A new species of the carabid beetle genus Bembidion Latreille is described from the Central Valley, Los Angeles Basin, and surrounding areas of California. Bembidion brownorumsp. nov. is a distinctive species, a relatively large member of the subgenus Notaphus Dejean, and within Notaphus a member of the B. obtusangulum LeConte species group. It has faint spots on the elytra and a large, convex, rounded prothorax. Of the 22 specimens from 11 localities, all but one were collected more than 55 years ago. Although the collection of the holotype in 2021 at UV light suggest the species is still extant, the lack of other recent specimens suggests the species may have a more restricted distribution than in the past, and its populations may be in decline.

Bembidion (Peryphanes) sanatum iwanai ssp. n. is described from the solfatara fields of the Mendeleev Volcano (Kuril Archipelago: Kunashir Island). It slightly differs from the nominative subspecies by body proportions, as well as the relatively narrow external intervals of the elytra and their microsculpture, yet showing stable distinctions in endophallus armature (basal part of lamina 1 is rounded, vs. angular in the nominative subspecies) and in the spermatheca duct (5–6 convolutions, vs. 7–8 in the nominative subspecies). Endemism of insects on the island’s large volcanic massifs of Kunashir Island is discussed.

Some corrections to the section of subtribe Bembidiina of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera, Vol. 1, together with geographic, systematic, and synonymic updates are reported and commented upon. The following five new synonymies are proposed (with junior synonym listed first): Bembidion (Peryphanes) dostali Kirschenhofer, 1984 = Bembidion (Peryphanes) sanatum Bates, 1883 syn. nov.; Bembidion (Terminophanes) pseudoconsumatum Kirschenhofer, 1984 = Bembidion (Terminophanes) sjoelanderi Jedlička, 1965 syn. nov.; Bembidion (Asioperyphus) sapporense Jedlička, 1951 = Bembidion (Politophanes) chloreum Bates, 1873 syn. nov.; Bembidion (Peryphus) torosiense Jedlička, 1961 = Bembidion (Peryphus) subcostatum vau Netolitzky, 1913 syn. nov.; Sinechostictus (Sinechostictus) multisulcatus cariniger Korge, 1971 = Sinechostictus (Sinechostictus) multisulcatus (Reitter, 1890) syn. nov. Furthermore we confirm the following synonimies: Asaphidion weiratheri Netolitzky, 1935 = Asaphidion ganglbaueri J.Müller, 1921; Sinechostictus (Sinechostictus) effluviorum (Peyron, 1858) = Sinechostictus (Sinechostictus) tarsicus (Peyron, 1858). The following nine new combinations are proposed: Bembidion (Euperyphus) dimidiatum Ménétriés, 1832 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Peryphus) psuchrum Andrewes, 1922 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Plataphus) pseudolucillum Netolitzky, 1938 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Politophanes) chloreum Bates, 1873 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Politophanes) gotoense Habu, 1973 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Politophanes) shunichii Habu, 1973 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Politophanes) umeyai Habu, 1959 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Politophanes) yoshidai Morita, 2009 comb. nov.; Bembidion (Terminophanes) sjoelanderi Jedlička, 1965 comb. nov. The species Bembidion psuchrum Andrewes, 1922 and Bembidion sanatum Bates, 1883 are here redescribed.

The afrotropical species of the subgenus Microserrullula netolitzky, 1921, of the genus Odontium LeConte, 1848 are here revised. We redescribe the three-known species, Odontium aegyptiacum (Dejean, 1831), O. icterodes (Alluaud, 1933) and O. pogonopsis (Alluaud, 1933), and describe four new species: Odontium australe n. sp. (Kenya, Mozambique, Madagascar, South africa); Odontium basilewskyi n. sp. (Democratic Republic of Congo); Odontium okavangum n. sp. (angola, namibia, Zambia); Odontium clarkei n. sp. (Ethiopia). A key for the identification of the african species of the subgenus Microserrullula is presented.

Five species of ground beetles are permanent inhabitants of the fumarola fields on Kunashir Island: Cicindela (Cicindela) sachalinensis A. Morawitz, 1862; Cylindera (Eugrapha) elisae (Motschulsky, 1859); Bembidion (Ocydromus) dolorosum (Motschulsky, 1860); B. (Peryphanes) sanatum Bates, 1883, and Poecilus (Poecilus) samurai (Lutshnik, 1916). These species respond differently to extreme conditions. In some species, the size is decreased (C. elisae, B. dolorosum), but is increased in P. samurai; in B. dolorosum, the pigmentation is decreased, while increased in others (C. sachalinensis, C. elisae, P. samurai). The degree of these variations depends neither on taxonomic relations nor the adaptation time. The areas of moderate thermal activity of Kunashir volcanoes could have served as refugia during the colder climatic periods. Based on data on the variability and barcoding of B. dolorosum, the following new synonymy is established: Bembidion (Ocydromus) dolorosum (Motschulsky, 1860) = Bembidion (Ocydromus) negrei Habu, 1958, syn. nov. = Bembidion (Peryphus) kuznetsovi Lafer, 2002, syn. nov.

Two new species of Bembidion are described from river shores in North America. One, Bembidion mimbres sp. nov., from the Gila River watershed in the lands of the Mimbres culture in New Mexico and Arizona, is closely related to the widespread Bembidion levigatum . DNA sequences from several linkage groups and morphology provide evidence of the distinctiveness of B. mimbres . The second, Bembidion corgenoma sp. nov., has been the subject of recent genomic and transcriptomic studies. It belongs in the Bembidion transversale subgroup, and occurs from California north to British Columbia, east to Montana and Nevada. The B. transversale subgroup as a whole is reviewed, and morphological characters that distinguish B. corgenoma from the similar and sympatric B. transversale and B. erosum are described and illustrated. DNA sequences of these three species show no consistent differences in 28S, COI, CAD, and Topoisomerase, and a coalescent species delimitation analysis reveals no notable structure within the complex. This is the first known trio of species within Bembidion for which those genes provide no clear signal of species boundaries. A neotype is designated for the one name in the group that lacks a primary type, Bembidium haplogonum Chaudoir. Chromosomes of the new species and their relatives are as is typical for Bembidion , with eleven pairs of autosomes and an XY/XX sex chromosome system.

In this paper we present an updated checklist of thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes (Ascomycota, Pezizomycotina), that is, the orders Herpomycetales and Laboulbeniales, from Belgium and the Netherlands. Two species are newly described based on morphology, molecular data (ITS, LSU ribosomal DNA) and ecology (host association). Based on the combined data, we are able to identify mutual gaps that need to be filled as well as weigh the impact of chosen strategies (fieldwork, museum collections) and techniques in these neighboring countries. The aim of this work is to serve as a reference for studying Laboulbeniomycetes fungi in Europe.

Measuring genome size across different species can yield important insights into evolution of the genome and allow for more informed decisions when designing next-generation genomic sequencing projects. New techniques for estimating genome size using shallow genomic sequence data have emerged which have the potential to augment our knowledge of genome sizes, yet these methods have only been used in a limited number of empirical studies. In this project, we compare estimation methods using next-generation sequencing (k-mer methods and average read depth of single-copy genes) to measurements from flow cytometry, the gold standard for genome size measures, using ground beetles (Carabidae) and other members of the beetle suborder Adephaga as our test system. We also present a new protocol for using read-depth of single-copy genes to estimate genome size. Additionally, we report flow cytometry measurements for five previously unmeasured carabid species, as well as 21 new draft genomes and six new draft transcriptomes across eight species of adephagan beetles. No single sequence-based method performed well on all species, and all tended to underestimate the genome sizes, although only slightly in most samples. For one species,Bembidion haplogonum, most sequence-based methods yielded estimates half the size suggested by flow cytometry. This discrepancy for k-mer methods can be explained by a large number of repetitive sequences, but we have no explanation for why read-depth methods yielded results that were also strikingly low.

According to the habitat layers, ground beetles of agrocenoses of Ukraine were divided on three groups: preferential inhabitants of the soil (geobios), inhabitants of the surface of the soil and plant litter (stratobios) and preferential inhabitants of the plants (phytobios). Ground beetles of geobios were represented with about 20 species, from which only five species were relatively numerous. About 370 species were registered in stratobios (about 90 are dominants or subdominants). The inhabitants of the plant layer encompassed about 10 species, but most of them were rare in agrocenoses. Most spring zoophagous species of Carabidae (mainly species of the genus Poecilus) are characterized by a low level of aggregation (Ka = 0.25–0.35). A higher degree of aggregation was recorded for small species of ground beetles (Bembidion, Microlestes) and some mixophagous (Amara similata, A. aenea, Harpalus distinguendus). At summer, the higher level of aggregation was registered (Ka = 0.35–0.46), especially for summer-autumn group of ground beetles (Calathus ambiguus, C. melanocephalus, Harpalus rufipes) and some multi-seasonal species (Pterostichus melanarius). An essential factor affecting the distribution of ground beetles on the field is the density of the plants. On the plots with rare vegetation the accumulation of thermophilous and mesoxerophilous species (Poecilus crenuliger, P. koyi, P. puncticollis) was observed (significant correlation). Higher number of mesophilous and mesohygrophilous Carabidae (Bembidion properans, Poecilus cupreus, P. punctulatus) are registered on the plots with dense vegetation, especially during reproduction period. An increase in the number and diversity of the Carabidae are observed in relatively small fields (up to 50–60 ha), bordered by forest belts or natural biotops. In large fields (more than 100 ha) surrounded by similar crops, the abundance of dominant species of Carabidae was significantly decreased.

Floodplains are inhabited by diverse and abundant ground beetle assemblages that are adapted to the frequently changing habitat conditions. While there have been many studies on the composition of riparian ground beetle communities in individual floodplains, the general patterns responsible for their composition remained obscure. We used data on 352 ground beetle samples taken at 224 sites along rivers and their floodplains in Germany to analyse how natural large-scale descriptors and floodplain morphological status (near-natural vs. degraded vs. restored sites) determine the composition of ground beetle assemblages. For each site we compiled data on region, slope and dominant floodplain substrate, and on floodplain morphological status (near-natural, degraded or restored conditions). Hierarchical clustering revealed eight main clades and a clear hierarchy of parameters, with floodplain slope being responsible for the two main clades, followed by ‘region’ and ‘dominant floodplain substrate’ that structure the second and third orders of division. Some of the third-order clades are exclusively or predominantly composed of near-natural or restored sites, indicating that sites of high morphological status are inhabit by a distinct ground beetle community in a given region. Indicator species analysis resulted in indicators for all regions (132 indicators species) and slope (122 indicator species) categories and for almost all classes of dominant floodplain substrate (117 indicator species). Most of the indicator species with high predictive values and sensitivities belong to the genus Bembidion. For the morphological status categories, we identified 126 indicator species in total: 112 related to near-natural conditions, 13 for restored sites and only a single species for degraded conditions. Our results underline that slope, region and dominant floodplain substrate are among the main natural drivers of riparian ground beetle community composition and the suitability of ground beetles to indicate degradation and restoration processes.

Bembidion (Talanes) aspericolle (Germar, 1829) is a Western Palearctic species which lives on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas and saline inland habitats from Central Europe to Central Asia. Anthropogenic impact is one of the most important environmental factors affecting the morphological variability of ground beetles. The objective of our research is assessment of the morphological variability of this species in three ecosystems differing by intensity of anthropogenic impact. 13 linear characteristics, one angular characteristic, density of pores on the prothorax and elytra, contrast of spots on the beetles’ elytra were measured, and 6 morphometric indices were calculated. The mean value of body length in females is more than in males in the studied populations. In the ecosystem with high anthropogenic pressure, female body length is shorter by 3.7% and elytra length is shorter by 6.0% than in females in the ecosystem with low anthropogenic impact. Differences between populations in the body length of males are not significant. In the ecosystem with high anthropogenic transformation, sexual dimorphism is observed only on head and prothorax width. The ratio of maximum width of elytra to maximum prothorax width decreases significantly with increasing anthropogenic load. The impact of anthropogenic factors on the ecosystem produces significant changes in elytra length and head width of B. aspericolle and in four of the six morphometric indices. It is reasonable to use these morphometric characteristics of B. aspericolle adults in bioindication. The complex of anthropogenic factors does not have a significant impact on the value of anterior and posterior angles of prothorax, density of prothorax and elytra puncturing and contrast of the light spots at the top of the elytra. The sex of the specimen influences all linear characteristics. The absence of significant differences in morphometric indices between males and females shows that the body proportions of the beetles remain unchanged and only linear dimensions vary. Research on the morphological variability of B. aspericolle is important for understanding microevolutionary processes in populations of beetles under anthropogenically induced changes in the environment.

Bembidion (Ocydromus) terryerwinisp. nov. from Central Iran (Kerman and Yazd Provinces), described here, belongs to the decorum species group (Ocydromus Clairville, 1806). The new species is compared with the other taxa of this species group occurring in Iran and neighboring regions (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, South Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan).

Un individu de Bembidion gilvipes (Fig. 3a) a été découvert à Hemishofen (SH) le 31.10.2018 par FC. Au cours d’un projet visant à mieux comprendre le type de milieu que colonise un mollusque rare typique de bas-marais (Cochlicopa nitens (M. von Gallenstein, 1848)), du matériel végétal (mousses, débris végétaux au sol, …) a été récolté dans un bas-marais d’importance régionale (Fig. 4), puis trié et tamisé quelques semaines plus tard. Au sein du matériel récolté se trouvait un individu de Bembidion gilvipes. L’espèce, assez répandue dans le Bade-Wurtemberg au Sud de l’Allemagne (Trautner 2017), était potentielle dans le Nord de la Suisse mais n’avait encore jamais été capturée. B. gilvipes est principalement distribué en Europe septentrionale et centrale. Commune au nord, l’espèce se raréfie vers le sud. En France, elle ne se rencontre que dans la moitié Nord du pays (Coulon & Pupier 2014). Elle colonise les lieux humides inondables tels que prairies humides, rives de cours d’eau, marais, roselières et aulnaies, souvent avec un couvert important de végétation (Müller-Motzfeld 2006, Schott 2017, Trautner 2017). A new record of a subpopulation of Bembidion monticola Sturm, 1825 from Arkhangelsk region (Northern Europe, Russia) is discussed. The locality of this record is remote, about 700 km to the east from the northernmost previously known locality of this species. Ecology and distribution of B. monticola in northern Europe are reviewed, as well as possible ways of its spread further to northeast are hypothesised.

Morphological adaptations of cave-dwelling organisms including different groups of Coleoptera have fascinated researchers since a long time. Nevertheless, very few detailed documentations of the anatomy of cave beetles using modern techniques are available. In this study, we describe and illustrate external and internal cephalic features of free-living and cave-dwelling trechine carabid beetles using digital microscopy, SEM, micro-CT, and computer-based 3D reconstruction. Morphological characteristics found in three selected species with different habitat preferences are compared. The following derived features distinguish a troglobite species (Sinaphaenops wangorum Ueno et Ran 1998) from a species living in the entrance of caves (Trechiotes perroti Jeannel 1954) and from a fully epigean species (Bembidion sp.): (1) the optic lobes are completely missing; (2) the head capsule, mouth parts, and antennae are distinctly elongated; (3) some muscle attachment areas are shifted; and (4) an additional dilator of the pharynx is present. Despite of conspicuous differences likely related with subterranean habits, the link of some cephalic features to this specific habitat preference remains uncertain.

Field-based research conducted in 2016 in Iran resulted in the collection of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Three species—Brachinus (Brachinus) alexandri (F. Battoni, 1984), Sinechostictus (Sinechostictus) lederi (Reitter, 1888), and Amblystomus metallescens (Dejean, 1829)—are reported from Iran for the first time. In addition, Calomera sturmi (Menetries, 1832), Bembidion (Nepha) menetriesii (Kolenati, 1845), Bembidion (Peryphus) obscurellum turanicum (Csiki, 1928), and Lionychus (Lionychus) orientalis (K.Daniel, 1901) are reported from the Alburz Province for the first time. Microlestes plagiatus (Duftschmid, 1812) is reported from the Mazandarn Province for the first time and Myriochila (Myriochila) semicircumcincta (Mandl, 1959) is reported from Hormozgan Province for the first time.

The ground beetle genus Bembidion is a highly diverse group of small predators with more than 1.200 described extant species. In contrast, only two representatives of Bembidion are known from the amber fossil record and their position within this mega-diverse genus is dubious. Here, we address the taxonomic position of these two extinct Bembidion species (B. succini Giebel, 1856 and B. christelae Ortuño & Arillo, 2010). Based on the insufficient description and the missing type specimen, B. succini, nomen dubium, cannot be assigned to the genus Bembidion and/or to the tribe Bembidiini with certainty. The subgenus Archaeophilochthus Ortuño & Arillo, 2010 was erected for the second extinct species, B. christelae, based on external characters. However, this species seems indistinguishable to members of the earlier described subgenus Philochthemphanes Netolitzky, 1943 which comprises about extant 10 species distributed in East and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, we describe two new species, B. bukejsi sp. n. and B. alekseevi sp. n., from the Eocene Baltic amber using X-ray microscopy. Based on external and genital morphology including endophallic structures, we erected the monotypic subgenus Eodontium subgen. n. for B. bukejsi sp. n., which is probably related to the subgenera Andrewesa Netolitzky, 1931, the Hydrium complex, or the Odontium series sensu Maddison (2012). On the other hand, B. alekseevi sp. n. can be assigned to the subgenus Eupetedromus Netolitzky, 1911. The occurrence of representatives of at least two species groups adapted to a temperate climate suggests the presence of at least locally temperate climates in Baltic amber forests.

In conservation agriculture, slugs are considered significant pests and their monitoring is a key option in the integrated pest management framework. Together with molluscicide applications, predators such as ground beetles can offer a tool for slug control in the field. Through the evaluation of slug and ground beetle monitoring strategies, this work compared their presence in conventional and conservation agricultural plots. The invasive Deroceras invadens was the dominant slug species to occur in all sampling periods. Among Carabidae, Poecilus cupreus and Pterostichus melas were the most abundant species, and Bembidion spp., Brachinus spp., and Harpalus spp. were also common. Beer-baited pitfall traps, whatever their alcoholic content, caught more slugs and ground beetles than wooden boards used as shelters. Slugs were more abundant in conventional plots than in conservation plots, possibly due to the lower presence of natural enemies such as ground beetles. Despite possible impacts on Carabidae, beer-baited pitfall traps should be considered a useful tool for slug monitoring and for the planning of molluscicide applications. Soil management such as minimum- or no-tillage and the presence of cover crops are important elements influencing both slug and ground beetle presence, possibly playing a key role in the maintenance of natural enemy populations.

A variety of organisms mediate river–terrestrial linkages through spatial subsidies. However, most empirical studies have classified organisms rather broadly (e.g., by functional group or taxonomic family) and have dismissed species-level linkages at the interface of ecosystems. Here, we show how allochthonous resource use varies among taxonomically similar species of ground beetles (family Carabidae) across seasons (June–September). We investigated seasonal shifts in the distribution of five beetle species and their dietary responses to spatial subsidies (emerging aquatic insects) in a Japanese braided river. Despite their taxonomic closeness, the ground beetles showed species-specific responses to spatial subsidies, and beetle distribution patterns tended to coincide with their diets. Overall, 1–56% of ground beetle diets were derived from aquatic prey. One genus (Bembidion spp.) mainly consumed aquatic prey, while three species fed primarily on terrestrial prey across all seasons. However, one species (Lithochlaenius noguchii) showed shifts in its diet from aquatic to terrestrial prey according to subsidy availability. The observed variation in allochthonous resource use was likely related to species-specific foraging modes, physiological tolerance to dry conditions, and interspecific competition. Our findings suggest that considering species-specific interactions is necessary to fully understand cross-system interactions and recipient food-web dynamics.

While anthropogenic biodiversity loss in fresh waters is among the most rapid of all ecosystems, impacts on the conservation of associated riparian zones are less well documented. Riverine ecotones are particularly vulnerable to the combined ‘squeeze’ between land-use encroachment, discharge regulation and climate change. Over a 3-year period of persistent low discharge in a regulated, temperate river system (River Usk, Wales, UK; 2009–2011), specialist carabid beetles on exposed riverine sediments (ERS) were used as model organisms to test the hypotheses that catchment-scale flow modification affects riparian zone invertebrates more than local habitat character, and that this modification is accompanied by associated succession among the Carabidae. Annual summer discharge during the study period was among the lowest of the preceding 12 years, affecting carabid assemblages. The richness of specialist ERS carabids declined, while generalist carabid species’ populations either increased in abundance or remained stable. Community composition also changed, as three (Bembidion prasinum, B. decorum and B. punctulatum) of the four dominant carabids typical of ERS increased in abundance while B. atrocaeruleum decreased. Despite significant inter-annual variation in habitat quality and the encroachment of ground vegetation, beetle assemblages more closely tracked reach-scale variations between sites or catchment-scale variations through time. These data from multiple sites and years illustrate how ERS Carabidae respond to broad-scale discharge variations more than local habitat character. This implies that the maintenance of naturally variable flow regimes is at least as important to the conservation of ERS and their dependent assemblages as are site-scale measures.

As molecular identification method, DNA barcoding based on partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences has been proven to be a useful tool for species determination in many insect taxa including ground beetles. In this study we tested the effectiveness of DNA barcodes to discriminate species of the ground beetle genus Bembidion and some closely related taxa of Germany. DNA barcodes were obtained from 819 individuals and 78 species, including sequences from previous studies as well as more than 300 new generated DNA barcodes. We found a 1:1 correspondence between BIN and traditionally recognized species for 69 species (89%). Low interspecific distances with maximum pairwise K2P values below 2.2% were found for three species pairs, including two species pairs with haplotype sharing (Bembidion atrocaeruleum/Bembidion varicolor and Bembidion guttula/Bembidion mannerheimii). In contrast to this, deep intraspecific sequence divergences with distinct lineages were revealed for two species (Bembidion geniculatum/Ocys harpaloides). Our study emphasizes the use of DNA barcodes for the identification of the analyzed ground beetles species and represents an important step in building-up a comprehensive barcode library for the Carabidae in Germany and Central Europe as well.

In lowland areas, carabid beetles show diurnal or nocturnal activity patterns depending on habitat type. However, the diel activity patterns of carabid beetles in alpine areas are poorly understood. We conducted field studies in the alpine area of Mt. Hakusan in central Japan to determine the diel activity patterns of carabid beetles according to habitat type and ground surface temperature. Using baited pitfall traps, we collected samples every three hours over a 24-hour period in the summers of 2015 and 2016 in Pinus scrub, snowbed, and fellfield sites. In both years, the numerically dominant species were Pterostichus janoi Jedlicka, 1952 in the Pinus scrub, Bembidion sp. in the snowbed, and Bembidion sp. and Colpodes xestus (Bates, 1883) in the fellfield. Carabid beetles on alpine Hakusan showed activity patterns that varied depending on habitat type or ground surface temperature. Bembidion sp. showed diurnal activity patterns in the snowbed but nocturnal activity patterns in the fellfield when the diurnal temperature range was large. However, this species was active throughout the day and night in these habitats when the diurnal temperature range was small. By contrast, P. janoi in the Pinus scrub and C. xestus in the fellfield were mainly active nocturnally in both years, regardless of temperature fluctuations. Because alpine areas are generally characterized by harsh and changeable climates, some alpine carabids such as Bembidion sp. are probably adapted to show versatile activity patterns in response to changeable microclimatic conditions.

Background:In the phase 3 TULIP-2 and TULIP-1 trials in SLE, treatment with the type I interferon receptor antibody anifrolumab resulted in higher percentages of patients with BICLA responses vs placebo at Week 52, with differences of 16.3% (primary endpoint; P=0.001, 95% CI 6.3–26.3) and 16.4% (secondary endpoint; 95% CI 6.7–26.2), respectively.1,2Objectives:To better understand the time course of BICLA responses to anifrolumab, we examined responses over time compared with placebo in TULIP-2 and TULIP-1, including those that were sustained from attainment through Week 52.Methods:The TULIP-2 and TULIP-1 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials evaluated the efficacy and safety of anifrolumab (300 mg Q4W) over 52 weeks in patients with moderately to severely active SLE who were receiving standard-of-care treatment. Time to onset of BICLA response that was sustained from attainment through Week 52 was evaluated using a Cox proportional hazards model. For TULIP-1, BICLA response rate and time to onset of BICLA response were analyzed using the amended restricted medication rules.2Results:Overall, 180 patients each in TULIP-2 and TULIP-1 received anifrolumab compared with 182 and 184 patients in the placebo arms, respectively. At the first 3 assessments in TULIP-2 (Weeks 4, 8, and 12), numerically greater percentages of patients treated with anifrolumab (26.8%, 35.3%, and 42.9%, respectively) were classified as having a BICLA response compared with placebo (21.3%, 21.6%, and 31.8%). A similar trend was observed in TULIP-1 with anifrolumab (23.3%, 34.2%, and 36.5%) vs placebo (18.3%, 23.2%, and 27.5%). The time to onset of BICLA response sustained from onset through Week 52 favored anifrolumab in both TULIP-2 (HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.11–2.18) and TULIP-1 (HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.38–2.73) (Figure). In TULIP-2, 86 (47.8%) patients treated with anifrolumab had BICLA responses that were sustained from time of onset through Week 52 compared with 57 (31.3%) patients in the placebo group. In TULIP-1, 85 (47.2%) patients in the anifrolumab treatment arm had BICLA responses that were sustained from time of onset through Week 52 compared with 55 (29.9%) patients in the placebo group.Conclusion:In 2 Phase 3 studies, a greater proportion of patients achieved BICLA responses sustained from onset through Week 52 with anifrolumab treatment compared with placebo. Anifrolumab resulted in numerically favorable differences in time to onset of BICLA responses maintained through Week 52 across the TULIP studies. Am Necker (Bütschwil-Ganterschwil, SG, 724/249) wurden gleich zwei sehr seltene Arten erstmals nachgewiesen, namentlich B. distinguendum Jacquelin du Val, 1852 und Dyschirius angustatus (Ahrens, 1830) . Beide sind wie die nachfolgende Art auf natürliche Flüsse mit kiesig-sandigen Ufern angewiesen. B. distinguendum wurde in den vergangenen 40 Jahren nur einmal im Mittelland nachgewiesen und ist auch in den Alpen nur an wenigen Stellen zu finden. This 3-year field study investigated the combined effect of floral resources and perennial shelter habitats (i.e. conservation strips), and crop rotation in supporting natural enemies of the cabbages root fly, Delia radicum. Habitat manipulation with conservation strips increased the overall catches of hymenopteran parasitoids. However, conservation strips did not increase parasitism by either of the two dominant parasitoid species, Trybliographa rapae and Aleochara bipustulata, in any study year. In fact, higher parasitism was found in control plots in the second year. This could be explained by parasitoid mobility and higher patch detectability, as more plants in the control plots were infested with D. radicum larvae. Conservation strips did not result in increased predation of D. radicum eggs. However, the activity densities of two Bembidion species were correlated with egg predation. The species assemblage distribution of epigeal predators was best explained by seasonal period, followed by year and, to a low extent, crop type, while treatment with conservation strips had no effect. However, during the egg laying peak of D. radicum, a higher number of A. bipustulata, an important larval predator was observed in conservation strips during one study year. In conclusion, positive effects of conservation strips were demonstrated for abundance of some natural enemies of D. radicum, but a consistent increase in performance could not be adequately demonstrated due to experimental set-up, the short timescale and the complex landscape in which our study site was located.

Bryophytes from seven different genera colonized 3- to 6-year-old ground near a receding glacier in central South Norway. Microscopic studies of the gut content in pioneer invertebrates revealed that mosses were grazed upon by four species: an abundant and large Collembola (Bourletiella hortensis), a moss-eating Byrrhidae beetle (Simplocaria metallica), and two omnivorous Carabidae beetles (Amara alpina and A. quenseli). The three most abundant moss species were preferred by the moss-eaters: Pohlia filum, Ceratodon purpureus, and Bryum arcticum. Special parts of the moss plant could be selected. Three other Collembola species present were classified as herbivores because they had diatom algae in their gut, indicating that they grazed on terrestrial biofilm. The species of subgenus Liocosmius Casey of genus Bembidion Latreille are delimited and documented using DNA sequences from eight genes, morphological data, and geography. The subgenus consists of six known species, three of which are described as new: Bembidion orion Cooper and Maddison (California), B. darlingtonielum Cooper and Maddison (California), and B. cooperi Maddison (New Mexico and Arizona). The group ranges from British Columbia south to Baja California, and east to Colorado and New Mexico, with the centre of diversity in California. DNA from a pinned specimen collected in 1968 was sequenced using an Illumina platform, resulting in accurate data of all eight genes studied. In 2 consecutive years, ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were sampled in commercial organic and conventional potato fields, using pit fall traps. Four conventional and 3 organic potato fields were surveyed to determine ground beetle taxa composition. In a related study, potato fields were assigned to 1 of 4 transitional systems to include: organic, no spray (usually referred to as no control and/or only OMRI certified control), IPM-conventional (directed control, after sampling) and conventional (broad spectrum pesticides) systems. Seven taxa of ground beetles were identified: Anisodactylus kerbyi Lindroth 1953, Amara sp., Bembidion sp., Calosoma cancellatum Eschscholtz 1833, Calathus ruficollis Casey 1920, Calathus ingratus Dejean 1828, and Pterostichus adstrictus Eschscholtz 1823. With the exception of C. cancellatum, which was not identified from organic fields in the first yr of this study, all taxa were collected in both organic and conventional potato fields both yr. Based on total number of specimens collected, Bembidion sp., P. adstrictus and Amara sp. represented 42.8% of the total specimens collected. The smallest number of ground beetles was collected from no spray and IPM-conventional systems. This study provides basic valuable information regarding beetles populations for growers making transition from conventional to organic potato production.
