One of the simplest examples of a robust heteroclinic cycle involves three saddle equilibria: each one is unstable to the next in turn, and connections from one to the next occur within invariant subspaces. Such a situation can be described by a third-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), and typical trajectories approach each equilibrium point in turn, spending progressively longer to cycle around the three points but never stopping. This cycle has been invoked as a model of cyclic competition between populations adopting three strategies, characterised as Rock, Paper and Scissors. When spatial distribution and mobility of the populations is taken into account, waves of Rock can invade regions of Scissors, only to be invaded by Paper in turn. The dynamics is described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) that has travelling wave (in one dimension) and spiral (in two dimensions) solutions. In this paper, we explore how the robust heteroclinic cycle in the ODE manifests itself in the PDEs. Taking the wavespeed as a parameter, and moving into a travelling frame, the PDEs reduce to a sixth-order set of ODEs, in which travelling waves are created in a Hopf bifurcation and are destroyed in three different heteroclinic bifurcations, depending on parameters, as the travelling wave approaches the heteroclinic cycle. We explore the three different heteroclinic bifurcations, none of which have been observed in the context of robust heteroclinic cycles previously. These results are an important step towards a full understanding of the spiral patterns found in two dimensions, with possible application to travelling waves and spirals in other population dynamics models., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures

In this paper, we consider precoder designs for multiuser multiple-input-single-output (MISO) broadcasting channels. Instead of using a traditional linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoder, we propose a generalized ZF (GZF) precoder in conjunction with successive dirty-paper coding (DPC) for data-transmissions, namely, the GZF-DP precoder, where the suffix \lq{}DP\rq{} stands for \lq{}dirty-paper\rq{}. The GZF-DP precoder is designed to generate a band-shaped and lower-triangular effective channel $\vec{F}$ such that only the entries along the main diagonal and the $\nu$ first lower-diagonals can take non-zero values. Utilizing the successive DPC, the known non-causal inter-user interferences from the other (up to) $\nu$ users are canceled through successive encoding. We analyze optimal GZF-DP precoder designs both for sum-rate and minimum user-rate maximizations. Utilizing Lagrange multipliers, the optimal precoders for both cases are solved in closed-forms in relation to optimal power allocations. For the sum-rate maximization, the optimal power allocation can be found through water-filling, but with modified water-levels depending on the parameter $\nu$. While for the minimum user-rate maximization that measures the quality of the service (QoS), the optimal power allocation is directly solved in closed-form which also depends on $\nu$. Moreover, we propose two low-complexity user-ordering algorithms for the GZF-DP precoder designs for both maximizations, respectively. The successes of this approach have motivated a line of research into incorporating other symmetries into deep learning methods, in the form of group equivariant convolutional neural networks. Much of this work has been focused on roto-translational symmetry of R d , but other examples are the scaling symmetry of R d and rotational symmetry of the sphere. In this work, we demonstrate that group equivariant convolutional operations can naturally be incorporated into learned reconstruction methods for inverse problems that are motivated by the variational regularisation approach. Indeed, if the regularisation functional is invariant under a group symmetry, the corresponding proximal operator will satisfy an equivariance property with respect to the same group symmetry. As a result of this observation, we design learned iterative methods in which the proximal operators are modelled as group equivariant convolutional neural networks. We use roto-translationally equivariant operations in the proposed methodology and apply it to the problems of low-dose computerised tomography reconstruction and subsampled magnetic resonance imaging reconstruction. The proposed methodology is demonstrated to improve the reconstruction quality of a learned reconstruction method with a little extra computational cost at training time but without any extra cost at test time.

Using various techniques from dynamical systems theory, we rigorously study an experimentally validated model by [Barkley et al 2015 Nature 526 550–3], which describes the rise of turbulent pipe flow via a PDE system of reduced complexity. The fast evolution of turbulence is governed by reaction-diffusion dynamics coupled to the centerline velocity, which evolves with advection of Burgers’ type and a slow relaminarization term. Applying to this model a spatial dynamics ansatz and geometric singular perturbation theory, we prove the existence of a heteroclinic loop between a turbulent and a laminar steady state and establish a cascade of bifurcations of various traveling waves mediating the transition to turbulence. The most complicated behaviour can be found in an intermediate Reynolds number regime, where the traveling waves exhibit arbitrarily long periodic-like dynamics indicating the onset of chaos. Our analysis provides a systematic mathematical approach to identifying the transition to spatio–temporal turbulent structures that may also be applicable to other models arising in fluid dynamics.

Funder: John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; doi: https://doi.org/10.13039/100005851, In this work we study the global solvability of the primitive equations for the atmosphere coupled to moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds, where water is present in the form of water vapor and in the liquid state as cloud water and rain water. This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of auto conversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in [17] and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler [16] and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz [12]. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In [14] we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi [6], who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

The purpose of this short paper is to show the invalidity of a Fourier series expansion of fractional order as derived by G. Jumarie in a series of papers. In his work the exponential functions einωx are replaced by the Mittag-Leffler functions Eα (i(nωx)α) , over the interval [0,Mα/ω] where 0 < ω < ∞ and Mα > 0 is the period of the function Eα (ixα) , i.e., Eα (ixα) = Eα (i(x +Mα)α) . He showed that any smooth periodic function f with period Mα/ω can be expanded in a Fourier-type series. We will show that the only possible period of the function Eα (ixα) is Mα = 0; hence the invalidity of any Fourier-type series expansion of f.

We investigate the techniques and ideas used in the convergence analysis of two proximal ADMM algorithms for solving convex optimization problems involving compositions with linear operators. Besides this, we formulate a variant of the ADMM algorithm that is able to handle convex optimization problems involving an additional smooth function in its objective, and which is evaluated through its gradient. Moreover, in each iteration we allow the use of variable metrics, while the investigations are carried out in the setting of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This short paper concerns a diffusive logistic equation with the heterogeneous environment and a free boundary, which is formulated to study the spread of an invasive species, where the free boundary represents the expanding front. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is derived, namely the species either successfully spreads to the right-half-space as time $t\to\infty$ and survives (persists) in the new environment, or it fails to establish and will extinct in the long run. The sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing is also obtained. When spreading happens, we estimate the asymptotic spreading speed of the free boundary., Comment: 13

In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result B\"ohm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. This paper presents a new approach to computation of geometric continuity for parametric bi-cubic patches, based on a simple mathematical reformulation which leads to simple additional conditions to be applied in the patching computation. The paper presents an Hermite formulation of a bicubic parametric patch, but reformulations can be made also for B\'ezier and B-Spline patches as well. The presented approach is convenient for the cases when valencies of corners are different from the value 4, in general.

We consider 2- or 3-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations defined on a bounded domain $\Omega$, with no-slip boundary conditions and subject to an external force, assumed to cause instability. We then seek to uniformly stabilize such N-S system, in the vicinity of an unstable equilibrium solution, in critical $L^q$-based Sobolev and Besov spaces, by finite dimensional feedback controls. These spaces are `close' to $L^3(\Omega)$ for $d=3$. This functional setting is significant. In fact, in the case of the uncontrolled N-S dynamics, extensive research efforts have recently lead to the space $L^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ as being a critical space for the issue of well-posedness in the full space. Thus, our present work manages to solve the stated uniform stabilization problem for the controlled N-S dynamics in a correspondingly related function space setting. In this paper, the feedback controls are localized on an arbitrarily small open interior subdomain $\omega$ of $\Omega$. In addition to providing a solution of the uniform stabilization problem in such critical function space setting, this paper manages also to much improve and simplify, at both the conceptual and computational level, the solution given in the more restrictive Hilbert space setting in the literature. Moreover, such treatment sets the foundation for the authors' final goal in a subsequent paper. In 1981, Foias, Guillop\'e and Temam proved a priori estimates for arbitrary-order space derivatives of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. Such bounds are instructive in the numerical investigation of intermittency often observed in simulations, e.g., numerical study of vorticity moments by Donzis et al. (2013) revealed depletion of nonlinearity that may be responsible for smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. We employ an original method to derive analogous estimates for space derivatives of three-dimensional space-periodic weak solutions to the evolutionary equations of diffusive magnetohydrodynamics. Construction relies on space analyticity of the solutions at almost all times. An auxiliary problem is introduced, and a Sobolev norm of its solutions bounds from below the size in $C^3$ of the region of space analyticity of the solutions to the original problem. We recover the exponents obtained earlier for the hydrodynamic problem. The same approach is also followed here to derive and prove similar a priori bounds for arbitrary-order space derivatives of the first-order time derivative of the weak MHD solutions. In a celebrated paper of 1893, Hadamard established the maximal determinant theorem, which establishes an upper bound on the determinant of a matrix with complex entries of norm at most $1$. His paper concludes with the suggestion that mathematicians study the maximum value of the determinant of an $n \times n$ matrix with entries in $\{ \pm 1\}$. This is the Hadamard maximal determinant problem. This survey provides complete proofs of the major results obtained thus far. We focus equally on upper bounds for the determinant (achieved largely via the study of the Gram matrices), and constructive lower bounds (achieved largely via quadratic residues in finite fields and concepts from design theory). To provide an impression of the historical development of the subject, we have attempted to modernise many of the original proofs, while maintaining the underlying ideas. Thus some of the proofs have the flavour of determinant theory, and some appear in print in English for the first time. We survey constructions of matrices in order $n \equiv 3 \mod 4$, giving asymptotic analysis which has not previously appeared in the literature. We prove that there exists an infinite family of matrices achieving at least $0.48$ of the maximal determinant bound. In the celebrated paper by Jean Leray, published in JMPA journal in 1933, the invading domains method was proposed to construct D-solutions for the stationary Navier-Stokes flow around obstacle problem. In two dimensions, whether Leray's D-solution achieves the prescribed limiting velocity at spatial infinity became a major open problem since then. In this paper, we solve this problem at small Reynolds numbers. The proof builds on a novel blow-down argument which rescales the invading domains to the unit disc, and the ideas developed in a recent paper [Korobkov-Pileckas-Russo2020], where the nontriviality of Leray solutions in the general case was proved, and [Korobkov-Ren-2021], where the uniqueness result for small Reynolds number was established.

This paper deals with the polynomial linear system solving with errors (PLSwE) problem. Specifically, we focus on the evaluation-interpolation technique for solving polynomial linear systems and we assume that errors can occur in the evaluation step. In this framework, the number of evaluations needed to recover the solution of the linear system is crucial since it affects the number of computations. It depends on the parameters of the linear system (degrees, size) and on a bound on the number of errors. Our work is part of a series of papers about PLSwE aiming to reduce this number of evaluations. We proved in [Guerrini et al., Proc. ISIT'19] that if errors are randomly distributed, the bound of the number of evaluations can be lowered for large error rate. In this paper, following the approach of [Kaltofen et al., Proc. ISSAC'17], we improve the results of [Guerrini et al., Proc. ISIT'19] in two directions. First, we propose a new bound of the number of evaluations, lowering the dependency on the parameters of the linear system, based on work of [Cabay, Proc. SYMSAC'71]. Second, we introduce an early termination strategy in order to handle the unnecessary increase of the number of evaluations due to overestimation of the parameters of the system and on the bound on the number of errors.

The Istanbul options were first introduced by Michel Jacques in 1997. These derivatives are considered as an extension of the Asian options. In this paper, we propose an analytical approximation formula for a geometric Istanbul call option (GIC) under the Black-Scholes model. Our approximate pricing formula is obtained in closed-form using a second-order Taylor expansion. We compare our theoretical results with those of Monte-Carlo simulations using the control variates method. The paper treats pseudodifferential operators $P=Op(p(\xi ))$ with homogeneous complex symbol $p(\xi )$ of order $2a>0$, generalizing the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta )^a$ but lacking its symmetries, and taken to act on the halfspace $R^n_+$. The operators are seen to satisfy a principal $\mu $-transmission condition relative to $R^n_+$, but generally not the full $\mu $-transmission condition satisfied by $(-\Delta )^a$ and related operators (with $\mu =a$). However, $P$ acts well on the so-called $\mu $-transmission spaces over $R^n_+$ (defined in earlier works), and when $P$ moreover is strongly elliptic, these spaces are the solution spaces for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for $P$, leading to regularity results with a factor $x_n^\mu $ (in a limited range of Sobolev spaces). The information is then shown to be sufficient to establish an integration by parts formula over $R^n_+$ for $P$ acting on such functions. The formulation in Sobolev spaces, and the results on strongly elliptic operators going beyond operators with real kernels, are new. Furthermore, large solutions with nonzero Dirichlet traces are described, and a halfways Green's formula is established, for this new class of operators. Since the principal $\mu $-transmission condition has weaker requirements than the full $\mu $-transmission condition assumed in earlier papers, new arguments were needed, relying on work of Vishik and Eskin instead of the Boutet de Monvel theory. The factorization method provides a necessary and sufficient condition for characterizing the shape and position of an unknown scatterer by using far-field patterns of infinitely many time-harmonic plane waves at a fixed frequency (which are also called the multistatic data response matrix). This paper is concerned with the factorization method with a single far-field pattern to recover an arbitrary convex polygonal scatterer/source. Its one-wave version relies on the absence of analytical continuation of the scattered/radiated wave-fields in corner domains. It can be regarded as a domain-defined sampling method and does not require forward solvers. In this paper we provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the one-wave factorization method and present some preliminary numerical examples. In particular, the proposed method can be interpreted as a model-driven and data-driven imaging scheme, and it shows how to incorporate a priori knowledge about the unknown target into the test scatterers for the purpose of detecting obstacles/sources with specific features.

Polynomial factorization in conventional sense is an ill-posed problem due to its discontinuity with respect to coefficient perturbations, making it a challenge for numerical computation using empirical data. As a regularization, this paper formulates the notion of numerical factorization based on the geometry of polynomial spaces and the stratification of factorization manifolds. Furthermore, this paper establishes the existence, uniqueness, Lipschitz continuity, condition number, and convergence of the numerical factorization to the underlying exact factorization, leading to a robust and efficient algorithm with a MATLAB implementation capable of accurate polynomial factorizations using floating point arithmetic even if the coefficients are perturbed.

This paper considers the backstepping state feedback control of coupled linear parabolic PDEs with spatially varying coefficients and bilateral actuation. By making use of the folding technique, a system representation with unilateral actuation is obtained, allowing to apply the standard backstepping transformation. To ensure the regularity of the solution, the folded system is subject to unusual folding boundary conditions, which lead to additional boundary couplings between the PDEs. Therefore, the solution of the corresponding kernel equations determining the transformations is a very challenging problem. A systematic approach to derive the corresponding integral equations is proposed, allowing to solve them with the method of successive approximations. By making use of a Volterra and a Volterra–Fredholm transformation, the closed-loop system is mapped into a cascade of stable parabolic systems. This allows a simple proof of exponential stability in the L 2 -norm with the decay rate as design parameter. The bilateral state feedback stabilization of an unstable system of two coupled parabolic PDEs and the comparison to the application of an unilateral controller demonstrates the results of the paper.

Association Schemes and coherent configurations (and the related Bose-Mesner algebra and coherent algebras) are well known in combinatorics with many applications. In the 1990s, Mesner and Bhattacharya introduced a three-dimensional generalisation of association schemes which they called an association scheme on triples (AST) and constructed examples of several families of ASTs. Many of their examples used 2-transitive permutation groups: the non-trivial ternary relations of the ASTs were sets of ordered triples of pairwise distinct points of the underlying set left invariant by the group; and the given permutation group was a subgroup of automorphisms of the AST. In this paper, we consider ASTs that do not necessarily admit 2-transitive groups as automorphism groups but instead a transitive cyclic subgroup of the symmetric group acts as automorphisms. Such ASTs are called circulant ASTs and the corresponding ternary relations are called circulant relations. We give a complete characterisation of circulant ASTs in terms of AST-regular partitions of the underlying set. We also show that a special type of circulant, that we call a thin circulant, plays a key role in describing the structure of circulant ASTs. This paper presents a one-sided immersed boundary (IB) method using kernel functions constructed via a moving least squares (MLS) method. The resulting kernels effectively couple structural degrees of freedom to fluid variables on only one side of the fluid-structure interface. This reduces spurious feedback forcing and internal flows that are typically observed in IB models that use isotropic kernel functions to couple the structure to fluid degrees of freedom on both sides of the interface. The method developed here extends the original MLS methodology introduced by Vanella and Balaras (J Comput Phys, 2009). Prior IB/MLS methods have used isotropic kernel functions that coupled fluid variables on both sides of the boundary to the interfacial degrees of freedom. The original IB/MLS approach converts the cubic spline weights typically employed in MLS reconstruction into an IB kernel function that satisfies particular discrete moment conditions. This paper shows that the same approach can be used to construct one-sided kernel functions (kernel functions are referred to as generating functions in the MLS literature). We also examine the performance of the new approach for a family of kernel functions introduced by Peskin. It is demonstrated that the one-sided MLS construction tends to generate non-monotone interpolation kernels with large over- and undershoots. We present two simple weight shifting strategies to construct generating functions that are positive and monotone, which enhances the stability of the resulting IB methodology. Benchmark cases are used to test the order of accuracy and verify the one-sided IB/MLS simulations in both two and three spatial dimensions. A nonlinear Markov chain is a discrete time stochastic process whose transitions depend on both the current state and the current distribution of the process. The nonlinear Markov chain over an infinite state space can be identified by a continuous mapping (the so-called nonlinear Markov operator) defined on a set of all probability distributions (which is a simplex). In the present paper, we consider a continuous analogue of the mentioned mapping acting on L 1 -spaces. Main aim of the current paper is to investigate projective surjectivity of quadratic stochastic operators (QSO) acting on the set of all probability measures. To prove the main result, we study the surjectivity of infinite dimensional nonlinear Markov operators and apply them to the projective surjectivity of the considered QSO. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to the existence of the positive solution of some Hammerstein integral equations.

In this paper, we compute the tightest possible bounds on the probability that the optimal value of a combinatorial optimization problem in maximization form with a random objective exceeds a given number, assuming only knowledge of the marginal distributions of the objective coefficient vector. The bounds are 'extremal' since they are valid across all joint distributions with the given marginals. We analyze the complexity of computing the bounds, assuming discrete marginals, and identify instances when the bounds are computable in polynomial time. For compact 0/1 V-polytopes, we show that the tightest upper bound is weakly NP-hard to compute by providing a pseudopolynomial time algorithm. On the other hand, the tightest lower bound is shown to be strongly NP-hard to compute for compact 0/1 V-polytopes by restricting our attention to Bernoulli random variables. For compact 0/1 H-polytopes, for the special case of PERT networks arising in project management, we show that the tightest upper bound is weakly NP-hard to compute by providing a pseudopolynomial time algorithm. The results in the paper complement existing results in the literature for computing the probability with independent random variables.

In this paper, the steady creeping flow equations of a second grade fluid in cartesian coordinates are considered; the equations involve a small parameter related to the dimensionless non--Newtonian coefficient. According to a recently introduced approach, the first order approximate Lie symmetries of the equations are computed, some classes of approximately invariant solutions are explicitly determined, and a boundary value problem is analyzed. In this paper, the problem of full state approximation by model reduction is studied for stochastic and bilinear systems. Our proposed approach relies on identifying the dominant subspaces based on the reachability Gramian of a system. Once the desired subspace is computed, the reduced order model is then obtained by a Galerkin projection. We prove that, in the stochastic case, this approach either preserves mean square asymptotic stability or leads to reduced models whose minimal realization is mean square asymptotically stable. This stability preservation guarantees the existence of the reduced system reachability Gramian which is the basis for the full state error bounds that we derive. This error bound depends on the neglected eigenvalues of the reachability Gramian and hence shows that these values are a good indicator for the expected error in the dimension reduction procedure. Subsequently, we establish the stability preservation result and the error bound for a full state approximation to bilinear systems in a similar manner. These latter results are based on a recently proved link between stochastic and bilinear systems. We conclude the paper by numerical experiments using a benchmark problem. We compare this approach with balanced truncation and show that it performs well in reproducing the full state of the system. \end{abstract}

This paper discusses the stabilizability, weak stabilizability, exact observability and robust quadratic stabilizability of linear stochastic control systems. By means of the spectrum technique of the generalized Lyapunov operator, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for stabilizability and weak stabilizability of stochastic systems, respectively. Some new concepts called unremovable spectrums, strong solutions, and weakly feedback stabilizing solutions are introduced. An unremovable spectrum theorem is given, which generalizes the corresponding theorem of deterministic systems to stochastic systems. A stochastic Popov-Belevith-Hautus (PBH) criterion for exact observability is obtained. For applications, we give a comparison theorem for generalized algebraic Riccati equations (GAREs), and two results on Lyapunov-type equations are obtained, which improve the previous works. Finally, we also discuss robust quadratic stabilization of uncertain stochastic systems, and a necessary and sufficient condition is given for quadratic stabilization via a linear matrix inequality (LMI).

In this paper, we study a dual risk model with delays in the spirit of Dassios-Zhao. When a new innovation occurs, there is a delay before the innovation turns into a profit. We obtain large initial surplus asymptotics for the ruin probability and ruin time distributions. For some special cases, we get closed-form formulas. One of key problems in signal reconstruction process with the use of frames is to find a dual frame. Typically, a canonical dual frame is used. However, there are many applications where this choice appears to be unfortunate. Due to that fact, it is necessary to develop a tool, which helps to find a suitable dual frame. In this paper we give a method to find every dual frames. The proposed method is based on Naimark's dilation theorem and the obtained description of dual frames involves parameters that characterize extension of a Parseval frame to an orthonormal basis. These formulas are simplified for frames in finite-dimensional spaces and for near-Riesz bases. In the latter case, the simplification is based on the extended and supplemented version of the Naimark theorem, which is proved in the last part of the paper.

Recently, many machine learning and statistical models such as non-linear regressions, the Single Index, Multi-index, Varying Coefficient Index Models and Two-layer Neural Networks can be reduced to or be seen as a special case of a new model which is called the \textit{Stochastic Linear Combination of Non-linear Regressions} model. However, due to the high non-convexity of the problem, there is no previous work study how to estimate the model. In this paper, we provide the first study on how to estimate the model efficiently and scalably. Specifically, we first show that with some mild assumptions, if the variate vector $x$ is multivariate Gaussian, then there is an algorithm whose output vectors have $\ell_2$-norm estimation errors of $O(\sqrt{\frac{p}{n}})$ with high probability, where $p$ is the dimension of $x$ and $n$ is the number of samples. The key idea of the proof is based on an observation motived by the Stein's lemma. Then we extend our result to the case where $x$ is bounded and sub-Gaussian using the zero-bias transformation, which could be seen as a generalization of the classic Stein's lemma. We also show that with some additional assumptions there is an algorithm whose output vectors have $\ell_\infty$-norm estimation errors of $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{p}}+\sqrt{\frac{p}{n}})$ with high probability. We also provide a concrete example to show that there exists some link function which satisfies the previous assumptions. Finally, for both Gaussian and sub-Gaussian cases we propose a faster sub-sampling based algorithm and show that when the sub-sample sizes are large enough then the estimation errors will not be sacrificed by too much. Experiments for both cases support our theoretical results. We introduce single-shot X-ray tomography that aims to estimate the target image from a single cone-beam projection measurement. This linear inverse problem is extremely under-determined since the measurements are far fewer than the number of unknowns. Moreover, it is more challenging than conventional tomography where a sufficiently large number of projection angles forms the measurements, allowing for a simple inversion process. However, single-shot tomography becomes less severe if the target image is only composed of known shapes. Hence, the shape prior transforms a linear ill-posed image estimation problem to a non-linear problem of estimating the roto-translations of the shapes. In this paper, we circumvent the non-linearity by using a dictionary of possible roto-translations of the shapes. We propose a convex program CoShaRP to recover the dictionary-coefficients successfully. CoShaRP relies on simplex-type constraint and can be solved quickly using a primal-dual algorithm. The paper considers distributed gradient flow (DGF) for multi-agent nonconvex optimization. DGF is a continuous-time approximation of distributed gradient descent that is often easier to study than its discrete-time counterpart. The paper has two main contributions. First, the paper considers optimization of nonsmooth, nonconvex objective functions. It is shown that DGF converges to critical points in this setting. The paper then considers the problem of avoiding saddle points. It is shown that if agents' objective functions are assumed to be smooth and nonconvex, then DGF can only converge to a saddle point from a zero-measure set of initial conditions. To establish this result, the paper proves a stable manifold theorem for DGF, which is a fundamental contribution of independent interest. In a companion paper, analogous results are derived for discrete-time algorithms.

In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. In this paper, we address the one-parameter families of the fractional integrals and derivatives defined on a finite interval. First we remind the reader of the known fact that under some reasonable conditions, there exists precisely one unique family of the fractional integrals, namely, the well-known Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals. As to the fractional derivatives, their natural definition follows from the fundamental theorem of the Fractional Calculus, i.e., they are introduced as the left-inverse operators to the Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals. Until now, three families of such derivatives were suggested in the literature: the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives, the Caputo fractional derivatives, and the Hilfer fractional derivatives. We clarify the interconnections between these derivatives on different spaces of functions and provide some of their properties including the formulas for their projectors and the Laplace transforms. However, it turns out that there exist infinitely many other families of the fractional derivatives that are the left-inverse operators to the Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals. We study numerical integration for a weighted Korobov space of analytic periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. In particular, we are interested in how the error depends on the dimension d . Many recent papers deal with this problem or similar problems and provide matching necessary and sufficient conditions for various notions of tractability. In most cases even simple algorithms are known which allow to achieve these notions of tractability. However, there is a gap in the literature: while for the notion of exponential-weak tractability one knows matching necessary and sufficient conditions, so far no explicit algorithm has been known which yields the desired result. In this paper we close this gap and prove that Korobov lattice rules are suitable algorithms in order to achieve exponential-weak tractability for integration in weighted Korobov spaces of analytic periodic functions.

In this paper we present the distribution of the maximum of the asymmetric telegraph process in an arbitrary time interval $[0,t]$ under the conditions that the initial velocity $V(0)$ is either $c_1$ or $-c_2$ and the number of changes of direction is odd or even. For the case $V(0) = -c_2$ the singular component of the distribution of the maximum displays an unexpected cyclic behavior and depends only on $c_1$ and $c_2$, but not on the current time $t$. We obtain also the unconditional distribution of the maximum for either $V(0) = c_1$ or $V(0) = -c_2$ and its expression has the form of series of Bessel functions. We also show that all the conditional distributions emerging in this analysis are governed by generalized Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations. We recover all the distributions of the maximum of the symmetric telegraph process as particular cases of the present paper. We underline that it rarely happens to obtain explicitly the distribution of the maximum of a process. For this reason the results on the range of oscillations of a natural process like the telegraph model make it useful for many applications., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

This paper presents a new approach to modeling wave propagation in random, linearly elastic materials, namely by means of Fourier integral operators (FIOs). The FIO representation of the solution to the equations of motion can be used to identify the elastic parameters of the underlying media, as well as their statistical hyperparameters in the randomly perturbed case. A stochastic version of the FIO representation can be used for damage detection. Hypothesis tests are proposed and validated, which are capable of distinguishing between an undamaged and a damaged material, even in the presence of random material parameters. The paper presents both the theoretical fundamentals as well as a numerical experiment, in which the applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated.

In the 90's Clark, Colbourn and Johnson wrote a seminal paper where they proved that maximum clique can be solved in polynomial time in unit disk graphs. Since then, the complexity of maximum clique in intersection graphs of d-dimensional (unit) balls has been investigated. For ball graphs, the problem is NP-hard, as shown by Bonamy et al. (FOCS '18). They also gave an efficient polynomial time approximation scheme (EPTAS) for disk graphs. However, the complexity of maximum clique in this setting remains unknown. In this paper, we show the existence of a polynomial time algorithm for a geometric superclass of unit disk graphs.
