Search

Gravitational lensing of fast radio bursts (FRBs) offers an exciting avenue for several cosmological applications. However, it is not yet clear how many such events future surveys will detect nor how to optimally find them. We use the known properties of FRBs to forecast detection rates of gravitational lensing on delay time-scales from microseconds to years, corresponding to lens masses spanning 15 orders of magnitude. We highlight the role of the FRB redshift distribution on our ability to observe gravitational lensing. We consider cosmological lensing of FRBs by stars in foreground galaxies and show that strong stellar lensing will dominate on microsecond time-scales. Upcoming surveys such as DSA-2000 and CHORD will constrain the fraction of dark matter in compact objects (e.g. primordial black holes) and may detect millilensing events from intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) or small dark matter halos. Coherent all-sky monitors will be able to detect longer-duration lensing events from massive galaxies, in addition to short time-scale lensing. Finally, we propose a new application of FRB gravitational lensing that will measure directly the circumgalactic medium of intervening galaxies.

We combine the isothermal Jeans model and the model of adiabatic halo contraction into a simple semi-analytic procedure for computing the density profile of self-interacting dark-matter (SIDM) haloes with the gravitational influence from the inhabitant galaxies. We show that the model agrees well with cosmological SIDM simulations over the entire core-forming stage and up to the onset of gravothermal core-collapse. Using this model, we show that the halo response to baryons is more diverse in SIDM than in CDM and depends sensitively on galaxy size, a desirable link in the context of the structural diversity of bright dwarf galaxies. The fast speed of the method facilitates analyses that would be challenging for numerical simulations -- notably, 1) we quantify the SIDM halo response as functions of the baryonic properties, on a fine mesh grid spanned by the baryon-to-total-mass ratio, $M_{\rm b}/M_{\rm vir}$, and galaxy compactness, $r_{1/2}/R_{\rm vir}$; 2) we show with high statistical precision that for typical Milky-Way-like systems, the SIDM profiles are similar to their CDM counterparts; and 3) we delineate the regime of gravothermal core-collapse in the $M_{\rm b}/M_{\rm vir}$-$r_{1/2}/R_{\rm vir}$ space, for a given cross section and a given halo concentration. Finally, we compare the isothermal Jeans model with the more sophisticated gravothermal fluid model, and show that the former yields faster core formation and agrees better with cosmological simulations. We attribute the difference to whether the target CDM halo is used as a boundary condition or as the initial condition for the gravothermal evolution, and thus comment on possible future improvements of the fluid model. The current generation of galaxy simulations can resolve individual giant molecular clouds, the progenitors of dense star clusters. But the evolutionary fate of these young massive clusters, and whether they can become the old globular clusters (GCs) observed in many galaxies, is determined by a complex interplay of internal dynamical processes and external galactic effects. We present the first star-by-star $N$-body models of massive ($N\sim10^5-10^7$) star clusters formed in a FIRE-2 MHD simulation of a Milky Way-mass galaxy, with the relevant initial conditions and tidal forces extracted from the cosmological simulation. We select 895 ($\sim 30\%$) of the YMCs with $ > 6\times10^4M_{\odot}$ from Grudić et al.~2022 and integrate them to $z=0$ using the Cluster Monte Carlo Code, \texttt{CMC}. This procedure predicts a MW-like system with 148 GCs, predominantly formed during the early, bursty mode of star formation. Our GCs are younger, less massive, and more core-collapsed than clusters in the Milky Way or M31. This results from the assembly history and age-metallicity relationship of the host galaxy: younger clusters are preferentially born in stronger tidal fields and initially retain fewer stellar-mass black holes, causing them to lose mass faster and reach core collapse sooner than older GCs. Our results suggest that the masses and core/half-light radii of GCs are shaped not only by internal dynamical processes, but also by the specific evolutionary history of their host galaxies. Models of stellar population synthesis (SPS) are the fundamental tool that relates the physical properties of a galaxy to its spectral energy distribution (SED). In this paper, we present DSPS: a python package for stellar population synthesis. All of the functionality in DSPS is implemented natively in the JAX library for automatic differentiation, and so our predictions for galaxy photometry are fully differentiable, and directly inherit the performance benefits of JAX, including portability onto GPUs. DSPS also implements several novel features, such as i) a flexible empirical model for stellar metallicity that incorporates correlations with stellar age, and ii) support for the diffstar model that provides a physically-motivated connection between the star formation history of a galaxy (SFH) and the mass assembly of its underlying dark matter halo. We detail a set of theoretical techniques for using autodiff to calculate gradients of predictions for galaxy SEDs with respect to SPS parameters that control a range of physical effects, including SFH, stellar metallicity, nebular emission, and dust attenuation. When forward modeling the colors of a synthetic galaxy population, we find that DSPS can provide a factor of 5 speedup over standard SPS codes on a CPU, and a factor of 300-400 on a modern GPU. When coupled with gradient-based techniques for optimization and inference, DSPS makes it practical to conduct expansive likelihood analyses of simulation-based models of the galaxy--halo connection that fully forward model galaxy spectra and photometry., Comment: 13 pages, 2 appendices. Where the cosmic baryons lie in and around galactic dark matter halos is only weakly constrained. We develop a method to quickly paint on models for their distribution. Our approach uses the statistical advantages of $N$-body simulations, while painting on the profile of gas around individual halos in ways that can be motivated by semi-analytic models or zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies. Possible applications of the algorithm include extragalactic dispersion measures to fast radio bursts (FRBs), the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, baryonic effects on weak lensing, and cosmic metal enrichment. As an initial application, we use this tool to investigate how the baryonic profile of foreground galactic-mass halos affects the statistics of the dispersion measure (DM) towards cosmological FRBs. We show that the distribution of DM is sensitive to the distribution of baryons in galactic halos, with viable gas profile models having significantly different probability distributions for DM to a given redshift. We also investigate the requirements to statistically measure the circumgalactic electron profile for FRB analyses that stack DM with impact parameter to foreground galaxies, quantifying the size of the contaminating "two-halo" term from correlated systems and the number of FRBs for a high significance detection. As we observe a rapidly growing number of astrophysical transients, we learn more about the diverse host galaxy environments in which they occur. Host galaxy information can be used to purify samples of cosmological Type Ia supernovae, uncover the progenitor systems of individual classes, and facilitate low-latency follow-up of rare and peculiar explosions. In this work, we develop a novel data-driven methodology to simulate the time-domain sky that includes detailed modeling of the probability density function for multiple transient classes conditioned on host galaxy magnitudes, colours, star formation rates, and masses. We have designed these simulations to optimize photometric classification and analysis in upcoming large synoptic surveys. We integrate host galaxy information into the SNANA simulation framework to construct the Simulated Catalogue of Optical Transients and Correlated Hosts (SCOTCH), a publicly-available catalogue of 5 million idealized transient light curves in LSST passbands and their host galaxy properties over the redshift range $0, Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures. A key unknown of the Milky Way (MW) satellites is their orbital history, and, in particular, the time they were accreted onto the MW system since it marks the point where they experience a multitude of environmental processes. We present a new methodology for determining infall times, namely using a neural network (NN) algorithm. The NN is trained on MW-analogues in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation to predict if a dwarf galaxy is at first infall or a backsplash galaxy and to infer its infall time. The resulting NN predicts with 85\% accuracy if a galaxy currently outside the virial radius is a backsplash satellite and determines the infall times with a typical 68\% confidence interval of 4.4 Gyrs. Applying the NN to MW dwarfs with Gaia EDR3 proper motions, we find that all of the dwarfs within 300 kpc had been inside the Galactic halo. The overall MW satellite accretion rate agrees well with the theoretical prediction except for late times when the MW shows a second peak at a lookback time of 1.5 Gyrs corresponding to the infall of the LMC and its satellites. We also find that the quenching times for ultrafaint dwarfs show no significant correlation with infall time and thus supporting the hypothesis that they were quenched during reionisation. In contrast, dwarfs with stellar masses above $10^5~M_\odot$ are found to be consistent with environmental quenching inside the Galactic halo, with star-formation ceasing on average at $0.5^{+0.9}_{-1.2}$ Gyrs after infall., 13 pages, 7 figures, appendix: 4 pages, published version

A fundamental requirement for reionizing the Universe is that a sufficient fraction of the ionizing photons emitted by galaxies successfully escapes into the intergalactic medium. However, due to the scarcity of high-redshift observational data, the sources driving reionization remain uncertain. In this work we calculate the ionizing escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc}$) of reionization-era galaxies from the state-of-the-art THESAN simulations, which combine an accurate radiation-hydrodynamic solver AREPO-RT with the well-tested IllustrisTNG galaxy formation model to self-consistently simulate both small-scale galaxy physics and large-scale reionization throughout a large patch of the universe ($L_{\rm box} = 95.5\,\rm cMpc$). This allows the formation of numerous massive haloes ($M_{\rm halo} \gtrsim 10^{10}\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$), which are often statistically underrepresented in previous studies but are believed to be important to achieve rapid reionization. We find that low-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm stars} \lesssim 10^7\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$) are the main drivers of reionization above $z \gtrsim 7$, while high-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm stars} \gtrsim 10^8\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$) dominate the escaped ionizing photon budget at lower redshifts. The variation in halo escape fractions decreases for higher-mass haloes, which can be understood from the more settled galactic structure, SFR stability, and fraction of sightlines within each halo significantly contributing to the escaped flux. We show that dust is capable of reducing the escape fractions of massive galaxies, but the impact on the global $f_{\rm esc}$ depends on the dust model. We present a new set of cosmological zoom-in simulations of a MW-like galaxy which for the first time include elastic velocity-dependent self interacting dark matter (SIDM) and IllustrisTNG physics. With these simulations we investigate the interaction between SIDM and baryons and its effects on the galaxy evolution process. We also introduce a novel set of modified DMO simulations which can reasonably replicate the effects of fully realized hydrodynamics on the DM halo while simplifying the analysis and lowering the computational cost. We find that baryons change the thermal structure of the central region of the halo to a greater extent than the SIDM scatterings for MW-like galaxies. Additionally, we find that the new thermal structure of the MW-like halo causes SIDM to create cuspier central densities rather than cores because the SIDM scatterings remove the thermal support by transferring heat away from the center of the galaxy. We find that this effect, caused by baryon contraction, begins to affect galaxies with a stellar mass of $10^8$ M$_\odot$ and increases in strength to the MW-mass scale. This implies that any simulations used to constrain the SIDM cross sections for galaxies with stellar masses between $10^8$ and at least $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ will require baryons to make accurate predictions., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We employ several galaxy formation models, in particular, L-GALAXIES, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE, as well as observational samples from SDSS and DESI, to investigate galactic conformity, the observed large-scale correlation between the star-formation properties of central (primary) galaxies and those of their neighbours. To analyse the models and observations uniformly, we introduce CENSAT, a new algorithm to define whether a galaxy is a central or a satellite system based on an isolation criterion. We find that the conformity signal is present, up to at least 5 Mpc from the centres of low- and intermediate-mass centrals in the latest version of L-GALAXIES (Ayromlou et al. 2021), IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE, as well as in SDSS and DESI observational samples. In comparison, the conformity signal is substantially weaker in an older version of L-GALAXIES (Henriques et al. 2020). One of the main differences between this older model and the other models is its neglect of ram-pressure stripping of the gas reservoirs of galaxies except within the boundaries of massive cluster haloes. Our observational comparisons demonstrate that this difference significantly affects the observed large-scale conformity signal. Furthermore, by examining the contribution of backsplash, fly-by, central, and satellite galaxies to the conformity signal, we show that much, but not all, of it arises from primary galaxies near massive systems. Remaining tensions between the models and observations may be solved by modifying the physical prescriptions for how feedback processes affect the distribution and kinematics of gas and the environment around galaxies out to scales of several Megaparsecs., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

As one of Stage IV space-based telescopes, China Space Station Telescope (CSST) can perform photometric and spectroscopic surveys simultaneously to efficiently explore the Universe in extreme precision. In this work, we investigate several powerful CSST cosmological probes, including cosmic shear, galaxy-galaxy lensing, photometric and spectroscopic galaxy clustering, and number counts of galaxy clusters, and study the capability of these probes by forecasting the results of joint constraints on the cosmological parameters. By referring to real observational results, we generate mock data and estimate the measured errors based on CSST observational and instrumental designs. To study the systematical effects on the results, we also consider a number of systematics in CSST photometric and spectroscopic surveys, such as the intrinsic alignment, shear calibration uncertainties, photometric redshift uncertainties, galaxy bias, non-linear effects, instrumental effects, etc. The Fisher matrix method is used to derive the constraint results from individual or joint surveys on the cosmological and systematical parameters. We find that the joint constraints by including all these CSST cosmological probes can significantly improve the results from current observations by one order of magnitude at least, which gives $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$ $, Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Increasingly, uncertainties in predictions from galaxy formation simulations (at sub-Milky Way masses) are dominated by uncertainties in stellar evolution inputs. In this paper, we present the full set of updates from the FIRE-2 version of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project code, to the next version, FIRE-3. While the transition from FIRE-1 to FIRE-2 focused on improving numerical methods, here we update the stellar evolution tracks used to determine stellar feedback inputs, e.g. stellar mass-loss (O/B and AGB), spectra (luminosities and ionization rates), and supernova rates (core-collapse and Ia), as well as detailed mass-dependent yields. We also update the low-temperature cooling and chemistry, to enable improved accuracy at $T \lesssim 10^{4}\,$K and densities $n\gg 1\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$, and the meta-galactic ionizing background. All of these synthesize newer empirical constraints on these quantities and updated stellar evolution and yield models from a number of groups, addressing different aspects of stellar evolution. To make the updated models as accessible as possible, we provide fitting functions for all of the relevant updated tracks, yields, etc, in a form specifically designed so they can be directly 'plugged in' to existing galaxy formation simulations. We also summarize the default FIRE-3 implementations of 'optional' physics, including spectrally-resolved cosmic rays and supermassive black hole growth and feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures. Hydrogen emission lines can provide extensive information about star-forming galaxies in both the local and high-redshift Universe. We present a detailed Lyman continuum (LyC), Lyman-alpha (Ly{\alpha}), and Balmer line (H{\alpha} and H\b{eta}) radiative transfer study of a high-resolution isolated Milky-Way simulation using the Arepo-RT radiation hydrodynamics code with the SMUGGLE galaxy formation model. The realistic framework includes stellar feedback, non-equilibrium thermochemistry, and dust grain evolution in the interstellar medium (ISM). We extend our Cosmic Ly{\alpha} Transfer (COLT) code with photoionization equilibrium Monte Carlo radiative transfer for self-consistent end-to-end (non-)resonant line predictions. Accurate LyC reprocessing to recombination emission requires modelling pre-absorption by dust (27.5%), helium ionization (8.7%), and anisotropic escape fractions (7.9%), as these reduce the available budget for hydrogen line emission (55.9%). We investigate the role of the multiphase dusty ISM, disc geometry, gas kinematics, and star formation activity in governing the physics of emission and escape, focusing on the time variability, gas phase structure, and spatial, spectral, and viewing angle dependence of the emergent photons. Isolated disc simulations are well-suited for comprehensive observational comparisons with local H{\alpha} surveys, but would require a proper cosmological circumgalactic medium (CGM) environment as well as less dust absorption and rotational broadening to serve as analogs for high-redshift Ly{\alpha} emitting galaxies. We present constraints on primordial B modes from large angular scale cosmic microwave background polarisation anisotropies measured with the Planck satellite. To remove Galactic polarised foregrounds, we use a Bayesian parametric component separation method, modelling synchrotron radiation as a power law and thermal dust emission as a modified blackbody. This method propagates uncertainties from the foreground cleaning into the noise covariance matrices of the maps. We construct two likelihoods: (i) a semi-analytical cross-spectrum-based likelihood-approximation scheme (momento) and (ii) an exact polarisation-only pixel-based likelihood (pixlike). Since momento is based on cross-spectra it is statistically less powerful than pixlike, but is less sensitive to systematic errors correlated across frequencies. Both likelihoods give a tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, that is consistent with zero from low multipole (2, 10 pages, 7 figures

Precision analysis of galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing images provides a unique way of characterizing small-scale dark matter halos, and could allow us to uncover the fundamental properties of dark matter's constituents. Recently, gravitational imaging techniques made it possible to detect a few heavy subhalos. However, gravitational lenses contain numerous subhalos and line-of-sight halos, whose subtle imprint is extremely difficult to detect individually. Existing methods for marginalizing over this large population of sub-threshold perturbers to infer population-level parameters are typically computationally expensive, or require compressing observations into hand-crafted summary statistics, such as a power spectrum of residuals. Here, we present the first analysis pipeline to combine parametric lensing models and a recently-developed neural simulation-based inference technique called truncated marginal neural ratio estimation (TMNRE) to constrain the warm dark matter halo mass function cutoff scale directly from multiple lensing images. Through a proof-of-concept application to simulated data, we show that our approach enables empirically testable inference of the dark matter cutoff mass through marginalization over a large population of realistic perturbers that would be undetectable on their own, and over lens and source parameters uncertainties. To obtain our results, we combine the signal contained in a set of images with Hubble Space Telescope resolution. Our results suggest that TMNRE can be a powerful approach to put tight constraints on the mass of warm dark matter in the multi-keV regime, which will be relevant both for existing lensing data and in the large sample of lenses that will be delivered by near-future telescopes., 15 pages, 11 figures; Updated to match version published in MNRAS

We study evolution of single subhaloes with their masses of $\sim10^9 M_\odot$ in a Milky-Way-sized host halo for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models. We perform dark-matter-only N-body simulations of dynamical evolution of individual subhaloes orbiting its host by varying self-scattering cross sections (including a velocity-dependent scenario), subhalo orbits, and internal properties of the subhalo. We calibrate a gravothermal fluid model to predict time evolution in spherical mass density profiles of isolated SIDM haloes with the simulations. We find that tidal effects of SIDM subhaloes can be described with a framework developed for the case of collision-less cold dark matter (CDM), but a shorter typical time scale for the mass loss due to tidal stripping is required to explain our SIDM simulation results. As long as the cross section is less than $\sim10\, \mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{g}$ and initial states of subhaloes are set within a $2\sigma$-level scatter at redshifts of $\sim2$ predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, our simulations do not exhibit a prominent feature of gravothermal collapse in the subhalo central density for 10 Gyr. We develop a semi-analytic model of SIDM subhaloes in a time-evolving density core of the host with tidal stripping and self-scattering ram pressure effects. Our semi-analytic approach provides a simple, efficient and physically-intuitive prediction of SIDM subhaloes, but further improvements are needed to account for baryonic effects in the host and the gravothermal instability accelerated by tidal stripping effects., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. This study explores the gravitational lensing effects of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxy clusters. While the presence of central SMBHs in galaxies is firmly established, recent work from high-resolution simulations predict the existence of an additional population of wandering SMBHs. Though the masses of these SMBHs are a minor perturbation on the larger scale and individual galaxy scale dark matter components in the cluster, they can impact statistical lensing properties and individual lensed image configurations. Probing for these potentially observable signatures, we find that SMBHs imprint detectable signatures in rare, higher-order strong lensing image configurations although they do not manifest any statistically significant detectable evidence in either the magnification distribution or the integrated shear profile. Investigating specific lensed image geometries, we report that a massive, near point-like, potential of an SMBH causes the following detectable effects: (i) image splitting leading to the generation of extra images; (ii) positional and magnification asymmetries in multiply imaged systems; and (iii) the apparent disappearance of a lensed counter-image. Of these, image splitting inside the cluster tangential critical curve, is the most prevalent notable observational signature. We demonstrate these possibilities in two cases of observed giant arcs in $SGAS\,J003341.5+024217$ and $RX\,J1347.5-1145$, wherein specific image configurations seen can be reproduced with SMBHs. Future observations with high-resolution instrumentation (e.g. MAVIS-Very Large Telescope, MICADO-Extremely Large Telescope, and the upgraded ngVLA, along with data from the \textit{Euclid} \& \textit{Nancy Grace Roman} Space Telescopes and the Rubin LSST Observatory are likely to allow us to probe these unique yet rare SMBHs lensing signatures., 12 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS. Dixon et al., We use stacked spectra of the host galaxies of photometrically identified Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to search for correlations between Hubble diagram residuals and the spectral properties of the host galaxies. The velocity profile of galaxies around voids is a key ingredient for redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements made using the void-galaxy correlation function. In this paper we use simulations to test whether the velocity profile of the tracers used to find the voids matches the velocity profile of the dark matter around these voids. A mismatch is expected and found in the inner part of voids, where tracers are very sparse. We discuss how this difference is caused by a selection effect where the void centre positions are correlated to the particular realization of the sparse tracers and their spatial distribution. In turn, this then affects the RSD void-galaxy correlation analysis. We show this by evaluating the Jacobian of the real to redshift space mapping using the tracer or matter velocity profile. Differences of the order of 20\% in the velocity profile translate into differences of the order of few percent in the Jacobian. This small discrepancy propagates to the monopole and quadrupole of the void-tracer correlation function, producing modifications of comparable magnitude to those from changes in $f\sigma_8$ at the level of the statistical uncertainties from current analyses., Comment: Author's Accepted Manuscript

The discovery of faint FR~I radio jets in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5322 is reported here using 144 MHz LOFAR image. The jets have an angular extent of $\sim40$ arcmin or a projected physical extent of $\sim350$ kpc. The faint jets remain well collimated and disappear in the intergalactic medium, without any visible hotspot or radio lobes. The jets detected up to $\sim20$ kpc extent at higher frequencies are relatively bright within the optical extent of the galaxy but become faint abruptly outside, where detection is made only in the LOFAR image. The total radio luminosity of the galaxy at 144 MHz is estimated to be $3.7(\pm0.4)\times10^{22}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The 144 MHz radio luminosity of the faint jets outside the optical extent is estimated to be $7.1(\pm2.0)\times10^{21}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The extent of the jets for its radio luminosity is abnormally large when compared to the general population of radio galaxies. It makes NGC 5322 a member of a rare population of radio galaxies, previously not detected in other radio surveys. A combined effect of stellar core depletion and low-density environment around the jets, inferred from previous studies in other wave-bands, resulting into weak entrainment of surrounding material to the jets could be responsible for its large size despite a low radio luminosity., Comment: MNRAS submitted; 5 pages, 4 figures; comments welcome

The structural and dynamic properties of the dark matter halos, though an important ingredient in understanding large-scale structure formation, require more conservative particle resolution than those required by halo mass alone in a simulation. This reduces the parameter space of the simulations, more severely for high-redshift and large-volume mocks which are required by the next-generation large sky surveys. Here, we incorporate redshift and cosmology dependence into an algorithm that assigns accurate halo properties such as concentration, spin, velocity, and spatial distribution to the sub-resolution haloes in a simulation. By focusing on getting the right correlations with halo mass and local tidal anisotropy $\alpha$ measured at $4 \times$ halo radius, our method will also recover the correlations of these small scale structural properties with the large-scale environment, i.e., the halo assembly bias at all scales greater than $5 \times$ halo radius. We find that the distribution of halo properties is universal with redshift and cosmology. By applying the algorithm to a large volume simulation $(600 h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})$, we can access the $30-500$ particle haloes, thus gaining an order of magnitude in halo mass and two to three orders of magnitude in number density at $z=2-4$. The relation between the integrated thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) $y$-decrement versus halo mass ($Y$--$M$) can potentially constrain galaxy formation models, if theoretical and observational systematics can be properly assessed. We investigate the $Y$--$M$ relation in the SIMBA and IllustrisTNG-100 cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, quantifying the effects of feedback, line-of-sight projection, and beam convolution. We find that SIMBA's AGN jet feedback generates strong deviations from self-similar expectations for the $Y$--$M$ relation, especially at $M_{500}, 14 pages, 7 figures. Reionization of helium is expected to occur at redshifts $z\sim3$ and have important consequences for quasar populations, galaxy formation, and the morphology of the intergalactic medium, but there is little known empirically about the process. Here we show that kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) tomography, based on the combination of CMB measurements and galaxy surveys, can be used to infer the primordial helium abundance as well as the time and duration of helium reionization. We find a high-significance detection at ${\sim10\sigma}$ can be expected from Vera Rubin Observatory and CMB-S4 in the near future. The Cosmology and Astrophysics with Machine Learning Simulations (CAMELS) project was developed to combine cosmology with astrophysics through thousands of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and machine learning. CAMELS contains 4233 cosmological simulations, 2049 N-body simulations, and 2184 state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations that sample a vast volume in parameter space. In this paper, we present the CAMELS public data release, describing the characteristics of the CAMELS simulations and a variety of data products generated from them, including halo, subhalo, galaxy, and void catalogs, power spectra, bispectra, Lyα spectra, probability distribution functions, halo radial profiles, and X-rays photon lists. We also release over 1000 catalogs that contain billions of galaxies from CAMELS-SAM: a large collection of N-body simulations that have been combined with the Santa Cruz semianalytic model. We release all the data, comprising more than 350 terabytes and containing 143,922 snapshots, millions of halos, galaxies, and summary statistics. We study the impact of the dark matter velocity distribution modelling on signals from velocity-dependent dark matter annihilation in Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Using the high resolution APOSTLE simulations, we identify analogues corresponding to Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and from these directly determine the dark matter pair-wise relative velocity distribution, and compare to best-fitting Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution models. For three velocity-dependent annihilation models, p-wave, d-wave, and the Sommerfeld model, we quantify the errors introduced when using the Maxwell-Boltzmann parameterization. We extract a simple power-law relation between the maximum circular velocity of the dwarf spheroidal analogue and the peak speed of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. We show that this relation can be used to accurately calculate the dark matter relative velocity distribution, and find that it allows us to estimate the dark matter annihilation signal without the need to directly calculate the relative velocity distribution for each galaxy. The scatter in the J-factors calculated from the analogues dominates the uncertainty obtained when compared to the J-factor as determined from the observational data for each dwarf spheroidal, with the largest scatter from d-wave models and the smallest from Sommerfeld models., 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Primordial black holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe constitute an attractive candidate for dark matter. Within the gaseous environment of the interstellar medium, PBHs with accretion disks naturally launch outflows such as winds and jets. PBHs with significant spin can sustain powerful relativistic jets and generate associated cocoons. Jets and winds can efficiently deposit their kinetic energies and heat the surrounding gas through shocks. Focusing on the Leo T dwarf galaxy, we demonstrate that these considerations can provide novel tests of PBHs over a significant $\sim 10^{-2} M_{\odot} - 10^6 M_{\odot}$ mass range, including the parameter space associated with gravitational wave observations by the LIGO and VIRGO Collaborations. Observing the morphology of emission could allow to distinguish between jet and wind contributions, and hence indirectly detect spinning PBHs., 10 pages, 4 figures

The merger rate density evolution of binary compact objects and the properties of their host galaxies carry crucial information to understand the sources of gravitational waves. Here, we present galaxyRate, a new code that estimates the merger rate density of binary compact objects and the properties of their host galaxies, based on observational scaling relations. We generate our synthetic galaxies according to the galaxy stellar mass function. We estimate the metallicity according to both the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) and the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR). Also, we take into account galaxy-galaxy mergers and the evolution of the galaxy properties from the formation to the merger of the binary compact object. We find that the merger rate density changes dramatically depending on the choice of the star-forming galaxy main sequence, especially in the case of binary black holes (BBHs) and black hole neutron star systems (BHNSs). The slope of the merger rate density of BBHs and BHNSs is steeper if we assume the MZR with respect to the FMR, because the latter predicts a shallower decrease of metallicity with redshift. In contrast, binary neutron stars (BNSs) are only mildly affected by both the galaxy main sequence and metallicity relation. Overall, BBHs and BHNSs tend to form in low-mass metal-poor galaxies and merge in high-mass metal-rich galaxies, while BNSs form and merge in massive galaxies. The cross-correlation between 21-cm intensity mapping experiments and photometric surveys of galaxies (or any other cosmological tracer with a broad radial kernel) is severely degraded by the loss of long-wavelength radial modes due to Galactic foreground contamination. Higher-order correlators are able to restore some of these modes due to the non-linear coupling between them and the local small-scale clustering induced by gravitational collapse. We explore the possibility of recovering information from the bispectrum between a photometric galaxy sample and an intensity mapping experiment, in the context of the clustering-redshifts technique. We demonstrate that the bispectrum is able to calibrate the redshift distribution of the photometric sample to the required accuracy of future experiments such as the Rubin Observatory, using future single-dish and interferometric 21-cm observations, in situations where the two-point function is not able to do so due to foreground contamination. We also show how this calibration is affected by the photometric redshift width $\sigma_{z,0}$ and maximum scale $k_{\mathrm{max}}$. We find that it is important to reach scales $k \gtrsim 0.3\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, with the constraints saturating at around $k\sim 1\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ for next-generation experiments., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

We investigate using three-point statistics in constraining the galaxy–halo connection. We show that for some galaxy samples, the constraints on the halo occupation distribution parameters are dominated by the three-point function signal (over its two-point counterpart). We demonstrate this on mock catalogues corresponding to the Luminous red galaxies (LRGs), Emission-line galaxies (ELGs), and quasars (QSOs) targeted by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Survey. The projected three-point function for triangle sides less up to 20 h−1 Mpc measured from a cubic Gpc of data can constrain the characteristic minimum mass of the LRGs with a preci sion of 0.46 per cent. For comparison, similar constraints from the projected two-point function are 1.55 per cent. The improvements for the ELGs and QSOs targets are more modest. In the case of the QSOs, it is caused by the high shot-noise of the sample, and in the case of the ELGs, it is caused by the range of halo masses of the host haloes. The most time-consuming part of our pipeline is the measurement of the three-point functions. We forecast the ability of future-generation experiments to detect the fine-structure lines of the carbon and oxygen ions, [CII] and [OIII] in intensity mapping (IM) from the Epoch of Reionization ($z \sim 6-8$). Combining the latest empirically derived constraints relating the luminosity of the [OIII] line to the ambient star-formation rate, and using them in conjunction with previously derived estimates for the abundance of [CII] in haloes, we predict the expected auto-correlation IM signal to be observed using new experiments based on the Fred Young Submillimetre Telescope (FYST) and the balloon-borne facility, Experiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) over $z \sim 5.3 - 7$. We describe how improvements to both the ground-based and balloon-based surveys in the future will enable a cross-correlation signal to be detected at $\sim$ 10-30 $\sigma$ over $z \sim 5.3 - 7$. Finally, we propose a space-based mission targeting the [OIII] 88 and 52 $\mu$m lines along with the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line, configured to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of cross-correlation measurements. Systematic uncertainties in the mass measurement of galaxy clusters limit the cosmological constraining power of future surveys that will detect more than $10^5$ clusters. Previously, we argued that aperture masses can be inferred more accurately and precisely than 3D masses without loss of cosmological constraining power. Here, we use the Baryons and Haloes of Massive Systems (BAHAMAS) cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations to show that aperture masses are also less sensitive to changes in mass caused by galaxy formation processes. For haloes with $m_\mathrm{200m,dmo} > 10^{14} \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$, binned by their 3D halo mass, baryonic physics affects aperture masses and 3D halo masses similarly when measured within apertures similar to the halo virial radius, reaching a maximum reduction of $\approx 3 \, \%$. For lower-mass haloes, $10^{13.5} < m_\mathrm{200m,dmo} / (h^{-1} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot) < 10^{14}$, and aperture sizes $\sim 1 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{cMpc}$, representative of weak lensing observations, the aperture mass is consistently reduced less ($\lesssim 5 \, \%$) than the 3D halo mass ($\lesssim 10 \, \%$ for $m_\mathrm{200m}$). The halo mass reduction evolves only slightly, by up to $2$ percentage points, between redshift 0.25 and 1 for both the aperture mass and $m_\mathrm{200m}$. Varying the strength of the simulated feedback so the mean simulated hot gas fraction covers the observed scatter inferred from X-ray observations, we find that the aperture mass is consistently less biased than the 3D halo mass, by up to $2 \, $ percentage points at $m_\mathrm{200m,dmo} = 10^{14} \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$. We set out to rederive the 8 Hubble parameter values obtained from estimated relative galaxy ages by Simon et al. [Physical Review D, 71, 123001 (2005)]. We find that to obtain the level of precision claimed in $H(z)$, unrealistically small galaxy age uncertainties have to be assumed. Also, some parameter values will be correlated. In our analysis we find that the uncertainties in the Hubble parameter values are significantly larger when 8 independent $H(z)$ are obtained using Monte Carlo sampling. Smaller uncertainties can be obtained using Gaussian processes, but at the cost of strongly correlated results. Previously derived Faraday rotation constraints on the volume-filling intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) have used analytic models that made a range of simplifying assumptions about magnetic field evolution in the intergalactic medium and did not consider the effect of baryonic feedback on large-scale structures. In this work we revise existing Faraday rotation constraints on the IGMF using a numerical model of the intergalactic medium from the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation that includes a sophisticated model of the baryonic feedback. We use the IllustrisTNG model to calculate the rotation measure and compare the resulting mean and median of the absolute value of the rotation measure with data from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). The numerical model of the intergalactic medium includes a full magneto-hydrodynamic model of the compressed primordial magnetic field as well as a model of the regions where the magnetic field is not primordial, but is rather produced by the process of baryonic feedback. Separating these two types of regions, we are able to assess the influence of the primordial magnetic field on the Faraday rotation signal. We find that by correcting for regions of compressed primordial field and accounting for the fact that part of the intergalactic medium is occupied by magnetic fields spread by baryonic feedback processes rather than by the primordial field relaxes the Faraday rotation bound by a factor of $\simeq 3$. Using the weak gravitational lensing data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC survey), we study the potential of different stellar mass estimates in tracing halo mass. We consider galaxies with $\log {M_{\star}/M_{\odot}}>11.5$ at 0.2 < z < 0.5 with carefully measured light profiles and clusters from the redMaPPer and CAMIRA richness-based algorithms. We devise a method (the "TopN" test) to evaluate the scatter in the halo mass-observable relation for different tracers and inter-compare halo mass proxies in four number density bins using stacked galaxy-galaxy lensing profiles. This test reveals three key findings. The stellar mass based on cModel photometry or aperture luminosity within R14.0$ and could be a better halo mass tracer at lower halo masses. Finally, using N-body simulations, we find that the lensing profiles of massive halos selected by M*[50,100] are consistent with the expectation for a sample without projection or mis-centering effects. On the other hand, Richness-selected clusters display an excess at R~1 Mpc in their lensing profiles, which may suggest a more significant impact from selection biases. These results suggest that Mstar-based tracers have distinct advantages in identifying massive halos, which could open up new avenues for cluster cosmology., 28 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, 7 appendices. We reanalyse observations of type Ia supernovae (SNe) and Cepheids used in the local determination of the Hubble constant and find strong evidence that SN standardisation in the calibration sample (galaxies with observed Cepheids) require a steeper slope of the colour correction than in the cosmological sample (galaxies in the Hubble flow). The colour correction in the calibration sample is consistent with being entirely due to an extinction correction due to dust with properties similar to that of the Milky Way (R_B~4.6+/-0.4) and there is no evidence for intrinsic scatter in the SN peak magnitudes. An immediate consequence of this finding is that the local measurement of the Hubble constant becomes dependent on the choice of SN reference colour, i.e., the colour of an unreddened SN. Specifically, the Hubble constant inferred from the same observations decreases gradually with the reference colour assumed in the SN standardisation. We recover the Hubble constant measured by SH0ES for the standard choice of reference colour (SALT2 colour parameter c=0) while for a reference colour which coincides with the blue end of the observed SN colour distribution (c~-0.13), the Hubble constant from Planck observations of the CMB (assuming a flat LCDM cosmological model) is recovered. These results are intriguing in that they may provide an avenue for resolving the Hubble tension. Extended, steep, and ultra-steep spectrum radio emission in a galaxy cluster is usually associated with recent mergers. Simulations show that radio phoenixes are aged radio galaxy lobes whose emission reactivates when a low Mach shock compresses it. A85 hosts a textbook example of a radio phoenix at about 320 kpc southwest of the cluster center. We present a new high resolution 325 MHz GMRT radio map illustrating this radio phoenix's complex and filamentary structure. The full extent of the radio structure is revealed for the first time from these radio images of A85. Using archival \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations, we applied an automated 2-D shock finder to the X-ray surface brightness and Adaptive Circular Binning (ACB) temperature maps which confirmed a bow shock at the location of the radio phoenix. We also compared the Mach number from the X-ray data with the radio-derived Mach number in the same region using multi-frequency radio observations and find that they are consistent within the 1$\sigma$ error level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (11 Pages, 6 Figures, 4 Tables)

In star-forming galaxies, the far-infrared (FIR) and radio-continuum luminosities obey a tight empirical relation over a large range of star-formation rates (SFR). We examine magneto-hydrodynamic galaxy simulations with cosmic rays (CRs), accounting for their advective and anisotropic diffusive transport. We show that gravitational collapse of the proto-galaxy generates a corrugated accretion shock, which injects turbulence and drives a small-scale magnetic dynamo. As the shock propagates outwards and the associated turbulence decays, the large velocity shear between the supersonically rotating cool disc with respect to the (partially) pressure-supported hot circumgalactic medium excites Kelvin-Helmholtz surface and body modes. Those inject turbulence and drive multiple small-scale dynamos, which exponentially amplify magnetic fields. They grow in scale to reach equipartition with thermal and CR energies in Milky Way-mass galaxies. In small galaxies, the magnetic energy saturates at the turbulent energy while it fails to reach equipartition with thermal and CR energies. We solve for steady-state spectra of CR protons, secondary electrons/positrons from hadronic CR-proton interactions with the interstellar medium, and primary shock-accelerated electrons at supernovae. The radio-synchrotron emission is dominated by primary electrons, irradiates the magnetised disc, bulge, and bubble-shaped magnetically-loaded outflows of our simulated Milky Way-mass galaxy. Our star-forming and star-bursting galaxies with saturated magnetic fields match the global FIR-radio correlation (FRC) across four orders of magnitude. Its intrinsic scatter arises due to (i) different magnetic saturation levels that result from different seed magnetic fields, (ii) different radio synchrotron luminosities for different specific SFRs at fixed SFR and (iii) a varying radio intensity with galactic inclination. We determine the error introduced in a joint halo model analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering observables when adopting the standard approximation of linear halo bias. Considering the Kilo-Degree Survey, we forecast that ignoring the non-linear halo bias would result in up to 5$\sigma$ offsets in the recovered cosmological parameters describing structure growth, $S_8$, and the matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\mathrm{m}}$. We examine the prospects for measurement of the Hubble parameter $H_0$ via observation of the secular parallax of other galaxies due to our own motion relative to the cosmic microwave background rest frame. Peculiar velocities make distance measurements to individual galaxies highly uncertain, but a survey sampling many galaxies can still yield a precise $H_0$ measurement. We use both a Fisher information formalism and simulations to forecast errors in $H_0$ from such surveys, marginalizing over the unknown peculiar velocities. The optimum survey observes $\sim 10^2$ galaxies within a redshift $z_\mathrm{max}=0.06$. The required errors on proper motion are comparable to those that can be achieved by Gaia and future astrometric instruments. The mass distribution of dark matter haloes is the result of the hierarchical growth of initial density perturbations through mass accretion and mergers. We use an interpretable machine-learning framework to provide physical insights into the origin of the spherically-averaged mass profile of dark matter haloes. We train a gradient-boosted-trees algorithm to predict the final mass profiles of cluster-sized haloes, and measure the importance of the different inputs provided to the algorithm. We find two primary scales in the initial conditions (ICs) that impact the final mass profile: the density at approximately the scale of the haloes' Lagrangian patch $R_L$ ($R\sim 0.7\, R_L$) and that in the large-scale environment ($R\sim 1.7~R_L$). The model also identifies three primary time-scales in the halo assembly history that affect the final profile: (i) the formation time of the virialized, collapsed material inside the halo, (ii) the dynamical time, which captures the dynamically unrelaxed, infalling component of the halo over its first orbit, (iii) a third, most recent time-scale, which captures the impact on the outer profile of recent massive merger events. While the inner profile retains memory of the ICs, this information alone is insufficient to yield accurate predictions for the outer profile. As we add information about the haloes' mass accretion history, we find a significant improvement in the predicted profiles at all radii. We explore the nature of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) in the hydrodynamic cosmological simulation TNG100 of the IllustrisTNG project, selecting a sample of LSBGs ($r$-band effective surface brightness $μ_r > 22.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) at $z=0$ over a wide range of stellar masses ($M_{\ast} = 10^{9}$-$10^{12}$ M$_\odot$). We find LSBGs of all stellar masses, although they are particularly prevalent at $M_{\ast} < 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. We show that the specific star formation rates of LSBGs are not significantly different from those of high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs) but, as a population, LSBGs are systematically less massive and more extended than HSBGs, and tend to display late-type morphologies according to a kinematic criterion. At fixed stellar mass, we find that haloes hosting LSBGs are systematically more massive and have a higher baryonic fraction than those hosting HSBGs. We find that LSBGs have higher stellar specific angular momentum and halo spin parameter values compared to HSBGs, as suggested by previous works. We track the evolution of these quantities back in time, finding that the spin parameters of the haloes hosting LSBGs and HSBGs exhibit a clear bifurcation at $z \sim 2$, which causes a similar separation in the evolutionary tracks of other properties such as galactic angular momentum and effective radius, ultimately resulting in the values observed at $z =$ 0. The higher values of specific stellar angular momentum and halo spin in LSBGs seem to be responsible for their extended nature, preventing material from collapsing into the central regions of the galaxies, also causing LSBGs to host less massive black holes at their centres., 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

While the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole is largely assumed entirely kinematic, there appears evidence that a part of it is primordial. Such possibility arises in models implying a tilt, interpreted as a dark flow, across the observable Universe. The kinematic nature of the entire CMB dipole can be probed using the dipole of cosmic backgrounds from galaxies after the last scattering. The near-IR cosmic infrared background (CIB) spectral energy distribution leads to an amplified dipole compared to the CMB. The CIB dipole is affected by galaxy clustering, decreasing with fainter, more distant galaxies, and by Solar System emissions and Galactic dust, which dominate the net CIB cosmological dipole in the optical/near-IR. We propose a technique that enables an accurate measurement of the kinematic near-IR CIB dipole. The CIB, effectively the integrated galaxy light (IGL), would be reconstructed from resolved galaxies in the forthcoming space-borne wide surveys covering four bands 0.9 to 2.5 micron. The galaxies will be sub-selected from the identified magnitude range where the dipole component from galaxy clustering is below the expected kinematic dipole. We present results from end-to-end simulations of observations designed to constrain the rate of change in the expansion history of the Universe using the redshift drift of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest absorption lines along the lines-of-sight toward bright quasars. For our simulations we take Lyman-$\alpha$ forest lines extracted from Keck/HIRES spectra of bright quasars at $z>3$, and compare the results from these real quasar spectra with mock spectra generated via Monte Carlo realizations. We use the results of these simulations to assess the potential for a dedicated observatory to detect redshift drift, and quantify the telescope and spectrograph requirements for these observations. Relative to Liske et al. (2008), two main refinements in the current work are inclusion of quasars from more recent catalogs and consideration of a realistic observing strategy for a dedicated redshift drift experiment that maximizes $\dot{v}/\sigma_{\dot{v}}$. We find that using a dedicated facility and our designed observing plan, the redshift drift can be detected at $3\sigma$ significance in 15 years with a 25m telescope, given a spectrograph with long term stability with $R=50,000$ and 25% total system efficiency. To achieve this significance, the optimal number of targets is four quasars, with observing time weighted based upon $\dot{v}/\sigma_{\dot{v}}$ and object visibility. This optimized strategy leads to a 9% decrease in the telescope diameter or a 6% decrease in the required time to achieve the same S/N as for the idealized case of uniformly distributing time to the same quasars., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the relations among the parameters of the hybrid Lagrangian bias expansion model, fitting biased auto and cross power spectra up to $k_{\rm max} = 0.7 \, h \, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. We consider $\sim 8000$ halo and galaxy samples, with different halo masses, redshifts, galaxy number densities, and varying the parameters of the galaxy formation model. Galaxy samples are obtained through state-of-the-art extended subhalo abundance matching techniques and include both stellar-mass and star-formation-rate selected galaxies. All of these synthetic galaxies samples are publicly available at https://bacco.dipc.org/galpk.html. We find that the hybrid Lagrangian bias model provides accurate fits to all of our halo and galaxy samples. The coevolution relations between galaxy bias parameters, although roughly compatible with those obtained for haloes, show systematic shifts and larger scatter. We explore possible sources of this difference in terms of dependence on halo occupation and assembly bias of each sample. We apply machine learning, a powerful method for uncovering complex correlations in high-dimensional data, to the galaxy-halo connection of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The mapping between galaxy and halo variables is stochastic in the absence of perfect information, but conventional machine learning models are deterministic and hence cannot capture its intrinsic scatter. To overcome this limitation, we design an ensemble of neural networks with a Gaussian loss function that predict probability distributions, allowing us to model statistical uncertainties in the galaxy-halo connection as well as its best-fit trends. We extract a number of galaxy and halo variables from the Horizon-AGN and IllustrisTNG100-1 simulations and quantify the extent to which knowledge of some subset of one enables prediction of the other. This allows us to identify the key features of the galaxy-halo connection and investigate the origin of its scatter in various projections. We find that while halo properties beyond mass account for up to 50 per cent of the scatter in the halo-to-stellar mass relation, the prediction of stellar half-mass radius or total gas mass is not substantially improved by adding further halo properties. We also use these results to investigate semi-analytic models for galaxy size in the two simulations, finding that assumptions relating galaxy size to halo size or spin are not successful., 20 pages, 11 figures. We present a retuning of the IllustrisTNG baryonic physics model which can be used to run large-box realistic cosmological simulations with a lower resolution. This new model employs a lowered gas density threshold for star formation and reduced energy releases by stellar and black hole feedback. These changes ensure that our simulations can produce sufficient star formation to closely match the observed stellar and gas properties of galaxies and galaxy clusters, despite having $\sim$160 times lower mass resolution than the simulations used to tune the fiducial IllustrisTNG model. Using the retuned model, we have simulated Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity within a $301.75h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ box. This is, to date, the largest simulation that incorporates both screened modified gravity and full baryonic physics, offering a large sample ($\sim$500) of galaxy clusters and $\sim$8000 galaxy groups. We have reanalysed the effects of the $f(R)$ fifth force on the scaling relations between the cluster mass and four observable proxies: the mass-weighted gas temperature, the Compton $Y$-parameter of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, the X-ray analogue of the $Y$-parameter, and the X-ray luminosity. We show that a set of mappings between the $f(R)$ scaling relations and their $\Lambda$CDM counterpart, which have been tested in a previous work using a much smaller cosmological volume, are accurate to within a few percent for the $Y$-parameters and $\lesssim7\%$ for the gas temperature for cluster-sized haloes ($10^{14}M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{500}\lesssim10^{15}M_{\odot}$). We computed the luminosity of simulated galaxies of the C-EAGLE project, a suite of 30 high-resolution zoom-in simulations of galaxy clusters based on the EAGLE simulation. The AB magnitudes are derived for different spectral bands, from ultraviolet to infrared, using the simple stellar population modeling based on the E-MILES stellar spectra library. We take into account obscuration due to dust in star forming regions and diffuse interstellar medium. The $g-r$ colour-stellar mass diagram, at z=0.1, presents a defined red sequence, reaching $g-r \simeq 0.8$, 0.05 dex redder than EAGLE at high masses, and a well populated blue cloud, when field galaxies are included. The clusters' inner regions are dominated by red-sequence galaxies at all masses, although a non-negligible amount of blue galaxies are still present. We adopt Bayesian inference to compute the clusters LFs, testing for statistical significance of both single and double Schechter functions. The multicolour LFs at z=0 show a knee luminosity that peaks in the infrared and increases with the cluster's mass. The faint-end is weakly dependent on colour and mass and shows an upturn in the optical, bounded between -1.25 and -1.39, just moderately steeper than the field. The simulations reproduce, within the observational errors, the spectroscopic LFs of the Hercules and Abell 85 clusters, including their faint end upturn. C-EAGLE LFs are in broad agreement with observed LFs taken from SDSS and XXL surveys, up to z=0.67, showing a rather flat faint end when the observational constrains are taken into account., 18 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables. Strongly lensed quasars can provide measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_{0}$) independent of any other methods. One of the key ingredients is exquisite high-resolution imaging data, such as Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and adaptive-optics (AO) imaging from ground-based telescopes, which provide strong constraints on the mass distribution of the lensing galaxy. In this work, we expand on the previous analysis of three time-delay lenses with AO imaging (RXJ1131-1231, HE0435-1223, and PG1115+080), and perform a joint analysis of J0924+0219 by using AO imaging from the Keck Telescope, obtained as part of the SHARP (Strong lensing at High Angular Resolution Program) AO effort, with HST imaging to constrain the mass distribution of the lensing galaxy. Under the assumption of a flat $\Lambda$CDM model with fixed $\Omega_{\rm m}=0.3$, we show that by marginalizing over two different kinds of mass models (power-law and composite models) and their transformed mass profiles via a mass-sheet transformation, we obtain $\Delta t_{\rm BA}h\hat{\sigma}_{v}^{-2}=6.89\substack{+0.8\\-0.7}$ days, $\Delta t_{\rm CA}h\hat{\sigma}_{v}^{-2}=10.7\substack{+1.6\\-1.2}$ days, and $\Delta t_{\rm DA}h\hat{\sigma}_{v}^{-2}=7.70\substack{+1.0\\-0.9}$ days, where $h=H_{0}/100~\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}$ is the dimensionless Hubble constant and $\hat{\sigma}_{v}=\sigma^{\rm ob}_{v}/(280~\rm km\,s^{-1})$ is the scaled dimensionless velocity dispersion. Future measurements of time delays with 10% uncertainty and velocity dispersion with 5% uncertainty would yield a $H_0$ constraint of $\sim15$% precision., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The ability to collect unprecedented amounts of astronomical data has enabled the studying scientific questions that were impractical to study in the pre-information era. This study uses large datasets collected by four different robotic telescopes to profile the large-scale distribution of the spin directions of spiral galaxies. These datasets cover the Northern and Southern hemispheres, in addition to data acquired from space by the Hubble Space Telescope. The data were annotated automatically by a fully symmetric algorithm, as well as manually through a long labor-intensive process, leading to a dataset of nearly $10^6$ galaxies. The data shows possible patterns of asymmetric distribution of the spin directions, and the patterns agree between the different telescopes. The profiles also agree when using automatic or manual annotation of the galaxies, showing very similar large-scale patterns. Combining all data from all telescopes allows the most comprehensive analysis of its kind to date in terms of both the number of galaxies and the footprint size. The results show a statistically significant profile that is consistent across all telescopes. The instruments used in this study are DECam, HST, SDSS, and Pan-STARRS. The paper also discusses possible sources of bias, and analyzes the design of previous work that showed different results. We use the X-ray luminosity relation of radio-loud quasars (RLQs) to measure these luminosity distances as well as estimate cosmological parameters. We adopt four parametric models of X-ray luminosity to test luminosity correlation for RLQs and radio-intermediate quasars (RIQs) and give these cosmological distances. By Bayesian information criterion (BIC), the data suggest that the luminosity relation ${L_X} \propto L_{\rm UV}^{{\gamma _{\rm uv}}}L_{\rm Radio}^{\gamma _{\rm radio}^{\prime }}$ for RLQs has a better goodness of fit, relative to other models, which can be interpreted as this relation being preferred for RLQs. Meanwhile, we compare the results from flat-spectrum radio-loud quasars (FSRLQs) and steep-spectrum radio-loud quasars (SSRLQs), which indicate that their luminosity correlations are not exactly the same. We also consider dividing the RLQ sample into various redshift bins, which can be used to check if the X-ray luminosity relation depends on the redshift. Finally, we apply a combination of RLQs and SN Ia Pantheon to verify the nature of dark energy concerning whether or not its density deviates from the constant, and give the statistical results.
