Abstract

The low-lying dipole strength in the $^{90,94}$Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For $^{94}$Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for $^{90}$Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes.DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1$^{−}$ states in $^{90,94}$Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for $^{90}$Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of $^{94}$Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV.Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1$^{−}$ states below the particle binding energy.

Abstract

International audience; The gyromagnetic factor of the low-lying Ex=684.10(19)keV isomeric state of the nucleus 99Mo was measured using the time-dependent perturbed angular distribution technique. This level is assigned a spin and parity of Jπ=11/2−, with a half-life of T1/2=742(13)ns. The state of interest was populated and spin-aligned via a single-neutron transfer on a highly enriched 98Mo target. A magnetic moment μexpt.=−0.627(20)μN was obtained. This result is far from the Schmidt value expected for a pure single-particle νh11/2 state. A comparison of experimental spectroscopic properties of this nucleus is made with results of multishell Interacting boson-fermion Model (IBFM-1) calculations. In this approach, the Jπ=11/2− isomeric state in 99Mo has a pure νh11/2 configuration. Its magnetic moment, as well as that of other two excited states could be reasonably well reproduced by reducing the free neutron spin g factor with a quenching factor of 0.45. This low value is not appropriate only for this case, similar values for the quenching factor being also required in order to describe magnetic moments in other nuclei from the same mass region

Abstract

International audience; The gyromagnetic factor of the low-lying E=251.96(9) keV isomeric state of the nucleus Zr99 was measured using the time-dependent perturbed angular distribution technique. This level is assigned a spin and parity of Jπ=7/2+, with a half-life of T1/2=336(5) ns. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the abrasion-fission of a U238 primary beam at RIKEN RIBF. A magnetic moment |μ|=2.31(14)μN was deduced showing that this isomer is not single particle in nature. A comparison of the experimental values with interacting boson-fermion model IBFM-1 results shows that this state is strongly mixed with a main νd5/2 composition. Furthermore, it was found that monopole single-particle evolution changes significantly with the appearance of collective modes, likely due to type-II shell evolution.

Abstract

International audience; We report the first measurement of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moment of the exotic nucleus $^{132}$Sn by high-resolution laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE/CERN. These, in combination with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, demonstrate the single-particle character of the ground state of this short-lived isotope and, hence, the doubly-magic character of its immediate neighbor $^{132}$Sn. The trend of the electromagnetic moments along the $N=83$ isotonic chain, now enriched with the values of tin, are discussed on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations.

Abstract

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2− state in $^{207}$Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a $^{208}$Pb beam impinging on a $^{100}$Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2−→13/2+)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in $^{207}$Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in $^{207}$Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6+ state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation.

Abstract

The neutron-deficient cadmium isotopes have been measured by high-resolution laser spectroscopy at CERN-ISOLDE. The electromagnetic moments of 101Cd have been determined for the first time and the quadrupole-moment precision of 103Cd has been vastly improved. The results on the sequence of 5/2+ ground states in 101–109Cd are tentatively discussed in the context of simple structure in complex nuclei as similarities are found with the 11/2− states in the neutron-rich cases. Comparison with shell-model calculations reveals a prominent role of the two holes in the Z=50 core.

Abstract

International audience; The spin-alignment of fragments produced in spontaneous and neutroninducedfission reactions is found to be up to 40%. This amount of spin-alignmentallows the measurement of gyromagnetic factors of s isomeric states using the wellknown TDPAD method. This observable is a very sensitive probe of the singleparticlestructure of nuclear states and frequently allows one to determine thevalence nucleon configuration. Isomers produced by spontaneous fission are difficultto measure due to their low production rates and the ones produced by neutroninducedfission and selected in a spectrometer could not be measured because oneneeds to have fully stripped isotopes to preserve the spin-alignment in the vacuum.The measurement performed at the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator usingthe abrasion-fission reaction of a 238U80+ beam at 345 MeV/u energy on the N=5999mZr and 98mY will be presented. The obtained results show the opportunity toperform gyromagnetic factors measurement of neutron-rich s-isomers produced bythe abrasion-fission reaction.

Abstract

International audience; The excitation function of the $^{238}$U($^{9}$Be, 5$n$) reaction was obtained for the first time. By using a stack of uranium targets, 20 experimental data were obtained by the on-line irradiation without changing beam energy. Taking the advantage of the long lifetime and α decay mode of the residue nucleus $^{242}$Cm, the off-line measurement of the α radioactive was performed to obtain its yields. The maximum cross section is about 1 mb. The curve's shape and the maximum's position agree with the present model. The value of the cross section will help us to develop the ralated models, and push the nuclear studies in the transuranium region.

Abstract

International audience; A precise measurement of the g factor of the first-excited state in the self-conjugate (N = Z) nucleus Mg-24 is performed by a new time-differential recoil-in-vacuum method based on the hyperfine field of hydrogenlike ions. Theory predicts that the g factors of such states, in which protons and neutrons occupy the same orbits, should depart from 0.5 by a few percent due to configuration mixing and meson-exchange effects. The experimental result, g = 0.538 +/- 0.013, is in excellent agreement with recent shell-model calculations and shows a departure from 0.5 by almost 3 standard deviations, thus achieving, for the first time, the precision and accuracy needed to test theory. Proof of the new method opens the way for wide applications including measurements of the magnetism of excited states of exotic nuclei produced as radioactive beams.

Abstract

High-spin states of 187Ir have been populated in the 176Yb(15N, 4n) reaction and measured with the YRAST Ball spectrometer. The ?h9/2 rotational band has been extended beyond the first alignment crossing, which was found at rotational frequency ??c ? 0.39 MeV. Two different scenarios for describing this crossing are considered: The alignment of an h9/2 proton or i13/2 neutron pair and it is concluded that a proton band crossing is more likely. A systematic study of the rotational alignment crossings in the ?h9/2 bands in the N=104, 106, 108 isotopes of 73Ta, 75Re, 77Ir, and 79Au is presented.

Abstract

We report on the spectroscopic quadrupole moment measurement of the 7/2(1)(-) isomeric state in S-43(16)27 [E* = 320.5(5) keV, T-1/2 = 415(3) ns], using the time dependent perturbed angular distribution technique at the RIKEN RIBF facility. Our value, vertical bar Q(s) vertical bar = 23(3) efm(2), is larger than that expected for a single-particle state. Shell model calculations using the modern SDPF-U interaction for this mass region reproduce remarkably well the measured vertical bar Q(s) vertical bar, and show that non-negligible correlations drive the isomeric state away from a purely spherical shape. ispartof: Physical Review Letters vol:108 issue:16 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/LISE; Electric quadrupole moment Q of the 33Al ground state has been measured by means of β-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 33Al beam produced in a projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Qexp(33Al)| = 132(16) emb, shows a significant excess from the prediction of shell model calculations within the sd shell. The result indicates sizable admixing of pf intruder configurations in the ground state, demonstrating that the N = 20 shell closure certainly erodes in 33Al, a nucleus located on the border of the island of inversion. Comparison was made with predictions of the Monte Carlo shell model, and also a particle-vibration coupling model treating the neutron pairing correlations in the ground state of 33Al. Again, a significant admixture of pf intruder configurations to the 33Al ground state was needed in both theoretical approaches to explain the observed large Q .

Abstract

he spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the T-1/2 = 9.4(5) ns isomer in Pb-193 at an excitation energy E-ex = (2585 + x) keV is measured by the time-differential perturbed angular distribution method as vertical bar Q(s)vertical bar = 2.6(3) e b. Spin and parity I-pi = 27/2(-) are assigned to it based on angular distribution measurements. This state is the band head of a magnetic-rotational band, described by the coupling of a neutron hole in the 1i(13/2) subshell with the (3s(1/2)(-2)1h(9/2)1i(13/2))(11-) proton excitation. The pairing-plus-quadrupole tilted-axis cranking calculations reproduce the measured quadrupole moment with a moderate oblate deformation epsilon(2) = -0.11, similar to that of the 11(-)proton intruder states, which occur in the even-even Pb nuclei in the region. This is the first direct measurement of a quadrupole moment and thus of the deformation of a magnetic-rotational band head.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL, Spectrométre LISE-2000; We report on the g-factor measurement of the first isomeric state in 4316S27 [Ex = 320.5(5) keV, T1/2 = 415(5) ns, and g = 0:317(4)]. The 7/2- spin-parity of the isomer and the intruder nature of the ground state of the nucleus are experimentally established for the first time, providing direct and unambiguous evidence of the collapse of the N = 28 shell closure in neutron-rich nuclei. The shell model, beyond the mean-field and semiempirical calculations, provides a very consistent description of this nucleus showing that a well deformed prolate and quasispherical states coexist at low energy.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL, LISE; The g factors of the 17N and 18N ground states were remeasured using the β-nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) technique on spin-polarized fragment beams at the LISE fragment separator at GANIL. Based on the g-factor results, the magnetic moments of 17N (I π = 1/2−) and 18N (I π = 1−) were deduced: |μ(17N)| = 0.3551(4) μN and |μ(18N)| = 0.3273(4) μN. Both results are in good agreement with and more precise than the earlier observed values.

Abstract

The gamma decay from Coulomb excitation of 68Ni at 600 MeV/nucleon on a Au target was measured using the RISING setup at the fragment separator of GSI. The 68Ni beam was produced by a fragmentation reaction of 86Kr at 900 MeV/nucleon on a 9Be target and selected by the fragment separator. The gamma rays produced at the Au target were measured with HPGe detectors at forward angles and with BaF2 scintillators at backward angles. The measured spectra show a peak centered at approximately 11 MeV, whose intensity can be explained in terms of an enhanced strength of the dipole response function (pygmy resonance). Such pygmy structure has been predicted in this unstable neutron-rich nucleus by theory.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; International audience; The gyromagnetic factor of the isomeric state of 43S has been measured using the Time Dependent Perturbed Angular Distribution (TDPAD) technique. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the fragmentation of a 60 AMeV 48Ca beam at the GANIL facility. The deduced magnetic moment confirms the 7/2− spin/parity of the isomeric state and shows, for the first time, the intruder nature of the ground state. Comparison of the experimental values with Shell Model and mean-field based calculations were performed revealing a pronounced ground state deformation and a quasi-spherical isomeric state. A new isomeric state has been observed in the 42P.

Abstract

International audience; The Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) project is a major pan-European collaboration. Its physics aims are the studies of exotic nuclear matter with abnormal proton-to-neutron ratios compared with naturally occurring isotopes. RISING combines the FRagment Separator (FRS) which allows relativistic energies and projectile fragmentation reactions with EUROBALL Ge Cluster detectors for $\gamma$ spectroscopic research. The RISING setup can be used in two different configurations. Either the nuclei of interest are investigated after being stopped or the heavy ions hit a secondary target at relativistic energies and the thereby occurring excitations are studied. For the latter case, MINIBALL Ge detectors and the HECTOR array are used in addition. Example achievements of the Fast Beam setup are presented and compared to various shell model calculations, while for the Stopped Beam setup initial results are shown.

Abstract

Two high-spin regularly spaced rotational bands with large dynamical moments of inertia have been identified in 175Hf with the Gammasphere spectrometer. These new bands are very similar to the previously identified triaxial superdeformed bands in the hafnium nuclei. However, the new bands in 175Hf have been linked into the known level scheme and thereby provide the first firm spin assignments for these structures in this region. In order to understand the new bands, theoretical calculations have been performed based on the ULTIMATE CRANKER code. The new bands in 175Hf are deduced to be built upon highly deformed structures. No experimental evidence for triaxiality was established and this work suggests that the structure of the so-called "triaxial" superdeformed bands in the Hf nuclei may be quite different from those identified in the lighter mass Lu nuclei. Since the two highly deformed bands in 175Hf are associated with different deformations, this work also identifies the role of the intruder orbits in polarizing the nuclear shape.

Abstract

Abstract

Two different scenarios for describing this crossing are considered: The alignment of an h9/2 proton or i13/2 neutron pair and it is concluded that a proton band crossing is more likely. A systematic study of the rotational alignment crossings in the ?h9/2 bands in the N=104, 106, 108 isotopes of 73Ta, 75Re, 77Ir, and 79Au is presented.

Abstract

We report on the spectroscopic quadrupole moment measurement of the 7/2^_ isomeric state in ^_S_ [E^∗ =320.5(5) keV , T_=415(3) ns], using the time dependent perturbed angular distribution technique at the RIKEN RIBF facility. Our value, ∣Q_s∣=23(3) efm^2 , is larger than that expected for a single-particle state. Shell model calculations using the modern SDPF-U interaction for this mass region reproduce remarkably well the measured ∣Q_s∣, and show that non-negligible correlations drive the isomeric state away from a purely spherical shape.

Abstract

Electric quadrupole moment Q of the Al33 ground state has been measured by means of β-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized Al33 beam produced in a projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Qexp(33Al)|=132(16) emb, shows a significant excess from the prediction of shell model calculations within the sd shell. The result indicates sizable admixing of pf intruder configurations in the ground state, demonstrating that the N=20 shell closure certainly erodes in Al33, a nucleus located on the border of the island of inversion. Comparison was made with predictions of the Monte Carlo shell model, and also a particle-vibration coupling model treating the neutron pairing correlations in the ground state of Al33. Again, a significant admixture of pf intruder configurations to the Al33 ground state was needed in both theoretical approaches to explain the observed large Q.

Abstract

We have measured the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the 6− isomeric state in 66Cu to be |Qs|=18.6(12) efm2. This state results from a weak coupling of the πp3/2 and the νg9/2 orbitals, which lead to sizable deformation at oblate and prolate shapes, correspondingly, in the 68Ni region. The interplay between these two different deformation-driving orbitals is observed at N=37 for the 6− state resulting in a most probable oblate shape.
