Superscaling in electron scattering from nuclei is re-examined paying special attention to the definition of the averaged single-nucleon responses. The validity of the extrapolation of nucleon responses in the Fermi gas has been examined, which previously lacked a theoretical foundation. To address this issue, we introduce new averaged responses with a momentum distribution smeared around the Fermi surface, allowing for momenta above the Fermi momentum. This approach solves the problem of negativity in the extrapolation away from the scaling region and, at the same time, validates its use in the scaling analysis. This work has important implications for the interpretation of scaling data and contributes to the development of a more complete understanding of the scaling approach.

The effect of the center of mass motion on the high-momentum distributions of correlated nucleon pairs is studied by solving the Bethe-Goldstone equation in nuclear matter with the Granada nucleon-nucleon potential. We show that this coarse-grained potential reduces the problem to an algebraic linear system of five (ten) equations for uncoupled (coupled) partial waves that can be easily solved. The corresponding relative wave functions of correlated pn, pp and nn pairs are computed for different values of their CM momentum. We find that the pn pairs dominate the high-momentum tail of the relative momentum distribution, and that this only depends marginally on center of mass momentum. Our results provide further justification and agreement for the factorization approximation commonly used in the literature. An extended superscaling analysis of quasielastic electron scattering data is proposed by parametrizing the scaling function as the sum of a symmetric function corresponding to the emission of a single particle plus a contribution from the phase space of two-particle emission. The phase space of two-particle emission (2p2h) is multiplied by a q-dependent parameter that has been fitted to describe the tail behavior of the scaling function. This approach allows for an alternative description of the quasielastic electron scattering data, incorporating the contributions from both single-particle and two-particle emission processes induced by the one-body current and explaining the asymmetry of the scaling function. In a factorized schematic model based on the independent-pair approximation, the 2p2h parameter is related to the high-momentum distribution of the pair averaged over 2p-2h excitations. However, in the phenomenological fitting approach undertaken here, this coefficient includes other contributions such as interference with two-body currents and effects of the final-state interactions. A thorough understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering physics is crucial for the successful execution of the entire US neutrino physics program. Neutrino-nucleus interaction constitutes one of the biggest systematic uncertainties in neutrino experiments - both at intermediate energies affecting long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), as well as at low energies affecting coherent scattering neutrino program - and could well be the difference between achieving or missing discovery level precision. To this end, electron-nucleus scattering experiments provide vital information to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to be used in neutrino experiments. In this white paper, we highlight connections between electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering physics at energies ranging from 10s of MeV to a few GeV, review the status of ongoing and planned electron scattering experiments, identify gaps, and layout a path forward that benefits the neutrino community. We also highlight the systemic challenges with respect to the divide between the nuclear and high-energy physics communities and funding that presents additional hurdle in mobilizing these connections to the benefit of neutrino programs., Comment: 37 pages, contribution to Snowmass 2021

We reanalyze the scaling properties of inclusive quasielastic electron scattering from $^{12}$C by subtracting from the data the effects of two-particle emission. A model of relativistic meson-exchange currents (MEC) is employed within the mean field theory of nuclear matter, with scalar and vector potentials that induce an effective mass and a vector energy to the nucleons. A new phenomenological quasielastic scaling function is extracted from a selection of the data after the subtraction of the 2p-2h contribution. The resulting superscaling approach with relativistic effective mass (SuSAM*) can be used to compute the genuine quasielastic cross section without contamination of the 2p-2h channel that can then be added separately to obtain the total quasielastic plus two-nucleon emission response., 13 pages, 9 figures

The super-scaling approach (SuSA) model, based on the analogies between electron and neutrino interactions with nuclei, is reviewed and its application to the description of neutrino-nucleus scattering is presented. The contribution of both one- and two-body relativistic currents is considered. The model is validated with the (e, e) data, including also inelastic contributions for the inclusive reaction. A discussion of semi-inclusive reactions and their implications for charge-changing reactions of neutrinos is also presented. A selection of results for the inclusive neutrino reactions with change of charge is presented where theoretical predictions are compared with cross-section measurements from the main ongoing neutrino oscillation experiments. Due to the proliferation of IT companies developing web and mobile applications, computer programmers are in such high demand that universities can’t satisfy it with newly graduated students. In response, some organisations started to create coding bootcamps, providing intensive full-time courses focused on unemployed people or individuals seeking for a career change. There is, however, a different set of skills that is becoming increasingly required, but is not addressed by those courses: embedded programming. In fact, the Internet of Things is connecting every device to the internet, thus making knowledge on hardware and C/C++ programming very relevant skills. A group of computer science and electrical engineering university teachers, in collaboration with several industry stakeholders, have promoted an embedded systems programming course in C and C++. This course is based on an intensive project-based approach comprising 6 months of daylong classes followed by 9 months of paid internships. After two editions, thirty embedded programmers, with no relevant previous programming experience, have been placed with the partners’ working force. In this paper, the course organisation and pedagogical methodologies are described. Problems, challenges and adopted solutions are presented and analysed. The main descriptions have emerged from European cohorts, and the burden of the disease worldwide is unclear. We provide a detailed characterization of a large Brazilian cohort of ANO5 patients. Methods: A national cross-sectional study was conducted to describe clinical, histopathological, radiological, and molecular features of patients carrying recessive variants in ANO5. Correlation of clinical and genetic characteristics with different phenotypes was studied. Results: Thirty-seven patients from 34 nonrelated families with recessive mutations of ANO5 were identified. The most common phenotype was LGMD, observed in 25 (67.5%) patients, followed by pseudometabolic presentation in 7 (18.9%) patients, isolated asymptomatic hyperCKemia in 4 (10.8%) patients, and distal myopathy in a single patient. Nine patients presented axial involvement, including one patient with isolated axial weakness. The most affected muscles according to MRI were the semimembranosus and gastrocnemius, but paraspinal and abdominal muscles, when studied, were involved in most patients. Fourteen variants in ANO5 were identified, and the c.191dupA was present in 19 (56%) families. Sex, years of disease, and the presence of loss-of-function variants were not associated with specific phenotypes. Interpretation: We present the largest series of anoctaminopathy outside Europe. The most common European founder mutation c.191dupA was very frequent in our population. Gender, disease duration, and genotype did not determine the phenotype. The initial nucleus is described by means of a realistic spectral function S(p, epsilon) in which nucleon-nucleon correlations are implemented by using natural orbitals through the Jastrow method. The roles played by these correlations and by final-state interactions are analyzed and discussed. The model also includes the contribution of weak two-body currents in the two-particle two-hole sector, evaluated within a fully relativistic Fermi gas. The theoretical predictions are compared with a large set of experimental data for double-differential, single-differential, and total integrated cross sections measured by the MiniBooNE, MINER nu A, and T2K experiments. Good agreement with experimental data is found over the whole range of neutrino energies. The results are also in global good agreement with the predictions of the superscaling approach, which is based on the analysis of electron-nucleus scattering data, with only a few differences seen at specific kinematics.

Purpose To identify and validate risk factors that contribute to prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS) in patients undergoing resection for colorectal cancer. Methods This prospective cohort study included 1955 patients admitted to 22 hospitals for primary resection of colorectal cancer. Multivariate analyses were used to identify and validate risk factors, randomizing patients into a derivation and a validation cohort. Multiple correspondence and cluster analysis were performed to identify clinical subtypes based on LOS. Results The strongest independent predictors of prolonged LOS were postoperative reintervention, surgical site infection, open surgery, and distant metastasis. The multiple correspondence and cluster analysis provided three groups of patients in relation to prolonged LOS: patients with the longest LOS included the highest percentage of patients with open surgery, distant metastasis, deep surgical site infections, emergency admissions, additional diagnostic factors, and highly contaminated surgical sites. Patients with prolonged LOS (> 14 days) were more likely to develop adverse outcomes within 30 days after discharge. Conclusions Patients undergoing resection of colorectal cancer cluster into different groups based on LOS of the index admission. Those with prolonged LOS were more likely to develop adverse outcomes within 30 days after discharge. Some of the strongest independent predictors of prolonged LOS, such as surgical infections or open surgery, could be modified to reduce LOS and, in turn, other adverse outcomes.

We present the predictions of the SuSAv2-MEC model for the double differential charged-current muonic neutrino (antineutrino) cross section on water for the T2K neutrino (antineutrino) beam. We validate our model by comparing with the available inclusive electron scattering data on oxygen and compare our predictions with the recent T2K $��_��$-$^{16}$O data, finding good agreement at all kinematics. We show that the results are very similar to those obtained for $��_��-^{12}$C scattering, except at low energies, and we comment on the origin of this difference. We present the results of a recent study of meson-exchange two-body currents in lepton-nucleus inclusive scattering at various kinematics and for different nuclei within the Relativistic Fermi Gas model. We show that the associated nuclear response functions at their peaks scale as $A k_F^2$, for Fermi momentum $k_F$ going from 200 to 300 MeV/c and momentum transfer $q$ from $2k_F$ to 2 GeV/c. This behavior is different from what is found for the quasielastic response, which scales as $A/k_F$. We present our recent progress on the relativistic modeling of electron-nucleus reactions and compare our predictions with inclusive $^{12}$C ($e,e'$) experimental data in a wide kinematical region. The model, originally based on the superscaling phenomenon shown by electron-nucleus scattering data, has recently been improved through the inclusion of Relativistic Mean Field theory effects that take into account the enhancement of the transverse scaling function compared with its longitudinal counterpart. We also discuss the impact of meson-exchange currents (MEC) through the analysis of two-particle two-hole longitudinal and transverse contributions to electromagnetic response functions evaluated within the framework of the relativistic Fermi gas. The formalism is also extended to include the complete inelastic spectrum -- resonant, non-resonant and deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We give a brief review on the development of phenomenological NN interactions and the corresponding quantification of statistical uncertainties. We look into the uncertainty of effective interactions broadly used in mean field calculations through the Skyrme parameters and effective field theory counter-terms by estimating both statistical and systematic uncertainties stemming from the NN interaction. We present a detailed study of charged-current (CC) neutrino-nucleus reactions in a fully relativis- tic framework and comparisons with recent experiments spanning an energy range from hundreds of MeV up to 100 GeV within the SuperScaling Approach, which is based on the analysis of electron- nucleus scattering data and has been recently improved with the inclusion of Relativistic Mean Field theory effects. We also evaluate and discuss the impact of two-particle two-hole meson-exchange currents (2p-2h MEC) on neutrino-nucleus interactions through the analysis of two-particle two-hole axial and vector contributions to weak response functions in a fully relativistic Fermi gas. Background: The anxiety disorders specified in the fourth edition, text revision, of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR) are identified universally in human societies, and also show substantial cultural particularities in prevalence and symptomatology. Possible explanations for the observed epidemiological variability include lack of measurement equivalence, true differences in prevalence, and limited validity or precision of diagnostic criteria. One central question is whether, through inadvertent “over-specification” of disorders, the post-DSM-III nosology has missed related but somewhat different presentations of the same disorder because they do not exactly fit specified criteria sets. This review canvases the mental health literature for evidence of cross-cultural limitations in DSM-IV-TR anxiety disorder criteria. Methods: Searches were conducted of the mental health literature, particularly since 1994, regarding cultural or race/ethnicity-related factors that might limit the universal applicability of the diagnostic criteria for six anxiety disorders. Results: Possible mismatches between the DSM criteria and the local phenomenology of the disorder in specific cultural contexts were found for three anxiety disorders in particular. These involve the unexpectedness and 10-minute crescendo criteria in Panic Disorder; the definition of social anxiety and social reference group in Social Anxiety Disorder; and the priority given to psychological symptoms of worry in Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Limited evidence was found throughout, particularly in terms of neurobiological markers, genetic risk factors, treatment response, and other DSM-V validators that could help clarify the cross-cultural applicability of criteria. Conclusions :O n the basis of the available data, options and preliminary recommendations for DSM-V are put forth that should be further evaluated and tested. A retrospective review of 288 penetrating keratoplasties (PKP) for herpes simplex keratitis demonstrated a 60.4% survival rate of clear grafts at 3 years. A highly significant difference in corneal graft survival in severely vascularized corneas (57.1% at 3 years) versus non- or slightly vascularized corneas (82.8% at 3 years) was observed (P = 0.009). Prospectively HLA-A and -B matched grafts in vascularized corneas revealed a significantly improved graft survival when compared to unmatched grafts (P = 0.035). Corneal graft survival in eyes grafted 'à chaud' was not significantly below the graft survival of vascularized corneas with a clinically non-active herpetic corneal disease. Recurrence of herpes simplex in the graft was observed in an earlier postoperative period in HLA-A and -B matched grafts (P = 0.0004).

A group of 43 Australian Aborigines was typed for HLA--DR determinants and other antigens on B cells, using pregnancy sera from Caucasoid women. The group could not be considered as random, since a selection was made for an equal number of Au antigen positive and Au antigen negative individuals The typing results showed that the specificities DRw2, 4 and 8 were as well defined in this population as in Caucasoids, whereas the specificities DRw1, 3, 5 and 7 could not be defined. Even more interesting was the finding that a cluster of six sera, defining the local B cell specificity LB12, gave positive reactions in 41 out of 43 Aborigines. Although LB12 is found to be highly associated with DRw1, 2 and 6 in the Caucasoid population, in 36 cases the LB12 positive Aborigines could not be demonstrated to carry the specificities DRw1 or 2. The recognition of DRw6 is difficult at the moment and for the reason its presence or absence in this material is uncertain. However, three individuals typed positive for DRw4 and 8 and for LB12 as well. These findings strongly support the hypothesis that the genes coding for LB12 and its postulated allele LB13 are separate from the genes coding for the known DR determinants. LB12 is very likely identical to the recently described determinants DC1 (Tosi & Tanigaki 1979) and MB1 (Duquesnoy et al. 1979a).

The main purpose of Eurotransplant, an international organ exchange organisation, is to maximize the survival time of transplanted organs through tissue typing and matching. Regular proficiency testings are necessary to assess the repro-ducibility and the reliability of the HLA typings performed by the individual typing centres. Two different protocols have been used: 1) since 1978, 35 samples of blood and donor spleen were used for cell exchanges (CE) and typed by all participating laboratories; 2) since 1977 samples of donor spleen have been shipped to the reference laboratory in Leiden for retyping (RD) resulting in over 2600 comparable HLA typings. The disrepancy rates of the HLA-A, B, C and DR specificities were analysed over the years. A large number of discrepancies was due to false negative assignments which led to assumed homozygosity at one or more HLA-loci. The recognition of HLA-DR has improved dramatically but with much variation per DR specificity. The concordancy rates for HLA-AB + DR have improved from 40% in 1981 to 91% for CE and 80% for RD typings in 1984. The reproducibility of DR typings in individual laboratories also has improved greatly but there is still considerable variation between the different laboratories.

Sixty-two Dutch patients with the diagnosis paranoid schizophrenia (SCH) were HLA-A-, -B- and -C-typed. An increase in the frequencies of A9 (P = 0.02, relative risk 1.8) and B5 (P = 0.04, relative risk 1.9) was found. Although these correlations do not remain significant after correction for the number of antigens tested, both findings confirm other data from the literature, including the first published report from a population in Sweden. From all hitherto published literature data, the combined relative risks for A9 and B5 is significantly increased. These data strongly indicate that the distribution of HLA antigens among SCH patients is different from the control population.

This study compared the comprehension of Dutch reflexives (zichzelf 'SE-self') and pronouns (hem 'him') by Turkish-Dutch bilingual children (n=33) to the comprehension of English reflexives (himself) and pronouns (him) by Turkish-English bilingual children (n=39) documented by Marinis and Chondrogianni (2011). The children were administered a Picture Verification Task in which they had to judge whether the sentence matched the picture. Test sentences were of the type [NP says [NP V NP]], where the embedded subject could be a referential NP (the rabbit) or a QP (every rabbit), and the embedded object a pronoun or a reflexive. Differences were found in the QP antecedent conditions: the Turkish-Dutch bilingual children performed target-like on the reflexives but not on the pronouns; the Turkish-English bilingual children performed at chance on the reflexives but scored target-like on the pronouns. When these findings were compared to the Dutch monolingual and English monolingual children's results respectively, it was found that the bilingual children showed similar patterns to the monolingual children. Although language-specific properties of Dutch and English are likely to be at play, the possibility of cross-linguistic influence from Turkish is considered, too.

We evaluate and discuss the impact of meson-exchange currents (MECs) on charged-current quasielastic neutrino cross sections. We consider the nuclear transverse response arising from two-particle two-hole states excited by the action of electromagnetic, purely isovector meson-exchange currents in a fully relativistic framework based on the work by the Torino Collaboration [A. We present a new phenomenological Nucleon-Nucleon chiral potential fitted to 925 pp and 1743 np scattering data selected from the Granada-2013 NN-database up to a laboratory energy of $125$ MeV with 20 short distance parameters and three chiral constants $c_1$, $c_3$ and $c_4$ with $\chi^2/\nu = 1.02$. Special attention is given to testing the normality of the residuals which allows for a sound propagation of statistical errors from the experimental data to the potential parameters, phase-shifts, scattering amplitudes and counter-terms. This fit allows for a new determination of the chiral constants $c_1$, $c_3$ and $c_4$ compatible with previous determinations from NN data. This new interactions is found to be softer than other high quality potentials by undertaking a Weinberg eigenvalue analysis. We further explore the interplay between the error analysis and the assumed form of the short distance interaction. The present work shows that it is possible to fit NN scattering with a TPE chiral potential fulfilling all necessary statistical requirements up to 125 MeV and shows unequivocal non-vanishing D-wave short distance pieces., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. We analyze the low energy NN interaction by confronting statistical vs systematic uncertainties. This is carried out with the help of model potentials fitted to the Granada-2013 database where a statistically meaningful partial wave analysis comprising a total of $6713$ np and pp published scattering data from 1950 till 2013 below $350 {\rm MeV}$ has been made. We extract threshold parameters uncertainties from the coupled channel effective range expansion up to $j \le 5$. We find that for threshold parameters systematic uncertainties are generally at least an order of magnitude larger than statistical uncertainties. Similar results are found for np phase-shifts and amplitude parameters., 18 pages. 6 tables. 8 Figures. We compute the binding energy of triton with realistic statistical errors stemming from NN scattering data uncertainties and the deuteron and obtain $E_t=-7.638(15) \, {\rm MeV}$. Setting the numerical precision as $\Delta E_t^{\rm num} \lesssim 1 \, {\rm keV}$ we obtain the statistical error $\Delta E_t^{\rm stat}= 15(1) \, {\rm keV}$ which is mainly determined by the channels involving relative S-waves. This figure reflects the uncertainty of the input NN data, more than two orders of magnitude larger than the experimental precision $\Delta E_t^{\rm exp}= 0.1 \, {\rm keV}$ and provides a bottleneck in the realistic precision that can be reached. This suggests an important reduction in the numerical precision and hence in the computational effort., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

We construct a coordinate-space chiral potential, including $��$-isobar intermediate states in its two-pion-exchange component. The contact interactions entering at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading orders ($Q^2$ and $Q^4$, respectively, $Q$ denoting generically the low momentum scale) are rearranged by Fierz transformations to yield terms at most quadratic in the relative momentum operator of the two nucleons. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database, consisting of 2309 $pp$ and 2982 $np$ data (including, respectively, 148 and 218 normalizations) in the laboratory-energy range 0--300 MeV. For the total 5291 $pp$ and $np$ data in this range, we obtain a $��^2$/datum of roughly 1.3 for a set of three models characterized by long- and short-range cutoffs, $R_{\rm L}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ respectively, ranging from $(R_{\rm L},R_{\rm S})=(1.2,0.8)$ fm down to $(0.8,0.6)$ fm. Nucleon-Nucleon potentials are commonplace in nuclear physics and are determined from a finite number of experimental data with limited precision sampling the scattering process. We study the statistical assumptions implicit in the standard least squares fitting procedure and apply, along with more conventional tests, a tail sensitive quantile-quantile test as a simple and confident tool to verify the normality of residuals. We show that the fulfilment of normality tests is linked to a judicious and consistent selection of a nucleon-nucleon database. These considerations prove crucial to a proper statistical error analysis and uncertainty propagation. We illustrate these issues by analyzing about 8000 proton-proton and neutron-proton scattering published data. The prevailing “dis-association” between the scientific studies of dissociation and somatization is discussed, particularly in reference to the general “decontextualization” of dissociative and somatic experiences from their sociocultural context. The claim is made that this constitutes a fragmentation, in the professional sense, of naturally related phenomena. Conceptual and sociohistorical factors are identified that, at least partly, seem to explain these artificial divisions. Empirical evidence of the co-morbidity of dissociative and somatic symptoms is reviewed and some proposed theoretical notions are discussed. The role of cultural factors in shaping dissociative and somatic experiences is examined at the levels of (a) awareness of an event, (b) significance ofthat event, (c) emotional response, (d) locus of experience (i.e., somatic or psychological), (e) symptomatic response, and (f) social interaction. The partition of W16 into two subtypic determinants was suggested by its segregation with either W4(4a) or W6(4b) in families. It was confirmed by the serologic reactions of two antisera each of which recognized only one of its subtypic determinants. Gene frequencies of 0.01417 and 0.02711 were tentatively assigned to its W4 and W6 variants respectively.

Data on $����$ hypernuclei provide a unique method to learn details about the strangeness S =- 2 sector of the baryon-baryon interaction. From the free space Bonn-J��lich potentials, determined from data on baryon-baryon scattering in the S = 0, -1 channels, we construct an interaction in the S =-2 sector to describe the experimentally known LL hypernuclei. After including short-range (Jastrow) and RPA correlations, we find masses for these LL hypernuclei in a reasonable agreement with data, taking into account theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Despite great theoretical efforts the NN interaction can only be determined with a finite precision, implying an error upper bound for nuclear masses. We analyze for the first time the problem of estimating the systematic errors related to the form of the potential and their impact on nuclear binding. To this end we exploit the concept of coarse grained interactions to typical nuclear wavelengths. Our estimate gives an error of 0.1-0.4 MeV for the binding energy per particle and paves the way for ab initio calculations tailored to such a precision., 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

This study examined the relationships of dissociation and childhood trauma with ataque de nervios.Forty Puerto Rican psychiatric outpatients were evaluated for frequency of ataque de nervios, dissociative symptoms, exposure to trauma, and mood and anxiety psychopathology. Blind conditions were maintained across assessments. Data for 29 female patients were analyzed.Among these 29 patients, clinician-rated dissociative symptoms increased with frequency of ataque de nervios. Dissociative Experiences Scale scores and diagnoses of panic disorder and dissociative disorders were also associated with ataque frequency, before corrections were made for multiple comparisons. The rate of childhood trauma was uniformly high among the patients and showed no relationship to dissociative symptoms and disorder or number of ataques.Frequent ataques de nervios may, in part, be a marker for psychiatric disorders characterized by dissociative symptoms. Childhood trauma per se did not account for ataque status in this group of female outpatients.

This study chanlcterizes the HLA class I and class II antigens in a group of patients with vitiligo and a control group, both of Dutch descent. Earlier reports had shown a significant positive association with DR4 and a significant negative association with DR3. We found that, after correction for the broad antigens studied, only Cw7 and DR6 were significantly associated with vitiligo. The significant positive association of DR6 with vitiligo is interesting since vitiligo has an autoimmune component in its pathogenesis and DR6 may be a marker for high immune responsiveness.

The association between HLA-DR antigens and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was investigated in a well-characterized cohort of RA patients who were followed from the beginning of the disease (mean followup 6 years). The frequencies of HLA-DR antigens in patients with possible or probable RA (n = 49) were similar to those in controls. In patients with definite RA (n = 134), the frequencies of DR1, DR4, and DRw53 were increased, whereas the frequencies of DR2, DR3, DRw6, DRw13, and DRw52 were decreased, compared with controls. Comparison of HLA-DR frequencies in patients with definite RA subclassified according to the severity of the disease at the end of the followup period revealed a difference only in the frequency of DR4, which was increased in patients with progressive RA (59.2%) compared with those who had mild RA (34.8%). Further analysis showed that, compared with DR4-negative RA patients, DR4-positive patients had more swollen joints, higher scores on the Ritchie articular index, the Health Assessment Questionnaire, and the Steinbrocker functional classification, more radiologic abnormalities, and more use of second-line drugs. Also, the rate of progression of radiologic abnormalities, functional classification, and use of second-line drugs was higher in DR4-positive patients. We conclude that DR4 is associated with a more severe disease course, and is a prognostic marker in early RA.

We review Quasielastic (QE) inclusive and semi--inclusive neutrino/antineutrino Charged Current (CC) and Neutral Current (NC) induced nuclear reactions at intermediate energies. We pay special attention to nuclear corrections besides Pauli blocking: Long and Short range nuclear correlations (RPA and SRC) and particle and hole Spectral Functions (SF). We also critically review the use of the Plane and Distorted Wave Impulse approximations (PWIA and DWIA) to describe inclusive one nucleon knockout reactions off nuclei. In this context, we present results from a Monte Carlo cascade method to account for the rescattering of the outgoing nucleon. The effect of matching for the HLA antigens has been well established as important in the prognosis of kidney grafts. By analyzing the effect of matching on first transplants from unrelated donors in specific intervals up to 3 years posttransplantation, we show that the effect of HLA-DR matching is strongest in the first 5 months following transplantation (relative risks of graft failure 1.31 and 1.77 for 1 and 2 HLA-DR mismatches, respectively, compared with no mismatches). For patients whose grafts remained functioning after 5 months, there was no significant further improvement in graft survival to 3 years (relative risks 1.16 and 0.98 for 1 and 2 HLA-DR mismatches, respectively, compared with no mismatches)--i.e., the gain in graft survival by matching for HLA-DR appears to be due to its influence in the first 5 months following transplantation. For HLA-B, the matching effect was evident both before and after 5 months (relative risks 1.11 and 1.27 for 1 and 2 HLA-B mismatches, respectively, compared with no mismatches and modelled as constant over the 3-year period), whereas no effect of HLA-A matching was evident in the period up to 3 years.

Fifty-seven patients with severe Graves’ ophthalmopathy were treated with corticosteroids. Therapeutic outcome was assessed according to predetermined criteria as response (n = 37) or non-response (n = 20) to therapy. Patients were typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR and -DQ. HLA-DR4 was completely absent in the 20 non-responder patients (corrected p value = 0.042). In the responder group 14 of the 37 patients were HLA-DR4 positive. This study shows that in Graves’ ophthalmopathy patients the presence of HLA-DR4 is associated with a good response to corticosteroid therapy. The frequency of HLA-DR4 in the Graves’ ophthalmopathy population as a whole, however, was not different from normal (25% versus 26%). But as reported previously, the frequency of HLA-DR3 was significantly increased in the Graves’ ophthalmopathy patients when compared to healthy blood donors (47% versus 24%, corrected p value = 0.02). No significant deviations were found in the HLA-A, -B, or -C loci.

We derive the equations for the gravity assist manoeuvre in the general 2D case without the constraints of circular planetary orbits or widely different masses as assumed by Broucke, and obtain the slingshot conditions and maximum energy gain for arbitrary mass ratios of two colliding rigid bodies. Using the geometric view developed in an earlier paper by the authors the possible trajectories are computed for both attractive or repulsive interactions yielding a further insight on the slingshot mechanics and its parametrization.
