The knee is an essential part of our body, and identifying its injuries is crucial since it can significantly affect quality of life. To date, the preferred way of evaluating knee injuries is through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is an effective imaging technique that accurately identifies injuries. The issue with this method is that the high amount of detail that comes with MRIs is challenging to interpret and time consuming for radiologists to analyze. The issue becomes even more concerning when radiologists are required to analyze a significant number of MRIs in a short period. For this purpose, automated tools may become helpful to radiologists assisting them in the evaluation of these images. Machine learning methods, in being able to extract meaningful information from data, such as images or any other type of data, are promising for modeling the complex patterns of knee MRI and relating it to its interpretation. In this study, using a real-life imaging protocol, a machine-learning model based on convolutional neural networks used for detecting medial meniscus tears, bone marrow edema, and general abnormalities on knee MRI exams is presented. Furthermore, the model’s effectiveness in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity is evaluated. Based on this evaluation protocol, the explored models reach a maximum accuracy of 83.7%, a maximum sensitivity of 82.2%, and a maximum specificity of 87.99% for meniscus tears. For bone marrow edema, a maximum accuracy of 81.3%, a maximum sensitivity of 93.3%, and a maximum specificity of 78.6% is reached. Finally, for general abnormalities, the explored models reach 83.7%, 90.0% and 84.2% of maximum accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively.

In recent years, small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been used in many video surveillance applications, such as vehicle tracking, border control, dangerous object detection, and many others. Anomaly detection can represent a prerequisite of many of these applications thanks to its ability to identify areas and/or objects of interest without knowing them a priori. In this paper, a One-Class Support Vector Machine (OC-SVM) anomaly detector based on customized Haralick textural features for aerial video surveillance at low-altitude is presented. The use of a One-Class SVM, which is notoriously a lightweight and fast classifier, enables the implementation of real-time systems even when these are embedded in low-computational small-scale UAVs. At the same time, the use of textural features allows a vision-based system to detect micro and macro structures of an analyzed surface, thus allowing the identification of small and large anomalies, respectively. The latter aspect plays a key role in aerial video surveillance at low-altitude, i.e., 6 to 15 m, where the detection of common items, e.g., cars, is as important as the detection of little and undefined objects, e.g., Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Experiments obtained on the UAV Mosaicking and Change Detection (UMCD) dataset show the effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, where the model achieves a 100% precision, i.e., never misses an anomaly, but at the expense of a reasonable trade-off in its recall, which still manages to reach up to a 71.23% score. Moreover, when compared to classical Haralick textural features, the model obtains significantly higher performances, i.e., ≈20% on all metrics, further demonstrating the approach effectiveness.

The last two decades have seen an incessant growth in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with HD cameras for developing aerial vision-based systems to support civilian and military tasks, including land monitoring, change detection, and object classification. To perform most of these tasks, the artificial intelligence algorithms usually need to know, a priori, what to look for, identify. or recognize. Actually, in most operational scenarios, such as war zones or post-disaster situations, areas and objects of interest are not decidable a priori since their shape and visual features may have been altered by events or even intentionally disguised (e.g., improvised explosive devices (IEDs)). For these reasons, in recent years, more and more research groups are investigating the design of original anomaly detection methods, which, in short, are focused on detecting samples that differ from the others in terms of visual appearance and occurrences with respect to a given environment. In this paper, we present a novel two-branch Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based method for low-altitude RGB aerial video surveillance to detect and localize anomalies. We have chosen to focus on the low-altitude sequences as we are interested in complex operational scenarios where even a small object or device can represent a reason for danger or attention. The proposed model was tested on the UAV Mosaicking and Change Detection (UMCD) dataset, a one-of-a-kind collection of challenging videos whose sequences were acquired between 6 and 15 m above sea level on three types of ground (i.e., urban, dirt, and countryside). Results demonstrated the effectiveness of the model in terms of Area Under the Receiving Operating Curve (AUROC) and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), achieving an average of 97.2% and 95.7%, respectively, thus suggesting that the system can be deployed in real-world applications.

Advance assessment of the potential functional improvement of patients undergoing a rehabilitation program is crucial in developing precision medicine tools and patient-oriented rehabilitation programs, as well as in better allocating resources in hospitals. In this work, we propose a novel approach to this problem using machine learning algorithms focused on assessing the modified Barthel index (mBI) as an indicator of functional ability. We build four tree-based ensemble machine learning models and train them on a private training cohort of orthopedic (OP) and neurological (NP) hospital discharges. Moreover, we evaluate the models using a validation set for each category of patients using root mean squared error (RMSE) as an absolute error indicator between the predicted mBI and the actual values. The best results obtained from the study are an RMSE of 6.58 for OP patients and 8.66 for NP patients, which shows the potential of artificial intelligence in predicting the functional improvement of patients undergoing rehabilitation.

We present a numerical investigation of the airflow dynamics and particle transport through an averaged human nasal cavity. The effect of particle size and breathing rate on the deposition patterns are explored. The simulations reveal that smaller particles penetrate deeper into the airway, whereas larger particles agglomerate near the anterior portion of the nasal cavity. Increasing the flow rate augmented the penetration of the particles. The complex interplay of the finite particle size and the flow inertia decided the spatial deposition of the particles. The findings from this study demonstrate the efficacy of state-of-art simulation frameworks for targeting respiratory disorders.

Tracking objects across multiple video frames is a challenging task due to several difficult issues such as occlusions, background clutter, lighting as well as object and camera view-point variations, which directly affect the object detection. These aspects are even more emphasized when analyzing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) based images, where the vehicle movement can also impact the image quality. A common strategy employed to address these issues is to analyze the input images at different scales to obtain as much information as possible to correctly detect and track the objects across video sequences. Following this rationale, in this paper, we introduce a simple yet effective novel multi-stream (MS) architecture, where different kernel sizes are applied to each stream to simulate a multi-scale image analysis. The proposed architecture is then used as backbone for the well-known Faster-R-CNN pipeline, defining a MS-Faster R-CNN object detector that consistently detects objects in video sequences. Subsequently, this detector is jointly used with the Simple Online and Real-time Tracking with a Deep Association Metric (Deep SORT) algorithm to achieve real-time tracking capabilities on UAV images. To assess the presented architecture, extensive experiments were performed on the UMCD, UAVDT, UAV20L, and UAV123 datasets. The presented pipeline achieved state-of-the-art performance, confirming that the proposed multi-stream method can correctly emulate the robust multi-scale image analysis paradigm.
