supermassive black hole, a region of the parameter space partially unconstrained by other methods. We show that in this region the Doppler shift is most likely measurable whenever the binary is detected in the LISA band, and it can help constrain the mass and orbit of a putative IMBH in the centre of our Galaxy. We also discuss possible ways for an IMBH to form a binary in the Galactic Centre, showing that gravitational-wave captures of stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars are the most efficient channel., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We use numerical simulations of scalar field dark matter evolving on a moving black hole background to confirm the regime of validity of (semi-)analytic expressions derived from first principles for both dynamical friction and momentum accretion in the relativistic regime. We cover both small and large clouds (relative to the de Broglie wavelength of the scalars), and light and heavy particle masses (relative to the BH size). In the case of a small dark matter cloud, the effect of accretion is a non-negligible contribution to the total force on the black hole, even for small scalar masses. We confirm that this momentum accretion transitions between two regimes (wave- and particle-like) and we identify the mass of the scalar at which the transition between regimes occurs., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Gravitational-wave observations have just started probing the properties of black-hole binary merger populations. The observation of binaries with very massive black holes and small mass ratios motivates the study of dense star clusters as astrophysical environments which can produce such events dynamically. In this paper we present Rapster (for "Rapid cluster evolution"), a new code designed to rapidly model binary black hole population synthesis and the evolution of star clusters based on simple, yet realistic prescriptions. The code can be used to generate large populations of dynamically formed binary black holes. It makes use of existing packages such as SEVN to model the initial black hole mass spectrum, and PRECESSION to model the mass, spin and gravitational recoil of merger remnants. Abstract

Stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds (SGWBs) derive from the superposition of numerous individually unresolved gravitational-wave (GW) signals. Detecting SGWBs provides us with invaluable information about astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. In this paper, we study SGWBs from binary black-hole (BBH) and binary neutron-star (BNS) coalescences in a network of next-generation ground-based GW observatories (Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope) and determine how well they can be measured; this then limits how well we can observe other subdominant astrophysical and cosmological SGWBs. We simulate all-Universe populations of BBHs and BNSs and calculate the corresponding SGWBs, which consist of a superposition of (i) undetected signals, and (ii) the residual background from imperfect removal of resolved sources. The sum of the two components sets the sensitivity for observing other SGWBs. Our results show that, even with next-generation observatories, the residual background is large and limits the sensitivity to other SGWBs. The main contributions to the residual background arise from uncertainties in inferring the coalescence phase and luminosity distance of the detected signals. Alternative approaches to signal subtraction would need to be explored to minimize the BBH and BNS foreground in order to observe SGWBs from other subdominant astrophysical and cosmological sources., 17 pages, 8 figures

Since 2015 the gravitational-wave observations of LIGO and Virgo have transformed our understanding of compact-object binaries. In the years to come, ground-based gravitational-wave observatories such as LIGO, Virgo, and their successors will increase in sensitivity, discovering thousands of stellar-mass binaries. In the 2030s, the space-based LISA will provide gravitational-wave observations of massive black holes binaries. Here we summarise how a Decihertz Observatory could provide unique insights into how black holes form and evolve across cosmic time, improve prospects for both multimessenger astronomy and multiband gravitational-wave astronomy, and enable new probes of gravity, particle physics and cosmology.

Abstract

Massive vector fields feature in several areas of particle physics, e.g., as carriers of weak interactions, dark matter candidates, or as an effective description of photons in a plasma. Here we investigate vector fields with self-interactions by replacing the mass term in the Proca equation with a general potential. We show that this seemingly benign modification inevitably introduces ghost instabilities of the same kind as those recently identified for vector-tensor theories of modified gravity (but in this simpler, minimally coupled theory). It has been suggested that nonperturbative dynamics may drive systems away from such instabilities. We demonstrate that this is not the case by evolving a self-interacting Proca field on a Kerr background, where it grows due to the superradiant instability. The system initially evolves as in the massive case, but instabilities are triggered in a finite time once the self-interaction becomes significant. These instabilities have implications for the formation of condensates of massive, self-interacting vector bosons, the possibility of spin-one bosenovae, vector dark matter models, and effective models for interacting photons in a plasma., 10 pages, 5 figures, updated to accepted version

Abstract

A population of primordial black holes formed in the early Universe could contribute to at least a fraction of the black-hole merger events detectable by current and future gravitational-wave interferometers. With the ever-increasing number of detections, an important open problem is how to discriminate whether a given event is of primordial or astrophysical origin. We systematically present a comprehensive and interconnected list of discriminators that would allow us to rule out, or potentially claim, the primordial origin of a binary by measuring different parameters, including redshift, masses, spins, eccentricity, and tidal deformability. We estimate how accurately future detectors (such as the Einstein Telescope and LISA) could measure these quantities, and we quantify the constraining power of each discriminator for current interferometers. We apply this strategy to the GWTC-3 catalog of compact binary mergers. et al., The science objectives of the LISA mission have been defined under the implicit assumption of a 4-years continuous data stream. Based on the performance of LISA Pathfinder, it is now expected that LISA will have a duty cycle of ≈0.75 , which would reduce the effective span of usable data to 3 years. This paper reports the results of a study by the LISA Science Group, which was charged with assessing the additional science return of increasing the mission lifetime. We explore various observational scenarios to assess the impact of mission duration on the main science objectives of the mission. We find that the science investigations most affected by mission duration concern the search for seed black holes at cosmic dawn, as well as the study of stellar-origin black holes and of their formation channels via multi-band and multi-messenger observations. Abstract

Next-generation terrestrial gravitational-wave observatories will detect $\mathcal{O}(10^{5})$ signals from compact binary coalescences every year. These signals can last for several hours in the detectors' sensitivity band and they will be affected by multiple unresolved sources contributing to a confusion-noise background in the data. Using an information-matrix formalism, we estimate the impact of the confusion noise power spectral density in broadening the parameter estimates of a GW170817-like event. If our estimate of the confusion noise power spectral density is neglected, we find that masses, spins, and distance are biased in about half of our simulations under realistic circumstances. The sky localization, while still precise, can be biased in up to $80\%$ of our simulations, potentially posing a problem in follow-up searches for electromagnetic counterparts., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The science objectives of the LISA mission have been defined under the implicit assumption of a 4-years continuous data stream. Based on the performance of LISA Pathfinder, it is now expected that LISA will have a duty cycle of ≈ 0.75 , which would reduce the effective span of usable data to 3 years. This paper reports the results of a study by the LISA Science Group, which was charged with assessing the additional science return of increasing the mission lifetime. We explore various observational scenarios to assess the impact of mission duration on the main science objectives of the mission. We find that the science investigations most affected by mission duration concern the search for seed black holes at cosmic dawn, as well as the study of stellar-origin black holes and of their formation channels via multi-band and multi-messenger observations. Abstract

The present paper deals with a particular typology of scribal errors, quite common in the tradition of Vergil’s text, due to mnemonic iteration by copyists or interference of loci similes: this phenomenon, which can be defined by the formula, coined by Remigio Sabbadini, poeta uariat, librarii iterant, supplies an ecdotic principle of general validity, which turns out to be often useful for the constitution of the text. After considering some factors which contribute to the diffusion of the phenomenon, over fifty Virgilian passages, more or less problematic, are discussed, where such kind of errors have presumably intervened. Il presente articolo prende in esame una particolare tipologia di errori scribali, piuttosto comuni nella tradizione del testo di Virgilio, dovuti all’iterazione mnemonica da parte dei copisti o all’interferenza di loci similes : tale fenomeno, che può essere definito con la formula, coniata da Remigio Sabbadini, poeta uariat, librarii iterant, fornisce un criterio ecdotico di validità generale, che si rivela spesso utile ai fini della costituzione del testo. Dopo una disamina dei fattori che facilitano la diffusione del fenomeno, nell’articolo si discutono più di cinquanta passi virgiliani, più o meno problematici, in cui errori di questo tipo sono presumibilmente intervenuti.

In the use of participle morantibus in apoc. 9, 1 can be detected a translinguistic wordplay between the Latin verb mǒror and the Greek adjective μωρός, which targets the proverbial stupidity of Claudius and draws on a similar wordplay coined, according to Suetonius, by the new princeps Nero. Another allusion to the same wordplay is probably present also in the neologism fatuari (from fatuus, the Latin word corresponding to μωρός) in apoc. 7, 1. All that can confirm the hypothesis that Seneca’s Apococolocyntosis was primarily composed for the amusement of Nero’s court (perhaps on occasion of the Saturnalia), at the expense of the recently dead emperor Claudius.

Abstract

Black holes are unique among astrophysical sources: they are the simplest macroscopic objects in the Universe, and they are extraordinary in terms of their ability to convert energy into electromagnetic and gravitational radiation. Our capacity to probe their nature is limited by the sensitivity of our detectors. The LIGO/Virgo interferometers are the gravitational-wave equivalent of Galileo’s telescope. The first few detections represent the beginning of a long journey of exploration. At the current pace of technological progress, it is reasonable to expect that the gravitational-wave detectors available in the 2035-2050s will be formidable tools to explore these fascinating objects in the cosmos, and space-based detectors with peak sensitivities in the mHz band represent one class of such tools. These detectors have a staggering discovery potential, and they will address fundamental open questions in physics and astronomy. Are astrophysical black holes adequately described by general relativity? Do we have empirical evidence for event horizons? Can black holes provide a glimpse into quantum gravity, or reveal a classical breakdown of Einstein’s gravity? How and when did black holes form, and how do they grow? Are there new long-range interactions or fields in our Universe, potentially related to dark matter and dark energy or a more fundamental description of gravitation? Precision tests of black hole spacetimes with mHz-band gravitational-wave detectors will probe general relativity and fundamental physics in previously inaccessible regimes, and allow us to address some of these fundamental issues in our current understanding of nature.

Abstract

Black hole spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the Kerr nature of astrophysical compact objects and their environment. The observation of multiple ringdown modes in gravitational waveforms could soon lead to high-precision gravitational spectroscopy, so it is critical to understand if the quasinormal mode spectrum is stable against perturbations. It was recently shown that the pseudospectrum can shed light on the spectral stability of black hole quasinormal modes. We study the pseudospectrum of Reissner-Nordstr��m spacetimes and we find a spectral instability of scalar and gravitoelectric quasinormal modes in subextremal and extremal black holes, extending similar findings for the Schwarzschild spacetime. The asymptotic structure of pseudospectral contour levels is the same for scalar and gravitoelectric perturbations. By making different gauge choices in the hyperboloidal slicing of the spacetime, we find that the broad features of the pseudospectra are remarkably gauge-independent. The gravitational-led and electromagnetic-led quasinormal modes of extremal Reissner-Nordstr��m black holes exhibit "strong" isospectrality: not only their spectrum coincides, but the whole pseudospectrum is the same for both classes of perturbations. Abstract

Translating in his Arati Phaenomena the Aratean myth of Orion and the scorpion, Germanicus introduces a series of allusions to the parallel episode in the proem of Nicander's Theriaca, which was modelled in turn on the passage of Aratus' Phaenomena. In so doing, Germanicus emphasizes the intertextual connection between the two poems, and incorporates both of them in his Aratean translation. At the same time, some of these Nicandrean borrowings are reformulated through the use of Virgilian vocabulary. The Orion episode can therefore be seen as a sample of Germanicus' poetical technique and allusive art, highlighting the various components of his refined literary culture.

Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Accepted for publication on Sci. 33 pags., 1 fig., In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA,we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising fundamental physics directions. We organize these directions through a “science-first” approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics., E. Abstract

Following the selection of The Gravitational Universe by ESA, and the successful flight of LISA Pathfinder, the LISA Consortium now proposes a 4 year mission in response to ESA's call for missions for L3. The observatory will be based on three arms with six active laser links, between three identical spacecraft in a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km. LISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using Gravitational Waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the infant Universe at TeV energy scales, has known sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales near the horizons of black holes, all the way to cosmological scales. The LISA mission will scan the entire sky as it follows behind the Earth in its orbit, obtaining both polarisations of the Gravitational Waves simultaneously, and will measure source parameters with astrophysically relevant sensitivity in a band from below $10^{-4}\,$Hz to above $10^{-1}\,$Hz., Submitted to ESA on January 13th in response to the call for missions for the L3 slot in the Cosmic Vision Programme

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

Abstract

The LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave (GW) interferometers have to-date detected ten merging black hole (BH) binaries, some with masses considerably larger than had been anticipated. Stellar-mass BH binaries at the high end of the observed mass range (with "chirp mass" ${\cal M} \gtrsim 25 M_{\odot}$) should be detectable by a space-based GW observatory years before those binaries become visible to ground-based GW detectors. This white paper discusses some of the synergies that result when the same binaries are observed by instruments in space and on the ground. We consider intermediate-mass black hole binaries (with total mass $M \sim 10^2 -10^4 M_{\odot}$) as well as stellar-mass black hole binaries. We illustrate how combining space-based and ground-based data sets can break degeneracies and thereby improve our understanding of the binary's physical parameters. While early work focused on how space-based observatories can forecast precisely when some mergers will be observed on the ground, the reverse is also important: ground-based detections will allow us to "dig deeper" into archived, space-based data to confidently identify black hole inspirals whose signal-to-noise ratios were originally sub-threshold, increasing the number of binaries observed in both bands by a factor of $\sim 4 - 7$., White Paper submitted to Astro2020 (2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics)

Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced “spectral-timing-polarimetry” techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process. Abstract

We propose a space-based interferometer surveying the gravitational wave (GW) sky in the milli-Hz to $��$-Hz frequency range. By the 2040s', the $��$-Hz frequency band, bracketed in between the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and pulsar timing arrays, will constitute the largest gap in the coverage of the astrophysically relevant GW spectrum. Yet many outstanding questions related to astrophysics and cosmology are best answered by GW observations in this band. We show that a $��$-Hz GW detector will be a truly overarching observatory for the scientific community at large, greatly extending the potential of LISA. Conceived to detect massive black hole binaries from their early inspiral with high signal-to-noise ratio, and low-frequency stellar binaries in the Galaxy, this instrument will be a cornerstone for multimessenger astronomy from the solar neighbourhood to the high-redshift Universe., 28 pages, 8 figures; White Paper submitted to ESA's Voyage 2050 call for papers on behalf of the LISA Consortium 2050 Task Force

Abstract

Discussion of the tragic verse quoted by the declaimer Porcius Latro in the first Controversia of Seneca the Elder’s declamatory collection (‘cur fugis fratrem? scit ipse’). This anonymous fragment, deriving from an unidentified tragedy on the myth of Atreus and Thyestes, may belong to Varius Rufus’ Thyestes. The analysis of the rhetorical function of the quotation in Latro’s declamation means that we must preserve transmitted fugis against Bücheler’s fugit.

Il lavoro mira in particolare a mostrare come Avieno faccia interagire questo materiale esegetico con il testo di Arato, mettendo in atto un dialogo a distanza con il suo modello nell'intento di precisarlo e rettificarlo, oppure di colmare alcune sue lacune.

Abstract

Astral mythology is one of the basic themes which concur to shape the poetical programme of Ovid’s Fasti, since such mythological tales are often introduced by the poet to provide an aition for the catasterism (transformation into a star) of various constellations mentioned in his calendrical poem. In this paper I examine some of the catasterism myths included in the Fasti, in order to illustrate their intertextual relationship with the two main Greek literary models used by Ovid: Aratus’ Phaenomena and Eratosthenes’ Catasterismi. In particular, I aim at highlighting the allusive plays set up by Ovid with Aratus’ astronomical poem, but also the importance of Eratosthenes’ mythographical handbook not just as a source of mythological information, but also as a true intertext.

As a part of the Hermagorean status-theory, the system of the status legales was established in the ancient rhetorical doctrine as the standard procedure for the treatment of cases involving a problem of interpretation of the law, and represented therefore the main link between rhetoric and law. By examining the application of the status legales in some controversiae of Seneca the Elder’s declamatory collection, I aim at illustrating how this method of the juridical argumentation matches up with the use in declamation of fictional laws.

Abstract

Following the selection of The Gravitational Universe by ESA, and the successful flight of LISA Pathfinder, the LISA Consortium now proposes a 4 year mission in response to ESA's call for missions for L3. The observatory will be based on three arms with six active laser links, between three identical spacecraft in a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km. LISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using Gravitational Waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the infant Universe at TeV energy scales, has known sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales near the horizons of black holes, all the way to cosmological scales. The LISA mission will scan the entire sky as it follows behind the Earth in its orbit, obtaining both polarisations of the Gravitational Waves simultaneously, and will measure source parameters with astrophysically relevant sensitivity in a band from below $10^{-4}\,$Hz to above $10^{-1}\,$Hz.

Abstract

On discussing the role and the utility of declamation in the rhetorical education, Quintilian singles out two different functions and purposes of the declamatory practice, the 'didactic' and the 'epideictic'. As a propaedeutic to practical oratory, declamation should be as close as possible to a real forensic speech; but in so far it has in itself an element of exhibitionism (ostentatio), in order to arouse the audience's pleasure (voluptas audientium), declamation can indulge more in stylistic and literary embellishments. On the other hand, these same purposes are elsewhere ascribed by Quintilian to poetry. A special affinity links therefore declamation and poetry by virtue of their common 'epideictic' nature, and this results in an interaction and reciprocal influence between the two genres, that emerges as one of the most distinctive features of the Latin literary culture of the imperial age. In accordance with these theoretical premises, some concrete examples are proposed in order to illustrate, in both directions, the relationship between declamation and poetry. Seneca the Elder's Controversy 2,7 and pseudo-Quintilian's Major Declamation 13 show how the use of poetic models, respectively the elegiac genre and Virgil's Georgics, can affect non only the stylistic and literary form of a declamation, but also its rhetorical and argumentative structure. On the other hand, the 'Armorum iudicium', the contest between Ajax and Ulixes for Achilles' arms in Book 13 of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and the speech of the eunuch Pothinus advising the Egyptians to kill Pompey in Book 8 of Lucan's Bellum civile, are examples of, respectively, a poetic controversia and suasoria.

At the beginning of 40th Letter to Lucilius, Seneca reflects on the nature of his correspondence with his friend and of epistolary genre, and sets up an antithesis between letters on one hand, which bringing on themselves the tangible traces of sender’s hand are capable to eliminate distances and make one feel the real presence of an absent friend, and imagines amicorum absentium on the other hand, which are unable to generate the same effect. The term imagines has always been understood as meaning ‘portraits’; in this paper I argue that it must rather mean ‘mental representations’, a sense corresponding to Greek term phantasiai or phantasmata.

Abstract

The dynamics of precessing binary black holes (BBHs) in the post-Newtonian regime has a strong timescale hierarchy: the orbital timescale is very short compared to the spin-precession timescale which, in turn, is much shorter than the radiation-reaction timescale on which the orbit is shrinking due to gravitational-wave emission. We exploit this timescale hierarchy to develop a multi-scale analysis of BBH dynamics elaborating on the analysis of [1]. We solve the spin-precession equations analytically on the precession time and then implement a quasi-adiabatic approach to evolve these solutions on the longer radiation-reaction time. This procedure leads to an innovative "precession-averaged" post-Newtonian approach to studying precessing BBHs. We use our new solutions to classify BBH spin precession into three distinct morphologies, then investigate phase transitions between these morphologies as BBHs inspiral. These precession-averaged post-Newtonian inspirals can be efficiently calculated from arbitrarily large separations, thus taking a step towards bridging the gap between astrophysics and numerical relativity.
