Peaceful co-existence is a universal but elusive aspiration. Despite the search for tools to create a peaceful world, conflict remains between nations and within nations. The fostering of peace is a question to which scholars, religious leaders and politicians put their minds, but despite this attention the paradox remains that there is little evidence that local and global conflict have subsided. Ideally the key to providing solutions can be found in the tenets of the world’s major religions and cultural traditions and in the musing of some of the great philosophy voices of past and modern times. Regrettably these tenets are often absent in education systems where there are limited endeavours to encourage young people to think locally and globally about social justice, peace and human rights. Many of the current ways of imparting knowledge of human rights and peace are limited, with the emphasis on the legal aspect alone and on international instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Although the UDHR is an inspiring document given that its creation stemmed from a commitment to all humanity, its uncritical acceptance negates the critiques about western dominance. Arguably, unless humankind can find a way to grapple with the tension between universal and relativist approaches to human rights by acknowledging diversity, the search for peace and social justice will be limited. This paper contemplates the creation of human rights understandings beyond legal constructs to explore how human rights concepts can be invoked through education to reduce ignorance, prejudice, religious intolerance and fear that detracts from the goal of peaceful co-existence. It explores the question of responsibility to ‘the other’, a form of responsibility that is not apparent in the clash of cultures and the conflict between nations. The paper suggests a schema for human rights understandings based on philosophical, political, historical, anthropological, legal and practical approaches to human rights. This includes forging the connection between theory and practice; engaging in critical pedagogy through a process of collaborative dialogue and inquiry; being familiar with the historical origins of human rights and their application; and understanding that concepts of human rights are found in every cultural and religious tradition. In advocating such a schema it draws on examples that present barriers and prospects and in so doing outlines the endeavours that take place in the inter-disciplinary Master of Human Rights program at Curtin University in Australia as a model that may be adaptable to other contexts. The paper concludes by suggesting practical ways in which the schema could be enacted including through a lifetime educational commitment to human rights through historical and philosophical understandings, inter-faith dialogue and cultural exchanges. همزیستی مسالمت‌آمیز یک آرمان جهانی، اما دست‌نیافتنی است. به‌رغم جستجوی ابزار برای ایجاد جهانی صلح‌آمیز، درگیری میان ملت ­ها و درون ملت ­ها همچنان ادامه دارد. پرورش صلح موضوعی است که علما، رهبران مذهبی و سیاستمداران ذهن خود را به آن معطوف می­ کنند، اما با وجود این توجه، این پارادوکس باقی می­ ماند که شواهد کمی درباره کاهش درگیری­های محلی و جهانی وجود دارد. در حالت ایده آل، کلید ارائه راه‌حل را می‌توان در اصول اصلی ادیان و سنت­ های فرهنگی جهان و در ذهن برخی از صداهای بزرگ فلسفه دوران گذشته و مدرن یافت. متأسفانه این اصول اغلب در سیستم ­های آموزشی که تلاش ­های محدودی برای تشویق جوانان به تفکر محلی و جهانی درباره عدالت اجتماعی، صلح و حقوق بشر انجام می­ شود، وجود ندارد. بسیاری از روش­ های فعلی انتقال دانش حقوق بشر و صلح محدود است و تنها بر جنبه حقوقی و اسناد بین ­المللی، مانند اعلامیه جهانی حقوق بشر (UDHR) تأکید شده است. «UDHR» سندی الهام‌بخش است؛ زیرا مبنای آن برآمده از تعهد به بشریت است، اما پذیرش غیر انتقادی آن، انتقادات درباره سلطه غرب را نفی می­کند. قطعاً جستجوی صلح و عدالت اجتماعی محدودیت ­هایی خواهد داشت، مگر اینکه بشر راهی پیدا کند که بتواند با تنش میان رویکردهای جهانی و نسبی‌گرایی به حقوق بشر، دست‌وپنجه نرم کند. این نوشتار ایجاد مفاهیم حقوق بشری فراتر از چهارچوب‌های قانونی برای کشف چگونگی استناد به مفاهیم حقوق بشر از طریق آموزش برای کاهش جهل، تعصب، عدم تحمل مذهبی و ترس را که از اهداف همزیستی مسالمت‌آمیز هستند، بررسی می­کند. همچنین، مسئولیت در قبال دیگران را بررسی می­کند؛ نوعی مسئولیت که در برخورد فرهنگ­ ها و درگیری میان ملت ­ها مشهود نیست. این نوشتار طرح و برنامه ­ای را برای درک حقوق بشر بر اساس رویکردهای فلسفی، سیاسی، تاریخی، انسان‌شناسی، حقوقی و عملی حقوق بشر پیشنهاد می­ کند. که شامل ایجاد ارتباط بین نظریه و عمل است و عبارت است از: مشارکت در آموزش انتقادی از طریق فرایند گفتگو و تحقیق مشترک، آشنایی با ریشه‌های تاریخی حقوق بشر و کاربرد آن‌ها و درک اینکه مفاهیم حقوق بشر در هر سنت فرهنگی و مذهبی یافت می‌شود برای دفاع از این الگو، نمونه ­هایی را ارائه می ­دهد که موانع و چشم‌اندازهای موجود را نشان می ­دهد. در این راستا، اقداماتی را که در برنامه کارشناسی ارشد حقوق بشر دانشگاه کرتین در استرالیا انجام می­شود به‌عنوان مدلی که ممکن است با دیگر زمینه­ ها سازگار باشد، معرفی می­ کند. در پایان، پیشنهادهایی برای روش ­های عملی که با آن می­ توان این طرح را به اجرا گذاشت، ارائه می‌گردد؛ ازجمله: تعهد آموزشی مادام‌العمر به حقوق بشر از طریق درک تاریخی و فلسفی، گفتگوی میان ادیان و تبادلات فرهنگی.

Freedom of religion in the sense of freedom of belief and of religious manifestations; in teaching, practice, worship and observance is one of the basic human rights laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, art. 18. Freedom of religion in this sense is considered to be an important right and to play an important role in keeping up social peace in society. Germany, being a secular state with a historical connection to Christian religion, has anchored this right of religious freedom in is constitution in Article 4.According to Art. 7/3 religious education in state- run schools is accomplished in accordance with the religious communities. This religious education is normally provided for by the Catholic and Protestant Churches, but also by the Jewish community. There are 3,2 Mio Muslims in Germany , especially from Turkey, but also from the Arab countries and Iran. Most of these Muslims do not plan to return to their native countries and will remain in Germany.They do enjoy freedom of religion in the above-mentioned sense. In my paper I will deal with the question of how religious manifestations of the Muslims in Germany “in teaching, practice, worship and observance “is accomplished. I shall focus on their religious education and endeavor to answer the following questions: What does Islamic education mean in Germany, in a secular state? Who provides for it and how? How does it differ from religious education in Islamic countries? How is it seen by the German society? I will deal with these questions on two levels (1) on the national level and (2) on the local level. On the national level a clear effort of the German state can be seen to integrate the Muslim minority as a religious group into the German state. For this reason the German Minister Wolfgang Schäuble convened in 2006 the so called “Islamkonferenz inviting jurists, scholars of Islamic studies and representatives of the different Muslim communities as well as independent persons to talk about the situation of Muslims in Germany. The unsolved question still is: how the different Islamic groups comprising Muslims from different social, political and religious backgrounds and from different countries as Turkey, Arab states, Iran, Afghanistan with different national Islamic traditions could find a common platform of religious Islamic belief in a secular state. By establishing the Coordinating Council (Koordinierungsrat) of Muslims in Germany in April 2007, some larger Islamic organizations tried to create a common structure for the representation of all Muslims. So far this organization has not been recognized by the German state as the official representative of all Muslims, but the discussions at the “Islamkonferenz” are not yet finished and are still going on. One of the main aims of the Muslim Organizations is to gain the right to give Islamic religious lessons at German state-run schools. Whereas on the national level the integration of Islam as a religion within the secular system is discussed, on the local level religious teaching is currently taking place within different projects in many selected state schools in Germany as well as in local mosques. Religious teaching at mosques will be discussed by taking the example of mosques in Goettingen, a small university town in Central Germany. There are two main mosques in Goettingen: one belonging to the Turkish community (Ditib) and the other being an Arab mosque. I shall sketch the concept of religious education given in this Arab mosque with regard to its content and the way it is taught to the children, whether it corresponds to the classical Islamic education and which concepts, beliefs, rituals and cultic acts are being considered important for children growing up in a completely secular context? Finally, I shall compare this approach at the local level with the efforts made on the national level and discuss how these different efforts are judged by the German society. آزادی دین به معنای آزادی عقیده و مظاهر دینی، در آموزش و تمرین و عبادت و رعایت آن یکی از حقوق اساسی بشر است که در ماده 18 اعلامیه جهانی حقوق بشر مندرج شده است. آزادی دین به این معنا حقی مهم تلقی می­شود که نقشی مهم در برقراری صلح اجتماعی در جامعه دارد. آلمان به‌عنوان یک کشور سکولار و دارای پیوند تاریخی با دین مسیحیت، این حق آزادی دینی را در ماده 4 قانون اساسی تثبیت کرده است. طبق ماده 3/7، آموزش دینی در مدارس دولتی مطابق با جوامع دینی و معمولاً به‌وسیلۀ کلیساهای کاتولیک و پروتستان و همچنین از سوی جامعه یهودیان انجام می­شود. 3.2 میلیون مسلمان از ترکیه، کشورهای عربی و ایران در آلمان زندگی می­کنند. بیشتر این مسلمانان قصد بازگشت به کشورهای بومی خود را ندارند و در آلمان اقامت خواهند داشت. آن­ها از آزادی دینی به معنای یادشده لذت می­برند. در این نوشتار، به این پرسش می­پردازم که چگونه مظاهر دینی مسلمانان در آلمان «در امر تعلیم، عمل، عبادت و رعایت آن» انجام می­شود. من بر آموزش دینی آن­ها تمرکز خواهم کرد و می‌کوشم تا به این پرسش‌ها پاسخ دهم: تعلیم و تربیت اسلامی در آلمان، در یک کشور سکولار به چه معناست؟ چه کسی و چگونه آن را فراهم می‌کند؟ تفاوت آن با آموزش دینی در کشورهای اسلامی چیست؟ توسط جامعه آلمانی چگونه دیده می­شود؟ در دو سطح ملی و بین ­المللی به این پرسش‌ها پاسخ خواهم داد. در سطح ملی، تلاش آشکار دولت آلمان برای ادغام اقلیت مسلمان به‌عنوان یک گروه دینی در دولت آلمان دیده می­شود. به همین دلیل، وزیر آلمان، ولفگانگ شوئبل، در سال 2006 تشکیل جلسه داد و از حقوقدانان، محققان مطالعات اسلامی و نمایندگان جوامع مختلف مسلمان و همچنین اشخاص مستقل برای صحبت درباره وضعیت مسلمانان در آلمان دعوت کرد. پرسش باقی‌مانده این است که چگونه گروه­ های مختلف اسلامی متشکل از مسلمانان با زمینه ­های مختلف اجتماعی، سیاسی و مذهبی و از کشورهای مختلف مانند ترکیه، کشورهای عربی، ایران و افغانستان با سنت‌های ملی اسلامی مختلف می ­توانند بستر مشترک اعتقادات مذهبی اسلامی را در یک کشور سکولار پیدا کنند. با تأسیس شورای هماهنگی (Koordinierungsrat) مسلمانان در آلمان، در آوریل 2007، برخی از سازمان­ های بزرگ اسلامی سعی در ایجاد ساختار مشترک برای نمایندگی همه مسلمانان داشتند. تاکنون این سازمان از سوی دولت آلمان به‌عنوان نماینده رسمی همه مسلمانان به رسمیت شناخته نشده، اما بحث ­ها در «Islamkonferenz» هنوز به پایان نرسیده است و همچنان ادامه دارد. یکی از اهداف اصلی تشکل ­های مسلمان، به دست آوردن حق برگزاری دوره ­های دینی اسلامی در مدارس دولتی آلمان است؛ درحالی‌که در سطح ملی، ادغام اسلام به‌عنوان یک دین در سیستم سکولار مورد بحث قرار گرفته است. در سطح محلی، هم‌اکنون آموزش دینی در پروژه ­های مختلف در بسیاری از مدارس دولتی منتخب در آلمان و همچنین در مساجد محلی در حال انجام است. آموزش مذهبی در مساجد با الگوبرداری از مساجد در «Goettin-gen» -یک شهر کوچک دانشگاهی در آلمان مرکزی- مورد بحث قرار خواهد گرفت. در گوتینگن دو مسجد اصلی وجود دارد: یکی متعلق به جامعه ترک (دیتیب) و دیگری مسجد عرب.اگر من مفهوم تربیت دینی را که در مسجد اعراب ارائه شده است با توجه به محتوای آن و نحوه آموزش آن به کودکان، خواه متناسب با آموزش کلاسیک اسلامی و هم مفاهیم، اعتقادات، آیین­ ها و اعمال عبادی ترسیم کنم، آیا برای کودکانی که در یک زمینه کاملاً سکولار بزرگ می ­شوند مهم تلقی می ­شود؟ سرانجام، من این روش را در سطح محلی با تلاش­ های انجام‌شده در سطح ملی مقایسه خواهم کرد و درباره چگونگی قضاوت این تلاش ­های مختلف به‌وسیله جامعه آلمان، بحث خواهم کرد.

It is widely accepted that the freedom to practice one's religion, and to live according to one's religious beliefs, is a basic human right, and the key to peaceful coexistence among religious communities and among nations. In my paper I will focus on the problems that arise when sincerely held religious beliefs come into conflict with the rights of others. Recently in the United States, two such situations have received widespread attention. One case involves pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control pills, because they believe that the use of certain kinds of contraception violates their Christian religious beliefs. The other case involves Muslim taxicab drivers who refuse to transport passengers carrying alcohol for similar reasons. In response to such conflicts, religious tolerance is often embraced as a solution. In western society, the ideal of religious tolerance can be traced back at least to John Locke, and received considerable attention in the work of political philosopher John Rawls. In recent years, tolerance has been embraced as a public value through programs that teach tolerance in public schools. But the ideal of tolerance has also come under criticism from theorists such as Wendy Brown, professor of political science at the University of California at Berkeley, and author of Regulating Aversion: Tolerance in the Age of Identity and Empire (Princeton University Press). Brown argues that tolerance is “an impoverished and impoverishing framework through which domestic, civil and international conflicts and events (are) formulated... The experience of being tolerated is inevitably one of being condescended to, of being forborne. The object of tolerance is constructed as marginal, inferior, other, outside the community, in some relation of enmity with the community.” Moreover, as the legal scholar Stanley Fish has noted, the doctrine of tolerance “legitimizes, and even demands, the exercise of intolerance, when the objects of intolerance are persons who, because of their over-attachment to culture, are deemed incapable of being tolerant.” What implications do these critiques of tolerance have for how we should address real-life cases of conflict between religious beliefs and the rights of others? “Obviously” as Wendy Brown points out, “it is always better to be tolerated than not, if those are the choices.” But I believe that there are possibilities that go beyond tolerance, that are based on dialogue. The importance of dialogue has been stressed by thinkers including Mohammed Khatami, and philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah of Princeton University, author of Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers (W.W. Norton). I will argue that productive dialogue between different cultures, or even between different segments of a culturally diverse society, requires more than just reasoned argument. Rather, it requires a deeper conversation that develops an understanding of each other’s history and everyday life and strives for a level of mutual trust and respect. In my conclusion, I will discuss the ways in which this kind of dialogue between faiths can contribute to the cause of peace.

At a time when religion has assumed a particular potency in shaping and defining inter-community and inter-state relations the world over, the need for evolving alternate understandings of religion to creatively deal with the fact of religious pluralism has emerged as a pressing necessity. This is an issue for concerned and socially engaged believers in all religious traditions. This paper deals with how, contrary to widely-head stereotypical notions, Islam can be interpreted to promote inter-faith dialogue and amity between followers of different faiths. This discussion centers on the work of a noted Indian Muslim scholar-activist, Asghar ‘Ali Engineer, seeing how he deals with the primary sources of Islam in order to develop an Islamic theology of pluralism and social justice. Given the fact that in many parts of the world today conflicts involve Muslims and people of other faiths, Engineer’s creative approach to the Qur’an offers us an alternate way of imagining Islam and Islamic rules for relations between Muslims and others.

So long as there is law there can be no universal human right to peace. This is because legalized violence, whether in threat or in deed, constitutes the very antithesis of peaceful relations from the point of view of those whom law represses. Law cannot define peace as the absence of all violence—and still less as the absence of all legalized suffering—without gainsaying justice, for as Pascal says, “Justice without might is helpless; might without justice is tyrannical.” Although legal outcomes, like falling boulders and pouncing lions, can always be imputed to historical causes, experience teaches that legal actors generally seek to legitimate their deeds by grounding the law in some non-causal narrative of the right or the good. According to a tenet of political liberalism that can be traced to Descartes’ discovery (or invention) of the irreducible “I” that thinks, the legitimacy of law’s narrative is both given and taken by free and rational politico-legal subjects. In truth, however, the Western philosophical tradition gives us two separate grammars for discussing what it takes to be two different kinds of rational subjects: the causal subject and the grounding subject. The causal subject stands in a relation to the world. Acting strategically as the cause of effects, it uses the object world and other human beings as means to its ends. But the causal subject is also itself caused: its desires and actions are effects of history in the largest sense of the word. Such a one is fated by grammar and custom to become an object and a means in its own right: an object for scientific inquiry and knowledge, for example, and, more generally, a means to the ends of other causal subjects. From the standpoint of the causal subject, there can be no human right not to use or be used as a means. Unlike the causal subject, the grounding subject is supposed to be a genuine origin rather than a mere link in an infinite chain of causes and effects. In Greek terms, this subject is an archē as opposed to an aitia. It also corresponds to the original Latin meaning of the word “sub-ject”: it is thrown (jacere) under (sub) its world as (not in) an unmediated relation to its projects. This second kind of subject has gone by many different names, including “soul” (Plato), “freedom” (Kant) and “Spirit” (Hegel). In one way or another, the idea of the grounding subject performs its primary task within the moral sphere: it is supposed to provide a secure foundation which explains how it is possible for its doppelganger, the causal subject, at once to accomplish something in the world and to refute Plautus’s notorious argument that man is wolf to man. If the causal subject reacts in the manner of an animal, then the grounding subject allegedly responds in the manner of an animal rationale. If the causal subject produces effects, then the grounding subject is supposed to create and bear responsibility for those effects. Given the foregoing distinctions, the most pressing juridical and moral question facing twenty-first century humanity seems to be: How can law and politics become at once effective and just, coercive and compassionate, responsive and responsible? How, in short, is it possible (to borrow Kant’s somewhat quaint terminology) to use oneself and other human beings simultaneously as ends and as means? But here, as elsewhere in philosophy, appearances can be deceiving, for this question presupposes far too much. This paper investigates the strong connection between the foregoing concepts of subjectivity and the notion of a just peace. The question is not, “Are there rational subjects and can they found something new, such as a just peace?” Instead, the question at the heart of the matter is how something as flimsy and ephemeral as an “idea” could ever found anything at all. I will attempt to unmask the terrible tensions or contradictions between justice and ethics, freedom and responsibility, and reason and compassion, and trace them to their origin: the will (or desire) to deny tragedy. I claim that the concept of the grounding subject represents a desperate and ultimately futile attempt to repress awareness of (and evade personal responsibility for) the essential sadness and tragedy of the world. Reason and faith provide the human body with a thin tissue of grounding statements comprised of symbols and images. At best these symbols and images are mere stimuli: action-triggers that will never adequately span the vast existential distance separating the grounding subject from the causal subject, our ends from our means, our words from our deeds, and, more generally, human suffering from the endless secular and religious casuistries we offer to justify it. تا زمانی که قانون وجود دارد هیچ حقوق بشر جهانشمولی برای صلح وجود نخواهد داشت. این به جهت آن است که خشونت قانونی، چه در عمل و چه در تهدید، از دید کسانی که قانون آن­ها را به اجبار سرکوب می کند، با روابط صلح آمیز بسیار متضاد است. قانون نمی­تواند بدون آنکه عدالت را نقض کند صلح را فقدان خشونت تعریف کند. همان طور که پاسکال می­گوید: «عدالت بدون قدرت بی­فایده و قدرت بدون عدالت مستبدانه خواهد بود.» هرچند عواقب قانونیِ حوادثی مثل سقوط تخته سنگ و چنگ اندازی شیرها همیشه می­تواند به دلایل تاریخی نسبت داده شود، اما تجربه به ما می­آموزد که بازیگران حقوقی به طور معمول برای قانونی و مشروع نشان دادن اعمالشان، قانون را بر اساس برخی روایت­های غیر علّی از «حق» و «خوب» پایه گذاری می­کنند. بر اساس یک انگاره لیبرالیسم سیاسی که نشانه­های آن در اختراع یا (کشف) «من» غیر قابل تقلیل، که فکر می­کند آشکار می­شود، مشروعیت روایت قانون توسط موضوعات آزاد و عقلانی سیاسی-قانونی اعطا و اخذ می­شود. به هر حال در حقیقت، نسبت فلسفی غرب به ما دو ساختار جداگانه برای بحث و بررسی آنچه را که مورد نیاز دو نوع موضوعات عقلانی: پایه­ای و علّی است، ارائه می­دهد. موضوع علّی در رابطه با جهان است. عملکرد استراتژیک از آنجایی که منشا اثر است، از جهان مادی و وجود انسان به عنوان غایت خودشان استفاده می­کنند. اما موضوع علّی به خودی خود ایجاد می­شود: خواسته­ها و اقدامات آن­ها متضمن اثرات تاریخی به وسیع­ترین معنای کلمه است. چنین فردی با چنین ساختار و سنتی تبدیل به یک مقصود و یک وسیله در حق خود می­شود: به طور مثال یک موضوع برای تحقیق و دانش علمی و به طور کلی وسیله­ای برای اهداف موضوعات علّی دیگر خواهد بود. از دیدگاه موضوع علّی حقوق بشر نمی­تواند وجود داشته باشد که مورد استفاده قرار بگیرد یا به عنوان وسیله­ای مورد استفاده باشد. برخلاف موضوع علّی تصور می­شود که موضوع پایه­ای یک منبع واقعی باشد، نه صرفا یک پیوند در زنجیره بی­نهایت علل و اثرات. در اصطلاح یونانی این موضوع یک آرخه در مقابل آیتیا است. همچنین این منطبق با معنای اصلی لاتین کلمه sub-ject است. موضوع دوم توسط بسیاری از مفاهیم مختلف از جمله نفس (افلاطون)، آزادی (کانت) و روح (هگل) تعریف شده است. در هر صورت، ایده موضوع پایه­ای کار اصلی خود را در حوزه اخلاقی انجام می­دهد: این مفهوم قرار است یک پایه امنی ایجاد کند و توضیح دهد که چگونه موضوع علّی به عنوان یک ظهور مظاعف ممکن است و همچنین به رد نظریه پولوتوس مبنی بر اینکه انسان گرگ انسان است، بپردازد. اگر موضوع علّی بر اساس شیوة حیوانی واکنش نشان می­دهد، پس موضوع پایه­ای به شیوه منطقی حیوانات پاسخ می­دهد. اگر موضوع علّی عامل ایجاد اثرات باشد، پس موضوع پایه­ای ایجاد کننده است و مسئولیت آن اثرات را به عهده می­گیرد. با توجه به تمایزات ذکر شده به نظر می­رسد مهم ترین مسئله حقوقی و اخلاقی بشر که در قرن بیست و یکم قرار دارد این است که: چگونه قانون و سیاست می­توانند به یکباره، موثر و صرف، قهرآمیز و دلسوزانه، پاسخگو و مسئولیت پذیر باشند؟ به طور خلاصه، آیا ممکن است (با استفاده از ادبیات ظریفِ) کانت، از خود و دیگر انسان­ها، به طور هم زمان به عنوان غایت و وسیله استفاده کرد؟ اما در اینجا مانند جاهای دیگر در فلسفه، ظاهر می­تواند فریبنده باشد. زیرا این سئوال پیش فرض­های زیادی دارد. این مقاله ارتباط قوی بین مفاهیم قبلی موضوعیت و صلح را بررسی می­کند. سؤال این نیست که «آیا موضوعات منطقی وجود دارد و آیا می­توانند چیز جدیدی مانند صلح عادلانه پیدا کنند؟» در عوض، سؤال اصلی و حیاتی این مسئله این است که چطور چیزی سست و بی­دوام، مانند «ایده» قادر است چیزی را پیدا کند؟ من تلاش خواهم کرد تا تنش­های وحشتناک یا تناقضات بین عدالت و اخلاق، آزادی و مسئولیت، عقل و دلسوزی را پیدا کنم و منشا آن را ردیابی کنم: اراده (یا تمایل) به انکار تراژدی. من ادعا می­کنم که مفهوم موضوع پایه­ای بیانگر یک تلاش نا­امیدانه و بدون هدف نسبت به خنثی کردن آگاهی (و فرار از مسئولیت شخصی) از غم و اندوه ذاتی و تراژدی جهان است. عقل و ایمان وجود انسان را با یک بافت نازک از اظهارات پایه­ای که شامل نهادها و تصاویر است می­پوشاند. در بهترین حالت این نمادها و تصاویر تنها محرک هستند: اقداماتی که هرگز به اندازه کافی فاصله وسیع وجودی جداکننده بین موضوع پایه­ای از موضوع علّی را گسترش نمی­دهند. همچنین غایات ما از منظورهایمان، سخنان ما از اعمال­ها، و به طور کلی از رنج­های انسان از سکولار بی­پایان و سفسطه مذهبی که در تلاش برای توجیه آن­ها هستیم.

Without doubt, Plato’s Republic is one of the most influential works in the history of philosophy, specially, in philosophy of politics. Although we find all branches of philosophical studies –from ontology and epistemology to psychology and education—discussed in this work, “justice” is central issue in it. On the other hand, of the kinds of governments discussed by Plato in 8th book of Republic, democracy is introduced as one the bad ones. For him, democracy, evolved from oligarchy, is not only a result of war and discontent, but also turns finally to its opposite, tyranny, through a wrong management of liberty and equality. Plato’s opposition to democracy –indeed only to a certain kind of it– shows that there is no necessary correlation between justice and peace on the one hand and democracy on the other hand. In this paper, having sated Plato’s view on justice, peace and democracy we will show what he regards as pre-conditions to reach justice and peace. جمهوری افلاطون بی‌تردید یکی از تأثیرگذارترین نوشته‌ها در تاریخ فلسفه و مخصوصاً در فلسفه سیاست است. در عین حال که تقریباً همه شاخه‌های فلسفه از هستی‌شناسی و معرفت‌شناسی گرفته تا علم‌النفس و تعلیم و تربیت در این نوشته افلاطون مورد بحث قرار گرفته‌اند، موضوع محوری آن‌را «عدالت» تشکیل می‌دهد. از سوی دیگر در میان انواع حکومت‌ها که افلاطون در کتاب هشتم جمهوری بر می‌شمارد، دموکراسی را یکی از حکومت‌های بد معرفی می‌کند به نظر او دموکراسی ـ که از تحول الیگارشی پدید می‌آید ـ نه تنها از جنگ و نارضایتی زاده می‌شود، بلکه به واسطه مدیریت نادرستِ دو مقوله آزادی و برابری سرانجام به ضد خودش، یعنی حکومت استبدادی، تبدیل می‌شود. مخالفت افلاطون با دموکراسی، که در واقع ناظر بر نوع خاصی ازآن می‌باشد، نشان می‌دهد که ملازمه‌ای ضروری میان عدالت و صلح از یک طرف و دموکراسی از طرف دیگر وجود ندارد. در این مقاله، پس از بیان نظر افلاطون درباره عدالت، صلح و دموکراسی، نشان خواهیم داد که او چه چیزهایی را از پیش شرط‌‌های رسیدن به عدالت و صلح بر می‌شمارد.

Considered as a fundamental virtue in the classical political thought, “friendship” even outshined the other important virtues like “justice”. However, the emergence of modernity and the consequent epistemological rupture caused to the prevalence of other concepts as “security” and “peace” over “friendship”. Thus, humans, as the wolves of each other, forgot about classical virtues including “friendship”. However, the contemporary criticism of modern thought shows the necessity of revival and reinterpretation of classical political concepts. Meanwhile, returning to the importance of “friendship” in the classical thought, Jürgen Habermas syncretizes “friendship” and “peace”, believing that with making “solidarity” central, those two concepts can be realized simultaneously in the society. Thus, “solidarity” is the source of legitimate norm establishing in the modern society. yle='font-size: 11.0pt;letter-spacing:-.2pt'>Plato’s opposition to democracy –indeed only to a certain kind of it– shows that there is no necessary correlation between justice and peace on the one hand and democracy on the other hand. In this paper, having sated Plato’s view on justice, peace and democracy we will show what he regards as pre-conditions to reach justice and peace. «دوستی» از جمله فضیلت‌های بنیادین در اندیشه سیاسی کلاسیک بوده است که حتی فضیلت‌های مهمی چون عدالت را نیز تحت‌الشعاع قرار می‌داد. با ظهور اندیشه‌ مدرن و بروز گسست معرفت‌شناختی، دوستی به محاق رفت و مقولاتی چون امنیت و صلح محوریت یافتند. بر این اساس، انسان‌ها به مثابه «گرگ» یکدیگر، فضیلت‌های کلاسیک را به فراموشی سپردند. اما نقدهای معاصر بر اندیشه مدرن، ضرورت احیا و بازخوانی انتقادی مقولات سیاسی کلاسیک را نشان می‌دهد. در این میان، یورگن هابرماس، با بازگشت به اهمیت مقوله «دوستی» در اندیشه کلاسیک، آن‌را با مقوله مدرنِ «صلح» پیوند می‌دهد و با محوریت بخشیدن به مقوله «همبستگی» در پی تحقق همزمان آنها در جامعه است. بر این اساس، «همبستگی» منبع هنجارگذاری مشروع در اجتماع است.
