Abstract

Results of the November 2000 test run of the prototype MVS system are described. The muon rejection factor at the level of 6.0×10 −6 has been achieved with pion detection efficiency near 87%.

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced π 0 π 0 channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f 0 (980), f 0 (1300) and f 0 (1500) in the the S -wave. and the f 2 (1270) is observed dominantly in the D 0 − -wave. In addition, there is evidence for a broad enhancement in the D -wave below 1 GeV.

Abstract

A study of the reactions pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-) and pp -> pfps(K+K-pi+pi-pi0) shows evidence for the K*K* and phi omega channels respectively. The K*K* mass spectrum shows a broad distribution with a maximum near threshold and an angular analysis shows that it is compatible with having JP = 2+. The behaviour of the cross-section as a function of centre of mass energy, and the four momentum transfer dependence, are compatible with what would be expected if the K*K* system was produced via double Pomeron exchange. The dPT behaviour of the phi omega channel is similar to what has been observed for all the undisputed qqbar states. In contrast, the dPT behaviour of the K*K* final state is similar to what has been observed for the phi phi final state and for previously observed glueball candidates.

Abstract

A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and etaprime appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi0. The production properties of the eta and etaprime are not consistent with what is expected from double Pomeron exchange. In addition the production mechanism for the eta and etaprime is such that the production cross section are greatest when the azimuthal angle between the pT vectors of the two protons is 90 degrees., 11 pages, Latex, 3 Figures

Abstract

The analysis confirms the previous observation that all undisputed qqbar states are suppressed at small dPT. Abstract

Central \pipi events produced in pp interactions are studied in terms of correlations between the outgoing protons. It is observed there is more $\rho^{0}$(770) and \fmeson production in reactions where the outgoing protons %fastest and slowest particles in the laboratory frame are on opposite sides of the beam. This effect is not attributable to the trigger or the experimental acceptance, and suggests that the vertices do not factorise.

Abstract

A high-statistics study of the π0π0-system produced in the π-p→π0π0n reaction at 38GeV/c has been carried out at the IHEP accelerator using the GAMS-2000 multiphoton spectrometer. A partial-wave analysis which includesS, D0, D− andD+ waves has been performed in the |t|-range up to 1 (GeV/c)2. TheS*/f0(980) resonance is seen as a dip in theS-wave amplitude at small |t|. A distinct peak with a mass of 997±5MeV and a width of 48±10MeV is observed in theS-wave at |t|>0.3 (GeV/c)2. The production cross sections are measured.

Abstract

A planar version of the BAYAN electromagnetic calorimeter is tested with 10, 25, 50 and 100 GeV electrons at CERN SPS beam. The BAYAN energy resolution shows a very low constant term: σ E E=7.7% E ⊕ 0.2% . In the range E ≥ 100 GeV it drops well below 1%.

Recent results on ωπ0 partial-wave analysis from the GAMS Collaboration are presented. A partial-wave analysis of the 38 GeV/c π-p charge exchange data confirmed the existence of theρ(2200) radial-orbital excitation of theρ(770) ground-state observed earlier in the same experiment. A new 5−− state,π5(2350), was also observed in this analysis. Masses, widths and production cross-sections for these states are given.

Abstract

The branching ratio of the rare radiative decay ω→ηγ has been measured: BR(ω→ηγ)=(8.3±2.1)·10−4. The experiment was performed at the IHEP (Serpukhov) accelerator with 38 GeV/c incident pions in the chargeexchange reaction π-p→ωn the photons from the ω→ηγ→3γ decay being detected with the multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-2000. The influence of ω-ρ mixing, which was a source of ambiguity in the interpretation of previous experiments, has been much reduced by measuring the ω produced at large momentum transfer.

Abstract

The rare ηγ decay width of the ω-meson has been measured in a model-independent way, with ω produced in 38 GeV/c π−p charge-exchange. Large momentum transfer events have been selected in order to eliminate ω-ρ interference contribution. BR (ω→ηγ) =(8.3±2.1)·10−4. The gammas from ω→ηγ→3γ decay have been detected with the multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-2000 at the IHEP 70 GeV proton accelerator.

Abstract

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has been further studied at 38 GeV/ c with increased statistics. The peak at 2 GeV that has been previously observed in the ωω mass spectrum is due to two resonances. The first one is a tensor meson with a mass of 1920 MeV. The second is f 4 (2050). The branching ratio BR [f 4 (2050)→ ωω ] = 0.26±0.06 has been measured.

Abstract

A study of the centrally produced ppbar, ppbarpi, ppbarpipi and lambda lambda channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra, however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. A systematic study of the production properties of these systems has been performed and it is found that these systems are not produced dominantly by double Pomeron exchange., Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced pi+pi- channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f0(980), f0(1300), f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0 in the the S-wave. The rho(770) is observed dominantly in the P0-wave and the f2(1270) is observed dominantly in the D0-wave. Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and K0K0 channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0. Abstract

The reaction pp to pfps(K+K-K+K-) in which the K+K-K+K- system is centrally produced has been studied at 450 GeV/c. Phi phi production has been found to dominate this reaction and is compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the reactions pp -> pf(k0k+pi-)ps and pp -> pf(K0K0pi0)ps at 450 GeV/c. Clear f1(1285) and f1(1420) signals are seen and a spin parity analysis shows that both have IG JPC=0+ 1++. The f1(1285) decays to a0(980)pi and the f1(1420) decays to K* Kbar. Both states have a similar dependence as a function of dPT consistent with what has been observed for other qqbar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for qqbar states. Abstract

New data on the ν′ν system produced in the π−p charge exchange at 38 GeV c momentum confirm the existence of the narrow ν′ν resonance X(1910). The hypothesis of the X(1910) quantum numbers being a JPC = 1−+, forbidden for the q[ovbar|q] meson, is proposed to explain the extremely low limits obtained for X(1910) decays through π0π0, νν and K0sK0s channels and the flat t-dependence of the X(1910) production cross section.

The rare radiative decay η → π0γγ has been effectively observed and studied at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator with the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. Abstract

A hodoscope γ spectrometer comprising 1536 lead-glass cells is described. This detector allows the coordinates and the energies of a large number of gammas (up to ≈ 10) to be measured simultaneously and the masses (with an accuracy of 1%) and the momenta of particles decaying into photons to be determined. The use of fast processors allows selection of events by mass, energy and momentum transfer. The procedure for a fully automatic calibration of the spectrometer in an electron beam (with ∼ 1% accuracy) and for its control during long-term physical experiments is described.

Abstract

The invariant mass spectrum of neutral meson states from π − p interactions at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum has been investigated in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. To detect the high energy photons coming from the produced neutral states, a hodoscope spectrometer with a computer on-line was used. A clear structure on the mass spectrum of dipions produced in the reaction π − p→π°π°n is observed at 2 GeV. The decay angular distributions show in this mass region the variation with mass typical of a state with a spin J = 4. The mass of the observed meson is found to be M = (2020±30)MeV and the estimate of the full width is (180±60) MeV.

Abstract

η′η pair production in the charge exchange reaction π-p→η′ηn has been observed and studied in a search for glueballs with the 38 GeV/c pion beam of the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The γ-rays from the decay η′η→4γ were detected with the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The η′η events in the mass range from threshold up to 1.8 GeV are decays of the scalar G(1590)-meson which has been already observed in its ηη decay mode. Abstract

The neutral decay of the η'(958)-meson η' → ωγ → π0γγ → 4γ has been studied. The experiment has been performed in the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator with the multiphoton hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The measured branching ratio of the η' → ωγ decay (BR = 0.0330 ± 0.0036) is found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

Evidence for a new meson decaying into ηη′ has been found in 38 GeV π − p charge-exchange interactions. The mass and the width of this meson are (1917 ± 15) MeV and (90 −50 +35 ) MeV, respectively. Possible spin and parity assignments are J PC = 0 ++ , 1 −+ or 2 ++ , isospin and G -parity are I G = 0 + . The t -dependence of the differential cross section follows an exponential behaviour exp( bt with a small slope: b = (2±1) (GeV/ c ) −2 .Upper limits on its decay into ππ, ηη and K K exotic interpretation of this meson.

π−p→π0n differential cross-sections have been measured in the region of small 4-momentum transfer at 40 GeV/c incident momentum. The experiment performed at the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator makes use of a hodoscope γ-spectrometer. Thet- dependence of the cross-section points to a dominance of the spin-flip amplitude.

Abstract

The reaction π − p→ π 0 ηn ↳2y ↳2y has been analyzed using data of an experimental performed at the 70 GeV accelerator, with the NICE 648 channel hodoscope spectrometer for γ ray detection. Events with 4γ seen are used for the analysis. A method is applied, which allows the determination of the number of π0η events for each mass, cosθGJ and t bin. Mass spectra, t distributions and decay angular distributions for the π0η system are presented. The cross section for the production of A20 is found to be 2.7 ± 1.1 μb at 40 GeV/c beam momentum. No indication of a resonant 1− state in the π0η system is observed, in spite of the fact that this state is allowed for the π0η system on the same footing as the observed 0+ and 2+ resonances.

Abstract

The present paper gives a description of the apparatus and method to measure PM gain short-term instability under the condition of pulsed light source simulating the operation at proton synchrotons. Experimental results are presented for FEU-84, FEU-85, FEU-110, FEU-115 and XP2010 photomultipliers. It is shown that the short-term gain instability can be described by a simple mathematical model.

Abstract

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has studied for the first time at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The six photons from the decay of the two ω mesons were detected in GAMS-2000, a hodoscope multi-photon spectometer. Two resonances decaying into ωω,X (1640) and X(1960), have been observed. Their quantum numbers are J PC =2 ++ , I G =0 + . The reaction is dominated by the one-pion exchange mechanism. The production cross sections σ. BR(X→ ωω ) are 0.65±0.15 μ b and 1.0±0.2 μ b, respectively.

Abstract

The differences in width and in deposited energy between electromagnetic and hadron showers developed by 18.5 and 38 GeV/c pions and electrons in a combined hodoscope detector composed of a GAMS-type electromagnetic calorimeter and a modular hadron calorimeter allow to reject pions or electrons to a level ⪡ 0.1% keeping a detection efficiency larger than 90% when the other particle is selected. The hadron calorimeter helps to efficiently reject background in studies of multiphoton decays of neutral mesons with GAMS.

Abstract

The decay η′ → ηπ0π0 → 6γ has been measured accurately with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The parameters of a linear matrix element have been obtained which show that it is practically constant, with a slight dependence on only one of the Dalitz variables.

Abstract

The reaction π − p→ π 0 π 0 n has been measured with a 648 channel hodoscope spectrometer for the detection of the four γ's from the π 0 decays. The π 0 π 0 D-wave is fully compatible with the f 0 contribution as it is determined in high-statistics π + π − experiments. The magnitude of the π 0 π 0 S-wave and the cosinus of its phase angle (relative to the known D-wave) are determined from fits to the π 0 π 0 angular distributions. Argand diagrams for the I = 0 amplitude S 0 are given for the range 1000 to 1500 MeV/ c 2 . Two solutions exist. One exceeds the unitarity limit above 1200 MeV/ c 2 . The other remains within the unitarity limit and is nearly elastic up to 1450 MeV/ c 2 . It indicates an S 0 wave resonance around 1300 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

A high statistics measurement of the reaction π−p → π0n has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator for 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/c incident pion momentum using the NICE set-up with its associated 648-channel hodoscope spectrometer for γ-ray detection. More than 3 million charge-exchange events have been recorded in total. It is found that the spin-flip and non-spin-flip amplitudes can be parametrized, for small |t|, as exponentials with the same slopes to within a few percent. Also the behaviour of the differential cross section for small and medium |t| agrees with the prediction of a geometrical s-channel model which describes binary reactions in terms of a complex pole b0(s). The imaginary part of this universal pole, Im b0(s), has been determined and found to be growing logarithmically with s.

Abstract

Searching for new heavy particles, we have investigated the invariant mass spectra of neutral final states from π − p interactions at 40 GeV/c incident momentum. No particles, in the mass region from 2 to 5 GeV, decaying in γ- rays, π 0 , η and X 0 mesons, have been found to a level of about 10 −34 cm 2 .

Abstract

The production of χ particles in the reaction π−p → χ + … has been studied near threshold. The measurements have been performed at the 70 GeV IHEP proton synchrotron using the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The χ particles have been identified through their decay χ → J/ψ + γ, J/ψ → e+e−. In the region XF ≳0.4 the fraction of obsered J/ψ particles which is obtained via the decay of χ states is 0.44 ± 0.16. The χ longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are similar to those obtained for J/ψ. The inclusive production cross section of χ particles (3P1 and 3P2 states) at 38 GeV/c is σXF>0 (π−p → χ + …) = (28±11) nb.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator the rate decay η '(958) → 3 π 0 , which violates isosoin conservation, has been observed. The six final decay gamma rays are detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The branching ratio of this decay is BR ( η ' → 3 π 0 ) = (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 −3 . An estimate of the ratio of the masses of u and d quarks is given.

Abstract

In a high-statistics experiment (200 events/nanobarn) performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator, a new dipion resonance has been observed in π-p collisions at 38 GeV/c momentum. The gamma-rays in reaction π-p → M0n, M0 → π0π0 → 4γ have been detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The new meson, r(2510), has a mass (2510±30) MeV/c2, a width (240±60) MeV/c2 and spin-parity J PC=6++. Abstract

A narrow meson which decays into ηη is observed in 38 GeV/ c π − p collisions at large momentum transfer. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer. The mass of this new meson is (1755 ± 8) MeV, its width is less than 50 MeV. Its spin-parity is J PC =0 ++ or less probably 2 ++ .

Abstract

A 208 channel hodoscope γ spectrometer, the cells of which are made of lead-glass, is described. This detector makes it possible to measure simultaneously the coordinates (with an accuracy of 1.5 mm), and energy (to a few percent) of a large number of gammas and to reconstruct the mass and momentum of the particles decaying into gammas. The characteristics of the spectrometer have been studied in an electron beam and also under the conditions of real experiments ( π 0 → 2 γ ).

Abstract

New data on the scalar G(1590) meson which decays into ηη have been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS. η pairs are detected with the electromagnetic calorimeter GAMS both through their decay into 4γ and into 8γ. ϵ(1300), f(1270), f′(1525) as well as the spin-4 h(2030) mesons have also been observed to decay in the same mode. Their branching ratios have been evaluated. The presence of high-mass spin-0 and spin-2 structures is discussed.

Abstract

Data on the 4π 0 decay mode of mesons have been obtained in a search for glueballs performed at the CERN SPS with the GAMS-4000 multiphoton spectrometer. A new tensor glueball candidate X(1810) appears as a clear peak in the 4π 0 mass spectrum. The 4π 0 decay of G(1590) is also observed. The measured value of BR(G→4 π 0 )/BR(G→ ηη )=0.8±0.3 further supports the glueball assignment of this scalar particle. The rate decay of f(1270) into 4π 0 has been measured: BR(f→4 π 0 ) = (3±1)×10 −3 .
