Fractonic phases are new phases of matter that host excitations with restricted mobility. We show that a certain class of gapless fractonic phases are realized as a result of spontaneous breaking of continuous higher-form symmetries whose conserved charges do not commute with spatial translations. We refer to such symmetries as nonuniform higher-form symmetries. These symmetries fall within the standard definition of higher-form symmetries in quantum field theory, and the corresponding symmetry generators are topological. Worldlines of particles are regarded as the charged objects of 1-form symmetries, and mobility restrictions can be implemented by introducing additional 1-form symmetries whose generators do not commute with spatial translations. These features are realized by effective field theories associated with spontaneously broken nonuniform 1-form symmetries. At low energies, the theories reduce to known higher-rank gauge theories such as scalar/vector charge gauge theories, and the gapless excitations in these theories are interpreted as Nambu--Goldstone modes for higher-form symmetries. Due to the nonuniformity of the symmetry, some of the modes acquire a gap, which is the higher-form analogue of the inverse Higgs mechanism of spacetime symmetries. The gauge theories have emergent nonuniform magnetic symmetries, and some of the magnetic monopoles become fractonic. We identify the 't~Hooft anomalies of the nonuniform higher-form symmetries and the corresponding bulk symmetry-protected topological phases. By this method, the mobility restrictions are fully determined by the choice of the commutation relations of charges with translations. In string theory the closed-string massless NS-NS sector forms a multiplet of $$\mathbf {O}(D,D)$$ O ( D , D ) symmetry. This suggests a specific modification to General Relativity in which the entire NS-NS sector is promoted to stringy graviton fields. Imposing off-shell $$\mathbf {O}(D,D)$$ O ( D , D ) symmetry fixes the correct couplings to other matter fields and the Einstein field equations are enriched to comprise $$D^{2}+1$$ D 2 + 1 components, dubbed recently as the Einstein Double Field Equations. Here we explore the cosmological implications of this framework. We derive the most general homogeneous and isotropic ansatzes for both stringy graviton fields and the $$\mathbf {O}(D,D)$$ O ( D , D ) -covariant energy-momentum tensor. Crucially, the former admits space-filling magnetic H-flux. Substituting them into the Einstein Double Field Equations, we obtain the $$\mathbf {O}(D,D)$$ O ( D , D ) completion of the Friedmann equations along with a generalized continuity equation. We discuss how solutions in this framework may be characterized by two equation-of-state parameters, w and $$\lambda $$ λ , where the latter characterizes the relative intensities of scalar and tensor forces. When $$\lambda +3w=1$$ λ + 3 w = 1 , the dilaton remains constant throughout the cosmological evolution, and one recovers the standard Friedmann equations for generic matter content (i.e. for any w). We further point out that, in contrast to General Relativity, neither an $$\mathbf {O}(D,D)$$ O ( D , D ) -symmetric cosmological constant nor a scalar field with positive energy density gives rise to a de Sitter solution.

In this Thesis I explore aspects of dark radiation and its role in String Phenomenology. Dark radiation is any additional hidden type of relativistic matter present in the Universe today, conventionally labelled as an "excess effective number of neutrino species", Δ Neff. It provides a powerful test of hitherto untested theoretical models based on fundamental theories such as String Theory. I begin by considering dark radiation in the LARGE Volume Scenario, a phenomenologically viable class of string compactifications. First I review how the minimal setup slightly overproduces axionic dark radiation via modulus decay. I then demonstrate that loop corrections to the main competing visible-sector decay process have a negligible effect and are unable to alleviate the tension with observations. In the following chapter I explore fibred extensions of the LARGE Volume Scenario. The predictions for Δ Neff are qualitatively different: in particular, models with a sequestered visible sector on D3 branes at a singularity are swamped by massless axions and decisively ruled out. I then consider TeV-scale supersymmetry in a model with anisotropic modulus stabilisation. If the Standard Model is realised on D7 branes wrapping the small volume cycle a hierarchy of soft terms is generated, which may have applications to natural supersymmetry. The final chapter takes a different approach and investigates the proposition that dark radiation, in the form of a Cosmic Axion Background, could explain the long-standing soft X-ray excess from galaxy clusters. I show for the Coma cluster that the morphology of the excess can be reproduced by axion-photon conversion in the intracluster magnetic field, provided the field is allowed to have more structure on smaller scales than typically assumed based on Faraday rotation data. This explanation requires an inverse axion-photon coupling M ∼ 1011 - 1012 GeV and a mean axion energy (ECAB) ∼ 50 - 250 eV.

A longitudinal epidemiological study of trypanosome infections in domestic livestock was carried out over thirteen months in Busia District, an endemic area of Rhodesian sleeping sickness. It was demonstrated that chemoprophylaxis of domestic livestock with Samorin ® (Rhône Poulenc, France) could virtually eliminate the reservoir of potentially human infective T. brucei spp. infections in domestic animals. In addition to being a potentially useful control measure during outbreaks of sleeping sickness, chemoprophylaxis showed a net economic benefit in the productivity of local cattle. The duration of chemoprophylaxis of domestic livestock with Ethidium ® (Laprovet, France) was much less, as was the economic benefit to livestock production, however the level of challenge was much less in this trial. From the relative preference of tsetse flies for each species of domestic animal and the prevalence and incidence of trypanosome infections, it was concluded that cattle and to a lesser extent pigs were the most important species of domestic livestock in the animal reservoir of Rhodesian sleeping sickness in Busia District. Of the risk factors investigated for cattle acquiring trypanosome infections, the most important was an existing trypanosome infection. The effect on the epidemiology of sleeping sickness of a greater than expected interaction between species of trypanosome infecting cattle offers a possible mechanism for the natural control of the animal reservoir of Rhodesian sleeping sickness. Various parasitological diagnostic techniques for the detection of trypanosome infections in cattle in the field were assessed. Maximum sensitivity of diagnosis and minimum bias in the relative importance of each species of trypanosome was achieved by selecting a suitable combination of diagnostic techniques.
