Abstract: We report on variability and correlation studies using multiwavelength observations of the blazar Mrk 421 during the month of 2010 February, when an extraordinary flare reaching a level of ∼27 Crab Units above 1 TeV was measured in very high energy (VHE) γ-rays with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) observatory. This is the highest flux state for Mrk 421 ever observed in VHE γ-rays. Data are analyzed from a coordinated campaign across multiple instruments, including VHE γ-ray (VERITAS, Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov), high-energy γ-ray (Fermi-LAT), X-ray (Swift, Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment, MAXI), optical (including the GASP-WEBT collaboration and polarization data), and radio (Metsahovi, Owens Valley Radio Observatory, University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory). Light curves are produced spanning multiple days before and after the peak of the VHE flare, including over several flare "decline" epochs. The main flare statistics allow 2 minute time bins to be constructed in both the VHE and optical bands enabling a cross-correlation analysis that shows evidence for an optical lag of ∼25-55 minutes, the first time-lagged correlation between these bands reported on such short timescales. Limits on the Doppler factor (δ ⪆ 33) and the size of the emission region (δR≲ 3.8 × 10cm) are obtained from the fast variability observed by VERITAS during the main flare. Analysis of 10 minute binned VHE and X-ray data over the decline epochs shows an extraordinary range of behavior in the flux-flux relationship, from linear to quadratic to lack of correlation to anticorrelation. Taken together, these detailed observations of an unprecedented flare seen in Mrk 421 are difficult to explain with the classic single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model., This research is supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, and NSERC in Canada. The main flare statistics allow 2-minute time bins to be constructed in both the VHE and optical bands enabling a cross-correlation analysis that shows evidence for an optical lag of $\sim$25-55 minutes, the first time-lagged correlation between these bands reported on such short timescales. Limits on the Doppler factor ($\delta \gtrsim 33$) and the size of the emission region ($ \delta^{-1}R_B \lesssim 3.8\times 10^{13}\,\,\mbox{cm}$) are obtained from the fast variability observed by VERITAS during the main flare. Analysis of 10-minute-binned VHE and X-ray data over the decline epochs shows an extraordinary range of behavior in the flux-flux relationship: from linear to quadratic to lack of correlation to anti-correlation. Abstract: We report the results of decade-long (2008-2018) $��$-ray to 1 GHz radio monitoring of the blazar 3C 279, including GASP/WEBT, $\it{Fermi}$ and $\it{Swift}$ data, as well as polarimetric and spectroscopic data. The X-ray and $��$-ray light curves correlate well, with no delay > 3 hours, implying general co-spatiality of the emission regions. The $��$-ray-optical flux-flux relation changes with activity state, ranging from a linear to a more complex dependence. The behaviour of the Stokes parameters at optical and radio wavelengths, including 43 GHz VLBA images, supports either a predominantly helical magnetic field or motion of the radiating plasma along a spiral path. Apparent speeds of emission knots range from 10 to 37c, with the highest values requiring bulk Lorentz factors close to those needed to explain $��$-ray variability on very short time scales. The Mg II emission line flux in the `blue' and `red' wings correlates with the optical synchrotron continuum flux density, possibly providing a variable source of seed photons for inverse Compton scattering. In the radio bands we find progressive delays of the most prominent light curve maxima with decreasing frequency, as expected from the frequency dependence of the $��=1$ surface of synchrotron self-absorption. The global maximum in the 86 GHz light curve becomes less prominent at lower frequencies, while a local maximum, appearing in 2014, strengthens toward decreasing frequencies, becoming pronounced at $\sim5$ GHz. Abstract: We report on variability and correlation studies using multiwavelength observations of the blazar Mrk 421 during the month of 2010 February, when an extraordinary flare reaching a level of ~27 Crab Units above 1 TeV was measured in very high energy (VHE) γ-rays with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) observatory. This is the highest flux state for Mrk 421 ever observed in VHE γ-rays. Data are analyzed from a coordinated campaign across multiple instruments, including VHE γ-ray (VERITAS, Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov), high-energy γ-ray (Fermi-LAT), X-ray (Swift, Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment, MAXI), optical (including the GASP-WEBT collaboration and polarization data), and radio (Metsähovi, Owens Valley Radio Observatory, University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory). Light curves are produced spanning multiple days before and after the peak of the VHE flare, including over several flare “decline“ epochs. Abstract: Using the information provided on the main threats in the ten ecoregions present in the six world regions (Table of threats for Sub-Saharan Africa, South West Pacific, Latin America and Caribbean, North Africa and Near East, North America and Europe; FAOand ITPS, 2015), a summary table of the main threats common to these ecoregions was produced. This exercise showed that the most widespread threat to soil biodiversity in the world was the loss of SOM and SOC, and that this could be associated with other threats such as deforestation and agricultural intensification (both linked withland use change) and with climate change (particularly in tundra). This clearly shows the importance of sustainable management and conservation practices, to maintain this resource in soils, which represents one of the bases for the soils food webs. Deforestation and agricultural intensification were also major threats worldwide, being important intropical and temperate broad leaf and mixed forests and temperate and montane grassland sand boreal forests/taiga, although the level of available information on the topic was highly variable, depending on the particular world regions where these ecoregions occur. The ecoregions with the highest number of threats were the deserts and dry shrublands, the tropical and subtropical grasslands, and the temperate broad leaf and mixed forests. Abstract: Objective: To describe and analyse the factors associated with the use of health services (emergency departments, admissions and primary care) in women survivors of breast cancer diagnosed or treated in four university hospitals of Barcelona (Spain) between 2003 and 2013, within the framework of the Cohort DAMA project. Method: Descriptive design nested in a mixed cohort (Cohort Dama). We obtained sociodemographic information and information on the use of health services through a questionnaire, and on the tumour from the clinical history. Logistic regression models were performed, calculating the odds ratio of the use of health services (emergency departments, hospital admissions and primary care) raw and adjusted (aOR) by diagnostic method, the characteristics of the tumour and of the women and their 95% confidence intervals. Results: The presence of chronic diseases was associated with greater use of the three levels of care. A disadvantaged economic level increases the risk of use of emergency departments and primary care but not of hospital admissions, while a higher tumour stage is associated with a greater risk of admission. By age, those under 50 had a higher risk of using emergency departments and admissions. Conclusions: The factors associated with the use of health services differ according to the level of care (aOR: 3.53 emergency departments, 1.67 admissions, 3.89 primary care) and treatment-derived complications (aOR: 1.35 emergency departments, 1.43 primary care). The presence of chronic disorders, younger age, disadvantaged social class, increases the risk of using services more than the tumour stage and treatment-derived complications. Neither the diagnostic method nor the survival time, nor the use of non-conventional therapies influence this.

8. Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Liver Regeneration in Liver Failure: From Experimental Models to Clinical Trials

Abstract: The liver centralizes the systemic metabolism and thus controls and modulates the functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, the immune system, and the endocrine system. In addition, the liver intervenes between the splanchnic and systemic venous circulation, determining an abdominal portal circulatory system. The liver displays a powerful regenerative potential that rebuilds the parenchyma after an injury. This regenerative mission is mainly carried out by resident liver cells. However, in many cases this regenerative capacity is insufficient and organ failure occurs. In normal livers, if the size of the liver is at least 30% of the original volume, hepatectomy can be performed safely. In cirrhotic livers, the threshold is 50% based on current practice and available data. Typically, portal vein embolization of the part of the liver that is going to be resected is employed to allow liver regeneration in two-stage liver resection after portal vein occlusion (PVO). However, hepatic resection often cannot be performed due to advanced disease progression or because it is not indicated in patients with cirrhosis. In such cases, liver transplantation is the only treatment possibility, and the need for transplantation is the common outcome of progressive liver disease. It is the only effective treatment and has high survival rates of 83% after the first year. However, donated organs are becoming less available, and mortality and the waiting lists have increased, leading to the initiation of living donor liver transplantations. This type of transplant has overall complications of 38%. In order to improve the treatment of hepatic injury, much research has been devoted to stem cells, in particular mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), to promote liver regeneration. In this review, we will focus on the advances made using MSCs in animal models, human patients, ongoing clinical trials, and new strategies using 3D organoids.

Abstract: Objective: To describe and analyse the factors associated with the use of health services (emergency departments, admissions and primary care) in women survivors of breast cancer diagnosed or treated in four university hospitals of Barcelona (Spain) between 2003 and 2013, within the framework of the Cohort DAMA project. Method: Descriptive design nested in a mixed cohort (Cohort Dama). We obtained sociodemographic information and information on the use of health services through a questionnaire, and on the tumour from the clinical history. Logistic regression models were performed, calculating the odds ratio of the use of health services (emergency departments, hospital admissions and primary care) raw and adjusted (aOR) by diagnostic method, the characteristics of the tumour and of the women and their 95% confidence intervals. Results: The presence of chronic diseases was associated with greater use of the three levels of care. A disadvantaged economic level increases the risk of use of emergency departments and primary care but not of hospital admissions, while a higher tumour stage is associated with a greater risk of admission. By age, those under 50 had a higher risk of using emergency departments and admissions. Conclusions: The factors associated with the use of health services differ according to the level of care (aOR: 3.53 emergency departments, 1.67 admissions, 3.89 primary care) and treatment-derived complications (aOR: 1.35 emergency departments, 1.43 primary care). The presence of chronic disorders, younger age, disadvantaged social class, increases the risk of using services more than the tumour stage and treatment-derived complications. Abstract: We present an analysis of the core linear polarization properties of 387 parsec-scale active galactic nuclei (AGNs) jets. Using 15 GHz VLBA data, we revisit the conclusions of the first paper in this series with multiepoch measurements and more detailed analysis of a larger AGN sample that spans a broader range of synchrotron peak frequencies. Each AGN has been observed for at least five epochs between 1996 and 2017. We find that BL Lac objects have core electric vector position angles (EVPAs) that tend toward alignment with the local jet direction; compared to flat spectrum radio quasars, their EVPAs are also less variable over time. The AGN cores that are most fractionally polarized and least variable in polarization have EVPAs that are closely aligned with the local jet direction; they also have low variability in EVPA. These results support the popular model of a standing transverse shock at the base of the jet that collimates the jet magnetic field perpendicular to the jet direction, increasing the fractional polarization and leading to greater polarization stability over time. High-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac objects form a low luminosity, low fractional polarization population. The five narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies in our sample have low fractional polarization and large EVPA-jet misalignments. Although AGNs detected at γ-rays are thought to be more Doppler boosted than nondetected AGNs, we find no significant differences in fractional polarization based on detection by Fermi-LAT; the γ-loud AGNs are, however, more variable in core EVPAs.

Abstract: OJ287 is the best candidate active galactic nucleus (AGN) for hosting a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) at very close separation. We present 120 Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations (at 15 GHz) covering the time between April 1995 and April 2017. We find that the OJ287 radio jet is precessing on a time-scale of ̃22 yr. In addition, our data are consistent with a jet-axis rotation on a yearly time-scale. We model the precession (24 ± 2 yr) and combined motion of jet precession and jet-axis rotation. The jet motion explains the variability of the total radio flux-density via viewing angle changes and Doppler beaming. Half of the jet-precession time-scale is of the order of the dominant optical periodicity time-scale. We suggest that the optical emission is synchrotron emission and related to the jet radiation. The jet dynamics and flux-density light curves can be understood in terms of geometrical effects. Disturbances of an accretion disc caused by a plunging BH do not seem necessary to explain the observed variability. Although the SMBBH model does not seem necessary to explain the observed variability, an SMBBH or Lense-Thirring precession (disc around single BH) seem to be required to explain the time-scale of the precessing motion. Besides jet rotation also nutation of the jet axis could explain the observed motion of the jet axis. We find a strikingly similar scaling for the time-scales for precession and nutation as indicated for SS433 with a factor of roughly 50 times longer in OJ287.

Abstract: We used 15 GHz multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) polarization sensitive observations of 484 sources within a time interval 1996--2016 from the MOJAVE program, and also from the NRAO data archive. We have analyzed the linear polarization characteristics of the compact core features and regions downstream, and their changes along and across the parsec-scale active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets. We detected a significant increase of fractional polarization with distance from the radio core along the jet as well as towards the jet edges. Compared to quasars, BL Lacs have a higher degree of polarization and exhibit more stable electric vector position angles (EVPAs) in their core features and a better alignment of the EVPAs with the local jet direction. The latter is accompanied by a higher degree of linear polarization, suggesting that compact bright jet features might be strong transverse shocks, which enhance magnetic field regularity by compression., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We present 1625 new 15 GHz (2 cm) VLBA images of 295 jets associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the MOJAVE and 2 cm VLBA surveys, spanning observations between 1994 August 31 and 2013 August 20. For 274 AGNs with at least 5 VLBA epochs, we have analyzed the kinematics of 961 individual bright features in their parsec-scale jets. A total of 122 of these jets have not been previously analyzed by the MOJAVE program. In the case of 451 jet features that had at least 10 epochs, we also examined their kinematics for possible accelerations. At least half of the well-sampled features have non-radial and/or accelerating trajectories, indicating that non-ballistic motion is common in AGN jets. Since it is impossible to extrapolate any accelerations that occurred before our monitoring period, we could only determine reliable ejection dates for of those features that had significant proper motions. The distribution of maximum apparent jet speeds in all 295 AGNs measured by our program to date is peaked below, with very few jets with apparent speeds above . The fastest speed in our survey is , measured in the jet of the quasar PKS 0805-07, and is indicative of a maximum jet Lorentz factor of ∼50 in the parent population. An envelope in the maximum jet speed versus redshift distribution of our sample provides additional evidence of this upper limit to the speeds of radio-emitting regions in parsec-scale AGN jets. The Fermi-LAT-detected gamma-ray AGNs in our sample have, on average, higher jet speeds than non-LAT-detected AGNs, indicating a strong correlation between parsec-scale jet speed and the gamma-ray Doppler boosting factor. We have identified 11 moderate-redshift () AGNs with fast apparent speeds () that are strong candidates for future TeV gamma-ray detection. Of the five gamma-ray loud narrow-lined Seyfert I AGNs in our sample, three show highly superluminal jet motions, while the others have sub-luminal speeds. This indicates that some narrow-lined Seyfert I AGNs possess powerful jets with Lorentz factors in excess of 10, and viewing angles less than , consistent with those of typical BL Lac objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars.

Abstract: 3C120 – radio galaxy with an active nucleus has been intensively studied for many years in a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. We used observational data for 1966-2010 years, obtained with the radio telescope at Michigan State University (UMRAO) at frequencies of 14.5, 8 and 4.8 GHz. To study the variability of the radio source, we used wavelet method for time series analysis. The main periods in three frequencies are ~4.5 years and 6-12 years (~0.7, 1.6 and 3.4 years for the short-periodic flux component). The delay between radio frequencies was calculated. The comparison between the change in periods of fluctuations of radio fluxes and dynamics of the jet was performed (image VLBI Mojave, 15.4 GHz). Based on the periods found, we conducted forecasting changes in the radio flux and compared the results with the observation data.

Abstract: We investigated chosen epidermal proteoglycans in different culture models to explore their expression by keratinocytes at various states of differentiation. Fully defined conditions of our epidermal reconstructions allowed for evaluation of the proteoglycans in "normal" or "ageing"-like epidermal tissues in vitro. The "ageing"-like epidermis was characterized by the viable layers' atrophy, low proliferation rate and premature keratinisation. Expression of all studied proteoglycan genes could be detected with quantitative real-time PCR but the syndecan-4 protein wasn't observed in the reconstructed epidermis using immunohistochemistry. Treatment with all-trans retinoic acid resulted in epithelial acantho- sis, combined with up-regulation of proteoglycans in the "ageing"-like culture conditions. In "normal" reconstructed epi- dermis, retinoids increased the syndecan-4 gene expression but down-regulated that of syndecan-1. The observed complex changes are compatible with the presumed but still poorly understood roles of various proteoglycans in epidermal differ- entiation. Our defined culture models are suitable for screening of pharmacological agents modulating epidermal proteo- glycan expression.

The nine Planck frequencies, from 30 to 857 GHz, are complemented by a set of simultaneous ground-based radio observations between 1.1 and 37 GHz. The single-survey Planck data confirm that the flattest high-frequency radio spectral indices are close to zero, indicating that the original accelerated electron energy spectrum is much harder than commonly thought, with power-law index around 1.5 instead of the canonical 2.5. The radio spectra peak at high frequencies and exhibit a variety of shapes. For a small set of low-z sources, we find a spectral upturn at high frequencies, indicating the presence of intrinsic cold dust. Variability can generally be approximated by achromatic variations, while sources with clear signatures of evolving shocks appear to be limited to the strongest outbursts.

Abstract: La aparición de lesiones vesiculosas en genitales en las consultas de Pediatría en Atención Primaria (AP) no es un motivo frecuente de consulta. Por eso debemos estar muy atentos a la hora de detectar dichos casos y ser muy cautos en el trato con el adulto o tutor que ha traído el caso a la consulta para que pueda ser valorado y estudiado convenientemente, con la finalidad de determinar si ha habido abuso sexual y de dar el mejor trato al niño y causarle los menores daños posibles. Se presenta un caso en el que se sospecha abuso sexual en la consulta y se deriva para su confirmación en el medio hospitalario. Se revisan las publicaciones sobre abusos sexuales en los niños. The presence of blisters around the genitals is not a usual reason to medical consultation in primary care Paediatrics. Therefore we must really pay attention to detecting those cases and we must be very careful dealing with the adult or legal tutor who brought the case to have it properly studied, in order to establish whether there has been sexual abuse and give the child the best possible treatment causing the least possible damages. A case where there was sexual abuse suspicion in primary care is presented; it was referred to hospital for confirmation. Publications about sexual abuse in children were revised.

Abstract: To interact effectively with the environment the brain integrates signals from multiple senses. It is currently unclear to what extent spatial information can be integrated across different senses in the absence of awareness. Combining dynamic continuous flash suppression (CFS) and spatial audiovisual stimulation, the current study investigated whether a sound facilitates a concurrent visual flash to elude flash suppression and enter perceptual awareness depending on audiovisual spatial congruency. Our results demonstrate that a concurrent sound boosts unaware visual signals into perceptual awareness. Critically, this process depended on the spatial congruency of the auditory and visual signals pointing towards low level mechanisms of audiovisual integration. Moreover, the concurrent sound biased the reported location of the flash as a function of flash visibility. The spatial bias of sounds on reported flash location was strongest for flashes that were judged invisible. Our results suggest that multisensory integration is a critical mechanism that enables signals to enter conscious perception.

25. The Extreme Gamma-Ray Blazar S5 0716+714: Jet Conditions from Radio-Band Variability and Radiative Transfer Modeling

Abstract: As part of a program to identify the physical conditions in the jets of gamma-ray-flaring blazars detected by Fermi, including the role of shocks in the production of high-energy flaring, we obtained 4 years of 3-frequency, centimeter-band total flux density and linear polarization monitoring observations of the radio-bright blazar S5 0716+714 with the University of Michigan 26-m paraboloid. Light curves constructed from these data exhibit a series of rapid, high-amplitude, centimeter-band total flux density outbursts, and changes in the linear polarization consistent with the passage of shocks during the gamma-ray flaring. The observed spectral evolution of the radio-band flares, in combination with radiative transfer simulations incorporating propagating shocks, was used to constrain the shock and jet flow conditions in the parsec-scale regions of the jet. Eight forward-moving, transverse shocks with unusually-strong shock compression factors, a very fast Lorentz factor of the shocks of 77, a bulk Lorentz factor of the flow of 20, a viewing angle of 12 degrees, and an intrinsic opening angle of the radio jet of 5.2 degrees were identified., 2014 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C14102.1

Abstract: In April-May 2003, the blazar 1ES 1959+650 showed an increased level of X-ray activity. This prompted a multiwavelength observation campaign with the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, the Bordeaux Optical Observatory, and the University of Michigan Radio Astrophysical Observatory. We present the multiwavelength data taken from May 2, 2003 to June 7, 2003 and compare the source characteristics with those measured during observations taken during the years 2000 and 2002. The X-ray observations gave a data set with high signal-to-noise light curves and energy spectra; however, the gamma-ray observations did not reveal a major TeV gamma-ray flare. Furthermore, we find that the radio and optical fluxes do not show statistically significant deviations from those measured during the 2002 flaring periods. While the X-ray flux and X-ray photon index appear correlated during subsequent observations, the apparent correlation evolved significantly between the years 2000, 2002, and 2003. We discuss the implications of this finding for the mechanism that causes the flaring activity.

Abstract: We present centimeter-band total flux density and linear polarization light curves illustrating the signature of shocks during radio band outbursts associated in time with gamma-ray flares detected by the Fermi LAT. The general characteristics of the spectral evolution during these events is well-explained by new radiative transfer simulations incorporating propagating oblique shocks and assuming an initially turbulent magnetic field. This finding supports the idea that oblique shocks in the jet are a viable explanation for activity from the radio to the gamma-ray band in at least some gamma-ray flares., Comment: to appear in 2011 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C110509

Abstract: By data of the long-term monitoring (30- 40 years) fluxes of extragalactic radio sources 3C120, CTA102, DA55 and OJ287 received on the RT-26, University of Michigan present results of data processing with use the wavelet analysis. Received analysis of trend and short-time components of the flux density changes in the studied frequencies 14.5, 8 and 4.8 GHz. For each time components on all frequencies found values of main periods and time of their existence, integrated power spectra for the phases activity for radio sources was built. From the results of VLBI observations in sources with long jets (3C120 and CTA102) detected quasi-periodic structures brighter components. Their appearance is linked to the dynamics of the interaction of shock waves in the jet emission from the cores. Quasi-periodic structures in the jet can be formed as a result of a return standing wave.

Abstract: © ESO, 2015. Context. We extensively observed the prototype blazar, BL Lacertae, in optical and radio bands during an active phase in the period 2010-2013 when the source showed several prominent outbursts. We searched for possible correlations and time lags between the optical and radio band flux variations using multi-frequency data to learn about the mechanisms producing variability. Aims. During an active phase of BL Lacertae, we searched for possible correlations and time lags between multi-frequency light curves of several optical and radio bands. We tried to estimate any possible variability timescales and inter-band lags in these bands. Methods. We performed optical observations in B, V, R, and I-bands from seven telescopes in Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, and India and obtained radio data at 36.8, 22.2, 14.5, 8, and 4.8 GHz frequencies from three telescopes in Crimea, Finland, and USA. Results. Significant cross-correlations between optical and radio bands are found in our observations with a delay of cm-fluxes with respect to optical bands of ∼250 days. The optical and radio light curves do not show any significant timescales of variability. BL Lacertae showed many optical "mini-flares" on short timescales. Variations on longer term timescales are mildly chromatic with the superposition of many strong optical outbursts. In radio bands, the amplitude of variability is frequency dependent. Flux variations at higher radio frequencies lead the lower frequencies by days or weeks. Conclusions. The optical variations are consistent with being dominated by a geometric scenario where a region of emitting plasma moves along a helical path in a relativistic jet. The frequency dependence of the variability amplitude supports an origin of the observed variations intrinsic to the source.

Abstract: Context. 2251+158 (3C 454.3) is a well-studied quasar with rather unusual properties. It is among the most variable and brightest gamma-ray emitting active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the sky observed by Fermi. The multi-wavelength flux density emission of this source is peculiar, and so is the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) structure. While it is usually assumed that the jet and jet-components in a given AGN show more or less the same properties (e.g., apparent velocities and paths) with time, we demonstrate here that unusual morphologies (arc-like structure) can occur as temporal phenomena. We also show that the kinematic properties of jet components change from slow to fast apparent motion. Aims. We present the detection of an arc around the core region. To understand the physical nature of this and other peculiar kinematic properties of the parsec-scale jet of 2251+158 we performed detailed radio-interferometric studies of this prototypical AGN. Methods. We (re-)analyzed 32 Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations covering 16 years in time (between 1995.57 and 2011.48), observed at 15 GHz from the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE/2 cm) survey and derived the parameters of the observed VLBI structure. Three 43 GHz VLBA observations from 2001.22, 2005.38, and 2005.76 have been reprocessed. We fitted the components of the VLBI structure with Gaussian components. We studied the properties of light-curves obtained in the radio (4.8, 8.0, and 14.5 GHz) and optical regime (R-band), and studied the correlations between the flaring properties and the VLBI structure of the source. Results. We report the detection of an arc-like structure around the core of an AGN. This ring-structure becomes visible in VLBI maps around 1996. It expands with an apparent proper motion between 0.12 ± 0.01 mas yr-1 and 0.19 ± 0.01 mas yr-1 (corresponding to 5.4 ± 0.3c to 9.0 ± 0.4c) and dominates the parsec-scale structure for about 14 years. In addition, we report a significant change in the kinematic properties of jet components close to the core. A phase of slow apparent radial motion (directed away from the core) of two inner jet components (A and B) and no component ejection after a major radio-flare in 1995 is atypical for AGN. This phase is followed by a more typical behaviour in which the same components separate with higher apparent speeds from the core and two new components appear to be ejected from the central region. Conclusions. We observe significant changes in the morphological and kinematic properties of the parsec-scale jet. Taken together, it is tempting to see a causal connection between the different phenomena. We briefly suggest and discuss several possible physical scenarios to explain the observed phenomena. The kinematic changes as well as the changes in the flaring characteristics could be explained geometrically because of a change in the angle to the line of sight towards the observer assuming a helical structure of the jet. Another possible explanation for the observed phenomena and the correlations among them could be a precessing jet (precession period on timescale of 14.5 years) in combination with its interaction with an external inhomogeneous medium surrounding the core. These and other possible explanations will be investigated further and manuscripts presenting the results are in preparation. © 2013 ESO.

Abstract: We describe the parsec-scale kinematics of 200 AGN jets based on 15 GHz VLBA data obtained between 1994 Aug 31 and 2011 May 1. We present new VLBA 15 GHz images of these and 59 additional AGN from the MOJAVE and 2 cm Survey programs. Nearly all of the 60 most heavily observed jets show significant changes in their innermost position angle over a 12 to 16 year interval, ranging from 10 deg to 150 deg on the sky, corresponding to intrinsic variations of ~0.5 deg to ~2 deg. The BL Lac jets show smaller variations than quasars. Roughly half of the heavily observed jets show systematic position angle trends with time, and 20 show indications of oscillatory behavior. The time spans of the data sets are too short compared to the fitted periods (5 to 12 y), however, to reliably establish periodicity. The rapid changes and large jumps in position angle seen in many cases suggest that the superluminal AGN jet features occupy only a portion of the entire jet cross section, and may be energized portions of thin instability structures within the jet. We have derived vector proper motions for 887 moving features in 200 jets having at least five VLBA epochs. For 557 well-sampled features, there are sufficient data to additionally study possible accelerations. We find that the moving features are generally non-ballistic, with 70% of the well-sampled features showing either significant accelerations or non-radial motions. Abstract: Producción Científica, Introducción: El objetivo de nuestro estudio fue evaluar en pacientes obesos con osteoartritis crónica el impacto sobre la calidad de vida y el control metabólico de una intervención dietética con una formula comercial hipocalórica. Material y métodos: Se evaluó una muestra de 55 pacientes obesos con osteoartritis crónica. EL estudió consistió en un programa de 12 semanas de reducción de peso en el que los paciente recibían al día dos envases de Optisource Plus®. Resultados: Se dividieron a los pacientes en dos grupos, uno que perdió menos de un 9% (grupo 1) y el grupo 2 (más de 9% de pérdida de peso). Los pacientes en el grupo 2 mostraron una mejoria en la puntuacion total del test de calidad de vida SF-36 (4,0 ± 6,1 puntos), en el campo de la función física del SF 36 (1,8 ± 3,4 puntos), el en campo del componente físico del SF 36 (0,6 ± 1,6 puntos) y en el campo de la vitalidad del SF 36 (2,7 ± 4,6 puntos). También mejoraron de manera significativa, la puntuación total del test específico de calidad de vida para osteoartritis WOMAC (-8,2 ± 15,0 puntos), el dominio funcional del test WOMAC (- 6.5+/-10.6 puntos) y el dominio de la rigidez del test WOMAC (-0,7 ± 2,1 puntos). Conclusión: El efecto sobre la calidad de vida fue superior en el grupo con porcentaje de pérdida de peso > 9% con la formula hipocalórica comercial.

43. Convergent tracer tests in multilayered aquifers: the importance of vertical flow in the injection borehole

Abstract: International audience; A mathematical model describing the steady state flows in a forced gradient tracer test between an injection and pumping borehole in a multilayered sandstone aquifer has been developed that includes the effect of vertically variable background heads. A second model describing the recovery of tracer from a layer in which there are discharges due to vertical flow in the injection borehole is also presented. Application of the models to field tracer test data indicates that the observed recoveries, which are not proportional to the abstraction rate in each layer, are consistent with the hydraulic behavior of the aquifer when natural vertical head gradients are taken into account. Investigation with the models illustrates that the vertical distribution of tracer recovery depends strongly upon the background heads and that tracer tests conducted in the same aquifer, but at different times, may interrogate different aquifer layers. It is also shown generally that for a given abstraction rate the vertical distribution of tracer recovery in small-scale tracer tests is controlled largely by the transmissivity distribution but that as the spatial scale of the test increases, the distribution of recovery becomes proportional to the discharges from the injection borehole because of vertical flows within it, which may be natural or induced by pumping in the monitoring borehole. Uncertainties inherent in the design of forced gradient tracer tests in multilayered aquifers and the problems of applying the results of such tests to natural gradient contaminant migration are discussed.

Abstract: We report on the gamma-ray activity of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) during the first 1.5 years of Fermi operation, from 2008 August 5 to 2010 March 12. We find that the Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray spectrum above 0.3 GeV can be well described by a power-law function with photon index Gamma = 1.78 +/- 0.02 and average photon flux F(>0.3 GeV) = (7.23 +/- 0.16) x 10(-8) ph cm(-2) s(-1). Over this time period, the Fermi-LAT spectrum above 0.3 GeV was evaluated on seven-day-long time intervals, showing significant variations in the photon flux (up to a factor similar to 3 from the minimum to the maximum flux) but mild spectral variations. The variability amplitude at X-ray frequencies measured by RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT is substantially larger than that in gamma-rays measured by Fermi-LAT, and these two energy ranges are not significantly correlated. We also present the first results from the 4.5 month long multifrequency campaign on Mrk 421, which included the VLBA, Swift, RXTE, MAGIC, the F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, and other collaborations and instruments that provided excellent temporal and energy coverage of the source throughout the entire campaign (2009 January 19 to 2009 June 1). During this campaign, Mrk 421 showed a low activity at all wavebands. The extensive multi-instrument (radio to TeV) data set provides an unprecedented, complete look at the quiescent spectral energy distribution (SED) for this source. The broadband SED was reproduced with a leptonic (one-zone synchrotron self-Compton) and a hadronic model (synchrotron proton blazar). Both frameworks are able to describe the average SED reasonably well, implying comparable jet powers but very different characteristics for the blazar emission site.

Abstract: We discuss the opacity in the core regions of active galactic nuclei observed with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), and describe a new method for deriving the frequency-dependent shifts of the VLBI core from the frequency-dependent time lags of flares observed with single-dish observations. Application of the method to the core shifts of the quasar 3C 345 shows a very good agreement between the core shifts directly measured from VLBI observations and derived from flares in the total flux density using the proposed method. The frequency-dependent time lags of flares can be used to derive physical parameters of the jets, such as distance from the VLBI core to the base of the jet and the magnetic fields in the core region. Our estimates for 3C 345 indicate core magnetic fields ~0.1 G and magnetic field at 1 pc ~0.4 G., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We are constructing the broadband SED catalog of the MOJAVE sample from the radio to the gamma-ray band using MOJAVE, Swift UVOT/XRT/BAT, and Fermi/LAT data, in order to understand the emission mechanism of extragalactic outflows and to investigate the site of high-energy emission in AGN. Since the launch of Fermi gamma-ray Space Telescope in August 2008, two thirds of the MOJAVE sources have been detected by Fermi/LAT. Combining the results of high-resolution VLBI, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of the jet-dominated AGN sample, we want to pin down the origin of high-energy emission in relativistic jets. Abstract: Context. We present evidence that parsec-scale jets in BL Lac objects may be significantly distinct in kinematics from their counterparts in quasars. We argued this previously for the BL lac sources 1803+784 and 0716+714, report here a similar pattern for another well-known BL Lac object, PKS 0735+178, whose nuclear jet is found to exhibit kinematics atypical of quasars. Aims. A detailed study of the jet components' motion reveals that the standard AGN paradigm of apparent superluminal motion does not always describe the kinematics in BL Lac objects. We study 0735+178 here to augment and improve the understanding of the peculiar motions in the jets of BL Lac objects as a class. Methods. We analyzed 15 GHz VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) observations (2cm/MOJAVE survey) performed at 23 epochs between 1995.27 and 2008.91. Results. We found a drastic structural mode change in the VLBI jet of 0735+178, between 2000.4 and 2001.8 when its twice sharply bent trajectory turned into a linear shape.We further found that this jet had undergone a similar transition sometime between December 1981 and June 1983. A mode change, occurring in the reverse direction (between mid-1992 and mid-1995) has already been reported in the literature. These structural mode changes are found to be reflected in changed kinematical behavior of the nuclear jet, manifested as an apparent superluminal motion and stationarity of the radio knots. In addition, we found the individual mode changes to correlate in time with the maxima in the optical light curve. The last two transitions occurred before a (modest) radio flare. The behavior of this pc-scale jet appears to favor a scenario involving non-ballistic motions of the radio knots, produced by the precession of a continuous jet within the ambient medium., Accepted for publication in A&A (Abstract reduced for astro-ph)

Abstract: The GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) monitored BL Lacertae in 2008-2009 at radio, near-IR, and optical frequencies. During this period, high-energy observations were performed by XMM-Newton, Swift, and Fermi. We analyse these data with particular attention to the calibration of Swift UV data, and apply a helical jet model to interpret the source broad-band variability. The GASP-WEBT observations show an optical flare in 2008 February-March, and oscillations of several tenths of mag on a few-day time scale afterwards. The radio flux is only mildly variable. The UV data from both XMM-Newton and Swift seem to confirm a UV excess that is likely caused by thermal emission from the accretion disc. The X-ray data from XMM-Newton indicate a strongly concave spectrum, as well as moderate flux variability on an hour time scale. The Swift X-ray data reveal fast (interday) flux changes, not correlated with those observed at lower energies. We compare the spectral energy distribution (SED) corresponding to the 2008 low-brightness state, which was characterised by a synchrotron dominance, to the 1997 outburst state, where the inverse-Compton emission was prevailing. A fit with an inhomogeneous helical jet model suggests that two synchrotron components are at work with their self inverse-Compton emission. Most likely, they represent the radiation from two distinct emitting regions in the jet. We show that the difference between the source SEDs in 2008 and 1997 can be explained in terms of pure geometrical variations. The outburst state occurred when the jet-emitting regions were better aligned with the line of sight, producing an increase of the Doppler beaming factor.
