Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is the coronavirus strain that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). The World Health Organization has designated the ongoing COVID‐19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. WHO declared COVID‐19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. During the pandemic and lockdown period, many dermatological clinics were temporarily closed in Turkey as well as all over the world. Taking the necessary precautions, the hospital continued to examine all emergent and elective patients who applied to our dermatology clinic. We investigated the most common reasons for admission of pediatric and adult patients who were admitted to our outpatient clinic between 30 March and 30 April 2020, the period with the highest number of COVID‐19 patients in Turkey. In children and adult age groups, the most common reason for admission was acne ([N: 10, 16.4%] and [N: 89, 20.9%], respectively). Of the 99 acne patients, 70 (70.7%) were using systemic isotretinoin and applied to our clinic to repeat the prescription or continue the agent. The number of pediatric patients admitted to the dermatology department drastically reduced during the lockdown period, which was attributed to the curfew for children in the country. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is a noninvasive clinical test that provides quantification for the stiffness of both the aorta and peripheral arteries by measuring the brachial and tibial arterial wave velocities. The temporal pattern of baPWV values during aging was investigated in this paper. A gradual increase in baPWV with respect to age was observed, suggesting an increase in the stiffness of arterial vessels as age increases. The ΔbaPWV value, defined as the absolute value of the difference between bilateral baPWV, also showed a positive correlation with aging. Many underlying physiological conditions such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperglycemia have previously been shown to elevate baPWV and contribute to the decline of arterial function. The effect of factors including biological sex, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels on the baPWV temporal pattern were also investigated. Between the ages of 18 and 50, men in the study had significantly higher baPWV readings than females of comparable age on average. However, after the age of 50, mean baPWV values increased at a greater rate in females than in males. In addition, blood pressure and blood glucose were shown to be associated with baPWV values. The results will improve existing prediction models for future cardiovascular episodes induced by arterial hardening in different age groups.

This paper identifies variations in the age and gender characteristics of informal carers in the UK. The paper is based on the Individual Sample of Anonymous Records, a 3% random sample of the 2001 UK Census. The sample size was 1 825 595. Of this sample, 10% were reported to be carers. The analysis shows that informal caregiving is systematically linked with both age and gender. Caregiving increased with age until reaching a peak in the 45–59 age group, in which almost 20% were carers. Similarly, the amount of time spent caregiving increased with age, with the highest levels of caregiving commitment in people aged 80–89 years. Regarding gender, 11.3% of women were carers compared to 8.6% of men and overall women committed more time to caregiving than men. However, this pattern was reversed in later life (70+), where there was a higher proportion of carers and greater time commitment to caregiving amongst men. While the predominance of women as informal carers has been well reported, the importance of men as informal carers in old age is much less commented upon. This study thus suggests that informal caregiving is most prevalent in groups of the population that, according to previous research, may experience most strain from doing so: elderly people who may be frail and often are in a spousal relationship with the care-recipient, and middle-aged women with multiple roles. Therefore, it is of great importance that their particular needs and circumstances are fully taken into account both in the development of formal support and when information about available support is targeted.

Medical studies have shown that EEG of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients is "slower" (i.e., contains more low-frequency power) and is less complex compared to age-matched healthy subjects. The relation between those two phenomena has not yet been studied, and they are often silently assumed to be independent. In this paper, it is shown that both phenomena are strongly related. Strong correlation between slowing and loss of complexity is observed in two independent EEG datasets: (1) EEG of predementia patients (a.k.a. Mild Cognitive Impairment; MCI) and control subjects; (2) EEG of mild AD patients and control subjects. The two data sets are from different patients, different hospitals and obtained through different recording systems. The paper also investigates the potential of EEG slowing and loss of EEG complexity as indicators of AD onset. In particular, relative power and complexity measures are used as features to classify the MCI and MiAD patients versus age-matched control subjects. When combined with two synchrony measures (Granger causality and stochastic event synchrony), classification rates of 83 (MCI) and 98 (MiAD) are obtained. This paper is a review of work done on colorectal cancer in Nigeria over the last 40 years showing geographic spread, age and sex ratios, predominant histopathology and paucity of polyposis coli syndromes. The male/female ratio is averagely equal, the peak age remains around 44 years, there is a significant subgroup of the under-30s and there are more rectal cancer cases than colon cancer cases. Of the colon cancer cases, the caecum seems to be the more favoured site. There seems to be quite a significant incidence of mucin-secreting adenocarcinoma subgroups which are said to carry a worse prognosis. Almost all the authors have stated the rarity of polyposis coli syndromes; a few have looked into the possibility of mismatch repair mutations as an aetiological factor.

NSE and S100B belong among the so-called structural proteins of the central nervous system (CNS). Lately, this group of structural proteins has been profusely used as specific biomarkers of CNS tissue damage. So far, the majority of the research papers have focused predominantly on the concentrations of these proteins in blood in relation to CNS damage of various origins. Considering the close anatomic and functional relationship between the brain or spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), in case of a CNS injury, a rapid and pronounced increase of the concentrations of structural proteins specifically in CSF takes place. This study inquires into the physiological concentrations of NSE and S100B proteins in CSF, carried out on a sufficiently large group of 601 patients. The detected values can be used for determination of a normal reference range in CSF in a clinical laboratory diagnostics.

In the UK, recent guidance on supportive and palliative care has acknowledged the contribution of voluntary organizations, including their role in palliative day care. Similarly, research has tended to focus exclusively on palliative day care as opposed to comparable care for people with cancer, regardless of prognosis. This paper describes a case record review study conducted at a nurse-led voluntary sector cancer day care centre. The study focused on referrals over a one-year period in terms of user demographics, referral sources/reasons and subsequent care given. It was found that 220 referrals (including 106 self-referrals) were made during the year. Of these, 70.9% were people with cancer and the remainder were carers/bereaved people. Those referred broadly reflected national statistics on age, gender and cancer diagnosis. Carers were rarely referred by professionals, few lived in inner-city neighbourhoods and some had no informal support. Non-specific referral reasons, such as 'support', tended to be translated into specific therapies, such as complementary therapies and counselling, at initial assessment. Care offered at the centre appeared to supplement and complement that provided by local statutory services. The study raised issues for practice and further research that may be relevant to those working in similar centres.

Cannabis use and suicidal behaviour are causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality worldwide. Changing trends in these behaviours in younger age groups, higher incidence, gender differences and sociocultural variations present an enormous challenge. There is no consensus whether these complex relationships are either a direct or an indirect effect due to other mental disorders, or a social response of disclosure of drug taking habits to family members and school authorities. This paper reviews the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour and cannabis use among adolescents and looks at the relationship of these behaviours regionally and internationally. The Caribbean islands have an established use of cannabis with higher suicidal rates, which provides an ideal setting to investigate the interrelationship of these disorders. Preliminary research findings in Trinidad indicate high rates of cannabis use among school students with higher rates in vocational schools compared to grammar schools. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer death in the world. The incidence rate (ASR) and age distribution of this disease differ between most of African-Middle-Eastern (AMAGE) and North America and Europe for many reasons. However, in all areas, “CRC” is considered as one of the most preventable cancers, because it might develop from variant processes like polyps and IBD in addition to the genetic pathogenesis which became very well known in this disease. We tried in this paper to review all the possible reasons of the differences in incidence and age between the west and AMAGE. Also we reviewed all the mutations that lead to the hereditary and familiar clustering of this disease with the correlations with the surrounding food and environment of different areas. Then, we focused on the precancerous pathology of this disease with special focusing on early detection depending on new endoscopy technology and most important genetic studies. We lastly reviewed the evidence of some of the surveillance and put suggestions about future surveillance programs and how important those programs are on the psychological aspect of the patients and their families.
