In response to the authors, I demonstrate how threshold concepts offer a means to both contextualise teaching and learning of quantum physics and help transform students into the culture of physics, and as a way to identify particularly troublesome concepts within quantum physics. By drawing parallels from my own doctoral research in another area of contemporary physics—special relativity—I highlight concepts that require an ontological change, namely a shift beyond the reality of everyday Newtonian experience such as time dilation and length contraction, as being troublesome concepts that can present barriers to learning with students often asking “is it real?”. Similarly, the domain of quantum physics requires students to move beyond “common sense” perception as it brings into sharp focus the difference between what is experienced via the sense perceptions and the mental abstraction of phenomena. And it’s this issue that highlights the important role imagery and creativity have both in quantum physics and in the evolution of physics more generally, and lies in stark contrast to the apparent mathematical focus and lack of opportunity for students to explore ontological issues evident in the authors’ research. By reflecting on the authors’ observations of a focus on mathematical formalisms and problem solving at the expense of alternative approaches, I explore the dialectic between Heisenberg’s highly mathematical approach and Schrodinger’s mechanical wave view of the atom, together with its conceptual imagery, at the heart of the evolution of quantum mechanics. In turn, I highlight the significance of imagery, imagination and intuition in quantum physics, together with the importance of adopting an epistemological pluralism—multiple ways of knowing and thinking—in physics education. Again drawing parallels with the authors’ work and my own, I identify the role thought experiments have in both quantum physics education and in physics more generally. By introducing the notion of play, I advocate adopting and celebrating multiple approaches of teaching and learning, including thought experiments, play, dialogue and a more conceptual approach inclusive of multiple forms of representation, that complements the current instructional, mathematical approach so as to provide better balance to learning, teaching and the curriculum.

is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/)., Flexible MoO3/silver nanowire (AgNW)/MoO3/TiO2/Epoxy electrodes with comparable performance to ITO were fabricated by a scalable solution-processed method with lamination assistance for transparent and conductive applications. Silver nanoparticle-based electrodes were also prepared for comparison. Using a simple spin-coating and lamination-assisted planarization method, a full solution-based approach allows preparation of AgNW-based composite electrodes at temperatures as low as 140 °C. The resulting flexible AgNW-based electrodes exhibit higher transmittance of 82% at 550 nm and lower sheet resistance about 12–15 Ω sq−1, in comparison with the values of 68% and 22–25 Ω sq−1 separately for AgNP based electrodes. Sequential deposition of monolayers, composed of nanoparticles with varied donor-acceptor concentration ratios, has allowed the fabrication of organic photovoltaic (OPV) active layers with engineered vertical morphology. The performance of polymer-polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-bis-N,N-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine):poly[(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazol-4,8-diyl)] (PFB:F8BT) and polymer-fullerene poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) nanoparticulate (NP), graded nanoparticulate (GNP) and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OPV devices have been studied. For both material systems the highest device VOC is observed for the graded structure. Furthermore, thermal treatments can be used to alleviate parasitic series resistance in the GNP devices, thus improving device JSC and efficiency. Overall, this work shows that the nanoparticle approach provides a new experimental lever for morphology control in OPV devices. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Cantilever devices have found applications in numerous scientific fields and instruments, including the atomic force microscope (AFM), and as sensors to detect a wide range of chemical and biological species. The mechanical properties, in particular, the spring constant of these devices is crucial when quantifying adhesive forces, material properties of surfaces, and in determining deposited mass for sensing applications. A key component in the spring constant of a cantilever is the plan-view shape. In recent years, the trapezoidal plan-view shape has become available since it offers certain advantages to fast-scanning AFM and can improve sensor performance in fluid environments. Euler beam equations relating cantilever stiffness to the cantilever dimensions and Young&rsquo, s modulus have been proven useful and are used extensively to model cantilever mechanical behaviour and calibrate the spring constant. In this work, we derive a simple correction factor to the Euler beam equation for a beam-shaped cantilever that is applicable to any cantilever with a trapezoidal plan-view shape. This correction factor is based upon previous analytical work and simplifies the application of the previous researchers formula. A correction factor to the spring constant of an AFM cantilever is also required to calculate the torque produced by the tip when it contacts the sample surface, which is also dependent on the plan-view shape. In this work, we also derive a simple expression for the torque for triangular plan-view shaped cantilevers and show that for the current generation of trapezoidal plan-view shaped AFM cantilevers, this will be a good approximation. We shall apply both these correction factors to determine Young&rsquo, s modulus for a range of trapezoidal-shaped AFM cantilevers, which are specially designed for fast-scanning. These types of AFM probes are much smaller in size when compared to standard AFM probes. In the process of analysing the mechanical properties of these cantilevers, important insights are also gained into their spring constant calibration and dimensional factors that contribute to the variability in their spring constant.

The use of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is increasing with new technologies working toward compact, flexible and transparent devices for use in medical and microfluidic systems. Electronic characterization of PDMS and other insulating materials is difficult due to charging, yet necessary for many applications where the interfacial structure is vital to device function or further modification. The outermost layer in particular is of importance as this is the area where chemical reactions such as surface functionalization will occur. Here, we investigate the valence band structure of the outermost layer and near surface area of PDMS through the use of metastable induced photoelectron spectroscopy (MIES) paired with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The chemical composition of the samples under investigation were measured via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the vertical distribution of the polymer was shown with neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (NICISS). Three separate methods for charge compensation are used for the samples, and their effectiveness is compared. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Metallic thin films have been evaluated as adhesive layers for first surface mirrors. Thin films (0.5-4nm thick) of Cr, Cu, Ge, Sn, and Ni, capped with an over layer of 100nm of Ag have been deposited by means of ion assisted electron beam evaporation onto glass substrates. The specular reflectance, conductivity, morphology, adhesion, and abrasion resistance of the mirrors have been assessed and compared. This work demonstrates the superior Ni and Ge adhesion and abrasion resistance to Ag thin films, while Cr and again Ni are the best candidates in terms of reflectance enhancement. In particular, 4nm of Ni increases the Ag reflectance from 95.7% to 96.7%, exhibits the strongest adhesion as determined by the cross hatch tape test and the lowest loss of material after the different abrasion tests is just 50% in comparison to 100% for Ag-coated glass substrates. Water-based polymer nanoparticle dispersions offer the prospect of addressing two of the main challenges associated with printing large area organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices; namely how to control the nanoscale architecture of the active layer and eliminate the need for hazardous organic solvents during device fabrication. However, to date, the efficiencies of nanoparticulate-based devices have been inferior to that of the corresponding bulk-heterojunction devices. Here we present an approach for producing optimised OPV devices from polymer nanoparticles via the fabrication of multilayered device architectures. We show that by controlling both nanoparticle morphology and inter-particle interactions it is now possible to build polyfluorene OPV devices from aqueous dispersions of nanoparticles that are more efficient than the corresponding bulk heterojunction devices. In particular we show that: (1) the polyfluorene nanoparticle morphology is suited to effective charge separation, (2) thermal treatment of the deposited layers results in improved interparticle connectivity and effective charge transport, and (3) the optimal device thickness is a delicate balance between the repair of layer defects and the creation of stress cracking in the nanoparticulate film. As such, this work offers insights for the development of printable photovoltaic devices based on water-dispersed nanoparticulate formulations. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Structure and morphology play a critical role in determining the performance of organic photovoltaic devices. In this paper, variation of the postannealing cooling rate is used to create a series of "snapshots" of the vertical and interfacial reorganization processes that occur upon annealing. The data show that slower cooling rates result in significantly enhanced device efficiencies primarily driven by increased short circuit current and fill factor. UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements are used to probe the origin of these improvements. Our results show evidence for a distinct and changing vertical stratification and interfacial structure in the device throughout the annealing process, with both composition and crystallinity varying through the active layer. The implications of these changes are discussed in terms of device properties. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Graphene has emerged as a material with a vast variety of applications. The electronic, optical and mechanical properties of graphene are strongly influenced by the number of layers present in a sample. As a result, the dimensional characterization of graphene films is crucial, especially with the continued development of new synthesis methods and applications. A number of techniques exist to determine the thickness of graphene films including optical contrast, Raman scattering and scanning probe microscopy techniques. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), in particular, is used extensively since it provides three-dimensional images that enable the measurement of the lateral dimensions of graphene films as well as the thickness, and by extension the number of layers present. However, in the literature AFM has proven to be inaccurate with a wide range of measured values for single layer graphene thickness reported (between 0.4 and 1.7 nm). This discrepancy has been attributed to tip-surface interactions, image feedback settings and surface chemistry. In this work, we use standard and carbon nanotube modified AFM probes and a relatively new AFM imaging mode known as PeakForce tapping mode to establish a protocol that will allow users to accurately determine the thickness of graphene films. In particular, the error in measuring the first layer is reduced from 0.1-1.3 nm to 0.1-0.3 nm. Furthermore, in the process we establish that the graphene-substrate adsorbate layer and imaging force, in particular the pressure the tip exerts on the surface, are crucial components in the accurate measurement of graphene using AFM. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is often used in transparent electrodes as a transparent conductive polymer, however encapsulation away from atmospheric water is often required. Here, we fabricate transparent, flexible silver nanowire (AgNW):single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) electrodes using graphene oxide (GO), mitigating the use of PEDOT:PSS. These GO/AgNW:SWCNT electrodes were found to be highly conductive with a sheet resistance of 2.2 Ω/□–5.9 Ω/□ and a work function of ~ 4.8 eV. The optical transmittance was 75.00 ± 0.02% with a haze value of 21.8 ± 0.8%. The figure of merit was shown to be comparable to indium tin oxide (ITO), at 297 Ω− 1. Finally, the electrodes were shown to be flexible with no reduction in conductivity after 1000 bend cycle/cycles. These PEDOT:PSS free electrodes have the potential to replace rigid commercial ITO electrodes in applications that require flexible, highly conductive transparent electrodes. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) is used to characterise the nanoscale electrical properties of many conducting and semiconducting materials. We investigate the effect of single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) modification of commercial Pt/Ir cantilevers on the sensitivity and image stability during C-AFM imaging. Pt/Ir cantilevers were modified with small bundles of SWCNTs via a manual attachment procedure and secured with a conductive platinum pad. AFM images of topography and current were collected from heterogeneous polymer and nanomaterial samples using both standard and SWCNT modified cantilevers. Typically, achieving a good current image comes at the cost of reduced feedback stability. In part, this is due to electrostatic interaction and increased tip wear upon applying a bias between the tip and the sample. The SWCNT modified tips displayed superior current sensitivity and feedback stability which, combined with superior wear resistance of SWCNTs, is a significant advancement for C-AFM. This article is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Licence., A roll-to-roll compatible, high throughput process is reported for the production of highly conductive, transparent planar electrode comprising an interwoven network of silver nanowires and single walled carbon nanotubes imbedded into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The planar electrode has a sheet resistance of between 4 and 7 Ω □−1 and a transmission of >86% between 800 and 400 nm with a figure of merit of between 344 and 400 Ω−1. The nanocomposite electrode is highly flexible and retains a low sheet resistance after bending at a radius of 5 mm for up to 500 times without loss. Organic photovoltaic devices containing the planar nanocomposite electrodes had efficiencies of ∼90% of control devices that used indium tin oxide as the transparent conducting electrode.

Highly conductive, transparent and flexible planar electrodes were fabricated using interwoven silver nanowires and single-walled carbon nanotubes (AgNW:SWCNT) in a PEDOT:PSS matrix via an epoxy transfer method from a silicon template. The planar electrodes achieved a sheet resistance of 6.6 +/- 0.0 Omega/square and an average transmission of 86% between 400 and 800 nm. A high figure of merit of 367 Omega(-1) is reported for the electrodes, which is much higher than that measured for indium tin oxide and reported for other AgNW composites. The AgNW: SWCNT: PEDOT: PSS electrode was used to fabricate low temperature (annealing free) devices demonstrating their potential to function with a range of organic semiconducting polymer: fullerene bulk heterojunction blend systems. Electrodes fabricated using commercially available silver nanowires (AgNWs) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) produced sheet resistances in the range 4-24 Omega square(-1) with specular transparencies up to 82 %. Increasing the aqueous dispersibility of SWCNTs decreased the bundle size present in the film resulting in improved SWCNT surface dispersion in the films without compromising transparency or sheet resistance. In addition to providing conduction pathways between the AgNW network, the SWCNTs also provide structural support, creating stable self-supporting films. Entanglement of the AgNWs and SWCNTs was demonstrated to occur in solution prior to deposition by monitoring the transverse plasmon resonance mode of the AgNWs during processing. The interwoven AgNW/SWCNT structures show potential for use in optoelectronic applications as transparent electrodes and as an ITO replacement. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Organic-soluble transition metal-substituted Dawson compounds [(n-C(4)H(9))(4)N](9)[P(2)W(17)O(61)M(Br)] (M(n+) = Co(2+), Ni(2+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+)), [(n-C(4)H(9))(4)N](7)[HP(2)W(17)O(61)M(Br)] (M(n+) = Cr(3+), Mn(3+) and Fe(3+)) and [K/(n-C(4)H(9))(4)N](10-n)[P(2)W(17)O(61)M(H(2)O)] (M(n+) = Ir(4+), Ru(3+) and Pd(2+)) have been investigated as oxygen transfer agents for H(2)O(2) to a series of primary allylic alcohols to generate epoxides under biphasic reaction conditions (1,2-dichloroethane/H(2)O) at 30 or 35 degrees C, such that the effect of variations in the substituted transition metals could be evaluated. The allylic alcohols involved the species R(1)R(2)C=C(R(3))CH(2)-OH (where R(1), R(2) and R(3) = H or Me), as well as cyclic (2-cyclohexen-1-ol), bicyclic [(R-)-(-)-myrtenol and (R-)-(-)-nopol] and species with two unsaturated sites (geraniol and nerol). The reactions are highly chemoselective and regioselective. The order of reactivity for the M(II)-substituted species is Pd(II)Zn(II)Co(II)Ni(II), and for M(III) and M(IV) substitution is Mn(III) approximately Ir(IV)Fe(III)Cr(III). The observed orders are consistent with the formation of metal(n+)-alcohol species as part of the reaction mechanism. For the more polarizing Ir(IV), however, Ir(IV)-alcoholate species are likely involved in the mechanism. Formation constants for the Mn(III) and Co(II)-phosphopolyoxotungstate-alcohol species with all of the above alcohols have been evaluated in 1,2-dichloroethane at 25 degrees C and range from 19.0-3.5 M(-1). The most likely transition state involves coordination of the alcohol to the transition metal substituted at the lacunary site, or alkoxide in the case of Ir(IV), along with interaction of the double bond of the alcohol with a peroxo group located at a W(VI) site adjacent to the substituted transition metal.

Water-based nanoparticulate (NP) and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices based on blends of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-N,N-bis(4-butylphenyl)-N,Ndiphenyl-1, 4-phenylenediamine) (PFB) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole (F8BT) have been fabricated with aluminium and calcium/aluminium cathodes. The NP devices exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) that are double that of the corresponding BHJ device. Moreover, the addition of calcium into the cathode structure results in a dramatic increase in open circuit voltage and PCEs approaching 1% for water-based polyfluorene OPV devices. Water-processable nanoparticle dispersions of semiconducting polymers offer an attractive approach to the fabrication of organic electronic devices since they offer: (1) control of nanoscale morphology and (2) environmentally friendly fabrication. Although the nature of phase segregation in these polymer nanoparticles is critical to device performance, to date there have been no techniques available to directly determine their intra-particle structure, which consequently has been poorly understood. Here, we present scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) compositional maps for nanoparticles fabricated from poly(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene-2,7-diyl-co-bis-N, N'-(4-butylphenyl)-bis-N, N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenedi-amine) (PFB) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) 1:1 blend mixtures. The images show distinct phase segregation within the nanoparticles. The compositional data reveals that, within these nanoparticles, PFB and F8BT segregate into a core–shell morphology, with an F8BT-rich core and a PFB-rich shell. Structural modelling demonstrates that the STXM technique is capable of quantifying morphological features on a sub-10 nm length scale; below the spot size of the incident focused x-ray beam. These results have important implications for the development of water-based 'solar paints' fabricated from microemulsions of semiconducting polymers. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

As an attempt to collect more in-plane emission power out of wavelength size two-dimensional photonic crystal defect lasers, edge-emitting photonic crystal double-heterostructure quantum well membrane lasers were fabricated by shortening the number of cladding periods on one side. 120μW peak output power was collected from the facet of the single mode laser at room temperature. Laser efficiencies were analyzed and agree very well with three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain modeling.

The authors have demonstrated a low switching voltage modulator comprised of a 12μm radius indium phosphide (InP)-based optical microdisk phase modulator in an external Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The chip-scale phase modulator operated with a measured Vπ of 0.6mV.
