This thesis presents a study on how four Swedish university libraries use exhibitions as a tool for science communication. I describe the methodology of the exhibitions, how they differ between libraries, and how working with the exhibitions is experienced by the librarians and researchers involved. A smaller part of the study describes how the exhibitions have been made visible online and in social media. All the exhibitions have used a modified version of the five-step model created by Forskarnas Galleri at Malmö University. The exhibitions use a mix of media and tools to present the research. The exhibition experience has happened both synchronously and diachronously, i.e., the visitor has taken part of the knowledge both by visiting the exhibition and by taking part of the literature presented afterwards. Except for during the vernissage, the visitors have experienced the knowledge transfer through indirect mediation, as neither librarians nor researches have been present as permanent guides at the exhibition site during its tenure. Both librarians and researchers agree in their view that the universities see the exhibitions as something positive and worthwhile, and both groups see them as something positive for them personally. The librarians were more unanimously positive to using a more image-based language, while the researchers varied in their responses. Some were more apprehensive and worried that their research message would be altered if it was simplified. Both librarians and researchers expressed that they would have liked to do more with the exhibitions, for instance using them as backdrop for lectures or doing tours. There was a consensus between both groups that it was very hard to assess how many people had visited the exhibition, and what the visitor's view of the exhibitions were. The exhibitions were all visible online and in social media to some extent, but the results varied greatly with some exhibitions being very visible while others barely showed up. Overall, the bibliographic footprint of the exhibition was small, with no traces in an altmetric analysis and only half of the exhibitions being published as 'artistic output' in an open archive. Business school students and faculty increasingly expect the most current and accurate information to be available from their desktop (or wireless laptop). Often the demand is for information on the latest developments from the financial press, such as the collapse of another technology company, or for extensive statistics on international financial markets. The challenge for libraries and librarians is to keep up with this demand while keeping costs under control, maintaining a coherent organization of the increasingly virtual collection, and preserving access to important resources that are not yet web-based. The paper discusses the ongoing evolution of information resources for business from the perspective of academic libraries in the United States supporting graduate business programs. In all areas of business information, electronic resources are increasingly supplanting traditional print resources. Converting existing print resources to electronic form is reviewed, including cost and licensing issues. The proliferation of free information on the internet is discussed, as well as how to organize and manage this information by creating web guides for specific topics in business and economics. Electronic journals are also becoming dominant: at Rutgers University approximately 80% percent of business-related titles are available online. The use of databases to manage complex journal holdings is also discussed, including the Bel Jour database of business and economics journals (www.scc.rutgers.edu/beljour) developed by the author.

European Universities Initiative (EUI) was established in 2017. Its ambition is to strengthen strategic partnerships across the EU between higher education institutions by building networks of universities across the EU which would enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in several EU countries and contribute to the international competitiveness of European universities (European Education Area, 2022). In 2019, EUI opened its first call for HE institutions’ alliances, next calls were in 2020 and 2021. At the end of 2022, there were already 41 European University Alliances gathering 340 HE institutions (European Education Area, 2022a), and the latest call closes in January 2023. In each of these Alliances, academic libraries are members, too. They are already involved in intra-alliance projects, and most probably it will happen more often due to the EU’s project-driven approach, as mentioned earlier. Even though in the past, there were some projects where libraries participated (Górski, 2000), the volume of international projects has grown significantly in the last years, and still for the majority of libraries, this is the first time when they participate in joint, international (so also multicultural) projects that have specific requirements, terminology, and workflows driven by grant agreement requirements and expected outcomes. This practice paper is to the authors’ knowledge the first attempt to describe another challenge that European academic libraries currently face, i.e., project management practice. Familiarity with the theoretical principles of EU project management and in general, project management methodology greatly facilitates the preparation of the proposal and the work of the project. It also allows more effective management of the project as a whole or itsindividual parts (work packages, tasks, milestones, etc.). Just as in the case of, for example, a research data management plan, working on it allows for deeper reflection on what data to collect and for what purpose, so conscious planning of project management methods at the stage of preparing a project application helps in more effective implementation of its subsequent stages. The paper is based on the example of the work experience on the project TRAIN4EU (4EU+, 2022), co-lead by the academic librarians from the University of Warsaw Library (Poland), run by 4EU+ universities in the framework of Horizon 2020 (4EU+, 2022a), as well as on the analysis of the literature on project management that might apply in library-led projects and to strengthen the communities of purpose (Bartlett, 2021). It discusses the usefulness of agile (Denning, 2018; Todaro, 2019), waterfall (Mounir, 2018), and hybrid (Tolbert & Parente, 2020; Wysocki, 2014) methods of project management. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations based on TRAIN4EU practices, lessons learned, as well as better-to-avoid paths.

Big Data analysis provides the opportunity to process data and to generate information that culminates in new knowledge, which can leverage innovation and competitive advantage for the business. In this context, Knowledge Management processes can enhance the flow of information generated from data analysis and transform individual knowledge into organizational knowledge. This paper focused on understanding if the published literature discusses librarians’ performance in the corporate environment regarding Knowledge Management in the context of Big Data. Through a literature review, this paper presents some reflections on how Knowledge Management can be accomplished in the context of Big Data. Furthermore, it checks which competencies are assigned to librarians so that they can act in an organizational context to work with Knowledge Management in a Big Data approach; and finally, it tries to find how librarians can address Knowledge Management in the context of Big Data.

This paper explores the potential for using a voice interface to improve access to reading materials for students who are blind. Students who are blind face many barriers to higher education, including access to reading materials due to graphical library database interfaces that are often not designed to be accessible. This paper reports findings from semi-structured, open-ended interviews with 25 academic librarians with experience serving students who are blind. Themes emerging from the interviews included challenges in developing a voice interface for accessing library materials in terms of the academic library context, user behavior, and voice interface technology. For the academic library context, the challenges included cost, technical expertise, and spatial limitations. For user behavior, the challenges involved developing complex search queries using a voice interface. For voice interface technology, librarians identified the lack of interconnectivity among library databases, the difficulty in presenting search query results via voice, and the potential for bias as challenges. These findings demonstrate broad interest in such a voice interface among academic librarians and provide guideposts for steering the design of such a voice interface.

This paper will describe the background and progress on two collection management projects—the digitization of Swedish print materials and a collaboration on shared print. The author has many years’ experience of working on both projects, and the paper gives a detailed picture of the ambitions, work and results. It concludes with some potential long-term effects of the projects that go beyond the initial scope, like the need for a shift from a local to a national and global perspective and for shared infrastructure.

Η έρευνα αυτή απευθύνονταν στις δημόσιες, δημοτικές, ακαδημαϊκές και στις βιβλιοθήκες τραπεζών της χώρας, αλλά και στα Γενικά Αρχεία του Κράτους. Η ανακοίνωση επικεντρώνεται στα ευρήματα που αφορούν στις βιβλιοθήκες, ενώ γίνεται ιδιαίτερη αναφορά στις ακαδημαϊκές. Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας επιβεβαιώνουν την ευρεία αναγνώριση της αναγκαιότητας ανάληψης συνεργατικών δράσεων σε θέματα διατήρησης των συλλογών των βιβλιοθηκών, ιδιαιτέρως σε μία περίοδο που η εθνική κλιμάκωση των συνεργασιών σε θέματα διατήρησης συλλογών κρίνεται ζωτικής σημασίας. Επιπλέον, από τις προτάσεις που καταγράφηκαν για τη δομή και τις προϋποθέσεις συνεργατικών δράσεων σε θέματα διατήρησης των συλλογών, παρουσιάζεται αυτή που εμφάνισε τη μεγαλύτερη αποδοχή, με σκοπό την προώθηση μίας πολιτικής διατήρησης σε περιφερειακή ή και εθνική κλίμακα, για το σύνολο ή για επιμέρους ομάδες των βιβλιοθηκών και των αρχείων της χώρας. Επίσης, παρουσιάζονται οι επιμέρους προβληματισμοί, που εκφράστηκαν ως προϋποθέσεις ή και όροι σχετικά με την προσέγγιση μετάβασης στο νέο αυτό πλαίσιο συνεργασιών των βιβλιοθηκών της χώρας. Η πρόταση αυτή, με τη δυναμική, τις δυνατότητες και την προοπτική εξέλιξης που έχει, χαρακτηρίζεται από μια ολιστική προσέγγιση ανάπτυξης της διατήρησης τόσο των αναλογικών όσο και των ψηφιακών συλλογών των ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών αλλά και γενικότερα των βιβλιοθηκών της χώρας.

Purpose. Open Science entails research reproducibility, with an emphasis on data sharing and reuse. Hence, research data management (RDM) is an essential asset in research institutions for supporting open science. This study offers a systematic review of the landscape of research data management in academic libraries. It further examines the influence academic libraries can have if they are involved in the research lifecycle process, and how this benefits research institutions that have started implementing research data management, especially in the data-intensive disciplines. Methodology. In this study, the authors analysed Web of Science and Scopus databases, searching for papers connecting research data management and academic libraries. The authors found a total of N=387 articles. After removing duplicates and applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria process, the authors finally analysed N=32 articles, n=20 case studies, and n=12 research papers at both national and international levels. Limitations. This study has some limitations. Although the authors retrieved as many papers as possible for the analysis, it should not be considered as an exhaustive analysis, as varying studies may also be missing from the sample. The authors observed that there are more case studies focused on one institution rather than research papers involving different institutions at the international or national level. Therefore, more research studies would enrich the literature and show best practices in RDM. Results. The results show that research data management has some services implemented in different countries at the local or the international level. The authors argue that research data management generates new opportunities for academic libraries and librarians to acquire new skills as a part of the research data lifecycle. Originality/value. This study reports the current state of research data management at the international level in academic libraries and the influence libraries can have if they are involved in the research lifecycle process.

Purpose With the technological innovation dominating higher education, the university libraries, as physical spaces, continue to play a crucial role in connecting students with knowledge. The emergence of the “Learning Commons” serves as a catalyst in the design of library spaces, renewing libraries’ roles and missions and making them popular to Millennials for new reasons. This study aims to record Greek librarians' views on the current situation in Greek academic libraries regarding physical space design, services provided and the existence of the “Learning Commons” model characteristics. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted through an online survey structured questionnaire (closed-ended, five-point Likert scale, multiple-choice and statements questions). This study population comprised librarians working in 37 academic institutions and colleges. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. The research questions were answered using variables creation and the tests, t-test, ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis. The groups of questions were tested for their reliability using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Findings In total, 186 librarians responded to this study. The responses revealed that participants were willing and ready to accept and support a different approach to academic library physical spaces use, according to the shared learning spaces model. However, this requires changes in the organization's vision, further growth and evolution. Although recently most Greek academic libraries have made significant progress in developing their services to function as information and digital hubs, they do not function as learning collaborative hubs, since the “Learning Commons” model is not reflected in their buildings. Originality/value The creation of new academic libraries according to the “common” model is a rapidly evolving issue that affects Greek libraries. This paper highlights the characteristics of libraries that should be adopted in the modern era, the new roles of academic librarians and the importance of an appropriate design of the physical space to achieve optimal learning outcomes. At the same time, this paper is one of the few that illustrates librarians', and not users', perceptions of these changes. This paper is a good research example, and the methodology for measuring this type of context could be used by other future research approaches in other countries.

Since internationally visible scientific productivity is a criterion for the state evaluation of Croatian academic and scientific institutions and their scientists, Croatian academic libraries have a key role to play in the quantitative evaluation of scientific productivity using modern methods such as bibliometrics, scientometrics and the like. In this paper we present the services used in the quantitative assessment of academic productivity in the academic libraries of the University of Zagreb. Consisting of 31 faculties and 3 art academies, the University of Zagreb is the largest university in Croatia. With its tradition since 1669, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The theoretical framework of the paper is based on four areas defined by Christine L. Borgman – the characteristics of the scientific community, the development of that community, the evaluation of scientific ideas and the dissemination of scientific ideas. The research will use a qualitative methodology that will examine the current situation at the University of Zagreb, the possibility of further developing this type of library service and the necessary knowledge that librarians in academic libraries should have. The research will analyse important national documents that define the assessment system at the University of Zagreb and the current state of such services in the libraries (such as the Ordinance on Scientific Promotion and Advancement Requirements Scientific Titles, draft Standards for Higher Education Libraries in The Republic of Croatia, the Quality Assurance Strategy of the University of Zagreb). The research will use the method of content analysis of these acts and library study programmes, the survey method, and the interview method. The survey method and the interview method will be used to determine the number of libraries at the University of Zagreb that offer services for quantitative evaluation of scientific productivity. It also aims to determine how the libraries are organised in terms of scientific productivity evaluation and what competences the librarians need for this type of service. The sample consists of 39 academic libraries operating at 31 faculties and 3 academies of the University of Zagreb. The aim of the study is to identify and illustrate the current situation in Croatia and provide recommendations for further development of scientific production evaluation, which could serve as a framework for the systematic introduction of this type of service in all libraries of the University of Zagreb, and wider. In addition, the identification of the required competences of librarians can provide guidelines for further improvement of lifelong education of librarians as well as recommendations for library study programmes in Croatia. The recommendations may also be potentially applicable to the international community of academic librarians.

The Peer Research Consultants (PRC) program at the University of Miami Libraries (UML), was formed in 2016 as part of the Learning Commons initiative to collocate and centralize academic services at Richter Library. Although the program had a virtual component in the form of chat and phone services when founded, it was primarily a physical setup where library student workers assisted researchers using a peer-to-peer system. In this paper, we highlight the historical trajectory of the peer research consultant (PRC) program in academic libraries using Richter Library as a case study. We argue that the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 provided an opportunity to redefine the program when it shifted entirely to a virtual modality. The shift to online services gave PRC’s the opportunity to collaborate in-depth with library faculty and staff to support new outreach programs and community initiatives. In this paper, we highlight several examples whereby PRC’s collaborative efforts resulted in research guides that offered links to families during lockdown, provided resources on racial justice initiatives, and combatted misinformation. In so doing, we conclude that the PRC program has strengthened the Libraries’ visibility and ties to the university community, incorporated emerging trends in diversity, equity and inclusion, and provided trustworthy information during a time of crisis. We then offer future directions where library programs such as the PRC, can be leveraged for campus and community engagement.

PurposeThis paper reports the development in Sweden during the last few years on shared print cooperation. In June 2022, 30 libraries signed a letter of intent on cooperation on preservation and withdrawal of print material. By taking joint responsibility for long-term preservation, libraries aim to secure access as well as diversity and breadth in the collections. Design/methodology/approachAs a first practical step, the working group is conducting a national collection analysis using metadata in the national catalog LIBRIS.FindingsThe paper presents the preliminary results of the collection analysis and discusses the next steps for the collaboration. Originality/valueThe Swedish collaboration is one of many European and international collaborations on print archiving, and as such being of interest to a global library field.

This paper primarily focuses on encouraging human flourishing in North Carolina’s Christian theological libraries by observing how collections policies approach materials and theological education as a holistic experience. This holistic experience can be achieved by practitioners by emphasizing human dignity and justice when introducing popular and diverse materials to theological collections. It will be of particular importance to individuals interested in seeing how the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) changes to language around diversity in collections policies are interested as well as theological librarians looking to incorporate goals of human flourishing when assessing and developing their collections. Findings include a focus on students within the curriculum, intellectual diversity as the primary means of including demographic diversity in the collection and a lack of popular materials in most policies. In light of these findings, this paper offers suggestions for beginning to view students in collections policies as holistic beings.

This study examines social media use by academic libraries and consists of two parts. The first part surveys websites, and from the survey provides a picture of the current state of social media usage among university libraries in Australia. It also identifies Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube as the most widely used social media platforms, and the University of Melbourne Library (UML) as the library which has attracted the most social media followers. In the second part of the paper, a content analysis is carried out on the UML’s social media accounts. Findings demonstrate that the UML library uses Facebook more for sharing information and knowledge and showcasing facilities, places, and services; while the main purposes of Twitter are mainly for communicating and interacting, making news and announcements, and promoting library collections. ‘Communication and interaction’ is shown as the category of information most often posted on Twitter, the UML’s main social media platform. With the rapid prevailing of electronic information resources and services, the traditional academic libraries are being declined and gradually deserted. Recent studies highlighted this issue as one of the challenges of the digital era. Responding to this issue, this paper introduces the idea of revitalizing academic libraries through the concept of "Third place" based on the possibility of providing traditional libraries with new interior spaces wherein students, scholars, and faculty can learn and socialize as well as cooperate, without stress. Based on the literature reviewed, there are several factors through which it is possible to enhance the interior spaces to attract more users to traditional academic libraries and make them more vital. This paper discusses the possibility of revitalizing traditional libraries by activating the role of the "Third Place" identity in their interior design. To activate the concept of "Third Place" in local academic libraries that lack such active spaces, this work focuses, in particular, on the academic library of the University of Technology as a major case study, three student proposals are included in this paper. Large scale data and predictive analytics are the most challenging tasks in the field of academic data mining. Academic libraries are a great source of information and knowledge to provide a wide range of services to meet end-user requirements. Due to the rapid changes in the educational environment and availability of huge library rental book data, it is required to utilize data mining and machine learning techniques in the context of the academic library to extract and analyze underlying knowledge from rental book data, which is important to facilitate library administration to drive better future decisions to improve and manage library resources effectively. These are the following resources, such as managing future demands of the library books, selection and arrangement of the books, operational efficiency, and also improve the quality of interaction between the library and end-users, etc. This work uses and analyzes a real dataset collected from the library of Jeju National University, the Republic of Korea. The dataset contains 2,211,413 rental book records including 173671 unique book records, 57203 unique number of the rental user, and 78 data parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel model to analyze and predict library rental book data to facilitates library administration in order to plan and manage library resources effectively and provide better services to end-users. The proposed model consists of two different modules; library data analysis and prediction modules. Firstly, we use data mining techniques to analyze and extract useful underlying patterns from library rental book data, which can lead to plan and manage library resources effectively. Secondly, a novel prediction model is proposed based on Deep Neural Network (DNN), Support Vector Regressor (SVR), and Random Forest (RF) to predict future usage of the academic libraries rental books. The performance results of the implemented regression models are evaluated in terms of MAE, MSE, and RMSE. In this paper, it is found that the DNN model performs significantly better than SVR and RF. The experimentation results show that the proposed model improves the future usage of library books to facilitate library administration to plan and manage library resources effectively. Based on the proposed model results, the academic library administration can easily plan and manage resources effectively to provide quality services to end-users.

Objective.This paper aims to investigate the types and scope of community engagement and outreach activities of academic libraries while the physical library spaces remain closed or operating on a limited capacity. It also looks at the tools and methods employed to implement such activities. The paper also attempts to uncover patterns or emerging themes as libraries explore innovative ideas and take new initiatives for the betterment of the community they serve.Methods.The study employs a website and Facebook page survey of AUN (ASEAN University Network) Inter-Library Online (AUNILO) member-libraries. The following six outreach categories will be utilized: (1) Collection-Based Outreach; (2) Instruction & Services-Based Outreach; (3) “Whole Person” Outreach; (4) Just for Fun Outreach; (5) Partnerships and Community-Focused Outreach; and (6) Multi-Pronged Themed Events and Programming. Said categories were derived from Farrell and Mastel (2016) paper entitled “Considering Outreach Assessment: Strategies, Sample Scenarios, And A Call to Action.”Results.Findings of the study will offer some insights on how libraries strengthen their roles in transforming societies as they provide opportunities to bring about positive change in their communities. Moreover, this paper will also challenge libraries to take a closer look at their own activities and consider how they can design creative and inspiring ways to connect with their communities.Conclusions.In response to the COVID-19 crisis, libraries are proactively pivoting their community engagement and outreach efforts online and are finding new ways to serve faculty, students, and partners. Libraries are committed to strengthening the resilience and recovery of the community through working collaboratively with its members and building partnerships with relevant organizations.

Rad analizira vidljivost visokoškolskih knjižnica kroz aspekt suradnje visokoškolskih knjižničara sa studentima i znanstveno-nastavnim osobljem. Približavanje knjižničnih službi i usluga zajednici u kojoj djeluju uvelike ovisi o angažiranosti i zauzimanju visokoškolskih knjižničara koji pridonose uspostavljanju slike suvremene knjižnice kao mjesta znanja, kvalitetnih usluga i aktivnosti. Teorijski dio rada daje pregled tema bitnih za ostvarenje što veće vidljivosti visokoškolske knjižnice. Kao preduvjet tome, u početku rada je ponuđena definicija visokoškolske knjižnice i drugih srodnih knjižnica. Uz to, misija, poslanje i zadaće visokoškolske knjižnice, kao knjižnice u sastavu, moraju odražavati i podupirati rad matične ustanove čime dodatno podižu vidljivost u zajednici. Važan doprinos ovoga istraživanja ukazuje i na potencijal suradnje knjižničara i znanstveno-nastavnog osoblja. S obzirom da su ispitani knjižničari naglasili potrebu za kvalitetnijom međusobnom komunikacijom u dijelu međusobne stručne suradnje, otvara se i mogućnost daljnje analize koja bi tu suradnju iznjedrila na konkretnoj razini, a u svrhu promicanja kvalitetnijega studija, studentskoga zadovoljstva i relevantnosti samih knjižničara u znanstvenome i nastavnome kontekstu. Naposljetku se ovim radom zaokružuje važnost i mogućnosti primjene novih tehnologija u radu knjižnice i knjižničara kako bi isti (p)ostali relevantni čimbenici u prijenosu i stvaranju znanja i u suvremenome društvu koje je sve više tehnološki određeno. This paper analyzes the academic libraries visibility through the aspect of cooperation of academic librarians with students and scientific-teaching staff.. Bringing library services and services closer to the community in which they operate largely depends on the engagement and commitment of higher education librarians who contribute to establishing the image of a modern library as a place of knowledge, quality services and activities. The theoretical part of the paper provides an overview of topics important for achieving greater visibility of the academic library. As a prerequisite for this, a definition of a academic library and other related libraries is offered at the beginning of the paper. In addition, the mission and tasks of the academic library, as a constituent library, must reflect and support the work of the home institution, thus further raising visibility in the community. An important contribution of this research also indicates the potential for cooperation between librarians and scientific-teaching staff. Since the surveyed librarians emphasized the need for better mutual communication in the area of mutual professional cooperation, the possibility of further analysis that would generate this cooperation at a specific level, in order to promote better study, student satisfaction and relevance of librarians in the scientific and teaching context. .

Tema diplomskog rada je podrška suvremenih visokoškolskih knjižnica elektroničkom učenju. S obzirom na sve veću važnost informacijsko-komunikacijske tehnologije u visokoškolskom sustavu obrazovanja, rad nastoji istaknuti različite načine kojima visokoškolske knjižnice kao institucije u sastavu fakulteta, visokih škola ili sveučilišta pružaju podršku visokoškolskom obrazovanju putem elektroničkih izvora informacija i elektroničkih knjižničnih usluga. Rad stoga povezuje izvore i usluge visokoškolskih knjižnica s elektroničkim učenjem te opisuje konkretne izvore i usluge pomoću kojih visokoškolske knjižnice sudjeluju u provođenju nastave na daljinu. Diplomski rad uključuje anketno istraživanje korištenja elektroničkih izvora informacija i elektroničkih usluga Knjižnice Filozofskog fakulteta u Zagrebu te ostalih internetskih izvora za potrebe studiranja. Istraživanjem se propituje i analizira korištenje elektroničkih izvora informacija i elektroničkih knjižničnih usluga u svrhu elektroničkog učenja i provođenja nastave na daljinu na Filozofskom fakultetu u Zagrebu. The topic of the thesis is the support of modern academic libraries in e-learning. Given the growing importance of information and communication technology in the higher education system, the paper seeks to highlight the different ways in which academic libraries as institutions within colleges or universities provide support to higher education through electronic resources and online library services. The paper, therefore, connects the electronic resources and online services of academic libraries with e-learning and describes the specific electronic resources and online services through which academic libraries participate in the implementation of distance education. The thesis includes a survey of the use of electronic resources and online services of the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb and other Internet sources for study purposes. The research examines and analyzes the use of electronic resources and online library services for e-learning and distance education at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb.

The purpose of this exploratory case study is to consider from peer tutors’ perspective the relevance of information literacy (IL) in their roles as tutors, students and in their everyday lives. The research used a qualitative methodology, wherein nine participants shared thoughts and reflections in course discussion forums in response to six online modules, each outlining one the the six frames of the ACRL information literacy framework. The data-gathering phase of the study was bookended by focus groups that were also recorded. Analysis of these various discussions reveals that while tutors see the relevance of IL in their everyday lives, their responses in terms of their roles as tutors and students varies depending on the nature of their program. The need to budget research time efficiently in response to a heavy course load prevents some from pursuing information more broadly or deeply than strictly necessary. The paper considers implications of these insights for further inquiry into the library’s role in advancing IL development in a polytechnical environment., L’objectif de cette étude de cas exploratoire est de tenir compte de la perspective qu’ont les tuteurs pairs de la pertinence de la maîtrise de l’information dans leur rôle en tant que tuteur et étudiant ainsi que dans leur quotidien. Cette étude a utilisé une méthodologie qualitative par laquelle neuf participants ont partagé leurs pensées et leurs réflexions dans le cadre d’un forum de discussion lié à un cours en réponse à six modules en ligne, chacun portant sur l’un des six cadres du référentiel de compétences informationnelles de l’ACRL. La phase de collecte de données de l’étude a été complétée par des groupes de discussion qui ont également été enregistrés. L’analyse de ces diverses discussions révèle que même si les tuteurs voient la pertinence de la maîtrise de l’information pour leur vie quotidienne, leurs réponses liées à leur rôle en tant que tuteur et étudiant varient selon la nature de leur programme. Le fait d’allouer efficacement du temps de recherche en réponse à une lourde charge de cours empêche certains de rechercher des informations plus poussées que ce qui est strictement nécessaire. Cet article examine les implications de ces constatations sur d’autres études cherchant à explorer le rôle de la bibliothèque dans la promotion du développement des compétences informationnelles dans un établissement polytechnique.

Introduction. Simulation-based training courses are commonly used in medical and teacher education in order to practice handling difficult tasks and situations in a safe environment. This paper researches a training course held by the university library of Linköping. Using simulations with avatars the librarians acted out challenging and troublesome scenarios with library users. The library users were played by computer simulated avatars, in a virtual environment. The avatars were controlled by a simulation specialist. The aim of the paper is to research if and how this kind of simulation-based training course can strengthen librarians’ ability to handle difficult situations with library users, and if it can be a useful tool in the aim to improve the workplace environment. Method. To find out the thoughts and feelings of the participants of the training course, a questionnaire was distributed to all participants. To get a deeper understanding, five of the participants also took part in an interview. One of the simulation-specialists and the librarian who led the training course, were also interviewed, to find out more about the simulation-based training course. Lastly, both authors of this paper participated in a short simulation exercise as well, to gain a deeper understanding of how it works. Analysis. The research material from the questionnaires and interviews were analyzed using Albert Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, Stevan E. Hobfoll’s resource theory, and John Dewey’s education theory. The three theories together made possible for us to research the simulation-based training course from several different perspectives. This enabled an investigation into the training course’s potential to strengthen the librarians’ ability to handle difficult situations, conserve resources and make them resilient, and what this unique form of training course can teach. Results. The questionnaires and interviews show that difficult or threatening situations with library users rarely occur at the university library where the participants work. The respondents emphasize however, the importance of recurrent training in the treatment of library users. A few respondents express that they feel safer after completing the training course, and that they feel better prepared to face difficult situations with library users. The results also show that the simulation-based training course is a good way to learn as it is based on the real experiences of the librarians, and they get to be physically active, using their bodies in acting during the scenarios. Conclusions. The findings of this research suggest that this kind of simulation-based training course in handling difficult situations with library users, has the potential to strengthen librarians’ resilience and ability to handle difficult situations. It concludes as well that the form of the training course, acting out scenarios with computer simulated avatars, is a good way to learn different strategies to cope with challenging situations. Any overarching conclusions cannot be drawn since this paper only research one training course and it is not within its scope to study the long-term effects. This is a two-year master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Libraries and publishers have a mutual obligation to ensure long-term preservation of the scholarly record - leveraging library expertise in preservation, publisher expertise in content production, and the author relationships and financial means of both parties. Agreements between the parties are good places to document these mutual obligations. These might be subscription agreements, open access publishing agreements, or agreements that blend the two. A review in 2022 revealed that digital preservation language in many existing agreements was vague, unclear regarding the precise content and time depth preserved, unnecessarily restrictive in terms of access and/or use, conflated post-cancellation access and long-term digital preservation and access, and was sometimes administratively burdensome to implement. It was also difficult to verify compliance with the agreements, and that the content was actually preserved properly. This paper clarifies the distinction between long-term preservation and post-cancellation access; recommends improved language to use in agreements; and offers guidance on how to negotiate the language into agreements.

Virtual reality (VR) shows great promise for enhancing the learning experience of students in higher education and academic libraries are at the forefront of efforts to bring VR into the curriculum as an innovative learning tool. This paper reviews some of the growing applications and benefits of VR technologies for supporting pedagogy in academic libraries and outlines the challenges of making VR accessible for disabled students. It defines existing regulations and guidelines for designing accessible digital technologies and offers two case studies drawn from each of the authors’ own academic libraries, at Temple University and at the University of Oklahoma, in order to provide insight into the challenges and benefits of making VR more accessible for students. The paper argues that to continue to serve their mission of equitable access to information for the entire student population, academic libraries that implement VR programs need to balance innovation with inclusion by allocating sufficient staff time and technical resources and bringing accessibility thinking into VR projects from the beginning. To accomplish this, libraries will need the assistance of software developers and accessibility experts, and librarians will need to act as strong advocates for better support from commercial software and hardware vendors and to promote change in their institutions.

Evidence-based practice is an approach to professional practice that involves a structured process of collecting, interpreting and applying valid and reliable research and evidence to support decision-making and continuous service improvement in professional practice. This paper reports on emerging initiatives in evidence-based practice at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Library, a regional multi-campus university in Australia. It demonstrates how evidence-based practice forms part of our organisational strategy to engage with our community and society. The case study describes a new model of embedding evidence-based practice through a role explicitly dedicated to developing the library’s evidence base. While other libraries may have a person responsible for assessment, performance metrics or data analysis, the Coordinator (Evidence-Based Practice) has a broader mandate – to work with library staff to develop tools, skills and expertise in evidence-based practice. The paper will describe why this role was created and how the Coordinator is working to engage with library staff to understand their business and the evidence needed to support service improvement for the Library. By doing this, USQ Library is building the capacity to demonstrate value to stakeholders, gain a deeper understanding of clients’ needs and experiences, promote robust decision-making and improve service delivery. The paper also outlines an initiative led by the Coordinator (Evidence-Based Practice) to develop a conceptual model of evidence-based practice within academic libraries at the organisational, rather than individual level. Current models of evidence-based library and information practice apply predominantly to individuals. Informed by relevant literature and 16 semi-structured interviews with library professionals from Australian and New Zealand university libraries, three themes emerged to describe how evidence-based practice might be experienced at the organisational level. The lived experience at USQ Library and our research investigations suggest that being evidence-based provides benefits to an academic library’s culture, practice and impact.

Svrha je ovoga rada istražiti prisutnost visokoškolskih knjižnica Sveučilišta Josipa Jurja Strossmayera u Osijeku na društvenoj mreži Facebook i analizirati njihovu aktivnost. Predstavljena je kvantitativna i kvalitativna analiza Facebook-stranica sedam visokoškolskih knjižnica kako bi se utvrdilo koji su sadržaji na stranicama najpopularniji i koliko Facebook može pomoći knjižnicama u promoviranju aktivnosti i uspostavljanju bolje komunikacije s korisnicima. Pristup/Metodologija. Pregledavanjem mrežnih stranica svih sastavnica Sveučilišta koje imaju odjel knjižnice, ustanovljeno je da 7 od 15 knjižnica imaju svoje Facebook stranice. Utvrđivanjem broja oznaka Sviđa mi se i broja pratitelja, utvrđena je i uspoređena popularnost stranica, a u sljedećem koraku promatrana je aktivnost knjižničara na Facebook stranicama prebrojavanjem objavljenih fotografija, video zapisa, događaja i bilješki. Podatci o objavama i reakcijama pratitelja detaljno su kvantitativno i kvalitativno analizirani za razdoblje od 1. 1. do 30. 4. 2020. Na kraju su istaknute i najpopularnije objave po pojedinim knjižnicama. Rezultati. Analiza je pokazala da manje od polovine knjižnica Sveučilišta Josipa Jurja Strossmayera u Osijeku ima svoju Facebook stranicu. Najviše oznaka Sviđa mi se i najveći broj pratitelja ima Facebook stranica Knjižnice Filozofskog fakulteta. Pretpostavku da na broj sviđanja i praćenja stranice utječu i ukupan broj studenata određenog fakulteta, datum kreiranja stranice te pripadaju li fakulteti društveno- humanističkim znanostima ili području znanosti, tehnologije, inženjerstva i matematike (STEM), nismo uspjeli dokazati. Popularnost Facebook stranica ipak najviše ovisi o vrsti i sadržaju objava, broju fotografija, video zapisa i događaja. Najbolji pokazatelj popularnosti je broj reakcija na objave, broj komentara i dijeljenja. Prema tim pokazateljima, potvrđeno je da je Facebook stranica Knjižnice Filozofskog fakulteta najpopularnija knjižnična Facebook stranica na Sveučilištu. Originalnost/Vrijednost. Rad donosi dosad neobjavljene podatke o prisutnosti visokoškolskih knjižnica osječkog sveučilišta na društvenoj mreži Facebook, kvantitativne i kvalitativne podatke o njihovoj aktivnosti i prihvaćenosti objava od strane korisnika. Detaljna sadržajna analiza objava može poslužiti kao putokaz knjižnicama prilikom strateškog planiranja i identificiranja potreba svojih korisnika, u prvom redu studenata., Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the presence of academic libraries at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek on the social network Facebook, and to analyze their activity. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the seven academic libraries’ posts that have their own Facebook pages was carried out to determine which content on the sites is most popular and how much Facebook can help libraries to promote their activities and establish better communication with users. Approach/methodology/design. By browsing the websites of all University components that have libraries, it was found that 7 out of 15 libraries have their own Facebook pages. By determining the number of „likes“ and the number of followers, the popularity of each library Facebook page was estimated. In the next step, the activity of librarians on the Facebook pages was observed by counting published photos, videos, events, and notes. The data on the posts published by the libraries and the reactions of the followers were analyzed in detail quantitatively and qualitatively for the period from January 1st to April 30th 2020. Finally, the most popular posts on library Facebook pages were highlighted. Results. The analysis showed that less than half of the libraries of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek do not have their own Facebook page. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has the largest numbers of „likes“ and followers on their page. We have not been able to prove the assumption that the numbers of „likes“ and followers of the pages are influenced by the size of the total number of students of a certain faculty, the date of creation of the site, and whether the faculties belong to the social sciences or STEM. The popularity of the Facebook pages, however, depends mostly on the type and content of the posts, the number of photos, videos, and events. The best indicator of popularity is the number of reactions to the posts, the number of comments and shares. According to these indicators, we found that the Facebook page of the library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the most popular library Facebook page at the University. Originality/value. The paper brings previously unpublished data on the presence of academic libraries of the University of Osijek on the social network Facebook, the quantitative and qualitative data on their activity, and the overall user acceptance of the posts written by the libraries. The detailed content analysis of the libraries’ posts on their Facebook pages can serve as a guide for libraries in strategic planning and identifying the needs of their users, primarily students.

The users’ evaluation of the discovery service as a tool for finding and retrieval of information is also given.Conclusions.Discovery services have special functions and are powerful tools for identifying the required information, which is placed in directories and databases, online libraries, and external full-text databases. The study found that finding relevant information was of paramount importance to users who highly appreciated the usefulness of this service for their research.

Наведено огляд літератури на предмет ціннісного підходу до функціонування бібліотеки. У роботі використано дані дослідження досвіду користувачів, статистичні звіти та ін. Результати. Описано можливості налаштування необхідних функцій пошуку для користувачів та управління ресурсами, а також проблеми підтримки інструментів discovery. Також наведено оцінку користувачів discovery-сервісу як інструменту пошуку інформації. Висновки. Пошукові сервіси мають спеціальні функції і є потужними інструментами виявлення необхідної інформації, яка розміщена в каталогах і власних БД, електронних бібліотеках, а також у зовнішніх повнотекстових базах даних. Дослідження показало, що пошук відповідної інформації має першорядне значення для користувачів, які високо оцінили корисність цього сервісу для досліджень.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a narrow definition of brand, explain why it is important, and present practical exercises to discover a library’s brand. Based on the author’s experience in corporate and library settings, a brand is defined as an idea that can be discovered by two formal processes outlined in the paper. Libraries can use branding to create more focused marketing programs—going beyond logos or claims about services—that, in turn, will have a greater impact on potential users. The processes described in this article provide an alternative to costly and time-consuming consultants or agencies. Furthermore, these two templates for brand discovery enable librarians to move beyond marketing libraries generically to marketing a specific library. This article discusses organizational culture and related obstacles to brand discovery and implementation.

University libraries provide an important service to society, contributing to spread knowledge and cultivating new talents in the academic environment. The main objective of this article is to perform a review of the literature on efficiency assessments in the context of university libraries. The databases Web of Science and Scopus were adopted as reference to search for papers in the aforementioned context and identify the methodologies used and perspectives set out by different authors. A complementary search was also made on Google Scholar to obtain additional articles. In sum, 34 papers were found to compose the core of analyzed publications. As result, we observed that nearly 90% of the papers use Data Envelopment Analysis to assess the efficiency of university libraries and other methodologies with the same proposal were identified. Moreover, the variables used in these publications were analyzed, contributing to the mapping of main inputs and outputs that directly affect the services of university libraries. Furthermore, other characteristics were also considered, such as: temporal placement of publications and countries with the largest production of papers. Finally, based on the results of this study, further researches are suggested. Resumo As bibliotecas universitárias prestam um importante serviço à sociedade, contribuindo para difundir o conhecimento e cultivar novos talentos dentro do ambiente acadêmico. Neste estudo, a revisão da literatura sobre avaliação de eficiência no contexto das bibliotecas universitárias é o principal objetivo. Foram adotadas como referência as bases de dados Web of Science e Scopus para a busca de trabalhos no contexto acima mencionado e para a identificação das metodologias utilizadas e perspectivas estabelecidas pelos diferentes autores. Realizou-se uma pesquisa complementar na base Google Scholar para a obtenção de outros artigos. Em suma, foram selecionados 34 trabalhos para compor o núcleo de publicações analisadas. Como resultado, observou-se que cerca de 90% dos artigos utilizam a Análise de Envoltória de Dados para avaliar a eficiência das bibliotecas universitárias, tendo sido identificadas outras metodologias com a mesma proposta. Além disso, analisaram-se as variáveis utilizadas nessas publicações, contribuindo para o mapeamento dos principais inputs e outputs que afetam diretamente os serviços prestados pelas bibliotecas universitárias. Ademais, foram consideradas outras características, tais como o arranjo temporal das publicações e os países com a maior produção de artigos. Por fim, foram sugeridas pesquisas adicionais com base nos resultados deste estudo.

Based on experimental results and existing resources, the paper explored and identified the major contributing factors to the email notice issue, including local administrator status, Aleph client, mail server, Aleph system files, and security settings. The paper elaborated the troubleshooting process, and how to find the solution to the issue. The authors suggested recommendations based the lessons learned from the project experience. The project experience presented in this paper should be instructive for libraries solving the similar problems.

Library promotion through social media is an integral part of library services, especially for academic libraries. Social media can inform the end-users of what library’s resources and services and give librarians an impression of users’ views and needs. This study aimed to determine the use of social media to promote academic libraries in Indonesia. This research used a qualitative approach, specifically a systematic literature review, and includes details about identifying the research questions, the literature search process, data synthesis and search results. Based on the scientific papers identified and reviewed, the majority of research was published in 2019. The most frequent social media platforms for library promotions were Facebook and Instagram. Academic libraries located in Yogyakarta carried out the most social media promotions. Obstacles to promoting libraries through social media in Indonesia were primarily due to internal factors of libraries.

As a result of the growing impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on many parts of life, including education, library and information science (LIS) education has been forced to incorporate e-learning into its curriculum. Due to advancements in ICTs, the curriculum of LIS schools around the world has certainly changed drastically in the recent few years. Blended learning is becoming more popular as a result of advancements in and widespread use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education, as well as the present generation of technology-savvy students in higher education institutions. It has been found to be useful in boosting educational facilities' teaching and learning processes. The article looked at how to use technology to improve teaching and learning in LIS education and training, as well as questioning the purpose of current teaching and learning approaches. The solutions needed to make blended learning methodologies more accessible, particularly in LIS education, are also explored. In addition, the paper looked at practical approaches to ensuring a beneficial blended learning experience for students, as well as the roles academic librarians play in the ever-evolving sophisticated learning environment, pointing out that insufficient funds, unskilled manpower, and librarian resistance to change are some of the challenges that can stymie effective blended learning implementation. Finally, academic librarians should be intentional in their skill acquisition so that they can play significant and vital roles in the complex learning environment that is constantly growing.

Introduction. The paper presents a qualitative study of how students in higher education experience the use of digital learning objects as part of information literacy training. Method. The study is inspired by the phenomenographical method and take a second-order perspective asking how students experience information literacy training and digital learning tools. The study builds on seven focus-group interviews with a total of 29 students from law, engineering, and nursing.Analysis. The first part of the analysis presents results on students’ experience of the digital learning tools across the cases with focus on student motivation. The second part of the analysis focuses on the roles of the different actors in information literacy building. The analysis illustrates how the use of digital learning tools and face-to-face information literacy training is deeply related to the roles of the different actors taking part in the information literacy practice. The academic librarian is almost invisible to the students in two of the three cases, but student interaction with the digital learning tools promote visibility.Conclusions. The findings confirm related research on the importance of integrating information literacy training into curriculum and nuances our understanding of how students experience information literacy training and digital learning tools.

Predatory publishing is an emerging but worrisome trend among academics including librarians in Nigeria. This paper examines crucial issues and implications of predatory publishing among Nigerian academic librarians. It outlines the characteristics of predatory publishers and journals and their subtle means of enticing unsuspecting authors. The paper discusses the intricate dimensions of predatory publishing and its effects on research and scholarship among librarians. It notes that predatory publishing has devastating effects on the future of research and scholarship. The paper concludes with strategies for intervention and a call on relevant authorities in Nigeria to take proactive steps to curb predatory publishing among faculties especially academic librarians. / Nijerya’da kütüphaneciler de dâhil olmak üzere akademisyenler arasında yükselen ve aynı zamanda endişe veren bir akım sahte yayıncılıktır. Bu makale Nijeryalı akademisyen kütüphanecilerinin sahte yayıncılıkla ilgili önemli sorunlarını ve bu yayıncılığın etkilerini incelemektedir. Çalışma, sahte yayıncıların ve dergilerinin özelliklerini ana hatları ile tespit ederek kuşku duymayan yazarları baştan çıkarmak için kullandıkları hilekar yolları ortaya koymaktadır. Bu araştırıma ile sahte yayıncılığın çapraşık boyutları ve bunların araştırmalar ve akademisyenlik üstündeki etkisi de incelenmektedir. Araştırmada sahte yayıncılığın araştırma ve akademisyenliğin geleceği ile ilgili yıkıcı etkileri olacağına dikkat çekilmektedir. Bu tür yayıncılık faaliyetlerine müdahale etmek için stratejiler önerilmekte ve aynı zamanda fakültelerde özellikle akademisyen kütüphaneciler arasında sahte yayıncılığın engellenmesi hususunda gerekli önlemleri almaları için Nijerya’daki ilgili makamlara bir çağrı da bulunarak araştırma son bulmaktadır.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find out whether the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) in Osijek, Croatia, interact online with any sort of e-democracy or e-government information. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the findings of a pilot-study conducted among the undergraduate and graduate students of the FHSS in Osijek. The research was conducted in May 2015 on a sample of 246 students. The research was carried out by means of an online and paper survey and reached 59.91 per cent of the population of students enrolled in the first year of undergraduate and graduate studies. Findings Students in our sample spend a lot of time online. They are relatively active online when it comes to finding information connected with their academic responsibilities (e.g. 77.2 per cent of the students of the sample have gone online for finding information about exams, scholarships, etc.), but rarely engage in democratic processes within the academic community (only 11.8 per cent have contacted their student representative on the University Student Board). They are even less interested in democratic processes within the local community (8.1 per cent have contacted their local authority representatives regarding an administrative or communal matter). Originality/value This is the first research of FHSS students’ perceptions and views regarding their engagement and their information behavior regarding e-democracy and e-government processes and one of the very few such researches in Croatia.

İstanbul Technical University, Mustafa İnan Library--(2017), Purpose: Smartphones will very soon become the standard means by which the Internet is accessed, and the rates of connection from mobile devices will supercede those which are computer-based.The hypothesis of this study is that a university library accessible by mobile technology will be the model of the future, and its purpose is to search for any evidence for which the university libraries in Turkey are prepared to meet this challenge. Design/methodology/approach-In the study, both domestic and foreign literature surveys were undertaken to determine which mobile library services are offered in university libraries. 30 random central libraries of both private and state universities were selected from across the 7 regions of Turkey. To gather data, a 26-question electronic survey was generated and e-mailed to the library managers. The questions were based on findings regarding the mobile library services provided by university libraries around the world. Findings-By examining the survey results, it was determined that Turkish university libraries utilise a comparable level of mobile technology, and demonstrate a similar level of care with regard to the services they offer. There are mobile sites (separate sites or mobile sites as applications), mobile library catalogues, SMS services, chatrooms, consultations via IM tools, mobile device lending services, and augmented reality and QR code applications. Research limitations/implications. In Turkey, the structures of university libraries operate under variable conditions due to the lack of established standards. This causes negative results for the delivery of library services. For this reason, university library standards should be set practicable as soon as reasonable, considering the social/economic and cultural structure of the country. Practical implications-Due to the transformative effect technology and the Internet have had on services, “information and communication technologies infrastructure” has been added as a sixth element to the five traditional library items; namely building, budget, personnel, collection, and users. Globalisation through the web has resulted in the individualisation of services, and the slogan “content is king” has been changed to the “customer experience is king”. Fundamental library services are being adapted to allow mobile technology access, and this approach best reflects the new slogan. Therefore, the university library of the future may well be the one entirely based on mobile technology. Social implications: mobile devices lead to new forms of engagement with student learning; so academic libraries are expected to be strong partners in the teaching and learning processes of their institution. Originality/value: The hypothesis of this study is that a university library accessible by mobile technology will be the model of the future, and its purpose is to search for any evidence for which the university libraries in Turkey are prepared to meet this challenge. This study is also meaningful because there have not been any study of Turkish university libraries in terms of mobile library services to users. This paper is the first time that a comprehensive study has been made of current mobile technology-based services, and is also the first comparison of the applications in Turkish university libraries. This study was carried out to examine the awareness and use of social media tools by library and information professionals (LIPs) in selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria and the challenges they face in the use of social media technologies. Descriptive survey was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised 217 library and information professionals from 10 selected academic libraries in south-west, Nigeria. A total enumeration technique was used to cover all the library and information professionals, 136 respondents filled and returned the questionnaire, given a response rate of 62.7%. The questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The findings show that majority of LIPs possessed a high level of awareness in the use of social media tools. The study also revealed that social network tools were highly used by LIPs in the academic libraries studied and the types of social media used by LIPs was also revealed. The major challenges faced in the use of social media include inadequate power supply, lack of Internet access and time constraints. The paper recommended that to enhance the use of social media by LIPs, there is need for constant awareness of the importance of social media tools to LIPs and libraries in effective service delivery, LIPs should be ready to learn, unlearn and be learned in the use of social media and university libraries should provide enabling environment such as internet connectivity, power supply and policy to guide LIPs in social media usage.

Summer 2020 witnessed a large-scale temporary release of content from the publishing community to support UK universities as they moved to online-only delivery, followed by a scramble by those institutions to maintain access to resources. This paper reflects on the experiences of De Montfort University and Imperial College libraries during this period as they supported the move to remote teaching. It focuses on the complexities experienced during this transitional period, and considers how the speed of these changes increased staff workloads, stretched budgets, and compelled acquisitions teams to act without always fully gathering evidence or strategically planning how new practices might work in the longer term. The authors, who sit on various national contract management and acquisitions strategy groups, examine the repercussions of navigating from an unplanned, accelerated digital shift to a more managed, sustainable paradigm, and contemplate how the advent of multimode teaching may impact on the way libraries are resourced. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a personal viewpoint on the development of document supply in the context of the recent European Union (EU) decisions on open science. Design/methodology/approach The paper provides some elements to the usual questions of service development, about business, customers, added value, environment and objectives. Findings The EU goal for open science is 100 per cent available research results in 2020. To meet the challenge, document supply must change, include more and other content, serve different targets groups, apply innovative technology and provide knowledge. If not, document supply will become a marginalized library service. Originality/value Basically, open science is not library-friendly, and it does not offer a solution for the actual problems of document supply. But it may provide an opportunity for document supply to become a modern service able to deal with new forms of unequal access and digital divide.

Academic libraries are centres that promote research excellence, offering resources for their communities to help consider the world around us. Artists use their form of creative expression to raise questions about life and to interpret the human condition. Art has the power to enrich the academic environment through new and alternate ways of representing scholarship, helping to make research appealing and more accessible to a variety of audiences. The Library can be a catalyst to propel this goal forward, helping students navigate university life, building a bridge with internal and external communities, and informing faculty research in new and meaningful ways. The author has over twenty years of experience as an academic librarian engaged in positioning libraries to be active partners in the enrichment of the campus experience through art. This paper briefly explores the emergence of regional and national collaborations among galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) in Canada and around the world while considering the role of the academic library within these partnerships. The paper shares experiences of intentional art-centred space and service design including: relationship building with the campus art gallery and other appropriate academic departments, embracing the flexibility of library space, rethinking traditional library and archival resources to inspire artists in the academic community, and supporting faculty and students with explorations in the area of arts-informed research and scholarship.

Is there room for war metaphor in academic libraries? Is there a good, or justifiable, reason for its use? In this paper, we argue the answer to these questions is no. The paper will discuss the nature of metaphor in general, the effects of its use, and why those effects matter. Grounded in this discussion, it will consider and analyze the use of war metaphor, specifically in the academic library world. Finally, it will offer suggestions for how, through individual and collective effort, the metaphor of war might be purged from the academic library lexicon.

Prikupljanje, obrada, pohrana, očuvanje i diseminiranje produkata naučnog rada akademskog osoblja od esencijalnog su značaja za izgradnju prestiža jednog univerziteta, a imajući na umu da se naučne publikacije oduvijek koriste i kao sredstvo vrednovanja rada naučnih radnika, u ovom se radu argumentira potreba uključivanja visokoškolskih biblioteka u realizaciju različitih programa univerzitetskog izdavaštva orijentiranih ka promociji, tj. povećanju vidljivosti rezultata znanstvenih istraživanja akademske zajednice na međunarodnom nivou. Iako bibliotekari u visokoškolskim bibliotekama raspolažu iskustvom kolaboracije u različitim programima izdavaštva, poput programa publiciranja e-časopisa, zbornika radova sa konferencija ili tehničkih izvještaja, u radu će se istaknuti potreba usavršavanja i usvajanja novih uloga za potrebe sazrijevanja i profesionalizacije ove sve prisutnije djelatnosti. S tim u vezi, ovaj rad tematizira važnu ulogu visokoškolskih biblioteka u izdavačkim programima univerziteta, izdvajajući dva osnovna načina na koji biblioteke daju svoj doprinos ovim procesima: kao izdavači i kao podrška izdavačkoj djelatnosti univerziteta. Rad problematizira u bosanskohercegovačkoj naučnoj i stručnoj literaturi iz bibliotečko-informacijskih nauka nedostajuće diskusije o prednostima uključivanja visokoškolskih biblioteka u izradu strategija unapređenja izdavačke djelatnosti univerziteta, odnosno uspostavljanja efikasnog sistema upravljanja naukom i inovacijama te poticanja izvrsnosti i relevantnosti naučnih istraživanja. Oslanjajući se na iskustvo akademskih biblioteka u korištenju i diseminiranju naučnih informacija unutar sistema naučne komunikacije, u radu se donosi zaključak da efikasno pozicioniranje akademske biblioteke u izdavaštvu naučnih informacija može proširiti i diverzificirati izdavačku djelatnost univerziteta, posebno u kontekstu inicijativa otvorenog pristupa (OA, engl. open access) te principa otvorene nauke (OS, engl. open science)., Collecting, processing, storing, preserving and disseminating scientific products of academic staff are essential for building the prestige of a university, especially bearing in mind that scientific publications have always been used as a means of evaluating the work of scientists. This paper argues for the need to involve academic libraries in the implementation of various university publishing programs oriented towards promotion or increasing the visibility of the results of academic research at the international level. Although librarians in academic libraries have the experience of collaborating in various publishing programs, such as e-journal publishing programs, conference proceedings, or technical reports, this paper will focus on the need for improving and adopting new roles for the needs of maturing and professionalizing of this prevalent activity. In this regard, this paper focuses on the important role of academic libraries in university publishing programs, highlighting two basic ways in which libraries contribute to these processes, as publishers and in supporting university publishing, emphasizing the benefits of including academic libraries in developing university publishing strategies. This paper focuses on the lack of discussions in the B&H scientific and professional literature about the importance of publishing in academic libraries, which from an economic point of view is indisputably important as a new source of funding on campus, which strengthens the financial independence of the university, especially in the period of establishing an effective science and innovation management strategy and encouraging excellence and relevance of scientific research. Drawing on the experience of academic libraries in the use and dissemination of scientific information within the scientific communication system, the paper concludes that effective positioning of the academic libraries in the publishing of scientific information can broaden and diversify the university’s publishing activities, especially in the context of open access initiatives (OA) and open science principles (OS).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the level of transparency of the libraries of Catalan universities that are members of the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC). Design/methodology/approach The analysis involved reviewing the information available on the websites of the ten libraries belonging to CSUC. For each library’s website, the presence of 18 indicators was explored. These indicators had been defined by the Commitment and Transparency Foundation (Spain). Findings There is a notable difference between the level of transparency of Catalan universities and their libraries. Moreover, the universities’ culture of transparency is not reflected in that of the libraries. Four of the libraries can be considered transparent because they have accomplished from 12 to 18 indicators; three can be considered “translucent”, due to their indicators ranging from 11 to 7 points; and three are considered opaque as a result of obtaining from 1 to 5 indicators. Practical implications There is a need to review the volume and quality of information that can be consulted on library websites, considering that all services and entities funded with public money must inform citizens of the principles that govern their management and the results obtained. Originality/value The information regarding transparency is incomplete and should be organised with parameters that make it easier to find. Libraries that occupy the lowest positions in the ranking all belong to private universities. Their poor results are due to the lack of information justifying their management or providing information on how the service is organised. Some conclusions of this study are very similar to those of the study on Madrid’s Madroño Consortium (Pacios Lozano, 2016) which has been taken into account in this paper.

Institutional repository is a collection of scientific and professional papers written and published in digital format by members of an institution. In this way, digital content is collected, stored, published and disseminated. Institutional repository provides scholarly community with prompt and direct exchange of information. Authors and their institutions share interest in building repositories – authors present their research to wider public and at the same time institutions provide their work to financing bodies and scientific community. In 2005 the project team of the Central Medical Library launched the project of establishing the institutional repository of the University of Zagreb School of Medicine. Librarians are most often initiators for setting up a repository because the knowledge and skills important for its establishing and maintenance are partially related to the managing of traditional library collections. Librarians' roles and responsibilities include the initial building of repositories and its implementation, and also imply continuous learning and keeping up with the novelties in the open access movement parallel to familiarity with copyright law and regulations. University of Zagreb Medical School Repository (http://medlib.mef.hr) was presented to the scientific and professional public in 2006. It was the first open access institutional repository in Croatia. The Repository stores scholarly content (full texts of articles, conference presentations, book chapters, etc.) published by the members of the School of Medicine as well as PhD Theses defended at the School of Medicine. At the end of February 2019, the Repository contains more than 2000 items – mainly scientific papers (1538) and PhD Theses (732). Being a part of the so called grey literature, dissertations are invisible to scholarly communication and therefore limited to a small user community. For this reason institutional repository is the best tool to ensure visibility and present results of the dissertation to scientific community and public in general. The Medical School Repository contains PhD Theses that have been defended at the School of Medicine since 2003. Download statistic (2011– 2018) show that full texts monthly downloads is between 10 000 and 20 000 and daily usage statistic show average 400 accesses. More than 80% downloads refer to dissertations. In 2018 total number of downloads was 137 319 with monthly average 11 00 downloads. Even 49 of the top 50 most downloaded papers in the Repository are PhD Theses. Author with the highest number (20 248) of downloads is a PhD Thesis author. This is not surprising because opposite to a published scientific paper that is disseminated through different media and platforms, PhD Thesis has limited accessibility. Medical School Repository enabled that dissertations became more visible and used. Through lecturing, the library’s web page and social network librarians stress the importance of accessing sources in digital form. Actively participating in building and managing institutional repositories in today's digital environment, librarians add new value to their traditional role of collecting, processing and storing knowledge. Librarians play an important role in the promotion of the repository and the open access approach in general.

Information literacy, "(…) the ability to think critically and make balanced judgements about any information we find and use. (…)” (CILIP 2018), is an important skill set for academia in the 21st century. Over the years since its first inception, it has become a key competence for academic librarians to offer to students. Although there has always been a need to find, evaluate, and effectively use information, the abilities needed to do so have just grown larger, more complex, and more important in the information and communication technology (ICT) environment. There is also a shift towards broader contexts, to connect information literacy with an active, effective and responsible citizenship (Virkus, 2003). Information literacy is about dealing with information overload – how to choose and decide what is useful and trustworthy. Hence, the focus of information literacy training was different from Bergen, with a large amount of electronic information resources in 2007, to Brasov, with less (Repanovici & Landøy 2007; 2014). Our common interest in information literacy in academic libraries also led us to reach out internationally, and apply for funding to support the development of IL in academic libraries in Republic of Moldova, and in the Western Balkans. In this paper, we will show examples of best practices from the projects. In the Republic of Moldova, we joined forces with Academy of Economic Sciences (ASEM) in Chisinau. First, we trained the ASEM librarians, and then we developed a new project, where we targeted all academic libraries in the republic. In this project, the libraries were supported to make IL trainings for their students, as well as Open Access and bibliometric services (Landøy et al 2017). Transilvania University of Brasov also participated in two Erasmus+ CBHE-projects: One in Armenia, Moldova and Belarus and one in Western Balkans. In both these projects one of the modules for staff development is “enhancing librarians’ development in teaching Information Literacy”. In this paper we will show how the collaborations from our libraries within development of information literacy and other issues, has been beneficial for students and academics at our universities as well as in the international projects we have participated in. acceptedVersion

Even though resource sharing between scholars is evolving rapidly, we still have paper-based interlibrary lending (ILL) procedures in use. However, the current business model of acquiring toll-access journals and e-books does not seem to fit very well with traditional ILL practices. In addition, the new models of peer-to-peer resource sharing between academics seem to be much more effective than ILL. Scholars arrange access to the needed publications by using legal (buying, exchanging) and illegal means (Sci-Hub, etc.) for accessing the publications they need. Furthermore, the demands for open access (OA) have increased, voiced not only by librarians and science funders but also by politicians. This development might change the scholarly publication ecosystem, even though older publications are still likely to remain closed. In the present paper, we contrast the ILL and usage statistics of Finnish university libraries with the use of ResearchGate, a popular academic social network, which we treat as an example of a peer-to-peer sharing service. Based on the data, we attempt to understand how resource sharing, on the one hand formally between institutions, and on the other hand informally between scholars, will develop in the digital and increasingly open future.
