This paper focuses on the development of library webpages available on Engineering websites in the state of Maharashtra. In an information age/era, for any college library, its webpages integral part as central facility that the students and staffs need resources for curriculum and research works. Depending on survey and study of engineering websites throught out in Maharashtra it is tried to search information regarding various resources and library services provided. It searches all data informatics of available books, Printed journals, E-book, E-journals, Project reports, Doctoral research thesis, Reference books, Journals and periodicals, News papers, CD/DVDs , Videos , etc. Main purpose is to find out whether all details resources of library webpage are available on Engineering college websites or not.

This study aims to determine the process of procurement of library materials at the Regional Library and Archives Service of Muaro Jambi Regency. The research method used is library research methodologically classified as qualitative research with a descriptive approach in the form of a case study which aims to explain the procurement of library materials at the Regional Library and Archives Service of Muaro Jambi Regency. Data collection techniques used were through observation and interviews. The findings of the study are (1) the Regional Library and Archives Office of Muaro Jambi Regency has carried out library material procurement activities through purchases from book agents, bookstores, gifts, entrances and through assistance once a year. (2) The Regional Library and Archives Office of Muaro Jambi Regency has never procured serial publications, as well as non-book materials (recorded works) because according to them library materials are rarely needed by users. (3) The procurement of library funds for library materials is not running properly as seen from the constraints that occur, namely the lack of spending funds for the procurement of library materials both from series published library materials and recorded library materials, as well as the lack of attention from leaders leading to the procurement of library materials so that the available collections incomplete, not up to date and not used by the user. From these findings, it is hoped that the Regional Library and Archives Office of Muaro Jambi Regency will continue to procure collections of serial publications and recorded works because these collections can increase the number of collections available, create public interest in reading and add to the repertoire of library collections. Furthermore, the Regional Library and Archives Service of Muaro Jambi Regency should process funds properly by paying attention to user needs so that library materials purchased are in accordance with user education. Then also the head of the library must pay more attention that leads to the procurement of library materials so that the available collections can be more up to date, complete, and can be used by users. Purpose The purpose this study was to determine currency of print health materials readily available in North Carolina public libraries, through a statewide assessment. Two subject areas were examined: health reference and diabetes. Design/methodology/approach In total, 30 randomly selected public libraries were visited and unobtrusive stacks assessments were completed. Some months later, the libraries’ websites were examined for collection development policies, and online catalogs were searched using the keyword diabetes to identify possible discrepancies and additions. Findings For visits, publication dates for reference books ranged from 1899-2014 and the average number of holdings was 10 (range 0-30). The most common reference item, the AMA Family Medical Guide (2005), was available in 6 of 30 libraries. In diabetes collections, publication dates ranged from 1983-2013; the average number of books was nine (range 0-26). The Atkins Diabetes Revolution (2004) was the most common, available in 9 of 30 libraries. Two-thirds of libraries did not have a collection development policy online. Catalog searches revealed 10 titles prior to 1983 and 18 titles (non-cook books) from 2014-2016. Practical implications The study found overall that print health reference books were outdated. In diabetes collections, there were also many outdated items. It appears that regular weeding to assure currency of print health literature is not taking place. Originality/value The study demonstrates that public libraries may not be providing optimal print health information. With unprecedented access, it is imperative that librarians in all types of settings aid in health literacy promotion by assuring access to reliable and timely health information.

Introduction. Procurement of library collections must be effective and efficient. So far, it has been assumed that IPB University students prefer to use Indonesian books, but from some observations on books collection, quite a lot of Indonesian books’ due date slips are blank. This means that the book was never borrowed by the user. One way to measure the usability of a collection is to use citation analysis. Objectives. This study aims to 1) determine the availability of Indonesian language books cited in the undergraduate theses of the Faculty of Agriculture IPB University 2015-2019 in the collection of the IPB University Library; 2) identify Indonesian language books that are widely used by students of IPB University, Faculty of Agriculture in writing undergraduate theses 2015-2019; 3) knowing the average age of obsolescence of Indonesian language books cited in the 2015-2019 IPB University, Faculty of Agriculture undergraduate theses; 4) find out which Indonesian language book publishers are cited the most by the 2015-2019 Faculty of Agriculture undergraduate theses. Methods. This research is a quantitative research, using one of the bibliometric methods, namely citation analysis. Data collection is done by observing the bibliography in each undergraduate thesis, all Indonesian books in the bibliography will be recorded on an Excel-based note sheet. Results. The results showed that Indonesian language books cited in the undergraduate theses of the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University 2015-2019 were available in the collections of the IPB University Library as much as 18.0 % for the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources, 22.0 % for the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, 22.0 % for the Department of Plant Protection and 16.0 % for the Department of Landscape Architecture. The most cited books by undergraduate theses at the Faculty of Agriculture are “Soil and Water Conservation” for the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources, “Plant Breeding Techniques” for the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, “Pesticides and Their Applications” for the Department of Plant Protection, and “Garden Maintenance” for the Department of Landscape Architecture. The obsolescence of the cited books is between 12-15 years. The publishers whose books have been cited the most are Gadjah Mada University Press, Kanisius and Penebar Swadaya.

Mbooks are open-access, digitized books freely available on the Internet. This article describes the Auraria Library's experience of loading brief MARC records for Mbooks into its online public access catalog and looks at some of the issues that arose from the record-loading project. Despite the low quality of the records, librarians in Auraria Library thought that loading them into the catalog was advantageous because of the rich content in the collection and because many of the records could be improved using the global update functionality in the catalog. Making the records available through the catalog, as opposed to merely linking to the entire collection from the Library's Web page, was considered to be valuable because of the aggregation a catalog provides and because the Mbooks collection helped fill gaps in the Library's physical collections. As more open-access, digitized books become available, libraries will need to plan and manage how best to provide access to them.

In 2018, the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries upgraded from a tired, twenty-year-old basement space to a new, purpose-built conservation lab for library and archives collections. The new conservation lab, which is housed in the special collections and archives library, quadrupled available lab space for its conservators and fleet of student employees. The move afforded Conservation space in the same library as the most vulnerable collection materials. In addition, rooms in the special collections and archives library were repurposed for audiovisual (AV) preservation, creating two new spaces for film and video workflows and upgrading an existing small audio room. This paper will discuss the conservation and preservation lab construction literature and will serve as a practical exemplar of the challenges and successes of the planning process, including lessons learned and unexpected benefits.

The publication coincides with the 90-th anniversary of the Sci-tech Library of Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University. The history of the Library is described; the Library was established as a result of merging several universities, in particular it comprises the collections of Warsaw Emperor Nickolas II Polytechnic Institute. The Library’s collections have been supporting educational and research activities of the University. The continuing process of collection development is based on modern technologies which meets the user demands.The most recent data on library services, collections and users is provided. The library processes are computer-based; the e-catalog and e-library databases are available. The library collections support the learning process in 1,623 courses and disciplines. The role of the library in the educational process and university’s research programs is emphasized. The library environment has become more comfortable for the users.The Library contributes to cultural and social activities and to students’ personal development and social adaptation, humanistic education of the young adults. Innovative activities are described.The author concludes that the Sci-tech library plays a significant role in educational, research and social processes and offers its users various and relevant information products and services.

The article highlights the first stage of creating a specialized collection (section) “For Library Professionals” on the portal of the National Electronic Library (NEL). The last decade’s trend has been a reduction in the number of titles of professional library publications, and a drop in their average circulation. In these conditions, the issue of providing library and information specialists with relevant scientific, practical and reference literature has become urgent. One of the ways to solve the problem is creating electronic collections of professional library literature. The article analyzes the Russian State Library’s experience in this area since the early 2000s. Currently, the special collection “For Library Professionals” is available on the basis of the National Electronic Library, a key library and information project of recent years. The collection has been accessible since July 2019. At the beginning of 2020, this section included about 1,5 thousand documents of different types (monographs, indexes, textbooks and manuals, collected scientific articles, proceedings of scientific conferences, periodical materials, etc.). At the end of 2 019, a survey w as conducted on the feasibility of maintaining a professional library collection in the NEL, which was attended by about 700 professionals in the area. The article analyzes the results of this survey, which indicate the demand for such electronic collections of professional library literature and show the priority topics demanded by library employees and expectations in the field of search capabilities.

This article describes publications available in French in the collections of the National Library of Uzbekistan named after Alisher Navoi. Information about the author, publications and the state of preservation of French sources is interpreted in terms of periods that briefly describe the culture and history of the Central Asian region. Classical Oriental studies are conducted in France to study Central Asia, as well as scientific and practical expeditions, the results of which are widely commented on in French. In addition to their scientific and spiritual value, these sources have also been identified as playing an important role in the study of our country’s history

Terkko Health Hub is a startup community, a co-working area and an event space focused on health and life sciences. The Meilahti Campus Library of Helsinki University Library also operate in the Hub. A library is an important meeting place and learning environment. In the library, you will meet people and the feeling of belonging to a university community is amplified. The co-operation with Terkko Health Hub started when the library removed part of the printed collection and freed space was available for alternative use. We were satisfied and excited on the campus about the new collaboration.

The Latin American Library (LAL) at Tulane University is the repository for the Louis J. Boeri and Minín Bujones Boeri Collection of Cuban American Radionovelas (hereafter, Radionovelas Collection). The physical collection contains 8,934 individual reel-to-reel tapes containing audio recordings produced by Boeri’s Miami-based America’s Production Inc. (API). Boeri founded API in 1961 to create and license radio programming to serve an expanding commercial market of Spanish-language audiences across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Boeri employed some of the best writing, acting, musical, and technical talent in the business, most of whom were recent emigres from Cuba, the wider Caribbean, and Mexico. API’s radio soap operas went silent after the company closed in 1970 and as the listening public and commercial sponsors increasingly turned to television for serialized entertainment. The LAL began a multiphase initiative in 2015 to digitize its aged audio tapes. With generous support from the Latin American Research Resources Project (LARRP) of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), the LAL converted one third of the collection’s audio recordings to digital. Beginning in 2020, forty-one of API’s “soaps,” most in their entirety, are accessible via a digital collection in the Tulane University Digital Library (TUDL). Available in the digital collection are programs that span multiple genres with titles like Agente Secreto 009 [Secret Agent 009]; La Hora de Misterio [Mystery Hour]; and Amarga Espera [Bitter Awaiting]. API print materials including advertising, program catalogs, and company photographs will also appear in digital. The Radionovelas Collection offers new perspectives and insights into the use of media for Cold War political and cultural propaganda by Cuba and the United States. It also provides a public resource to engage with and research the history of popular culture, sonic literature, and mass media among Spanish-speaking audiences all over the world.

The aim of the present study is to assess the user opinion about the library collections and services in the arts and Science College in Coimbatore. The researcher has circulated three hundred questionnaires to selected respondents on the basis of the convent sampling method. Out of the three hundred questionnaires, two hundred and seventy questionnaires were received with the required information. The study found that the majority of the respondents gave a very good opinion about the library collection, services and facilities available in the selected arts and science colleges in Coimbatore.

Digital collections, institutional repositories, open educational resources, open access publishing, and new forms of digital scholarship are all ways in which academic libraries are growing their collections from the inside out as well as making this content widely available to other libraries and users. This article will explore national and global trends in library-enabled publishing and content creation, focusing on the kinds of collections being published by libraries, the ways that metadata can bring these collections together for improved access, and the role of consortia in the process.

The present study examines the user perception about the library collection and services in the Cherraan’s College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore. Two hundred questionnaires were distributed to the students of Cherraan’s College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore. Out of the 200 questionnaires, one hundred and fifty questionnaires were received with full details. The result of study indicates that majority of users aware about the library collection and services available in the college. E-resources provided by Dr.M.G.R. Medical University and Bentham e-journals are preferred by the majority of the respondents.

An intriguing new opportunity for research into the nineteenth-century history of print culture, libraries, and local communities is performing full-text analyses on the corpus of books held by a specific library or group of libraries. Creating corpora using books that are known to have been owned by a given library at a given point in time is potentially feasible because digitized records of the books in several hundred nineteenth-century library collections are available in the form of scanned book catalogs: a book or pamphlet listing all of the books available in a particular library. However, there are two potential problems with using those book catalogs to create corpora. First, it is not clear whether most or all of the books that were in these collections have been digitized. Second, the prospect of identifying the digital representations of the books listed in the catalogs is daunting, given the diversity of cataloging practices at the time. This article will report on progress towards developing an automated method to match entries in early nineteenth-century book catalogs with digitized versions of those books, and will also provide estimates of the fractions of the library holdings that have been digitized and made available in the Google Books/HathiTrust corpus.

Given the increasing costs of student textbooks, it is only natural that students would engage in cost-avoidance behaviors. Likewise, some professors have modified their curricular choices to avoid passing along the cost of required texts for their students. At the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the library has licensed several databases that include access to a number of assigned student textbooks. While the provision of these textbooks was not the intent in the licensing of these resources, it is an added benefit of the subscription and their availability is appreciated by the students who may avoid individual purchases. Because there has been no effort on the part of the library to license resources for the purpose of providing access to textbooks, students in certain programs have access to many assigned texts while students in other programs have access to no textbooks at all. Using an adapted version of a previously created survey, faculty were asked questions about currently licensed platforms, the selection of course textbooks, and the importance of textbook availability. The purpose of the survey was to gauge faculty members’ level of knowledge and interest in expanding the course textbook offerings available through the library’s electronic collections. Proposed future actions include expanding textbooks offerings, exploring potential funding streams to support the expansion, and involving librarians in curricular development and textbook selection.

This poster session summarizes the librarians’ role in Gateway Seminary’s relocation of its main campus from Northern California to Ontario, California, four hundred miles south. The move affected both staff and the library collections. The poster is available here. The Proceedings submission includes lessons we learned from the move that will be helpful for any library planning to move to a new or renovated space.

In the article is discribed the first experience of preparing the album directory signs European bibliophiles books kept in the fund Scientific Library of Odessa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov. The scheme of description of bookmarks, developed according to the experience of predecessors, is outlined. The data on bibliophiles and the quantitative composition (statistics) of their bookmarks are given. The main problems with which the researcher of book marks encounters is considered. The album-catalog «Book Marks European bibliophiles collections in the University Library» was published to the 200th anniversary of the Scientific Library of Odessa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov. The book contains information about several dozen well-known and little-known bibliophiles and their book marks. First introduced images and descriptions 137 book marks 77 bibliophiles, books are available in the collections of the University Library. Among them, book marks crowned persons, public figures and politicians, representatives of the scientific elite (mathematicians, astronomers and physicists, slavist, historians and lawyers) and others. The main problem encountered by a book mark researcher is the limited access to many electronic databases that facilitate the identification and study of bookmarks. Studying copies of a university library with proprietary features remains relevant in the future. Research Book Marks involves identifying housing proveniyentsiy, careful reading marґinaliy and their attribution, introducing scientific use sources that reveal the history of the formation and movement of parts bibliophilic collection, systematization of data and in the future – the creation and constant updating electronic database of book collections, dispersed in funds.

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a public state university with a commitment to Native American students (Hughes and Tsosie 2013). The university’s Cline Library strongly supports the values of academic excellence, student engagement, and student success. NAU is a unique academic institution because it has a Native student community population of 4%; according to the National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2006 Native students at US universities averaged only 1% of the entire student population. As of 2016, the Native American population at NAU was 825 students. Compared to the overall student population Native students comprise about 3% of student growth. In 2005 NAU’s strategic plan defined a commitment to Native Americans and to “become one of the nation’s leading universities serving Native Americans.” This goal is currently under revision by the university’s Commission for Native Americans and the Vice President for Native American Affairs (Chad Hamill, PhD). What does this goal mean for the university? This is the only goal in the university’s strategic plan where a specific community is mentioned and highlighted as a priority. The institution’s commitment to serving Native Americans has a direct impact on the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates for Native American students. The university commitment to developing collaborative services and outreach programs to Native American communities and promoting engagement and appreciation of Native American cultures and tribal nations within the university and broader community is still a top goal (NAU Strategic Plan 2005-2010). Today over a hundred tribes from across the country are represented at NAU. A large portion of students come from the geographic region of Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Beginning in 2008, Cline Library sought out ways in which it could align its activities with the university's strategic commitment to serving Native Americans. Cline librarians and archivists work to support indigenous students, researchers, scholars, and communities through collecting and preserving Indigenous scholarship. In order to achieve the university’s commitment to Native Americans Cline Library needs a robust collection and services available for Native students. This paper will focus on themes that emerge from a critical analysis of the library’s collections and their work with American Indian communities. It will start by describing how the library applies concepts of critical librarianship and teaching and learning to collection development. The conversation continues with the critical role of librarians and archivists at Cline Library in supporting faculty and students. Finally, as an independent yet integrated department, the library’s Special Collections and Archives unit responds to the Native American community’s tribal concerns with the collaborative management of cultural materials in ways that balance archival theory and practice with access to sensitive information. The conclusion offers strategies to improve on existing efforts at Cline and ties together many of the themes woven throughout the article.

AN OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH INTO THE HISTORY OF LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANSHIP IN POLAND IN 1945–2015The author of the article discusses selected academic and popular publications concerning the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland which appeared in 1945–2015. In that period information about the most important historical resources of various Polish libraries and early book collections was made available; in addition, the period was marked by progress in the study of materials originating before the end of the 18th century. Scholars published a range of methodological studies as well as studies dealing with sources, contributing to the development of scholarship. On the other hand, there were too few editions of source materials.After 1989 scholars intensified their efforts to find sources in foreign collections, especially in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Germany. Polish collections kept abroad are yet to be fully researched and have their inventories and catalogues published.The vast body of literature is uneven when it comes to its focus on the various historical periods, regions, subregions and local centres. It comprises publications dealing with the history of libraries, their function and role in culture with regard to the history of the book, and publications focused on the types of libraries or individual libraries — of different traditions, sizes and stature. Scholars also explored the history of home book collections, reading rooms and libraries as well as biographies of librarians and collectors. The quality of the publications varies. There are gaps in, for example, the history of libraries in the former Polish Eastern Borderlands as well as “blank pages” in the historiography of Polish librarianship after the Second World War. There is a visible shortage of quantification of phenomena from the past of libraries, despite the fact that there are some possibilities in this respect. What is also needed is development in comparative studies, also in an international perspective, although this would require Polish historians to become more interested than before in the history of librarianship in other countries.

Digital age or information society has not only brought several opportunities before us, but also several challenges. From users’ point of view, consulting a multitude of sources, libraries, systems and networks across disciplines for required information is a formidable task in the digital age, particularly in social sciences and humanities. Users are going to the Internet in the myth that everything is available there, instead of using the rich collections that many libraries, including research and reference ones, have built over the years and most of the materials available in these collections are not available on the Internet. Part of the problem is that many if not most users are unaware of the rich collections available only in the printed form. The traditional library, by adding digital resources to its collection, is going to be the hybrid or polymedia library of the future with provision for accessing the resources across space and time limitations. As the diffusion of the Internet is taking place deep across urban and rural areas in the country and even through mobile phones, all libraries in India general, and reference and research libraries, in particular, need to redefine their role to be in-sync with the tech-savvy generation to make their collections and services reach users across space and time limitations. This paper presents a study of Dr. Ganda Singh Punjabi Reference Library (PRL), Patiala. PRL is a specialised research and reference library, located in Punjabi University campus, Patiala and is a major centre for study in Indian history and culture in general, and that of Punjab in particular, besides being a repository of materials on Punjabi language and literature and on Punjab history and culture. The back bone of the library is its Special collection section that contains special collections. These special collections are 54 in number, which contain more than 70,000 documents-including books, manuscripts, diaries, memoirs, rare books, maps, old journals and newspapers, religious scriptures etc. - from the personal collections of literary luminaries and scholars. These collections have contributed significantly in building up a strong collection on Indian and Punjab history and culture, and on Punjabi language and literature. In spite of several initiatives such as MIP project for preservation, DELNET database project for access, merging of special collections and reclassification of some special collections, automation and digitisation initiatives etc., the services of the library have not kept pace with the developments in technology to cater to the needs of those users who cannot visit the library. This is typical of an Indian research and reference library primarily on social sciences and humanities. The paper also gives some suggestions for managing special collections of the library so that these could be made available to users worldwide. It is imperative for PRL, which has preserved the graphic records of the Greater Punjab region, to meet the information needs of scholars, researchers and others located anywhere in the world and interested in India in general; and on any aspect of the greater Punjab region in particular. The challenge before PRL is huge but not insurmountable given the fact that basic ICT infrastructure is already available in the library and in Punjabi University, where the library is located. By doing so, PRL can set benchmarks for other reference and research libraries in the country.

The activities of the libraries on creation of the electronic information resources for culture and art are considered. The study was conducted on the basis of search and selection of information on the resources on the websites of 15 federal libraries. There were revealed 23 online resources created by the Russian State Library, the Russian National Library, the Russian State Art Library, the Russian State Library for Young Adults, the Russian State Children’s Library, the Scientific Pedagogical Library named after K.D. Ushinsky, the State Public Historical Library and the Russian State Library for the Blind. As a result of the research, it was revealed that the libraries currently to a greater extent provide information resources in traditional forms of presentation (card file, local database, printed publication), rather than in electronic form (remote open access resources). There prevail the resources of universal nature, including the resources for culture and art. Among the features there is noted the development of the new modern forms of presentation of resources in the form of virtual exhibitions, electronic collections, catalogues, that include digitized documents from library collections. Herewith, the documents are available both in the public domain and in the restricted access; and there is possible to acquaint with the document content in the reading rooms of libraries. On the basis of monitoring of libraries’ websites, it is made the conclusion on the need of intensification of activities to create specialized thematic resources for culture and art with the aim of further development of information culture and support of the information literacy of users, as well as for the professional competence of specialists.

Gallica, the digital library of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, was launched in 1997. The library contains almost five million documents (manuscripts, books, journals, newspapers, maps, iconographic documents, and recordings), many of which are connected to Latin America, offering rich perspectives on the relationships between France and Latin American countries across the centuries. The many travel narratives, testimonies, essays, photographs, and maps available provide rich insight into French perception of Latin America from the early 16th century to the mid-20th century. Although Gallica’s collection of manuscripts on Latin America is not plentiful, one of its main goals is to provide easy access to rare French books printed centuries ago, of which not many copies are available today and which are rarely present in other digital libraries. The richest collection is probably on Brazil, since Gallica has organized a special collection titled “France-Brésil” which provides access to the rich personal collection of books and manuscripts of the first French historian of Brazil, Ferdinand Denis (1798–1890), among other treasures. Gallica has undeniable value for researchers specialized in Latin American history, although working on its collections requires at least reading proficiency in French as the vast majority of the accessible resources are in French.

Jednym ze źródeł, pozwalającym odtworzyć politykę biblioteczną Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej KUL w jej początkach, są sprawozdania przygotowywane w latach 1925-1939 dla Ministerstwa Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego oraz Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego, których odpisy zachowały się w Archiwum Uniwersyteckim KUL. Zawierają pierwsze zestawienia liczbowe powielane później na forum ogólnopolskim, np. w rocznikach statystycznych. Podają też informacje o zbiorach i nabytkach Biblioteki, składzie osobowym oraz udostępnianiu zbiorów. Wynika z nich, że głównym źródłem pozyskania książek były dary, ponieważ środki finansowe uczelni nie pozwalały na zakup większych partii, a egzemplarz obowiązkowy był przyznany Uniwersytetowi jedynie na krótko. Książki i czasopisma udostępniano zarówno na miejscu, jak i wypożyczano na zewnątrz, przy czym te ostatnia forma znacznie przewyższała wykorzystanie w czytelni. Było to związane przede wszystkim z trudnymi warunkami lokalowymi i krótkim czasem otwarcia Biblioteki. The reports prepared in 1925-1939 for the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education and the Central Statistical Offi ce – copies of which survived in the KUL University Archive – are one of the sources for reconstructing the library policy of the KUL University Library at its beginning. These reports contain the fi rst numerical data which were later reproduced and published in the statistical yearbooks of the Republic of Poland. They also provide information on the library’s collection, acquisitions, personnel, and regulations on making the collection available to the public. The reports under study show that the books were primarily given to the library as gifts; the university did not have enough fi nancial resources to purchase a large number of books, and its library became a legal deposit library only for a short time. Readers and researchers could access books and magazines in the reading room or borrow them; and due to the diffi cult housing conditions and the short opening hours of the library, it was mainly magazines that were read on-site.

This study aims to explain the implementation of procurement collection library materials printed on central library Janabadra Yogyakarta, this study used qualitative methods by data collection in the form of observation and interview. Based on procurement activities conducted that the library Janabadra Yogyakarta apply method 2 that is 1. Procurement through the purchase with the publisher a year 2 times. 2 procurement of library materials through gifts / donations from internal and external parties. In conducting library procurement activities in collaboration with lecturers and students in fulfilling the collection in the library that remains based on the development of science and the applicable syllabus. Gifts and donations form an integral part of an academic library’s existence, whether monetary or physical items. While monetary gifts are greatly valued, gift-in-kind donations of physical items can also contribute rare or unique items to collections. However, gift-in-kind donations also bring many challenges, as processing and evaluating physical materials can be time-consuming and labour-intensive; moreover, these materials may occupy significant amounts of space and ultimately may or may not add value to the library collection. Providing clear, publicly available gift and donation information can mitigate some of these challenges and help to set expectations for donors by giving a clear overview of the evaluation process and letting them know which types of material are of interest. The author reviewed donation-related webpages of twenty-one Canadian academic libraries to determine commonalities regarding library donation webpages. This analysis can provide practical assistance to librarians who are creating or revising gift-in-kind policies and procedures in Canadian academic libraries. It is a known fact that Chennai city has a well-defined place when talking about landmark buildings, which have gone down the annals of history- Connemara library, certainly a pride of Madras is not only heaven for book lovers and research Scholars, the building by its sheer architectural beauty and marvel acquires a special significance as part of the history of Madras City. Public library is largely regarded as the People's University. It has tremendous developments in India from the early period to till date at various stages. Most of the Indian states now have free public library services to develop the people of India at different levels, which can be stated as below briefly. Majority of the users prefer to search documents directly from the stack room. The main purpose of visiting the library by the users is to prepare for completive examinations and some other purposes are to study in the library and to update their subject knowledge. The general book services provided by the library are highly useful. The Reference services provided by the library are highly useful. The users are satisfied with the information provided in the library. All the services available on the library except latest collections are found to be at satisfactory level. Nearly 7.5 lakhs of collection of books are available in the library. Selection of books is done by book selection committee. Nearly four hundred books are issued daily to the public. The uses can retain the book for a maximum of 14 days. The users can renew the books for another three times either through phone or in person. A minimum amount of Rupees two per week is charged as overdue charge.

On the decline of budgetary allocation for libraries, information is being made available to wider audience through alternative means, such as digital libraries and online repositories. Increasing demand for certain print materials urge libraries to exploit open-source alternatives, which are highly advantageous for libraries with scarce financial resources and voracious demand from their users. An interview survey results justified the establishment of digital library service as both students and academics, amongst other issues, recorded their inability to spare time for accessing certain print collections. In this regard, like other libraries in the country, the Library of Eastern University, Sri Lanka has initiated digital library initiatives using freely available software. Amongst a number of open-source software (OSS) available to create and manage digital library collections, Greenstone and DSpace are being experimented for developing two different types of repositories. However, these two software have slight merits and demerits over one another. This paper scrutinizes those features corresponding to the needs of and challenges faced by the Library of Eastern University, Sri Lanka (EUSL), which is in its initial stage of launching digitized collections representing both its academic works and local publications. Pricing: free.]In January 2005 a pilot project to digitize 130 medieval manuscripts from the Abbey Library of St. Gall in Switzerland began. The program was an initiative of Prof. Dr. Christoph Flueler at the University of Fribourg with the intent to digitize medieval manuscripts and make them freely available online to scholars and researchers through the Codices electronici Sangalleses (CESG) website (henceforth, "e-codices").8 Ten years later, with funding from multiple sources and the support of the Rectors Conference of Swiss Universities, the project has become part of a national initiative for widespread digitization. Scholars now have free access to 1,363 fully digitized manuscripts as part of a virtual research library of bound manuscripts dating from the fourth century to early modernity made available by fifty-seven libraries, churches, and private collections in Switzerland and abroad.The breadth and quality of material digitized and available in e-codices is a rich resource for researchers investigating varied aspects of manuscript studies such as textual transmission and criticism, paleography, liturgy, musical notation, iconography, and source studies. Users can search the virtual library by institution and manuscript shelf number or by person name to find high resolution, digital images of complete manuscripts. Each item in the library includes at least one detailed, scholarly description and accompanying bibliography related to the manuscript object.For music scholars, the significance of the collections available in e-codices cannot be understated. The manuscripts from the Abbey Library of St. Gallen represent the largest set of digitized volumes-541 to date-and 92 of these feature musical notation. Within the digitized holdings are some of the most important primary source documents for early music notation. Digitized holdings include the Cantatorium of St. Gall 9, the earliest known complete manuscript with neume notation. Also online is Einsiedeln Stiftsbibliothek (Codex 121(1151)), which is the oldest complete extant neumed mass antiphonary and is a primary source for sequences by Notker Balbulus. Early modern additions to the virtual library include the Autographs of Jean Jacques Rousseau project featuring Rousseau's first handwritten edition of the Dictionnaire de musique.The design and functionality of the site by the Swiss-based IT company text & bytes GmbH is impressive. The company specializes in the digital humanities and in custom built web applications.10 In December 2014, e-codices Web Application 2.0 was made public, giving users a new search function, an improved viewer with seamless zoom, a user friendly metadata display, and improved PDF, print, and downloading functionality. This chapter presents the library at NIAS (Nordic Institute of Asian Studies), an independent research and resource institute supporting research on Asia in the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The NIAS Library and Information Centre (NIAS LINC) provides information resources for the member institutions of the Nordic NIAS Council (NNC) specifically and for the Nordic Asian studies community in general. The NIAS LINC's collections focus on modern and contemporary Asia from an area studies perspective. Since 2014, the collection consists strictly of online resources, while the printed collections have been transferred to the Royal Library. The collections include both free resources available for all users and licensed resources only available to the NNC institutions via the AsiaPortal. The collection is under continuous development by the staff at the NIAS Library in cooperation with the contact librarians at the NNC institutions.

The subject of this article is to analyze the national bibliography as a means for promoting the documentary heritage and providing access to it. It discusses various forms of the national bibliography as well as their potential for preserving the memory and ensuring access to documentary resources and their promotion. The article serves the purpose, by drawing on the analysis of foreign publications, of substantiating the idea that the national bibliography as a structured registry of the national publishing output may serve as a reliable means for promot­ing the documentary heritage. The article elaborates on the evolution of the notion and coverage of the national bibliography as well as its presentation to the public. The national bibliography was defined in the 60ies of the 20th century by joint efforts of UNESCO and IFLA. This definition underlined that the national bibliography must cover the nation’s entire published output. The notion of the national bibli­ography underwent some evolution, and in the 21st century the focus shifted towards registering electronic publishing resources alongside with solving the issues of presenting the national bibliography to the public. Previously, the presence of a bibliographic record in the national bibliography signified that the resource was available within the legal de­posit collection of the library, whereas at present the issue of having to register national information resources which do not belong to this collection is gaining persistence. Another significant issue in making the national bibliography a comprehensive reg­istry of the nation’s publishing output is the relation between the national bibliography and legal deposit. Successful and sustainable development of the national bibliography requires cooperative effort in creating and updating publication and factual data and ef­ficient communication with publishers and other suppliers of public information within the chain of legal deposit. This interaction substantiates the existence of the national bibliography as the all-reflecting mirror creating opportunities to cognize the national documentary cultural heritage and ensuring its promotion and access, The register of bibliographic and authority data of published documents helps preserve the cultural and his­torical memory; ensures dissemination of knowledge about historical and cultural events and their interpretation; and gives a panorama of the cultural history, the heritage of the traditional culture, prominent fellow-countrymen and national uniqueness. The analysis of websites of national libraries of various countries which are legal deposit receivers shows that some of them remind the publishers of their obligation to submit legal deposit copies in a laconic manner and some of them provide more information, e.g. types and quantity of legal deposit copies and terms of submission as well as give references to appropri­ate legal acts. Some of these institutions highlight the significance of legal deposit as a means of preserving cultural heritage and ensuring access to it for the general public and researchers. However, there is no clear message addressed to the integral and primary chain of the legal deposit system, the publishers, about their responsibility about the comprehensiveness of legal deposit and the publishers’ benefits from contributing to the preservation and access of the national cultural heritage. The article analyzes the transformation of the national bibliography from a printed list to a presentation of linked data. Digital and information technologies applied in publication pro­cesses and creation of new forms of disseminating data of national bibliographies contribute to promoting the national history and cultural memory. Broad access to national bibliographic data allows the general public creating new services and products. The precise definition of purposes of the national bibliography and its users could facilitate the shaping of the appropriate model of the national bibliography.

Public and university libraries have embraced placemaking theories to develop user-centric library spaces. Placemaking has largely been overlooked in the context of academic law libraries. This article explores the range of space planning choices available to law libraries as they downsize their print collections. The benefits of reimaging law library space using placemaking concepts are explained.

This essay and checklist document the exhibition Pageant of the Tsars: The Romanov Coronation Albums, held at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens February 16–June 8, 2013. The exhibition focused on the history of the Romanovs through the lens of the coronation albums of the tsars. Based on the collection of five of the seven coronation albums held in the Hillwood library, the exhibition was supplemented with objects from the museum and library collections, loans from other institutions, and electronic versions of the albums available on iPads in the exhibition and via the iBooks store. The show marked the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Romanov dynasty in 1613.

Their development is one of the effects of the digital revolution in science, their use in medicine has increased and the bibliometric applications in the medical field can be classified into five categories: recovery literature, obtaining new knowledge, literature reviews, medical science analysis, evaluation, management and medical policy, we give some examples. The millions of medical data that are generated from the literature, the thousands of library collections in the world and the hundreds of applications available today to process and analyze literature, indicate the importance of preparing medical specialists in Mexico that dominate the processing of electronic literature by innovative methods and cutting edge like scientometrics. The first step towards this goal will be to teach doctors in training features, advantages and perspectives of this method.

Pricing: institutional subscription $2250 per year with unlimited simultaneous users; currently, subscriptions available for academic libraries only.] Until the launch of Academic Charts Online: International Popular Music (ACO) in June 2012, any project requiring the ability to extract and compare charting data for sound recording sales was a labor-intensive and often bleak prospect. Of course, Billboard data have long been available to some patrons via local subscriptions of print and microfilm editions and more recently electronically, including via the Billboard site and through Google Books, (1) while Cash Box holdings are more limited in libraries but now available online as well. (2) The Official Charts Company provides electronic access to a subset of British charting data via their Web site, (3) and dedicated scholars have compiled much charting data in books. (4) Users hoping to collect, compare, and analyze sales and charts data over time could certainly gather some of that information manually using such sources. but the introduction of ACO facilitates that work for the user, provides tools for analysis, and adds much more data than have traditionally been collectively available in library collections. ACO currently includes chart data from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Spain, Australia, and Mexico from a variety of sources authorized by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. (5) Coverage dates and chart types vary by location. For the U.S. and Canada, Billboard data represent all of the included information, with U.S. singles going back to 1956 and U.S. albums to 1985 (with eventual album backfill to 1955), and Canada going back to 1996. U.K. data come from Official Charts, beginning in 1952. Media Control provides German and Spanish data going back to 1977 and 2003, respectively. Australian data come from ARIA (back to 1988), and Mexican data from Nielsen Music Airplay (back to 1999). In each of these areas, coverage generally differs for singles charts, album charts, genre charts, and so on. New data arrive weekly, although one provider has a short embargo before the data appears in ACO with an average of only about a week's lag time for the majority of the content. These data are presented as a searchable database with tools to create analytics that allow the user to compare charting positions by artist, title (singles and albums), countries in which titles charted, label, and more. ACO personnel come from backgrounds in electronic publishing and databases, with additional experience in the music industry, so they approach this project with expertise and enthusiasm; for example, they started Classical Music Library as one of the pioneers of streaming music for libraries. An advisory board made up of librarians and academics helps guide the development of the product and supplements this expertise. Functionality AC0's approach to controlled vocabulary mirrors the predictive search mechanism in Google and, as such, will seem familiar to many users. When one begins a search, potential results display just below the search box; the user selects the desired search term from the controlled list to populate the search box. 11 no suggestions appear once a complete name or title is entered, there are no data for that search term. The predictive results will include a combination of possible results types. For instance, a search beginning with "Elliott" will suggest Missy Elliott, Carol Elliott, Elliott Smith, William Elliott Whitmore, and others as artist searches, as well as albums and singles by each of these artists. …

E‐books are available to academic libraries through a wide variety of acquisition models. The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) Library has used demand‐driven acquisitions (DDA) as its principal model for providing access to e‐books from its founding in 2005 to the present. This paper will discuss the influence of the situation at UC Merced on the implementation of DDA plans for e‐books and the results of the most recent five years of operations of these plans. E‐Books at UC Merced The University of California, Merced (UC Merced), the tenth campus in the University of California system and the first new American research university in the 21st century, welcomed its first class in 2005. The initial class comprised 875 students, mostly undergraduates. In fall 2015, UC Merced had 6,700 students including almost 400 graduate students. There is a proposal currently under review to construct sufficient academic buildings and student housing to allow the campus to grow to 10,000 students including 1,000 graduate students by 2020. From the beginning, e‐books have been a very important component of collection development at UC Merced. At the present time the library has approximately 1.2 million e‐books available and a print collection of approximately 125,000 volumes. Of the 1.2 million available e‐books, 800,000 volumes are available through University of California system‐wide package licenses with publishers such as Springer, Wiley, and Elsevier. In a majority of cases negotiations for system‐wide e‐book packages are linked to negotiations for journal packages from the same publishers. This trend has accelerated during the past five years. The remaining 400,000 e‐books are available through a variety of locally licensed models: 128,000 through an ebrary Academic Complete subscription; 216,000 through an EBL demand‐ driven acquisitions (DDA) plan with purchase on the fourth use after three short‐term loans (STLs); and 55,000 through a DDA plan with MyiLibrary with purchase on the second use without STLs. The Academic Complete subscription provides access to a wide variety of academic titles with unlimited simultaneous users for a very low per title cost. A potential disadvantage is that if the subscription were to be allowed to lapse, all access would be lost. Since UC Merced anticipates being able to maintain the subscription for the foreseeable future, this is not an issue. One of the main reasons for choosing EBL as the library’s principal e‐book aggregator, was EBL’s use of “non‐linear lending.” This model is not quite unlimited simultaneous users, but it’s close. The model allows a specified number of accesses during a calendar year, usually 300 or 325, before an additional copy needs to be purchased to maintain access to that title. The number of accesses resets each calendar year. This model is extremely useful when faculty assign e‐books for class reading. If these books were available with 1‐ user or even 3‐user licenses, the number of turnaways and the resulting frustration could be significant. At UC Merced only one title available under “non‐linear lending” has exceeded the number of allowed uses over ten years. The MyiLibrary DDA plan was originally implemented to provide access to titles not available from EBL. It was also an experiment with a different DDA model that didn’t involve the use of STLs. Content from publishers that no longer support DDA plans of any type is no longer available at UC Merced except for a small number of titles individually purchased. According to ProQuest the EBL and ebrary catalogues should be combined by the end of 2015. The EBL catalogue has already been deduped against ebrary Academic Complete at UC Merced. The library is currently in the process of examining the new publishers currently with ebrary that will be available when the two catalogues are merged. At this point a number of non‐academic publishers have been excluded from the plan. Other publishers may be excluded in the future based on willingness to support short‐term loans, the cost of STLs, and the availability of titles under non‐linear lending licenses. Now that ProQuest has also acquired MyiLibrary, the expectation is that there will be one unified catalogue of all ProQuest e‐books in the not too distant future. Having almost 275,000 e‐books available through DDA is contrary to the collection development practices of most research libraries that carefully circumscribe the size of their DDA pools by subject, publisher, publication year, etc. in order to guard against possible runaway costs. Other than blocking most titles in Library of Congress class R (medicine, nursing, dentistry, etc.), removing certain non‐academic publishers and having a $300 per title price limit, there have been no other substantial restrictions on the size of the DDA pool at UC Merced. There is specifically no limit by publication year. The library chose to take this approach primarily due to the rapid, uncoordinated increase in faculty hiring and in the establishment of new programs resulting from the university being in a start‐up mode for the first decade of its existence. Both the administration and faculty have tried to expand academic offerings as quickly as possible. Often this has resulted in hiring an individual faculty member in a field that is completely new at UC Merced. In many cases the library did not know that the faculty member had been hired until he or she appeared at the library to request book purchases and journal subscriptions. Since many new faculty, particularly in the humanities, have research agendas that are not shared by other UC Merced faculty, they often request information resources that are not useful to other faculty or programs. These conditions made it practically impossible to manage the DDA plans in the traditional manner. Another reason for taking this approach is that the library did not have and still does not have a sufficient number of librarians to have assigned subject selectors. There simply aren’t enough people to do title‐by‐title selection either for print or electronic monographs. Because of the emphasis on interdisciplinary work, UC Merced does not have traditional academic departments. Faculty have self‐ organized into various groups based on disciplinary or cross‐disciplinary working relationships. These organizational factors have also made it difficult for the library to initiate and maintain discussions with faculty regarding collection development. Under these circumstances, the best way to support teaching and research has been to cast a wide net with the DDA plans. As academic hiring becomes more stable, it is anticipated that the DDA pool will become more focused. The article discusses a newly-discovered collection of administrative documents and correspondence from the Russkii zagranichnyi istoricheskii arkhiv [Russian Historical Archive Abroad], which was active 1924–1945. The collection is housed in the Slavonic Library in Prague. It is important for both the history of the archive itself and the history of the Russian emigration. An inventory list of the collection is now available on the library's Web site.

The following article was presented in a panel discussion which explored library operational adaptations to the changing technologies of information distribution and usage. The librarians on the panel presented glimpses of the changes occurring in their library operations as they transition to services without print. The librarians explored, through the evidence of their changing library operations, a range of topics, for example: trends in e‐resource acquisition and usage; changes in consortia; processing and organizational changes; and developments in open access publishing and library e‐publication. After initial presentations, the panel and moderator encouraged questions, comments, and discussion with attendees. Jim Dooley, Head, Collection Services, University of California, Merced The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) opened in 2005 as the tenth University of California (UC) campus and welcomed its tenth freshman class in August 2014. From 875 students and thirteen faculty in 2005, UC Merced has grown to 6,300 students, including 350 graduate students. Currently there are 207 tenured or tenure‐track faculty and an additional 140 lecturers. When the campus opened in 2005 only the library building was operational. Currently there are six academic buildings, a seventh under construction and residence halls housing over 2,000 students. The campus hopes to receive a Carnegie Classification as a Research University‐ High Output in 2015. The current strategic plan envisions that the campus will grow to 10,000 students, including 1,000 graduate students, by 2010. Space for the expansion will be obtained through a public‐private partnership with a commercial developer that will construct a series of mixed‐use buildings on a site adjacent to the current campus. For the UC Merced Library the collection philosophy remains access vs. ownership or just‐ in‐time vs. just‐in‐case. The goal is to meet an information need in the most appropriate way regardless of format or means of acquisition. It doesn’t matter if the information resource is purchased, rented, or borrowed; only that the need is met. One manifestation of this philosophy is the heave reliance on demand‐driven acquisitions (DDA) and subscription databases to provide access to locally licensed e‐books. Collection funds provide access to the largest possible number of titles, not to purchase a much smaller number of titles in order to build a permanent collection. Currently the library collection is approximately 92% electronic. This includes journals, e‐books, databases, and U.S. government documents. The library subscribes to the Marcive Documents Without Shelves service which provides bibliographic records with links to electronic U.S. government documents to enable it to be a Federal Depository Library. The high percentage of electronic resources in the collection is not a result of favoring access over ownership. Rather, the high percentage results from the library being opened in 2005 when the transition from print to electronic was well underway. The collection is a combination of electronic resources licensed by the California Digital Library (CDL) for all or a subset of UC campuses, as well as locally licensed electronic resources and purchased print books and DVDs. Despite its name, the CDL is a part of the University of California Office of the President and provides negotiation and licensing services as well as technology development and management to the UC libraries. Each UC library pays a proportional share for access to these resources. Currently 60% of the UC Merced Library collection budget goes to provide access to CDL‐licensed resources. At the UC Merced Library the transition from print to electronic is almost complete for serials. Currently the library provides access to approximately 112,000 online journals (most through CDL‐licensed packages) and 20 print journals. The print serials are all in the humanities and currently unavailable online. The print subscription would be cancelled if any were to become available electronically. Acquisition of print books has been through approval plans supplemented by firm orders at faculty request. The print collection has also been supplemented by various gifts of books. Except for gifts, all books in the collection were published in 2003 or later. From the opening of the library there have been two approval plans: one for humanities, social sciences, and arts, and one for science. At the beginning both approval plans were rather broad because academic planning was unfocused. As programs developed, the scope of the approval plans has been progressively narrowed to focus on areas of campus research and teaching. Early in 2014 the science approval plan was shut down completely due to a combination of decreasing circulation and budget pressures. The social sciences, humanities, and arts approval plan remains. Currently there are just over 118,000 print books and 2,600 DVDs in the collection. When the library opened in 2005, probably few would have predicted that e‐books would become such an important part of research library collections in a decade. Very few e‐books were available through UC systemwide licenses. While there never was an intention to replace print books with e‐books, the library began experiments with e‐books soon after opening. The first was a subscription to ebrary Academic Complete which provided access to a growing collection of academic titles, now over 116,000, at a very low cost per title as long as the subscription was maintained. The largest number of locally licensed e‐books are available through demand‐ driven acquisitions (DDA) plans with EBL (300,000 titles) and MyiLibrary (50,000 titles). Under the EBL plan, titles are purchased on the fourth access after three short ‐term loans (STLs). The MyiLibrary plan does not employ STLs; titles are purchased on the second access. During the past ten years large numbers of e‐books have become available at UC Merced through UC systemwide agreements including both stand‐alone packages (Royal Society of Chemistry, ASME) and e‐books linked to journal packages (Springer, Wiley, Elsevier). The result is that the library now provides electronic access to 1.05 million titles: 580,000 through systemwide packages and 470,000 through local licenses. This is currently nine times the number of print titles in the local collection. Because approximately 30% of available e‐books are accessed through a DDA plan with STLs, the library has been significantly affected by the increases in STL rates announced by certain publishers in the summer of 2014. The timing of these increases so close to the start of the fiscal year was decried by many libraries and library consortia. The Boston Library Consortium wrote an open letter published in The Chronicle of Higher Education strongly objecting both to the timing and size of these increases. (http://chronicle.com/blogs/letters/ebook ‐pricing‐hikes‐amount‐to‐price‐gouging) While the timing of these increases is certainly an issue, the effects on the UC Merced collection are also significant. The monthly spend for the EBL DDA plan has remained relatively constant for the past several years in spite of significant yearly enrollment increases. After the STL increases, spending increased 50%, even though enrollment for 2014‐2015 had been held at last year’s levels. The number of STLs increased slightly for these months compared to the corresponding months in the previous year, but the costs increased out of all proportion to the increased usage. A hypothetical example illustrates the problem. A STL at 10% for a book with a $200 list price is $20; a STL at 25% for the same book is $50. As a result of these increases, the content of over a dozen publishers has been completely removed

When the faculty of the College of Staten Island, CUNY (CSI) introduced a new baccalaureate level program in East Asian Studies the library faced the challenge of evaluating the adequacy of its holdings to support the program and its future development. Multidisciplinary fields of study (e.g., East Asian Studies) that pertain to a specific geographical or cultural area present a unique set of evaluative issues because their subject content cannot be confined to set classification ranges, rendering the traditional methods of collection analysis inadequate . This poster will present the results of an evaluation of CSI’s East Asian Studies collection, discuss some of the challenges the authors encounter when analyzing this collection, and it will propose ways that the collection can be strengthened in the future. This analysis, as any analysis of a multidisciplinary field, must begin with clearly defining its span—in this case the scope of the East Asian Studies program at CSI. Then the authors will identify a few peer institutions with East Asian collections that can be used for purposes of comparison. Then the authors will examine how to best use the available tools (e.g., Aleph integrated library system, OCLC WorldShare Collection evaluation tool, and the CSI stacks). The poster will then explore strategies for specific (call number, subject, and keyword) catalog searches and the types of searches available by the WorldShare Collection Evaluation tool which could render results relevant for the purpose of multidisciplinary content evaluation. The authors will share related subject headings lists and call number ranges that could be successfully used to cover the area of interest and the keywords crucial to successful searches.

Purpose The study aims to investigate the document selection rationale of library and information science students to satisfy their academic needs. Design/methodology/approach The descriptive survey design was used for the study using questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The collected data are analysed by frequency distribution and presented using charts and tables. Findings The results of the study reveal the preferences of Library and Information Science (LIS) students and hints what they want from LIS literature. A majority of students prefer books in comparison to journal articles as reading material. The survey revealed a high preference towards books written by authors from national origin than international authors. Similarly, students prefer books published by the national publishers than the international publishers. The findings further suggest that the affiliation of the author is a major factor, as the students prefer books written by authors from central universities more than those written by authors belonging to state universities or authors from industry. Further, students seem to be more impressed with the books written by LIS academics than the books written by practising librarians. Research limitations/implications One limitation of the study is that it was conducted in India, taking the case of LIS students from only two universities. To generalise the impact, similar studies should be replicated by taking a larger sample to gain a complete perspective of LIS students. Practical implications The findings of the study have both theoretical and practical implications. The theoretical understanding of the behaviour of LIS students will help faculty members to understand the selection rationale of students. The practical aspect of this study is that the findings will help the acquisition librarians to take informed decisions in collection building for LIS collection in their libraries. Originality/value Most of the studies available in LIS literature related to reading preferences, study the general aspects such as frequency of library visit, the favourite place of reading, the purpose of library visit, gender-wise distribution of library visit, and time spent in the library. There are very few studies investigating the document selection rationale of LIS students.

The University of Mississippi offers many resources for studying the history of the accounting profession around the world. The accountancy library holdings are the largest of any library in the world, including virtually everything published in English during the past century, and many earlier items. In addition to tens of thousands of books and over 1,000 accounting and finance journal titles, there are tens of thousands of pamphlets, speeches, committee reports, photos, and courtroom documents that exist at no other library in the world. There are also hundreds of archival collections of old business records that serve as primary resources for all kinds of accounting research. The J.D. Williams Library at the University of Mississippi is truly the international center of accounting research, and many of its resources are available on the Internet to anyone within reach of a computer. The purpose of the article is to describe the various accounting library collections with particular emphasis on the research resources available internationally through the Internet.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine whether aggregator packages might be appropriate to replace or supplement print collections in business and nursing, it aims to identify e‐book equivalents for print books acquired for an academic library's collections.Design/methodology/approachThis paper provides a list of the library's acquisitions in two disciplines checked against e‐book aggregators' holdings. The comparison is analyzed and discussed.FindingsThe results confirm findings of a previous study showing that less than one‐third of print books acquired for this library's nursing and business collections have e‐book equivalents available from aggregators, so the aggregators' holdings do not strongly match the library's collecting profile.Research limitations/implicationsThe present study applies previous research to a different type of collection, and tests previous conclusions.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to assessment of the value of e‐book collections for academic libraries.

South Pointe Hospital is a community hospital that originally had few electronic resources available. This article describes how the library gradually acquired an electronic journals collection that started with just 2 titles and grew to a list of over 6000 titles including open access publications. The journals' online usage statistics were used to justify and increase the library budget, which enabled the library to purchase more titles as journal infrastructure software. Even though the collection had been created, it must be maintained and promoted; this article briefly discusses the need for education and promotion of the resources.

This chapter critically assess digital library functions and services in Nigeria academic libraries. It highlighted the roles of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) that brought about digital libraries. It is a collection of digital contents that is housed electronically and made available to users. The advantages of digital library were also discussed such as improved access, improved information preservation, it improved information sharing, it enhances library functions and services. Nigerian academic libraries has benefited from the enormous benefits of digital library. The chapter stressed that effort should be improved consortium building so as to improve the services Nigerian libraries render to their patrons. The chapter concludes that Digital library has come a long way in Nigeria, and 21st century libraries cannot afford to render services to users without digital contents added to the prints resources. Therefore, Nigeria libraries and information centres must cooperate in a formal consortia building; this will go a long way to reduce the burden of all participating libraries.

Over the past decade, participation in book discussion groups has blossomed. Libraries have experienced a similar growth in expectations from book club members about the services and resources that can be supplied. Working with book groups gives the library the opportunity to engage a large community of active and passionate readers. But there are challenges to providing these services. One of the great challenges faced in supporting book discussion groups is supplying enough copies of the book being discussed for each group member. In addition to the books, groups often are seeking author information, book reviews, discussion questions, and ancillary material to enhance their encounter with the book. The development of Johnson County's Book Club to Go Kits are part of a strategic direction to offer support to local reading groups and to build the community of readers. Here, members of the Johnson County (Kans.) Library discuss their response to readers' needs for book club titles and discussion resources. Virginia Hermes, who retired in 2007, served as readers' advisory specialist at Johnson County's Central Resource Library. Mary Anne Hile serves as collection development manager for the Johnson County Library, and earned her MLS at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Johnetta L. State University.--Editor The woman consulting her list of Book Club to Go Kits (BCTGK) has been here before. She stands in front of the shelves of bags, reviewing the titles her book club wants to read next and skipping over the ones already marked off. Planning ahead is easy because of the library's check-out period of two months with one renewal. Plenty of time! She can choose from among many types of books--biographies, chick lit, ethnic, literary, mystery, nonfiction, classic, young adult crossover, and men's interests. All readers can be accommodated. The large print copy required by one of her club's members is not a concern. Most of the kits have corresponding large print and audio formats for each title available in the library's collections. Will the kits provide good fodder for discussion.) This also is a guarantee. All of the titles chosen for kits not only contain themes and issues that lend themselves to good discussion but also have discussion guides included either in the book itself or available on the library's website. Actually, she learned how to conduct a book club in this very library. The library offers sessions on how to facilitate a book club, in addition to the How to Start a Book Club link on its website and book discussion groups, led by library staff, to join and from which to learn modeling. Is this book club heaven, or what? WHY BOOK CLUB KITS? WHY NOW? Oprah Winfrey re-energized interest in literature and book clubs when she started her book club in 1996. As a result, public libraries all over America have needed to respond to renewed popular demand for books appropriate for book club discussion and for how-to information about forming and conducting book clubs. In this context, the Johnson County Library staff reviewed its reader services for meeting the goals of its own strategic plan and addressing the Reading at Risk report from the National Endowment for the Arts (www.nea.gov/pub/ReadingAtRisk.pdf). The library's strategic plan charges staff with providing convenient and personalized materials for patrons and had already itemized book club discussion kits as an objective. From this review emanated a literary plan, Cultivating Readers and Writers: Building a Literary Tradition. This plan has several tangible goals including more--and more innovative--literary programming, developing a Find a Good Book page on the library's website, and promoting book clubs. The BCTGK collection is one product of this plan. How does one start? The outcomes identified in the plan were for abstract ideas such as "Creation of a richer literary culture in Johnson County" and "Literature is a means to discussing more serious issues facing our community and our culture. …

Ursache dafür ist, dass elektronische Bücher und Zeitschriften im Regelfall als lizenzierte Materialien zur Verfügung stehen und nicht mehr in den Besitz der Bibliotheken übergehen. Zugleich führt die Subskription von Nutzungslizenzen als E‑Book- und E‑Journal-Pakete zu einer starken Vereinheitlichung der Bestandsprofile. Insgesamt werden damit folgende Fragen aufgeworfen: Auf welche Objekte beziehen sich Sammlungsaktivitäten unter digitalen Vorzeichen? Welche Anforderungen ergeben sich daraus für Bibliotheken? Welche Mehrwerte bieten digitale Sammlungen für die Wissenschaft? Dass Bibliotheken dabei ihrer ursprünglichen Rolle mit den Möglichkeiten digitaler Inhalte in besonderer Weise Rechnung tragen können, lässt die Vision eines Neubeginns greifbar werden. The ongoing transformation to digital information and media is combined with a new understanding of collection development and of collections in academic libraries. Due to the running practise electronic books and journals are available as licensed resources, which libraries don’t own. Furthermore the increasing subscriptions of licenses the so called e‑book and e‑journal packages impact significantly on the standardization of library collections. On the whole new questions are rising up: What are the objects, which are part of digital collections? What are the requirements that libraries have to meet in order to provide and to maintain digital collections? What are the benefits of digital collections for researchers and researchers work? Proceedings with digital collections academic libraries have special regard to their original role, which means to collect materials, and they exploit the potential of digital media and tools. From that the claim for a restart of academic libraries is no vision, but comes true.

PURPOSE: The research assesses the impact of online journals on citation patterns by examining whether researchers were more likely to limit the resources they cited to those journals available online rather than those only in print. SETTING: Publications from a large urban university with a medical college at an urban location and at a smaller regional location were examined. The number of online journals available to authors on either campus was the same. The number of print journals available on the large campus was much greater than the print journals available at the small campus. METHODOLOGY: Searches by author affiliation from 1996 to 2005 were performed in the Web of Science to find all articles written by affiliated members in the college of medicine at the selected institution. Cited references from randomly selected articles were recorded, and the cited journals were coded into five categories based on their availability at the study institution: print only, print and online, online only, not owned, and dropped. Results were analyzed using SPSS. The age of articles cited for selected years as well as for 2006 and 2007 was also examined. RESULTS: The number of journals cited each year continued to increase. On the large urban campus, researchers were not more likely to cite journals available online or less likely to cite journals only in print. At the regional location, at which the number of print-only journals was minimal, use of print-only journals significantly decreased. CONCLUSION/DISCUSSION: The citation of print-only journals by researchers with access to a library with a large print and electronic collection appeared to continue, despite the availability of potential alternatives in the online collection. Journals available in electronic format were cited more frequently in publications from the campus whose library had a small print collection, and the citation of journals available in both print and electronic formats generally increased over the years studied.

Challenged by a historically small monographs collection, a considerable growth in the number of students and academic programs, and faced with space limitations in the stacks, Quinnipiac University librarians began their large-scale investment in e-books in January 2011. Initially, we subscribed to ebrary’s Academic Complete collection. That same year, we began a conversation with EBL and its then Vice President of Sales, Dr. David Swords. It was our desire to compare a subscription approach with a patron-driven acquisitions strategy as we further examined the place of e-books in our libraries. Initially, in 2012, we offered EBL titles published from 2010–2012. Yet, questions remained around the purchase of e-books even when our patrons used EBL titles. An e-book, used but once or twice took up no shelf space, but it represented a purchase—funds spent. In ownership, it also represented a unit that required care; feeding; and, quite possibly, weeding. Discussions with our colleagues at Fairfield University about their short-term loan (STL) strategy intrigued us, and we are indebted to them for sharing data, observations, and issues encountered. In October 2012, Quinnipiac’s Arnold Bernhard Library expanded its own STL initiative, making available the entire EBL catalog and adhering almost completely to STL activity. That is, we bought almost no e-books but made more than 300,000 academic titles available to our patrons. Charles Getchell, former Director of the Bernhard Library, Quinnipiac; June DeGennaro, Collection Management Librarian, Quinnipiac; and David Swords, EBL-Ebook Library/ProQuest will share with you key elements of the planning, implementation, and outcome assessment of this full-fledged STL program at Quinnipiac University. Surprises, discoveries, and future plans will be shared as well. We remain intrigued, as, at present, only three known academic libraries in North America have this valuable access strategy in place.

Throughout the 1990s, many academic libraries undertook major restructuring initiatives. In many cases, this involved merging a Government Documents Department with a General Reference Department. At the University of Oregon Libraries, a different approach was taken. Between 1998 and 2000, the Business Reference service and Map Collection was successfully integrated into the Government Documents Collection. With these three collections now available through one service point, many new opportunities have been created for enhanced reference services, library instruction, collection development, and outreach across campus and into the community. Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library's collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The paging service was modified three times based on prior experience. Patrons were generally satisfied with the service. The renovation ended in December 2004.
