International audience; In a previous paper, we have described the construction of an automaton from a rational expression which has the property that the automaton built from an expression which is itself computed from a co-deterministic automaton by the state elimination method is co-deterministic. It turned out that the definition on which the construction is based was inappropriate, and thus the proof of the property was flawed. We give here the correct definition of the broken derived terms of an expression which allow to define the automaton and the detailed full proof of the property.

The spectral gap conjecture of M. van den Berg [2, formula (65)] asserts that λ2 − λ1 ≥ 3π for all convex euclidean domains of diameter 1, where λ1 and λ2 denote the first two eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Notice that equality holds for the 1-dimensional unit interval, which can be regarded also as a degenerate n-dimensional rectangular box. The gap estimate is conjectured to hold more generally for Schrodinger operators with convex potentials, under Dirichlet boundary conditions; see the work of S.-T. Yau and collaborators [9, 11]. This Schrodinger gap conjecture was proved some time ago in 1 dimension by R. Lavine [8], and more recently in all dimensions by B. Andrews and J. Clutterbuck [1]. The proof in this journal by H. Donnelly [3] of the original gap conjecture in 2 dimensions (for the Dirichlet Laplacian with zero potential) is not correct. The Editors of Mathematische Zeitschrift have asked us to describe the flaws in the proof, in order to clarify the state of the literature. Donnelly’s approach to the problem is a natural one: first perform a shape optimization to rule out a non-degenerate minimizing domain, and then analyze the spectral gap for a sequence of domains degenerating to an interval, with the help of results by D. Jerison [5]. (For some history on this approach, and on the gap conjecture more generally, see the report on the AIM meeting “Low Eigenvalues of Laplace and Schrodinger Operators” [10], especially page 12 of the open problems list.) In this short paper, we construct a unipotent nearby cycle functor and show a p-adic analogue of Beilinson’s equivalence comparing two derived categories: the derived category of holonomic arithmetic $${\mathcal {D}}$$ -modules and the derived category of arithmetic $${\mathcal {D}}$$ -modules whose cohomologies are holonomic.

International audience; This paper focuses on the location of the non-asymptotic zeros of Whittaker and Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. Based on a technique by E. Hille for the analysis of solutions of some second-order ordinary differential equations, we characterize the sign of the real part of zeros of Whittaker and Kummer functions and provide estimates on the regions of the complex plane where those zeros can be located. Our main result is a correction of a previous statement by G. E. Tsvetkov whose propagation has induced mistakes in the literature. In particular, we review some results of E. B. Saff and R. S. Varga on the error of Padé's rational approximation of the exponential function, which are based on the latter.

International audience; Recently, Iwahori-Hecke algebras were associated to Kac-Moody groups over non-Archimedean local fields. In a previous paper, we introduced principal series representations for these algebras and partially generalized Kato's irreducibility criterion. In this paper, we study how some of these representations decompose when they are reducible and deduce information on the irreducible representations of these algebras.

The paper is devoted to generic translation flows corresponding to Abelian differentials on flat surfaces of arbitrary genus $g\ge 2$. These flows are weakly mixing by the Avila-Forni theorem. In genus 2, the Hölder property for the spectral measures of these flows was established in our papers [10,12]. Recently Forni [17], motivated by [10], obtained Hölder estimates for spectral measures in the case of surfaces of arbitrary genus. Here we combine Forni's idea with the symbolic approach of [10] and prove Hölder regularity for spectral measures of flows on random Markov compacta, in particular, for translation flows in all genera., Corrects the formulation of Proposition 5.4 in the published version (reversed order of quantifiers); the results and proofs are unchanged, with a minor rewording

In this paper, we study the algebraic relations satisfied by the solutions of q-difference equations and their transforms with respect to an auxiliary operator. Our main tools are the parametrized Galois theories developed in Hardouin and Singer (Math Ann 342(2):333–377, 2008) and Ovchinnikov and Wibmer (Int Math Res Not 12:3962–4018, 2015). The first part of this paper is concerned with the case where the auxiliary operator is a derivation, whereas the second part deals with a $$\mathbf {q}$$ -difference operator. In both cases, we give criteria to guarantee the algebraic independence of a series, solution of a q-difference equation, with either its successive derivatives or its $$\mathbf {q}$$ -transforms. We apply our results to q-hypergeometric series.

This paper considers wave-based imaging through a heterogeneous (random) scattering medium. The goal is to estimate the support of the reflectivity function of a remote scene from measurements of the backscattered wave field. The proposed imaging methodology is based on the coherent interferometric (CINT) approach that exploits the local empirical cross correlations of the measurements of the wave field. The standard CINT images are known to be robust (statistically stable) with respect to the random medium, but the stability comes at the expense of a loss of resolution. This paper shows that a two-point CINT function contains the information needed to obtain statistically stable and high-resolution images. Different methods to build such images are presented, theoretically analyzed and compared with the standard imaging approaches using numerical simulations. The first method involves a phase-retrieval step to extract the reflectivity function from the modulus of its Fourier transform. The second method involves the evaluation of the leading eigenvector of the two-point CINT imaging function seen as the kernel of a linear operator. The third method uses an optimization step to extract the reflectivity function from some cross products of its Fourier transform. The presentation is for the synthetic aperture radar data acquisition setup, where a moving sensor probes the scene with signals emitted periodically and records the resulting backscattered wave. We present a solution of the algebraic version of Birkhoff Conjecture on integrable billiards. Namely we show that every polynomially integrable real bounded convex planar billiard with smooth boundary is an ellipse. We extend this result to billiards with piecewise-smooth and not necessarily convex boundary on arbitrary two-dimensional surface of constant curvature: plane, sphere, Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) plane; each of them being modeled as a plane or a (pseudo-) sphere in $\mathbb R^3$ equipped with appropriate quadratic form. Namely, we show that a billiard is polynomially integrable, if and only if its boundary is a union of confocal conical arcs and appropriate geodesic segments. We also present a complexification of these results. These are joint results of Mikhail Bialy, Andrey Mironov and the author. The proof is split into two parts. The first part is given by Bialy and Mironov in their two joint papers. They considered the tautological projection of the boundary to $\mathbb{RP}^2$ and studied its orthogonal-polar dual curve, which is piecewise algebraic, by S.V.Bolotin's theorem. By their arguments and another Bolotin's theorem, it suffices to show that each non-linear complex irreducible component of the dual curve is a conic. They have proved that all its singularities and inflection points (if any) lie in the projectivized zero locus of the corresponding quadratic form on $\mathbb C^3$. The present paper provides the second part of the proof: we show that each above irreducible component is a conic and finish the solution of the Algebraic Birkhoff Conjecture in constant curvature., To appear in the Journal of the European Mathematical Society (JEMS), 69 pages, 2 figures. Explicit stabilized integrators are an efficient alternative to implicit or semi-implicit methods to avoid the severe timestep restriction faced by standard explicit integrators applied to stiff diffusion problems. In this paper, we provide a fully discrete strong convergence analysis of a family of explicit stabilized methods coupled with finite element methods for a class of parabolic semilinear deterministic and stochastic partial differential equations. As pointed out by Alexandre Bailleul, the paper mentioned in the title contains a mistake in Theorem 2.2. The hypothesis on the linear relation of the almost periods is not sufficient. In this note, we fix the problem and its minor consequences on other results in the same paper.

International audience; In this paper, we consider nonsmooth convex optimization problems with additive structure featuring independent oracles (black-boxes) working in parallel. Existing methods for solving these distributed problems in a general form are synchronous, in the sense that they wait for the responses of all the oracles before performing a new iteration. In this paper, we propose level bundle methods handling asynchronous oracles. These methods require original upper-bounds (using upper-models or scarce coordinations) to deal with asynchronicity. We prove their convergence using variational-analysis techniques and illustrate their practical performance on a Lagrangian decomposition problem.

We prove a long exact sequence in KK-theory for both full and reduced amalgamated free products in the presence of conditional expectations. In the course of the proof, we established the KK-equivalence between the full amalgamated free product of two unital C*-algebras and a newly defined reduced amalgamated free product that is valid even for non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. In this paper we will show how to constructed an Skew-Field with trace-preserving endomorphisms of the affine plane. Earlier in my paper, we doing a detailed description of endomorphisms algebra and trace-preserving endomorphisms algebra in an affine plane, and we have constructed an associative unitary ring for which trace-preserving endomorphisms. In this paper we formulate and prove an important Lemma, which enables us to construct a particular trace-preserving endomorphism, with the help of which we can construct the inverse trace-preserving endomorphisms of every trace-preserving endomorphism. International audience; This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a numerical scheme dedicated to the simulation of front advection (see https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02940407v1 for a preprint version presenting this scheme and some numerical results). The latter has been recently proposed and it is based on the ideas used for the Glimm's scheme. It relies on a two-step approach: a convection step is followed by a projection step which is based on a random choice. The main advantage of this scheme is that it applies to multi-dimensional problems. In the present paper a convergence result for this scheme is provided for a particular class of multi-dimensional problems. This paper is devoted to the abstract study of operational second-order differential equations of elliptic type with nonregular coefficient-operator boundary conditions in a non-commutative framework. The study is performed when the second member f belongs to $$L^{p}(0,1;X)$$, with general $$p\in ]1,+\infty [$$, X being a UMD Banach space. We give some new results by using semigroups and interpolation theory. Existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity of the classical and semi-classical solution are proved. This paper improves naturally the ones studied in the commutative case by Hammou et al. (Mediterr J Math, 1669–1683, 2015).

Motivated by the number-theoretical connection between the Heisenberg group and Dirichlet series, we express the Mellin transform of the generalized stochastic area corresponding to the one-dimensional Anti de Sitter fibration as a series of Riemann Zeta function evaluated at integers. In the second part of the paper, we focus on winding processes around the origin in the Poincar\'e disc and in the complex projective line. More pricesely, we derive the fixed-time marginal density of the former process while we give a ultraspherical series expansion of the characteristic function of the latter.

International audience; In general, the group decompositions are formulated by employing automorphisms and semidirect products to determine continuity and compactification properties. This paper proposes a set of constructions of novel topological decompositions of groups and analyzes the behaviour of group actions under the topological decompositions. The proposed topological decompositions arise in two varieties, such as decomposition based on topological fibers without projections and decomposition in the presence of translated projections in topological spaces. The first variety of decomposition introduces the concepts of topological fibers, locality of group operation and the partitioned local homeomorphism resulting in formulation of transitions and symmetric surjection within the topologically decomposed groups. The reformation of kernel under decomposed homeomorphism and the stability of group action with the existence of a fixed point are analyzed. The first variety of decomposition does not require commutativity maintaining generality. The second variety of projective topological decomposition is formulated considering commutative as well as noncommutative projections in spaces. The effects of finite translations of topologically decomposed groups under projections are analyzed. Moreover, the embedding of a decomposed group in normal topological spaces is formulated in this paper. It is shown that Schoenflies homeomorphic embeddings preserve group homeomorphism in the decomposed embeddings within normal topological spaces. This paper illustrates that decomposed group embedding in normal topological spaces is separable. The applications aspects as well as parametric comparison of group decompositions based on topology, direct product and semidirect product are included in the paper.

Any germ of a complex analytic space is equipped with two natural metrics: the {\it outer metric} induced by the hermitian metric of the ambient space and the {\it inner metric}, which is the associated riemannian metric on the germ. We show that minimal surface singularities are Lipschitz normally embedded (LNE), i.e., the identity map is a bilipschitz homeomorphism between outer and inner metrics, and that they are the only rational surface singularities with this property., This paper is a major revision of the 2015 version. Amdeberhan's conjectures on the enumeration, the average size, and the largest size of $(n,n+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts have motivated many research on this topic. Recently, Straub and Nath-Sellers obtained formulas for the numbers of $(n, dn-1)$ and $(n, dn+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, respectively. Let $X_{s,t}$ be the size of a uniform random $(s,t)$-core partition with distinct parts when $s$ and $t$ are coprime to each other. Some explicit formulas for the $k$-th moments $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{2n+1,2n+3}^k]$ were given by Zaleski and Zeilberger when $k$ is small. Zaleski also studied the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$ and conjectured some polynomiality properties concerning them in arXiv:1702.05634. Motivated by the above works, we derive several polynomiality results and asymptotic formulas for the $k$-th moments of $X_{n,dn+1}$ and $X_{n,dn-1}$ in this paper, by studying the beta sets of core partitions. In particular, we show that these $k$-th moments are asymptotically some polynomials of n with degrees at most $2k$, when $d$ is given and $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, when $d=1$, we derive that the $k$-th moment $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ of $X_{n,n+1}$ is asymptotically equal to $\left(n^2/10\right)^k$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The explicit formulas for the expectations $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn+1}]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn-1}]$ are also given. In this paper, we analyze the behavior of viscous shock profiles of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a singular pressure law which encodes the effects of congestion. As the intensity of the singular pressure tends to 0, we show the convergence of these profiles towards free-congested traveling front solutions of a two-phase compressible-incompressible Navier-Stokes system and we provide a refined description of the profiles in the vicinity of the transition between the free domain and the congested domain. In the second part of the paper, we prove that the profiles are asymptotically nonlinearly stable under small perturbations with zero integral, and we quantify the size of the admissible perturbations in terms of the intensity of the singular pressure., Communications in Mathematical Sciences, International Press, In press

This work is devoted to the analysis of high frequency solutions to the equations of nonlinear elasticity in a half-space. We consider surface waves (or more precisely, Rayleigh waves) arising in the general class of isotropic hyperelastic models, which includes in particular the Saint Venant-Kirchhoff system. Work has been done by a number of authors since the 1980s on the formulation and well-posedness of a nonlinear evolution equation whose (exact) solution gives the leading term of an \emph{approximate} Rayleigh wave solution to the underlying elasticity equations. This evolution equation, which we refer to as "the amplitude equation", is an integrodifferential equation of nonlocal Burgers type. We begin by reviewing and providing some extensions of the theory of the amplitude equation. The remainder of the paper is devoted to a rigorous proof in 2D that exact, highly oscillatory, Rayleigh wave solutions $u^\eps$ to the nonlinear elasticity equations exist on a fixed time interval independent of the wavelength $\eps$, and that the approximate Rayleigh wave solution provided by the analysis of the amplitude equation is indeed close in a precise sense to $u^\eps$ on a time interval independent of $\eps$. The paper focuses mainly on the case of Rayleigh waves that are \emph{pulses}, which have profiles with continuous Fourier spectrum, but our method applies equally well to the case of wavetrains, whose Fourier spectrum is discrete.

In this paper, we present a discrete-type approximation scheme to solve continuous-time optimal stopping problems based on fully non-Markovian continuous processes adapted to the Brownian motion filtration. The approximations satisfy suitable variational inequalities which allow us to construct $\epsilon$-optimal stopping times and optimal values in full generality. Explicit rates of convergence are presented for optimal values based on reward functionals of path-dependent SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion. In this paper, we give explicit rates in the central limit theorem and in the almost sure invariance principle for general R d {\mathbb R}^d -valued cocycles that appear in the study of the left random walk on linear groups. Our method of proof lies on a suitable martingale approximation and on a careful estimation of some coupling coefficients linked with the underlying Markov structure. Concerning the martingale part, the available results in the literature are not accurate enough to give almost optimal rates either in the central limit theorem for the Wasserstein distance, or in the strong approximation. A part of this paper is devoted to circumvent this issue. We then exhibit near optimal rates both in the central limit theorem in terms of the Wasserstein distance and in the almost sure invariance principle for R d {\mathbb R}^d -valued martingales with stationary increments having moments of order p ∈ ( 2 , 3 ] p \in (2, 3] (the case of sequences of reversed martingale differences is also considered). Note also that, as an application of our results for general R d {\mathbb R}^d -valued cocycles, a special attention is paid to the Iwasawa cocycle and the Cartan projection for reductive Lie groups (like for instance G L d ( R ) {\mathrm {GL}}_d(\mathbb {R}) ).

The paper also provides rigorous derivations of the extinction and absorption cross sections for elliptical particles.; Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode pour l'étude de la dépendance des fréquences de résonances plasmoniques des nano-particules métalliques dans un régime où l'approximation quasistatique n'est plus valide. Ces travaux reposent sur l'étude du spectre d'un opérateur integral singulier ainsi que sur l'application d'une méthode perturbative.

Topological classification of even the simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds does not fit into the concept of singling out a skeleton consisting of stable and unstable manifolds of periodic orbits. The reason for this lies primarily in the possible "wild" behaviour of separatrices of saddle points. Another difference between Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms in dimension 3 from their surface analogues lies in the variety of heteroclinic intersections: a connected component of such an intersection may be not only a point as in the two-dimensional case, but also a curve, compact or non-compact. The problem of a topological classification of Morse-Smale cascades on 3-manifolds either without heteroclinic points (gradient-like cascades) or without heteroclinic curves was solved in a series of papers from 2000 to 2006 by Ch. Bonatti, V. Grines, F. Laudenbach, V. Medvedev, E. Pecou, O. Pochinka. The present paper is devoted to a complete topological classification of the set $MS(M^3)$ of orientation preserving Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms $f$ given on smooth closed orientable 3-manifolds $M^3$. A complete topological invariant for a diffeomorphism $f\in MS(M^3)$ is an equivalent class of its scheme $S_f$, which contains an information on a periodic date and a topology of embedding of two-dimensional invariant manifolds of the saddle periodic points of $f$ into the ambient manifold., Comment: 48 pages, 15 figures

In this paper, we define, a priori, a natural two-dimensional model for a time-dependent flexural shell. As expected, this model takes the form of a set of hyperbolic variational equations posed over the space of admissible linearized inextensional displacements, and a set of initial conditions. Using a classical argument, we prove that the model under consideration admits a unique strong solution. However, the latter strategy makes use of function spaces, which are not amenable for numerically approximating the solution. We thus provide an alternate formulation of the studied problem using a suitable penalty scheme, which is more suitable in the context of numerical approximations. For the sake of completeness, in the final part of the paper, we also provide an existence and uniqueness theorem for the case where the linearly elastic shell under consideration is an elliptic membrane shell.

The main subject of this paper is equilibrium problems on an unbounded conductor $\Sigma$ of the complex plane in the presence of a weakly admissible external field. An admissible external field $Q$ on $\Sigma$ satisfies, along with other mild conditions, the following growth property at infinity: $$\lim_{|x| \rightarrow \infty}(Q(x) - \log |x|) = +\infty.$$ This condition guarantees the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium measure in the presence of $Q$, and the compactness of its support. In the last 10-15 years, several papers have dealt with weakly admissible external fields, in the sense that $Q$ satisfies a weaker condition at infinity, namely, $$\exists M\in(-\infty,\infty],\quad\liminf_{|x| \rightarrow \infty}(Q(x) - \log |x|) = M.$$ Under this last assumption, there still exists a unique equilibrium measure in the external field $Q$, but the support need not be a compact subset of $\Sigma$ anymore. In most examples considered in the literature the support is indeed unbounded. Our main goal in this paper is to illustrate this topic by means of a simple class of external fields on the real axis created by a pair of attractive and repellent charges in the complex plane, and to study the dynamics of the associated equilibrium measures as the strength of the charges evolves. As one of our findings, we exhibit configurations where the support of the equilibrium measure in a weakly admissible external field is a compact subset of the real axis. To achieve our goal, we extend some results from potential theory, known for admissible external fields, to the weakly admissible case. These new results may be of independent interest. Finally, the so--called signed equilibrium measure is an important tool in our analysis. These algorithms involve both extrapolation coefficients (including Nesterov acceleration method) and proximal coefficients in a general form. They can be interpreted as the discrete time version of inertial continuous gradient systems with general damping and time scale coefficients. Based on the proper setting of these parameters, we show the fast convergence of values and the convergence of iterates. In doing so, we provide an overview of this class of algorithms. Our study complements the previous Attouch–Cabot paper (SIOPT, 2018) by introducing into the algorithm time scaling aspects, and sheds new light on the Guler seminal papers on the convergence rate of the accelerated proximal methods for convex optimization.

Many papers are devoted to study logarithmic sheaves associated to reduced divisors, in particular logarithmic bundles associated to plane curves since forty years in differential and algebraic topology or geometry. An interesting family of these curves are the so-called free ones for which the associated logarithmic sheaf is the direct sum of two line bundles. When the curve is a finite set of distinct lines (i.e. a line arrangement), Terao conjectured thirty years ago that its freeness depends only on its combinatorics. A lot of efforts were done to prove it but at this time it is only proved up to 12 lines. If one wants to find a counter example to this conjecture a new family of curves arises naturally: the nearly free curves introduced by Dimca and Sticlaru. We prove here that the logarithmic bundle associated to a nearly free curve possesses a minimal non zero section that vanishes on one single point $P$, called jumping point, and that characterizes the bundle. Then we give a precise description of the behaviour of $P$. In particular we show, based on detailed examples, that the position of $P$ relatively to its corresponding nearly free arrangement of lines may or may not be a combinatorial invariant, depending on the chosen combinatorics., 24 pages, Comments are welcome. We analyse in this paper a conservative analogue of the celebrated model of dynamical percolation introduced by H\"aggstr\"om, Peres and Steif in [HPS97]. It is simply defined as follows: start with an initial percolation configuration $\omega(t=0)$. Let this configuration evolve in time according to a simple exclusion process with symmetric kernel $K(x,y)$. We start with a general investigation (following [HPS97]) of this dynamical process $t \mapsto \omega_K(t)$ which we call $K$-exclusion dynamical percolation. We then proceed with a detailed analysis of the planar case at the critical point (both for the triangular grid and the square lattice $Z^2$) where we consider the power-law kernels $K^\alpha$ \[ K^{\alpha}(x,y) \propto \frac 1 {\|x-y\|_2^{2+\alpha}} \, . \] We prove that if $\alpha > 0$ is chosen small enough, there exist exceptional times $t$ for which an infinite cluster appears in $\omega_{K^{\alpha}}(t)$. (On the triangular grid, we prove that it holds for all $\alpha < \alpha_0 = \frac {217}{816}$.) The existence of such exceptional times for standard i.i.d. dynamical percolation (where sites evolve according to independent Poisson point processes) goes back to the work by Schramm-Steif in [SS10]. In this paper, we give a targeted review of the state of the art in the study of planar elastic beams in large deformations, also in the presence of geometric nonlinearities. The main scope of this work is to present the different methods of analysis available for describing the possible equilibrium forms and the motions of elastic beams. For the sake of completeness, we start by giving an overview of the nonlinear theories introduced for approaching this argument and then we account for the variational principles and deformation energies introduced for modelling beams undergoing large deformations and displacements. We then consider different kinds of loads treated in the literature and the corresponding induced beam deformations. We conclude by accounting for the available analysis for stability and some considerations about problems where live loads are applied, as well as by describing some relevant numerical methods of use in the applications we have in mind. The selection criterion for the reviewed papers is dictated by the need to study large deformations and the dynamics of pantographic sheets. In a recent paper by Cantrell et al. [9], two-component KPP systems with competition of Lotka–Volterra type were analyzed and their long-time behaviour largely settled. In particular, the authors established that any constant positive steady state, if unique, is necessarily globally attractive. In the present paper, we give an explicit and biologically very natural example of oscillatory three-component system. Using elementary techniques or pre-established theorems, we show that it has a unique constant positive steady state with two-dimensional unstable manifold, a stable limit cycle, a predator–prey structure near the steady state, periodic wave trains and point-to-periodic rapid travelling waves. Numerically, we also show the existence of pulsating fronts and propagating terraces.

In the context of Deep Learning training, memory needs to store activations can prevent the user to consider large models and large batch sizes. A possible solution is to rely on model parallelism to distribute the weights of the model and the activations over distributedmemory nodes. In this paper, we consider another purely sequential approach to save memory using checkpointing techniques. Checkpointing techniques have been introduced in the context of Automatic Differentiation. They consist in storing some, but not all activations during the feed-forward network training phase, and then to recompute missing values during the backward phase. Using this approach, it is possible, at the price of re-computations, to use a minimal amount of memory. The case of a single homogeneous chain i.e.the case of a network whose all stages are identical and form a chain, is well understood and optimal solutions based on dynamic programming have been proved in the Automatic Differentiation literature. The networks encountered in practice in the context of Deep Learning are much more diverse, both in terms of shape and heterogeneity. The present paper can be seen as an attempt to extend the class of graphs that can be solved optimally. Indeed, we provide an optimal algorithm, based on dynamic programming, for the case of several chains that gathers when computing the loss function. This model typically corresponds to the case of Siamese or Cross Modal Networks.; L’espace mémoire nécessaire pour l’apprentissage de réseaux profonds peut empêcher l’utilisateur de considérer de grands modèles. Dans le cadre de l’apprentissage profond, les réseaux rencontrés sont souvent plus structurés et diverses(forme, hétérogénéité).Dans ce travail nous définissons la classe des graphes de rétropropagation et nous étendons l’ensemble des grahes sur lesquels on peut calculer en temps polynomial une solution optimale (en terme de temps d’exécution) sous contraintes mémoire.En particulier, nous considérons le cas des join qui correspondent à des modèles tels que les r éseaux siamois ou cross-modaux.

We endow A^n = T^n x R^n with its usual exact symplectic structure. An integrable diffeomorphism Φ^h, i.e. the time-one map of a Hamiltonian h which depends only on the action variables, has no nonempty wandering domains. The aim of this paper is to estimate the size (measure and Gromov capacity) of wandering domains in the case of an exact symplectic perturbation of Φ^h , in the analytic or Gevrey category. Upper estimates are related to Nekhoroshev theory, lower estimates are related to examples of Arnold diffusion. This is a contribution to the "quantitative Hamiltonian perturbation theory" initiated in previous works on the optimality of long term stability estimates and diffusion times; our emphasis here is on discrete systems because this is the natural setting to study wandering domains. We first prove that the measure (or the capacity) of these wandering domains is exponentially small, with an upper bound of the form exp(-c ε^(-1/2nα)), where ε is the size of the perturbation, α is the Gevrey exponent (α is at least 1, α=1 for analytic systems) and c is some positive constant depending mildly on h. This is obtained as a consequence of an exponential stability theorem for near-integrable exact symplectic maps, in the analytic or Gevrey category, for which we give a complete proof based on the most recent improvements of Nekhoroshev theory for Hamiltonian flows, and which requires the development of specific Gevrey suspension techniques. The second part of the paper is devoted to the construction of near-integrable Gevrey systems possessing wandering domains, for which the capacity (and thus the measure) can be estimated from below. We suppose that n is at least 2, essentially because KAM theory precludes Arnold diffusion in too low a dimension. For any α>1, we produce examples with lower bounds of the form exp(-c ε^(-1/2(n-1)(α-1))). This is done by means of a "coupling" technique, involving rescaled standard maps possessing wandering discs in A and near-integrable systems possessing periodic domains of arbitrarily large periods in A^(n-1). The most difficult part of the construction consists in obtaining a perturbed pendulum-like system on A with periodic islands of arbitrarily large periods, whose areas are explicitly estimated from below. Our proof is based on a version due to Herman of the translated curve theorem.

International audience; This paper introduces tools on fibre geometry towards the framework of mechanics of microstructured continuum. The material is modelled by an appropriate bundle for which the associated connection and metric are induced from the Euclidean space by a smooth transformation represented by a fibre morphism from the bundle to Euclidean space. Furthermore, the general kinematic structure of the theory includes macroscopic and microscopic fields in a multiscaled approach, including large transformation. Defects appear in this geometrical point of view by an induced curvature, torsion and non-metricity tensor in the induced geometry. Special attention is given to transport along a finite path in order to extend the standard infinitesimal analysis of torsion and curvature to a macroscopical point of view. Both theoretical and numerical analysis may be handled without additional difficulties. Accordingly, several examples of transformation involving the distribution of material defects are exhibited and analysed.

In this paper, we establish compactness results of some class of conformally compact Einstein 4-manifolds. In the first part of the paper, we improve the earlier results obtained by Chang-Ge. In the second part of the paper, as applications, we derive some compactness results under perturbation conditions when the L^2-norm of the Weyl curvature is small. We also derive the global uniqueness of conformally compact Einstein metrics on the 4-Ball constructed in the earlier work of Graham-Lee., Comment: 28 pages

In this paper we study the geodesic flow for a particular class of Riemannian non-compact manifolds with variable pinched negative sectional curvature. For a sequence of invariant measures we are able to prove results relating the loss of mass and bounds on the measure entropies. We compute the entropy contribution of the cusps. We develop and study the corresponding thermodynamic formalism. We obtain certain regularity results for the pressure of a class of potentials. We prove that the pressure is real analytic until it undergoes a phase transition, after which it becomes constant. Our techniques are based on the one side on symbolic methods and Markov partitions and on the other on geometric techniques and approximation properties at level of groups., 34 pages, 4 figures. This paper is concerned with a complete asymptoticanalysis as $\mathfrak{E} \to 0$ of the stationary Munk equation $\partial\_x\psi-\mathfrak{E} \Delta^2 \psi=\tau$ in a domain $\Omega\subset \mathbf{R}^2$, supplemented with boundaryconditions for $\psi $ and $\partial\_n \psi$. This equation is a simplemodel for the circulation of currents in closed basins, the variables$x$ and $y$ being respectively the longitude and the latitude. A crudeanalysis shows that as $\mathfrak{E} \to 0$, the weak limit of $\psi$ satisfiesthe so-called Sverdrup transport equation inside the domain, namely$\partial\_x \psi^0=\tau$, while boundary layers appear in the vicinity ofthe boundary.These boundary layers, which are the main center of interest of thepresent paper, exhibit several types of peculiar behaviour. First, thesize of the boundary layer on the western and eastern boundary, whichhad already been computed by several authors, becomes formally verylarge as one approaches northern and southern portions of the boudary,i.e. pieces of the boundary on which the normal is vertical. Thisphenomenon is known as geostrophic degeneracy. In order to avoid suchsingular behaviour, previous studies imposed restrictive assumptionson the domain $\Omega$ and on the forcing term $\tau$. Here, we provethat a superposition of two boundary layers occurs in the vicinity ofsuch points: the classical western or eastern boundary layers, andsome northern or southern boundary layers, whose mathematicalderivation is completely new. The size of northern/southern boundarylayers is much larger than the one of western boundary layers($\mathfrak{E}^{1/4}$ vs. $\mathfrak{E}^{1/3}$). We explain in detail how the superpositiontakes place, depending on the geometry of the boundary.Moreover, when the domain $\Omega$ is not connex in the $x$ direction,$\psi^0$ is not continuous in $\Omega$, and singular layers appear inorder to correct its discontinuities. These singular layers areconcentrated in the vicinity of horizontal lines, and thereforepenetrate the interior of the domain $\Omega$. Hence we exhibit some kindof boundary layer separation. However, we emphasize that we remainable to prove a convergence theorem, so that the singular layerssomehow remain stable, in spite of the separation.Eventually, the effect of boundary layers is non-local in severalaspects. On the first hand, for algebraic reasons, the boundary layerequation is radically different on the west and east parts of theboundary. As a consequence, the Sverdrup equation is endowed with aDirichlet condition on the East boundary, and no condition on the Westboundary. Therefore western and eastern boundary layers have in factan influence on the whole domain $\Omega$, and not only near theboundary. The class A of countable groups that admit a faithful, transitive, amenable –in the sense that there is an invariant mean– action on a set has been widely investigated in the past. In this paper, we no longer require the action to be transitive, but we ask for it to preserve a locally finite metric (and still to be faithful and amenable). The groups having such actions are those that embed into a totally disconnected amenable locally compact group. Then we focus on the subclass A 1 of groups for which the actions are moreover transitive. This class is strictly contained into A and includes non-amenable groups. An important particular case of actions preserving a locally finite metric is given by actions by automorphisms of locally finite connected graphs. We take this opportunity, in our partly expository paper, to review some nice results about amenable actions in this setting.

This result is central to the homotopy theory of strict $\infty$-categories developed by the authors. The proof presented here is of a simplicial nature and uses Steiner's theory of augmented directed complexes. In a subsequent paper, we will prove the same result by purely $\infty$-categorical methods.

International audience; This paper examines the existence and impact of theoretical mathematical foundations on the teaching and learning of whole numbers in elementary school in France. It shows that the study of the New Math reform –which was eventually itself replaced in the longer term – provides some keys to understanding the influence of mathematical theories on teaching and learning. The paper studies changes related to place value, a notion that was deeply impacted by the introduction of numeration bases other than ten in 1970, and their subsequent removal in the 1980s. What the author terms ‘numeration units’ (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.) and ‘powers-of-ten written in figures’ (1, 10, 100, 1000, etc.) are key tools for describing and understanding changes. The author identifies two theories that have formed the basis for place value teaching in the 20th century, and examines some aspects of their influence. The paper also addresses epistemological issues in the relation between academic mathematics and school mathematics, and highlights the role of units in the teaching of basic arithmetic.

Recently a considerable interest has been paid on the estimation problem of the realized volatility and covolatility by using high-frequency data of financial price processes in financial econometrics. Threshold estimation is one of the useful techniques in the inference for jump-type stochastic processes from discrete observations. In this paper, we adopt the threshold estimator introduced by Mancini where only the variations under a given threshold function are taken into account. The purpose of this work is to investigate large and moderate deviations for the threshold estimator of the integrated variance-covariance vector. This paper is an extension of the previous work in Djellout et al. where the problem has been studied in absence of the jump component. We will use the approximation lemma to prove the LDP. International audience; The paper presents an analysis of acoustic wave propagation in a waveguide with random fluctuations of its sound speed profile. These random perturbations are assumed to have long-range correlation properties. In the waveguide, a monochromatic wave can be decomposed in propagating modes and evanescent modes, and the random perturbation couples all these modes. The paper presents an asymptotic analysis of the mode-coupling mechanism and uses this to characterize the transmitted wave. The paper presents the first fully rigorous characterization of wave propagation in long-range non-layered media.

International audience; The last years have seen a growing interest from mathematicians in Mahler functions. This class of functions includes the generating series of the automatic sequences. The present paper is concerned with the following problem, which is rather frequently encountered in combinatorics: a set of Mahler functions u 1 , ..., un being given, are u 1 , ..., un and their successive derivatives algebraically independent? In this paper, we give general criteria ensuring an affirmative answer to this question. We apply our main results to the generating series attached to the so-called Baum-Sweet and Rudin-Shapiro automatic sequences. In particular, we show that these series are hyperalge-braically independent, i.e., that these series and their successive derivatives are algebraically independent. Our approach relies of the parametrized difference Galois theory (in this context, the algebro-differential relations between the solutions of a given Mahler equation are reflected by a linear differential algebraic group).
