The literary works of Chinese women writers became an important component of literature in the 1980s and 1990s, developing new trends, techniques and perspectives, and revealing the multiplicity of women’s experiences and private lives. The thesis seeks to fill a gap in studies of Chinese literature by examining post-Mao fiction published from 1986 to 2000 by Wang Anyi, Tie Ning and Chi Li from a poststructuralist feminist perspective, and offering fresh insights into their treatment of sexuality, subjectivity and femininity. In doing so, it contributes to the feminist study of Chinese women’s writing and to a better understanding of contemporary Chinese culture in relation to patriarchy, misogyny, feminism and transgression. Specifically, this thesis investigates how these three prominent authors positively assert the notion of sexual difference and form an alternative subjectivity that destabilises traditional humanistic beliefs in the patriarchal system. It analyses their creations of different representations of female subjectivity. It analyses how they negotiate women’s identities and spaces among diverse historical forces in their writing, challenging dominant gender narratives. While all the textual analyses in this thesis are commonly informed by poststructuralist feminist notions of female subjectivity, differences, transgression and spatiality, they demonstrate the writers’ different treatment of feminist themes in social, political and economic aspects. Wang Anyi highlights sexual awakening, the tension between sexual desire and social morality, and women’s self-preservation. Tie Ning discloses the negative effects of political forces on women, including female victimisation and male violence, and valorises women’s self-realisation and self-transformation. With a particular focus on economic aspects, Chi Li pays attention to women’s self-sufficiency and self-affirmation, internationally inspired ideals of femininity, urban consumer culture and sisterhood.

In my review-essay I focus on some questions left open in Ferraris’ book Documentalità. Its limits are the same as those of a descriptive metaphysics of the social world that does not investigate, but rather assumes as its starting points, problematic basic relations such as those between individual and intelligibility, the givenness of essences and our access to them, the difference between objects and objectification. Finally, Ferraris’ conflation of production and practice brings me eventually to the link conspicuously missing in Ferraris’ analysis: the subjects who produce and hand down the documents we decided to turn our exclusive attention to.

The paper studied by Yong-chi Li and R.F. Shen (2007) includes some problems regarding the application of the proposed Neural Network (NN) approach. A very limited number of data has been used as testing set (only 3 among 52 data sets) which should be 20–30% of the database. The NN application in the study is not a function approximation problem where same input must always lead to the same output. NNs cannot be used for such an application. Moreover the generalization capability of the NN model has not been investigated. This discussion, aims to points out controversial points of the paper.

Background The benefits of low-dose ketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and prominent suicidal ideation require further investigation. The effects of treatment refractoriness, the duration of the current depressive episode, and the number of prior antidepressant failures on ketamine efficacy also require clarification. Methods We recruited 84 outpatients with TRD and prominent suicidal ideation—defined as a score ≥4 on item 10 of the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)—and randomized them into 2 groups to receive 0.5 mg/kg ketamine or 0.045 mg/kg midazolam. We assessed depressive and suicidal symptoms prior to infusion; 240 minutes post infusion; and 2, 3, 5, 7, and 14 days post infusion. Results According to the MADRS scores, the antidepressant effect (P = .035) was significantly noted in the ketamine group up to 14 days than in the midazolam group. However, the antisuicidal effect of ketamine, as measured by the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale Ideation Severity Subscale (P = .040) and MADRS item 10 (P = .023), persisted only 5 days post infusion. Furthermore, the antidepressant and antisuicidal effects of ketamine infusion were noted particularly in patients whose current depressive episode lasted Conclusions Low-dose ketamine infusion is a safe, tolerable, and effective treatment for patients with TRD and prominent suicidal ideation. Our study highlights the importance of timing; specifically, ketamine is more likely to achieve therapeutic response when the current depressive episode lasted

Aims: This study aims to investigate the function of positive feedback loops involving noncoding RNA in diabetic wound healing. Methods: We developed a mouse diabetic wound model to confirm that hyperglycemia can impair wound healing. We also used an in vitro keratinocyte model in high-glucose conditions to investigate the mechanism of delayed wound healing. Results: MALAT1 was decreased in diabetic mouse wound tissue and can promote keratinocyte biological functions. MALAT1 could bind to miR-106a-5p to modulate the expression of ZNF148, a target gene of miR-106a-5p. Surprisingly, ZNF148 bound to a region in the MALAT1 promoter to stimulate gene expression. Conclusion: ZNF148-activated MALAT1 increases ZNF148 expression by competitively binding miR-106a-3p, generating a positive feedback loop that enhances keratinocyte function.

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a relatively common complication after spinal fusion surgery, which can lead to delayed recovery, prolonged length of stay and increased medical costs. However, little is known about the incidence and risk factors of POI after corrective surgery for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This study was performed to report the incidence of POI and identify the independent risk factors for POI after postoperative corrective surgery.In this retrospective cohort study, A total of 318 patients with AIS who underwent corrective surgery from April 2015 to February 2021 were enrolled and divided into two groups: those with POI and those without POI. The Student's t test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Pearson's chi-square test were used to compare the two groups regarding patient demographics and preoperative characteristics (age, sex and the major curve type), intraoperative and postoperative parameters (lowest instrumented vertebra [LIV], number of screws, and length of stay), radiographic parameters (T5-12 thoracic kyphosis [TK], T10-L2 thoracolumbar kyphosis and height [TLK and T10-L2 height], L1-S1 lumbar lordosis [LL], and L1-5 height). Then, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors for POI, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to assess the predictive values of these risk factors.Forty-two (13.2%) of 318 patients who developed POI following corrective surgery were identified. The group with POI had a significantly longer length of stay, more lumbar screws, higher proportions of a major lumbar curve and lumbar anterior screw breech, and a lower LIV. Among radiographic parameters, the mean lumbar Cobb angle at baseline, the changes in the lumbar Cobb angle, and T10-L2 and L1-5 height from before to after surgery were significantly larger in the group with POI than in the group without POI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that large changes in T10-L2 (odds ratio [OR] =2.846, P = 0.007) and L1-5 height (OR = 31.294, p = 0.000) and lumbar anterior screw breech (OR = 5.561, P = 0.006) were independent risk factors for POI. The cutoff values for the changes in T10-L2 and L1-5 height were 1.885 cm and 1.195 cm, respectively.In this study, we identified that large changes in T10-L2 and L1-5 height and lumbar anterior screw breech were independent risk factors for POI after corrective surgery. Improving the accuracy of pedicle screw placement might reduce the incidence of POI, and greater attention should be given to patients who are likely to have large changes in T10-L2 and L1-5 height after corrective surgery.

A simple and metal-free catalytic system composed of NaOtBu/DMF efficiently converted 5-HMF to FDCA with an 80.85% yield. 5-HMF analogues and various types of alcohols were also transformed to corresponding acids in satisfactory to excellent yield.

With the rapid development of infrastructure construction, some places have to face the problem of highway foundation disease, especially for the highway built on warm permafrost in cold region. In order to analyze the influence of confining pressure and vehicle load to the warm permafrost, the dynamic triaxial tests were conducted on the frozen soil extracted from highway in Yakeshi City. While the load frequency is 6 Hz and the test temperature is −1.5°C, we changed the confining pressure and axial stress amplitude, respectively, and then gained the deviator stress-strain curves. The test results show that the shape of deviator stress-strain curve is related to the deviator stress amplitude. When σ 3 = 25 kPa and σ 1 − σ 3 | max = 75 kPa, the hysteretic loops approximately appear rectangular and the dynamic modulus increases with loading time increasing for the compression effect. The specimen did not fail when the test stopped, and its hysteretic loop is stable. When σ 3 = 20 kPa and σ 1 − σ 3 | max = 100 kPa, the hysteretic loops become smoother and appear oval. The test stopped while the axial strain reached 5% after loading 1279 times, and the dynamic modulus decreases with loading time increasing. When σ 3 = 30 kPa and σ 1 − σ 3 | max = 115 kPa, the test stopped just after the 154th loop, and the hysteretic loop area linearly decreased with increasing loading time. The research conclusions in this article have numerous reference values for the highway design, construction, and operation built on the warm permafrost.

Background: Hemodialysis patients are at an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and are excluded from preauthorization COVID-19 vaccine trials; therefore, their immunogenicity is uncertain. Methods: To compare the antibody responses to homologous ChAdOx1 and mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in hemodialysis patients, 103 age- and sex-matched hemodialysis patients with two homologous prime-boost vaccinations were recruited to detect anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG levels and seroconversion rates (SCRs) 14 days after a prime dose (PD14), before and 28 days after a boost dose (pre-BD0 and BD28). Results: Both mRNA-1273 and ChAdOx1 vaccinations elicited immunogenicity in study subjects, and the former induced higher anti-RBD IgG levels than the latter. The SCRs of both groups increased over time and varied widely from 1.82% to 97.92%, and were significantly different at PD14 and pre-BD0 regardless of different thresholds. At BD28, the SCRs of the ChAdOx1 group and the mRNA-1273 group were comparable using a threshold ≥ 7.1 BAU/mL (93.96% vs. 97.92%) and a threshold ≥ 17 BAU/mL (92.73% vs. 97.92%), respectively, but they were significantly different using a threshold ≥ 20.2% of convalescent serum anti-RBD levels (52.73% vs. 95.83%). The seroconversion (≥20.2% of convalescent level) at BD28 was associated with mRNA-1273 vaccination after being adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and the presence of solicited reactogenicity after a prime vaccination. Conclusion: Our prospective, observational cohort indicates that a full prime-boost mRNA-1273 vaccination is likely to provide higher immune protection in hemodialysis patients compared to ChAdOx1, and this population with a prime-boost ChAdOx1 vaccination should be prioritized for a third dose.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a typical inflammation-associated cancer, and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common pathological subtype. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) mutations are the most common driver mutations of LUAD, and they have been identified as important therapeutic targets by EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin (IL)-17A, and IL-17A-producing cells were reported to be elevated in the tumor microenvironment and peripheral blood of NSCLC patients and to be correlated with tumor progression and poor prognoses. However, the pathophysiological role of IL-17A in NSCLC remains unclear, although some studies suggested its involvement in cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Herein, we observed that expressions of IL-17A and its receptor, IL-17 receptor C (IL-17RC), were elevated in LUAD tissues and were correlated with poor survival in different lung cancer cohorts. In LUAD cells with mutant EGFR, the IL-17A/IL-17RC axis was shown to enhance phosphorylation of EGFR and Met, thereby promoting proliferation and resistance to EGFR-TKIs such as afatinib. In LUAD cells with wild-type (WT) EGFR, we found that the IL-17A/IL-17RC axis enhanced EGF-induced EGFR activation and cell proliferation through causing impairment of EGF-induced EGFR lysosomal degradation. Collectively, our results indicated diverse impacts of the IL-17A/IL-17RC axis on EGFR activation in LUAD cells with WT and mutant EGFR and suggested that developing therapeutic strategies against IL-17A/IL-17RC would be valuable for LUAD treatment.

BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis and vascular inflammatory response have been considered as risk factors for non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) vascular infection. The study aims to assess the risk of vascular infection by measuring atherosclerosis severity, NTS vascular infection (NTSVI) score, and serum levels of inflammatory markers in people with NTS bacteremia. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted in two medical centers and two regional hospitals. Adults aged ≥50 years with NTS bacteremia who underwent computed tomography (CT) scan for revealing vascular infections were enrolled. The degree of atherosclerosis was scaled by a calcium score determined by a CT scan. Serum concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers were determined in the patients enrolled in a medical center. RESULTS Fourteen (20.3%) of 69 patients with NTS bacteremia had vascular infections. Calcium scores over the thoracic (12,540 vs. 3,261, P = 0.0005) and abdominal (9755 vs. 3,461, P = 0.0006) aorta of those with vascular infections were higher than those without vascular infection. All vascular infections were present in the high-risk group (NTSVI score ≥1), yielding a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 30.9%. Among 17 low-risk patients (NTSVI score

Colorectal cancer (CRC) refers to cancer that develops from the colon or rectum (parts of the large intestine). Signs and symptoms include blood in the stool, changes in bowel movements, weight loss, and fatigue. Since 1923, when the disease was first named, survival rates have always been unsatisfactory. Despite great advances in molecular biology and traditional treatment methods, many questions remain to be answered regarding cancer occurrenceand the underlyingmechanism. Medical doctors remain stymied regarding tumor recurrence and worsening disease after effective treatment. To better understand the relevant questions, in this study, 20 oncogenes and 20 anti-oncogenes were examined in relation to protein structure, from protein structure analysis and dynamic analysis methods to 3D structure analysis and systematic analysis of the structure‒function relationships of proteins. We hope that these analyses will help promote mechanistic research and the development of new treatments for CRC.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the urease enrichment degree of high-purity commercial urease and plant-derived crude ureases from sword bean (SWCU), soybean (SCU), and pigeon pea (PCU) on bio-cementation efficacy via enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation. The urease enrichment degree is defined as the urease activity per gram of organic matter in the urease solution. Bio-cementation efficacy was evaluated by the distribution and morphology of the precipitates and unconfined compressive strength. The results show that the urease enrichment degrees of the high-purity commercial urease, SWCU, PCU, and SCU are 1.08, 1.05, 0.57, and 0.31 mmol/min/g, respectively. The urease enrichment degree is the dominant factor influencing the pattern of CaCO3 distribution by affecting the organic matter distribution. The high-purity commercial urease-treated sand has the smallest calcite crystals (13-23 μm) and the lowest strength (172 kPa). For the plant-derived crude urease, with the decrease of the urease enrichment degree, the generated crystals become smaller, the CaCO3 distribution becomes less uniform, and the soil strength decreases. The SWCU-treated sand exhibits the best bio-cementation efficacy and is recommended to enhance soil strength.

Accurate representation of aerosol optical properties is essential for the modeling and remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols. Although aerosol optical properties are strongly dependent upon the aerosol size distribution, the use of detailed aerosol microphysics schemes in global atmospheric models is inhibited by associated computational demands. Computationally efficient parameterizations for aerosol size are needed. In this study, airborne measurements over the United States (DISCOVER-AQ) and South Korea (KORUS-AQ) are interpreted with a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to investigate the variation in aerosol size when organic matter (OM) and sulfate–nitrate–ammonium (SNA) are the dominant aerosol components. The airborne measurements exhibit a strong correlation (r=0.83) between dry aerosol size and the sum of OM and SNA mass concentration (MSNAOM). A global microphysical simulation (GEOS-Chem-TOMAS) indicates that MSNAOM and the ratio between the two components (OM/SNA) are the major indicators for SNA and OM dry aerosol size. A parameterization of the dry effective radius (Reff) for SNA and OM aerosol is designed to represent the airborne measurements (R2=0.74; slope = 1.00) and the GEOS-Chem-TOMAS simulation (R2=0.72; slope = 0.81). When applied in the GEOS-Chem high-performance model, this parameterization improves the agreement between the simulated aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the ground-measured AOD from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET; R2 from 0.68 to 0.73 and slope from 0.75 to 0.96). Thus, this parameterization offers a computationally efficient method to represent aerosol size dynamically.

The capability of chemical transport models to represent fine particulate matter (PM2.5) over the course of a day is of vital importance for air quality simulation and assessment. In this work, we used the nested GEOS-Chem model at 0.25° × 0.3125° resolution to simulate the diel (24 h) variation in PM2.5 mass concentrations over the United States (US) in 2016. We evaluate the simulations with in situ measurements from a national monitoring network. Our base case simulation broadly reproduces the observed morning peak, afternoon dip and evening peak of PM2.5, matching the timings of these features within 1–3 hours. However, the simulated PM2.5 diel amplitude in our base case was 105 % biased high relative to observations. We find that temporal resolution of emissions, differences in vertical representativeness between model and observations, as well as boundary layer mixing are the major causes for this inconsistency. We applied an hourly anthropogenic emission inventory and converted the PM2.5 masses from model level center to the height of surface measurements by correcting for aerodynamic resistance. The biases in the PM2.5 diel amplitude were reduced to 25 % in the improved simulation and the timing of diel variations were better captured. In addition, notable sensitivity of the simulated diel amplitude of PM2.5 (8 %) on the boundary layer height in the driving met fields were identified. Based on the improved model, we find that the diel variation in PM2.5 is driven by 1) building up of PM2.5 in early morning due to increasing anthropogenic emissions into a shallow mixed layer, 2) decreasing PM2.5 from mid-morning through afternoon associated with mixed layer growth, 3) increasing PM2.5 from mid-afternoon though evening as emissions persist into a collapsing mixed layer, and 4) decreasing PM2.5 overnight as emissions diminish.

Introduction Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been found to be strongly linked to several diseases. Although previous studies have explored the association between MAFLD and extrahepatic cancers, research on the relationship between MAFLD and gastric carcinoma (GC) and esophageal carcinoma (EC) is relatively scarce and requires updating. Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the association between MAFLD and GC or EC. Material and methods We conducted a comprehensive search for relevant studies published up to 5 August 2022, using the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases. To estimate the risk ratio (RR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI), we employed a random-effects model. We also conducted subgroup analyses based on study characteristics. The protocol for this systematic review is registered in the Prospero database under the registration number CRD42022351574. Results Our analysis included eight eligible studies, comprising a total of 8 629 525 participants. We found that the pooled RR values for the risk of GC in patients with MAFLD were 1.49 (95%CI: 1.17–1.91), whereas the pooled RR values for the risk of EC in patients with MAFLD were 1.76 (95%CI: 1.34–2.32). Conclusions Based on our meta-analysis, we conclude that there is a significant association between the presence of MAFLD and the development of GC and EC.

The cornea is the outmost ocular tissue and plays an important role in protecting the eye from environmental insults. Corneal epithelial wounding provokes pain and fear and contributes to the most ocular trauma emergency assessments worldwide. ZEB1 is an essential transcription factor in development; but its roles in adult tissues are not clear. We identify Zeb1 is an intrinsic factor that facilitates corneal epithelial wound healing. In this study, we demonstrate that monoallelic deletion of Zeb1 significantly expedites corneal cell death and inhibits corneal epithelial EMT-related cell migration upon an epithelial debridement. We provide evidence that Zeb1-regulation of corneal epithelial wound healing is through the repression of genes required for Tnfa-induced epithelial cell death and the induction of genes beneficial for epithelial cell migration. We suggest utilizing TNF-α antagonists would reduce TNF/TNFR1-induced cell death in the corneal epithelium and inflammation in the corneal stroma to help corneal wound healing.

Glioma is a type of tumour that starts in the glial cells of the brain or the spine. Since the 1800s, when the disease was first named, survival rates have always been unsatisfactory. Despite great advances in molecular biology and traditional treatment methods, many questions remain to be answered regarding cancer occurrence and the underlying mechanism. Medical doctors remain stymied regarding tumour recurrence and worsening disease after effective treatment. To better understand the relevant questions, in this study, 20 oncogenes and 20 anti-oncogenes were examined in relation to protein structure, from protein structure analysis and dynamic analysis methods to 3D structure analysis and systematic analysis of the structure‒ function relationships of proteins. We hope that these analyses will help promote mechanistic research and the development of new treatments for glioma.

The lifetime and concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) are susceptible to nonlinear production and loss and to the resolution of a chemical transport model (CTM). This is due to the strong spatial gradients of NOx and the dependence of its own chemical loss on such gradients. In this study, we use the GEOS-Chem CTM in its high-performance implementation (GCHP) to investigate NOx simulations over the eastern United States across a wide range of spatial model resolutions (six different horizontal grids from 13 to 181 km). Following increasing grid size, afternoon surface NOx mixing ratios over July 2015 generally decrease over the Great Lakes region (GL) and increase over the southern states of the US region (SS), yielding regional differences (181 km vs. 13 km) of −16 % (in the GL) to 7 % (in the SS); meanwhile, hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx) increase over both regions, consistent with their different chemical regimes (i.e., NOx-saturated in the GL and NOx-limited in the SS). Nighttime titration of ozone by surface nitric oxide (NO) was found to be more efficient at coarser resolutions, leading to longer NOx lifetimes and higher surface mixing ratios of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over the GL in January 2015. The tropospheric NO2 column density at typical afternoon satellite overpass time has spatially more coherent negative biases (e.g., −8 % over the GL) at coarser resolutions in July, which reversed the positive biases of surface NOx over the SS. The reduced NOx aloft (>1 km altitude) at coarser resolutions was attributable to the enhanced HOx that intrudes into the upper troposphere. Application of coarse-resolution simulations for interpreting satellite NO2 columns will generally underestimate surface NO2 over the GL and overestimate surface NO2 over the SS in summer, but it will uniformly overestimate NOx emissions over both regions. This study significantly broadens understanding of factors contributing to NOx resolution effects and the role of fine-resolution data in accurately simulating and interpreting NOx and its relevance to air quality.

Soil cementation based on microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) technology is a new research hotspot in the field of biogeotechnical engineering. However, due to the presence of only calcium bonds among particles, MICP-cemented soil shows obvious brittleness, which is the bottleneck of the application of MICP technology in geotechnical engineering. MICP-bonding technology can improve the shortcoming of high brittleness of the calcium bond by increasing the plastic bond among matrix particles. Based on MICP-bonding technology, this study isolated a high-efficiency strain named XR1

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are being used in various applications such as structural health monitoring and industrial control. Since energy efficiency is one of the major design factors, the existing WSNs primarily rely on low-power, low-rate wireless technologies such as 802.15.4 and Bluetooth. In this paper, by proposing , we strive to tackle the challenges of developing ultra-high-rate WSNs based on the 802.11 (WiFi) standard. As an illustrative structural health monitoring application, we consider spacecraft vibration test and identify system design requirements and challenges. Our main contributions are as follows. First, we propose packet encoding methods to reduce the overhead of assigning accurate timestamps to samples. Second, we propose energy efficiency methods to enhance the system’s lifetime. Third, to enhance sampling rate and mitigate sampling rate instability, we reduce the overhead of processing outgoing packets through the network stack. Fourth, we study and reduce the delay of processing time synchronization packets through the network stack. Fifth, we propose a low-power node design particularly targeting vibration monitoring. Sixth, we use our node design to empirically evaluate energy efficiency, sampling rate, and data rate. We leave large-scale evaluations as future work.

Traditional Chinese medicine contains arsenic (As), which in the natural environment accumulates in plants during the growth of Chinese medicinal materials; there are mineral medicines containing As in Chinese patent medicine such as As4S4, As2S3, etc. Due to the toxicity of As-containing compounds and its role in inflammation and treatment of cancers such as leukemia, it is necessary to analyze the chemical form of As. A comprehensive investigation of the compound forms of heavy metals rather than the simple total amount of elements will lay the foundation for the scientific and objective evaluation of the safety of heavy metals. This article summarizes the speciation of As in bulk Chinese medicinal materials and Chinese patent medicines in recent years, and reviews the main research methods of As speciation analysis. The separation and detection combined analysis method focuses on the high-performance liquid chromatography-plasma mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectroscopy, etc. Taking the advanced synchrotron radiation source as the research platform, the use of X-ray near edge absorption fine structure spectrum and micro-area X-ray fluorescence analysis as a microscopic analysis technique supports direct analysis of the As speciation in situ. High-voltage and fast-switching silicon carbide (SiC) power modules are needed to construct high-voltage and high power-density converters. Stacking multiple low-voltage SiC devices to increase the equivalent blocking voltage shows advantages in on -state resistance, current capacity, and cost over one single high-voltage device. An indirect series-connected SiC MOSFET power module using quasi-two-level hybrid-clamp topology is proposed in this article. The voltages across the devices are automatically balanced with an open-loop modulation strategy to avoid sensors and control algorithm. Moreover, only ceramic capacitors are needed besides the MOSFETs and diodes in the topology. Thanks to this, the topology was highly integrated into a power module using SiC dies, which is equivalent to a general-purpose two-level medium-voltage SiC MOSFET power module. The switching losses of the power module show advantages over other stacking methods and even a single high-voltage switch and it can be evaluated with a two-level half-bridge (HB). To achieve this, the automatic voltage-balancing performance is analyzed in detail and the parasitic output capacitance in the topology is investigated, based on which the design considerations are presented. The simulation results from LTspice confirm the voltage-balancing and a 3600V/20A HB power module is built in the lab and the experimental results verify the design.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the largest environmental risk factor impacting human health. While PM2.5 has been measured widely across the world, there has been no high-resolution and gapless global PM2.5 data on a daily scale. We generate a global daily PM2.5 concentration at 1 km resolution using satellite gap-filled aerosol products and machine learning. Daily PM2.5 retrievals agreed well with ground measurements, with sample-, space-, and time-based cross-validated correlations of 0.93, 0.89, and 0.88, respectively. This enables us to unprecedentedly monitor the day-to-day variations of PM2.5, exposure risk, and mortality burden around the globe. More than 96% of the days exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended daily air quality guidelines (AQG) level (15 μg m-3) in 2020, and 99% of populated areas were exposed to PM2.5 risk at least one day; in particular, the proportions are 91% and 64% similarly in 7 and 30 days, respectively. The annual population-weighted mean PM2.5 concentration was 27.6 μg m-3 (~5.5 times higher than the WHO annual AQG level of 5 μg m-3), resulting in estimated premature deaths of ~4.2 million people and accounting for ~6.6% of total global deaths. Substantial differences are noted in many parts of the world between 2019 and 2020 associated with widespread episodes of wildfires or the COVID-19 shutdowns. The overall air quality in 2020 was significantly better than in 2019 in more than 70% of major cities. The global population-weighted mean PM2.5 decreased by ~5.1%, and the associated number of premature deaths dropped by 56,700.

IntroductionPrimary dysmenorrhea (PDM), the most prevalent gynecological problem among women of reproductive age, presents as a regular pattern of cyclic menstrual pain. The presence or absence of central sensitization (i.e., pain hypersensitivity) in cases of PDM is a contentious issue. Among Caucasians, the presence of dysmenorrhea is associated with pain hypersensitivity throughout the menstrual cycle, indicating pain amplification mediated by the central nervous system. We previously reported on the absence of central sensitization to thermal pain among Asian PDM females. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to reveal mechanisms underlying pain processing with the aim of explaining the absence of central sensitization in this population.MethodsBrain responses to noxious heat applied to the left inner forearm of 31 Asian PDM females and 32 controls during their menstrual and periovulatory phases were analyzed.Results and discussionAmong PDM females experiencing acute menstrual pain, we observed a blunted evoked response and de-coupling of the default mode network from the noxious heat stimulus. The fact that a similar response was not observed in the non-painful periovulatory phase indicates an adaptive mechanism aimed at reducing the impact of menstrual pain on the brain with an inhibitory effect on central sensitization. Here we propose that adaptive pain responses in the default mode network may contribute to the absence of central sensitization among Asian PDM females. Variations in clinical manifestations among different PDM populations can be attributed to differences in central pain processing.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) is essential for the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. However, the mechanism whereby TLR mediates the MTB-induced pleural mesothelial hyperpermeability in tuberculous pleural effusion (TBPE) remains unclear. Pleural effusion size and pleural fluid levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and soluble TLR2 (sTLR2) in patients with TBPE (n = 36) or transudative pleural effusion (TPE, n = 16) were measured. The effects of MTB H37Ra (MTBRa) on pleural mesothelial permeability and the expression of VEGF and zonula occludens (ZO)-1 in human pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) were assessed. Levels of VEGF and sTLR2 were significantly elevated in TBPE compared to TPE. Moreover, effusion VEGF levels correlated positively, while sTLR2 values correlated negatively, with pleural effusion size in TBPE. In human PMCs, MTBRa substantially activated JNK/AP-1 signaling and upregulated VEGF expression, whereas knockdown of TLR2 remarkably inhibited MTBRa-induced JNK phosphorylation and VEGF overexpression. Additionally, both MTBRa and VEGF markedly reduced ZO-1 expression and induced pleural mesothelial permeability, while TLR2 silencing or pretreatment with anti-VEGF antibody significantly attenuated the MTBRa-triggered effects. Collectively, TLR2 mediates VEGF overproduction and downregulates ZO-1 expression in human PMCs, leading to mesothelial hyperpermeability in TBPE. Targeting TLR2/VEGF pathway may confer a potential treatment strategy for TBPE.
