Abstract

The production of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 mesons in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ s NN = 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) was measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 was determined to be $$0.162 \pm 0.001 (stat.) \pm 0.011 (sys.)$$ 0.162 ± 0.001 ( s t a t . ) ± 0.011 ( s y s . ) . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data.

Abstract

—The results of developments of materials and structures used for generation and detection of terahertz radiation having applied photoconductive antennas are presented. The developments were carried out in three directions: optimization of parameters of nanoplasmonic antennas, formation of superlattice heterostructures based on InGaAs, and use of layered and two-dimensional semiconductors. The necessity and ways for further improvement in characteristics of the terahertz antennas for expanding the field of application of this radiation in spectroscopy of materials, biomedical diagnostics, metrology, spintronics, wireless communications, etc., are shown.

Abstract

We report on a terahertz (THz) detector based on a photoconductive antenna (PCA) utilizing an artificially strained undoped InGaAs/InAlAs superlattice (SL). Using our laboratory pulsed THz time-domain spectrometer, we demonstrate the advancement of the strain-induced SL-based PCA detector (SID) when operating with an optical probe power of $P_{\text{opt}}>$ 6 mW over the PCA detector based on a lattice-matched InGaAs/InAlAs SL (LMD). Both detectors demonstrate a broad frequency bandwidth of 3.5 THz at the excitation wavelength of 780 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of $\sim$ 70 dB. The experimental results demonstrate a change in the behavior of two detectors: At $P_{\text{opt}}$ = 1 mW, the LMD shows a bit increased SNR compared to that for SID, while vice versa at $P_{\text{opt}}$ = 10 mW. Also, SID shows a quadratic dependence of its SNR on $P_{\text{opt}}$ while the SNR for LMD starts saturating at $P_{\text{opt}}\;\sim$ 5 mW. Moreover, the noise floor in SID is almost independent on probe power, while the noise floor for LMD demonstrates a rapid growth with an increase of $P_{\text{opt}}$ . We believe that SID coupled to a fiber telecommunication wavelength laser could open a pathway toward the development and fabrication of portable and cost-effective THz photoconductive devices.

Abstract

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central $${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+ $${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Abstract

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in the 20% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be+ $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos, Urqmd, Ampt, Phsd and Smash models.

6. Terahertz generation from surface of the bulk and monolayer tungsten diselenide

Abstract

The study of ultrafast laser interaction with graphene-like materials based on transition metal dichalcogenides attracts most scientific groups. It is connected with potential use of these materials in flexible optoelectronic devices of visible and THz range. In this paper the parameters of generation of terahertz field from the surface of bulk layered crystal and monolayer film of tungsten diselenide are analyzed. Generation of terahertz radiation from the surface of experimental samples was studied by the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in reflection geometry. Bulk layered crystals of tungsten diselenide were grown by gas transport reactions. Monolayers of tungsten diselenide crystals were grown by chemical vapor deposition on a silicon substrate. The bandwidth of the generated terahertz radiation from the surface of the bulk layered tungsten diselenide crystal was ~ 3.5 THz. For tungsten diselenide monolayer the spectrum bandwidth of the generated THz radiation was ~ 2.5 THz. The peak amplitude of the generated terahertz field for both samples was at a frequency of ~ 1 THz. Research of the influence of the angle of rotation of a polarization plane of optical femtosecond pump on peak-to-peak amplitude of the generated terahertz field from the surface of investigated samples was carried out. Symmetry analysis of the azimuthal dependence of THz radiation made it possible to separate the mechanisms of THz radiation and evaluate their contribution. The analysis results confirm that the only possible contribution to the generation of terahertz radiation in a tungsten diselenide monolayer crystal is the second order nonlinear optical effect – optical rectification. One of the contributions to the generation of tungsten diselenide is a nonlinear-optical effect of the third order – surface optical rectification.

Abstract

A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $$\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $$ Δ η Δ ϕ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $$\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$$ Ge / c . Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $$C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$$ C ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $$(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$$ ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) = ( 0 , 0 ) with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton–proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

Abstract

A highly sensitive terahertz (THz) detector based on a photoconductive antenna (PCA) with plasmonic amplification on the basis of an InGaAs/InAlAs superlattice heterostructure is proposed. A noticeable increase in the photocurrent recorded by a plasmonic PCA detector and the signal-to-noise ratio was experimentally detected compared to the same parameters for the PCA detector without plasmonic electrodes. The efficiency of plasmonic electrodes has been experimentally confirmed by pulsed THz spectroscopy by measuring the dependence of the detector’s THz signal amplitude on the polarization of the incident pump laser radiation.

Abstract

The NA61/SHINE collaboration studies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the onset of deconfinement in hadronic matter by the measurement of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in the 5% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c obtained by the so-called $$h^-$$ h - method which does not require any particle identification. The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured in central Pb + Pb collisions and inelastic p+p interactions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon–nucleon and central Pb + Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon in central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions is close to that in central Pb + Pb collisions up to 75 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c . However, at the top SPS energy the result lies between those for nucleon–nucleon and Pb + Pb interactions. The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

Abstract

The production of $$\Xi (1321)^{-}$$ Ξ ( 1321 ) - and $$\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ ( 1321 ) + hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c . Double differential distributions in rapidity $${y}$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{T}$$ p T are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - and $$\overline{\Xi }{^+} $$ Ξ ¯ + . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract

The measurement of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K+π- decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ sNN=17.3 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }$$ GeV ) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 signal and double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 mesons was found to be $$(78.44 \pm 0.38 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 6.0 \mathrm {(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$$ (78.44±0.38(stat)±6.0(sys))·10-3 . The NA61/SHINEresults are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Abstract

Results on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $$\phi \rightarrow K^+ K^- $$ ϕ→K+K- decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons as a function of rapidity $$y$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for proton beam momenta of $$80 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 80GeV/c and $$158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 158GeV/c , as well as single differential spectra of $$y$$ y or $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for beam momentum of $$40 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 40GeV/c . The corresponding total $$\phi $$ ϕ yields per inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in $$p + p$$ p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons in $$p + p$$ p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in $$\mathrm{Pb} + \mathrm{Pb}$$ Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observations.

Abstract

International audience; We report an increase in terahertz (THz) radiation efficiency due to FeCo/WSe2 structures in the reflection geometry. This can be attributed to an absorption increase in the alloy FeCo layer at the input FeCo/WSe2 interface due to constructive interference, as well as to the backward transport of hot carriers from FeCo to WSe2 . In contrast to the transmission geometry, the THz generation efficiency in the reflection is much less dependent on the magnetic layer thickness. Our results suggest a cheap and efficient way to improve the characteristics of THz spintronic emitters with the conservation of a full set of their important properties. © 2021 by the authors. Abstract

Parameters of terahertz (THz) emission in two-dimensional (2D) tungsten diselenide (WSe2) film grown by chemical vapor deposition from the gas phase have been studied for the first time. The main mechanism of THz radiation generation in this system is established. Dependence of the THz signal amplitude on azimuthal angle in a 2D WSe2 film has been studied. The distribution of the electric field of laser pumping in the WSe2/SiO2/Si structure has been calculated as dependent on the thickness of silicon dioxide layer. The choice of optimum structure geometry for effective generation of THz radiation by a WSe2 monolayer is theoretically substantiated.

Abstract

Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text {Ge}\text {V}/c$$ Ge / c beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $$\omega $$ ω and strongly intensive measures $$\Sigma $$ Σ and $$\Delta $$ Δ . These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is preformed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus–nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

Abstract

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central$${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+$${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150$$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Abstract

The production cross section of 30.92 GeV/c protons on carbon is measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS by means of beam attenuation in a copy (replica) of the 90-cm-long target of the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment. The employed method for direct production cross-section estimation minimizes model corrections for elastic and quasi-elastic interactions. The obtained production cross section is σ$_{prod}$ = 227.6 ± 0.8(stat)$\frac{+1.9}{−3.2}$(sys) − 0.8(mod) mb. It is in agreement with previous NA61/SHINE results obtained with a thin carbon target, while providing improved precision with a total fractional uncertainty of less than 2%. This direct measurement is performed to reduce the uncertainty on the T2K neutrino flux prediction associated with the re-weighting of the interaction rate of neutrino-yielding hadrons.

Abstract

Polarization of electromagnetic waves plays an extremely important role in interaction of radiation with matter. In particular, interaction of polarized waves with ordered matter strongly depends on orientation and symmetry of vibrations of chemical bonds in crystals. In quantum technologies, the polarization of photons is considered as a “degree of freedom”, which is one of the main parameters that ensure efficient quantum computing. However, even for visible light, polarization control is in most cases separated from light emission. In this paper, we report on a new type of polarization control, implemented directly in a spintronic terahertz emitter. The principle of control, realized by a weak magnetic field at room temperature, is based on a spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in an intermetallic heterostructure TbCo2/FeCo with uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy. SRT is implemented under magnetic field of variable strength but of a fixed direction, orthogonal to the easy magnetization axis. Variation of the magnetic field strength in the angular (canted) phase of the SRT causes magnetization rotation without changing its magnitude. The charge current excited by the spin-to-charge conversion is orthogonal to the magnetization. As a result, THz polarization rotates synchronously with magnetization when magnetic field strength changes. Importantly, the radiation intensity does not change in this case. Control of polarization by SRT is applicable regardless of the spintronic mechanism of the THz emission, provided that the polarization direction is determined by the magnetic moment orientation. The results obtained open the prospect for the development of the SRT approach for THz emission control.

Abstract

Polarized THz radiation is increasingly being investigated and applied in the new interdisciplinary field “TeraNano.” We report the generation of terahertz (THz) radiation by a linearly polarized femtosecond optical pulse in black phosphorus (BP) crystallites grown by chemical vapor deposition. Characterization of THz radiation is performed by time-resolved THz spectroscopy. It was found that BP emits elliptically polarized THz radiation with an ellipticity of e = 0.77 ± 0.03. A saturation was found in the dependence of the THz intensity on the intensity of the incident optical pump for the latter higher than 6 mJ / cm2. The results of our work can provide new fundamental knowledge needed to create detectors and generators based on BP in the THz range.

Using terahertz spectroscopy, we investigated the terahertz emission from the surface of bulk Mo0.5W0.5S2 crystallites. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the generated terahertz radiation obtained. We demonstrate the possibility of using Mo0.5W0.5S2 alloy in terahertz devices.

Abstract

Particle knockout scattering experiments1,2 are fundamental for mapping the structure of atomic nuclei2–6, but their interpretation is often complicated by initial- and final-state interactions of the incoming and scattered particles1,2,7–9. Such interactions lead to reduction in the scattered particle flux and distort their kinematics. Here we overcome this limitation by measuring the quasi-free scattering of 48 GeV c–1 12C ions from hydrogen. The distribution of single protons is studied by detecting two protons at large angles in coincidence with an intact 11B nucleus. The 11B detection suppresses the otherwise large distortions of reconstructed single-proton distributions induced by initial- and final-state interactions. By further detecting residual 10B and 10Be nuclei, we also identified short-range correlated nucleon–nucleon pairs9–13 and provide direct experimental evidence for separation of the pair wavefunction from that of the residual many-body nuclear system9,14. All measured reactions are well described by theoretical calculations that include no distortions from the initial- and final-state interactions. Our results showcase the ability to study the short-distance structure of short-lived radioactive nuclei at the forthcoming Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR)15 and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB)16 facilities, which is relevant for understanding the structure and properties of nuclei far from stability and the formation of visible matter in the Universe. Initial- and final-state interactions distort the kinematics in particle knockout scattering experiments, complicating their interpretation. These effects are suppressed by detecting 11B nuclei in quasi-free scattering of 12C ions from hydrogen.

Abstract

Surface THz emission was observed from monolayer and bulk WSe2 via THz time-domain spectroscopy. Frequency and temporal spectra of the generated THz pulses were studied. Azimuthal dependencies of peak-to-peak THz amplitude were obtained for both layered WSe2. It was assumed that the generation of THz radiation in the bulk WSe2 occur due to the motion of photoexcited carriers and in the monolayer WSe2 due to nonlinear processes occurring after interaction with optical femtosecond pulses.

This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in the 20% most central$^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A ${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. Abstract

In this work, we present the experimental results of the study of THz radiation generated by layered WS2, MoSe2 and Mo0.5W0.5S2. THz radiation was observed in the range of 0.1-3 THz. An increase in the amplitude of THz radiation in Mo0.5W0.5S2 relative to WS2, MoSe2 is shown. A symmetry analysis of the azimuthal dependences of THz radiation made it possible to estimate the contribution of THz radiation mechanisms to the generation of THz radiation.

Abstract

The NA61/SHINE collaboration studies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the onset of deconfinement in hadronic matter by the measurement of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra and mean multiplicities of$$\pi ^{-}$$π-mesons produced in the 5% mostcentral$$^7$$7Be +$$^9$$9Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75Aand 150$$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$AGeV/cobtained by the so-called$$h^-$$h-method which does not require any particle identification. The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured incentralPb + Pb collisions and inelasticp+pinteractions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon–nucleon andcentralPb + Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon incentral$$^7$$7Be +$$^9$$9Be collisions is close to that incentralPb + Pb collisions up to 75$$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$AGeV/c. However, at the top SPS energy the result lies between those for nucleon–nucleon and Pb + Pb interactions. The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

Abstract

The production of $$\Xi (1321)^{-}$$ Ξ ( 1321 ) - and $$\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ ( 1321 ) + hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c . Double differential distributions in rapidity $${y}$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{T}$$ p T are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - and $$\overline{\Xi }{^+} $$ Ξ ¯ + . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract

The European physical journal / C 80(12), 1151 (1-20) (2020). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-020-08675-4, A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$. Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$ correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$ with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. Abstract

Here we present the results of the exciton states study in WSe2 and MoS2 monolayers. Thin WSe2 and MoS2 films obtained by CVD technique were studied by optical methods. The films two-dimensionality and homogeneity were confirmed by the methods of atomic force microscopy and luminescence spectroscopy. The second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy technique was used for the exciton states study at room temperature in the pump photon energy range of 0.8-1.05 eV. The sevenfold SHG intensity resonance amplification was found for the 1.62 eV and 1.87 eV SHG photon energy for the WSe2 and MoS2 films, respectively, that corresponds to the exciton transition energy. These resonance peaks belong to optical A excitons with 1s energy level.

Abstract

We report on the time-resolved measurements of photocarrier dynamics in InGaAs/InAlAs superlattices with epitaxial stresses in a wide range of optical pump fluences. We demonstrated that the contribution of free carrier absorption and two-photon absorption to the carrier dynamics decreases with an increase of epitaxial stresses. The lowest relaxation times of 1.7 and 8.3 ps, respectively attributed to carrier trapping and carrier recombination, were obtained for the structure with maximum epitaxial stresses.

Abstract

Pentaquark states have been extensively investigated theoretically in the context of the constituent quark model. In this paper results of an experimental search for pentaquarks in the Ξ- π-, Ξ- π+, Ξ¯+ π- and Ξ¯+ π+ invariant mass spectra in proton-proton interactions at s=17.3 GeV are presented. Previous possible evidence from the NA49 collaboration of the existence of a narrow Ξ- π- baryon resonance in p+p interactions is not confirmed with almost 10 times greater event statistics. The search was performed using the NA61/SHINE detector which reuses the main components of the NA49 apparatus. No signal was observed with either the selection cuts of NA49 or newly optimized cuts.

Abstract

Results on $$\phi $$ϕ meson production in inelastic $$p + p$$p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $$\phi \rightarrow K^+ K^- $$ϕ→K+K- decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $$\phi $$ϕ mesons as a function of rapidity $$y$$y and transverse momentum $$p_{\text {T}}$$pT for proton beam momenta of $$80 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$80GeV/c and $$158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$158GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $$y$$y or $$p_{\text {T}}$$pT for beam momentum of $$40 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$40GeV/c. The corresponding total $$\phi $$ϕ yields per inelastic $$p + p$$p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $$\phi $$ϕ meson production in $$p + p$$p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $$\phi $$ϕ mesons in $$p + p$$p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in $$\mathrm{Pb} + \mathrm{Pb}$$Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observations.

Abstract

The influence of excitation photons energy on the relaxation times of photoexcited carriers is studied. The involved relaxation mechanisms are evaluated and the reflection coefficient of the InGaAs/InAlAs superlattice heterostructures is analyzed. A model is built for the reflection coefficient of the InAlAs barrier layer, depending on the excitation photons energy. The resonance behavior of the reflection coefficient is explained.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical studies of nonlinear optical properties of LaFeO3 thin film, which is antiferromagnetic and centrosymmetric, the latter provides prohibition of second harmonic generation in electric-dipole approximation. Spectroscopic studies have shown the presence of the resonant frequency in the spectrum of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) at the pump photon energy 2ћω ≈ 2.85 eV. Comparison of SHG and absorption spectra at the second harmonic wavelength, the new characteristics have been identified, related to the presence of the electronic transition which results in the resonance spectral dependence. The models were suggested for the description of the polarization dependency for the two pump laser wavelengths (non-resonant 800 nm and resonant 860 nm), as well as for the calculation of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor components. The magnetically induced SHG was observed for the conditions of maximal suppression of crystallographic (electric dipole- or electric quadruple) contribution obtained by choice of appropriate polarization rules for the pump and second harmonic waves.

Abstract

Precise knowledge of hadron production rates in the generation of neutrino beams is necessary for accelerator-based neutrino experiments to achieve their physics goals. NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/$c$ $\pi^+$ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $K^0_{S}$, $\Lambda$ and anti-$\Lambda$ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$ and protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

Abstract

This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/c protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/c protons with C and Be targets. The analysis is performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. First measurements are obtained using protons at 120 GeV/c, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/c are compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Abstract

This work is devoted to disclosing the effect of epitaxial strain on crystallographic, transport, and nonlinear optical properties of a bilayer structure consisting of one ferroelectric (FE) (BaTiO3 with a thickness of 4 nm) and one ferromagnetic (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 with the thickness of 12 nm) layers. Both tensile (of about ∼6% caused by the MgO substrate) and compressive (of about ∼1% caused by the SrTiO3 substrate) strains reduce the bulk metal-to-insulator phase transition temperature of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 layer from 240 K towards 195 K and 160 K, respectively. The appearance of the effect of colossal electroresistance, linear and nonlinear current–voltage behaviours and contribution of FE polarization switching in the BaTiO3 layer to the conductivity are associated with the influence of epitaxial strain. The predominance of the compressive over the tensile strain leads to the hysteresis behaviour of electroresistance, maximum conductivity caused by the resonant-tunnelling mechanism, and strong nonlinear optical dependence on the applied electric field.

Abstract

Low-temperature gallium arsenide (LT-GaAs) films were grown by the method of molecularbeam epitaxy (MBE) at a reduced temperature (230°C) on GaAs(100) substrates and subjected to postgrowth annealing in various regimes. Photoconductive antennas (PCAs) with flag geometry formed on the film surface were characterized by terahertz (THz) response power at various bias voltages. The method of THz spectroscopy was used to study the characteristics of PCAs based on LT-GaAs films annealed in various regimes and the optimum interval of postgrowth annealing temperatures (670–720°C) was established.
