1. 'Peace for our Time': a Uchronian Approach to British Fascism in Jo Walton’s 'Farthing'

Abstract

This paper draws on a uchronian framework to analyse Jo Walton’s Farthing (2006) as a suitable example of a counterfactual Britain in the aftermath of an effective peace agreement with Nazi Germany. The following pages will attempt to intertwine the purely historical comment on the intricacies that underlay the rise of fascism in the country with the allohistorical turns that ignite the plot of the novel and its point of divergence, which brings about the appointment of a fascist militant as Prime Minister and the outburst of a violent antisemitic wave. The study of this novel will be informed by a wide array of critics and historians like Amy Ramson, Karen Hellekson, Richard Thurlow or Nigel Copsey, among others, whose work contributes to tracing significant parallelisms between the historical outcome and the uchronian alternatives Walton explores in her work

Abstract

El presente trabajo aborda el estudio arqueométrico y arqueológico de un pequeño fragmento de escultura monumental romana procedente del asentamiento urbano de El Forau de la Tuta (Artieda, Zaragoza, España). Dicha pieza, fabricada en mármol de Luni-Carrara, representa una mano izquierda con pátera umbilicata que formaría parte de una estatua de gran formato datable entre la segunda mitad del siglo I y comienzos del II procedente de un edificio público, un templo posiblemente, ubicado en el foro de la ciudad. A partir de los paralelos iconográficos conservados, pensamos que esta estatua podría haberse tratado de una imagen de culto imperial, hipotéticamente un Lar Augusti o un Genius Augusti.

En el presente trabajo, tras aproximarnos al origen, causas y principales consecuencias del problema de la despoblación de las zonas rurales en nuestro país, analizamos, en un primer momento, las principales políticas adoptadas (tanto a nivel nacional como europeo) frente al reto demográfico—prestando especial atención a las arbitradas en materia de gasto público— para, a continuación, estudiar las actuales tendencias de discriminación fiscal positiva aplicadas en esta materia en los diversos niveles de nuestra Administración territorial y su conveniencia, así como la problemática del encaje de estas medidas tributarias en el Derecho comunitario, especialmente a la luz del marco jurídico de las ayudas de Estado.

5. Chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) present in the territorial waters of Venezuela, Southeast Caribbean: a general review and update of their knowledge

Abstract

Introduction: It is currently accepted that the marine malaco-faunistic biodiversity of Chitons (Polyplacophora) occurring in the general environment of the tropical watershed of the Caribbean is composed of a total of 53 native species of these singular benthic molluscs, taxonomically included in 2 Orders, 8 Families and 18 genera. Objective: Updated general review of the inventory of polyplacophorous molluscs occurring in the marine territory of Venezuela, tropical southeastern portion of the Caribbean. Methodology: Unprecedented systematic organization of a reference database comprising total regional knowledge chronologically produced around the theme over a period of 122 years (1900 - 2022). Results and Conclusions: Confirmed and recorded regional total of 23 chiton species (43% of the previously recognized for the Caribbean), including 22 forms of shallow coastal waters and one (1) deep water, recorded for 16 geographic localities (10 island, 5 continental and 1 deep water in continental shelf), all verified through the global platform "MolluscaBase", taxonomically included in 2 Orders, 7 Families and 13 Genus, including additional information about their known biogeographical distribution in the country's territorial space.

The observed degree of linear polarization of ~10% is far below theoretical expectations for this object, and stays low throughout the spin cycle of the pulsar. Both the degree and angle of polarization exhibit variability with the pulse phase, allowing us to measure the pulsar spin position angle 57(2) deg and the magnetic obliquity 12(4) deg, which is an essential step towards detailed modelling of the intrinsic emission of X-ray pulsars. Combining our results with the optical polarimetric data, we find that the spin axis of the neutron star and the angular momentum of the binary orbit are misaligned by at least ~20 deg, which is a strong argument in support of the models explaining the stability of the observed superorbital variability with the precession of the neutron star. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., This Article is based on observations made by IXPE, a joint US and Italian mission. Although the jets are known to be ultimately powered by a supermassive black hole, how the particles are accelerated to such high energies has been an unanswered question. The process must be related to the magnetic field, which can be probed by observations of the polarization of light from the jets. Measurements of the radio to optical polarization—the only range available until now—probe extended regions of the jet containing particles that left the acceleration site days to years earlier1,2,3, and hence do not directly explore the acceleration mechanism, as could X-ray measurements. Here we report the detection of X-ray polarization from the blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501). We measure an X-ray linear polarization degree ΠX of around 10%, which is a factor of around 2 higher than the value at optical wavelengths, with a polarization angle parallel to the radio jet. This points to a shock front as the source of particle acceleration and also implies that the plasma becomes increasingly turbulent with distance from the shock. © The Author(s) 2022., I.L. was supported by the JSPS postdoctoral short-term fellowship programme. Abstract

We live in a society in which knowing how to manage money is a necessity, since it is required in our everyday life. In this context, financial literacy is a competence which people should develop in order to improve their money-related decisions. In order to analyse the contribution of financial education to this competence, we go beyond the previous literature in respect to correlation by using student fixed-effects and PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2018 data for 15-year-old students in 20 countries. Our results show that, in most of the countries under analysis, the financial education that students receive in the subject of mathematics may contribute to the development of their financial literacy competences. Nevertheless, the lack of an effective subject in economics is still an issue in most of the educational systems under analysis. (JEL codes: I20, I21, I28, and C10)

12. CLIL realities through the lens of English and content teachers

Abstract

This research investigated six established areas for quality (Ortega-Martín et al., 2018) in the implementation of CLIL programmes in a Spanish monolingual autonomous community from the perspective of its teachers, in particular focusing on possible differences of opinion between content and English language teachers, an understudied area. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 36 teachers at four secondary schools in urban Extremadura so as to assess the perceptions of the execution and the effectiveness of current CLIL education programmes, identifying specifically their potential challenges. Significant differences between content teachers and English teachers’ perceptions in six areas under study are examined, from programme management to academic results. Data results indicate that although programmes are viewed quite positively by both groups of teachers, some important areas of difference exist, including the amount of time the L2 is used in a content class and the language skills that are worked in a CLIL environment. To address this gap, suggestions are made to establish more widely accepted standards for CLIL programme objectives.

Abstract

International audience; Bistable molecules represent a potential miniaturization limit for high-density information technologies. However, molecules exhibit memory effect typically at very low temperatures. This is the case of spin-crossover (SCO) complexes, where the concept of a molecular memory has not been considered due to the fast spin-state interconversion of all previous systems. Breaking this principle, here we report a slow relaxation process found in an SCO iron-triazole polyanionic complex. Multiple experimental evidences confirm the opening of a thermal hysteresis upon solid dilution and even in liquid solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the origin of this unexpected phenomenon to the appearance of an energy barrier that slows down the spin-state relaxation processes at the molecular level. These results show how SCO molecules may store information at room temperature, opening unique opportunities for molecular data storage.

17. Mortalidade pelo infarto agudo do miocárdio no Brasil: 1996- 2017

Abstract

Objetivo: Analisar a mortalidade pelo infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM) no Brasil nos anos de 1996 a 2017. Método: Estudo epidemiológico, exploratório, descritivo e quantitativo. Os dados foram extraídos junto ao Serviço de Informação sobre Mortalidade (SIM) do Ministério da Saúde (MS). Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva. Resultados: Foi identificado o universo de 1.592.197 registros, com média e desvio padrão de (72.373±12.999,9). O ano de 2016 registrou a maior preponderância com 5,9% (n=94.148) e 1996 a menor com 3,5% (n=55.900). A maior preponderância se constituiu de 59,1% (n=940.552) pessoas do sexo masculino, 25,6% (n=407.340) possuíam entre 70 a 79 anos, 54,7% (n=871.319) possuíam cor/raça branca, 45,5% (n=725.234) eram casados, 20,7% (n=328.981) possuíam de 1 a 3 anos de escolarização, 55,6% (n=885.368) tiveram o registro de óbito no hospital. Conclusão: Foi identificado aumento na frequência de registros de óbito por IAM no recorte geográfico e histórico analisados. 19. An experimental study of the role of ions at modulating the early stages of calcium carbonate formation

Abstract

In the last decades numerous studies have shown that most calcifying organisms build their shells and skeletons via non-classical crystallization processes, including the formation of transient, metastable amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as a precursor phase. Although a significant progress has been achieved at understanding CaCO3 growth via amorphous precursors, there are still aspects that remain unexplored. Knowledge of the role of different elements that are commonly co-precipitated with carbonates at modulating the early stages of calcium carbonate formation and the amorphous to crystalline transition is needed to constrain biomineralisation processes and to allow the understanding of how sensitive calcification is to past, current, and future environmental change. In order to address this issue, we investigated the incorporation of boron and magnesium into ACC precipitated under different pHs. This study evaluates the influence of B and Mg on the stability and water content of ACC and its formation mechanism. This information, together with an analysis of the B and Mg content of ACC formed at different pH conditions, provide insights into the factors controlling the chemical signatures and properties of the carbonate polymorphs formed via the ACC pathway.

Abstract

8 pág., West Nile virus (WNV) is a re-emergent mosquito-borne RNA virus that causes major outbreaks of encephalitis around the world. However, there is no therapeutic treatment to struggle against WNV, and the current treatment relies on alleviating symptoms. Therefore, due to the threat virus poses to animal and human health, there is an urgent need to come up with fast strategies to identify and assess effective antiviral compounds. A relevant target when developing drugs against RNA viruses is the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), responsible for the replication of the viral genome within a host cell. RdRps are key therapeutic targets based on their specificity for RNA and their essential role in the propagation of the infection. We have developed a fluorescence-based method to measure WNV RdRp activity in a fast and reliable real-time way. Interestingly, rilpivirine has shown in our assay inhibition of the WNV RdRp activity with an IC50 value of 3.3 μM and its antiviral activity was confirmed in cell cultures. Furthermore, this method has been extended to build up a high-throughput screening platform to identify WNV polymerase inhibitors. By screening a small chemical library, novel RdRp inhibitors 1-4 have been identified. When their antiviral activity was tested against WNV in cell culture, 4 exhibited an EC50 value of 2.5 μM and a selective index of 12.3. Thus, rilpivirine shows up as an interesting candidate for repurposing against flavivirus. 21. Enhanced diffusion of tracer particles in non-reciprocal mixtures

Abstract

We study the diffusivity of a tagged particle in a binary mixture of Brownian particles with non-reciprocal interactions. Numerical simulations reveal that, for a broad class of interaction potentials, non-reciprocity can significantly increase the effective diffusion coefficient of tracer particles, and that this diffusion enhancement is associated with a breakdown of the Einstein relation. These observations are quantified and confirmed via two different and complementary analytical approaches: (i) a linearized stochastic density field theory, which is particularly accurate in the limit of soft interactions; (ii) a reduced two-body description, which is exact at leading order in the density of particles. The latter reveals that diffusion enhancement can be attributed to the formation of transiently propelled dimers of particles, whose cohesion and speed are controlled by the non-reciprocal interactions.

Abstract

CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. Abstract

[Background] Rusts and powdery mildews are severe fungal diseases of major crops worldwide, including cereals and legumes. They can be managed by chemical fungicide treatments, with negative consequences as environmental pollution and risk for human and animal health. Bioactive natural products could be the safest alternative for pest control. The family of anthraquinones, as well as analogue compounds containing an anthraquinone moiety or some modified anthraquinone rings, has been reported to exhibit certain antibiotic activity. Thus, the potential antifungal activity of some anthraquinones isolated from Ascochyta lentis, was assayed in this study for their effectiveness to reduce rust and powdery mildew diseases on pea and oat. Their effect on fungal development was macro- and microscopically assessed on inoculated leaves, and compared to the control achieved by the chemical fungicide (Tetraconazol 12.5% and Azoxystrobin 25%). In addition, the most promising compound was also tested at different concentrations in inoculated whole plants in order to evaluate its preventive and curative potential against fungal infection., [Results] All metabolites studied strongly reduced the development of rust and powdery mildews in both pea and oat, being pachybasin and lentiquinone C the most effective ones in hampering fungal spore germination and appressoria formation. Some of them also affected post-penetration events reducing colony size and number of haustoria per colony. Results were confirmed for pachybasin in whole plants assays, showing an efficacy similar to the commercial fungicide to control fungal diseases, both in preventive and curative applications. [Conclusions] Some fungal anthraquinones and close metabolites, especially pachybasin, could be very promising molecules with effective potential as antifungal agents against both rust and powdery mildew of both pea and oat. El uso de redes sociales como Youtube es cada vez más usual, puede favorecer el aprendizaje colaborativo y las competencias de comunicación. Es por ello que el objetivo de investigación se centró en conocer la opinión del estudiantado universitario sobre los resultados de su incorporación en el aula. Se partió de una muestra de 97 estudiantes de dos titulaciones de Grado con los que se realizó un estudio de tipo mixto descriptivo. Los resultados muestran que el estudiantado está a favor del uso de esta red social y opinan que facilita la comprensión de contenidos de las materias.

Abstract

Introduction: Since of the year 2014, the “AM Project” (Brazil) has been carrying out taxonomic, bioecological and conservationist research on "non-marine molluscs" present in the environment of the Caribbean continental territory of the Sucre State and adjacent areas, Northeast region of Venezuela , with special emphasis on its terrestrial and arboreal forest species (Agudo-Padrón 2021), a geographic region historically little studied in this aspect of its natural history, involving today a general preliminary total of 67 verified forms/ species (44 land/ terrestrial and 23 limnic/ freshwater), included in 49 genera and 28 families. Objective: Substantial update of this knowledge, with the incorporation of new species to the regional inventory. Methodology: Updated review of cryptic regional malacological bibliography and taxonomic examination & determination of specimens (vouchers) deposited in malacological collection of scientific museum. Results and conclusions: Incorporation of three (3) land/ terrestrial gastropod (forest snail) species into the previously established regional inventory, taxonomically grouped all into 1 genera and 1 family, bringing to 47 its your number of regionally land known forms.

28. The relationship between mobile broadband usage and user mobility with lockdown restrictions in Spain

Abstract

This paper studies how COVID-19 lockdown restrictions encouraged and allowed people to form habits of increased mobile phone usage in Spain, even after the most restrictive measures were lifted. We have used data from the mobile network of a national telecommunications operator to study the influence of 15 different mobility restrictions on citizens’ use of mobile phones from 15 March 2020 to 15 April 2021 in a big Spanish city. In order to approach this issue, a quasi-experimental technique (before and after methodology) was implemented. We found that the use of smartphones presented an initial reduction with the first and most drastic mobility restrictions, but showed a growing use after their removal. However, user mobility was negatively influenced by all the mobility restrictions.

Abstract

With the invaluable participatory assistance and support of local researchers and collaborating informants in field, accompanied for the fundamental revision of the regional bibliography, once again through the AM Project (Brazil) it was possible to achieve the incorporation of new informations for the inventory in progress about the current non-marine land and freshwater molluscs present in the Central American territory of El Salvador Republic, including five (5) new gastropod species not previously reported, being four (4) pulmonate land/ terrestrial forest and one (1) operculate limnic/ freshwater, bringing the number of confirmed inventoried forms to 35. Additionally, the record of another two (2) terrestrial forest species previously registered for the territory is still presented, reinforcing the confirmation of its valid presence/ occurrence in the region.

Abstract

Introduction: Biological invasions, from molluscs among others, have been recognized as one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in the world, and when non-native species invade, they can modify the structure of the community and the functioning of ecosystems, in addition to representing a serious socio-economic threat. Objective: Updated general review of the inventory of invasive exotic molluscs occurring in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina/ SC. Methodology: An unprecedented organization of a reference database comprising the total knowledge generated around the topic in just over two decades of systematic regional research. Results and conclusions: Regional total confirmed and registered of 31 taxa/ species of invasive exotic molluscs (five (5) Bivalvia marihnos & 26 continental forms: nine (9) freshwater – five (5) Gastropoda & four (4) Bivalvia – as well as 17 terrestrial/ terrestrial Gastropoda), all verified through the global platform "MolluscaBase", taxonomically included in 29 genera (22 Gastropoda & 7 Bivalvia) and 21 families (15 Gastropoda & 4 Bivalvia), including additional information about their biogeographic distribution known in the territorial space of the State.

33. CUANDO LA MEDICINA GRÁFICA ES PERIODISMO CÓMIC: HISTORIAS DE PANDEMIA EN VIÑETAS

Abstract

El cómic, entendido como “una yuxtaposición de palabras e imágenes, en una determinada secuencia, con el objetivo de comunicar historias e ideas”, ha dado el salto a la comunicación sanitaria en forma de lo que se conoce como Medicina Gráfica, que aúna el lenguaje de las viñetas, con el contenido de información para la salud, desde las patografías gráficas a las historias autobiográficas o divulgativas. Un concepto naciente que está en boga. Asimismo, de forma histórica, el Periodismo Cómic se ha considerado como un mero formato de reportaje, de crónica, o, según algunos estudios, como un subgénero del periodismo gráfico. Aunque está claro que este “periodismo lento”, que, en palabas de Joe Sacco, se centra en “la gente que está debajo de los titulares”, es ya un objeto diferente, innovador y único, que desborda el marco teórico-conceptual de los géneros periodísticos dejando a estas obras en un limbo complicado de catalogar. Grandes cabeceras como The New Yorker, Details, Time, New York Time Magazine, XXI, El País, El Norte de Castilla… han usado estas historietas de no ficción del mismo modo y al mismo nivel que plantean sus reportajes, sus fotografías, sus infografías… Este fenómeno global también se ha asentado, llegando a trasladarse en propuestas informativas o narrativas de primer orden, en medios de comunicación tradicionales, más allá de las obras más largas en forma de novela gráfica. Periodismo Cómic y Medicina Gráfica; dos conceptos novedosos que convergen en una fina línea, sobre todo cuando en el 2020, una pandemia global llegó para cambiarlo todo. De entonces a ahora, varias piezas en la frontera de los cómics periodísticos y la medicina gráfica han surgido en todo el mundo. En esta línea, en España destacan: Efectos Secundarios. 19 historietas del covid, de AA.VV.; Pandemia, de AA.VV, y Una historia del Confinamiento, de Paco Roca. En este texto se pretende profundizar en el uso del cómic periodístico en la medicina gráfica con el estudio de caso de las obras surgidas durante la pandemia de la COVID-19, dentro de estos parámetros informativo-divulgativos, como un nuevo formato, una nueva tendencia en comunicación y salud repleta de posibilidades. Un repaso; una hoja de ruta de este nuevo género periodístico que está en auge, con paso lento, pero firme y sus confluencias con el concepto de la graphic medicine.

Abstract

Objetivo: Desenvolver uma reflexão no que se refere ao crime do “Stalking”, registrado por meio de ocorrências policiais na cidade de Brasília, Distrito Federal (DF) e regiões administrativas no ano de 2021. Método: Os dados foram adquiridos junto a Divisão de Análise Técnica e Estatística (DATE), pertencente ao Departamento de Inteligência e Gestão da Informação (DIGI) da Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal (PCDF). Foi implementada análise estatística do tipo descritiva e os resultados foram expostos utilizando uma figura e uma tabela. Resultados: Foi identificado o universo de 1.673 casos, com média e desvio-padrão (167,3±61,0). Os meses de agosto e setembro registraram as maiores preponderâncias, cada um com 12,6% (n=210) e março a menor com 0,4% (n=06). Conclusão: Por meio da presente pesquisa foi possível verificar a importância da Lei Federal de número 14.132/2021, objetivando tipificar o fenômeno do “Stalking”. Também foi possível perceber que o referido dispositivo legislativo, incentivou o registro de ocorrências policiais, além de contribuir para o combate, mitigação e controle deste crime.

35. Moluscos exóticos no marinos 'introducidos' en la isla caribeña de La Española (Hispaniola), Grandes Antillas: una aproximación a su conocimiento

Contando con la invaluable asistencia participativa y apoyo de investigadores locales, naturalistas y colaboradores informantes de campo, el Projeto AM viene desarrollando investigaciones taxonómicas, bioecológicas y de conservación acerca de los “moluscos exóticos no marinos” presentes en el territorio insular caribeño de la isla La Española (Hispaniola), con especial énfasis en las especies no nativas introducidas (de manera proposital o accidental) en su medio ambiente, siendo inventariadas hasta el momento un total general de 36 especies terrestres y de agua dulce (34 gastrópodos & 2 bivalvos), incluídas en 31 géneros y 21 familias.

36. Registros de casos acumulados e novos de variantes de preocupação do COVID-19, Brasil, 2021-2022: Ômicron, Gamma e Delta

Abstract

Objetivo: Analisar a frequência de registros de casos novos e acumulados de variantes de preocupação (VOC) do COVID-19, no “Brasil”, nos anos de “2021 e 2022”. Método: Pesquisa exploratória, descritiva, comparativa e quantitativa. Os dados foram adquiridos junto ao Ministério da Saúde (MS). Resultados: Foi identificado o universo de 113.318 registros, sendo que a maior preponderância se constituiu de casos acumulados com 95,2% (n=107.925) e a menor de casos novos com 4,8% (n=5.393). A VOC Ômicron registrou a maior preponderância, tanto de casos acumulados quanto de casos novos, contabilizando respectivamente 40,3% (n=43.480) e 98,9% (n=5.334). A VOC Gamma registrou a menor preponderância com 24,7% (n=26.607) casos acumulados e 0,1% (n=4) casos novos. Conclusão: Foi verificado aumento na frequência de registros de casos acumulados e novos de VOC Ômicron, Delta e Gamma do COVID-19, no recorte geográfico e histórico analisados Descritores: Brasil; SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19.

Abstract

The history of mineral components in cementitious materials begins with clays and bitumen in the most ancient mortars, followed by gypsum- and lime-based plasters, mortars, and concretes. Romans perfected the fabrication of extremely durable mortars that form the basis of audacious architectural monuments in Rome, massive harbor constructions, and water-proofed cisterns in the Mediterranean region. During the industrial revolution, “natural cements” were developed through the burning of impure limestone or Si- and Al-bearing materials blended with pure limestone. Delving into the past of concrete science and the composition, durability, and resilience of historic binders, mortars, and concretes can inspire the development of modern environmentally friendly cementitious materials.

The Vela pulsar wind nebula is powered by a young pulsar (B0833-45, aged 11,000 years)1 and located inside an extended structure called Vela X, which is itself inside the supernova remnant2. Previous X-ray observations revealed two prominent arcs that are bisected by a jet and counter jet3,4. Radio maps have shown high linear polarization of 60% in the outer regions of the nebula5. Here we report an X-ray observation of the inner part of the nebula, where polarization can exceed 60% at the leading edge—approaching the theoretical limit of what can be produced by synchrotron emission. We infer that, in contrast with the case of the supernova remnant, the electrons in the pulsar wind nebula are accelerated with little or no turbulence in a highly uniform magnetic field. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., The IXPE is a joint US and Italian mission. It is of common consensus that the synchrotron emission is responsible for the low frequency peak, while the origin of the high frequency hump is still debated. The analysis of X-rays and their polarization can provide a valuable tool to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the origin of high-energy emission of blazars. We report the first observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, from which an upper limit to the polarization degree ΠX < 12.6% was found in the 2–8 keV band. We contemporaneously measured the polarization in radio, infrared, and optical wavelengths. Our multiwavelength polarization analysis disfavors a significant contribution of proton-synchrotron radiation to the X-ray emission at these epochs. Instead, it supports a leptonic origin for the X-ray emission in BL Lac. © 2022. The Author(s). Abstract

X-ray polarimetry is a unique way to probe the geometrical configuration of highly magnetized accreting neutron stars (X-ray pulsars). GRO J1008$-$57 is the first transient X-ray pulsar observed at two different flux levels by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) during its outburst in November 2022. We find the polarization properties of GRO J1008$-$57 to be independent of its luminosity, with the polarization degree varying between nondetection and about 15% over the pulse phase. Fitting the phase-resolved spectro-polarimetric data with the rotating vector model allowed us to estimate the pulsar inclination (130 deg, which is in good agreement with the orbital inclination), the position angle (75 deg) of the pulsar spin axis, and the magnetic obliquity (74 deg). This makes GRO J1008$-$57 the first confidently identified nearly orthogonal rotator among X-ray pulsars. Abstract

After about 16 years since its first outburst, the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701$-$462 turned on again in September 2022, allowing for the first study of its X-ray polarimetric characteristics by a dedicated observing program with the Imaging X-ray Polarimeter Explorer (IXPE). Polarimetric studies of XTE J1701$-$462 have been expected to improve our understanding of accreting weakly magnetized neutron stars, in particular, the physics and the geometry of the hot inner regions close to the compact object. The IXPE data of two triggered observations were analyzed using time-resolved spectroscopic and polarimetric techniques, following the source along its Z-track of the color-color diagram. During the first pointing on 2022 September 29, an average 2-8 keV polarization degree of 4.6$\pm$ 0.4\% was measured, the highest value found up to now for this class of sources. Conversely, only a $\sim$0.6\% average degree was obtained during the second pointing ten days later. The polarimetric signal appears to be strictly related to the higher energy blackbody component associated with the boundary layer (BL) emission and its reflection from the inner accretion disk, and it is as strong as 6.1\% and 1.2\% ($>95\%$ significant) above 3-4 keV for the two measurements, respectively. The variable polarimetric signal is apparently related to the spectral characteristics of XTE J1701$-$462, which is the strongest when the source was in the horizontal branch of its Z-track and the weakest in the normal branch. These IXPE results provide new important observational constraints on the physical models and geometry of the Z-sources. Abstract

The centre of the Milky Way Galaxy hosts a black hole with a solar mass of about 4 million (Sagittarius A* (Sgr A)) that is very quiescent at present with a luminosity many orders of magnitude below those of active galactic nuclei1. Reflection of X-rays from Sgr A* by dense gas in the Galactic Centre region offers a means to study its past flaring activity on timescales of hundreds and thousands of years2. The shape of the X-ray continuum and the strong fluorescent iron line observed from giant molecular clouds in the vicinity of Sgr A* are consistent with the reflection scenario3,4,5. If this interpretation is correct, the reflected continuum emission should be polarized6. Here we report observations of polarized X-ray emission in the direction of the molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. We measure a polarization degree of 31% ± 11%, and a polarization angle of −48° ± 11°. The polarization angle is consistent with Sgr A* being the primary source of the emission, and the polarization degree implies that some 200 years ago, the X-ray luminosity of Sgr A* was briefly comparable to that of a Seyfert galaxy.

Abstract

We report the first $> 99\%$ confidence detection of X-ray polarization in BL Lacertae. During a recent X-ray/$\gamma$-ray outburst, a 287 ksec observation (2022 November 27-30) was taken using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer ({\it IXPE}), together with contemporaneous multiwavelength observations from the Neil Gehrels {\it Swift} observatory and {\it XMM-Newton} in soft X-rays (0.3--10~keV), {\it NuSTAR} in hard X-rays (3--70~keV), and optical polarization from the Calar Alto, and Perkins Telescope observatories. Our contemporaneous X-ray data suggest that the {\it IXPE} energy band is at the crossover between the low- and high-frequency blazar emission humps. The source displays significant variability during the observation, and we measure polarization in three separate time bins. Contemporaneous X-ray spectra allow us to determine the relative contribution from each emission hump. We find $>99\%$ confidence X-ray polarization $\Pi_{2-4{\rm keV}} = 21.7^{+5.6}_{-7.9}\%$ and electric vector polarization angle $\psi_{2-4{\rm keV}} = -28.7 \pm 8.7^{\circ}$ in the time bin with highest estimated synchrotron flux contribution. We discuss possible implications of our observations, including previous {\it IXPE} BL Lacertae pointings, tentatively concluding that synchrotron self-Compton emission dominates over hadronic emission processes during the observed epochs., Comment: Accepted to ApJL. 16 pages, 8 figures

However, many questions regarding the physical conditions at shock fronts, such as the magnetic-field morphology close to the particle acceleration sites, remain open. Here we report the detection of a localized polarization signal from some synchrotron X-ray emitting regions of Tycho's supernova remnant made by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The derived degree of polarization of the X-ray synchrotron emission is 9% ± 2% averaged over the whole remnant, and 12% ± 2% at the rim, higher than the value of polarization of 7%–8% observed in the radio band. In the west region, the degree of polarization is 23% ± 4%. The degree of X-ray polarization in Tycho is higher than for Cassiopeia A, suggesting a more ordered magnetic field or a larger maximum turbulence scale. The measured tangential direction of polarization corresponds to the radial magnetic field, and is consistent with that observed in the radio band. These results are compatible with the expectation of turbulence produced by an anisotropic cascade of a radial magnetic field near the shock, where we derive a magnetic-field amplification factor of 3.4 ± 0.3. The fact that this value is significantly smaller than those expected from acceleration models is indicative of highly anisotropic magnetic-field turbulence, or that the emitting electrons either favor regions of lower turbulence, or accumulate close to where the orientation of the magnetic field is preferentially radially oriented due to hydrodynamical instabilities. © 2023. Abstract

We present the IXPE observation of GRB 221009A which includes upper limits on the linear polarization degree of both prompt and afterglow emission in the soft X-ray energy band. GRB 221009A is an exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) that reached Earth on 2022 October 9 after travelling through the dust of the Milky Way. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) pointed at GRB 221009A on October 11 to observe, for the first time, the 2-8 keV X-ray polarization of a GRB afterglow. We set an upper limit to the polarization degree of the afterglow emission of 13.8% at a 99% confidence level. This result provides constraints on the jet opening angle and the viewing angle of the GRB, or alternatively, other properties of the emission region. Additionally, IXPE captured halo-rings of dust-scattered photons which are echoes of the GRB prompt emission. The 99% confidence level upper limit to the prompt polarization degree depends on the background model assumption and it ranges between ~55% to ~82%. This single IXPE pointing provides both the first assessment of X-ray polarization of a GRB afterglow and the first GRB study with polarization observations of both the prompt and afterglow phases., Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $\gamma$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $\gamma$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. CTA is also shown to have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons in deep observations with $\mathcal{O}(100)$ hours of exposure per source., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics
