Working under PWM voltage with fast voltage rise time and high frequency, medium frequency transformers may suffer from overvoltage and temperature rise in the winding. As a result, partial discharge may be triggered with high probability, threating the insulation reliability. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the insulation capability of medium frequency transformers with respect to partial discharge and deterioration. This paper introduces a test system based on power electronic modules that can generate repetitive pulse voltage. Then, by using this system, partial discharge inception voltage test under different temperatures and endurance lifetime test are conducted on Nomex paper, which is an insulation material usually used in medium frequency transformers. The results show the change trending of the partial discharge inception voltage of Nomex paper with temperature and indicate an accelerated aging of this material with the presence of continuous discharge.

In on-site measurement, as the transformer’s structure is often unknown, the application of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) is greatly limited in moisture assessment of transformer. This paper proposes a moisture assessment method for oil-immersed paper based on the dynamic characteristic frequency even for an unknown transformer structure. FDS tests are performed on the oil-paper insulation, corresponding oil-immersed paper, and mineral oil under different moisture conditions. The moisture criterion of oil-immersed paper and the influence of the structural parameters on the calculated frequency spectroscopy at different frequencies are discussed. It is concluded that the moisture criterion’s effectiveness, which indicates the sensitivity of assessed moisture content to the error of the tan $\delta $ , changes at different frequencies. Moreover, there are some frequencies at which tan $\delta $ is not influenced by structural parameters and is close to the measured value, which are regarded as “characteristic frequencies.” Based on the characteristic frequency, the moisture content of oil-immersed paper is assessed according to the frequency spectroscopy of oil-paper insulation without the structural parameters. The result shows that the assessing frequency changes under different moisture conditions, and the error of the assessed moisture content is less than 0.1%.

An emerging alternative to conventional Augmented Reality (AR) glasses designs, Beaming displays promise slim AR glasses free from challenging design trade-offs, including battery-related limits or computational budget-related issues. These beaming displays remove active components such as batteries and electronics from AR glasses and move them to a projector that projects images to a user from a distance (1-2 meters), where users wear only passive optical eyepieces. However, earlier implementations of these displays delivered poor resolutions (7 cycles per degree) without any optical focus cues and were introduced with a bulky form-factor eyepiece (50 mm thick). This paper introduces a new milestone for beaming displays, which we call HoloBeam. In this new design, a custom holographic projector populates a micro-volume located at some distance (1-2 meters) with multiple planes of images. Users view magnified copies of these images from this small volume with the help of an eyepiece that is either a Holographic Optical Element (HOE) or a set of lenses. Our HoloBeam prototypes demonstrate the thinnest AR glasses to date with a submillimeter thickness (e.g., HOE film is only 120 um thick). The Magnetic Observatory of Tatuoca (TTB) was installed by Observatório Nacional (ON) in 1957, near Belém city in the state of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Its history goes back to 1933, when a Danish mission used this location to collect data, due to its privileged position near the terrestrial equator. Between 1957 and 2007, TTB produced 18,000 magnetograms on paper using photographic variometers, and other associated documents like absolute value forms and yearbooks. Data was obtained manually from these graphs with rulers and grids, taking 24 average readings per day, that is, one per hour. In 2017, the Federal University of Pará (UFPA in the Portuguese acronym) and ON collaborated to rescue this physical archive. In 2022 UFPA took a step forward and proposed not only digitizing the documents but also developing an intelligent agent capable of reading and extracting the information of the curves with a resolution better than an hour, being this the central goal of the project. If the project succeeds, it will rescue 50 years of data imprisoned in paper, increasing measurement sensitivity far beyond what these sources used to give. This will also open the possibility of applying the same AI to similar documents in other observatories or disciplines like seismography. This article recaps the project, and the complex challenges faced in articulating Archival Science principles with AI and Geoscience.

The existing plethora of document classification techniques exploits different data sources either from the content or metadata of research articles. Various journal publishers like Springer, Elsevier, IEEE, etc., do not provide open access to the content of research articles, whereas metadata is freely available there. Metadata like title, keyword, and abstract can serve as a better alternative to the content in various scenarios. In the current literature, researchers have assessed the role of some of the metadata individually. We believe that the collective contribution of metadata parameters can play a significant role in classifying research papers. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the role of metadata, individually as well as in combinations to achieve the objective of research paper classification. Moreover, we have classified the research articles into ACM hierarchy root categories (e.g. general literature, hardware, software, etc.). In this comprehensive evaluation, we have assessed all the possible combinations of metadata features against different classifiers such as Random Forest, K Nearest Neighbor, and Decision Tree. The results of this research reveal that the title & keywords combination outperforms other combinations with an F-measure score of 0.88.

The time-to-failure for oil-impregnated paper (OIP) insulation is governed by two primary aging mechanisms: electrical and thermal. The electrical life can be represented as an Inverse Power Law, where lifetime is inversely proportional to applied electric field. The process of thermal aging on the other hand is established by Arrhenius Law, which relates the rate of aging exponentially to temperature. Due to thermal aging, the structure of insulation is altered owing to chemical changes like oxidation, polymerization, and cellulose degradation. For life estimation of a service-aged high-pressure gas filled (HPGF) cables, electrical endurance tests are normally performed at controlled voltage levels to estimate the time to breakdown. However, it is equally necessary to investigate how thermal aging influence changes in the electrical life of insulation. Therefore, in this paper, firstly short-term ramped stress tests are carried out on elevated thermal aged OIP samples extracted from already field-aged HPGF to find a rough estimate of breakdown voltages at different temperatures. Then, long-term electro-thermal step stress tests are performed on the samples to establish a correlation of temperature on the electrical life of the OIP insulation. The long-term stress tests produce reliable breakdown statistics and Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Inverse Power Law fitted on 2-parameter Weibull distributed breakdown data indicate a reduction of model parameter, n from 13.61 to 7.38 with an increase in temperature from 45 to 75 °C and a constant shape factor, beta of 1.50. The dissipation factor, tandelta related to the aging also shows an increase with temperature across a wide frequency range and is inversely proportional to the breakdown voltage.

Inclusion and accessibility in visualization research have gained increasing attention in recent years. However, many challenges still remain to be solved on the road toward a more inclusive, shared-experience-driven visualization design and evaluation process. In this position paper, we discuss challenges and speculate about potential solutions, based on related work, our own research, as well as personal experiences. Memory corruption bugs continue to plague lowlevel systems software, generally written in unsafe programming languages. In order to detect and protect against such exploits, many pre- and post-deployment techniques exist. In this position paper, we propose and motivate the need for a hybrid approach for the protection against memory safety vulnerabilities, combining techniques that can identify the presence (and absence) of vulnerabilities pre-deployment with those that can detect and mitigate such vulnerabilities post-deployment. Our proposed hybrid approach involves three layers: hardware runtime protection provided by capability hardware, software runtime protection provided by compiler instrumentation, and static analysis provided by bounded model checking and symbolic execution. The key aspect of the proposed hybrid approach is that the protection offered is greater than the sum of its parts – the expense of postdeployment runtime checks is potentially reduced via information obtained during pre-deployment analysis. During pre-deployment analysis, static checking can be guided by runtime information.

Theodolite is a framework for benchmarking the scalability of cloud-native applications. It automates deployment and monitoring of a cloud-native application for different load intensities and provisioned cloud resources and assesses whether specified service level objectives (SLOs) are fulfilled. Provided as a Kubernetes Operator, Theodolite allows defining, sharing, and archiving benchmarks and experiment configurations in declarative files. We demonstrate Theodolite’s benchmarking method and show how researchers and cloud engineers can execute existing scalability benchmarks or define new ones with Theodolite.

International audience; This paper presents the design and characterisation of an antenna on a paper-based substrate. The antenna is designed on a nanocellulose foil optimised with a highly conductive ink based on silver nanoparticles. The electrical and dielectric properties of the materials were characterised prior to the antenna simulation. The antenna is designed to operate at the ISM 868 MHz frequency band and has a maximum gain of +1.7 dBi. Its development is part of the first step in the implementation of a flexible battery-free geolocation tag, remotely powered by UHF Energy sources in the European RFID spectrum between 865.6 MHz and 867.6 MHz. An accurate characterisation procedure was carried out and the results show good agreement with the simulations.

Researchers face difficulties in finding relevant papers to their research interest as the number of scientific publication is rapidly increasing on the web. Scientific paper recommenders have emerged as a leading solution to help researchers by automatically suggesting relevant and useful publications. Several approaches have been proposed on improving recommender systems. However, most existing approaches depend on priori user profiles, and thus they cannot recommend papers to new user. Furthermore, the existing approaches utilize non-public contextual information, and thus it cannot adequately find similarities between papers due to copyright restrictions. Also, the existing approaches consider only single level paper-citation relation to identify similarities between papers. Considering the above challenges, this paper presents a collaborative filtering based recommendation approach for scientific papers that does not depend on priori user profiles and which utilizes only public contextual information. Using citation context, we utilized 2-level paper-citation relations to find hidden associations between papers. The rational underlying this approach is that, two papers are co-occurred with same cited paper(s) and two papers are co-occurring with same citing paper(s) are significantly similar to some extent. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, publicly available datasets are used to conduct extensive experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has significantly outperforms the baseline approaches in terms of precision, recall, F1, mean average precision, and mean reciprocal rank, which are commonly used information retrieval metrics. The novelty of this study is that, with the proposed approach, researchers are able to find relevant and useful publications over the internet regardless of their previous research experiences and research area.

In paper production, a jumbo reel is cut into multiple intermediate rolls, and each intermediate roll is then sheeted as finished goods. This problem is called a cutting stock problem and is proven to be NP-hard. The objective is to minimize material waste or trim loss from all the cuttings. In the case that any intermediate roll is not entirely used for its associated order, the intermediate roll itself could turn to be a dead stock. We use the concept of universal sizes of intermediate rolls to eliminate the dead stock. A pre-defined number of universal sizes of intermediate rolls is to be used to serve all the orders. The problem is solved using Reinforcement Artificial Bee Colony algorithm with Integer Linear Programming subroutine. This proposed approach is then tested with a set of 1,055 orders and 127 different sizes of sheet papers from a paper manufacturer. The results reveal that our method outperforms other algorithms. Our method offers the total trim loss of 3.51%, compared to the trim loss reported by the industry of at least 5%. This approach not only reduces the number of partially cut rolls, but also decreases the number of the jumbo reels needed to serve all the orders. Therefore, both the inventory cost and material cost can be saved.

The deterioration of the insulation in the windings of power transformers affects their lifespan. A commercial insulated Continuously Transposed Conductor (CTC) was studied experimentally, numerically and analytically. The purpose was to understand the mechanisms governing the mechanical failure of the insulating paper, and to achieve a criterion for predicting failure under different conditions. Samples of that insulated CTC were extracted from a coil and aged at 150∘C for different durations inside vessels filled with naphthenic oil. Then the degree of polymerisation and tensile, compressive and shear mechanical properties of the insulation were measured/estimated. Aged insulated CTC samples were subjected to three-point bending tests, producing deformations compatible with a short circuit, and the fractures in the insulation were analysed. The bending test over a CTC sample was simulated by means of a FEM Program. The Norris failure model, applicable to a lamina, was adapted to the studied insulation materials. The predictions of that failure criterion agreed with experimental observations.

With increasing demands on capacity and height- ened user density, it is imperative to propose approaches that exploit and utilise all possible degrees of freedom (DoF) of a MIMO system. This directly translates to increased channel estimation accuracy. With this motivation, in this paper, a novel MIMO antenna array system with a receiver of N antennas that includes a joint estimation of Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) and Direction-of-Departure (DOD) of the desired user in the presence of other multiple access users, is presented. This is achieved by using the concept of the “Manifold Extender” which increases the dimensionality of the observation space of the received vector- signals, and thus increases the DoF from N to N Next where Next is the extended dimension. The performance of the receiver is evaluated against the existing spatial-only and virtual receivers by computer simulation studies.

The explicitly numerical or well-defined correlations between the dielectrics responses (DRs) and dielectric essences of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) insulation have not been fully understood yet. As a result, it is rather difficult to quantitatively diagnose the critical insulation condition, like determining moisture content in insulation paper (MCP) of power equipment only using electrical-based techniques such as frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS). To obtain MCP value, from a new perspective of parametric study on the circuital DR equivalence of OIP insulation-extended Debye model (EDM), the present contribution introduces a novel approach by exploring the pattern when EDM parameters vary with MCP and temperatures T. Further, mathematical correlations are developed between sensitive R-C values and MCP-T values. On the above analysis, small-scale physical models of real-life transformer bushings were prepared as test samples. Their OIP condenser bodies were artificially absorbed different controlled quantities of moisture and conditioned at different temperatures to record corresponding FDS results. Then a hybrid genetic algorithm combined with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was proposed to estimate the EDM parameters by fitting the measured FDS data. Sensitive parameters therein were identified using subspectrum decomposition and formulated with MCP-T values so that a reliable moisture content estimation can be achieved once the testing temperature and FDS recordings of an insulation body are known.

Trap plays an important role in the charge transportation of three-layer oil-paper and the investigation of trap parameters at different degradation degree is of great significance for further research of the partial discharge (PD) mechanism. This article considers the turn-to-turn structure of on-board traction transformer. A defect model of three-layer oil-paper insulation was designed for PD test. The PD degradation samples are selected from the inception of PD to the breakdown of PD to study the characteristics of surface potential decay on degradation samples by using isothermal surface potential decay method. Given that, the trap distribution at different degradation stages was calculated and its influence on PD characteristics was investigated. The result shows that AC fluctuation voltages caused by inter-harmonic has a great influence on PD distribution, surface charge distribution and trap distribution. With the increase of degradation, the decay rate of surface potential increases and the decay rate of AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that pure AC. And also, the number of shallow trap with AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that with pure AC. The rate of free charge increases with the number of shallow trap increasing. More free electrons involves in the process of PD, accelerating the aging rate of three-layer oil paper samples. Therefore, it can be concluded that surface charge and trap distribution are helpful to clarify PD mechanism.

The oil-paper insulation system is widely used for the insulation purposes of power transformers as a result of its ability to withstand high thermal and electrical stresses. The presence of a gas cavity between impregnated papers layer is a serious problem. When localized breakdown takes place within this cavity, partial discharge (PD) occurs and ages the rest of the insulation system. This aging phenomenon declines the expected life time of the insulation system and subsequently the life time of the power transformers. Dissolved gas analysis is a recommended technique that is used in order to assess the state of the insulation system inside the transformers. In this paper, PD is recorded in the case of gas cavity presence between the layers of the impregnated papers under the effect of AC and DC voltage stress. This record is extended from the instance of PD inception until the breakdown of the whole insulation system. Furthermore, the concentration of the gases that dissolve in the insulating oil due to the aging of the impregnated paper is measured eight times during the record of the PD. Finally, the degradation of the insulating papers is studied optically through the use of a microscope at different stages of the aging test. Depending on PD measurements, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) results, and the optical study of the paper aging, the evolution of the aging of oil-paper insulation system as a result of internal PD is declared when AC and DC voltage stresses are applied. It is obtained that the aging evolutionary process totally differs with the alteration of the applied voltage.

An electrical tree discharge model of multilayer insulation paper was prepared, and a voltage of 20 kV was used for electrical tree cultivation and initiation tests. Based on the microscopic image information and partial discharge (PD) information during the aging of the electrical tree, the development of electrical tree discharges between layers of paper comprising epoxy resin-impregnated paper insulation was studied. The results show that, by analysing PD information such as the discharge volume phase spectrum and the discharge repetition rate phase spectrum, the development of the electrical tree branch progresses in four stages: initial, growth, stagnation, and bursting. During the growth and stagnation stages, the main discharge paths of the electrical tree are mainly formed, and there are many filamentous fibres on the path edge. During the burst stage, more branches will be formed on the electrical tree, which will cause the greatest damage to the insulation. With the extension of the electrical tree path, the discharge magnitude and discharge times also increase. There are specific discharge patterns in different growth stages of the electrical tree, and the number of discharge events in each positive half-cycle is significantly greater than that in a negative half-cycle. Combining the microscopic image information and PD information during the aging of such an electrical tree, a theoretical basis for evaluating insulation state by PD monitoring is realised. The long-chain molecules of cellulose and epoxy resin break bonds and oxidise, which decompose into a large number of free radicals, monosaccharides, and other low-molecular-weight products.

The low frequency section of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) of oil-paper insu- lation system can effectively reflect the ageing state and moisture of the oil-immersed paper. Meanwhile, steady-state insulation resistance is the one of indexes for the condition of transformer. In actual measurement, these two both are time-consuming and poor accessibility, thereby restraining their field applications. Aim at this problem, this paper analyses the polarization process of the oil-paper insulation in transformer, and adopts a low frequency equivalent circuit model for the oil-paper insulation to characterize the polarization process at low frequency. The simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is proposed to identify the parameters in equivalent circuit, which are affected by change of insulation state. Compared with the experimental results, the errors of the steady-state insulation resistance and the tan δ below 10-3 Hz, which are calculated by the identified parameters, are less than 2.5%. This method can avoid the influence from external environment and reduce the measurement time. The time and frequency domain parameters calculated can provide reference for the ageing assessment of oil-immersed paper.

In this work, Schottky diodes based on amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) were fabricated on cellulose microfiber paper substrate. Silver lines used as the Schottky barrier were printed, in parallel to thermally evaporated Cr/Au ohmic contact, using a dispense printer. The morphological and electrical characteristics of the devices are presented. The fabricated diodes exhibited rectification ratios ranging from 3.4 to 34.9 at ±1V with ON voltages that range from 1.1V to 1.4 V, for device lengths (Ag to Au distance) from 145 µm to 894 µm. The diodes were characterized in a temperature range between 25°C and 80°C. They showed a decrease of the ON current when increasing temperature, which is mainly attributed to the change of the cellulose microstructure. Indeed, an opposite of the ON current behavior was registered when the diode was realized on a polyimide substrate. The realized flexible paper-based diodes offer a potential promising choice for printed environmental-friendly electronics.

The single-mode bosonic channel is addressed with classical interference in the modulation and with side information at the transmitter. This model can viewed as the quantum counterpart of the classical random-parameter Gaussian channel. Based on Costa's writing-on-dirty-paper result (1983), the effect of the channel parameter can be canceled even when the decoder has no side information, and regardless of the input power constraint. For both homodyne and heterodyne detection with a coherent-state protocol, the model reduces to a classical channel with either real or complex-valued Gaussian noise. Thereby, by applying Costa's dirty paper coding strategy, we observe that the effect of the classical interference can be canceled for those channels as well. Then, we consider the bosonic channel with joint detection, for which the classical results do not apply, and derive a dirty-paper coding lower bound. Furthermore, considering the special case of a pure-loss bosonic channel, we demonstrate that the optimal coefficient for dirty paper coding is not necessarily the MMSE estimator coefficient as in the classical setting.

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was used as a tool Kraft paper. Using measurements of the DP as a function of irradiation time, a theoretical model was used to predict the local value of DP in the surface layer of the paper. After characterization of their mechanical properties, selected samples were exposed to oil flows mimicking ONAN, OFAF and reclamation conditions. The presence of a surface layer of low D Pled to significant surface roughening under high rates of oil flow,but no significant erosion. The findings indicate that the DP value at the surface is more critical than the average (or measured) D Pin determining the extent of oil flow related damage.

This paper is the first to provide a thorough system design overview along with the fusion methods selection criteria of a real-world cooperative autonomous driving system, named Infrastructure-Augmented Autonomous Driving or IAAD. We present an in-depth introduction of the IAAD hardware and software on both road-side and vehicle-side computing and communication platforms. We extensively characterize the IAAD system in the context of real-world deployment scenarios and observe that the network condition that fluctuates along the road is currently the main technical roadblock for cooperative autonomous driving. To address this challenge, we propose new fusion methods, dubbed "inter-frame fusion" and "planning fusion" to complement the current state-of-the-art "intra-frame fusion". We demonstrate that each fusion method has its own benefit and constraint.

Objective: We propose a MATLAB-based tool to convert electrocardiography (ECG) waveforms from paper-based ECG records into digitized ECG signals that is vendor-agnostic. The tool is packaged as an open source standalone graphical user interface (GUI) based application. Methods and procedures: To reach this objective we: (1) preprocess the ECG records, which includes skew correction, background grid removal and linear filtering; (2) segment ECG signals using Connected Components Analysis (CCA); (3) implement Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for removal of overlapping ECG lead characters and for interfacing of patients’ demographic information with their research records or their electronic medical record (EMR). The ECG digitization results are validated through a reader study where clinically salient features, such as intervals of QRST complex, between the paper ECG records and the digitized ECG records are compared. Results: Comparison of clinically important features between the paper-based ECG records and the digitized ECG signals, reveals intra- and inter-observer correlations of 0.86–0.99 and 0.79–0.94, respectively. The kappa statistic was found to average at 0.86 and 0.72 for intra- and inter-observer correlations, respectively. Conclusion: The clinically salient features of the ECG waveforms such as the intervals of QRST complex, are preserved during the digitization procedure. Clinical and Healthcare Impact: This open-source digitization tool can be used as a research resource to digitize paper ECG records thereby enabling development of new prediction algorithms to risk stratify individuals with cardiovascular disease, and/or allow for development of ECG-based cardiovascular diagnoses relying upon automated digital algorithms.

The interest in developing and testing dielectric nanofluids for electrotechnical purposes has increased significantly in the last ten years. A number of works have been published reporting dielectric and thermal properties for these liquids that enhance those of conventional insulating fluids. Some authors propose that the application of dielectric nanofluids to transformer insulation could improve the reliability of transformers and open new possibilities for transformer design. However, this will not be feasible until thorough studies on the interaction of these materials with other elements of the transformer, specially the solid insulation, are carried out. In this work, the effect of the presence of nanoparticles on the dielectric response of oil and oil-paper insulation is analysed in laboratory conditions. Specimens have been prepared to emulate the insulation system of transformers and the dielectric response in the frequency domain of these specimens has been characterized. The dependence of nanoparticle concentration on the dielectric response has been analysed. Proposing physical mechanisms that explain the experimental results observed over the oil and the paper samples. Some conclusions are extracted in this work that may be of interest if nanofluids are considered as liquid insulation for transformers.

The heat dissipation factor of conventional epoxy impregnated paper bushings is a subject of concern due to the large quantities of power in a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system. The present work deals with the selection of better insulation as a replacement to the conventional resin impregnated material employing nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride and nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride added with nano-cellulose-fiber. The bushing of the converter transformer is designed using the Finite Element Method (FEM), and the electrothermal analysis is performed at the loaded working condition. Besides, numerous optimization schemes are also presented for adapting the structure of the thermal conductor enclosed in the inner conductor. The electrothermal performances of the above materials with the optimized structure are compared and an advanced scheme is proposed. Further, the results obtained from the designed system are employed in the form of an Artificial Neural Network to simplify the process of thermal computation characterized by the selected scheme. The internal parameters of the neural network are tuned implementing a hybrid amalgamation of Particle Swarm optimization - Grey Wolf Optimiser and the performance is compared against the actual values. The supremacy of the implemented algorithm is justified by a comparative analysis with other well-established algorithms using various statistical parameters.

Quantum technology has made tremendous strides over the past two decades with remarkable advances in materials engineering, circuit design, and dynamic operation. In particular, the integration of different quantum modules has benefited from hybrid quantum systems, which provide an important pathway for harnessing different natural advantages of complementary quantum systems and for engineering new functionalities. This review article focuses on the current frontiers with respect to utilizing magnons for novel quantum functionalities. Magnons are the fundamental excitations of magnetically ordered solid-state materials and provide great tunability and flexibility for interacting with various quantum modules for integration in diverse quantum systems. The concomitant-rich variety of physics and material selection enable exploration of novel quantum phenomena in materials science and engineering. In addition, the ease of generating strong coupling with other excitations makes hybrid magnonics a unique platform for quantum engineering. We start our discussion with circuit-based hybrid magnonic systems, which are coupled with microwave photons and acoustic phonons. Subsequently, we focus on the recent progress of magnon–magnon coupling within confined magnetic systems. Next, we highlight new opportunities for understanding the interactions between magnons and nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum sensing and implementing quantum interconnects. Lastly, we focus on the spin excitations and magnon spectra of novel quantum materials investigated with advanced optical characterization.

Kevlar pulp treated with low-temperature plasma and nano cellulose fibrils (NCFs) have been introduced as reinforcements in the preparation for composite insulating paper with low relative permittivity, dielectric loss, good mechanical properties, and thermal stability. More polar groups of Kevlar fibers could be exposed after plasma treatment. Results showed that the relative permittivity of the composite paper containing 20% Kevlar pulp, 10% NCF, and 70% softwood pulp is decreased by 29.6% and the dielectric loss is decreased by 43.2% at 50 Hz, 25°, compared with the conventional paper formed by pure softwood pulp. The change was due to the introduction of Kevlar pulp with intrinsic low dielectric constant and loss, which decreases the whole polarizability of the paper. The mechanical properties of the composite paper became worse after introducing 20% Kevlar pulp. About 10% NCF can work as a mechanical reinforcement to compensate for the tensile and Yang's modulus loss. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that NCF could fill the void defects and improve the interface bonding of the fibers to enhance the paper mechanical properties. The composite paper also had better insulating and thermal properties than the conventional paper. It has been concluded that the Kevlar pulp/NCF/softwood pulp composite paper has the potential to replace the pure softwood paper for the application of high-voltage ac transformer insulation.

This study explores the method of applying surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in diagnosing the aging stage of oil-paper insulation equipment in the power system, which provides access to the on-line mornitoring of electrical equipment. Oil-paper samples in different aging stages were obtained by accelerated aging experiments. Effective Raman signals of insulating oil were collected by using the self-made hexagonal sliver nano-plates SERS substrates and the self-assembled Raman detection platform. For the SERS data of oil-paper insulation samples, kernel entropy component analysis (KECA) was applied to extract the Raman spectral features and support vector machine (SVM) was used to recognize the the aging stage of oil-paper insulation. The results demonstrate that the KECA-SVM method exhibits a good diagnostic capacity and the recognition accuracy of the propsed method reached 81.43 % (57/70). In summary, a new spectral method is proposed to diagnose the aging stage of oil-paper insulation, which lays a foundation for the actual diagnosis of the aging condition in running oil-paper insulation equipment by Raman spectroscopy.

Researchers from academia and the corporate-sector rely on scholarly digital libraries to access articles. Attackers take advantage of innocent users who consider the articles' files safe and thus open PDF-files with little concern. In addition, researchers consider scholarly libraries a reliable, trusted, and untainted corpus of papers. For these reasons, scholarly digital libraries are an attractive-target and inadvertently support the proliferation of cyber-attacks launched via malicious PDF-files. In this study, we present related vulnerabilities and malware distribution approaches that exploit the vulnerabilities of scholarly digital libraries. We evaluated over two-million scholarly papers in the CiteSeerX library and found the library to be contaminated with a surprisingly large number (0.3-2%) of malicious PDF documents (over 55% were crawled from the IPs of US-universities). We developed a two layered detection framework aimed at enhancing the detection of malicious PDF documents, Sec-Lib, which offers a security solution for large digital libraries. Sec-Lib includes a deterministic layer for detecting known malware, and a machine learning based layer for detecting unknown malware. Our evaluation showed that scholarly digital libraries can detect 96.9% of malware with Sec-Lib, while minimizing the number of PDF-files requiring labeling, and thus reducing the manual inspection efforts of security-experts by 98%.

When the inner insulation of oil-impregnated paper bushing breaks down in service, gases decomposed by oil and paper may cause an explosion. The explosion of bushing occurs from time to time because of the lack of an effective monitoring method. In order to provide an effective online monitoring method for the bushing to avoid explosion, this paper presents a method to monitor the PD defect in bushing by measuring the inner pressure of bushing. In this paper, the relationship of variation between characteristic gases content and inner pressure is studied, the effect of inner temperature on inner pressure is analyzed and the method for reducing this effect is also presented, and the monitoring method is proved to be useful by PD tests on a real bushing. The results show that the inner pressure increases obviously due to the generation of characteristic gases by internal discharge in oil-impregnated paper bushing, and the pressure increases with the deterioration of the discharge; although the inner pressure has a great influence on the inner pressure, the influence can be reduced or eliminated greatly by the method of common-mode rejection. According to the results, the internal discharge defect of the oil-impregnated paper bushing can be detected by monitoring the pressure, and the bushing explosion can be avoided.

Paper-based strain sensors have attracted attention as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to wearable electronic devices. This paper proposes a paper-based strain sensor created solely using hand-painting, which is a simple, equipment-free process utilized in green electronics. Commercial printing paper is coated with polydimethylsiloxane diluted with heptane, which provides moisture resistance and mechanical robustness while increasing the hydrophobicity of the surface. The electrodes and conduction channels are fabricated using a pencil for graphite deposition and a brush for the deposition of tin-doped indium oxide nanoparticles, respectively. With a gauge factor of 41.98 in tensile strain tests and 21.36 in compressive strain tests, our strain sensor exhibits a good sensitivity that is similar to that of previously reported paper-based sensors. We also demonstrate that our proposed strain sensor can be used as a weak motion detection device for humans and robots.

The aging of the transformer oil-paper insulation distributes spatially, which results in changes in paper resistivity in different regions. This paper establishes an iterative inversion algorithm using the finite element method to calculate the oil-immersed paper resistivity in different regions of a transformer. This algorithm sets the transformer dielectric loss factor tan δ at low frequency, the dielectric parameters of the transformer oil as inputs and the oil-immersed paper resistivity as output. The resistivity obtained from inversion can be used as a reference to access the insulation state of the oil-paper insulation. This paper aims at achieving the nondestructive detection of the partial state of the oil-paper insulation.

Failures of bushing caused by corrosive sulfur has gradually appeared in recent years. Apart from copper and sulfur, certain amount of aluminum was also found both in oil and paper after disassembling. The corrosion mechanism of the aluminum foil and its effect on oil-paper insulation were unknown. In this study, series of sulfur corrosion experiments were taken to investigate the sulfur corrosion of aluminum foil. The results showed the aluminum foil could certainly be corroded in oil containing corrosive sulfur (DBDS). Thermal products of insulting paper triggered the corrosion by removing the alumina film on the surface. Then, the contact corrosion occurred between aluminum and DBDS. In addition, the mechanisms of corrosion products generation both in oil and on paper were studied. The corrosion products in oil was DBDS-Al(3,4) and that on paper was RCOOAln. It caused the decrease of electrical properties of oil-paper. Particularly, the dielectric loss of oil and paper were dramatically enhanced.

The accelerating rate of scientific publications makes it extremely difficult for researchers to find out the relevant papers and related works. Recommender systems that aim at solving the information overload problem have attracted lots of attention. However, existing paper recommendation works generally rely on the simple citation-ships between papers, which ignore the heterogeneity of the academic graphs. In this paper, we solve the personalized paper recommendation problem in the setting of heterogeneous information networks. A heterogeneous graph representation based recommendation method named HGRec is proposed. First, the author and paper profiles are constructed based on the extracted contents information. Second, we initialize the node vectors by employing the word-embedding technique. Third, we jointly update the node embeddings in the heterogeneous graph by proposing two meta-path based proximity measures. Finally, the paper recommendation is completed by calculating the similarity of the generated author and paper feature vectors. We present experiments on a real academic network, the DBLP network. The comparative results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed personalized recommendation approach compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Our understanding of COVID-19 pandemic epidemiology has many gaps, with many challenges arising on a global scale. This paper looks at the problem at a smaller geographical scale, the extent of the campus of a large organization. Equipped with an asymptomatic testing program and rough location data from the campus wireless network, we make the case that epidemiological models may be informed from this new source of data, which offers fidelity at the temporal resolution of seconds and spatial resolution of a Wi-Fi cell size, in particular for the tasks of pinpointing clusters of cases and contexts of infection transmission. We sketch the design of a system that fuses the two foregoing information streams and explain how the result can be incorporated into standard epidemiological models of communicable disease, both for better parameter estimation in elementary models, as well as for providing spatial inputs into more sophisticated models. We conclude with logistical and privacy considerations we have encountered in an associated ongoing study, to inform similar efforts at other organizations.

The amount of scholarly data has been increasing dramatically over the last years. For newcomers to a particular science domain (e.g., IR, physics, NLP) it is often difficult to spot larger trends and to position the latest research in the context of prior scientific achievements and breakthroughs. Similarly, researchers in the history of science are interested in tools that allow them to analyze and visualize changes in particular scientific domains. Temporal summarization and related methods should be then useful for making sense of large volumes of scientific discourse data aggregated over time. We demonstrate a novel approach to analyze the collections of research papers published over longer time periods to provide a high-level overview of important semantic changes that occurred over the progress of time. Our approach is based on comparing word semantic representations over time and aims to support users in a better understanding of large domain-focused archives of scholarly publications. As an example dataset we use the ACL Anthology Reference Corpus that spans from 1979 to 2015 and contains 22,878 scholarly articles., Comment: 4 pages, JCDL-2021

In order to understand the aging process of paper used in high voltage transformers, transformer grade Kraft paper samples were aged in a fan oven in order to access the full range of DP values from 1100 (new) to ~200 (end of life). The absence of significant oxidation was verified by infrared spectroscopy and the mechanical and dielectric properties were assessed as a function of DP. Whilst the dielectric properties (in the absence of water) were unaffected by aging, the tensile strength was reduced. This confirms studies in the literature which show that most transformer breakdowns occur through mechanical failure of the paper and crucially, provides a mechanism of providing paper samples of known DP for subsequent exposure to oil flow.

The use of vegetable oil (natural ester) in electrical devices like power transformers is increasing due to their high biodegradability and better safety. The lifespan of power trans- formers is mainly defined by cellulose insulation condition, which usually works together with dielectric oil as electrical insulation and also as mechanical winding protector and compactor. That is why the aim and results of this research shows us not only the dielectric parameters evolution, but also the relationship between the mechanical factors and the moisture content of thermal accelerated ageing processes, with commercial vegetable oil, of Kraft paper and Diamond Dotted Paper (DDP). These are two of the most common insulating materials in electric power transformers. In addition, the new tests have been done by a different method of paper ageing analysis. To improve the accuracy of user implicit rating prediction, we combine the traditional latent factor model (LFM) and bidirectional gated recurrent unit neural network (BiGRU) model to propose a hybrid model that deeply mines the latent semantics in the unstructured content of the text and generates a more accurate rating matrix. First, we utilize the user’s historical behavior (favorites records) to build a user rating matrix and decompose the matrix to obtain the latent factor vectors of users and literature. We also apply the BERT model for word embedding of the research papers to obtain the sequence of word vectors. Then, we apply the BiGRU with the user attention mechanism to mine the research paper textual content and to generate the new literature latent feature vectors that are used to replace the original literature latent factor vectors decomposed from the rating matrix. Finally, a new rating matrix is generated to obtain users’ ratings of noninteractive research papers and to generate the recommendation list according to the user latent factor vector. We design experiments on the real datasets and verify that the research paper recommendation model is superior to traditional recommendation models in terms of precision, recall, F1-value, coverage, popularity and diversity.

Tight assembly of stator windings with no insulation paper damage is a manufacturing challenge. We evaluate different sets of parts according to the following parameters: magnet wire thickness, stator slot smoothness, length of the straight magnet wire after the slot end, and type and amount of insulation cap at the end of the slot. These parameters have discrete values with small differences between them. The damage criterion is the decrease of the insulation paper breakdown voltage after assembly/disassembly of parts, assembled in a small set of designed experiments. Parameter values, i.e., levels at individual experiments are set by an orthogonal experiment matrix. Repetition of each experiment provides statistical significance. Data analysis shows that the additive model alone is not sufficient due to the high correlation of the parameters’ influences. We extend the model to include interparameter influences, which we model by adding a virtual parameter. The extended additive model generates parameter values that do not degrade the insulation paper breakdown voltage within the manufacturing process. These values are verified by repetitions of the control experiment.

We often point to the relative increase in the amount and sophistication of evaluations of visualization systems versus the earliest days of the field as evidence that we are maturing as a field. I am not so convinced. In particular, I feel that evaluations of visualizations, as they are ordinarily performed in the field or asked for by reviewers, fail to tell us very much that is useful or transferable about visualization systems, regardless of the statistical rigor or ecological validity of the evaluation. Through a series of thought experiments, I show how our current conceptions of visualization evaluations can be incomplete, capricious, or useless for the goal of furthering the field, more in line with the “heroic age” of medical science than the rigorous evidence-based field we might aspire to be. I conclude by suggesting that our models for designing evaluations, and our priorities as a field, should be revisited.

Image classification is a major application domain for conventional deep learning (DL). Quantum machine learning (QML) has the potential to revolutionize image classification. In any typical DL-based image classification, we use convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract features from the image and multi-layer perceptron network (MLP) to create the actual decision boundaries. On one hand, QML models can be useful in both of these tasks. Convolution with parameterized quantum circuits (Quanvolution) can extract rich features from the images. On the other hand, quantum neural network (QNN) models can create complex decision boundaries. Therefore, Quanvolution and QNN can be used to create an end-to-end QML model for image classification. Alternatively, we can extract image features separately using classical dimension reduction techniques such as, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) or Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) and use the extracted features to train a QNN. We review two proposals on quantum-classical hybrid ML models for image classification namely, Quanvolutional Neural Network and dimension reduction using a classical algorithm followed by QNN. Particularly, we make a case for trainable filters in Quanvolution and CAE-based feature extraction for image datasets (instead of dimension reduction using linear transformations such as, PCA). We discuss various design choices, potential opportunities, and drawbacks of these models. We also release a Python-based framework to create and explore these hybrid models with a variety of design choices.

The formulation of good academic paper titles in English is challenging for intermediate English authors (particularly students). This is because such authors are not aware of the type of titles that are generally in use. We aim to realize a support system for formulating more effective English titles for intermediate English and beginner authors. This study develops an extractive title generation system that formulates titles from keywords extracted from an abstract. Moreover, we realize a title evaluation model that can evaluate the appropriateness of paper titles. We train the model with titles of top-conference papers by using BERT. This paper describes the training data, implementation, and experimental results. The results show that our evaluation model can identify top-conference titles more effectively than intermediate English and beginner students., 6 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, 2 algorithms

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communications is one of the promising candidates for next generation wireless networks by controlling the propagation environment dynamically. In this study, a channel modeling strategy for RIS-assisted wireless networks is introduced in sub-6 GHz bands by considering both far-field and near-field behaviours in transmission. We also proposed an open-source physical channel simulator for sub-6 GHz bands where operating frequency, propagation environment, terminal locations, RIS location and size can be adjusted. It is demonstrated via extensive computer simulations that an improved achievable rate performance is obtained in the presence of RISs for both near-field and far-field conditions., NA

Multi-level modeling (MLM) as part of object-oriented modeling aims at fully utilizing the expressive power of multiple abstraction levels. While these levels where initially used to define domain-specific modeling languages, i.e. for linguistic purposes, the MLM community has long argued that there is much more to gain by tapping into ontological abstraction levels. While MLM is a rather specialized research field, there are now quite a number of different proposals. There is thus an opportunity to develop a uniform core of MLM that then possibly can become part of a standard and be taken up by the larger modeling community.

This Special Issue is assembled from a selection of highly-rated technical papers presented at the 4th IEEE Electron Devices Technology and Manufacturing Conference 2020, EDTM 2020. It took place during April 6-21, 2020 and signified the 1st of its kind as a virtual conference financially-sponsored by the Electron Devices Society (EDS). The original EDTM 2020 was planned as a full three-day event at the Hotel Equatorial , Penang, Malaysia from March 16 to 18, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EDTM 2020 was held as a virtual event .

Software fault prediction (SFP) is a research area that helps development and testing process deliver software of good quality. Software metrics are of various types and are used in SFP for measurements. Inheritance is a prominent feature, which measures the depth, breadth, and complexity of object-oriented software. A few studies exclusively addressed the efficacy of inheritance in SFP. This provokes the need to identify the potential ingredients associated with inheritance, which can be helpful in SFP. In this paper, our aim is to collecting, organizing, categorizing, and investigating published fault prediction studies. Findings include identification of 54 inheritance metrics, 78 public datasets with various combinations of 10 inheritance metrics, 60% use of method level & use of private datasets, an increased number of studies using machine learning approaches. This study will facilitate scholars to studying previous literature on software fault prediction having software metrics, with their methods, public data sets, performance evaluation of machine learning algorithms, and findings of experimental results in a comfortable, and efficient way, emphasizing the inherited aspect specifically.
