Tides significantly affect polar coastlines by modulating ice shelf melt and modifying shelf water properties through transport and mixing. However, the effect of tides on the marine carbonate chemistry in such regions, especially around Antarctica, remains largely unexplored. We address this topic with two case studies in a coastal polynya in the south-eastern Weddell Sea, neighbouring the Ekström Ice Shelf. The case studies were conducted in January 2015 (PS89) and January 2019 (PS117), capturing semi-diurnal oscillations in the water column. These are pronounced in both physical and biogeochemical variables for PS89. During rising tide, advection of sea ice meltwater from the north-east created a fresher, warmer, and more deeply mixed water column with lower dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) content. During ebbing tide, water from underneath the ice shelf decreased the polynya's temperature, increased the DIC and TA content, and created a more stratified water column. The variability during the PS117 case study was much smaller, as it had less sea ice meltwater input during rising tide and was better mixed with sub-ice shelf water. The contrasts in the variability between the two case studies could be wind and sea ice driven, and they underline the complexity and highly dynamic nature of the system. The variability in the polynya induced by the tides results in an air–seaCO2 flux that can range between a strong sink (−24 mmol m−2 d−1) and a small source (3 mmol m−2 d −1) on a semi-diurnal timescale. If the variability induced by tides is not taken into account, there is a potential risk of overestimating the polynya's CO2 uptake by 67 % or underestimating it by 73 %, compared to the average flux determined over several days. Depending on the timing of limited sampling, the polynya may appear to be a source or a sink of CO2. Given the disproportionate influence of polynyas on heat and carbon exchange in polar oceans, we recommend future studies around the Antarctic and Arctic coastlines to consider the timing of tidal currents in their sampling strategies and analyses. This will help constrain variability in oceanographic measurements and avoid potential biases in our understanding of these highly complex systems.

The decline in ocean oxygen content is one of the most alarming consequences of anthropogenic-driven climate change. A key challenge is that global climate models do not currently reproduce observed changes in deoxygenation, showing high inter-model variability and uncertainty. This uncertainty is partially due to the models’ inability to resolve features smaller than their computational grid cells resulting in large biases in ventilation. The Persian Gulf Water outflow has been pointed out by several studies as one of the sources of ventilation in the Arabian Sea Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). This oxygenated water mass flows eastward along the shelf edge of the northern Omani coast at 200m depth and is fragmented by the mesoscale eddy field and rough topography, generating small “peddies”. These peddies and their relatively high oxygen concentrations have potential to ventilate the OMZ, yet this has been poorly investigated due to a lack of adequate observations. We use multi-month glider campaigns off the coast of Oman with a SeaExplorer glider equipped with an ADCP to resolve the contribution of the Persian Gulf Water outflow to oxygen supply within the Arabian Sea OMZ. We characterize its properties, seasonality, and spatial distribution and estimate mixing rates from double diffusion, salt-fingering, and shear-driven mixing to understand water mass transformations and oxygen fluxes into the OMZ.

We present year-long, vertically-resolved, high-resolution observations of phytoplankton community and primary productivity in the Bornholm Basin of the Baltic Sea. Sustained high-resolution monitoring reveals how the small-scale environmental dynamics regulate the phytoplankton community composition and primary productivity in the Bornholm Basin. We combine data from the Swedish National Monitoring Program, collecting phytoplankton (abundance, biomass and productivity) and environmental (e.g. nutrients concentration) samples with remote sensing data and sustained observations from an Ocean Glider Observatory from March 2021 to 2022.The Ocean Glider Observatory continuously collected high-resolution physical (e.g.temperature, salinity) and biochemical (chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen) data (vertical resolutions at 10-centimetre scale and vertical profiles with a mean temporal resolution of ~37 min). Glider data are calibrated against remote sensing data, while in situ measurements of photosynthetic yield and community composition allow us to model community composition and primary productivity across the dataset.Accurate estimation of primary productivity reveals the importance of short term and rapid changes in near-surface stratification and the deep chlorophyll maximum for the Bornholm ecosystem. Vertically resolved glider estimates also highlight limitations of remote sensing methods in this cloud covered region. As phytoplankton plays a crucial role in the transfer of energy through the food web via zooplankton up to fish, the importance of sustained, continuous high-resolution observations is required to fully capture the magnitude and variability of ecosystem processes and consequences to productivity.

Much of the ice sheet within the catchment of Thwaites Glacier is grounded below sea level on bedrock that deepens inland4, making it susceptible to rapid and irreversible ice loss that could raise the global sea level by more than half a metre2,3,5. The rate and extent of ice loss, and whether it proceeds irreversibly, are set by the ocean conditions and basal melting within the grounding-zone region where Thwaites Glacier first goes afloat3,6, both of which are largely unknown. Here we show—using observations from a hot-water-drilled access hole—that the grounding zone of Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf (TEIS) is characterized by a warm and highly stable water column with temperatures substantially higher than the in situ freezing point. Despite these warm conditions, low current speeds and strong density stratification in the ice–ocean boundary layer actively restrict the vertical mixing of heat towards the ice base7,8, resulting in strongly suppressed basal melting. Our results demonstrate that the canonical model of ice-shelf basal melting used to generate sea-level projections cannot reproduce observed melt rates beneath this critically important glacier, and that rapid and possibly unstable grounding-line retreat may be associated with relatively modest basal melt rates. Shelf seas play a key role in both the global carbon cycle and coastal marine ecosystems through the draw-down and fixing of carbon, as measured through phytoplankton net primary production (NPP). Measuring NPP in situ and extrapolating this to the local, regional, and global scale presents challenges however because of limitations with the techniques utilised (e.g. radiocarbon isotopes), data sparsity, and the inherent biogeochemical heterogeneity of coastal and open-shelf waters. Here, we introduce a new data set generated using a technique based on the synergistic use of in situ glider profiles and satellite Earth observation measurements which can be implemented in a real-time or delayed-mode system (https://doi.org/10.5285/e6974644-2026-0f94-e053-6c86abc00109; Loveday and Smyth, 2022). We apply this system to a fleet of gliders successively deployed over a 19-month time frame in the North Sea, generating an unprecedented fine-scale time series of NPP in the region. At a large scale, this time series gives close agreement with existing satellite-based estimates of NPP for the region and previous in situ estimates. What has not been elucidated before is the high-frequency, small-scale, depth-resolved variability associated with bloom phenology, mesoscale phenomena, and mixed layer dynamics.

Antarctic sea ice plays a pivotal role in the global climate system. Forming a highly reflective,dynamic, and insulative blanket that varies seasonally in its areal coverage from ~3 × 106 km2to ~19–20 × 106 km2, sea ice and its snow cover strongly modifies ocean–atmosphere fluxes andinteraction processes (Bourassa et al. 2013). Moreover, brine rejection into the underlying oceanduring sea ice formation onsome continental shelf areasleads to the formationof Antarctic Bottom Waterthat contributes to the globalocean overturning circulation(Johnson 2008). Antarcticsea ice also acts as a protectivebuffer for ice shelvesagainst destructive oceanswells (Massom et al. 2018)and modulates the interactionof warm ocean waterswith ice shelf basal cavitiesto affect basal melt there(Timmermann and Hellmer2013). Finally, it also formsa key habitat for a myriad ofbiota—ranging from microorganismsto whales (Thomas2017)—that are strongly affectedby changes in the presenceand seasonal rhythms ofthe sea ice cover (e.g., Massomand Stammerjohn 2010).

Given the disproportionate influence of polynyas on heat and carbon exchange in polar oceans, we recommend that future studies around the Antarctic and Arctic coastlines consider the timing of tidal currents in their sampling strategies and analyses. This will help constrain variability in oceanographic measurements and avoid potential biases in our understanding of these highly complex systems.

High-resolution underwater glider data collected in the Gulf of Oman (2015-16), combined with reanalysis datasets, describe the spatial and temporal variability of the mixed layer during winter and spring. We assess the effect of surface forcing and submesoscale processes on upper ocean buoyancy and their effects on mixed layer stratification. Episodic strong and dry wind events from the northwest (Shamals) drive rapid latent heat loss events which lead to intraseasonal deepening of the mixed layer. Comparatively, the prevailing southeasterly winds in the region are more humid, and do not lead to significant heat loss, thereby reducing intraseasonal upper ocean variability in stratification. We use this unique dataset to investigate the presence and strength of submesoscale flows, particularly in winter, during deep mixed layers. These submesoscale instabilities act mainly to restratify the upper ocean during winter through mixed layer eddies. The timing of the spring restratification differs by three weeks between 2015 and 2016 and matches the sign change of the net heat flux entering the ocean and the presence of restratifying submesoscale fluxes. These findings describe key high temporal and spatial resolution drivers of upper ocean variability, with downstream effects on phytoplankton bloom dynamics and ventilation of the oxygen minimum zone.

Floating ice shelves buttress the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is losing mass rapidly mainly due to oceanic melting and the associated disruption to glacial dynamics. The local oceanic circulation near ice shelves is therefore important for the prediction of future ice mass loss and related sea-level rise as it determines the water mass exchange, heat transport under the ice shelf, and the resultant melting. However, the dynamics controlling the near-coastal circulation are not fully understood, particularly relating to seasonal and interannual changes in wind stress curl and ice cover. A gyre circulation (27 km radius, cyclonic) in front of the Pine Island Ice Shelf has been identified in both numerical models and velocity observations. In 2019 in the west of Thwaites Ice Shelf, for the first time in this habitually ice-covered region, another gyre circulation rotating in a different direction (13 km, anticyclonic) was detected by velocity observations. Here we use an idealised configuration of MITgcm, with idealised forcing based on ERA-5 climatological wind fields and simplified sea ice conditions from MODIS satellite images, to reproduce key features of the observed gyres near Pine Island Ice Shelf and Thwaites Ice Shelf. A barotropic version of the model is able to reproduce the gyres driven solely by the wind. We show that the modelled gyre direction depends upon the angle between the wind direction and the sea ice front. Gyres generated by wind in sea-ice-free conditions have directions controlled by the wind stress curl. When sea ice is present, the wind stress exerted on the sea surface is reduced, leading to a modified wind stress curl and a resultant change in gyre direction.

The Skagerrak and Kattegat are a narrow and shallow channel separating the North Sea and Baltic Sea. This highly dynamic area plays a key role in transforming water masses which flow into and oxygenate deep regions of the Baltic. This site is also a region of important carbon export, through advection down into and through the Norwegian Trench. This rich and productive ecosystem is strained by intensive human activity and shows strong coupling between biological and physical processes at a range of scales. We present data from a new autonomous observatory funded by the Voice of the Ocean Foundation. We compare data obtained from two underwater gliders and autonomous surface vehicles with that collected through regional monitoring programmes. Empirical variograms highlight the strong coupling between biological and physical parameters and the prevalence of small-scale processes not usually resolved in this region. We also present event-scale case studies showing variability in the coastal current and small scale export events. Finally, we outline the technical infrastructure and innovations of the Voice of the Ocean observatories and how to access its open data.

Tides have a large impact on coastal polynyas around Antarctica. We investigate the effect of semi-diurnal tidal cycles on the seawater carbonate chemistry in a coastal polynya hugging the Ekström Ice Shelf in the south-eastern Weddell Sea. This region experiences some of the strongest tides in the Southern Ocean. We assess the implications for the contribution of coastal polynyas to the carbon dioxide (CO2) air-sea flux of the Weddell Sea.Two site visits, in January 2015 and January 2019, are intercompared in terms of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration, total alkalinity, pH, and CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The tides induce large variability in the carbonate chemistry of the coastal polynya in the austral summer: DIC concentrations vary between 2174 and 2223 umol kg-1.The tidal fluctuation in the DIC concentration can swing the polynya from a sink to a source of atmospheric CO2 on a semi-diurnal timescale. We attribute these changes to the mixing of different water masses. The amount of variability induced by tides depends on – and is associated with – large scale oceanographic and biogeochemical processes that affect the characteristics and presence of the water masses being mixed, such as the rate of sea ice melt.Sampling strategies in Antarctic coastal polynyas should always take tidal influences into account. This would help to reduce biases in our understanding of how coastal polynyas contribute to the CO2 uptake by the Southern Ocean.

International audience; Habitat use by the endangered Mediterranean sperm whale subpopulation remains poorly understood, especially in winter. The sustained presence of oceanographic autonomous underwater vehicles in the area presents an opportunity to improve observation effort, enabling collection of valuable sperm whale distribution data, which may be crucial to their conservation. Passive acoustic monitoring loggers were deployed on vertically profiling oceanographic gliders surveying the north-western Mediterranean Sea during winter 2012-2013 and June 2014. Sperm whale echolocation ‘usual click’ trains, characteristic of foraging activity, were detected and classified from the recordings, providing information about the presence of sperm whales along the glider tracks. Widespread presence of sperm whales in the north-western Mediterranean Sea was confirmed. Winter observations suggest different foraging strategies between the Ligurian Sea, where mobile and scattered individuals forage at all times of day, and the Gulf of Lion, where larger aggregations target intense oceanographic features in the open ocean such as fronts and mixing events, with reduced acoustic presence at dawn. This study demonstrates the ability to successfully observe sperm whale behaviour from passive acoustic monitoring gliders. We identified possible mission design changes to optimize data collected from passive acoustic monitoring glider surveys and significantly improve sperm whale population monitoring and habitat use.

The fate of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest remaining uncertainty in predicting sea-level rise through the next century, and its most vulnerable and rapidly changing outlet is Thwaites Glacier . Because the seabed slope under the glacier is retrograde (downhill inland), ice discharge from Thwaites Glacier is potentially unstable to melting of the underside of its floating ice shelf and grounding line retreat, both of which are enhanced by warm ocean water circulating underneath the ice shelf. Recent observations show surprising spatial variations in melt rates, indicating significant knowledge gaps in our understanding of the processes at the base of the ice shelf. Here we present the first direct observations of ocean temperature, salinity, and oxygen underneath Thwaites ice shelf collected by an autonomous underwater vehicle, a Kongsberg Hugin AUV. These observations show that while the western part of Thwaites has outflow of meltwater-enriched circumpolar deep water found in the main trough leading to Thwaites, the deep water (> 1000 m) underneath the central part of the ice shelf is in connection with Pine Island Bay - a previously unknown westward branch of warm deep water flow. Mid-depth water (700 - 1000 m) enters the cavity from both sides of a buttressing point and large spatial gradients of salinity and temperature indicate that this is a region of active mixing processes. The observations challenge conceptual models of ice-ocean interactions at glacier grounding zones and identify a main buttressing point as a vulnerable region of change currently under attack by warm water inflow from all sides: a scenario that may lead to ungrounding and retreat more quickly than previously expected.

Echograms are used to visualize fisheries acoustic data, but choice of colour map has a significant effect on appearance. Quantitative echograms should use colour maps, which are colourful (have a perceived variety and intensity of colours), sequential (have monotonic lightness), and perceptually uniform (have consistency of perceived colour contrast over their range). We measure whether colour maps are colourful (M^(3)>0), sequential (rs=±1), and perceptually uniform (ρ = 1) using an approximately perceptually uniform colour space (CIELAB). Whilst all the fisheries acoustic colour maps tested are colourful, none is sequential or perceptually uniform. The widely used EK500 colour map is extremely colourful (M^(3)=186), not sequential (rs=0.06), and has highly uneven perceptual contrast over its range (ρ=0.26). Of the fisheries acoustic colour maps tested, the Large Scale Survey System default colour map is least colourful (M^(3)=79), but comes closest to being sequential (rs=−0.94), and perceptually uniform (ρ=0.95). Modern colour maps have been specifically designed for colour contrast consistency, accessibility for viewers with red-green colour-blindness, and legibility when printed in monochrome, and may be better suited to the presentation and interpretation of quantitative fisheries acoustic echograms.

Tides and tidal mixing fronts are of fundamental importance to understanding shelf sea dynamics and ecosystems. Ocean gliders enable the observation of fronts and tide-dominated flows at high resolution. We use dive-average currents from a 2-month (12 October–2 December 2013) glider deployment along a zonal hydrographic section in the north-western North Sea to accurately determine M2 and S2 tidal velocities. The results of the glider-based method agree well with tidal velocities measured by current meters and with velocities extracted from the TPXO tide model. The method enhances the utility of gliders as an ocean-observing platform, particularly in regions where tide models are known to be limited. We then use the glider-derived tidal velocities to investigate tidal controls on the location of a front repeatedly observed by the glider. The front moves offshore at a rate of 0.51 km day−1. During the first part of the deployment (from mid-October until mid-November), results of a one-dimensional model suggest that the balance between surface heat fluxes and tidal stirring is the primary control on frontal location: as heat is lost to the atmosphere, full-depth mixing is able to occur in progressively deeper water. In the latter half of the deployment (mid-November to early December), a front controlled solely by heat fluxes and tidal stirring is not predicted to exist, yet a front persists in the observations. We analyse hydrographic observations collected by the glider to attribute the persistence of the front to the boundary between different water masses, in particular to the presence of cold, saline, Atlantic-origin water in the deeper portion of the section. We combine these results to propose that the front is a hybrid front: one controlled in summer by the local balance between heat fluxes and mixing and which in winter exists as the boundary between water masses advected to the north-western North Sea from diverse source regions. The glider observations capture the period when the front makes the transition from its summertime to wintertime state. Fronts in other shelf sea regions with oceanic influence may exhibit similar behaviour, with controlling processes and locations changing over an annual cycle. These results have implications for the thermohaline circulation of shelf seas.

Quantifying the variability of North Sea inflows and understanding the temporal variability of their physical properties are essential for understanding, modelling and managing the ecosystems of the North Sea. The Joint North Sea Information System (JONSIS) line hydrographic section crosses the path of the main inflows of Atlantic water into the northwestern North Sea. We use observations from an autonomous underwater glider to observe the inflows at high spatial and temporal resolutions. The glider completed 10 partial sections of the JONSIS line in October and November of 2013. Key water masses of the inflow are identified; their spatial distribution varies greatly from section to section. This is not apparent from long-running ship surveys of the JONSIS line, which are generally several months apart. In particular, the distribution of water of most recent Atlantic origin varies as summer stratification decays throughout autumn: at the start of the deployment it is present as a thin layer beneath the thermocline; at the end of the deployment, it occupies the full depth of the water column. Thermohaline flow, i.e. that which is driven by horizontal density gradients, is focused into three or four jets (approximately 10 km wide). Jets as narrow as these have not previously been observed in the region. We also observe baroclinic eddies. The thermohaline transport of the inflows is compared with the absolute transport that is derived by referencing geostrophic shear to the glider's dive-average current. Thermohaline transport (approximately 0.2 Sv) is consistently smaller than absolute transport (approximately 0.5 Sv). The week-to-week variability in hydrography and flow structure identified in this study is relevant to on-going efforts to define a background state against which the nature of anthropogenic changes can be assessed, and future modelling efforts should represent the spatial and temporal variability that we have identified.

Wind speed measurements are needed to understand ocean–atmosphere coupling processes and their effects on climate. Satellite observations provide sufficient spatial and temporal coverage but are lacking adequate calibration, while ship- and mooring-based observations are spatially limited and have technical shortcomings. However, wind-generated underwater noise can be used to measure wind speed, a method known as Weather Observations Through Ambient Noise (WOTAN). Here, we adapt the WOTAN technique for application to ocean gliders, enabling calibrated wind speed measurements to be combined with contemporaneous oceanographic profiles over extended spatial and temporal scales. We demonstrate the methodology in three glider surveys in the Mediterranean Sea during winter 2012/13. Wind speeds ranged from 2 to 21.5 m s−1, and the relationship to underwater ambient noise measured from the glider was quantified. A two-regime linear model is proposed, which validates a previous linear model for light winds (below 12 m s−1) and identifies a regime change in the noise generation mechanism at higher wind speeds. This proposed model improves on previous work by extending the validated model range to strong winds of up to 21.5 m s−1. The acquisition, data processing, and calibration steps are described. Future applications for glider-based wind speed observations and the development of a global wind speed estimation model are discussed.

For the first time, the densities and diversity of microorganisms developed on ocean gliders were investigated using flow cytometry and Illumina MiSeq sequencing of 16S and 18S rRNA genes. Ocean gliders are autonomous buoyancy-driven underwater vehicles, equipped with sensors continuously recording physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Microbial biofilms were investigated on unprotected parts of the glider and surfaces coated with base, biocidal and chitosan paints. Biofilms on the glider were exposed to periodical oscillations of salinity, oxygen, temperature, pressure, depth and light, due to periodic ascending and descending of the vehicle. Among the unprotected surfaces, the highest microbial abundance was observed on the bottom of the glider’s body, while the lowest density was recorded on the glider’s nose. Antifouling paints had the lowest densities of microorganisms. Multidimensional analysis showed that the microbial communities formed on unprotected parts of the glider were significantly different from those on biocidal paint and in seawater.

At suboxic oxygen concentrations, key biogeochemical cycles change and denitrification becomes the dominant remineralization pathway. Earth system models predict oxygen loss across most ocean basins in the next century; oxygen minimum zones near suboxia may become suboxic and therefore denitrifying. Using an ocean glider survey and historical data, we show oxygen loss in the Gulf of Oman (from 6-12 to -1) not represented in climatologies. Because of the nonlinearity between denitrification and oxygen concentration, resolutions of current Earth system models are too coarse to accurately estimate denitrification. We develop a novel physical proxy for oxygen from the glider data and use a high-resolution physical model to show eddy stirring of oxygen across the Gulf of Oman. We use the model to investigate spatial and seasonal differences in the ratio of oxic and suboxic water across the Gulf of Oman and waters exported to the wider Arabian Sea.

The Ross Sea polynya is one of the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean. However, limited access and high spatio-temporal variability of physical and biological processes limit the use of conventional oceanographic methods to measure early season primary productivity. High-resolution observations from two Seagliders provide insights into the timing of a bloom in the southern Ross Sea polynya in December 2010. Changes in chlorophyll and oxygen concentrations are used to assess bloom dynamics. Using a ratio of dissolved oxygen to carbon, net primary production is estimated over the duration of the bloom showing a sensitive balance between net autotrophy and heterotrophy. The two gliders, observing spatially distinct regions during the same period, found net community production rates of -0.9±0.7 and 0.7±0.4 g C m-2 d-1. The difference highlights the spatial variability of biological processes and is probably caused by observing different stages of the bloom. The challenge of obtaining accurate primary productivity estimates highlights the need for increased observational efforts, particularly focusing on subsurface processes not resolved using surface or remote observations. Without an increased observational effort and the involvement of emerging technologies, it will not be possible to determine the seasonal trophic balance of the Ross Sea polynya and quantify the shelf’s importance in carbon export.

Measurements made by an underwater glider deployed near the Ross Ice Shelf were used to identify the presence of Ice Shelf Water (ISW), which is defined as seawater with its potential temperature lower than its surface freezing point temperature. Properties logged by the glider included in situ temperature, electrical conductivity, pressure, GPS location at surfacings and time. For most of the first 30 recorded dives of its deployment, evidence suggests the glider was prevented from surfacing due to being under the ice shelf. For dives under the ice shelf, farthest from the ice shelf front, ISW layers of varying thicknesses and depth locations were observed; between 2 m thick (centred at 231 m depth) to >93 m thick (centred at >360 m). For dives under the ice shelf, close to the ice shelf front, either no ISW was observed or ISW layers were centred at shallower depths (116–127 m). Thicker ISW layers (e.g. up to 250 m thickness centred at 421 m) were observed for some glider dives in open water in front of the Ross Ice Shelf. No in situ supercooling (water colder than the pressure-dependent freezing point temperature) was observed.

In situ plankton sampling, combined with remotely sensed and ocean Seaglider observations, provided insight into the termination of the winter monsoon bloom and subsequent evolution into a subsurface fluorescence maximum in the northwestern Arabian Sea. This subsurface maximum gradually descended, presenting increased fluorescence between 25 and 55 m depth during the spring inter-monsoon season. Species diversity decreased by half within the deep fluorescence maximum relative to the bloom. The dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans dominated by biomass in all samples collected from the depth of the subsurface fluorescence maximum. We show that the subsurface algal bloom persists throughout inter-monsoon seasons, linking algal blooms initiated during the southwest and northeast monsoons. In situ samples showed a net decrease in Noctiluca cell size, illustrating a shift towards a deep chlorophyll maximum adapted community, but did not exhibit any increases in chlorophyll-containing endosymbionts. We propose that the plankton biomass and estimates of the northwestern Arabian Sea productivity are much greater than estimated previously through remote sensing observations, due to the persistence, intensity and vertical extent of the deep chlorophyll maximum which—using remote means—can only be estimated, but not measured.

High-resolution autonomous glider data (including temperature, salinity, fluorescence, and optical backscatter) collected during the 2010-2011 austral summer identified variations in phytoplankton biomass along two glider sections near 76°40'S. Sea surface temperatures were warmer during the latter, westward section, while mixed layer depths were deeper. Substantial quantities of Modified Circumpolar Deep Water, identified by neutral density criteria, were located within both sections. Chlorophyll (Chl) concentrations computed from fluorescence exhibited daily quenching near the surface, and deep chlorophyll concentrations at 200. m became periodically elevated, suggesting substantial export on small space and time scales. The concentrations of particulate organic carbon (POC) computed from backscatter increased abruptly during the latter, westward section, concurrent with a decrease in chlorophyll. These higher POC:Chl ratios were not strongly correlated with presence of MCDW or with shallower mixed layer depths, but were strongly associated with higher surface temperatures and wind speed. The observed POC:Chl increase suggests a marked spatial and temporal transition between a Phaeocystis antarctica-dominated assemblage characterized by modest POC:Chl ratios to a diatom-dominated assemblage. Finally, a subsampling analysis highlights the capability of high-resolution glider data to resolve these biological/physical parameter correlations that are not discernible from lower frequency data typical of traditional cruise stations. © 2014 The Authors.

In stratified shelf seas, oxygen depletion beneath the thermocline is a result of a greater rate of biological oxygen demand than the rate of supply of oxygenated water. Suitably equipped gliders are uniquely placed to observe both the supply through the thermocline and the consumption of oxygen in the bottom layers. A Seaglider was deployed in the shallow (≈ 100 m) stratified North Sea in a region of known low oxygen during August 2011 to investigate the processes regulating supply and consumption of dissolved oxygen below the pycnocline. The first deployment of such a device in this area, it provided extremely high-resolution observations, 316 profiles (every 16 min, vertical resolution of 1 m) of conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD), dissolved oxygen concentrations, backscatter, and fluorescence during a 3-day deployment.The high temporal resolution observations revealed occasional small-scale events (< 200 m or 6 h) that supply oxygenated water to the bottom layer at a rate of 2 ± 1 µmol dm−3 day−1. Benthic and pelagic oxygen sinks, quantified through glider observations and past studies, indicate more gradual background consumption rates of 2.5 ± 1 µmol dm−3 day−1. This budget revealed that the balance of oxygen supply and demand is in agreement with previous studies of the North Sea. However, the glider data show a net oxygen consumption rate of 2.8 ± 0.3 µmol dm−3 day−1, indicating a localized or short-lived (The glider proved to be an excellent tool for monitoring shelf sea processes despite challenges to glider flight posed by high tidal velocities, shallow bathymetry, and very strong density gradients. The direct observation of these processes allows more up to date rates to be used in the development of ecosystem models.

In 2010-2011, three projects combined to characterize the temporal and spatial distributions of Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW) in the Ross Sea using icebreaker-based sampling, gliders, instrumented seals, and hindcasts from a numerical circulation model. The fieldwork clearly identified MCDW throughout the Ross Sea, and the data were used to determine its influence on potential heat and nutrient inputs and biotic distributions. Furthermore, the numerical simulations confirm its apparent trajectory and location. Substantial small-scale variability in oceanographic and biological distributions suggests that such variability may play an important role in biogeochemical cycles. Data from the three projects provide a view of hydrographic variability in the Ross Sea that is impossible to obtain using traditional sampling. Multiplatform investigations are promising approaches to future polar experiments where logistical considerations are of paramount importance. © 2014 by The Oceanography Society. Over the last couple of decades, autonomous underwater vehicles have become a powerful tool in the investigation of biological, chemical and physical oceanography. Not only do they complement existing technologies, they open up new avenues of investigation through their specific capabilities. For AUVs to benefit from the same success other long term monitoring platforms have had (moorings, ARGO), it is critical to understand their limits in both monitoring and process studies. We present results from several Seaglider deployments by the University of East Anglia where Seagliders were pushed to the limit of their abilities. Comparison of missions in extreme conditions at the limits of their depth range (70 to 1000 m) and battery life shows a need for tailored survey design and flight parameters in order to maximise mission duration, control over the Seaglider and most efficient science sampling. In particular, we look at post-processing of Seaglider data and present aspects of a new MATLAB toolbox which greatly improves on timestamp correction of Seaglider data by accounting for errors introduced by using a single thread processor.

Over the last several decades, numerous approaches have been used to observe the rapid development of the annual phytoplankton bloom in the Ross Sea, including ship-based sampling, moored instrumentation, satellite images, and computer modeling efforts. In the Austral Spring of 2010, our group deployed a pair of iRobot Seagliders equipped with fluorometers, oxygen sensors and CTDs in order to obtain data on this phenomenon over the entire duration of the bloom. Data from these deployments will be used, along with samples from the recovery cruise and satellite data, to model and better understand the dynamics of this phytoplankton bloom.

Prompted by recent observations of seasonal low dissolved oxygen from two moorings in the North Sea, a hydrographic survey in August 2010 mapped the spatial extent of summer oxygen depletion. Typical near-bed dissolved oxygen saturations in the stratified regions of the North Sea were 75–80 % while the well-mixed regions of the southern North Sea reached 90 %. Two regions of strong thermal stratification, the area between the Dooley and Central North Sea Currents and the area known as the Oyster Grounds, had oxygen saturations as low as 65 and 70 % (200 and 180 μmol dm−3) respectively. Low dissolved oxygen was apparent in regions characterised by low advection, high stratification, elevated organic matter production from the spring bloom and a deep chlorophyll maximum. Historical data over the last century from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea oceanographic database highlight an increase in seasonal oxygen depletion and a warming over the past 20 years. The 2010 survey is consistent with, and reinforces, the signal of recent depleted oxygen at key locations seen in the (albeit sparse) historical data.

Historical data from oceanographic expeditions and remotely sensed data on outgoing longwave radiation, temperature, wind speed and ocean color in the western Arabian Sea (1950–2010) were used to investigate decadal trends in the physical and biochemical properties of the upper 300 m. 72 % of the 29,043 vertical profiles retrieved originated from USA and UK expeditions. Increasing outgoing longwave radiation, surface air temperatures and sea surface temperature were identified on decadal timescales. These were well correlated with decreasing wind speeds associated with a reduced Siberian High atmospheric anomaly. Shoaling of the oxycline and nitracline was observed as well as acidification of the upper 300 m. These physical and chemical changes were accompanied by declining chlorophyll-a concentrations, vertical macrofaunal habitat compression, declining sardine landings and an increase of fish kill incidents along the Omani coast.
