Weyl semimetals hold great promise in revolutionizing nonreciprocal optical components due to their unique topological properties. By exhibiting nonreciprocal magneto-optical effects without necessitating an external magnetic field, these materials offer remarkable miniaturization opportunities and reduced energy consumption. However, their intrinsic topological robustness poses a challenge for applications demanding tunability. In this work, we introduce an innovative approach to enhance the tunability of their response, utilizing multilayered configurations of twisted anisotropic Weyl semimetals. Our design enables controlled and reversible isolation by adjusting the twist angle between the anisotropic layers. When implemented in the Faraday geometry within the mid-IR frequency range, our design delivers impressive isolation, exceeding 50 dB, while maintaining a minimal insertion loss of just 0.33 dB. Moreover, the in-plane anisotropy of Weyl semimetals eliminates one or both polarizers of a conventional isolator geometry, significantly reducing the overall dimensions. These results set the stage for creating highly adaptable, ultra-compact optical isolators that can propel the fields of integrated photonics and quantum technology applications to new heights.

Efficiently receiving underwater sound remotely from air is a long-standing challenge in acoustics hindered by the large impedance mismatch at the water-air interface. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a technique for remote and efficient water-to-air eavesdropping through phase-engineered impedance matching metasurfaces. By judiciously engineering an ultrathin mechanically-rigid boundary, we make the water-air interface acoustically transparent and at the same time we are able to pattern the transmitted wavefront, enabling efficient control over the effective spatial location of a distant airborne sensor such that it can measure underwater signals with large signal-to-noise ratio as if placed close to the physical underwater source. Such airborne eavesdropping of underwater sound is experimentally demonstrated with a measured sensitivity enhancement exceeding 38 dB at 8 kHz. We further demonstrate opportunities for orbital-angular-momentum-multiplexed communications and underwater acoustic communications. Synthetic magnetism has been recently realized using spatiotemporal modulation patterns, producing non-reciprocal steering of charge-neutral particles such as photons and phonons. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate a non-reciprocal acoustic system composed of three compact cavities interlinked with both dynamic and static couplings, in which phase-correlated modulations induce a synthetic magnetic flux that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Within the rotating wave approximation, the transport properties of the system are controlled to efficiently realize large non-reciprocal acoustic transport. By optimizing the coupling strengths and modulation phases, we achieve frequency-preserved unidirectional transport with 45-dB isolation ratio and 0.85 forward transmission. Structural colors generated due to light scattering from static all-dielectric metasurfaces have successfully enabled high-resolution, high-saturation, and wide-gamut color printing applications. Despite recent advances, most demonstrations of these structure-dependent colors lack post-fabrication tunability. This hinders their applicability for front-end dynamic display technologies. Phase-change materials (PCMs), with significant contrast of their optical properties between their amorphous and crystalline states, have demonstrated promising potentials in reconfigurable nanophotonics. Herein, we leverage tunable all-dielectric reflective metasurfaces made of newly emerged classes of low-loss optical PCMs, i.e., antimony trisulphide (Sb$_2$S$_3$) and antimony triselenide (Sb$_2$Se$_3$), with superb characteristics to realize switchable, high-saturation, high-efficiency and high-resolution dynamic meta-pixels. Exploiting polarization-sensitive building blocks, the presented meta-pixel can generate two different colors when illuminated by either one of two orthogonally polarized incident beams. Such degrees of freedom (i.e., material phase and polarization state) enable a single reconfigurable metasurface with fixed geometrical parameters to generate four distinct wide-gamut colors. We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, an electrically-driven micro-scale display through the integration of phase-change metasurfaces with an on-chip heater formed by transparent conductive oxide. The physics of systems that cannot be described by a Hermitian Hamiltonian, has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years, motivated by their nontrivial responses and by a plethora of applications for sensing, lasing, energy transfer/harvesting, topology and quantum networks. Electromagnetics is an inherently non-Hermitian research area because all materials are lossy, loss and gain distributions can be controlled with various mechanisms, and the underlying systems are open to radiation. Therefore, the recent developments in non-Hermitian physics offer exciting opportunities for a broad range of basic research and engineering applications relevant to the antennas and propagation community. In this work, we offer a tutorial geared at introducing the unusual electromagnetic phenomena emerging in non-Hermitian systems, with particular emphasis on a sub-class of these systems that obey parity-time (PT) symmetry. We discuss the basic concepts behind this topic and explore their implications for various phenomena. We first discuss the basic features of P, T and PT operators applied to electromagnetic and quantum mechanical phenomena. We then discuss the exotic response of PT-symmetric electromagnetic structures and their opportunities, with particular attention to singularities, known as exceptional points, emerging in these systems, and their unusual scattering response., To be submitted to IEEE journal

Polaritons, coupled excitations of photons and dipolar matter excitations, can propagate along anisotropic metasurfaces with either hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion. At the transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion (corresponding to a topological transition), various intriguing phenomena are found, such as an enhancement of the photonic density of states, polariton canalization and hyperlensing. Here we investigate theoretically and experimentally the topological transition and the polaritonic coupling of deeply subwavelength elements in a uniaxial infrared-phononic metasurface, a grating of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoribbons. By hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging, we observe, for the first time, a synthetic transverse optical phonon resonance (that is, the strong collective near-field coupling of the nanoribbons) in the middle of the hBN Reststrahlen band, yielding a topological transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion. We further visualize and characterize the spatial evolution of a deeply subwavelength canalization mode near the transition frequency, which is a collimated polariton that is the basis for hyperlensing and diffraction-less propagation. Our results provide fundamental insights into the role of polaritonic near-field coupling in metasurfaces for creating topological transitions and polariton canalization.

Acoustic spoof surface waves are supported at the interface between a fluid and a corrugated rigid plate, and their dispersion is very sensitive to minute changes in the fluid parameters. Relying on this distinct feature, we design and numerically analyze the acoustic analogue of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on acoustic spoof surface waves, and demonstrate its potential for sensing of binary gas mixtures. The design procedure of the Mach-Zehnder gas sensor is presented, together with the structure response for different concentration of carbon monoxide in CO/air mixture, confirming the high sensitivity of the proposed structure.

The recently emerged concepts of coherent perfect absorption (CPA), i.e., the timereversed counterpart of a laser and its generalization to Hermitian systems, coherent virtual absorption (CVA), are shown to be ideally suited for all-optical light manipulation. In this work, we demonstrate how the concept of coherent excitation can pave the way to light scattering control in an extreme fashion in non-Hermitian PT-symmetrical systems supporting an embedded eigenstate.

Epsilon near zero (ENZ) materials have been capturing the attention of different research communities in the last decade. Strong light-matter interaction enabled by ENZ regime has been exploited for realization of Purcell-effect enhancement, perfect absorbers, enhanced nonlinear effects and active opto-electronic devices. ENZ regime was also shown to enable peculiar phenomena due to inherent “wavelength stretching” – tailoring the radiation pattern and directivity, as well as the effect of supercoupling [1]. However, both natural and artificial ENZ materials suffer from high losses which has been a major obstacle for their application. While the intrinsic material loss is unavoidable, radiation loss of the modes supported by structures with ENZ can be minimized through the concept of embedded eigenstates (EE) or bound states in the continuum (BIC). Namely, it has recently been shown that ENZ materials are instrumental for engineering EEs, which offer theoretically unlimited Q-factors and field enhancements [2]. Here we explore structures with ENZ materials supporting EEs and quasi-EEs with the goal of minimizing radiation loss and thereby improving the Q-factors and field enhancements of the supported leaky bulk plasmon modes. Furthermore, we propose a multilayer non-Hermitian PT-symmetric structure, shown at the inset of figure 1(a), in order to compensate for both material and radiation loss. In this way we obtain quasi-EEs and demonstrate a Q-factor of ~108, along with extreme field enhancement of ~104, figure 1(a) and 1(b). Lastly, we demonstrate that these values can be made arbitrarily high with increasing the number of layers. We believe that these results are promising for light trapping, non-linear optical effects and sensing.

Supplement 1

Metasurfaces are thin two-dimensional metamaterial layers that allow or inhibit the propagation of electromagnetic waves in desired directions. For example, metasurfaces have been demonstrated to produce unusual scattering properties of incident plane waves or to guide and modulate surface waves to obtain desired radiation properties. These properties have been employed, for example, to create innovative wireless receivers and transmitters. In addition, metasurfaces have recently been proposed to confine electromagnetic waves, thereby avoiding undesired leakage of energy and increasing the overall efficiency of electromagnetic instruments and devices. The main advantages of metasurfaces with respect to the existing conventional technology include their low cost, low level of absorption in comparison with bulky metamaterials, and easy integration due to their thin profile. Due to these advantages, they are promising candidates for real-world solutions to overcome the challenges posed by the next generation of transmitters and receivers of future high-rate communication systems that require highly precise and efficient antennas, sensors, active components, filters, and integrated technologies. This Roadmap is aimed at binding together the experiences of prominent researchers in the field of metasurfaces, from which explanations for the physics behind the extraordinary properties of these structures shall be provided from viewpoints of diverse theoretical backgrounds. Other goals of this endeavour are to underline the advantages and limitations of metasurfaces, as well as to lay out guidelines for their use in present and future electromagnetic devices. This Roadmap is divided into five sections: 1. Metasurface based antennas. In the last few years, metasurfaces have shown possibilities for advanced manipulations of electromagnetic waves, opening new frontiers in the design of antennas. In this section, the authors explain how metasurfaces can be employed to tailor the radiation properties of antennas, their remarkable advantages in comparison with conventional antennas, and the future challenges to be solved. 2. Optical metasurfaces. Although many of the present demonstrators operate in the microwave regime, due either to the reduced cost of manufacturing and testing or to satisfy the interest of the communications or aerospace industries, part of the potential use of metasurfaces is found in the optical regime. In this section, the authors summarize the classical applications and explain new possibilities for optical metasurfaces, such as the generation of superoscillatory fields and energy harvesters. 3. Reconfigurable and active metasurfaces. Dynamic metasurfaces are promising new platforms for 5G communications, remote sensing and radar applications. By the insertion of active elements, metasurfaces can break the fundamental limitations of passive and static systems. In this section, we have contributions that describe the challenges and potential uses of active components in metasurfaces, including new studieson non-Foster, parity-time symmetric, and non-reciprocal metasurfaces. 4. Metasurfaces with higher symmetries. Recent studies have demonstrated that the properties of metasurfaces are influenced by the symmetries of their constituent elements. Therefore, by controlling the properties of these constitutive elements and their arrangement, one can control the way in which the waves interact with the metasurface. In this section, the authors analyze the possibilities of combining more than one layer of metasurface, creating a higher symmetry, increasing the operational bandwidth of flat lenses, or producing cost-effective electromagnetic bandgaps. 5. Numerical and analytical modelling of metasurfaces. In most occasions, metasurfaces are electrically large objects, which cannot be simulated with conventional software. Modelling tools that allow the engineering of the metasurface properties to get the desired response are essential in the design of practical electromagnetic devices. This section includes the recent advances and future challenges in three groups of techniques that are broadly used to analyze and synthesize metasurfaces: circuit models, analytical solutions and computational methods.

Monolayer (1L) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are attractive materials for several optoelectronic applications because of their strong excitonic resonances and valley-selective response. Valley excitons in 1L-TMDCs are formed at opposite points of the Brillouin zone boundary, giving rise to a valley degree of freedom that can be treated as a pseudospin and may be used as a platform for information transport and processing. However, short valley depolarization times and relatively short exciton lifetimes at room temperature prevent using valley pseudospin in on-chip integrated valley devices. Recently it has been demonstrated how coupling these materials to optical nanoantennas and metasurfaces can overcome this obstacle. Here, we review the state-of-the-art advances in valley-selective directional emission and exciton sorting in 1L-TMDC mediated by nanostructures and nanoantennas. We briefly discuss the optical properties of 1L-TMDCs paying special attention to their photoluminescence/absorption spectra, dynamics of valley depolarization and valley Hall effect. Then, we review recent works on nanostructures for valley-selective directional emission from 1L-TMDCs.

A non-reciprocal device using a space-time modulation scheme. By applying the space-time modulation scheme, reciprocity in radiation and scattering scenarios is prevented. Such a scheme utilizes a linear system with simple, compact and inexpensive electronic components compared to the current use of bulky duplexers and non-reciprocal magnet based phase shifters to provide non-reciprocity. One such linear system involves traveling-wave antennas loaded with voltage dependent capacitors that are modulated in space and time thereby allowing the antenna to transmit with high directivity in a certain direction and not receive from that direction. Another linear system involves a resonant metasurface characterized by transverse spatiotemporal gradients, where the spatiotemporal gradients include periodically modulated impedances thereby causing a non-reciprocal transmission response. In this manner, a signal that propagates and impinges on the surface at a given direction will be fully transmitted while a signal propagating from the complementary direction will be fully reflected.

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are formed at K and K' points at the boundary of the Brillouin zone. They acquire a valley degree of freedom, which may be used as a complementary platform for information transport and processing. In a different context, metasurfaces consisting of engineered arrays of polarizable inclusions have enabled the manipulation of light in unprecedented ways, and found applications in imaging, optical information processing, and cloaking. Here, we demonstrate that, by coupling a MoS2 monolayer to a suitably designed metasurface consisting of asymmetric grooves, valley polarized excitons can be sorted and spatially separated even at room temperature. Emission from valley excitons is also separated in K-space, i.e., photons with opposite helicity are emitted to different directions. Our work demonstrates that metasurfaces can facilitate valley transport and establish an interface between valleytronic and photonic devices, thus addressing outstanding challenges in the nascent field of valleytronics.

Confining electromagnetic energy is crucial to enhance light-matter interactions, with important implications for science and technology. Here, we discuss the opportunities offered by trapping and confining light in open structures, based on the concept of embedded eigenstates within the radiation continuum enabled by zero-index metamaterials. Building upon the physical insights offered by our analysis, we put forward a general platform that allows realizing extremely high field enhancements in open structures under external illumination. Structures supporting embedded eigenstates represent a rare example of physical systems in which extreme - in principle unbounded - responses can be tamed. Our proposed design recipe to realize bound states in the continuum also offers a simple model that allows testing important questions that surround the concept of embedded eigenstates, such as their effect on the local density of photonic states. Our findings help clarifying which nano-optical and radio-wave applications may benefit from this unusual and singular response.

Strong spatial confinement and highly reduced dielectric screening provide monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with strong many-body effects, thereby possessing optically forbidden excitonic states (i.e., dark excitons) at room temperature. Herein, we explore the interaction of surface plasmons with dark excitons in hybrid systems consisting of stacked gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) and monolayer WS2. We observe a narrow Fano resonance when the hybrid system is surrounded by water, and we attribute the narrowing of the spectral Fano linewidth to the plasmon-enhanced decay of dark K-K excitons. Our results reveal that dark excitons in monolayer WS2 can strongly modify Fano resonances in hybrid plasmon-exciton systems and can be harnessed for novel optical sensors and active nanophotonic devices.

The recent surge of interest in temporal modulation schemes to induce magnet-free non-reciprocity has inspired several exciting opportunities for photonic technology. Here, we investigate a scheme to realize free-space isolators and highly non-reciprocal mirrors with weak modulation imparted by an acoustic wave. Conventional optical mirrors are reciprocal: in a given plane of incidence, reflection is independent of the sign of the angle of incidence, which enables two people to simultaneously look at each other through their reflection. In contrast, we propose a strategy to dramatically break this symmetry by exploiting resonant interactions between a travelling acoustic wave and highly resonant guided optical modes, inducing total reflection of an optical beam at a given angle, and no reflection at the negative angle. Different from conventional acousto-optic isolators, which are based on non-resonant frequency conversion and filtering, our proposal operates at the frequency of the optical signal by tailoring the resonant properties of the structure as well as the acoustic wave frequency and intensity, enabling 50 dB isolation with modest modulation requirements. Operation in reflection allows for close-to-zero insertion loss, enabling disruptive opportunities in our ability to control and manipulate photons.

High-index dielectric nanoparticles have become a powerful platform for modern light science, enabling various fascinating applications, especially in nonlinear nanophotonics for which they enable special types of optical nonlinearity, such as electron-hole plasma photoexcitation, which are not inherent to plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we propose a novel geometry for highly tunable all-dielectric nanoantennas, consisting of a chain of silicon nanoparticles excited by an electric dipole source, which allows tuning their radiation properties via electron-hole plasma photoexcitation. We show that the slowly guided modes determining the Van Hove singularity of the nanoantenna are very sensitive to the nanoparticle permittivity, opening up the ability to utilize this effect for efficient all-optical modulation. We show that by pumping several boundary nanoparticles with relatively low intensities may cause dramatic variations in the nanoantenna radiation power patterns and Purcell factor. We also demonstrate that ultrafast pumping of the designed nanoantenna allows unidirectional launching of surface plasmon-polaritons, with interesting implications for modern nonlinear nanophotonics.

A non-reciprocal device incorporating metamaterials which exhibit non-reciprocity through angular momentum biasing. The metamaterial, such as a ring resonator, is angular-momentum biased. This is achieved by applying a suitable mechanical or spatio-temporal modulation to resonant inclusions of the metamaterial, thereby producing strong non-reciprocity. In this manner, non-reciprocity can be produced without requiring the use of large and bulky magnets to produce a static magnetic field. The metamaterials of the present invention can be realized by semiconducting and/or metallic materials which are widely used in integrated circuit technology, and therefore, contrary to magneto-optical materials, can be easily integrated into the non-reciprocal devices and large microwave or optical systems. The metamaterials of the present invention can be compact at various frequencies due to the enhanced wave-matter interaction in the constituent resonant inclusions. Additionally, by using the metamaterials of the present invention, the power consumed in the biasing network is drastically reduced.

Achievement of all-optical ultrafast signal modulation and routing by a low-loss nanodevice is a crucial step towards an ultracompact optical chip with high performance. Here, we propose a specifically designed silicon dimer nanoantenna, which is tunable via photoexcitation of dense electron-hole plasma with ultrafast relaxation rate. Basing on this concept, we demonstrate the effect of beam steering up to 20 degrees via simple variation of incident intensity, being suitable for ultrafast light routing in an optical chip. The effect is demonstrated both in the visible and near-IR spectral regions for silicon and germanium based nanoantennas. We also reveal the effect of electron-hole plasma photoexcitation on local density of states (LDOS) in the dimer gap and find that the orientation averaged LDOS can be altered by 50\%, whereas modification of the projected LDOS can be even more dramatic: almost 500\% for transverse dipole orientation. Moreover, our analytical model sheds light on transient dynamics of the studied nonlinear nanoantennas, yielding all temporal characteristics of the proposed ultrafast nanodevice. The proposed concept paves the ways to creation of low-loss, ultrafast, and compact devices for optical signal modulation and routing.

We report on a new concept of cloaking objects in diffusive light regime using the paradigm of the scattering cancellation and mantle cloaking techniques. We show numerically that an object can be made completely invisible to diffusive photon density waves, by tailoring the diffusivity constant of the spherical shell enclosing the object. This means that photons' flow outside the object and the cloak made of these spherical shells behaves as if the object were not present. Lens design for focusing and imaging has been optimized through centuries of developments; however, conventional lenses, even in their most ideal realizations, still suffer from fundamental limitations, such as limits in resolution and the presence of optical aberrations, which are inherent to the laws of refraction. Although some of these limitations have been at least theoretically relaxed with the advent of metamaterials, several challenges still stand in the path toward ideal aberration-free imaging. By applying the optical nanocircuit concepts to metasurfaces, we propose an effective route to locally control light transmission over a deeply subwavelength scale. This concept realizes the optical equivalent of a transmitarray, whose use is demonstrated for light bending and focusing with unprecedented efficiency over a subwavelength distance, with crucial benefits for nano-optics applications. We introduce the concept and practical design of broadband, ultrathin cloaks based on non-Foster, negatively capacitive metasurfaces. By using properly tailored, active frequency-selective screens conformal to an object, within the realm of practical realization, is shown to enable drastically reduced scattering over a wide frequency range in the microwave regime, orders of magnitude broader than any available passive cloaking technology. We discuss and clarify some misleading statements appeared in a recent article on negative refraction in metamaterials. In this comment, we straighten the physical meaning and underlying phenomena behind negative refraction and negative index metamaterials and show that these phenomena are perfectly consistent with causality. It is hoped that this comment draws the attention of authors, reviewers and readers to the large body of rigorous analytical, numerical, and experimental evidence in favor of negative refraction at a single interface, so as to avoid reviving settled debates which mislead, rather than educate, the physics and engineering communities., 4 pages

We propose the use of localized surface plasmon modes excited by square metallic gratings to enhance the optical absorption of thin-film organic solar cells. Broadband absorption enhancement of up to 29% is theoretically demonstrated.

Following our recent interest in metamaterial-based devices supporting resonant tunneling, energy squeezing and supercoupling through narrow waveguide channels and bends, here we analyze the fundamental physical mechanisms behind this phenomenon using a transmission-line model. These theoretical findings extend our theory, allowing us to take fully into account frequency dispersion and losses and revealing the substantial differences between this unique tunneling phenomenon and higher-frequency Fabry-Perot resonances. Moreover, they represent the foundations for other possibilities to realize tunneling through arbitrary waveguide bends, both in E and H planes of polarization, waveguide connections and sharp abruptions and to obtain analogous effects with geometries arguably simpler to realize., 35 pages, 9 figures

We exploit here the dramatic field enhancement caused by energy squeezing and tunneling (i.e., 'supercoupling') in metamaterial-inspired ultranarrow waveguide channels with near zero effective permittivity in order to sense small permittivity variations in a tiny object. The supercoupling effect is accurately modeled analytically and closed form expressions are derived to describe the presence of defects or permittivity perturbations along the channel. We propose a mechanism for optical energy squeezing and anomalous light tunneling through arbitrarily-shaped plasmonic ultranarrow channels and bends connecting two larger plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguides. It is shown how a proper design of sub-wavelength optical channels at cut-off, patterned by plasmonic implants and connecting larger plasmonic waveguides, may allow enhanced resonant transmission, inspired by the anomalous properties of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. The resonant tunneling is shown to be only weakly dependent on the channel length and its specific geometry, such as possible presence of abruptions and bends., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We theoretically and numerically study the design of optical 'lumped' nanofiltering devices in the framework of our recently proposed paradigm for optical nanocircuits. In particular, we present the design of basic filtering elements, such as low-pass, band-pass, stop-band and high-pass 'lumped' nanofilters, for use in optical nanocircuits together with more complex designs, such as multi-zero or multi-pole nanofilters, to work at THz, infrared and optical frequencies. Following the nanocircuit theory, we show how it is possible to design such complex frequency responses by simple rules, similar to RF circuit design, and we compare the frequency response of these optical nanofilters with classic filters in RF circuits. These results may provide a theoretical foundation for fabricating nanofilters in optical lumped nanocircuit devices., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures

Pairing together material slabs with opposite signs for the real parts of their constitutive parameters has been shown to lead to interesting and unconventional properties that are not otherwise observable for single slabs. One such case was demonstrated analytically for the conjugate (i.e., complementary) pairing of infinite planar slabs of epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) media [A. Alu, and N. Engheta, IEEE Trans. Antennas Prop., 51, 2558 (2003)]. There it was shown that when these two slabs are juxtaposed and excited by an incident plane wave, resonance, complete tunneling, total transparency and reconstruction of evanescent waves may occur in the steady-state regime under a monochromatic excitation, even though each of the two slabs by itself is essentially opaque to the incoming radiation. This may lead to virtual imagers with sub-wavelength resolution and other anomalous phenomena overcoming the physical limit of diffraction. Here we explore how a transient sinusoidal signal that starts at t = 0 interacts with such an ENG-MNG pair of finite size using an FDTD technique. Multiple reflections and transmissions at each interface are shown to build up to the eventual steady state response of the pair, and during this process one can observe how the growing exponential phenomenon may actually occur inside this bilayer., 14 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys Rev E

The possibility of using plasmonic covers to drastically reduce the total scattering cross section of spherical and cylindrical objects is discussed. While it is intuitively expected that increasing the physical size of an object may lead to an increase in its overall scattering cross section, here we see how a proper design of these lossless metamaterial covers near their plasma resonance may induce a dramatic drop in the scattering cross section, making the object nearly invisible to an observer, a phenomenon with obvious applications for low observability and non invasive probe design. The presence of wave tunneling and the 'growing evanescent envelope' for field distributions in suitably designed, periodically layered stacks of frequency selective surfaces (FSS) is discussed in this paper. Here it is shown that a setup completely different completely different from the Pendry's lens allows an analogous buildup of evanescently modulated waves. In particular, it is shown how an interface resonance phenomenon similar to the one present at the interface between metamaterials with oppositely signed constitutive parameters may be induced by a proper choice of the periodicities of the FSS stacks and the geometrical properties of these surfaces. The analysis is performed through an equivalent transmission-line approach, and some physical insights into this phenomenon are presented. Epsilon near near-zero (ENZ) materials have been raising significant interest in various research areas. Rich concepts such as photonic doping an d supercoupling featuring ENZ materials have been reported. ENZ materials have been proven to be instrumental to ach ieve embedded eigenstates, or self self-sustained electromagnetic resonances in open structures with momentum compatible with the radiation conti nuum. However, unavoidable absorption in realistic ENZ materials results in a finite lifetime of these modes, and de cay to radiation. Here, we present a strategy to tackle the losses of ENZ materials in order to produce unbounded high high-Q resonances with the use of PT -symmetry and the concept of suppressed leakage. These results pave the way to efficient light trapping an d sensing applications with realistic ENZ materials.

Invisibility has been a tantalizing concept for mankind over several centuries. With recent developments in metamaterial science and nanotechnology, the possibility of cloaking objects to incoming electromagnetic radiation has been escaping the realm of science fiction to become a technological reality. In this article, we review the state-of-the-art in the science of invisibility for electromagnetic waves, and examine the different available technical concepts and experimental investigations, focusing on the underlying physics and the basic scientific concepts. We discuss the available cloaking methods, including transformation optics, plasmonic and mantle cloaking, transmission-line networks, parallel-plate cloaking, anomalous resonance methods, hybrid methods and active schemes, and give our perspective on the subject and its future. We also draw a parallel with cloaking research for acoustic and elastodynamic waves, liquid waves, matter waves and thermal flux, demonstrating how ideas initiated in the field of electromagnetism have been able to open ground breaking venues in a variety of other scientific fields. Finally, applications of cloaking to non-invasive sensing are discussed and reviewed.
