Search

Assuming for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) a Maxwellian velocity distribution in the Galaxy we provide an assessment of the sensitivity of existing Dark Matter (DM) direct detection (DD) experiments to operators up to dimension 7 of the relativistic effective field theory describing dark matter interactions with quarks and gluons . In particular we focus on a systematic approach, including an extensive set of experiments and large number of couplings, both exceeding for completeness similar analyses in the literature. The relativistic effective theory requires to fix one coupling for each quark flavor, so in principle for each different combination the bounds should be recalculated starting from direct detection experimental data. To address this problem we propose an approximate model-independent procedure that allows to directly calculate the bounds for any combination of couplings in terms of model-independent limits on the Wilson coefficients of the non-relativistic theory expressed in terms of the WIMP mass and of the neutron-to-proton coupling ratio $c^n/c^p$. We test the result of the approximate procedure against that of a full calculation, and discuss its possible pitfalls and limitations. In this letter we propose a reduction of the $H_0$ tension puzzle by means of a theory of minimally modified gravity which is dubbed VCDM. After confronting the theory with the experiments, we find that the data allow for a low-redshift transition in the expansion history of the universe at either $z\simeq 0.3 $ or $z \simeq 1.8\,$, corresponding to one of the two local minima of the total $\chi^2$. From the bestfit values the total fitness parameter is improved by $\Delta \chi^2 \simeq 12$, for the data set considered. We then infer the local Hubble expansion rate today within this theory by means of low redshift Pantheon data. The resulting local Hubble expansion rate today is $H^{\rm{loc}}_0=73.6\pm1.4$. Cosmic backreaction as an additional source of the expansion of the universe has been a debate topic since the discovery of cosmic acceleration. The major concern is whether the self interaction of small-scale nonlinear structures would source gravity on very large scales. Gregory Ryskin argued against the additional inclusion of gravitational interaction energy of astronomical objects, whose masses are mostly inferred from gravitational effects and hence should already contain all sources with long-range gravity forces. Ryskin proposed that the backreaction contribution to the energy momentum tensor is instead from the rest of the universe beyond the observable patch. Ryskin's model elegantly solves the fine-tuning problem and is in good agreement with the Hubble diagram of Type Ia supernovae. In this article we revisit Ryskin's model and show that it is {\it inconsistent} with at least one of the following statements: (i) the universe is matter-dominated at low redshift ($z\lesssim 2$); (ii) the universe is radiation-dominated at sufficiently high redshift; (iii) matter density fluctuations are tiny ($\lesssim 10^{-4}$) at the recombination epoch., 7 pages; 2 figures; submitted to Astroparticle Physics

We present $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity models of mutated hilltop inflation (MHI) for both large and small field sectors. Models with canonical kinetic terms are developed based on a shift symmetric K\"ahler potential in inflaton superfield, and with a superpotential linear in Goldstino superfield. We also construct models with non-canonical kinetic terms for MHI by generalizing the shift symmetry. We show that ultra-light scalar dark matter (fuzzy dark matter) in galaxies has a quantum mechanical typical acceleration scale about 10−10ms−2, which leads to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Baryonic matter at central parts of galaxies acts as a boundary condition for dark matter wave equation and influences stellar rotation velocities in halos. Without any modification of gravity or mechanics this model also explains the radial acceleration relation and MOND-like behavior of gravitational acceleration found in galaxies having flat rotation curves. This analysis can be extended to the Faber-Jackson relation.

Combining intervals of ekpyrotic (ultra-slow) contraction with a (non-singular) classical bounce naturally leads to a novel cyclic theory of the universe in which the Hubble parameter, energy density and temperature oscillate periodically, but the scale factor grows by an exponential factor from one cycle to the next. The resulting cosmology not only resolves the homogeneity, isotropy, flatness and monopole problems and generates a nearly scale invariant spectrum of density perturbations, but it also addresses a number of age-old cosmological issues that big bang inflationary cosmology does not. A search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) was conducted with the single-phase liquid-xenon detector XMASS through inelastic scattering in which $^{129}$Xe nuclei were excited, using an exposure ($\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$) 48 times larger than that of our previous study. The inelastic excitation sensitivity was improved by detailed evaluation of background, event classification based on scintillation timing that distinguished $\gamma$-rays and $\beta$-rays, and simultaneous fitting of the energy spectra of $\gamma$-like and $\beta$-like samples. No evidence of a WIMP signal was found. Thus, we set the upper limits of the inelastic channel cross section at 90\% confidence level, for example, $4.1\times 10^{-39} \;{\rm cm^2}$ for a $200\; {\rm GeV}/c^2$ WIMP. This result provides the most stringent limits on the SD WIMP-neutron interaction and is better by a factor of 7.7 at $200\;{\rm GeV}/c^2$ than the existing experimental limit., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

Realising de Sitter vacua in string theory is challenging. For this reason it has been conjectured that de Sitter vacua inhabit the Swampland of inconsistent low-energy effective theories coupled to gravity. Since de Sitter is an attractor for $\Lambda$CDM, the conjecture calls $\Lambda$CDM into question. Reality appears sympathetic to this idea as local measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0$ are also at odds with $\Lambda$CDM analysis of Planck data. This tension suggests that the de Sitter state is unstable, thereby implying a turning point in the Hubble parameter. We present a model relieving this tension, which predicts a turning at small positive redshift $z_*$ that is dictated by present-day matter density $\omega_m$. This feature is easily identified by homogeneous surveys covering redshifts $z \leq 0.1$. We study the dynamics of dark energy in the presence of a 2-form field coupled to a canonical scalar field $\phi$. We consider the coupling proportional to $e^{-\mu \phi/M_{\rm pl}} H_{\alpha \beta \gamma}H^{\alpha \beta \gamma}$ and the scalar potential $V(\phi) \propto e^{-\lambda \phi/M_{\rm pl}}$, where $H_{\alpha \beta \gamma}$ is the 2-form field strength, $\mu, \lambda$ are constants, and $M_{\rm pl}$ is the reduced Planck mass. We show the existence of an anisotropic matter-dominated scaling solution followed by a stable accelerated fixed point with a non-vanishing shear. Even if $\lambda \geq {\cal O}(1)$, it is possible to realize the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ close to $-1$ at low redshifts for $\mu \gg \lambda$. The existence of anisotropic hair and the oscillating behavior of $w_{\rm DE}$ are key features for distinguishing our scenario from other dark energy models like quintessence., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We introduce a class of non-supersymmetric models explaining baryogenesis a la Affleck-Dine, which use a decay of two superheavy scalar fields with close masses. These scalars acquire non-zero expectation values during inflation through linear couplings to a function of an inflaton. After the inflaton decay, the model possesses approximate U(1)-invariance, explicitly broken by a small mass splitting. This splitting leads to the baryogenesis in the early Universe. Resulting baryon asymmetry is automatically small for the scalars with the masses about the Grand Unification scale and larger. It is fully determined by the inflaton dynamics and the Lagrangian parameters, i.e., is independent of initial pre-inflationary conditions for the scalars. As a consequence, baryon perturbations are purely adiabatic. We point out a possible origin of the mass splitting: masses of scalars degenerate at some large energy scale may acquire different loop corrections due to the interaction with the inflaton. Compared to electroweak baryogenesis and conventional Affleck-Dine scenarios, our mechanism generically leads to the proton decay suppressed by the powers of the superheavy scalar masses, which makes this scenario potentially testable., Comment: 6 pages; matches published version

Cyclic universes with bouncing solutions are candidates for solving the big bang initial singularity problem. Here we seek bouncing solutions in a modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, of the type $R+f(G)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, and $f$ some function of it. In finding such a bouncing solution we resort to a technique that reduces the order of the differential equations of the $R+f(G)$ theory to second order equations. As general relativity is a theory whose equations are of second order, this order reduction technique enables one to find solutions which are perturbatively close to general relativity. XMASS-I is a single-phase liquid xenon detector whose purpose is direct detection of dark matter. To achieve the low background requirements necessary in the detector, a new model of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), R10789, with a hexagonal window was developed based on the R8778 PMT used in the XMASS prototype detector. We screened the numerous component materials for their radioactivity. During development, the largest contributions to the reduction of radioactivity came from the stem and the dynode support. The glass stem was exchanged to the Kovar alloy one and the ceramic support were changed to the quartz one. R10789 is the first model of Hamamatsu Photonics K. K. that adopted these materials for low background purposes and provided a groundbreaking step for further reductions of radioactivity in PMTs. Measurements with germanium detectors showed 1.2$\pm$0.3 mBq/PMT of $^{226}$Ra, less than 0.78 mBq/PMT of $^{228}$Ra, 9.1$\pm$2.2 mBq/PMT of $^{40}$K, and 2.8$\pm$0.2 mBq/PMT of $^{60}$Co. Particle physics models with Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking as a consequence of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking are attractive in that they solve the strong CP problem with a SUSY DFSZ-like axion, link the SUSY breaking and PQ breaking intermediate mass scales and can resolve the SUSY mu problem with a naturalness-required weak scale mu term whilst soft SUSY breaking terms inhabit the multi-TeV regime as required by LHC sparticle mass limits and the Higgs mass measurement. On the negative ledger, models based on global symmetries suffer a generic gravity spoliation problem. We present a model based on the discrete R-symmetry Z_{24}^R-- which may emerge from compactification of 10-d Lorentzian spacetime in string theory-- where the mu term and dangerous proton decay and R-parity violating operators are either suppressed or forbidden while a gravity-safe PQ symmetry emerges as an accidental approximate global symmetry leading to a solution to the strong CP problem and a weak-scale/natural value for the mu term., 14 pages including two .png figures

Recently, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration released updated results from their search for the annual modulation signal from Dark Matter (DM) scattering in the detector. Besides approximately doubling the exposure of the DAMA/LIBRA data set, the updated photomultiplier tubes of the experiment allow a lower recoil energy threshold of 1\,keV electron equivalent compared to the previous threshold of 2 keV electron equivalent. We study the compatibility of the observed modulation signal with DM scattering. Due to a conspiracy of multiple effects, the new data at low recoil energies is very powerful for testing the DM hypothesis. We find that canonical (isospin conserving) spin-independent DM-nucleon interactions are no longer a good fit to the observed modulation signal in the standard halo model. The canonical spin-independent case is disfavored by the new data, with best fit points of a DM mass of $\sim 8\,$GeV, disfavored by $5.2\,\sigma$, or a mass of $\sim 54\,$GeV, disfavored by $2.5\,\sigma$. Allowing for isospin violating spin independent interactions, we find a region with a good fit to the data with suppressed effective couplings to iodine for DM masses of $\sim 10\,$GeV. It is well-known that the first-order phase transition (PT) will yield a stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) background with a logo-like spectrum. However, we show that when such a PT happened during the primordial inflation, the GWs spectrum brought by the PT will be reddened, which thus records the unique voiceprint of inflation. In the last few years, there has been a resurgence of interest in obtaining observational bounds on the graviton mass, following the detection of gravitational waves, because of the versatility of massive graviton theories in resolving multiple problems in cosmology and fundamental physics. In this work, we apply the method proposed in Rana et al.(arXiv:1801.03309), which consists of looking for Yukawa-like fall off in the gravitational potential, to stacked galaxy cluster catalogs from three disparate surveys. These include catalogs from 2500 sq. degree SPT-SZ survey, the Planck all-sky SZ catalog, and a redMaPPer selected catalog from 10,000 sq. degree of SDSS-DR8 data. The 90\% c.l. limits which we obtained on the graviton mass using SPT, Planck and SDSS are: $m_g < 4.73 \times 10^{-30}$ eV, $3.0 \times 10^{-30}$ eV, and $1.27 \times 10^{-30}$ eV respectively; or in terms of Compton wavelength are $��_g >2.62 \times 10^{20}$ km, $4.12 \times 10^{20}$ km, $9.76 \times 10^{20}$ km. We study cosmological perturbations in a model of unified dark matter and dark energy with a sharp transition in the late-time universe. The dark sector is described by a dark fluid which evolves from an early stage at redshifts $z > z_C$ when it behaves as cold dark matter (CDM) to a late time dark energy (DE) phase ($z < z_C$) when the equation of state parameter is $w = -1 + \epsilon$, with a constant $\epsilon$ which must be in the range $0 < \epsilon < 2/3$. We show that fluctuations in the dark energy phase suffer from an exponential instability, the mode functions growing both as a function of comoving momentum $k$ and of conformal time $\eta$. In order that this exponential instability does not lead to distortions of the energy density power spectrum on scales for which we have good observational results, the redshift $z_C$ of transition between the two phases is constrained to be so close to zero that the model is unable to explain the supernova data., Comment: 17 pages; 2 figures; v2: minor changes to match the published version

Hidden photons and axion-like particles are candidates for cold dark matter if they were produced non-thermally in the early universe. We conducted a search for both of these bosons using 800 live-days of data from the XMASS detector with 327 kg of liquid xenon in the fiducial volume. No significant signal was observed, and thus we set constraints on the $\alpha' / \alpha$ parameter related to kinetic mixing of hidden photons and the coupling constant $g_{Ae}$ of axion-like particles in the mass range from 40 to 120 keV/$c^2$, resulting in $\alpha' / \alpha < 6 \times 10^{-26}$ and $g_{Ae} < 4 \times 10^{-13}$. We establish the nonlocal generalization of the Israel-Stewart model for the relativistic causal thermodynamics of the cosmic fluid, which evolves in the homogeneous isotropic Universe. Based on the second law of thermodynamics we derive the integro-differential master equation for the nonequilibrium pressure scalar and reduce it to the differential equation of the second order in time derivatives. We show that this master equation can be considered as the relativistic analog of the Burgers equation, which is known in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. We obtain the nonlinear key equation, which contains the energy density scalar only, and analyze two exact solutions of the model. We compare two competing relativistic approaches to the N-body simulation of the Universe large-scale structure. To this end, employing the corresponding alternative computer codes ("gevolution" and "screening"), we conduct a series of cosmological simulations in boxes of different sizes and calculate the power spectra of the scalar perturbation $\Phi$, the frame-dragging vector potential ${\bf B}$ and the difference between scalar modes $\chi=\Phi-\Psi$. We demonstrate that the corresponding power spectra are in very good agreement between the compared schemes. For example, the relative difference of the power spectra for $\Phi$ is 0.04% maximum. Since the perturbed Einstein equations have much simpler form in the screening approach, the simulation with this code consumes less computational time, saving almost 40% of CPU hours., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Emission of relativistic axions from transient sources, such as axion star explosions, can lead to observable signatures. We show that axion bursts from collapsing axion stars can be detectable over the wide range of axion masses $10^{-15} \, \textrm{eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-7} \, \textrm{eV}$ in laboratory experiments, such as ABRACADABRA, DMRadio and SHAFT. The detection of axion bursts could provide new insights into the fundamental axion potential, which is challenging to probe otherwise. An ensemble of bursts in the distant past would give rise to a diffuse axion background distinct from the usual cold axion DM. We derive the quantum energy-momentum tensor and the corresponding quantum equation of state for gauge field theory using the effective Lagrangian approach. The energy-momentum tensor has a term proportional to the space-time metric and provides a finite non-diverging contribution to the effective cosmological term. This allows to investigate the influence of the gauge field theory vacuum polarisation on the evolution of Friedmann cosmology, inflation and primordial gravitational waves. The Type I-IV solutions of the Friedmann equations induced by the gauge field theory vacuum polarisation provide an alternative inflationary mechanism and a possibility for late-time acceleration. The Type II solution of the Friedmann equations generates the initial exponential expansion of the universe of finite duration and the Type IV solution demonstrates late-time acceleration. The understanding of the physical processes that lead to the origin of matter in the early Universe, creating both an excess of matter over anti-matter that survived until the present and a dark matter component, is one of the most fascinating challenges in modern science. The problem cannot be addressed within our current description of fundamental physics and, therefore, it currently provides a very strong evidence of new physics. Solutions can either reside in a modification of the standard model of elementary particle physics or in a modification of the way we describe gravity, based on general relativity, or at the interface of both. We will mainly discuss the first class of solutions. Traditionally, models that separately explain either the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe or dark matter have been proposed. However, in the last years there has also been an accreted interest and intense activity on scenarios able to provide a unified picture of the origin of matter in the early universe. In this review we discuss some of the main ideas emphasising primarily those models that have more chances to be experimentally tested during next years. Moreover, after a general discussion, we will focus on extensions of the standard model that can also address neutrino masses and mixing, since this is currently the only evidence of physics beyond the standard model coming directly from particle physics and it is, therefore, reasonable they might also provide a solution to the problem of the origin of matter in the universe., Comment: 98 pages, 10 figures. We investigate the production of primordial Gravitational Waves (GWs) arising from First Order Phase Transitions (FOPTs) associated to neutrino mass generation in the context of type-I and inverse seesaw schemes. We examine both "high-scale" as well as "low-scale" variants, with either explicit or spontaneously broken lepton number symmetry $U(1)_L$ in the neutrino sector. In the latter case, a pseudo-Goldstone majoron-like boson may provide a candidate for cosmological dark matter. We find that schemes with softly-broken $U(1)_L$ and with single Higgs-doublet scalar sector lead to either no FOPTs or too weak FOPTs, precluding the detectability of GWs in present or near future measurements. Nevertheless, we found that, in the majoron-like seesaw scheme with spontaneously broken $U(1)_L$ at finite temperatures, one can have strong FOPTs and non-trivial primordial GW spectra which can fall well within the frequency and amplitude sensitivity of upcoming experiments, including LISA, BBO and u-DECIGO. However, GWs observability clashes with invisible Higgs decay constraints from the LHC. A simple and consistent fix is to assume the majoron-like mass to lie above the Higgs-decay kinematical threshold. We also found that the majoron-like variant of the low-scale seesaw mechanism implies a different GW spectrum than the one expected in the high-scale seesaw. This feature will be testable in future experiments. We calculate the gravitational radiation background generated from boson star binaries formed in locally dense clusters with formation rate tracked by the regular star formation rate. We compute how the the frequency window in gravitational waves is affected by the boson field mass and repulsive self-coupling, anticipating constraints from EPTA and LISA. We examine the emergence of the infrared logarithms in the cosmological perturbation theory applied to the minisuperspace scalar slow-roll inflation. Not surprisingly, in the single scalar field model the curvature perturbation $\zeta$ is conserved and no $\ln a_B$ behavior appears, where $a_B(t)$ is the background scale factor of the universe. On the other hand, in the presence of a spectator scalar the $n$'th order perturbation theory gives an $(\ln a_B)^n$ correction to $\zeta$. Recent gravitational wave observations of binary black hole mergers and a binary neutron star merger by LIGO and Virgo Collaborations associated with its optical counterpart constrain deviation from General Relativity (GR) both on strong-field regime and cosmological scales with high accuracy, and further strong constraints are expected by near-future observations. Thus, it is important to identify theories of modified gravity that intrinsically possess the same solutions as in GR among a huge number of theories. We clarify the three conditions for theories of modified gravity to allow GR solutions, i.e., solutions with the metric satisfying the Einstein equations in GR and the constant profile of the scalar fields. Our analysis is quite general, as it applies a wide class of single-/multi-field scalar-tensor theories of modified gravity in the presence of matter component, and any spacetime geometry including cosmological background as well as spacetime around black hole and neutron star, for the latter of which these conditions provide a necessary condition for no-hair theorem. The three conditions will be useful for further constraints on modified gravity theories as they classify general theories of modified gravity into three classes, each of which possesses i) unique GR solutions (i.e., no-hair cases), ii) only hairy solutions (except the cases that GR solutions are realized by cancellation between singular coupling functions in the Euler-Lagrange equations), and iii) both GR and hairy solutions, for the last of which one of the two solutions may be selected dynamically., 9 pages; version to appear in Phys.Lett. Observations reveal that the Universe has a hierarchy of galaxy clustering with transition to homogeneity on large scales according to the $\Lambda$CDM model. On the other hand some observational estimates suggest a multifractal behavior where galactic clustering is based on generalization of the correlation dimension. We study the influence of veto areas on fractal measurements in masks of galaxy surveys. We investigate if these holes can produce fractal behaviors or modify the scale of cosmic homogeneity. The $1/M$ power corrections, where $M\gg m_W$ is the WIMP mass, distinguish between different underlying UV models with the same universal limit and their impact on direct detection rates can be enhanced relative to naive expectations due to generic amplitude-level cancellations at leading order. The necessary one- and two-loop matching calculations onto the low-energy effective theory for WIMP interactions with Standard Model quarks and gluons are performed for the case of an electroweak SU(2) triplet WIMP, considering both the cases of elementary fermions and composite scalars. The low-velocity WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section is evaluated and compared with current experimental limits and projected future sensitivities. Our results provide the most robust prediction for electroweak triplet Majorana fermion dark matter direct detection rates; for this case, a cancellation between two sources of power corrections yields a small total $1/M$ correction, and a total cross section close to the universal limit for $M \gtrsim {\rm few} \times 100\,{\rm GeV}$. For the SU(2) composite scalar, the $1/M$ corrections introduce dependence on underlying strong dynamics. Using a leading chiral logarithm evaluation, the total $1/M$ correction has a larger magnitude and uncertainty than in the fermionic case, with a sign that further suppresses the total cross section. To understand the formation and evolution of galaxies at redshifts z < 10, one must invariably introduce specific models (e.g., for the star formation) in order to fully interpret the data. Unfortunately, this tends to render the analysis compliant to the theory and its assumptions, so consensus is still somewhat elusive. Nonetheless, the surprisingly early appearance of massive galaxies challenges the standard model, and the halo mass function estimated from galaxy surveys at z > 4 appears to be inconsistent with the predictions of LCDM, giving rise to what has been termed "The Impossibly Early Galaxy Problem" by some workers in the field. A simple resolution to this question may not be forthcoming. The situation with the halos themselves, however, is more straightforward and, in this paper, we use linear perturbation theory to derive the halo mass function over the redshift range z < 10 for the R_h=ct universe. We use this predicted halo distribution to demonstrate that both its dependence on mass and its very weak dependence on redshift are compatible with the data. The difficulties with LCDM may eventually be overcome with refinements to the underlying theory of star formation and galaxy evolution within the halos. For now, however, we demonstrate that the unexpected early formation of structure may also simply be due to an incorrect choice of the cosmology, rather than to yet unknown astrophysical issues associated with the condensation of mass fluctuations and subsequent galaxy formation., 23 pages, 2 figures. In this paper, we propose a new method to obtain the depletion factor $\gamma(z)$, the ratio by which the measured baryon fraction in galaxy clusters is depleted with respect to the universal mean. We use exclusively galaxy cluster data, namely, X-ray gas mass fraction ($f_{gas}$) and angular diameter distance measurements from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect plus X-ray observations. The galaxy clusters are the same in both data set and the non-isothermal spherical double $\beta$-model was used to describe their electron density and temperature profiles. In order to compare our results with those from recent cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, we suppose a possible time evolution for $\gamma(z)$, such as, $\gamma(z) = \gamma_0(1 + \gamma_1z)$. As main conclusions we found that: the $\gamma_0$ value is in full agreement with the simulations. { On the other hand, although the $\gamma_1$ value found in our analysis is compatible with $\gamma_1=0$ within 2$\sigma$ c.l., our results show a non-negligible time evolution for the depletion factor, unlike the results of the simulations. However, we also put constraints on $\gamma (z)$ by using the $f_{gas}$ measurements and angular diameter distances obtained from the flat $\Lambda$CDM model (Planck results) and from a sample of galaxy clusters described by a elliptical profile. For these cases no significant time evolution for $\gamma(z)$ was found. Every GRB model where the progenitor is assumed to be a highly relativistic hadronic jet whose pions, muons and electron pair secondaries are feeding the gamma jets engine, necessarily (except for very fine-tuned cases) leads to a high average neutrino over photon radiant exposure (radiance), a ratio well above unity, though the present observed average IceCube neutrino radiance is at most comparable to the gamma in the GRB one. Therefore no hadronic GRB, fireball or hadronic thin precessing jet, escaping exploding star in tunneled or penetrarting beam, can fit the actual observations. A new model is shown here, based on a purely electronic progenitor jet, fed by neutrons (and relics) stripped from a neutron star (NS) by tidal forces of a black hole or NS companion, showering into a gamma jet. Such thin precessing spinning jets explain unsolved puzzles such as the existence of the X-ray precursor in many GRBs. The present pure electron jet model, disentangling gamma and (absent) neutrinos, explains naturally why there is no gamma GRB correlates with any simultaneous TeV IceCube astrophysical neutrinos. Rare unstable NS companion stages while feeding the jet may lead to an explosion simulating a SN event. We combine new analysis of the stochastic gravitational wave background to be expected from cosmic strings with the latest pulsar timing array (PTA) limits to give an upper bound on the energy scale of the possible cosmic string network, $G\mu < 1.5\times 10^{-11}$ at the 95% confidence level. We also show bounds from LIGO and to be expected from LISA and BBO. Current estimates for the gravitational wave background from supermassive black hole binaries are at the level where a PTA detection is expected. But if PTAs do observe a background soon, it will be difficult in the short term to distinguish black holes from cosmic strings as the source, because the spectral indices from the two sources happen to be quite similar. If PTAs do not observe a background, then the limits on $G\mu$ will improve somewhat, but a string network with $G\mu$ substantially below $10^{-11}$ will produce gravitational waves primarily at frequencies too high for PTA observation, so significant further progress will depend on intermediate-frequency observatories such as LISA, DECIGO and BBO., Comment: 9 pages, updated link to companion paper

The $f(R)$ gravity can be cast into the form of a scalar-tensor theory, and scalar degree of freedom can be suppressed in high-density regions by the chameleon mechanism. In this article, for the general $f(R)$ gravity, using a scalar-tensor representation with the chameleon mechanism, we calculate the parameterized post-Newtonian parameters $\gamma$ and $\beta$, the effective gravitational constant $G_{\rm eff}$, and the effective cosmological constant $\Lambda_{\rm eff}$. In addition, for the general $f(R)$ gravity, we also calculate the rate of orbital period decay of the binary system due to gravitational radiation. This review presents a comprehensive overview of galaxy bias, that is, the statistical relation between the distribution of galaxies and matter. We focus on large scales where cosmic density fields are quasi-linear. On these scales, the clustering of galaxies can be described by a perturbative bias expansion, and the complicated physics of galaxy formation is absorbed by a finite set of coefficients of the expansion, called bias parameters. The review begins with a detailed derivation of this very important result, which forms the basis of the rigorous perturbative description of galaxy clustering, under the assumptions of General Relativity and Gaussian, adiabatic initial conditions. Key components of the bias expansion are all leading local gravitational observables, which include the matter density but also tidal fields and their time derivatives. We hence expand the definition of local bias to encompass all these contributions. This derivation is followed by a presentation of the peak-background split in its general form, which elucidates the physical meaning of the bias parameters, and a detailed description of the connection between bias parameters and galaxy statistics. We then review the excursion-set formalism and peak theory which provide predictions for the values of the bias parameters. In the remainder of the review, we consider the generalizations of galaxy bias required in the presence of various types of cosmological physics that go beyond pressureless matter with adiabatic, Gaussian initial conditions: primordial non-Gaussianity, massive neutrinos, baryon-CDM isocurvature perturbations, dark energy, and modified gravity. We revisit the relation between the neutrino masses and the spontaneous breaking of the B-L gauge symmetry. We discuss the main scenarios for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and point out two simple mechanisms for neutrino masses. In this context the neutrino masses can be generated either at tree level or at quantum level and one predicts the existence of very light sterile neutrinos with masses below the eV scale. The predictions for lepton number violating processes such as mu to e and mu to e gamma are discussed in detail. We review theories of dark matter (DM) beyond the collisionless paradigm, known as self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), and their observable implications for astrophysical structure in the Universe. Self-interactions are motivated, in part, due to the potential to explain long-standing (and more recent) small scale structure observations that are in tension with collisionless cold DM (CDM) predictions. Simple particle physics models for SIDM can provide a universal explanation for these observations across a wide range of mass scales spanning dwarf galaxies, low and high surface brightness spiral galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. At the same time, SIDM leaves intact the success of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology on large scales. This report covers the following topics: (1) small scale structure issues, including the core-cusp problem, the diversity problem for rotation curves, the missing satellites problem, and the too-big-to-fail problem, as well as recent progress in hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation; (2) N-body simulations for SIDM, including implications for density profiles, halo shapes, substructure, and the interplay between baryons and self-interactions; (3) semi-analytic Jeans-based methods that provide a complementary approach for connecting particle models with observations; (4) merging systems, such as cluster mergers (e.g., the Bullet Cluster) and minor infalls, along with recent simulation results for mergers; (5) particle physics models, including light mediator models and composite DM models; and (6) complementary probes for SIDM, including indirect and direct detection experiments, particle collider searches, and cosmological observations. New Experiments With Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) is a direct dark matter detection experiment using Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) with light noble gases to search for low-mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). We report the results from the first physics run taken at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) with SEDINE, a 60 cm diameter prototype SPC operated with a mixture of $\mathrm{Ne}+\mathrm{CH}_{4}$ (0.7 %) at 3.1 bars for a total exposure of $9.7\;\mathrm{kg\cdot days}$. New constraints are set on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section in the sub-$\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ mass region. We exclude cross-sections above $4.4 \times \mathrm{10^{-37}\;cm^2}$ at 90 % confidence level (C.L.) for a 0.5 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ WIMP. Real time evolution of classical gauge fields is relevant for a number of applications in particle physics and cosmology, ranging from the early Universe to dynamics of quark-gluon plasma. We present a lattice formulation of the interaction between a $shift$-symmetric field and some $U(1)$ gauge sector, $a(x)\tilde{F}_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$, reproducing the continuum limit to order $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ and obeying the following properties: (i) the system is gauge invariant and (ii) shift symmetry is exact on the lattice. For this end we construct a definition of the {\it topological number density} $Q = \tilde{F}_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$ that admits a lattice total derivative representation $Q = \Delta_\mu^+ K^\mu$, reproducing to order $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ the continuum expression $Q = \partial_\mu K^\mu \propto \vec E \cdot \vec B$. If we consider a homogeneous field $a(x) = a(t)$, the system can be mapped into an Abelian gauge theory with Hamiltonian containing a Chern-Simons term for the gauge fields. This allow us to study in an accompanying paper the real time dynamics of fermion number non-conservation (or chirality breaking) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. When $a(x) = a(\vec x,t)$ is inhomogeneous, the set of lattice equations of motion do not admit however a simple explicit local solution (while preserving an $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ accuracy). The generalized Chaplygin gas cosmology provides a prime example for the class of unified dark matter models, which substitute the two dark components of the standard cosmological ΛCDM concordance model by a single dark component. The equation of state of the generalized Chaplygin gas is characterised by a parameter α such that the standard ΛCDM model is recovered in the case α = 0 with respect to the background dynamics and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) statistics. This allows to investigate the concordance of different cosmological data sets with respect to α. We compare the supernova data of the Supernova Cosmology Project, the data of the baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey (BOSS) of the third Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS-III) and the CMB data of the Planck 2015 data release. The importance of the BOSS Lyman α forest BAO measurements is investigated. It is found that these data sets possess a common overlap of the confidence domains only for Chaplygin gas cosmologies very close to the ΛCDM model.

Hubble tension and the search for preferred direction are two crucial unresolved issues in modern cosmology. Different measurements of the Hubble constant provide significantly different values, and this is known as the Hubble tension. The cosmological principle assumes that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic; however, deviations from the isotropy have often been observed. We apply the Bayesian tools and the Extreme Value theory dependent statistic to address the above issues. These techniques have been applied to the Panstarrs1 type Ia supernovae data. Our analysis for Hubble constant does not reject the Hubble tension. However, our value is smaller than that of the SHoES program and agrees with the CCHP value. Extreme value theory-based analysis indicates that the data does not show direction dependence. As a byproduct of our technique, we show that the errors in the data are non-Gaussian in nature., 10 pages, 5 figures

Dark sector, constituting about 95 percent of the Universe, remains the subject of numerous studies. There are lots of models dealing with the cause of the effects assigned to dark matter and dark energy. This brief review is devoted to the very recent theoretical advances in these areas: only to the advances achieved in the last few years. For example, in section devoted to particle dark matter we overview recent publications on sterile neutrinos, self-interacting dark matter, dibarions, dark matter from primordial bubbles, primordial black holes as dark matter, axions escaping from neutron stars, and dark and usual matter interacting via the fifth dimension. We also overview the second flavor of hydrogen atoms: their existence was proven by analyzing atomic experiments and is also evidenced by the latest astrophysical observations of the 21 cm spectral line from the early Universe. While discussing non-particle models of the cause of dark matter effects, we refer to modified Newtonian dynamics and modifications of the strong equivalence principles. We also consider exotic compact objects, primordial black holes, and retardation effects. Finally, we review recent studies on the cause of dark energy effects. Specifically, we cover two disputes that arose in 2019 and 2020 on whether the observations of supernovas, previously interpreted as the proof of the existence of dark energy, could have alternative explanations. Besides, we note a study of 2021, where dark energy is substituted by a new hypothetical type of dark matter having a magnetic-type interaction. We also refer to the recent model of a system of nonrelativistic neutral gravitating particles providing an alternative explanation of the entire dynamics of the Universe expansion. without introducing dark energy or new gravitational degrees of freedom.

In this paper, we study the polarization of a gravitational wave (GW) emitted by an astrophysical source at a cosmic distance propagating through the Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walk universe. By considering the null geodesic deviations, we first provide a definition of the polarization of the GW in terms of the Weyl scalars with respect to a parallelly-transported frame along the null geodesics, and then show explicitly that, due to different effects of the expansion of the universe on the two polarization modes, the so-called "+" and "$\times$" modes, the polarization angle of the GW changes generically, when it is propagating through the curved background. By direct computations of the polarization angle, we show that different epochs, radiation-, matter- and $\Lambda$-dominated, have different effects on the polarization. In particular, for a GW emitted by a binary system, we find explicitly the relation between the change of the polarization angle $|\Delta \varphi|$ and the redshift $z_s$ of the source in different epochs. In the $\Lambda$CDM model, we find that the order of $|\Delta \varphi|{\eta_0 F}$ is typically $O(10^{-3})$ to $O(10^3)$, depending on the values of $z_s$, where $\eta_0$ is the (comoving) time of the current universe, and $F\equiv\Big(\frac{5}{256}\frac{1}{\tau_{obs}}\Big)^{3/8}\left(G_NM_c\right)^{-5/8}$ with $\tau_{obs}$ and $M_c$ being, respectively, the time to coalescence in the observer's frame and the chirp mass of the binary system., Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures,improvements to presentation, references added, and new content added in appendix to comment about gauge invariance, published version in Nuclear Physics B

We analyze observational signatures arising from an epoch in cosmology corresponding to the simple harmonic universe, which consists of positive curvature, a negative cosmological constant, and one or more exotic matter sources with $-1 < w = p/\rho \leq -1/3$, which may then evolve or tunnel into an inflating and hot Big Bang phase. Particular relics specific to this class of models include spatial curvature with $\Omega_k < 0$, modifications to the dark energy sector due to the presence of residual exotic matter, and the possibility that the cosmological constant may ultimately be negative. We review the constraints on the relevant parameters from Planck and other cosmological data sets, focusing on the roles of exotic matter and curvature, and we find that while sources with $w \approx -1$ tend to tighten the constraints on $\Omega_k$, matter with $w = -1/3$ can decouple curvature from the expansion history. We propose that neutrino masses are "seeded" by a dark sector within the inverse seesaw mechanism. This way we have a new, "hidden", variant of the scotogenic scenario for radiative neutrino masses. We study matter-wave interferometry in the presence of a stochastic background of gravitational waves. It is shown that if the background has a scale-invariant spectrum over a wide bandwidth (which is expected in a class of inflationary models of Big Bang cosmology), then separated-path interference cannot be observed for a lump of matter of size above a limit which is very insensitive to the strength and bandwidth of the fluctuations, unless the interferometer is servo-controlled or otherwise protected. For ordinary solid matter this limit is of order 1--10 mm. A servo-controlled or cross-correlated device would also exhibit limits to the observation of macroscopic interference, which we estimate for ordinary matter moving at speeds small compared to c., Comment: 8 pages; 3 figures

New classes of modified teleparallel theories of gravity are introduced. The action of this theory is constructed to be a function of the irreducible parts of torsion $f(T_{\rm ax},T_{\rm ten},T_{\rm vec})$, where $T_{\rm ax},T_{\rm ten}$ and $T_{\rm vec}$ are squares of the axial, tensor and vector components of torsion, respectively. This is the most general (well-motivated) second order teleparallel theory of gravity that can be constructed from the torsion tensor. Different particular second order theories can be recovered from this theory such as new general relativity, conformal teleparallel gravity or $f(T)$ gravity. Additionally, the boundary term $B$ which connects the Ricci scalar with the torsion scalar via $R=-T+B$ can also be incorporated into the action. Primordial black holes (PBH) have been shown to arise from high peaks in the matter power spectra of multi-field models of inflation. Here we show, with a simple toy model, that it is also possible to generate a peak in the curvature power spectrum of single-field inflation. We assume that the effective dynamics of the inflaton field presents a near-inflection point which slows down the field right before the end of inflation and gives rise to a prominent spike in the fluctuation power spectrum at scales much smaller than those probed by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS) observations. This peak will give rise, upon reentry during the radiation era, to PBH via gravitational collapse. The mass and abundance of these PBH is such that they could constitute the totality of the Dark Matter today. We satisfy all CMB and LSS constraints and predict a very broad range of PBH masses. Some of these PBH are light enough that they will evaporate before structure formation, leaving behind a large curvature fluctuation on small scales.
