In ecological forest management, it is essential to find compromises between environmental and society's economic demands. In intensively managed forests dominated by clear-cutting, the effect appears beyond the management area. The effects can be seen up to 120m from the clear-cut area. A variety in the size of clear-cuts creates different conditions for birds and biodiversity and might be useful management tool to create a diverse environment on the landscape level. Thinning is a common silvicultural practice in most forests, we found negative short-term effect, however, we do not consider long-term negative impact on biodiversity. Tree retention and deadwood conservation during the final felling is an essential tool for the creation of long-term close-to-natural conditions in forests.

Quercus robur/Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris are widely distributed and economically important tree species in Europe co-occurring on mesotrophic, xeric and mesic sites. Increasing dry conditions may reduce their growth, but growth reductions may be modified by mixture, competition and site conditions. The annual diameter growth in monospecific and mixed stands along an ecological gradient with mean annual temperatures ranging from 5.5 degrees C to 11.5 degrees C was investigated in this study. On 36 triplets (108 plots), trees were cored and the year-ring series were cross-dated, resulting in year-ring series of 785 and 804 trees for Q. spp. and P. sylvestris, respec-tively. A generalized additive model with a logarithmic link was fit to the data with random effects for the intercept at the triplet, year and tree level and a random slope for the covariate age for each tree; the Tweedie-distribution was used. The final model explained 87 % of the total variation in diameter increment for both tree species. Significant covariates were age, climate variables (long-term mean, monthly), local competition vari-ables, relative dbh, mixture, stand structure and interactions thereof. Tree growth declined with age and local density and increased with social position. It was positively influenced by mixture and structural diversity (Gini coefficient); mixture effects were significant for P. sylvestris only. The influence of potential evapotranspiration (PET) in spring and autumn on tree growth was positive and non-linear, whereas tree growth sharply decreased with increasing PET in June, which proved to be the most influential month on tree growth along the whole ecological gradient. Interactions of PET with tree social position (relative dbh) were significant in July and September for Q. spp. and in April for P. sylvestris. Interactions of climate with density or mixture were not significant. Climatic effects found agree well with previous results from intra-annual growth studies and indicate that the model captures the causal factors for tree growth well. Furthermore, the interaction between climate and relative dbh might indicate a longer growth duration for trees of higher social classes. Analysis of random effects across time and space showed highly dynamic patterns, with competitive advantages changing annually between species and spatial patterns showing no large-scale trends but pointing to the prevalence of local site factors. In mixed-species stands, the tree species have the same competitivity in the long-term, which is modified by climate each year. Climate warming will shift the competitive advantages, but the direction will be highly site-specific.

Many studies show that mixed species stands can have higher gross growth, or so-called overyielding, compared with monocultures. However, much less is known about mortality in mixed stands. Knowledge is lacking, for example, of how much of the gross growth is retained in the standing stock and how much is lost due to mor-tality. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap of mixed stand dynamics by evaluating 23 middle-aged, unthinned triplets of monospecific and mixed plots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) repeatedly surveyed over 6-8 years throughout Europe. For explanation of technical terms in this abstract see Box 1.First, mixed stands produced more gross growth (+10%) but less net growth (-28%) compared with the weighted mean growth of monospecific stands. In monospecific stands, 73% of the gross growth was accumu-lated in the standing stock, whereas only 48% was accumulated in mixed stands. The gross overyielding of pine (2%) was lower than that of beech (18%). However, the net overyielding of beech was still 10%, whereas low growth and dropout of pine caused a substantial reduction from gross to net growth.Second, the mortality rates, the self-and alien-thinning strength, and the stem volume dropout were higher in mixed stands than monospecific stands. The main reason was the lower survival of pine, whereas beech persisted more similarly in mixed compared with monospecific stands.Third, we found a 10% higher stand density in mixed stands compared with monospecific stands at the first survey. This superiority decreased to 5% in the second survey.Fourth, the mixing proportion of Scots pine decreased from 46% to 44% between the first and second survey. The more than doubling of the segregation index (S) calculated by Pielou index (S increased from 0.2 to 0.5), indicated a strong tendency towards demixing due to pine.Fifth, we showed that with increasing water supply the dropout fraction of the gross growth in the mixture slightly decreased for pine, strongly increased for beech, and also increased for the stand as a whole. We discuss how the reduction of inter-specific competition by thinning may enable a continuous benefit of diversity and overyielding of mixed compared with monospecific stands of Scots pine and European beech.

We identified knowledge gaps regarding boreal, hemiboreal and broadleaved evergreen forests, the treatments of large herbivore exclusion, prescribed burning and forest floor or water ma nipulations, and the monitoring of soil-dwelling organisms and some vertebrate classes, e.g., amphibians, reptiles and mammals. To improve multi-site comparisons, design of future experi ments should be fitted to the set-up of the ongoing projects and standardised biodiversity sam pling is suggested. However, the network described here opens the way to learn lessons on the impact on forest biodiversity of different management techniques at the continental level, and thus, supports biodiversity conservation in managed forests.

The European biodiversity and forest strategies rely on forest sustainable management (SFM) to conserve forest biodiversity. However, current sustainability assessments hardly account for direct biodiversity indicators. We focused on forest multi-taxon biodiversity to: i) gather and map the existing information; ii) identify knowledge and research gaps; iii) discuss its research potential. We established a research network to fit data on species, standing trees, lying deadwood and sampling unit description from 34 local datasets across 3591 sampling units. A total of 8724 species were represented, with the share of common and rare species varying across taxonomic classes: some included many species with several rare ones (e.g., Insecta); others (e.g., Bryopsida) were represented by few common species. Tree-related structural attributes were sampled in a subset of sampling units (2889; 2356; 2309 and 1388 respectively for diameter, height, deadwood and microhabitats). Overall, multitaxon studies are biased towards mature forests and may underrepresent the species related to other developmental phases. European forest compositional categories were all represented, but beech forests were overrepresented as compared to thermophilous and boreal forests. Most sampling units (94%) were referred to a habitat type of conservation concern. Existing information may support European conservation and SFM strategies in: (i) methodological harmonization and coordinated monitoring; (ii) definition and testing of SFM indicators and thresholds; (iii) data-driven assessment of the effects of environmental and management drivers on multi-taxon forest biological and functional diversity, (iv) multi-scale forest monitoring integrating in-situ and remotely sensed information. Heterogeneity of structure can increase mechanical stability, stress resistance and resilience, biodiversity and many other functions and services of forest stands. That is why many silvicultural measures aim at enhancing structural diversity. However, the effectiveness and potential of structuring may depend on the site conditions. Here, we revealed how the stand structure is determined by site quality and results from site-dependent partitioning of growth and mortality among the trees. We based our study on 90 mature, even-aged, fully stocked monocultures of Scots pine (Pines sylvestris L.) sampled in 21 countries along a productivity gradient across Europe. A mini-simulation study further analyzed the site-dependency of the interplay between growth and mortality and the resulting stand structure. The overarching hypothesis was that the stand structure changes with site quality and results from the site-dependent asymmetry of competition and mortality.First, we show that Scots pine stands structure across Europe become more homogeneous with increasing site quality. The coefficient of variation and Gini coefficient of stem diameter and tree height continuously decreased, whereas Stand Density Index and stand basal area increased with site index.Second, we reveal a site-dependency of the growth distribution among the trees and the mortality. With increasing site index, the asymmetry of both competition and growth distribution increased and suggested, at first glance, an increase in stand heterogeneity. However, with increasing site index, mortality eliminates mainly small instead of all-sized trees, cancels the size variation and reduces the structural heterogeneity.Third, we modelled the site-dependent interplay between growth partitioning and mortality. By scenario runs for different site conditions, we can show how the site-dependent structure at the stand level emerges from the asymmetric competition and mortality at the tree level and how the interplay changes with increasing site quality across Europe.Our most interesting finding was that the growth partitioning became more asymmetric and structuring with increasing site quality, but that the mortality eliminated predominantly small trees, reduced their size variation and thus reversed the impact of site quality on the structure. Finally, the reverse effects of mode of growth partitioning and mortality on the stand structure resulted in the highest size variation on poor sites and decreased structural heterogeneity with increasing site quality. Since our results indicate where heterogeneous structures need silviculture interventions and where they emerge naturally, we conclude that these findings may improve system understanding and modelling and guide forest management aiming at structurally rich forests.

Mixed-species stands have been found to be more productive than would be expected from the performance of their component species in monocultures due to facilitation and complementarity between species, although these interactions depend on the combination of species present. Our study focuses on monospecific and mixed species stands of Scots pine and Norway spruce using 20 triplets established in nine countries along a climatic gradient across Europe. Differences in mean tree and stand characteristics, productivity and stand structure were assessed. Basal area increment in mixed stands was 8% higher than expected while volume increment was only 2% greater. Scots pine trees growing in mixed-species stands showed 11% larger quadratic mean diameter, 7% larger dominant diameter, 17% higher basal area and 25% higher stand volume than trees growing in mono specific stands. Norway spruce showed only a non-significant tendency to lower mean values of diameters, heights, basal area, as well standing volume in mixtures than monocultures. Stand structure indices differed between mixed stands and monocultures of Scots pine showing a greater stratification in mixed-species stands. Furthermore, the studied morphological traits showed little variability for trees growing in monospecific stands, except for diameter at breast height, crown length and crown length ratio. For trees growing in mixed stands, all the morphological traits of the trees were identified as different. Some of these morphological traits were associated with relative productivity. Nevertheless, relative productivity in mixed-species stands was not related to site conditions.

Instituto de Ciencias Forestales (ICIFOR), Compared with far-developed measures and methods for mono-specific forest stands, the silvicultural prescriptions for mixed-species stands are at their early beginning. However, they are essential for the well-conceived establishment, design, and control of mixed-species stands, currently promoted in many countries worldwide. Here, we review the state of the art and we further develop silvicultural prescriptions for mixed-species stands for steering of experiments, stand modeling, and silviculture. We review which aspects of tree species mixing are most relevant for management goal achievement. We found the maintenance of species diversity and structural heterogeneity for ecological purpose, stabilizing productivity, and social-economic performance as main objectives. We give an overview of quantitatively formulated silvicultural prescriptions for steering mixed-species stands for forest practice, long-term experiments, forest stand models. Compared with the sophisticated guidelines for mono-specific stands, prescriptions for mixed stand are often mainly qualitative and vague. Then, we introduce methodological approaches in development for steering mixture: measures for spatial and temporal separation, species-specific growing space requirements for crop trees, coefficients for equivalence and density modification, and basic relationships for steering tree number and area-based mixing proportions. Finally, we draw conclusions for further development of methodological approaches for silvicultural steering of experiments, implementation in stand simulators, and for silvicultural operations. We see the need for improving the quantitative spatially explicit rules based at tree or cohort level, for substantiating the knowledge on species-specific allometry, growing area, tree-to-tree distances, and position-dependent competition indices for steering tree removal. We discuss the prospects and limitations of establishing silvicultural prescriptions for mixed-species stands that inevitably will be more complicated than those for mono-specific stands, and we draw conclusions for next steps in science and practice., The authors wish to thank the European Union for funding the projects "Mixed species forest management. 15 Pág. Ecological Modelling, Tree species mixing of oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl./Quercus robur L.) and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) has been shown to have positive effects on ecosystem service provision. From a management perspective, however, it is still uncertain which thinning regime provides the highest possible productivity of mixed oak–pine forests in the long term. Because of a lack of empirical studies dealing with thinning and species mixing effects on oak–pine forests, we simulated forest growth in order to test which thinning type and intensity may provide the highest productivity in the long-term. To achieve this, we simulated the growth of pure and mixed stands of oak and pine for 100 years in 23 triplets located on an ecological gradient across Europe. For this purpose, we applied four different growth simulators and compared their results: the distance-independent single-tree simulator PROGNAUS, the distance-dependent single-tree simulator SILVA, the gap model ForCEEPS, and the process-based simulator 3D-CMCC-FEM. We investigated the effects of species mixing and thinning from the upper (thinning from above) and lower tail (thinning from below) of the diameter distribution by reducing the stand basal area to 50 and 80% of the maximum basal area. We compared simulated results of the relative volume productivity of mixed versus pure stands and of thinned versus unthinned stands to empirical results previously obtained on the same set of triplets. Simulated relative volume productivity ranged between 61 and 156%, although extremes of 10% and of 300% could be observed. We found the relative volume productivity to be influenced by stand age, but not by stand density, except for PROGNAUS. Relative volume productivity did not increase with the site water supply of the triplet location. Highest long-term productivity for oak, pine and oak–pine stands can be expected in consequence of thinning from above, but the effect of thinning intensity differed between simulators. Thinning effects were positively affected by stand density, but not by stand age, except for thinning from above predicted by PROGNAUS. Predicted thinning effects showed good approximation of results from thinning experiments for oak, but not for pine stands. We hypothesize the results might be caused by the insufficient simulator representation of climate and its interaction with other site variables and stand structure. A Thesis for applying for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Forestry The doctoral thesis focuses on the influence of long-term local weather variation on Scots pine growth on a temporal and spatial scale. Dendrochronological methods were used to determine the most influential climatic factors affecting Scots pine radial growth. Since the site index is commonly used in forest growth and yield models as a proxy to describe site productivity, possible climate change impacts on long-term tree height growth were analysed using the site index comparison approach. The findings of a case study in South Estonia were based on the annual growth of three retrospectively reconstructed generations growing in different periods of time which showed that pine trees established after 1960 had elevated growth rates compared to stands established decades earlier. Over a longer time span, this resulted in different cumulative growth patterns and a higher site index. Meteorological data evidenced that thermal climatic conditions for the youngest trees established around 1970 were significantly warmer compared to the time period when the oldest trees were growing, which positively contributed to accelerated growth. Tree-ring analysis from more than 900 Scots pine trees revealed that radial growth response to annual weather fluctuations varied in Estonia on the spatial scale and depended on local climatic circumstances as well as on ecological site conditions. According to the results of the studies conducted within the framework of this thesis, late winter/early spring temperatures and meteorological water availability in late summer prior to the ring formation season are the main climatic factors driving Scots pine growth in Estonia. The thesis also elaborated a basal area increment model for individual trees, which incorporates the effect of thinning and climate related influences. The results of this thesis demonstrate how important it is to account temporal and spatial climatic variability on tree growth, even in such a small country like Estonia, especially in research when making comparisons between different sub-regions or referring to past tree growth. Doktoritöö fookuses on uurida ilmastiku pikaajalise varieerumise mõjusid hariliku männi kasvule nii ajalisel kui ka ruumilisel skaalal. Töös on kasutatud hariliku männi kõrgus- ja radiaalkasvu enim mõjutavate klimaatiliste tunnuste välja selgitamiseks retrospektiivse tüveanalüüsi ja dendrokronoloogilisi meetodeid. Puistu kasvufunktsioonides on kõrgusindeks sageli kasutuses kasvukoha kasvupotentsiaali hindava tunnusena, seepärast analüüsiti töös kõrguskasvu mõjutava ilmastiku muutumise pikaajalist mõju kõrgusindeksite võrdlusmeetodi abil. Retrospektiivse tüveanalüüsi tulemusena erinesid kolme hariliku männi põlvkonna juurdekasv oluliselt ning pärast 1960. aastat kasvama hakanud puudele oli omane palju kiirem kasv kui kümnendeid varasema kasvualgusega puudele. Sellest tulenevalt on nii kumulatiivne kasvukõver kui ka kõrgusindeksid suuremad. Meteoroloogiliste andmete analüüs näitas, et 1970. aasta ja hilisema kasvualgusega puude kasvuajal valitsesid oluliselt soojemad temperatuurid kui kahel varasemal kasvuperioodil, mis omakorda mõjus kasvu kiirenemisele positiivselt. Rohkem kui 900 hariliku männi aastarõngaste laiuse dendroklimaatiline analüüs näitas, et ilmastiku muutumise mõju radiaalkasvule on Eestis piirkonniti oluliselt erinev ning sõltub eelkõige piirkondlike kliimatunnuste ja kasvukohatingimuste koosmõjust. Analüüsi tulemustest saab välja tuua, et Eestis mõjutavad hariliku männi kasvu positiivselt kõige enam hilistalvised/varakevadised temperatuurid ning samuti on oluline taimeaktiivse vee kättesaadavus suvel varaspuidu moodustumise ajal. Doktoritöös on esitatud koos analüüsiga kohalike kliimatingimuste ja raiete mõju siduv rinnaspindala juurdekasvumudel. Doktoritöö tulemused näitavad, et kliimamuutuste ajalist ja ruumilist mõju puude kasvule ei tohiks alahinnata, seda eriti võrreldes Eesti erinevaid geograafilisi piirkondi või analüüsides puude kasvu varasematel perioodidel.

Darbo metu buvo nustatyti baltojo gandro gausumo ir erdvinio pasiskirstymo bei lizdaviečių pasirinkimo pokyčiai 1994–2010 metais, ištirti perėjimo buveinės pasirinkimo dėsningumai bei perėjimo sėkmingumo priklausomybė nuo kai kurių buveinės charakteristikų. Baltojo gandro perėjimo buveinės pasirinkimo tyrimai atlikti su 8,4 % pasaulinės perinčios baltojo gandro populiacijos, esančios arealo šiaurės vakarų periferijoje, susitelkusios teritorijoje, užimančioje 1,1 % arealo ploto. Buvo nustatyta, kad tyrimų teritorijoje per 1994–2010 metų laikotarpį ženkliai išaugus baltojo gandro gausumui, paukščiai prisitaikė perėti naujo tipo lizdavietėse – ant elektros oro linijų atramų. Šis prisitaikymas reprodukciniu požiūriu buvo iš dalies neadaptyvus dėl patikimai mažesnio perėjimo sėkmingumo lizduose, susuktuose ant eksploatuojamų elektros oro linijų atramų. Remiantis ilgalaikiais baltojo gandro pirmo atskridimo datos duomenimis, rinktais 1961–2000 metais, buvo nustatytas reikšmingas pavasarinio atskridimo datos į perimvietes arealo šiaurės vakarų periferijoje paankstėjimas. Taip pat buvo nustatyti veiksniai, lemiantys pirmo pavasarinio atskridimo į perimvietes datą. Darbe buvo nustatyti pagrindiniai, perinčiam baltajam gandrui grėsmę keliantys veiksniai, įvertintas jų reikšmingumas ir pasiūlytos neigiamo jų poveikio šiai Europos Sąjungoje saugomai rūšiai sumažinimo priemonės. Baigiamajame darbe aptariami kirtavietėse paliekamų pušies biologinės įvairovės medžių ilgalaikio išlikimo neigiamiems aplinkos veiksniams tyrimo rezultatai. Darbo tikslas – surinkti ir įvertinti Nemenčinės miškų urėdijos kirtavietėse paliekamų biologinės įvairovės medžių būklę, kiekį ir išlikimą kirtavietėje. Darbo objektas – plyno kirtimo biržės ir jose palikti biologinės įvairovės medžiai. Darbo metodika. Mokslinės literatūros analizės pagrindu teoriniu aspektu buvo gilinamasi į biologinės įvairovės svarbą ir jos apsaugos priemonių kūrimą bei taikymą. Šiam tikslui pasiekti studijuojamos lietuvių bei užsienio autorių knygos, moksliniai straipsniai, internetinė medžiaga, susijusi su nagrinėjama tema. Tyrimo metu buvo analizuojami keli parametrai: medžių atsparumas aplinkos poveikiams, medžių ilgalaikis išlikimas priklausantis nuo kirtavietės ploto, reljefo, paklotės storio. Darbo rezultatai. Tyrimo metu buvo susisteminta medžių paliekamų bioįvairovei tendencija. Buvo tirtos trijų skirtingų kirtimų metų šešios kirtavietės. Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad į medžių paliekamų bioįvairovei būklę vis daugiau atsižvelgiama. Kirtimų metu paliekama vis didesnės įvairovės medžių, kurie atrenkami pagal normatyvus, kad būtų kuo ilgaamžiškesnis jų išlikimas. Nemenčinės miškų urėdijoje kirtavietėse po kirtimo praėjus daugiau nei 5 metams daugiausia išliko gyvybingų – žalių – medžių 77 proc. ir tik 23 proc. kitokių nudžiuvusių, nulaužtų ir išverstų medžių. Aim of the work – assemble and evaluate the condition, quantity and survival of the trees, left for biological diversity in clear cutting areas in Nemenčinės forestry enterprise. Object of the work – The trees left for the biological diversity in clear cutting areas. Methods of the work – the theoretical aspect of the importance of biodiversity and its conservation and development of the application were analyzed in literature. To achieve this, the Lithuanian and foreign authors, books, scientific articles, online material related to the topic were studied. The study included the analysis of several parameters: tree resistance to environmental factors, long-term survival of the trees from harvesting area, terrain. Result of work - during the studies the biodiversity trend of the pine trees left in the wood clearcuts was structured. Six clearings in three different harvest years have been tested. It have been stated that more and more attention for the biodiversity is considered. During the clear cuttings bigger variety of the trees are left. These trees are selected according to the guidelines in order to make the more durable. After more than 5 years in the Nemenčinės forestry enterprise - the majority of trees in the clearcut forest - 77 % of them - are well growing, lush green trees. Baigiamajame darbe tiriama bebrų įtaka VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijos medynams. Darbo objektas – Vilniaus miškų urėdijos girininkijų miškuose esanti bebrų populiacija ir jų įtaka aplinkai. Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti ir įvertinti bebrų įtaką medynams VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijos miškuose. Tikslui įgyvendinti buvo iškelti tokie uždaviniai: 1. Nustatyti bebrų gausą ir tankį Vilniaus urėdijos miškuose. 2. Nustatyti bebraviečių pasiskirstymą urėdijos girininkijų miškuose. 3. Įvertinti bebrų poveikį medynams. Darbo metodai – literatūros analizė, bebraviečių įvertinimas, bebrų veiklos žymių analizė – fotofiksacija. Naudojama kartografinė medžiaga, miškotvarkos duomenys, atliekama bebrų apskaita, vertinamas poveikis medynams. Išsamesni bebrų populiacijos būklės ir veiklos tyrimai atlikti VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijos dvylikos girininkijų teritorijose 2012 – 2014 metų rudenį, žiemą ir pavasarį. Pirminiai duomenys apie bebraviečių išsidėstymą, klasifikaciją, įtaką aplinkai buvo renkami iš miškininkų bei miškotvarkos pateiktos informacijos. Tai buvo tikslinama natūroje, ieškomos naujos bebravietės. Darbo rezultatai. Atlikus tyrimą nustatyta, kad Vilniaus urėdijos miškuose yra 67 bebravietės. The subjekt of research – beaver population living in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise and its influence on the environment. The aim of the research – to analyze and evaluate the influence of beaver activity on forest stands in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise. The achieve the aim, the following tasks were raised: 1. To determine the abundance and density of beaver population in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise. 2. To ascertain the distribution of beaver lodges in the forests og the enterprise. 3. To assess the influence of beaver activity on forest stands. Darbo objektas. Danieliai, gyvenantys VĮ Alytaus miškų urėdijos Sudvajų girininkijos Sudvajų, Kalnėnų ir Nemunaičio miškuose. Darbo tikslas. Išsiaiškinti danielių aklimatizacijos eigą VĮ Alytaus miškų urėdijoje. Darbo metodai: • Gyvenamosios aplinkos tinkamumo vertinimas. • Danielių kiekybinė ir kokybinė apskaita. • Laisvėje gyvenančių danielių apskaita pagal ekskrementus. • Danielių žievės laupymo poveikio įvertinimas žėliniams, želdiniams ir medynams. Darbo rezultatai. VĮ Alytaus miškų urėdijos Sudvajų girininkijos Sudvajų, Kalnėnų ir Nemunaičio miškų masyvų plotas yra tinkamas danielių populiacijai gyventi. Gyvenamoji aplinka yra įvertinta 64 balais, o šis balų skaičius parodo, kad danielių gyvenamoji aplinka priklauso vidutinių plotų kategorijai. Šiuo metu Sudvajų, Kalnėnų ir Nemunaičio miškuose gyvenančių danielių populiacijos tankis siekia 11 vnt. / 1000 ha. Tai beveik optimalus tankis, atsižvelgiant į vyraujančią miško sudėtį (gryni pušynai su nedidesne kaip 10 % kitų medžių rūšių priemaiša). Nuo 2007 iki 2011 metų danielių skaičius Sudvajų girininkijoje nuolat didėjo. Per šį laikotarpį danielių, gyvenančių laisvėje, padaugėjo nuo 13 iki 52 vienetų. Pastaruoju laikotarpiu danielių skaičius stabilizavosi ir siekia 49-52 vienetus. Stabilizacijos tendenciją galima paaiškinti iš dalies intensyvesne medžiokle, iš dalies – gyvenamąja aplinka. 2014 metais danielių prieaugis sudarė 6,5 %. Šis rodiklis yra mažesnis už vidutinį. Fallow-deer living in Sudvajai, Kalnenai and Nemunaitis forests of Alytus Forest Enterprise Sudvajai Forest District. Aim of work – to examine the course of fallow-deer naturalization in the territory of Alytus Forest Enterprise. Methods of work: • Assessment of the suitability of dwelling surroundings. • Quantitative and qualitative counting of fallow-deer. • Counting of freely-roaming fallow-deer by excrements. • Impact evaluation of bark peeling by fallow-deer to plants, afforested areas and tree stands. Findings of work. The area of Sudvajai, Kalnenai and Nemunaitis forests expanse in Alytus Forest Enterprise Sudvajai Forest District is suitable for the dwelling of fallow-deer population. The dwelling surroundings were rated at 64 points, ascribing the dwelling surroundings of fallow-deer to the category of moderate areas. At this moment in Sudvajai, Kalnėnai and Nemunaitis forests the density of fallow-deer is 11 units / 1000 ha. At 2007-2011 years the number of fallow deers was increased steadily in Sudvajai district. The number of fallow deers, which lived in freedom, was increased from 13 to 52 units. At least time the number of fallow-deer was stabilized and now seeks about 49-52 units. The herd composition is satisfactory. Ratio of males and females is 1 : 2,8. Šio magistrinio darbo tikslas buvo identifikuoti veiksnius darančius įtaką privataus miško savininkų ir valstybinio miško valdytojų, miškininkavimo sprendimų priėmimui. Šio tikslo įgyvendinimui buvo atliktos kokybinės apklausos dviejuose tyrimo vietovėse: „Suvalkijoje“ ir „Žemaitijoje“. Duomenų analizei buvo pasitelkti kokybinės analizės metodai. Tyrimo metu buvo paklausti 29 respondentai: 18 privataus miško savininkų ir 11 valstybinių miškų valdytojų. Analizuojant duomenis buvo atskleisti veiksniai darantys įtaką privataus miško savininkų ir valstybinio miško valdytojų miškininkavimo sprendimams. Nustatyta, kad miškininkavimo sprendimų priėmimui įtakos turi vidiniai (įvairios motyvacijos ir tikslai) ir išoriniai veiksniai (gamtinės sąlygos, teisinis reguliavimas, visuomenės poreikiai). Remiantis darbo rezultatų analize buvo išskirtos keturios privataus miško savininkų miškininkavimo motyvacijų grupės: paslaugos; aplinkosauga; socialinės funkcijos; ekonomika. Atskleista, kad privataus miško savininkų miškininkavimo sprendimams įtaką daro grupė motyvacijų. Valstybinio miško valdytojų apklausų kokybinė analizė nustatyta, kad valstybinių miškų valdytojai vadovaujasi ne tik miškininkavimą reguliuojančiais dokumentais, bet jų darbo sprendimams įtaką daro asmeninis požiūris į miškininkavimą. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] In this master thesis, analysis was done to identify factors influencing the decision making process of private forest owners and state forest managers’. In order to identify these factors an interview method was used throughout, this involved qualitative inquiries into two research areas: “Suvalkija” and “Žemaitija”. Data analysis was also performed using qualitative methods. During the research, 29 interviews were conducted: 18 with private forest owners and 11 with state forest managers. Results of the analysis revealed the following main factors that affected the decision making process of private forest owners and state forest managers. The main factors were internal factors such as motivations and objectives. Fr main groups of motivations and objectives of private forest owners were found: amenities, environmental protection, social and economic. The study showed that usually there is not one but multiple motivations and objectives affecting the decision making process. Qualitative analysis of state forest managers’ interviews revealed that they make decisions not only following rules and regulations but also are driven by their individual view about forestry. Magistro baigiamąjame darbe tiriamas biohumuso poveikis paprastųjų eglių (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) sėjinukų augimui atvirame grunte. Tyrimo objektas - vienerių metų paprastosios eglės sėjinukai. Tyrimų tikslas: nustatyti ekologiškos organinės trąšos - biohumuso įtaką paprastosios eglės sėjinukų augimui, vystymuisi, išlikimui, išeigai iš ploto vieneto, ekonominiam efektyvumui. Tyrimo metodai. Loginė mokslinės literatūros apžvalga, apskaitos aikštelių ir duomenų statistinio apdorojimo metodai. Darbo uždaviniai. Nustatyti biohumuso įtaką paprastosios eglės vienmečių sėjinukų augimui ir vystymuisi. Įvertinti vermikomposto įtaką sėjinukų išlikimui ir išeigai iš ploto vieneto. Atlikti biohumuso panaudojimo ekonominį įvertinimą. Darbo rezultatai. Paprastosios eglės vienamečių sėjinukų antžeminės dalies augimą, iš šešių tirtų biohumuso normų, labiausiai įtakojo 20 t/ha norma. Ji esmingai padidino sėjinukų aukštį, spyglių skaičių ir jų ilgį, o jos poveikis sėjinukų skersmeniui, šoninių ūglių skaičiui bei jų ilgiui, šoninių pumpurų skaičiui buvo analogiškas kaip ir mineralinių trąšų. Lyginant sėjinukų šaknų sistemas, biohumuso 10, 20 ir 30 t/ha normos patikimai padidino eglaičių pagrindinės šaknies ilgį (labiausiai – 20 t/ha), o pirmos eilės šoninių šaknų skaičių teigiamai įtakojo tik biohumuso 20 t/ha norma, palyginti su mineralinėmis trąšomis. Efektyviausiai sėjinukų bendrąją, antžeminės dalies ir šaknų masę padidino biohumuso 20 t/ha norma. Be to, biohumusas labiau skatino... The object of the research – the one year old seedling of Norway spruce. Research aim is to test the influence of biohumus on the growth, development, survival, amount of the seedling of Norway spruce from 1 hectare and its economikcal effect. Research methods. The review of logical scientific literature, the methods of statistic analysis of the data of the examined areas. Research objectives. To define the influence of biohumus on the growth and development of one year old seedling. To assess the influence of vermicompost on the seedling survival and harvest from one hectare. To perform the economical evaluation of the use of biohumus. Research results. The growth of a year old seedling from the six tested norms with biohumus was mostly influenced by 20 t/ha norm. It eesentially encreased the height of the seedling, the number and length of the needles. Its effect on the widh of the seedling, the number of the side branches, their length and the amount of the side buds was equivalent to the mineral fertilizers. By comparising the systems of the roots, the norms of biohumus 10, 20 and 30, evidentally encreased the length of the main roots of the Norway spruce (mostly 20 t/ha). Darbo objektas - įvairaus amžiaus centrinio puvinio pažeisti eglės medžiai, kurie auga skirtinguose našumo rajonuose. Darbo tikslas – centrinio puvinio paplitimo tipinėse paprastosios eglės augavietėse (Nc, Nd, Lb, Lc, Ld) vertinimo garsiniu tomografu ARBOTOM 3D galimybių tyrimas. Darbo metodai – duomenys apie puvinio išplitimą rinkti naudojant garsinį tomografą Arbotom 3D. Surinkti duomenys apdoroti naudojant MS Excel, Statistica ir Arbotom programas. Atliekant tyrimą buvo naudoti tokie bendrieji metodai: dokumentų analizės, duomenų grupavimo, modeliavimo, loginis, palyginimo, apibendrinimo. Rezultatai – Duomenys buvo renkami 4 gamtiniuose – našumo rajonuose.Tyrimo metu pamatuota 3269 medžiai iš kurių 703 nuskenuota garsiniu tomografu. Darbo metu nustatyta, kad vaizdus, gautus garsinio tomografo Arbotom 3D pagalba, galima apdoroti su 85,44 proc patikimumu. Geriausiai puvinio buvimo stiebe faktą nusako ne absoliutus garso sklidimo greitis medienoje, bet minimalaus ir maksimalaus greičių sklidimo skirtumo santykis su mažiausiu sklidimo greičiu, bei stiebo skersmeniu 1.3 m aukštyje. Modeliuojant puvinio buvimo tikimybę Lietuvos mastu, modelyje tikslinga papildomai naudoti medžių amžių bei našumo rajoną. Didžiausias puvinio pažeistų medžių procentas buvo nustatytas IV (38,7 proc.) ir I ( 37,8 proc) Krafto klasės medžiams, II ir III klasėje pažeistų medžių buvo atitinkamai 28 proc. ir 34 proc. Aim of work – to investigate the possibilities of ARBOTOM 3D to identify the spread of core rot in Norway spruce regarding to forest type sites (Nc, Nd, Lb, Lc, Ld). Methods of work – material respecting rot spread were collected using tomography ARBOTOM 3D. Collected data was analyzed using Statistica, Excell and Arbotom software applications The following common scientific methods were used in this research: data analyzes, data grouping, modelling logic, comparison, syntheses. Results of work – The data of the research was collected in 4 State forests enterprises in respect to regions of natural forest productivity. In this study, 27 spruce stands of different age were choosen using random selection. The trees parameters were estimated for 3269 spruces, 703 out of estimated trees were scanned using acoustic tomography to determine the spread of rot inside stems. The reliability of 85.55 percentages was reached using ARBOTOM. The results of research revealed, that the most success approach to identify the rot in a stem was the ratio difference between maximal and minimas velocity to minimum velocity also stem diameter in 1.3 meter. Magistro darbe tiriama elninių žvėrių populiacijos Jurbarko rajono savivaldybės teritorijoje. Darbo objektas – Jurbarko rajono savivaldybės teritorijos miškų elniniai žvėrys. Darbo tikslas – Įvertinti Jurbarko rajono savivaldybės teritorijojos elninių žvėrių populiacijų gausos ir tankio dinamiką, kokybę pagal ragus ir sumedžiojimo dinamiką. Darbo metodai – Žvėrių gausos ir sumedžiojimo duomenys paimti iš Aplinkos ministerijos oficialių ataskaitų. Elninių žvėrių vertinimo pagal atrankos grupes metodas. Leidinių, literatūros šaltinių analizės metodas, lyginamosios analizės metodas. Darbo rezultatai – Tyrimo metu nustatyta elninių žvėrių popukiacijos dinamika. Nuo 2008 iki 2011 metų briedžių populiacija padidėjo 32%, taurių elnių – 32%, stirnų – 29%. Visų trijų elninių žvėrių lyčių santykis atitinka mėsinės krypties medžioklės ūkio organizavimo principus. Briedžių populiacija nesudaro mažiausio leistino tankio, todėl medžioklė draudžiama, tauriųjų elnių populiacija viršija ekologinį tankį, todėl tikslinga jų gausą reguliuoti intensyviau, kad nebūtų padaryta didelė žala miškų ir žemės ūkiui, stirnų populiačija artėja prie ekologinio tankio ribos, todėl tikslinga gausą reguliuoti intensyviau. Per praėjusius keturis medžioklės sezonus sumedžiota santykinai daugiau atrankinių tauriųjų elnių patinų, o atrankinių stirninų sumedžiojimas padidėjo net 41%, nei prieš 10 metų. Object of work– Deer animals of Jurbarkas district municipality forests. Aim of work– To evaluate dynamic of deer (Cervidae) populations abundance and density in Jurbarkas district municipality forests, quality by horns and entrapment’s dynamic. Research methods– Information of deer abundance and entrapment is collected from official reports of the Ministry of Environment. Deer animals‘ evulation method by selection groups. Publications, literature sources‘ analysis method, comparative analysis method. Results– It was found dynamic of deer animals populations. Population of moose raised by 32 %, red deer – 32 %, roe – 29 % since 2008 until 2011 years. Ratio of all three deer animals sex matches principles of meat hunting organization. Moose hunting is forbidden because of low population. Population of red deer exceeds ecological density so there is necessary to control more intensive to avoid damage in husbandry and forestry. Population of roes is near to the limit of ecological density so there is necessary to control more intensive. There were hunted more selective red deer males. Entrapment of roebucks was increased even by 41% during 10 years. Much of red deers were hunted with 5-8 horns in Septembers. Most of hunted roebucks had 3-5 horns and entrapment is almost identic every month of hunting season.

Magistro darbe tiriami Šiaulių miškų urėdijos kertinių miško buveinių būklės pokyčiai 2004 – 2011 m. Darbo objektas – Šiaulių miškų urėdijos kertinės miško buveinės. Darbo tikslas – nustatyti KMB būklės pokyčius ir pateikti jų apsaugos ir tvarkymo rekomendacijas VĮ Šiaulių miškų urėdijos miškuose. Darbo metodai – literatūros loginė analizė, inventorizacijos duomenų analizė, palyginimas ir vertinimas. Darbo rezultatai. Šiaulių miškų udėdijos kertinėse miško buveinėse nustatytas ryškus spacializuotųjų ir indikatorinių rūšių pokytis: specializuotųjų kerpių ir indikatorinių samanų rūšių aptikimo atvejų padaugėjo – atitinkamai 20,0 ir 10,6 proc., tačiau ženkliai sumažėjo specializuotųjų grybų (43,1 proc.), indikatorinių induočių (44,4 proc.), moliuskų (50,0 proc.) ir vabalų rūšių (50,0 proc.) aptikimo atvejų. Šiaulių miškų urėdijos (P)KMB skaičius ir plotas 2011 m., palyginti su 2004 m., išliko beveik nepakitęs. Labiausiai sumažėjo medžių milžinų grupių (P)KMB tipas (20 vnt.). Darbo tikslas yra ištirti kriptogamų rūšių įvairovės dėsningumus skirtingo miškų ūkinės veiklos intensyvumo senuose plačialapių ir mišriuose su plačialapiais medžiais miškuose. Tikslui pasiekti buvo iškelti šie darbo uždaviniai: 1. Nustatyti indikatorinių kriptogamų rūšių skaičių ir gausą skirtingo miškų ūkinės veiklos intensyvumo brandžiuose medynuose; 2. Nustatyti pagrindinius veiksnius, turinčius įtaką indikatorinių kriptogamų rūšių skaičiui ir gausai. 3. Įvertinti skirtingo miškų ūkinės veiklos intensyvumo įtaką indikatorinių kriptogamų rūšių skaičiui ir gausai. 4. Įvertinti indikatorinių kriptogamų rūšių grupes pagal jų augimo vietą ir aplinkos sąlygas. The objective was to investigate regularities of diversity of cryptogam species in old broadleaved and mixed forests of different forest management intensity. The research was based on the following hypothesis: cryptogam species richness and abundance in a pristine forest are at least twice bigger than in a commercial forest; even extensive forest cutting has a long-term negative impact on rare cryptogam species; coarse dead wood is an extremely important substratum which maintains high cryptogam diversity in the forest; coarse dead wood is more important than the fine one for rare species survival; decayed dead wood is vital for some rare species survival; multispecied stand increases diversity of substrata and creates favourable conditions for higher number of species. To achieve the objective, the following tasks were set up: 1. To evaluate number and abundance of indicator species of cryptogams in mature stands with different intensity of forest management; 2. To determine main factors, influencing number and abundance of indicator species of cryptogams; 3. To evaluate impact of different intensity of forest management on the number and abundance of indicator species of cryptogams; 4. Magistro darbe įvertinti Degsnės maumedyno kiekybiniai ir kokybiniai taksaciniai parametrai, maumedžių būklė ir jos priežastys. Darbo objektas - Prienų miškų urėdijos, Balbieriškio girininkijos 29 kv. 1 skl., 1,79 ha plote augantis Degsnės maumedynas, įeinantis į Nemuno kilpų regionino parko teritoriją. Tyrimo tikslas - Atlikti Nemuno kilpų regioninio parko teritorijoje augančio Degsnės maumedyno realių taksacinių parametrų (kiekybinių, kokybinių) įvertinimą ir sanitarinės būklės analizę. Darbo metodai – instrumentinis dendrometrinių rodiklių nustatymas, vizualinis maumedžių būklės įvertinimas. Darbo rezultatai – 2011 metais nustatyta, kad Degsnės maumedyno vid.aukštis yra 39,8 m, o vid. skersmuo – 64,6 cm. Maumedyne auga 2 aukštesni maumedžiai, už aukščiausiu Lietuvoje laikomą medį - jų aukštis siekia 46,5 m. 3 maumedžių skersmuo daugiau nei 1 m. Storiausio maumedžio skersmuo – 108 cm. Medyno pakraštyje augantys medžiai yra vid. 2 m žemesni už medyno viduje augančius medžius (atitinkamai 38,4 m ir 40,4 m ), tačiau 10 cm storesni (atitinkamai 73,3 cm ir 62,6 cm), turi vid. 5 m ilgesnes lajas (atitinkamai 23,9 m ir 18,9 m) ir storesnes šakas. Work results – in 2011 it was found that the medium height of larch trees Degsnė arboretum 39,8 m, and the medium diameter is 64,6 cm. The larch trees arboretum has 2 high trees, higher than the tree which was considered to be the highest in Lithuania – their height is 46,5 m. Diameter of 3 exceeds 1 m. The diameter of the thickest larch tree is 108 cm. The trees growing at the edge of the arboretum in average 2 m lower than the tress in the middle of the arboretum (38,4 m and 40,4 m accordingly), however, they are thicker by 10 cm (73,3 cm and 62,6 cm accordingly), and have on average 5 m longer canopies (23,9 m and 18,9 m accordingly) and thicker branches. First time name of certification were mentioned 1990s concerning a problems with bad forest practices, hard improvement of governmental regulations especial in tropics. Later this concern were growing to 1992 Rio de Janeiro conference. And so, need of strict forest system in 1993 established Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Main activities started later 1996 in Canada with small group of people which started developing countries regional standards (Claros, 2009). Now FSC program is one of the biggest forest certification and accreditation providing company providing wood and their products and certification service. This program supports LEED Lumber, IKEA, biggest companies buying wood in the world, non governamental organisations World wild Fund (WWF), Green peace (www.fsc.org). The curiosity of how FSC forest certification impact forest management in Lithuania and Russia and lack of FSC standard studies with national law encouraged to create such study. We want to analyze FSC certification annual public reports raised CAR’s (Corrective action request) from Forest Management Units (FMU) - enterprises, leaseholders in Lithuania and Russia. Forest fires severity has increased in Portugal in the last decades. Climate change scenarios suggest the reinforcement of this severity. Forest ecosystem managers and policy-makers thus face the challenge of developing effective fire prevention policies. The characterization of forest fires is instrumental for meeting this challenge. An approach for characterizing fire occurrence in Portugal, combining the use of geographic information systems and statistical analysis techniques, is presented. Emphasis was on the relationships between ecological and socioeconomic features and fire occurrence. The number and sizes of wildfires in Portugal were assessed for three 5-year periods (1987–1991, 1990–1994, and 2000–2004). Features maps were overlaid with perimeters of forest fires, and the proportion of burned area for each period was modeled using weighted generalized linear models (WGLM). Descriptive statistics showed variations in the distribution of fire size over recent decades, with a significant increase in the number of very large fires. Modeling underlined the impact of the forest cover type on the proportion of area burned. The statistical analysis further showed that socioeconomic features such as the proximity to roads impact the probability of fires occurrence. Results suggest that this approach may provide insight needed to develop fire prevention policies.

Tyrimams yra pasirinkti medynai esantys skirtingose miškų urėdijose ir atitinkantys skirtingas medžioklės plotų kategorijas: Buktos miško masyvas (VĮ Marijampolės miškų urėdija); Pagėgių miško masyvas (VĮ Šilutės miškų urėdija); Naujininkų miško masyvas (VĮ Šilutės miškų urėdija); Darsūniškio miškas (VĮ Kaišiadorių miškų urėdija). Tyrimų metu buvo išskirtos apskaitos aikštelės, kuriose buvo nustatytas medelių bei krūmų skabymo intensyvumas, dalis pašarų sudėtyje, utilizacijos faktorius, sutinkamumas. There were selected forest stands in several State Forest Enterprises corresponding to different categories of hunting areas: Bukta forest (Marijampolė State Forest Enterprise), Pagėgiai forest (Šilutė State Forest Enterprise), Naujininkai forest (Šilutė State Forest Enterprise) and Drasiūniškis forest (Kaišiadoriai State Forest Enterprise). For estimation of browsing intensity, share in forage, utilization factor and occurrence of undergrowth and understorey tree and shrub species, sampling plots were intercepted. There were identified most and least preferable undergrowth and understorey tree and shrub species. By counting pellets number of deer animals was estimated as well.

Tauriųjų elnių populiacijos gausa ir tankis viršyja maksimalią (maksimali 37 vnt./1000 ha esama 38vnt./1000ha). Esant tokiam tankiui mažėja prieaugis. Europinių stirnų tankis yra artimas optimaliai, galimas intensyvus medžiojimas. Briedžiai yra tik užklystanti rūšis, todėl jų medžioklė negalima. Kauno marių regioniniame parke vyrauja vidutiniškai tinkami rekreacijai medynai (866 ha, 32 %, kurių tinkamumo rekreacijai balas 41 – 60), ir mažai tinkami rekreacijai medynai (879,1 ha, 32 %, kurių balas 21 – 40). Mažiausiai yra labai tinkamų (159,8 ha, 5 %, kurių tinkamumo rekreacijai balas 81 – 100), ir tinkamų (150 ha, 6 %, kurių balas 61 – 80) poilsiui medynų. Reasonable Kauno marios regional park stands adequacy of recreation. Work practices. Stands for recreational fitness evaluated 102 block, according to E. Riepšo (1990) methodology. Stands for recreation suitability conducted 2743.10 hectares, using ArcGIS software and the Microsoft Office suite spreadsheet. Recreational forest character assessment carried out using 57 plots E. Magistro darbe tiriami tauriųjų elnių auginimo aptvaruose ypatumai Lietuvos sąlygomis. Darbo objektas - S.Petraičio privatus elnininkystės ūkis, esantis Joniškio rajone. Darbo tikslas - išaiškinti aptvaruose auginamų tauriųjų elnių augimo ir veisimosi ypatumus. Darbo uždaviniai – nustatyti tauriųjų elnių veisimosi, kūno ir ragų augimo ypatumus, užsikrėtimą ligomis bei parazitais. Išaiškinti ar šėrimo racionas tenkina tauriųjų elnių poreikius. Darbo metodai – vizualinis tauriųjų elnių stebėjimas visais metų laikais, nustatant elgsenos ypatumus. Helmintų tyrimas (helmintoovoskopija) – laboratorijoje tiriami sviežiai surinkti tauriųjų elnių ekskrementai. Šėrimo raciono išaiškinimas, pagal maisto medžiagų kiekius skirtingose pašaro rūšyse ir elnių poreikius nustatomas jo pakankamumas. Rujos, jauniklių vedimo bei įvairių kitų darbų ir operacijų stebėjimas tiesiogiai dalyvaujant jose (haremų tvarkymas, vakcinavimas, ženklinimas (numeravimas), ir kt.). Work object – private deers’ farm of S.Petraitis in Joniškis region. Work aim – to reveal the peculiarities of growing and breeding of red deers in the enclosures. Work objectives – to ascertain the peculiarities of breeding the red deers, body and antlers, infection with diseases and parasites. To find out whether the feeding ration is suitable for the needs of the red deers. Work methods – visual observation of the red deers during all seasons, when determining the behaviour peculiarities. Analysis of helminths (helminthovoscopy) – the freshly collected excrements of the red deers are analysed in the laboratory. The exploration of feeding ration – its sufficiency is estimated according to the nourishing quantities in the types of feed and the needs of deers. The observation of rut, calving and various works and operations is performed by taking part directly in them (arranging of harems, vaccination, marking (numbering), etc.). Magistro darbe tiriama paliktų biologinės įvairovės medžių atsparumas neigiamiems aplinkos veiksniams. Darbo objektas – pušies biologinės įvairovės medžiai paliekami kirtavietėse, Veisiejų miškų urėdijos miškuose. Darbo tikslas – ištirti kirtavietėje paliekamų pušies biologinės įvairovės medžių atsparumą neigiamiems aplinkos veiksniams ir jų išlikimo priklausomybę nuo medžių ir aplinkos sąvybių. Darbo metodika – Lauko tyrimų metu surinkta informacija apie Veisiejų miškų urėdijose plynas kirtavietes ir jose biologinei įvairovei paliktus medžius. Iš kiekvienų plynais kirtimais kirstų kirtaviečių buvo pasirinktos 42 kirtavietės. Atliekant tyrimą buvo bandyta išaiškinti atskirų medžių atsparumą aplinkos poveikiui, priklausomai nuo jų individualių ir aplinkos savybių. Buvo mėginama apskaičiuoti žuvusių medžių dalį, priklausomai nuo kirtavietės reljefo, augavietės sąlygų ir dirvos įdirbimo. Darbo rezultatai – Per tiriamą 2003-2005 metų laikotarpį vidutinis paliktų medžių skaičius plynose kirtavietėse viename hektare išaugo 1,1 karto, bet jų vidutinis skersmuo sumažėjo. Vadinasi su kiekvienais metais buvo paliekama vis daugiau, bet smulkesnių medžių. Tačiau geriausiai – išlieka stambios 51-60 cm skersmens pušys. Daugiausia pušų žuvo 20- 30 cm skersmens. Geriau išlieka grupėmis paliekami medžiai nei medžiai paliekami pavieniui. Object of the work: the pine trees which are reserved for biodiversity in the clear-cut areas of the forestry of Veisiejai. Aim of the work: to research the resistance to the negative environmental factors of the pine trees left in the stalls for biological diversity and to determine their dependence on the trees and environmental conditions. Methods of work: The data about the clear-cut areas of the forestry of Veisiejai and the trees left in those stalls for biological diversity were collected during the field research. Out of the numerous clear-cut areas 42 were selected to participate in the research. The attempt was made to evaluate the resistance of particular trees to the environmental factors depending on the individual characteristics of the trees and the environmental conditions. An effort was made to count the perished trees depending on the conformation of the stall, the conditions of the setting and the preparation of the land. Result of the work: The average number of reserved trees in the clear-cut areas increased 1.1 times per hectare during the researched period of 2003-2005, but the average tree trunk diameter decreased. Tyrimo objektas – Tyrimo objektas yra porakanopių žvėrių populiacijos valstybiniame Praviršulio tyrelio botaniniame-zoologiniame draustinyje. Šis draustinis yra Radviliškio rajono pietinėje dalyje, priklauso III a- klimatiniam parajoniuj. Bendras draustinio plotas 3292 ha. Aukštapelkė sudaro 60% draustinio teritorijos. Darbo tikslas - nustatyti porakanopių, graužikų ir kiškiažvėrių populiacijų būklę Praviršulio tyrelio valstybiniame botaniniame – zoologiniame draustinyje. Siekiant darbo tikslo buvo iškelti tokie uždaviniai: 1. Nustatyti draustinio porakanopių, graužikų ir kiškiažvėrių rūšinę sudėtį, jų gausą bei tankį. 2. Nustatyti porakanopių žvėrių populiacijų dinamiką. 3. Nustatyti bebrų įtaką aplinkai. 4. Įvertinti elninių žvėrių žiemos ganyklų būklę. After studying scientific works of Lithuanian and foreign authors and periodic literature about the factors influencing the behaviours of hunted fauna, there was determined the abundance of animals, general density, determined the dynamics of animals population.

Darbo objektas – naujai sukryžminti hibridinės drebulės (Populus tremuloides x Populus tremula) ir karpotojo beržo ( Betula pendula) hibridai. Darbo tikslas – Atlikti tolimąją hibridizaciją ir išauginti augalus-regenerantus nesubrendusių gemalų kultūroje bei įvertinti genetinę įvairovę. Darbo rezultatai. Sukryžminus gauta skirtingi hibridai. Jų įvairovė įvertinta APPD metodu. Išmatavus augimo tempus nustatyta, kad hibridai 16.2 ir 16.4 auga greičiau nei hibridinės drebulės klonai. Ištyrus adaptacijos nesterilioje aplinkoje sąlygas, nustatyta šaknijimosi tempai. Tyrimo metu pastebėta, kad ūgliukų sodinimas į durpių substratą Jiffi tabletėse su šaknimis ir be jų ilgesniam nei 3 mėnesių laikotarpiui, neturi augimo skirtumų. His variation rated by RAPD metod. After measure growing speed, set that hybrids 16.2 and 16.4 growing faster than hybriding aspen clons. In adaptation study set root growing speed. Magistro darbe tiriama miško aplinkos sąlygų ir klimato kaitos įtaka inkiluose perintiems žvirbliniams paukščiams. Darbo objektas – inkiluose perintys žvirbliniai paukščiai. Darbo tikslas – ištirti žvirblinių paukščių veisimosi dėsningumus Kazlų Rūdos miškų masyve ir įvertinti klimato kaitos poveikį. Darbo metodai – sistemingai iškeltų inkilų stebėjimas, loginė literatūros analizė, statistinė duomenų analizė. Darbo rezultatai. Atlikus tyrimus Kazlų Rūdos mokomosios miškų urėdijos Jūrės girininkijos miškuose, įvertintas miško aplinkos veiksnių ir klimato kaitos poveikis didžiosios zylės Parus major L. ir margasparnės musinukės Ficedula hypoleuca Pall. veisimuisi ir gauti tokie rezultatai: didžiosios zylės pirmojo kiaušinio padėjimo laiką tiesiogiai įtakoja vidutinė paros temperatūra, tačiau reakcija yra uždelsta 4 dienomis; didžiosios zylės antrojoje vadoje arčiau miško aikštės, kirtavietės ar jaunuolyno krašto deda didesnes dėtis; šiltėjančio klimato pasėkoje didžiosios zylės pradeda veistis vidutiniškai 5 dienomis anksčiau lyginant su A. Aleknonio pateiktais duomenimis (1958-1982); dėl ankstesnio didžiųjų zylių veisimosi pirmojoje vadoje, taip pat dėl pailgėjusio periodo su aukštesnėmis temperatūromis antra vada pradedama dėti anksčiau ir būna gausesnė. This study is analyzing Forest environment conditions and changes in climate influence on breeding passerine birds hatched in nest boxes. The Object – Passerine birds breeding in nest boxes. The aim of this paper is to investigate regularities of breeding passerine birds in Kazlų Rūda forest and to estimate possible impact of climate change. Methods – observation of systematically placed nest boxes, logical literature analysis, statistical analysis of data. Results. Study was carried on Training State Forest Enterprise of Kazlų Rūda, Forestry of Jūrė. Impact of forest environment and changes in climate on breeding of Great Tit (Parus major) and Pied Fly Catcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) were estimated. Following results were found: time of first laying egg is directly influenced by mean temperature of the day, but reaction time is delayed for 4 days; in the second broad that are closer to the forest openings, forest cuttings or brush stage forest edge Great Tits are laying more eggs; thought the warming of the climate Great Tits starts to breed 5 days earlier comparing to data by A. Aleknonis (1958-1982); regarding earlier breeding of Great Tits in first broad, either prolonged period with higher temperatures second broad is relatively larger and initiated to lay earlier.

Magistro darbe tiriamos elninių žvėrių žiemos ganyklos Kazlų Rūdos miškų masyve. Tyrimo objektas – Kazlų Rūdos miškų masyvas, Kazlų Rūdos mokomosios miškų urėdijos teritorijoje. Tyrimo tikslas – įvertinti elninių žvėrių žiemos ganyklų būklę ir ją sąlygojančius veiksnius. Tyrimo metodai – S.E. Aldous pašarinių apkrovų apskaitos maršrutinėje juostoje metodas, R. McCain elninių žvėrių apskaitos pagal ekskrementus metodas. Tyrimo rezultatai – Pagrindinė elninių žvėrių rūšis Kazlų Rūdos masyve, atsižvelgiant į plotų tinkamumą yra briedis (Alces alces), šalutinė – stirna (Capreolus capreolus), o taurusis elnias (Cervus elaphus) yra nepageidaujama elninių žvėrių rūšis.Tyrimo metu apskaitos aikštelėse nustatyta atskirų rūšių sumedėjusių augalų gausa, skabymo intensyvumas bei dalis elninių žvėrių žiemos pašarų balanse. Kazlų Rūdos miškų masyve nustatytos labiausiai elninių žvėrių alinamos pomiškio bei trako rūšys, jų sutinkamumas, bei apskaitos aikštelėse rastų augalų pažeidimų tendencijos. Įvertinus kiekvienos medelių bei krūmų pomiškio ir trako rūšies dalį elninių žvėrių žiemos pašarų sudėtyje, išaiškintos pagrindinės rūšys, dominuojančios gyvūnų maisto racione. Apskaičiuotas atskirų rūšių elninių žvėrių tankis: briedžio – 0,9 vnt./1000 ha, tauriojo elnio - 4,6 vnt./1000 ha, stirnos – 58,5 vnt./1000 ha. The Goal – to evaluate condition of Cervine animals winter yards and to estimate determinative factors. Research Methods – Deer browse survey method by S.E. Aldous, a method for measuring deer range use by R. McCain. Results – Leading species of Cervines in Kazlų Rūda forests is moose (Alces alces), secondary – roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and red deer (Cervus elaphus) is unwanted species. Abundance, browsing intensity and share in winter forage of particular species of ligneous plants during the research were estimated. Most wasted species, their frequency and tendency of lesion of undergrowth and underbrush. Measurement of several species of trees and scrubs had showed which of them are main, dominant in relation to animals ration. Estimated density of particular Cervine species: moose – 0,9 unit/ha, red deer – 4,6 units/ha, roe deer – 58,5 units/ha.

Magistro darbe tiriama paliktų biologinei įvairovei medžių plyno kirtimo biržėse būklė ir išlikimas. Darbo objektas – plyno kirtimo biržės ir jose palikti biologinės įvairovės medžiai. Darbo tikslas – nustatyti plynose kirtavietėse paliekamų biologinės įvairovės medžių būklę, rūšinę sudėtį, kiekį ir pasiskirstymą bei išlikimą kirtavietėje. Darbo metodika – atliekant tyrimą, dėmesys buvo kreipiamas į du skirtingus parametrus. Pirmiausia buvo išsiaiškintas atskirų medžių atsparumas aplinkos poveikiams, priklausomai nuo jų individualių savybių. Kitas tyrimas, kuriame buvo apskaičiuota žuvusių medžių dalis kirtavietėje, priklausomai nuo kirtavietės parametrų ir medžių išsidėstymo joje. Darbo rezultatai – Plynose kirtavietėse vidutiniškai paliekama 11 medžių hektare, iš kurių per pirmuosius šešerius metus 14 procentų žūsta. Didėjant kirtavietės dydžiui bendras išlikimo procentas mažėja. Geriau išlieka grupėmis paliekami medžiai nei medžiai paliekami pavieniui. Didelę reikšmę medžių išlikimui turi vėjas - du trečdaliai žuvusių medžių žuvo dėl vėjo, buvo išversti arba nulaužti. Didžiausią poveikį vėjas turi medžiams, kurių paviršinė šaknų sistema, ir medžiams, kurių storio ir aukščio santykis mažesnis. Didėjant atstumui nuo kirtavietės krašto, dėl didesnio vėjo poveikio, medžių išlikimas mažėja. Object of the work – trees left for biological diversity in clear cutting areas Aim of the work – to evaluate the condition, variety, quantity and layout of the trees, left for biological diversity in clear cutting areas. Methods of work- attention were paid to two different indicates: first, it has been investigated trees ability to resist environmental factors, depending on individual aspects of each tree. Second, it has been investigated area of coppice, where it was examined fraction of dead trees depending of trees layout and different factors in the coppice. Result of the work – there are approximately eleven trees left in each hectare and 14 percent of them do not survive during the first 6 years. The more the coppice expands the less possibility of tree to survive. The trees are more likely to survive when they are left in groups rather than on their own. The wind has important implication to the trees; two thirds of the trees get destroyed by the wind. The trees that are mostly in danger due to the wind are the ones that have roots spread out close to the ground surface and which have a reduced diameter and height ratio. Darbo tikslas – įvertinti Kamšos botaninio – zoologinio draustinio medžiojamosios faunos būklę. Magistro darbe tiriamos briedžių žiemos ganyklos Labanoro regioniniame parke. Darbo objektas – Labanoro regioninis parkas- Labanoro girininkija. Darbo tikslas – nustatyti briedžių gausą ir jų žiemos ganyklų būklę Labanoro regioniniame parke. Darbo metodai – R. McCain metodas, statistinė analizė. Darbo rezultatai. Šio darbo tikslas – nustatyti briedžių gausą ir jų žiemos ganyklų būklę Labanoro regioniniame parke. . Tyrimas pasirinktuose bareliuose buvo atliktas R. McCaino metodu, tiriant briedžių ganyklų būklę nevegetaciniu laikotarpiu. Tyrimo juostos ilgis - 14,1 km Briedžių žiemos ganyklų įvertinimas parodė, kad žvėrių poveikis ganykloms priklauso nuo medelių ir ūglių apsaugojimo repelentais. Pažeidimų lygis ganyklose priklausė ir nuo repelentų kokybės, ir nuo augalų apdorojimo repelentais tvarkingumo. Buvo patvirtinta darbo hipotezė, kad nuo repelentų kokybės ir augalų apdorojimo kokybės priklausė kokius augalus briedžiai dažniau rinkosi. Pušies želdiniai buvo žalojami mažiau nei vidutiniškai. Master‘s Research was based on the assessment of the moose influence in the winter habitats of the Labanoras Regional Park. The object – Labanoras Regional Park. The goal – assessment of the state of winter habitats of moose in Labanoras Regional Park. The research method – R. McCain method and statistics analysis. The goal of this work was to assess of the state of winter habitats of moose in Labanoras Regional Park. I have used R. McCain method assessing the number of moose local population. The method of sample plots was used to assess the state of the wither habitats of moose. The total length of transect is 14,1 km. Research of the state of winter habitats has shown that the moose influence depends on repellent use. The main reason of the strong influence on pine depends not only on repellents use but also on repellent quality. Moose prefer different species of trees including pine. Research has approved this hypothesis. The pine was consumed averagely.

Magistro darbe tiriamas varliagyvių vystymasis ir jų pasiskirstymas Krekenavos regioniniame parke. Darbo objektas – varliagyviai Krekenavos regioniniame parke Darbo tikslas – nustatyti Krekenavos regioninio parko varliagyvių rūšinę įvairovę ir jos pasiskirstymą. Darbo metodai – eksperimentas, natūralus stebėjimas, matavimas, maršrutinis metodas. Darbo rezultatai. Šiame darbe panaudota medžiaga buvo surinkta 2006.04.23, ir 2006.birželio – rugsėjo mėnesiais. Atlikus stebėjimus buvo pastebėti akivaizdūs skirtumai tarp namų ir lauko bandymo rezultatų. Kambario sąlygos, šiluma ir temperatūra nulėmė buožgalvių greitesnį vystymąsi, nei lauko sąlygomis. Namų sąlygomis buožgalvių metamorfozė nuo embriono iki buožgalvio trunka 4 dienas. Lauko sąlygomis buožgalviai vystosi panašiai, kaip ir natūraliomis sąlygomis , metamorfozė nuo embriono iki buožgalvio trunka 12 dienų. Smailiasnukės varlės ( Rana arvalis) gausiai sutinkamos pušyne. Paprastasis tritonas (Titrus vulgaris) aptinkamas tik sausuose pušynuose. Mišriame lapuočių miške – pievinės varlės (Rana temporaria). Glitėtų beržyne gausiai sutinkamos varlės ežerinė varlė (Rana ridisbunda) ir kūdrinė varlė (Rana esculenta). Senvagėje ir užtvankoje varlių pasiskirstymas nėra būdingas vienai ar kitai gyvenamajai aplinkai. Krekenavos regioniniame parke gausiausiai sutinkamos rudosios varlės, o iš jų – pievinė varlė (Rana temporaria); ji mažiausiai išranki savo gyvenamajai vietai. This master work analyses the development of amphibians and their distribution in Krekenava regional park. The object of this work – the amphibians in Krekenava regional park. The goal of this work – to determine the variety of amphibian species in Krekenava regional park, their abundance and distribution. The objectives of this work – experiment, natural observation, measurement, route method. The results of this work. The material used in this work was collected in 2006.04.23 and June ) September period of 2006. After observation there were noticed big differences between the results achieved in experiment within outside and inside conditions. Inside conditions, warmth and temperature have caused faster development of tadpoles than within outside conditions. The methamorphosis of tadpoles within inside conditions takes 4 days. The development of tadpoles within outside conditions in their natural habitat is very similar, only in takes 12 days to develop from embryo to tadpoles. Rana arvalis are very common in pine forest. Triturus vulgaris are found only in dry pine forest. Rana temporaria are very common in leaf – bearing forests. Rana esculenta and Rana ridibunda are very common in birch forest. The distribution of frogs in the old riverbed and the, pond isn’t common for one or the other natural habitat. The most common frog species in Krekenava regional park is the brown frog species - Rana temporaria , which is the least fastidious for its natural habitat.

In this work is researching the behaviour peculiarity of wolves and the public opinion towards wolves. The aim – to investigate the wolves’ tracks and the harm of wolves to livestock in Gulbinas forest and in district of this forest; to evaluate the local public opinion towards wolves. The object –the local wolves’ population living in Gulbinas forest and neighborus lesser forests (Vileišiškiai, Vaitutiškiai, Daugmaudžiai, Skobiškiai and Aušgiriai) also agricultural land between these forests in northern part Šiauliai district. Methods – the behaviour of wolves was investigated by snow tracking method; the harm and the public opinion towards wolves were investigated by questionnaire method. Technical tools – global position estimation appliance GPS „EMAP“, computer programme ARCWIEW GIS 3.2. Results – Directional tracks of wolves may be founded in various age stands and clear cut areas. So it can be that farming in the forests does not do the substantial influence to wolves’ choice of tracks. But it’s observes the tendency, that wolves give the priority to more older stands and avoid clear cut areas. Mostly were attacked young animals up to 1 year old (76%). They make the most big part (4,8%) of livestock killed through the year from the all number of young livestock. Mostly livestock were attacked during July - August (76%), less during Sepember – (24%).

Instituto de Ciencias Forestales (ICIFOR), Climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of droughts around the globe, leading to tree mortality that reduces production and provision of other ecosystem services. Recent studies show that growth of mixed stands may be more resilient to drought than pure stands. The two most economically important and widely distributed tree species in Europe are Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), but little is known about their susceptibility to drought when coexist. This paper analyses the resilience (resistance, recovery rate and recovery time) at individual-tree level using a network of tree-ring collections from 22 sites along a climatic gradient from central Europe to Scandinavia. We aimed to identify differences in growth following drought between the two species and between mixed and pure stands, and how environmental variables (climate, topography and site location) and tree characteristics influence them. We found that both the timing and duration of drought drive the different responses between species and compositions. Norway spruce showed higher vulnerability to summer drought, with both lower resistance and a longer recovery time than Scots pine. Mixtures provided higher drought resistance for both species compared to pure stands, but the benefit decreases with the duration of the drought. Especially climate sensitive and old trees in climatically marginal sites were more affected by drought stress. Synthesis. Promoting Scots pine and mixed forests is a promising strategy for adapting European forests to climate change.
