In this study, we examine the cash usage of Hungarian micro, small and mediumsized enterprises along with the main reasons behind the use of cash by analysing data from a questionnaire-based survey conducted on a sample comprising 1,000 corporate managers. In this context, we study the payment habits of enterprises, their ties with financial institutions, the degree of distrust in the Hungarian corporate sector and potential tools for the reduction of cash usage. Wherever possible, we compare our results to the conclusions of previously published Hungarian or foreign research conducted with a similar focus. According to our most important findings, credit transfer is clearly the most prominent payment method both in the SME sector and among microenterprises, but the rate of cash usage is also high and it does not exhibit a declining trend. Positive changes can be observed, however, in payment discipline and business confidence. Hungarian enterprises are loyal to their account manager banks, and although they are essentially open to electronic payment solutions they are highly sensitive to the associated costs.

A cikk célja, hogy elemző bemutatását adja az ellátási láncok működéséhez, különösen a disztribúciós tevékenység kiszervezéséhez kapcsolódó működési kockázatoknak. Az írás első része az irodalomkutatás eredményeit feldolgozva az ellátási láncok kockázati kitettségének növekedése mögött rejlő okokat törekszik feltárni, s röviden bemutatja a vállalati kockázatkezelés lehetséges lépéseit e téren. A cikk második gondolati egysége mélyinterjúk segítségével összefoglalja és rendszerezi a disztribúció kiszervezéséhez kapcsolódó kockázatokat, számba veszi a kapcsolódó kockázatkezelési lehetőségeket, s bemutatja a megkérdezett vállalatok által alkalmazott kockázat-megelőzési alternatívákat. ______ The aim of this paper is to introduce operational risks of supply chains, especially risks deriving from the outsourcing of distribution management. Based on literature review the first part of the paper talks about the potential reasons of increasing global supply chain risks, and the general business activities of risk assessment. Analyzing the results of semi-structured qualitative interviews, the second part summarizes the risks belonging to the outsourcing of distribution and introduces the potential risk assessment and avoidance opportunities and alternatives in practice.

A cikk célja, hogy bemutassa a vállalatok, ezen belül kiemelten vevő és beszállító közötti kapcsolatok jelentéstartalmának elméleti megközelítéseit. Ehhez kapcsolódóan az írás két fő egységre tagolódik: az első szakaszban a vevő-beszállító kapcsolat fogalmának kifejtésekor ismerteti azok kialakulásának, a tranzakciók szintjéről kiinduló fejlődésének lehetséges állomásait, továbbá egy elméleti vizsgálati keretet mutat be, amelynek segítségével a cikk fókuszában álló kapcsolatok elemezhetők, belső struktúrájuk feltárható. A vállalatok közötti kapcsolatok vizsgálatával, tartalmának elemzésével több elméleti irányzat foglalkozik. Jelen írás a vevők és beszállítók közötti kapcsolat definiálása és a felek közötti viszonyrendszert elemző elméleti megközelítések ismertetése során alapvetően az Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Group nemzetközi kutatócsoport által alkotott és elfogadott elméletekre támaszkodik, főként azok nemzetközi publikációkban ismertetett eredményeit szintetizálja. Az írás második tartalmi egységében az ismertetett elméletek gyakorlatban való megjelenését, értelmezhetőségét esettanulmány szemlélteti.

This article summarises the findings of qualitative, in-depth interviews which aimed to explore the motivating factors behind domestic cash usage that generate the significantly higher cash volumes in Hungary than would ’normally’ be justified. In the opinion of the experts interviewed, cash usage may be facilitated by the intensive cash need of the hidden economy, the traditional cash-oriented behaviour of the public administration and a lack of trust in business-to-business transactions. This analysis primarily intends to capture certain trends, which may have temporarily changed in the wake of the economic crisis, but nevertheless span a number of years and the specific phenomena of which may be regarded as generally valid over the long term, apart from certain periodic effects.

Related to this, a further research point is to analyze the time-dimension of success: how success changes and develops over time. The basic elements of this research are the relationships between supplier and buyer business partners, so the empirical study will focus on these dyads. At the theoretical grounding of the paper I highly focused on making a difference between business and relationship success. The introduced research definitely had an exploratory scope. That is why; two qualitative methodologies were applied: the grounded theory and the case study ones.

This paper focuses on analyzing the cash supply network, in which the central bank – as an institutional member – acts as a key influencing node/party. By analyzing the case study example of the Hungarian cash supply, the paper introduces the different kinds of special network patterns that can appear in cases, when the network exists in an institutional (B2A) context and the institutional network member has a special regulatory role in influencing the manner of other business network members. The research findings are based on the application of the case study method. One case will be analyzed that focuses on introducing the main features of the Hungarian cash supply network and the behavior of its key members [central bank (the institutional one); cash logistic providers, commercial banks, post office, retail chains (business ones)]. From managerial point, the analyzed case provides evidences that influencing and interplaying network effects are valid for an institutional member as well, even if it has “special rights” to influence the basic network processes and structure.
