Pulp and paper industry is one of the high priority sectors that generates large amount of solid (sludge) and liquid (paper mill effluent) wastes. Making use of this huge quantity of paper mill sludge (PMS) in an environment friendly manner is challenging and cost involving. Similarly the present wastewater treatment strategies based on physical and chemical methods encounter certain serious setbacks including secondary pollution generation with expensive mode of abatement processes. The present study aims at a “waste treats waste” strategy for the bioremediation of paper mill effluent in fluidized bed reactor (FBR) using another waste of the same industry, PMS as immobilizing matrix for Planococcus sp. TRC1, a wastewater bacterial isolate. This study simultaneously explores this isolate for the yellowish orange pigment it produces (2.3 ± 0.2 mg/gm of dry bacterial biomass) and characterizes it as a member of the pharmacologically important carotenoid pigment family via UV-Vis spectrophotometry, TLC, FT-IR and 13C NMR. The antioxidant potential of this pigment was studied by DPPH assay (IC50 = 33 ± 0.4 μg/ml) and H2O2 assay (IC50 = 147.4 ± 2.2 μg/ml). In FBR, the PMS immobilized bacteria showed removal of phenol, lignin, colour and COD from the effluent by 96%, 74%, 81% and 85% respectively after 60hr of treatment. The experimental data on immobilization fitted well with pseudo second-order (R2 = 0.955) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm (R2 = 0.996) models. The alterations in PMS before and after bacterial immobilization, as revealed by SEM and FT-IR, depicted the success of PMS as immobilization matrix. Phytotoxicity (90% seed germination) and mutagenicity studies confirmed that the treated effluent was substantially less toxic than its raw state. This study highlights a novel utilization possibility of PMS in an eco-friendly and economic way as immobilization matrix for Planococcus sp.TRC1 for paper pulp mill effluent treatment along with production of carotenoid pigment from this potential bacterial isolate as value added product.

The properties of crystal violet lactone (CVL), currently the most commonly used color developer in carbonless papers, were studied. The hypothesis that CVL exhibits different properties in the carbonless and in the office papers was verified, as well as the CVL´s ability to luminesce in the IR region. Furthermore, the impact of thermal and light aging on some physical and chemical properties of the copies was observed. The changes were monitored by observing the IR luminescence at several wavelength ranges. Visual, colorimetric and structure differences between the copies made on the carbonless and the office paper were analyzed. The surface structure of the carbonless paper was analyzed using SEM–EDS.

The fatal conceit of foreign intervention refers to the limitations faced by governments using discretionary power to address perceived problems in foreign societies. Drawing on evidence from the “Afghanistan Papers”—a collection of internal government documents compiled by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) and released in December 2019—we demonstrate how the failure of the U.S.-led intervention in Afghanistan to meet the stated objectives illustrates the fatal conceit of foreign intervention. We explore the limitations faced by foreign government interveners in three stages, reflecting distinct decision nodes within a means-ends framework in which the policies relating to foreign intervention are formulated and implemented.

Smart fluid manipulation with automatically controlled paper valves will enable automated and multi-step immunoassays on paper-based microfluidic devices. In this work, we present an integrated paper-based microfluidic platform with shape-memory polymer (SMP)-actuated fluid valves capable of automated colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). A single-layer microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed to store all the reagents on the chip, and sequentially transfer reagents to a paper test zone following a specific ELISA protocol through automatic fluidic flow control by the multiple SMP-actuated valves. The actuation of a paper valve was based on the thermally responsive, duel-state shape transformation of a SMP sheet attached to the root of a paper cantilever beam for driving a hydrophilic paper bridge to connect and disconnect two paper channels. A portable colorimetric reader was developed to control the on-chip valve operations, quantify the colorimetric signal output, display the assay result, and wirelessly transmit the data to a smart phone for the application of telemedicine. Reliable operations of the paper valve and the entire μPAD were demonstrated with success rates of 97% and 93%, respectively. A detection mechanism for valve malfunction was designed and confirmed effective to identify any mal-operation of individual valves, thus rendering our platform reliable in real assays. For device calibration, we conducted direct ELISAs of rabbit IgG in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and achieved a low limit of detection (LOD) of 27 pM (comparable to that of standard and paper-based ELISAs). In order to demonstrate the clinical application of our multi-step immunoassay platform, we also conducted sandwich ELISAs to quantify the protein level of an inflammatory cytokine, namely tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, in surgically injured laryngeal tissues of rats. The protein levels of TNF-α were shown similar between the conventional and μPAD ELISAs., Microfluidics: Paper valves open doors to new designs Researchers in Canada have improved the design of paper-based analytical devices by developing paper valves which make it possible to carry out fully-automated multi-step analyses. Previous efforts to incorporate valves have been based on electromagnets or compressed sponges, making them too cumbersome or complicated for reliable use in paper-based analytical devices. To overcome this, a team led by Xinyu Liu of the University of Toronto turned to polymers that reversibly change shape in response to temperature. They combined these with a heating element to produce thermally-activated paper valves. Test devices designed to carry out a multi-step ELISA analysis produced results comparable to a standard commercial ELISA kit. The valve design can be used to create devices for other multi-step diagnostic assays which can be used in contexts where lab equipment and skilled personnel are unavailable.

Unplanned outages within the paper industry lead to significant costs to operators. To reduce unplanned outages and losses, condition monitoring (CM) techniques can be implemented to determine asset health and help target maintenance to where it is required most. The challenges faced by the paper industry to implement condition-based maintenance (CBM) on their medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) networks and solutions for online partial discharge (OLPD) monitoring are due to the range and number of assets present and the geographical spread coupled with problems of retrofitting the technology on pre-existing plants. The implementation of OLPD testing or monitoring can vary based on several factors: network topology, connected assets, switchboard type, and the owner's budget and desired local engineer involvement. This article discusses different approaches to implementing an OLPD test program, ranging from simple handheld survey units to complete network monitoring. Its focus is on case studies of the deployment of OLPD testing and monitoring solutions at several U.S. paper sites. The case studies present diagnostic testing of unshielded MV cable at one paper mill up to full permanent OLPD monitoring systems at two others.

There is a lot of investment in research on displaying texture through a stylus pen. However, little is known about the effect of a stylus pen that can provide the texture of pen and paper on user experience. This study investigated whether there is a change in user experience when using a stylus pen that can provide pen-and-paper texture compared with a typical stylus pen. Experiments involving writing and drawing tasks using three tools (a stylus pen that can provide pen-and-paper texture, a typical stylus pen, and analogue pen and paper) were conducted, and user experiences were compared. After a literature review that examined the factors affecting the experience of using a pen, the experiments were conducted to measure usability and emotions. We found little difference between the typical stylus pen and the stylus pen in providing texture in respect of completion time and amount of error. However, the stylus pen that can provide texture showed results closer to those of the analogue pen and paper, and better results than those of the typical stylus pen in respect of familiarity and overall satisfaction of the usability and emotional variables. Therefore, this study confirmed that user experience is improved when using a stylus pen that can provide the texture of pen and paper. Microbial fuel cell is a promising technology to harvest energy from wastewater, and effective anode catalysts are essential for its applications. In this study, zero-dimension nitrogen-doped carbon dots, as biocompatible efficient modifiers, were synthesized and decorated onto the carbon paper surface to prepare microbial fuel cell anode. The as-fabricated nitrogen-doped carbon dots decorated carbon paper anode was able to enhance electricity generation and efficient wastewater treatment. It was found that the as-fabricated electrode had a high hydrophilicity, which was favorable for the microbial immobilization. Compared with the carbon paper anode, the biofilm on the as-prepared anode was almost twice of thickness. After introducing nitrogen-doped carbon dots, the extracellular electron transfer process from the microorganisms to the anode was enhanced. The microbial fuel cell with the as-developed anode generated a remarkable power output of 0.32 mW, 1.1 times higher than that of the raw carbon paper anode with same measurement area. Moreover, 16 sRNA pyrosequencing analysis shows that the quantity of Pseudomonas on the electrode increased by ∼40%, which also promoted the electron transfer rate by excreting mediators like phenazines or phenazine derivatives. This work developed a new approach to design microbial fuel cell anode material and fabricate a high-efficiency and environmentally friendly anode for electricity generation from wastewater.

Control of industrial sheet and film processes involves separate controllers and actuators for minimizing both temporal variations along the machine direction (MD) and spatial variations along the cross direction (CD). Model-based control methods such as model predictive control (MPC) have gained widespread implementation for controlling both the MD and CD processes. One limitation of model-based methods is that changes in the true process pose significant identification challenges for operators which are often resolved with costly open loop identification experiments. The predominant industrial measurement technology acquires a signal of mixed MD and CD variations that requires separation. This work compares various model-free approaches for MD-CD separation as a prerequisite to effective MD control. To address the challenges of model-based control, this paper introduces an adaptive control method for the MD process. Closed loop identification experiments are conducted and compared to benchmarks on an industrial paper machine simulator.

Black liquor, an industrial waste, also generally called spent liquor is a promising feedstock for production of bio-carbon due to its high lignin and energy contents. Mild processing conditions and sustainable resource utilization can drive commercial utilization of this industrial waste. A novel oxidative procedure using hydrogen peroxide as a green liquid oxidant at room temperature for processing of paper recycling neutral sulphite semi-chemical spent liquor was established and evaluations were carried out for its efficiency. Standard hydrothermal carbonization was carried out for comparing bio-carbon production qualitatively and quantitatively using the same spent liquor. The oxidation procedure was performed at room temperature using 5% of H2O2 followed by washing in diluted sulfuric acid (0.15 N) while hydrothermal carbonization was performed at 250 °C. The bio-carbon produced were similar in terms of ash percentage and ranged from 1.25 ± 0.05 to 1.48 ± 0.05% for oxidation method and from 1.11 ± 0.03 to 1.45 ± 0.04% for hydrothermal carbonization. The carbon contents for the oxidation method ranged from 60.54 to 61.50% and 66.81–67.31% for hydrothermal carbonization while higher heating values ranged from 25.32 to 26.11 MJ/kg and from 28.68 to 29.34 MJ/kg respectively. The mass yield ranged from 29.98 to 31.88% by the oxidation, while it was 15.02–16.08% by hydrothermal carbonization.

Coater sections are examples of multi-span web transporting systems, with dynamic characteristics related to the sheet properties and control schemes. This paper first describes and analyzes a set of field records of a production 2-coater section paper machine. Then, extending the 1-coater section model developed in a related paper, a precise simulation model of a 2-coater section is implemented. This model is used to evaluate the beginning of the coating process and the effect on the section responses of different bandwidth settings in the tension and speed controllers. Results show agreement with the field records and demonstrate that the developed model is a powerful tool to analyze and understand the behavior of coater sections during both, transient and steady state conditions.

The global demand for bio-plastic particularly polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) have been increased in the last few decades as a substitute of petrochemical-based plastic. Utilization of waste paper, the primary constituent of municipal solid waste (MSW), as a carbon source for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production is not only an alternative, environmental friendly route of waste management but also helps to valorize the waste. In this study, hydrogen peroxide pretreated waste paper saccharification has been optimized using central composite design (CCD). The maximum hydrolysis (88.18%) occurred at paper loading 5.0 g/L, agitation 242 rpm, working volume 20%, cellulase 49.82 U/g, β-glucosidase 20.9 U/g and hemicellulase 29.5 U/g. PHB synthesis and biomass accumulation by xylose-utilizing Burkholderia sacchari using waste paper hydrolysate were studied using different nitrogen sources and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios. Maximum PHB and dry cell weight (DCW) occurred with ammonium sulfate and a C/N ratio of 20. The highest biomass (3.63 g/L), the maximum PHB accumulation (44.2%) and the maximum reducing sugar utilization (92.1%) were observed after 48 h of cultivation using diluted hydrolysate. The physicochemical properties of the extracted PHB were compatible with the standard PHB. Hence, the waste paper could be exploited as a renewable feedstock for the sustainable production of PHB.

Paper aims This study identifies fundamental characteristics for developing a paper-based thesis (PBT), providing some recommendations to researchers who decide for this academic research report. Originality This paper contributes to the literature by providing guidance to develop PBTs, which has been attracting researchers' interest because it demonstrates publication capacity and potential as a researcher. Additionally, it is still not entirely clear which issues and countermeasures researchers should address when choosing the paper-based structure. Research method The authors searched for articles of PBTs already published, institutional documents (e.g., regulations for conducting PBTs in Brazil and abroad) and journal papers concerning this subject. A content and document analysis were conducted in the papers and PBT internal regulations, respectively. Main findings Results indicate five main factors that impact the success of a PBT approach: (i) the initial planning for this academic model; (ii) alignment between the articles and the thesis/dissertation; (iii) research design construction; (iv) copyrights requirements; and (v) issues regarding co-authorship. Based on that, the study also builds some guidelines to structure a robust PBT. Implications for theory and practice Our recommendations might be meaningful to scholars and researchers bring more theoretical, empirical, and structural robustness when developing a PBT final document.

A comparative study of chemical looping combustion (CLC) with paper, plastic, and coal as fuel was carried out. Experiments were performed in a laboratory fluidized-bed reactor by alternating between reduction and oxidation cycles. The results obtained indicated that a higher temperature leads to an increase in the CO yield and carbon conversion for all fuels. Paper had the highest fractional conversion of CO to CO followed by polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and coal. This was due to the higher fraction of volatiles in paper compared to PVC and coal. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the oxygen carrier particle after each of the solid fuel experiment was carried out. For the used ilmenite, there was a slight difference in the morphology for the three different fuels.

The objective of the present study was to obtain and evaluate the conditions of acid hydrolysis for cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) production, as well as to characterize its chemical and morphological structure and finally to realize and evaluate its application potential on paper as a structural reinforcing agent. From bleached cellulose, CNC is obtained by the acid hydrolysis process at 35, 40 or 45 °C for 25, 30 and 35 min. Then, an ultrasonic disruptor was used to reduce the particle size of the samples. The average particle diameters ranged from 203.4 to 66.4 nm, with yields from 57.57% to 30.14%. To obtain the paper, the cellulose is homogenized by mechanical stirring and is incorporated with starch (5%) and CNC (6, 12 and 18%). This suspension was vacuum filtered and the papers formed are pressed in a hydraulic press (Carver®) for five minutes under 5000kgf. The addition of CNC showed to be a good option for increasing physical and mechanical properties as they improved the paper quality. Papers produced and incorporated with 12% and 18% CNC have superior characteristics in mechanical tensile testing (8.1 MPa) compared to paper without CNC added. Contaminated water contains various types of pollutants, the removal of which requires two or more technologies. It is imperative but challenging to develop water purifier for simultaneous removal of multiple pollutants for the sake of easy operation, low cost, and etc. Previously reported multifunctional purifiers are normally nanoparticles which require caution during use. Here, we describe a design of paper-like multifunctional purifier, which has biomass-based structure by grafting polyethylenimine derived quaternary ammonium compounds onto three-dimensional bacterial cellulose substrate. Compared to similar materials reported previously, our product exhibited strikingly higher adsorption capacities towards various metal ions including Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cr6+, anionic organic dyes including congo red, methyl orange and methyl red, and excellent disinfection efficiency towards both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Remarkably, this purifier also demonstrated effective removal of the three contaminative species simultaneously from both simulated and local polluted water. With more virtues of superior reusability and extreme handy convenience, we hope our molecular design could inspire further efforts on the rational construction of multifunctional water purifier with easy operation. We reckon our material to have strong potential for the possible use in water treatment, especially in regions that are short of environmental infrastructures.

Biologically inspired or mimetic approaches have been traditionally widely adopted in robotic creative design. Generally, the most considered source for biorobotics and soft robotics are animals. Rarely, plants have been considered as a model of inspiration for innovative engineering solutions owing to their inconspicuous motion principles. In this work, a new type of plant-inspired soft robotic gripper was created by reconstructing and simulating the leaf structure and head formation mechanisms of cabbage. Firstly, according to the research reports of biological morphology and curling development mechanism of cabbage leaves, we determined that the flexible leaf with special hierarchical veins is the biological structure basis of curling formation. In the light of this observation, we designed a cabbage-inspired leaf bionic structure using paper substrate as a leaf body and using polylactic acid (PLA) polymer as leaf veins. This bionic design schema of cabbage leaves first has the advantage of ease of manufacture using 3D printing technology. In addition, due to the shape memory effect of PLA, we can control the reciprocal deformation of bionic leaves by controlling the temperature field. Undoubtedly, when two or more pieces of such bionic leaves are assembled together, they can be considered as a soft robotic gripper. Furthermore, we thoroughly studied the embodiment design of this bionic design concept as well as its 3D printing process. Finally, we built a prototype of this cabbage-inspired soft robotic gripper and successfully performed small objects (e.g., spitballs and cylinders) grasping experiments. Obviously, this research achievement first successfully integrated the bionic structure of plant deformation, direct digital manufacturing, and the control of shape memory materials. Secondly, this work realized the unified design of the structure, function, driving, and fabrication of robotics, and further expanded the family of the bionic robot, especially plant-like or plant-inspired robotic solutions.

A kind of wood pulp fiber paper (WPFP) was proposed as candidate for the matrix of desiccant wheel. Silica gel was coated on WPFP by impregnation method and the corresponding coating ratio was obtained and analyzed. Then the thermal conductivity, pore structure and adsorption/desorption performances of WPFP coated with silica gel were tested and analyzed. The results indicated that the WPFP has high coating ratio for silica gel due to its hydrophilic characteristic. The thermal conductivity of WPFP coated with silica gel after the first coating increases obviously compared with raw WPFP and reaches to 0.1292 W/(m⋅K). In addition, the WPFP coated with silica gel after the first coating has high specific surface area and its maximal adsorption quantity for water vapor can be 0.240 g/g. Finally, the DCOP of the desiccant wheel using WPFP as matrix obtained by numerical simulation can be 1.75 under the given working condition that the temperature of regeneration air is set as 90 °C and the inlet condition of process air is set as 34.3 °C and 56.2% RH. It is indicated that the desiccant wheel using WPFP as matrix can meet the requirement of air dehumidification and save energy by 7.35% simultaneously.

Graphene paper (GP) is more feasible to be integrated as a heat spreader than monolayer graphene due to its controllable size and moderate reduction in thermal transport properties. In this work, we fabricated and characterized GP to understand its thermal transport properties based on thermal bridge method combined with transient electro-thermal technique. The thermal conductivity of GP exhibits a highly temperature dependent property from 637 W/mK at room temperature to 757 W/mK at 80 °C, which is contrary to the trend of monolayer graphene. The increasing thermal property can be partially ascribed to the morphological and inner-structural change of the composite at elevated temperatures. Surface roughness is found to be reduced by 30% from atomic force microscope imaging. This feature is beneficial for many industrial applications such as the cooling film in smartphones. The implementation of GP is further verified in a smartphone to simulate the heat-dissipation performance. The results show that GP with temperature dependent properties exhibits much better cooling performance than conventional cooling films such as copper film.

This paper presents a review of recent advances in modeling and simulation of conventional metal machining processes, which continue to dominate a significant part of all machining processes, and in recent years, the need for predictive models for machining processes has grown in importance in the digital manufacturing age. Significant advances have been made in modeling the mechanics of cutting in conventional machining, driven by industrial need and enabled by rapid advances in computational power. The paper surveys the state-of-the-art in analytical and numerical modeling of conventional metal machining processes with a focus on their ability to predict useful performance attributes including chip geometry, forces, temperatures, tool wear, residual stress, and microstructure. Also included in the review is a discussion of the industrial use of modeling and simulation tools for conventional machining. Additionally, the practical applicability, implementation benefits, and methodological limitations of conventional machining process modeling have been examined. The paper concludes with a summary of future research directions in modeling and simulation of conventional metal machining processes.

Nitrocellulose (NC) membranes, as porous paper-like substrates with high protein-binding capabilities, are very popular in the field of point-of-care immunoassays. However, generating robust hydrophobic structures in NC membranes to fabricate microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) remains a great challenge. At present, the main method relies on an expensive wax printer. In addition, NC membranes very easy to adhere during the printing process due to electrostatic adsorption. Herein, we developed a facile, fast and low-cost strategy to fabricate μPADs in NC membranes by screen-printing polyurethane acrylate (PUA) as a barrier material for defining flow channels and reaction zones. Moreover, hydrophobic barriers based on UV-curable PUA can resist various surfactant solutions and organic solvents that are generally used in immunoassays and biochemical reactions. To validate the feasibility of this PUA-based NC membrane for immunoassays in point-of-care testing (POCT), we further designed and assembled a rotational paper-based analytical device for implementing a multiplexed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a simple manner. Using the proposed device under the optimal conditions, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) could be identified, with limits of detection of 136 pg/mL and 174 pg/mL, respectively, which are below the threshold values of these two cancer biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. We believe that this reliable device provides a promising platform for the diagnosis of disease based on ELISA or other related bioassays in limited settings or remote regions.

This study describes the development of electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) using carbon-based paste combining silicone glue and graphite powder. The ePADs were manufactured using the screen-printing technique, which consisted of depositing the conductive ink on a screencast on the paper surface. In addition, an alternative electrical connector was designed and 3D-printed to make the detection method cheaper, portable and reproducible. The morphological, structural, and electrochemical properties of the conductive material developed were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The mechanical pulping process is non‐linear and multivariable. To solve the related control problem, the dynamic model of the pulping process undergoes first approximate linearization around a temporary operating point which is updated at each iteration of the control algorithm. The linearization process relies on first‐order Taylor series expansion and on the computation of the Jacobian matrices of the state‐space model of the pulping process. For the approximately linearized description of the pulping process, a stabilizing H‐infinity feedback controller is designed. To compute the controller's feedback gains, an algebraic Riccati equation is solved at each time‐step of the control method. The stability properties of the control scheme are proven through Lyapunov analysis.

Designing hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts with high performance in alkaline conditions is important for reducing energy consumption during water electrolysis. This study reports an electrodeposition–calcination–electrodeposition strategy to construct the Ni–Mo–O/Ni₄Mo nanointerface on an N-doped carbon support derived from polyaniline on carbon fiber paper. The N-doped carbon support not only stabilizes the metal/metal oxide nanointerface but also generates more active intrinsic sites and electrical conductivity via the metal–N interaction. The obtained Ni–Mo–O/Ni₄Mo@NC displays a low overpotential of only 61 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–² for alkaline HER in 1 M KOH.

The industrial solid waste generation and its stockpile disposal have major environmental consequences. These consequences could be minimized through the solid waste application as a raw material in other industries. The current study focusses on the utilization of lime sludge with boiler ash synthesized nanosilica for production of belite based clinker at relatively lower temperature. Lime sludge was also used in combination with fly ash and boiler ash to check the synthesis of compounds at varying temperatures. Nanosilica was synthesized from pretreated boiler ash through alkali treatment and acid precipitation. The synthesized nanosilica has been characterized for specific surface area, crystallinity, surface functional groups and size. Three different mixtures, containing lime sludge with nanosilica, fly ash, and boiler ash are fired at temperatures ranging from 900 °C to 1200 °C and characterized for the synthesis of belite. Conventionally, belite is synthesized above 1200 °C, whereas the combined application of lime sludge and nanosilica reduces the temperature of belite synthesis to 900 °C without pre calcination or addition of any chemical stabilizer. In the case of lime sludge and boiler ash blend, belite formation takes place at the higher temperature (1100–1200 °C). Anorthite synthesis takes place in case of lime sludge and fly ash blend, due to high percentage of alumina present in fly ash. Lime sludge and nanosilica based belite clinker are used to develop newer cementitious binder. Hydration and strength properties of developed binder proved worthy as building materials. This study will present alternatives for sustainable utilization of lime sludge, fly ash and boiler ash in construction.

The textile industry is resource-intensive, which has a significant impact on global emissions and waste pollution. To meet the demand of textiles over a third of fibres used in manufacturing are sourced from fossil fuels. As the global demand for textiles continues to grow, manufacturers are having to seek innovative approaches to providing sustainable and regenerative cellulose fibres. However, the latest climate change pressures on the textile industry have uncovered grave environmental issues associated with traditional regenerative cellulose production, such as the viscose manufacturing process. The viscose process requires intensive use of hazardous chemicals which leads to water pollution and ecotoxicity. In addition, if forestry products are unsustainably sourced for this process, this can lead to resource scarcity and deforestation. To provide a holistic solution for mitigating these challenges this study uses the by-products of paper manufacturing dissolved in an ionic liquid to produce regenerated cellulose filaments. Paper mill sludge (PMS) is a cellulosic by-product typically used on animal bedding and land spreading. The material has been dissolved in an ionic liquid - 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate - with the aid of a co-solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) - and spun into continuous filaments for textile production. The mechanical properties of paper sludge filaments are found to be competitive with commercial viscose, which is promising for their drop-in replacement. It is also demonstrated that by increasing the concentration of the PMS from 9% to 12.4%, an improvement of the filament properties can be achieved; an increase in modulus from ∼19 GPa to ∼26 GPa and strength from ∼223 MPa to ∼282 MPa. These values are shown to be competitive with other commercial, less sustainable, regenerated cellulose fibres.

The recycled paper industry produces tons of waste whose disposal is a cost for industry and the environment. This research examines the suitability of de-inked paper sludge (DPS), after pelletization, as a sustainable alternative component to a peat-based growing media, creating ideal root conditions for tree development (e.g. high water storage, low compaction). DPS, tested on Lepidium sativum L. germination, did not show toxicity effects. Three species, Quercus ilex L., Lagerstroemia indica L. and Prunus serrulata “Kanzan”, were planted in 40 cm O pots filled with a control (peat, pumice and zeolite) and the experimental substrate (compost, DPS pellets, pumice and zeolite). After two years in the nursery, the trees were planted in situ. The physical and chemical properties of substrates were analyzed. Plant morphological and physiological parameters were monitored: trunk diameter, leaf dry matter, leaf nitrogen, chlorophyll, and photosynthetic efficiency. The new substrate showed higher Corg (+135%), total N (+73%) and easily available water (+19%), compared to the control substrate used in the nursery. In this new substrate, the trees showed similar radial growth values to the control in the nursery and after transplanting in situ improved their photosynthetic performance in terms of quantum yield of photosystem II (+36%, and +29% in P. serrulata and L. indica, respectively) and electron transport rate (+39%, +25%, and +32% in P. serrulata, Q. ilex and L. indica, respectively). Pelletization represents an attractive amendment for growing media, which enhances the plant’s physiological health status. This study proposes alternative recovery methods for paper industry waste with low environmental impact. As the process is developed locally, it should also contribute to reducing energy-related CO2 emissions from transport.
