One of the critical challenges facing imaging studies of the 21-cm signal at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is the separation of astrophysical foreground contamination. These foregrounds are known to lie in a wedge-shaped region of $(k_{\perp},k_{\parallel})$ Fourier space. Removing these Fourier modes excises the foregrounds at grave expense to image fidelity, since the cosmological information at these modes is also removed by the wedge filter. However, the 21-cm EoR signal is non-Gaussian, meaning that the lost wedge modes are correlated to the surviving modes by some covariance matrix. We have developed a machine learning-based method which exploits this information to identify ionized regions within a wedge-filtered image. Our method reliably identifies the largest ionized regions and can reconstruct their shape, size, and location within an image. We further demonstrate that our method remains viable when instrumental effects are accounted for, using the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array and the Square Kilometre Array as fiducial instruments. The ability to recover spatial information from wedge-filtered images unlocks the potential for imaging studies using current- and next-generation instruments without relying on detailed models of the astrophysical foregrounds themselves., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the performance of group finding algorithms that reconstruct galaxy groups from the positional information of tracer galaxies that are observed in redshift surveys carried out with multiplexed spectrographs. We use mock light-cones produced by the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution in which the underlying reality is known. We particularly focus on the performance at high redshift, and how this is affected by choices of the mass of the tracer galaxies (largely equivalent to their co-moving number density) and the (assumed random) sampling rate of these tracers. We first however compare two different approaches to group finding as applied at low redshift, and conclude that these are broadly comparable. For simplicity we adopt just one of these, "Friends-of-Friends" (FoF) as the basis for our study at high redshift. We introduce 12 science metrics that are designed to quantify the performance of the group-finder as relevant for a wide range of science investigations with a group catalogue. These metrics examine the quality of the recovered group catalogue, the median halo masses of different richness structures, the scatter in dark matter halo mass and how successful the group-finder classifies singletons, centrals and satellites. We analyze how these metrics vary with the limiting stellar mass and random sampling rate of the tracer galaxies, allowing quantification of the various trade-offs between different possible survey designs. Finally, we look at the impact of these same design parameters on the relative "costs" in observation time of the survey using as an example the potential MOONRISE survey using the MOONS instrument., ERC STFC

The standard cosmological model is inherently relativistic, and yet a wide range of cosmological observations can be predicted accurately from essentially Newtonian theory. This is not the case on `ultra-large' distance scales, around the cosmic horizon size, however, where relativistic effects can no longer be neglected. In this paper, we present a novel suite of 53 fully relativistic simulations generated using the gevolution code, each covering the full sky out to $z \approx$ 0.85, and approximately 1930 square degrees out to $z \approx$ 3.55. These include a relativistic treatment of massive neutrinos, as well as the gravitational potential that can be used to exactly calculate observables on the past light cone. The simulations are divided into two sets, the first being a set of 39 simulations of the same fiducial cosmology (based on the Euclid Flagship 2 cosmology) with different realisations of the initial conditions, and the second which fixes the initial conditions, but varies each of seven cosmological parameters in turn. Taken together, these simulations allow us to perform statistical studies and calculate derivatives of any relativistic observable with respect to cosmological parameters. As an example application, we compute the cross-correlation between the Doppler magnification term in the convergence, $\kappa_v$, and the CDM+baryon density contrast, $\delta_{\rm cb}$, which arises only in a (special) relativistic treatment. We are able to accurately recover this term as predicted by relativistic perturbation theory, and study its sample variance and derivatives with respect to cosmological parameters., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, corresponds to published version

Hydroxyl ($\rm OH$) is known to form efficiently in cold gas ($T\sim 100$K) along with the molecule $\rm H_2$ and can be used as an efficient tracer of the diffuse molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM). Using a simple formalism describing the $\rm H\,I/H_2$ transition and a reduced network of major chemical reactions, we present a semi-analytical prescription to estimate the abundances of O-bearing molecules in the diffuse ISM. We show that predictions based on our prescription are in good agreement with the estimates obtained using the MEUDON PDR code which utilizes the full reaction network. We investigate the dependence of the relative abundances of $\rm OH/H\,I$ and $\rm OH/H_2$ on the variations of physical conditions i.e., the metallicity, number density ($n$), cosmic ray ionization rate ($\zeta$) and strength of UV field ($\chi$) in the medium. We find that the $\rm OH/H\,I$ abundances observed in the Galactic ISM can be reproduced by models with $n\sim 50$cm$^{-3}$, $\chi\sim 1$ (Mathis field) and $\zeta\sim3\times10^{-17}$s$^{-1}$, with a variation of about one dex allowed around these values. Using the constrained $\rm H_2$ column density distribution function at $z\sim3$, we estimate the $\rm OH$ column density distribution function and discuss future prospects with the upcoming large radio absorption line surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Many non-minimal dark matter scenarios lead to oscillatory features in the matter power spectrum induced by interactions either within the dark sector or with particles from the standard model. Observing such dark acoustic oscillations would therefore be a major step towards understanding dark matter. We investigate what happens to oscillatory features during the process of nonlinear structure formation. We show that at the level of the power spectrum, oscillations are smoothed out by nonlinear mode coupling, gradually disappearing towards lower redshifts. In the halo mass function, however, the same oscillations remain visible until the present epoch. As a consequence, dark acoustic oscillations could be detectable in observations that are either based on the halo mass function or on the high-redshift power spectrum. We investigate the effect of such oscillations on different observables, namely, the cluster mass function, the stellar-to-halo mass relation, and the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux power spectrum. We find that dark acoustic oscillations remain visible in all of these observables, but they are very extended and of low amplitude, making it challenging to detect them as distinct features in the data., Comment: Published in MNRAS

Many late time approaches for the solution of the Hubble tension use late time smooth deformations of the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$ of the Planck18/$\Lambda$CDM best fit to match the locally measured value of $H_0$ while effectively keeping the comoving distance to the last scattering surface and $\Omega_{0m} h^2$ fixed to maintain consistency with Planck CMB measurements. A well known problem of these approaches is that they worsen the fit to low $z$ distance probes. Here we show that another problem of these approaches is that they worsen the level of the $\Omega_{0m}-\sigma_8$ growth tension. We use the generic class of CPL parametrizations corresponding to evolving dark energy equation of state parameter $w(z)=w_0+w_1\frac{z}{1+z}$ with local measurements $H_0$ prior and identify the pairs $(w_0, w_1)$ that satisfy this condition. This is a generic class of smooth deformations of $H(z)$ that are designed to address the Hubble tension. We show that for these models the growth tension between dynamical probe data and CMB constraints is worse than the corresponding tension of the standard Planck18/$\Lambda$CDM model. We justify this feature using a full numerical solution of the growth equation and fit to the data, as well as by using an approximate analytic approach. We explore the potential of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect as the cornerstone of a future observational probe for halo spin bias, the secondary dependence of halo clustering on halo spin at fixed halo mass. Using the IllustrisTNG magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, we measure both the kSZ and the thermal SZ (tSZ) effects produced by the baryonic content of more than 50,000 haloes within the halo mass range $11 < \log_{10} ({\rm M_{vir}}/ h^{-1} {\rm M_{\odot}}) \lesssim 14.5$. First, we confirm that the magnitude of both effects depends strongly on the total gas and virial mass of the haloes, and that the integrated kSZ signal displays a significant correlation with the angular momentum of the intra-halo gas, particularly for massive haloes. Second, we show that both the integrated kSZ signal and the ratio of the integrated kSZ and tSZ signals trace total halo spin, even though significant scatter exists. Finally, we demonstrate that, in the absence of observational and instrumental uncertainties, these SZ-related statistics can be used to recover most of the underlying IllustrisTNG halo spin bias signal. Recent studies of the effects on the Earth's atmosphere by astrophysical sources, such as nearby gamma-ray bursts or supernovae, have shown that these events could lead to severe changes in atmospheric composition. Depletion of ozone, the most notable of these changes, is extremely dangerous to living organisms as any decrease in ozone levels leads to an increase in the irradiance of harmful solar radiation at the Earth's surface. In this work we consider dark matter as an astrophysical source of gamma rays, by the annihilation and decay of WIMPs found within dark compact halo objects known as UltraCompact Minihaloes (UCMHs). We calculate the fluence of gamma rays produced in this way and simulate the resulting changes to terrestrial ozone levels using the Goddard Space Flight Center 2D Atmospheric Model. We also calculate the rate at which such events would occur, using estimates for the mass distribution of these haloes within the Milky Way. We find that the ozone depletion from UCMHs can be significant, and even of similar magnitude to the levels which have been linked to the cause of the Late-Ordovician mass extinction event. However, the probability of such encounters over the Earth's entire history is relatively low. This suggests that, while dark compact objects like UCMHs could have had an impact on the Earth's biosphere, other astrophysical phenomena like gamma-ray bursts or supernovae seem a more likely source of these effects., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Two types of distance measurement are important in cosmological observations, the angular diameter distance $d_A$ and the luminosity distance $d_L$. In the present work, we carried out an assessment of the theoretical relation between these two distance measurements, namely the cosmic distance duality relation, from type Ia supernovae (SN-Ia) data, the Cosmic Chronometer (CC) Hubble parameter data, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data using Gaussian Process. The luminosity distance curve and the angular diameter distance curve are extracted from the SN-Ia data and the combination of BAO and CC data respectively using the Gaussian Process. The distance duality relation is checked by a non-parametric reconstruction using the reconstructed $H$, $d_L$, and the volume-averaged distance $D_v$. We compare the results obtained for different choices of the covariance function employed in the Gaussian Process. It is observed that the theoretical distance duality relation is in well agreement with the present analysis in 2$\sigma$ for the overlapping redshift domain $0 \leq z \leq 2$ of the reconstruction., Comment: 10 pages, 8 sets of figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present radio observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and combine them with archival multi-frequency observations to understand whether ULIRGs are the progenitors of the powerful radio loud galaxies in the local Universe. ULIRGs are characterized by large infrared luminosities ($L_{IR}>$10$^{12}$L$\odot$), large dust masses ($\sim10^{8}M_{\odot}$) and vigorous star formation (star formation rates $\sim$10-100 $M_{\odot}~$yr$^{-1}$). Studies show that they represent the end stages of mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Their luminosity can be due to both starburst activity and active galactic nuclei (AGN). We study a sample of 13 ULIRGs that have optically identified AGN characteristics with 1.28~GHz GMRT observations. Our aim is to resolve any core-jet structures or nuclear extensions and hence examine whether the ULIRGs are evolving into radio loud ellipticals. Our deep, low frequency observations show marginal extension for only one source. However, the integrated radio spectra of 9 ULIRGs show characteristics that are similar to that of GPS/CSS/CSO/young radio sources. The estimated spectral ages are 0.4 to 20 Myr and indicate that they are young radio sources and possible progenitors of radio galaxies. Hence, we conclude that although most ULIRGs do not show kpc scale extended radio emission associated with nuclear activity, their radio spectral energy distributions do show signatures of young radio galaxies., 16 pages, 13 figures. We present a revised Spectral Adaptive Light Curve Template (SALT2) surface (SALT2-2021) for fitting the light curves of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), which incorporates new measurements of zero-point calibration offsets and Milky Way extinction. The most notable change in the new surface occurs in the UV region. This new surface alters the distance measurements of SNe Ia, which can be used to investigate the nature of dark energy by probing the expansion history of the Universe. Using the revised SALT2 surface on public data from the first 3 yr of the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (combined with an external low-z SNe Ia sample) and combining with cosmic microwave background constraints, we find a change in the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, Δw = 0.015 ± 0.004. This result highlights the continued importance of controlling and reducing systematic uncertainties, particularly with the next generation of supernova analyses aiming to improve constraints on dark energy properties.

The line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile of galaxy clusters exhibits a "kink" corresponding to the spatial extent of orbiting galaxies. Because the spatial extent of a cluster is correlated with the amplitude of the velocity dispersion profile, we can utilise this feature as a gravity-calibrated standard ruler. Specifically, the amplitude of the velocity dispersion data allows us to infer the physical cluster size. Consequently, observations of the angular scale of the "kink" in the profile can be translated into a distance measurement to the cluster. Assuming the relation between cluster radius and cluster velocity dispersion can be calibrated from simulations, we forecast that with existing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we will be able to measure the Hubble constant with $3\%$ precision. Implementing our method with data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will result in a $1.3\%$ measurement of the Hubble constant. Exploring the possibility that fundamental constants of Nature might vary temporally or spatially constitutes one of the key science drivers for the European Southern Observatory's ESPRESSO spectrograph on the VLT and for the HIRES spectrograph on the ELT. High-resolution spectra of quasar absorption systems permit accurate measurements of fundamental constants out to high redshifts. The quality of new data demands completely objective and reproducible methods. We have developed a new fully automated Artificial Intelligence-based method capable of deriving optimal models of even the most complex absorption systems known. The AI structure is built around VPFIT, a well-developed and extensively-tested non-linear least-squares code. The new method forms a sophisticated parallelised system, eliminating human decision-making and hence bias. Here we describe the workings of such a system and apply it to synthetic spectra, in doing so establishing methods of importance for future analyses of VLT and ELT data. The results show that modelling line broadening for high-redshift absorption components should include both thermal and turbulent components. Failing to do so means it is easy to derive the wrong model and hence incorrect parameter estimates. We also argue that model non-uniqueness can be significant, such that it is not feasible to expect to derive an unambiguous estimate of the fine structure constant alpha from one or a small number of measurements. We propose a deep-learning approach based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) to reduce noise in weak lensing mass maps under realistic conditions. We apply image-to-image translation using conditional GANs to the mass map obtained from the first-year data of Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. We train the conditional GANs by using 25000 mock HSC catalogues that directly incorporate a variety of observational effects. We study the non-Gaussian information in denoised maps using one-point probability distribution functions (PDFs) and also perform matching analysis for positive peaks and massive clusters. An ensemble learning technique with our GANs is successfully applied to reproduce the PDFs of the lensing convergence. About $60\%$ of the peaks in the denoised maps with height greater than $5\sigma$ have counterparts of massive clusters within a separation of 6 arcmin. We show that PDFs in the denoised maps are not compromised by details of multiplicative biases and photometric redshift distributions, nor by shape measurement errors, and that the PDFs show stronger cosmological dependence compared to the noisy counterpart. We apply our denoising method to a part of the first-year HSC data to show that the observed mass distribution is statistically consistent with the prediction from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 1 table. In this paper we present results from a radio-optical study of the galaxy populations of the galaxy clusters Abell 1300 and MACS J1931.8$-$2634, a merger and a relaxed system respectively both located at $z \sim 0.3$, aimed at finding evidence of merger-induced radio emission. Radio observations are taken at 1.28 GHz with the MeerKAT interferometer during its early-stage commissioning phase, and combined with archive optical data. We generated catalogues containing 107 and 162 radio sources in the A$~$1300 and MACS J1931.8--2634 cluster fields respectively, above a 0.2 mJy threshold and within a 30~arcmin radius from the cluster centre (corresponding to 8.1 and 8.8 Mpc respectively). By cross-correlating the radio and optical catalogues, and including spectroscopic information, 9 and 6 sources were found to be cluster members and used to construct the radio luminosity functions respectively for both clusters. The comparison of the radio source catalogues between the two cluster fields leads to a marginal difference, with a $2��$ statistical significance. We derived the radio luminosity function at 1.28 GHz in both clusters, in the power range $22.81 < \rm {log~P_{1.28~GHz}~(W/Hz)} < 25.95$, and obtained that in A 1300 the radio luminosity function averaged over the full radio power interval is only $3.3 \pm 1.9$ times higher than the MACS J1931.8--2634 one, suggesting no statistical difference in their probability to host nuclear radio emission. We conclude that, at least for the two clusters studied here, the role of cluster mergers in affecting the statistical properties of the radio galaxy population is negligible., 18 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepted

(DES Collaboration), We present and characterize the galaxy shape catalogue from the first 3 yr of Dark Energy Survey (DES) observations, over an effective area of 4143 deg2 of the southern sky. We describe our data analysis process and our self-calibrating shear measurement pipeline metacalibration, which builds and improves upon the pipeline used in the DES Year 1 analysis in several aspects. The DES Year 3 weak-lensing shape catalogue consists of 100 204 026 galaxies, measured in the riz bands, resulting in a weighted source number density of neff = 5.59 gal arcmin-2 and corresponding shape noise σe = 0.261. We perform a battery of internal null tests on the catalogue, including tests on systematics related to the point spread function (PSF) modelling, spurious catalogue B-mode signals, catalogue contamination, and galaxy properties., Based in part on observations at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory at NSF’s NOIRLab (NOIRLab Prop. We use Pantheon Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) apparent magnitude, DES-3yr binned SN Ia apparent magnitude, Hubble parameter, and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements to constrain six spatially flat and non-flat cosmological models. These sets of data provide mutually consistent cosmological constraints in the six cosmological models we study. A joint analysis of these data sets provides model-independent estimates of the Hubble constant, $H_0=68.8\pm1.8\ \rm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$, and the non-relativistic matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\rm m_0}=0.294\pm0.020$. Although the joint constraints prefer mild dark energy dynamics and a little spatial curvature, they do not rule out dark energy being a cosmological constant and flat spatial hypersurfaces. Galaxy lenses are frequently modeled as an elliptical mass distribution with external shear and isothermal spheres to account for secondary and line-of-sight galaxies. There is statistical evidence that some fraction of observed quads are inconsistent with these assumptions, and require a dipole-like contribution to the mass with respect to the light. Simplifying assumptions about the shape of mass distributions can lead to the incorrect recovery of parameters such as $H_0$. We create several tests of synthetic quad populations with different deviations from an elliptical shape, then fit them with an ellipse+shear model, and measure the recovered values of $H_0$. Kinematic constraints are not included. We perform two types of fittings -- one with a single point source and one with an array of sources emulating an extended source. We carry out two model-free comparisons between our mock quads and the observed population. One result of these comparisons is a statistical inconsistency not yet mentioned in the literature: the image distance ratios with respect to the lens center of observed quads appear to span a much wider range than those of synthetic or simulated quads. Bearing this discrepancy in mind, our mock populations can result in biases on $H_0$ $\sim10\%$., 15 pages, 5 figures; to be published in MNRAS

We examine the evolution of peculiar velocities of cold dark matter (CDM) in localized arrays of inhomogeneous cosmic structures in a $\Lambda$CDM background that can be identified as a frame comoving with the Cosmic Microwave (CMB). These arrays are constructed by smoothly matching to this cosmological background regions of Szekeres-II models whose source is an imperfect fluid reinterpreted as non-comoving dust, keeping only first order terms in $v/c$. Considering a single Szekeres-II region matched along two comoving interfaces to a $\Lambda$CDM background, the magnitudes of peculiar velocities within this region are compatible with values reported in the literature, while the present day Hubble expansion scalar differs from that of the $\Lambda$CDM background value by a 10\% factor, a result that might provide useful information to the ongoing debate on the $H_0$ tension. While the models cannot describe the virialization process, we show through a representative example that structures of galactic cluster mass reach the onset of this process at redshifts around $z\sim 3$., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We extend the basic formalism of mimetic-metric-torsion gravity theory, in a way that the mimetic scalar field can manifest itself geometrically as the source of not only the trace mode of torsion, but also its axial (or, pseudo-trace) mode. Specifically, we consider the mimetic field to be (i) coupled explicitly to the well-known Holst extension of the Riemann-Cartan action, and (ii) identified with the square of the associated Barbero-Immirzi field, which is presumed to be a pseudo-scalar. The conformal symmetry originally prevalent in the theory would still hold, as the associated Cartan transformations do not affect the torsion pseudo-trace, and hence the Holst term. Demanding the theory to preserve the spatial parity symmetry as well, we focus on a geometric unification of the cosmological dark sector, and show that a super-accelerating regime in the course of evolution of the universe is always feasible. From the observational perspective, assuming the cosmological evolution profile to be very close to that for $\L$CDM, we further show that there could be a smooth crossing of the so-called phantom barrier at a low red-shift, however for a very restricted parametric domain. We propose a method of searching for radio sources exhibiting the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in the multi-frequency emission maps from the Planck mission data using a convolutional neural network. A catalog for recognizing radio sources is compiled using the GLESP pixelation scheme at the frequencies of 100, 143, 217, 353, and 545 GHz. The quality of the proposed approach is evaluated and the quality of the dependence of model data on the S/N ratio is estimated. We show that the presented neural network approach allows the detection of sources with the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We investigate first order phase transitions in a holographic setting of five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field, constructing phase diagrams of the dual field theory at finite temperature. We scan over the two-dimensional parameter space of a simple bottom-up model and map out important quantities for the phase transition: the region where first order phase transitions take place; the latent heat, the transition strength parameter $\alpha$, and the stiffness. We find that $\alpha$ is generically in the range 0.1 to 0.3, and is strongly correlated with the stiffness (the square of the sound speed in a barotropic fluid). Using the LISA Cosmology Working Group gravitational wave power spectrum model corrected for kinetic energy suppression at large $\alpha$ and non-conformal stiffness, we outline the observational prospects at the future space-based detectors LISA and TianQin. \textsc{Hi} intensity mapping will provide maps of the large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen (\textsc{Hi}) in the universe. These are prime candidates to be used to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity using the Large Scale Structure of the Universe as well as to provide further tests of Einstein's theory of Gravity (GR). But \textsc{Hi} maps are contaminated by foregrounds, which can be several orders of magnitude above the cosmological signal. Here we quantify how degenerated are the large-scale effects ($f_{\rm NL}$ and GR effects) with the residual foregrounds. We conclude that a joint analysis does not provide a catastrophic degradation of constraints and provides a framework to determine the marginal errors of large scale-effects in the presence of foregrounds. Similarly, we conclude that the macroscopical properties of the foregrounds can be measured with high precision. Notwithstanding, such results are highly dependent on accurate forward modelling of the foregrounds, which incorrectly done catastrophically bias the best fit values of cosmological parameters, foreground parameterisations, and large-scale effects., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. We revisit the possibility of first order electroweak phase transition~(EWPT) in one of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model (SM) scalar sector, namely the two-Higgs-doublet model~(2HDM). We take into account the ensuing constraints from the electroweak precision tests, Higgs signal strengths, and the recent LHC bounds from direct scalar searches. Motivated by two seminal models proposed to explain the Universe acceleration, this paper is devoted to study a hybrid model which is constructed through a generalized Chaplygin gas with the addition of a bulk viscosity. We call the model a Viscous Generalized Chaplygin Gas (VGCG) and its free parameters are constrained through several cosmological data like the Observational Hubble Parameter, Type Ia Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, Strong Lensing Systems, HII Galaxies and using Joint Bayesian analysis. In addition, we implement a Om-diagnostic to analyze the VGCC dynamics and its difference with the standard cosmological model. The hybrid model shows important differences when compared with the standard cosmological model. Finally, based on our Joint analysis we find that the VGCG could be an interesting candidate to alleviate the well-known Hubble constant tension., Accepted for publication in EPJC

We investigate entropic force cosmological models with the possibility of matter creation and energy exchange between the bulk and the horizon of a homogeneous and an isotropic flat Universe. We consider three different kinds of entropy, Bekenstein's, the non-extensive Tsallis-Cirto's and the quartic entropy, plus some phenomenological functional forms for matter creation rate to model different entropic force models and put the observational constraints on them. We show that while most of them are basically indistinguishable from a standard $\Lambda$CDM scenario, the Bekenstein entropic force model with a matter creation rate proportional to the Hubble parameter is statistically highly favored over $\Lambda$CDM. As a general result, we also find that both the Hawking temperature parameter $\gamma$, which relates the energy exchange between the bulk and the boundary of the Universe, and the matter creation rate $\Gamma(t)$, must be very small in order to reproduce observational data., Comment: 13 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure, discussion updated, new references added

We put forward a pressure-parametric model to study the tiny deviation from cosmological constant(CC) behavior of the dark sector accelerating the expansion of the Universe. Data from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) observation are applied to constrict the model parameters. The constraint results show that such model suffers with $H_0$ tension as well. In self-gravitating $N$-body systems, small perturbations introduced at the start, or infinitesimal errors that are produced by the numerical integrator or are due to limited precision in the computer, grow exponentially with time. For Newton's gravity, we confirm earlier results that for relatively homogeneous systems, this rate of growth per crossing time increases with $N$ up to $N \sim 30$, but that for larger systems, the growth rate has a weaker scaling with $N$. For concentrated systems, however, the rate of exponential growth continues to scale with $N$. In relativistic self-gravitating systems, the rate of growth is almost independent of $N$. This effect, however, is only noticeable when the system's mean velocity approaches the speed of light to within three orders of magnitude. The chaotic behavior of systems with more than a dozen bodies for the usually adopted approximation of only solving the pairwise interactions in the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equation of motion is qualitatively different than when the interaction terms (or cross terms) are taken into account. This result provides a strong motivation for follow-up studies on the microscopic effect of general relativity on orbital chaos, and on the influence of higher-order cross-terms in the Taylor-series expansion of the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equations of motion., A&A in press

Recent experiments searching for sub−GeV/c2 dark matter have observed event excesses close to their respective energy thresholds. Although specific to the individual technologies, the measured excess event rates have been consistently reported at or below event energies of a few-hundred eV, or with charges of a few electron-hole pairs. In the present work, we operated a 1-g silicon SuperCDMS-HVeV detector at three voltages across the crystal (0, 60 and 100 V). The 0 V data show an excess of events in the tens of eV region. Despite this event excess, we demonstrate the ability to set a competitive exclusion limit on the spin-independent dark matter–nucleon elastic scattering cross section for dark matter masses of O(100) MeV/c2, enabled by operation of the detector at 0 V potential and achievement of a very low O(10) eV threshold for nuclear recoils. Comparing the data acquired at 0, 60 and 100 V potentials across the crystal, we investigated possible sources of the unexpected events observed at low energy. The data indicate that the dominant contribution to the excess is consistent with a hypothesized luminescence from the printed circuit boards used in the detector holder.

The recent analysis of low-redshift supernovae (SN) has increased the apparent tension between the value of $H_0$ estimated from low and high redshift observations such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. At the same time other observations have provided evidence of the existence of local radial inhomogeneities extending in different directions up to a redshift of about $0.07$. About $40\%$ of the Cepheids used for SN calibration are directly affected because are located along the directions of these inhomogeneities. We derive a new simple formula relating directly the luminosity distance to the monopole of the density contrast, which does not involve any metric perturbation. We then use it to develop a new inversion method to reconstruct the monopole of the density field from the deviations of the redshift uncorrected observed luminosity distance respect to the $\Lambda CDM$ prediction based on cosmological parameters obtained from large scale observations. The inversion method confirms the existence of inhomogeneities whose effects were not previously taken into account because the $2M++$ density field maps used to obtain the peculiar velocity for redshift correction were for $z\leq 0.06$, which is not a sufficiently large scale to detect the presence of inhomogeneities extending up to $z=0.07$. The inhomogeneity does not affect the high redshift luminosity distance because the volume averaged density contrast tends to zero asymptotically, making the value of $H_0^{CMB}$ obtained from CMB observations insensitive to any local structure. The inversion method can provide a unique tool to reconstruct the density field at high redshift where only SN data is available, and in particular to normalize correctly the density field respect to the average large scale density of the Universe., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, published in IJMPD

Rosell, A., et al. (DES Collaboration), In this paper, we present and validate the galaxy sample used for the analysis of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Y3 data. The definition is based on a colour and redshift-dependent magnitude cut optimized to select galaxies at redshifts higher than 0.5, while ensuring a high-quality determination. The sample covers ~4100 deg2 to a depth of i = 22.3 (AB) at 10s. It contains 7031 993 galaxies in the redshift range from z = 0.6 to 1.1, with a mean effective redshift of 0.835. Redshifts are estimated with the machine learning algorithm DNF, and are validated using the VIPERS PDR2 sample. We find a mean redshift bias of zbias~0.01 and a mean uncertainty, in units of 1 + z, of σ68~0.03. We evaluate the galaxy population of the sample, showing it is mostly built upon Elliptical to Sbc types. Furthermore, we find a low level of stellar contamination of ≤ 4 per cent. We present the method used to mitigate the effect of spurious clustering coming from observing conditions and other large-scale systematics.We apply it to the BAO sample and calculate weights that are used to get a robust estimate of the galaxy clustering signal. Magnetic monopoles have a long history of theoretical predictions and experimental searches, carrying direct implications for fundamental concepts such as electric charge quantization. We analyze in detail for the first time magnetic monopole production from collisions of cosmic rays bombarding the atmosphere. This source of monopoles is independent of cosmology, has been active throughout Earth's history, and supplies an irreducible monopole flux for all terrestrial experiments. Using results for robust atmospheric fixed target experiment flux of monopoles, we systematically establish direct comparisons of previous ambient monopole searches with monopole searches at particle colliders and set leading limits on magnetic monopole production in the $\sim 5-100$ TeV mass-range., 8 pages, 4 figures; v2: matches version accepted to PRL

It is important to map the large-scale matter distribution in the local Universe for cosmological studies, such as the tracing of the large-scale peculiar velocity flow, the characterisation of the environment for different astronomical objects, and for precision measurements of cosmological parameters. We used X-ray luminous clusters to map this matter distribution and find that about 51% of the groups and clusters are members of superclusters which occupy only a few percent of the volume. In this paper we provide a detailed description of these large-scale structures. With a friends-to-friends algorithm, we find eight superclusters with a cluster overdensity ratio of at least two with five or more galaxy group and cluster members in the cosmic volume out to z = 0.03. The four most prominent ones are the Perseus-Pisces, the Centaurus, the Coma, and the Hercules supercluster, with lengths from about 40 to over 100 Mpc and estimated masses of 0.6 - 2.2 10^16 Msun. The largest of these structures is the Perseus-Pisces supercluster. The four smaller superclusters include the Local and the Abell 400 supercluster and two superclusters in the constellations Sagittarius and Lacerta. We provide detailed maps, member catalogues, and physical descriptions of the eight superclusters. We consider the effective field theory of gravity around black holes, and show that the coefficients of the dimension-8 operators are tightly constrained by causality considerations. Those constraints are consistent with -- but tighter than -- previously derived causality and positivity bounds and imply that the effects of one of the dimension-8 operators by itself cannot be observable while remaining consistent with causality. We then establish in which regime one can expect the generic dimension-8 and lower order operators to be potentially observable while preserving causality, providing a theoretical prior for future observations. We present a cosmological model arising from a gravitational theory with an infinite tower of higher-order curvature invariants that can reproduce the entire evolution of the Universe: from inflation to late-time acceleration, without invoking an inflaton nor a cosmological constant. The theory is Einsteinian-like. The field equations for a Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker metric are of second-order and can reproduce a late-time evolution that is consistent with the acceleration provided by the cosmological constant at low redshift. We propose a two-component dark matter explanation to the EDGES 21 cm anomalous signal. The heavier dark matter component is long-lived whose decay is primarily responsible for the relic abundance of the lighter dark matter which is millicharged. To evade the constraints from CMB, underground dark matter direct detection, and XQC experiments, the lifetime of the heavier dark matter has to be larger than $0.1\, \tau_U$, where $\tau_U$ is the age of the universe. Our model provides a viable realization of the millicharged dark matter model to explain the EDGES 21 cm, since the minimal model in which the relic density is generated via thermal freeze-out is ruled out by various constraints., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

The classical gravitational force on a torus is anisotropic and always lower than Newton’s 1/r2 law. We demonstrate the effects of periodicity in dark matter only N-body simulations of spherical collapse and standard Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) initial conditions. Periodic boundary conditions cause an overall negative and anisotropic bias in cosmological simulations of cosmic structure formation. The lower amplitude of power spectra of small periodic simulations is a consequence of the missing large-scale modes and the equally important smaller periodic forces. The effect is most significant when the largest mildly non-linear scales are comparable to the linear size of the simulation box, as often is the case for high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. Spherical collapse morphs into a shape similar to an octahedron. The anisotropic growth distorts the large-scale ΛCDM dark matter structures. We introduce the direction-dependent power spectrum invariant under the octahedral group of the simulation volume and show that the results break spherical symmetry.

We introduce Z-Sequence, a novel empirical model that utilises photometric measurements of observed galaxies within a specified search radius to estimate the photometric redshift of galaxy clusters. Z-Sequence itself is composed of a machine learning ensemble based on the k-nearest neighbours algorithm. We implement an automated feature selection strategy that iteratively determines appropriate combinations of filters and colours to minimise photometric redshift prediction error. We intend for Z-Sequence to be a standalone technique but it can be combined with cluster finders that do not intrinsically predict redshift, such as our own DEEP-CEE. In this proof-of-concept study we train, fine-tune and test Z-Sequence on publicly available cluster catalogues derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine the photometric redshift prediction error of Z-Sequence via the median value of $|\Delta z|/(1+z)$ (across a photometric redshift range of $0.05 \le \textit{z} \le 0.6$) to be $\sim0.01$ when applying a small search radius. The photometric redshift prediction error for test samples increases by 30-50 per cent when the search radius is enlarged, likely due to line-of-sight interloping galaxies. Most of the dark matter (DM) search over the last few decades has focused on WIMPs, but the viable parameter space is quickly shrinking. Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM) is a WIMP-like DM candidate with slightly smaller masses and no present day annihilation, meaning that stars can capture and build up large quantities. The captured ADM can transport energy through a significant volume of the star. We investigate the effects of spin-dependent ADM energy transport on stellar structure and evolution in stars with $0.9 \leq M_{\star}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \leq 5.0$ in varying DM environments. We wrote a MESA module that calculates the capture of DM and the subsequent energy transport within the star. We fix the DM mass to 5 GeV and the cross section to $10^{-37} \mathrm{cm{^2}}$, and study varying environments by scaling the DM capture rate. For stars with radiative cores ($M_{\star} \lesssim 1.3\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$), the presence of ADM flattens the temperature and burning profiles in the core and increases MS ($X_c > 10^{-3}$) lifetimes by up to $\sim 20\%$. We find that strict requirements on energy conservation are crucial to the simulation of ADM's effects on these stars. In higher-mass stars, ADM energy transport shuts off core convection, limiting available fuel and shortening MS lifetimes by up to $\sim 40\%$. This may translate to changes in the luminosity and effective temperature of the MS turnoff in population isochrones. The tip of the red giant branch may occur at lower luminosities. Energetic electrons in the lobes of radio galaxies make them potential sources for not only radio and X-rays but also Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) distortions in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Previous works have discussed the energetics of radio galaxy lobes, but assuming thermal SZ effect, coming from the non-thermal electron population. We use an improved evolutionary model for radio galaxy lobes to estimate the observed parameters such as the radio luminosity and intensity of SZ-distortions at the redshifts of observation. We, further, quantify the effects of various relevant physical parameters of the radio galaxies, such as the jet power, the time scale over which the jet is active, the evolutionary time scale for the lobe, etc on the observed parameters. For current SZ observations towards galaxy clusters, we find that the non-thermal SZ distortions from radio lobes embedded in galaxy clusters can be non-negligible compared to the amount of thermal SZ distortion from the intra-cluster medium and, hence, can not be neglected. We show that small and young (and preferably residing in a cluster environment) radio galaxies offer better prospects for the detection of the non-thermal SZ signal from these sources. We further discuss the limits on different physical parameters for some sources for which SZ effect has been either detected or upper limits are available. The evolutionary models enable us to obtain limits, previously unavailable, on the low energy cut-off of electron spectrum ($p_{min} \sim 1\hbox{--}2$) in order to explain the recent non-thermal SZ detection. Finally, we discuss how future CMB experiments, which would cover higher frequency bands ($>$400 GHz), may provide clear signatures for non-thermal SZ effect., Replaced with published version

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) team has derived new upper limits on the spherically averaged power spectrum of the 21-cm signal at six redshifts in the range $z \approx 6.5-8.7$. We use these upper limits and a Bayesian inference framework to derive constraints on the ionization and thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as well as on the strength of a possible additional radio background. We do not find any constraints on the state of the IGM for $z\gtrsim 7.8$ if no additional radio background is present. In the presence of such a radio background, the 95 per cent credible intervals of the disfavoured models at redshift $\gtrsim 6.5 $ correspond to an IGM with a volume averaged fraction of ionized regions below 0.6 and an average gas temperature $\lesssim 10^3$ K. In these models, the heated regions are characterised by a temperature larger than that of the radio background, and by a distribution with characteristic size $\lesssim 10$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\lesssim 30$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc. Future large scale structure surveys will measure the locations and shapes of billions of galaxies. The precision of such catalogs will require meticulous treatment of systematic contamination of the observed fields. We compare several existing methods for removing such systematics from galaxy clustering measurements. We show how all the methods, including the popular pseudo-$C_\ell$ Mode Projection and Template Subtraction methods, can be interpreted under a common regression framework and use this to suggest improved estimators. We show how methods designed to mitigate systematics in the power spectrum can be used to produce clean maps, which are necessary for cosmological analyses beyond the power spectrum, and we extend current methods to treat the next-order multiplicative contamination in observed maps and power spectra. Two new mitigation methods are proposed, which incorporate desirable features of current state-of-the-art methods while being simpler to implement. Investigating the performance of all the methods on a common set of simulated measurements from Year 5 of the Dark Energy Survey, we test their robustness to various analysis cases. Our proposed methods produce improved maps and power spectra when compared to current methods, while requiring almost no user tuning. We carry out ``full-physics'' hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation in the normal-branch Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) braneworld model using a new modified version of the {\sc Arepo} code and the IllustrisTNG galaxy formation model. We simulate two nDGP models (N5 and N1) which represent, respectively, weak and moderate departures from GR, in boxes of sizes $62\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ and $25\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ using $2\times512^3$ dark matter particles and initial gas cells. This allows us to explore, for the first time, the impact of baryonic physics on galactic scales in braneworld models of modified gravity and to make predictions on the stellar content of dark matter haloes and galaxy evolution through cosmic time in these models. We find significant differences between the GR and nDGP models in the power spectra and correlation functions of gas, stars and dark matter of up to $\sim 25$ per cent on large scales. Similar to their impact in the standard cosmological model ($\Lambda$CDM), baryonic effects can have a significant influence over the clustering of the overall matter distribution, with a sign that depends on scale. Studying the degeneracy between modified gravity and galactic feedback in these models, we find that these two physical effects on matter clustering can be cleanly disentangled, allowing for a method to accurately predict the matter power spectrum with baryonic effects included, without having to run hydrodynamical simulations. Depending on the braneworld model, we find differences compared with GR of up to $\sim15$ per cent in galaxy properties such as the stellar-to-halo-mass ratio, galaxy stellar mass function, gas fraction and star formation rate density. The amplitude of the fifth force is reduced by the presence of baryons in the very inner part of haloes, but this reduction quickly becomes negligible above $\sim0.1$ times the halo radius., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, matches with published version

Several recent studies have indicated that artificial subhalo disruption (the spontaneous, non-physical disintegration of a subhalo) remains prevalent in state-of-the-art dark matter-only cosmological simulations. In order to quantify the impact of disruption on the inferred subhalo demographics, we augment the semi-analytical SatGen dynamical subhalo evolution model with an improved treatment of tidal stripping that is calibrated using the DASH database of idealized high-resolution simulations of subhalo evolution, which are free from artificial disruption. We also develop a model of artificial disruption that reproduces the statistical properties of disruption in the Bolshoi simulation. Using this framework, we predict subhalo mass functions (SHMFs), number density profiles, and substructure mass fractions and study how these quantities are impacted by artificial disruption and mass resolution limits. We find that artificial disruption affects these quantities at the $10-20\%$ level, ameliorating previous concerns that it may suppress the SHMF by as much as a factor of two. We demonstrate that semi-analytical substructure modeling must include orbit integration in order to properly account for splashback haloes, which make up roughly half of the subhalo population. We show that the resolution limit of $N$-body simulations, rather than artificial disruption, is the primary cause of the radial bias in subhalo number density found in dark matter-only simulations. Hence, we conclude that the mass resolution remains the primary limitation of using such simulations to study subhaloes. Our model provides a fast, flexible, and accurate alternative to studying substructure statistics in the absence of both numerical resolution limits and artificial disruption., 18 pages, 11 figures. We consider a primordial black hole of very high mass, $10^9-10^{10}M_\odot$, surrounded by dark matter and barionic halo at redshifts $z\sim20$ without any local sources of energy release. Such heavy and concentrated objects in the early universe were previously called ``cosmological dinosaurs''. Spectral distribution and spatial variation of the brightness in the 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen are calculated with the theory of radiation transfer. It is shown that a narrow and deep absorption arises in the form of the spherical shell around the primordial black hole at the certain radius. The continuous flow of gas and dark matter across scales in the cosmic web can generate correlated dynamical properties of haloes and filaments (and the magnetic fields they contain). With this work, we study the halo spin properties and orientation with respect to filaments, and the morphology of the magnetic field around these objects, for haloes with masses in the range 1e8-1e14 Msun and filaments up to 8 Mpc long. Furthermore, we study how these properties vary in presence, or lack thereof, of different (astro)physical processes and with different magnetic initial conditions. We perform cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations with the Eulerian code Enzo and we develop a simple and robust algorithm to study the filamentary connectivity of haloes in three dimensions. We investigate the morphological and magnetic properties and focus on the alignment of the magnetic field along filaments: our analysis suggests that the degree of this alignment is partially dependent on the physical processes involved, as well as on magnetic initial conditions. We discuss the contribution of this effect on a potential attempt to detect the magnetic field surrounding these objects: we find that it introduces a bias in the estimation of the magnetic field from Faraday rotation measure techniques. Specifically, given the strong tendency we find for extragalactic magnetic fields to align with the filaments axis, the value of the magnetic field can be underestimated by a factor 3, because this effect contributes to making the line-of-sight magnetic field (for filaments in the plane of the sky) much smaller than the total one., 16 pages, 21 figures

Dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters have long played a role in galaxy cluster studies because it is thought their properties can be reconstructed more precisely and with less systematics. As relaxed clusters are desirable, there exist a plethora of criteria for classifying a galaxy cluster as relaxed. In this work, we examine $9$ commonly used observational and theoretical morphological metrics extracted from $54,000$ Mock-X synthetic X-ray images of galaxy clusters taken from the IllustrisTNG, BAHAMAS and MACSIS simulation suites. We find that the simulated criteria distributions are in reasonable agreement with the observed distributions. Many criteria distributions evolve as a function of redshift, cluster mass, numerical resolution and subgrid physics, limiting the effectiveness of a single relaxation threshold value. All criteria are positively correlated with each other, however, the strength of the correlation is sensitive to redshift, mass and numerical choices. Driven by the intrinsic scatter inherent to all morphological metrics and the arbitrary nature of relaxation threshold values, we find the consistency of relaxed subsets defined by the different metrics to be relatively poor. The void ellipticity distribution today can be well explained by the tidal field. Going a step further from the overall distribution, we investigate individuality on the tidal response of void shape in non-linear dynamical evolution. We perform an N-body simulation and trace individual voids using particle ID. The voids are defined based on Voronoi tessellation and watershed algorithm, using public code VIDE. A positive correlation is found between the time variation of void ellipticity and tidal field around a void if the void maintains its constituent particles. Such voids tend to have smaller mass densities. Conversely, not a few voids significantly deform by particle exchange, rather than the tidal field. Those voids may prevent us from correctly proving a quadrupole field of gravity out of a void shape., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

There are well-known criteria on the potential and field-space geometry for determining if slow-roll, slow-turn, multi-field inflation is possible. However, even though it has been a topic of much recent interest, slow-roll, rapid-turn inflation only has such criteria in the restriction to two fields. In this work, we generalize the two-field, rapid-turn inflationary attractor to an arbitrary number of fields. We quantify a limit, which we dub extreme turning, in which rapid-turn solutions may be found efficiently and develop methods to do so. In particular, simple results arise when the covariant Hessian of the potential has an eigenvector in close alignment with the gradient -- a situation we find to be common and we prove generic in two-field hyperbolic geometries. We verify our methods on several known rapid-turn models and search two type-IIA constructions for rapid-turn trajectories. For the first time, we are able to efficiently search for these solutions and even exclude slow-roll, rapid-turn inflation from one potential., 30 pages, 8 figures. v2: added missed references

Boltzmann equation plays important roles in particle cosmology in studying the evolution of distribution functions (also called as occupation numbers) of various particles. For the case of the decay of a scalar condensation $\phi$ into a pair of scalar particles (called $\chi$), we point out that the system may not be well described by the Boltzmann equation when the occupation number of $\chi$ becomes large even in the so-called narrow resonance regime. We study the particle production including the possible enhancement due to a large occupation number of the final state particle, known as the stimulated emission or the parametric resonance. Based on the quantum field theory (QFT), we derive a set of equations which directly govern the evolution of the distribution function of $\chi$. Comparing the results of the QFT calculation and those from the Boltzmann equation, we find non-agreements in some cases. In particular, in the expanding Universe, the occupation number of $\chi$ based on the QFT may differ by many orders of magnitude from that from the Boltzmann equation.
