Abstract

International audience; This paper focuses on the problem of the hierarchical multi‐label classification of research papers, which is the task of assigning the set of relevant labels for a paper from a hierarchy, using reduced amounts of labelled training data. Specifically, we study leveraging unlabelled data, which are usually plentiful and easy to collect, in addition to the few available labelled ones in a semi‐supervised learning framework for achieving better performance results. Thus, in this paper, we propose a semi‐supervised approach for the hierarchical multi‐label classification task of research papers based on the well‐known Co‐training algorithm, which exploit content and bibliographic coupling information as two distinct papers' views. In our approach, two hierarchical multi‐label classifiers, are learnt on different views of the labelled data, and iteratively select their most confident unlabelled samples, which are further added to the labelled set. The success of our suggested Co‐training‐based approach lies in two main components. The first is the use of two suggested selection criteria (i.e., Maximum Agreement and Labels Cardinality Consistency) that enforce selecting confident unlabelled samples. The second is the appliance of an oversampling method that rebalances the labels distribution of the initial labelled set, which reduces the reinforcement of the label imbalance issue during the Co‐training learning. The proposed approach is evaluated using a collection of scientific papers extracted from the ACM digital library. Performed experiments show the effectiveness of our approach with regards to several baseline methods.

Abstract

Formulaic expressions, such as 'in this paper we propose', are helpful for authors of scholarly papers because they convey communicative functions; in the above, it is showing the aim of this paper'. Thus, resources of formulaic expressions, such as a dictionary, that could be looked up easily would be useful. However, forms of formulaic expressions can often vary to a great extent. For example, 'in this paper we propose', 'in this study we propose' and 'in this paper we propose a new method to' are all regarded as formulaic expressions. Such a diversity of spans and forms causes problems in both extraction and evaluation of formulaic expressions. In this paper, we propose a new approach that is robust to variation of spans and forms of formulaic expressions. Our approach regards a sentence as consisting of a formulaic part and non-formulaic part. Then, instead of trying to extract formulaic expressions from a whole corpus, by extracting them from each sentence, different forms can be dealt with at once. Based on this formulation, to avoid the diversity problem, we propose evaluating extraction methods by how much they convey specific communicative functions rather than by comparing extracted expressions to an existing lexicon. We also propose a new extraction method that utilises named entities and dependency structures to remove the non-formulaic part from a sentence. Experimental results show that the proposed extraction method achieved the best performance compared to other existing methods., 21 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

A fair assignment of credit for multi-authored publications is a long-standing issue in scientometrics. In the calculation of the $h$-index, for instance, all co-authors receive equal credit for a given publication, independent of a given author's contribution to the work or of the total number of co-authors. Several attempts have been made to distribute the credit in a more appropriate manner. In a recent paper, Hirsch has suggested a new way of credit assignment that is fundamentally different from the previous ones: All credit for a multi-author paper goes to a single author, the called ``$\alpha$-author'', defined as the person with the highest current $h$-index not the highest $h$-index at the time of the paper's publication) (J. E. Hirsch, Scientometrics 118, 673 (2019)). The collection of papers this author has received credit for as $\alpha$-author is then used to calculate a new index, $h_{\alpha}$, following the same recipe as for the usual $h$ index. The objective of this new assignment is not a fairer distribution of credit, but rather the determination of an altogether different property, the degree of a person's scientific leadership. We show that given the complex time dependence of $h$ for individual scientists, the approach of using the current $h$ value instead of the historic one is problematic, and we argue that it would be feasible to determine the $\alpha$-author at the time of the paper's publication instead. On the other hand, there are other practical considerations that make the calculation of the proposed $h_{\alpha}$ very difficult. Abstract

Introduction: Network and systems medicine has rapidly evolved over the past decade, thanks to computational and integrative tools, which stem in part from systems biology. However, major challenges and hurdles are still present regarding validation and translation into clinical application and decision making for precision medicine. Methods: In this context, the Collaboration on Science and Technology Action on Open Multiscale Systems Medicine (OpenMultiMed) reviewed the available advanced technologies for multidimensional data generation and integration in an open-science approach as well as key clinical applications of network and systems medicine and the main issues and opportunities for the future. Results: The development of multi-omic approaches as well as new digital tools provides a unique opportunity to explore complex biological systems and networks at different scales. Moreover, the application of findable, applicable, interoperable, and reusable principles and the adoption of standards increases data availability and sharing for multiscale integration and interpretation. These innovations have led to the first clinical applications of network and systems medicine, particularly in the field of personalized therapy and drug dosing. Enlarging network and systems medicine application would now imply to increase patient engagement and health care providers as well as to educate the novel generations of medical doctors and biomedical researchers to shift the current organ- and symptom-based medical concepts toward network- and systems-based ones for more precise diagnoses, interventions, and ideally prevention. International audience; Whenever a bug or vulnerability is detected in the Linux kernel, the kernel developers will endeavour to fix it by introducing a patch into the mainline version of the Linux kernel source tree. However, many users run older "stable" versions of Linux, meaning that the patch should also be "backported" to one or more of these older kernel versions. This process is error-prone and there is usually a long delay in publishing the backported patch. Based on an empirical study, we show that around 8% of all commits submitted to Linux mainline are backported to older versions, but often more than one month elapses before the backport is available. Hence, we propose a patch backporting technique that can automatically transfer patches from the mainline version of Linux into older stable versions. Our approach first synthesizes a partial transformation rule based on a Linux mainline patch. This rule can then be generalized by analysing the alignment between the mainline and target versions. The generalized rule is then applied to the target version to produce a backported patch. We have implemented our transformation technique in a tool called FixMorph and evaluated it on 350 Linux mainline patches. FixMorph correctly backports 75.1% of them. Compared to existing techniques, FixMorph improves both the precision and recall in backporting patches. Apart from automation of software maintenance tasks, patch backporting helps in reducing the exposure to known security vulnerabilities in stable versions of the Linux kernel.

Abstract

This work develops a multi-objective linear programming model for a multi-echelon, multi-product, multi-period supply chain planning. This model considers all dimensions of sustainable development paradigm simultaneously and expands six objective functions for making the model realistic. To solve this model and large-scale sustainable supply chain management, an improved version of the augmented e-constraint method (AUGMECON2) is used. Computational results illustrate the proposed model admitted various progresses in all the three pillars of sustainable development; namely remarkable progress, mildly progress and irregular one, respectively. In addition, important managerial insights are provided. Trade-off interactions between multi-objectives are perceived by the obtained Pareto solutions that represents the cost of being sustainable from the point of optimizing the social factors and environmental impacts. An application to the paper industry is presented and discussed.

Abstract

Swarms of autonomous aircraft systems (SAAS) are used to accomplish missions that deal with sensitive and critical data. As such, these systems are subject to attacks among which clone attacks. Several clone attacks detection approaches either in stationary or mobile wireless sensor networks have been proposed. Unfortunately, the existing approaches are not suitable for swarms of autonomous aircraft systems because either they do not guarantee a fast enough detection (while most SAAS missions are real time missions, e.g. surveillance), or they depend on strong assumptions that are hard to achieve in practice (e.g. absence of nodes collusion, impossibility for an attacker to track a genuine node). In this paper, we present a novel clone attack detection approach specific to SAAS that solves several unaddressed issues and that makes it possible to improve the security and the privacy of the assets of the SAAS.

Abstract

Fault diagnosis of sequential batch reactor (SBR), a widely applied wastewater treatment technology in papermaking industry with huge discharge, has been a significant challenge due to the inherent multi-period characteristics of the process. In this paper, based on the conventional multi-way principal component analysis (MPCA) method (Scenario 0), two sub-period division strategies based on the processing phases of SBR process (Scenario 1) and the similarities of the loading matrices between the adjacent time slices (Scenario 2) are proposed for the detection of faults. Combined with Scenario 0, using the field data of blower current, level of SBR reactor, dissolved oxygen of wastewater and the blower valve opening in the SBR process of paper mill, two different fault diagnosis models with Scenarios 1 and 2 are developed and evaluated, respectively. The study results revealed that, both the calculated statistics of T2 and sum of prediction errors (SPE) of the fault diagnosis models with Scenarios 1 and 2 could detect the faults and identify the fault locations and sources. Compared to Scenario 0 which neglects the correlations between the different stages of SBR process, the fault diagnosis model by Scenario 2 demonstrated a superiority ability in fault identification in terms of the fault’s time onset and fault’s sources with adequate accuracy. The results enable the feasible and reliable implementation of the developed sub-MPCA diagnosis model with Scenario 2 in the actual SBR plants.

Abstract

Proof assistants are getting more widespread use in research and industry to provide certified and independently checkable guarantees about theories, designs, systems and implementations. However, proof assistant implementations themselves are seldom verified, although they take a major share of the trusted code base in any such certification effort. In this area, proof assistants based on Higher-Order Logic enjoy stronger guarantees, as self-certified implementations have been available for some years. One cause of this difference is the inherent complexity of dependent type theories together with their extensions with inductive types, universe polymorphism and complex sort systems, and the gap between theory on paper and practical implementations in efficient programming languages. MetaCoq is a collaborative project that aims to tackle these difficulties to provide the first fully-certified realistic implementation of a type checker for the full calculus underlying the Coq proof assistant. To achieve this, we refined the sometimes blurry, if not incorrect, specification and implementation of the system. We show how theoretical tools from this community such as bidirectional type-checking, Tait-Martin-L\"of/Takahashi's confluence proof technique and monadic and dependently-typed programming can help construct the following artefacts: a specification of Coq's syntax and type theory, the Polymorphic Cumulative Calculus of (Co)-Inductive Constructions (PCUIC); a monad for the manipulation of raw syntax and interaction with the Coq system; a verification of PCUIC's metatheory, whose main results are the confluence of reduction, type preservation and principality of typing; a realistic, correct and complete type-checker for PCUIC; a sound type and proof erasure procedure from PCUIC to untyped lambda-calculus, i.e., the core of the extraction mechanism of Coq., Comment: In Proceedings LFMTP 2021, arXiv:2107.07376

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the design, implementation, and prototype of a low-cost Braille embossing mechanism. The proposal is a printer head integrating three hammers that, upon actuation, stamp readable dots on the paper. Inspired in the rotary cam-follower mechanism, the hammers are actuated by a single servomotor which rotation determines which hammer strikes the paper. Braille characters can be quickly embossed using the proposed printer head. Affordable and efficient Braille embossers for home use can be envisaged using this new action approach.

Abstract

session: Antenna and Propagation; International audience; The design of antennas on cellulosic flexible materials such as paper can be very challenging because of the limited thickness and the high losses in the Radio Frequency (RF) domain. In this paper, a novel patch antenna with an origami structure is proposed to address the null radiation efficiency obtained with the conventional paper-based structure. As the electromagnetic waves mostly travel in the air, ideal conditions such as no loss and a low dielectric constant allow for the asymptotic value of directivity of microstrip antennas to be reached with a 63 % experimental radiation efficiency. This flexible antenna can be used for RF energy harvesting or sensing applications due to the sensitivity of paper on atmospheric conditions.

Abstract

International audience; Advanced internet and multimedia set-top boxes are today massively based on 4*4 MIMO systems, with multi-sub-bands standards (Wifi bands, LTE, Bluetooth,…). Multiple antennas spatially distributed on the plastic casing become therefore a great challenge for cost and performances motivations, thus promoting flexible technology and substrate, for assembling subsystems , under compactness considerations, as well as electrical performances improvement. In this paper, we discuss about the characterisation of Multi-band antennas designed on an ultra-low cost material (a cellulosic substrate, i.e. a paper) with design challenges in terms of radiation efficiency maximization and wideband properties under compactness constraints. Simulation and measurements are proposed to validate the designs.

Abstract

Part 3: Recommendation System; International audience; Vector representations learning (also known as embeddings) for users (items) are at the core of modern recommendation systems. Existing works usually map users and items to low-dimensional space to predict user preferences for items and describe pre-existing features (such as ID) of users (or items) to obtain the embedding of the user (or item). However, we argue that such methods neglect the dual role of users, side information of users and items (e.g., dual citation relationship of authors, authoritativeness of authors and papers) when recommendation is performed for scientific paper. As such, the resulting representations may be insufficient to predict optimal author citations.In this paper, we contribute a new model named scientific paper recommendation using Author’s Dual Role Citation Relationship (ADRCR) to capture authors’ citation relationship. Our model incorporates the reference relation between author and author, the citation relationship between author and paper, and the authoritativeness of authors and papers into a unified framework. In particular, our model predicts author citation relationship in each specific class. Experiments on the DBLP dataset demonstrate that ADRCR outperforms state-of-the-art recommendation methods. Further analysis shows that modeling the author’s dual role is particularly helpful for providing recommendation for sparse users that have very few interactions.

Abstract

International audience; The differential diagnosis of differences or disorders of sex development (DSD) belongs to the most complex fields in medicine. It requires a multidisciplinary team conducting a synoptic and complementary approach consisting of thorough clinical, hormonal and genetic workups. This position paper of EU COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action BM1303 'DSDnet' was written by leading experts in the field and focuses on current best practice in genetic diagnosis in DSD patients. Ascertainment of the karyotpye defines one of the three major diagnostic DSD subclasses and is therefore the mandatory initial step. Subsequently, further analyses comprise molecular studies of monogenic DSD causes or analysis of copy number variations (CNV) or both. Panels of candidate genes provide rapid and reliable results. Whole exome and genome sequencing (WES and WGS) represent valuable methodological developments that are currently in the transition from basic science to clinical routine service in the field of DSD. However, in addition to covering known DSD candidate genes, WES and WGS help to identify novel genetic causes for DSD. Diagnostic interpretation must be performed with utmost caution and needs careful scientific validation in each DSD case.

July, 2020.; International audience; We present a semi-supervised ensemble clustering framework for identifying relevant multi-level clusters, regarding application objectives, in large datasets and mapping them to application classes for predicting the class of new instances. This framework extends the MultiCons closed sets based multiple consensus clustering approach but can easily be adapted to other ensemble clustering approaches. It was developed to optimize theAmadeus S.A.S revenue accounting workflow management. Revenue accounting in travel industry is a complex task when travels include several transportations, with associated services, performed by distinct operators and on geographical areas with different taxes and currencies for example. Preliminary results show the relevance of the proposed approach for the automation of workflow anomaly corrections.

Abstract

International audience; Among the programming models for parallel and distributed computing, one can identify two important families. The programming models adapted to data-parallelism, where a set of coordinated processes perform a computation by splitting the input data; and coordination languages able to express complex coordination patterns and rich interactions between processing entities. This article takes two successful programming models belonging to the two categories and puts them together into an effective programming model. More precisely, we investigate the use of active objects to coordinate BSP processes. We choose two paradigms that both enforce the absence of data-races, one of the major sources of error in parallel programming. This article explains why we believe such a model is interesting and provides a formal semantics integrating the notions of the two programming paradigms in a coherent and effective manner.

Abstract

Publication doctorant; International audience; Our research team is specialized in human-computer systems and their engineering, with focus on interactive software systems for aeronautics (from cockpits to control towers). This context stands out by the need for certification, such as DO-178 or ED-12. Today, formal methods are pushed forward, as one of the best tools to achieve the verification and validation of properties, leading to the certification of these systems. Interactive systems are reactive computer systems that process information from their environment and produce a representation of their internal state. They offer new rich interfaces with sophisticated interactions. Their certification is a challenge, because the validation is often a human based process since traditional formal tools are not always suitable to the verification of graphical properties in particular.In this paper, we explore the scientific work that has been done in formal methods for interactive systems over the last decade, in a systematic study of publications in the International Workshop on Formal Methods for Interactive Systems. We describe an analytical framework that we apply to classify the studied work into classes of properties and used formalisms. We then discuss the emerging findings, mainly the lack of papers addressing the formal specification or validation of perceptibility properties. We conclude with an overview of our future work in this area.

Abstract

Photographic negative images on paper are certainly the earliest types of photographs ever produced, giving access to multiple photographic prints using a unique matrix. As early as 1841 in France, many variants of the paper negatives processes have been developed by skilled chemists and photographers covering a wide spectrum of practical and aesthetic concerns. Nowadays, due to their inherent historical and esthetical values, those negatives are getting an increasing interest from the art and museum community. However, their materiality has been poorly studied despite a large variety of processes involving many different chemicals and organic coatings; limiting our possibilities of identification, attribution or even preservation. The aim of this work was to develop a methodology to better assess the way those images were produced based on physical and chemical characteristics. A non-invasive approach combining optical, vibrational and X-ray spectroscopies was implemented on a collection of 138 historical images between 1841 and 1856 from French collections. A survey was carried out on these negatives to provide a series of relevant physical data (dimensions, thickness, weight, etc). Non-invasive reflectance FTIR showed great potentiality in revealing the presence of organic sizing (gelatin) or impregnation (wax). Multivariate analysis was applied on XRF data to help clustering negatives that have similar elemental composition and highlight relationships between makers. Finally, the morphological, physical and chemical results were all combined to answer historical questioning on the paper negative process.

Abstract

International audience; With the increasing development of handheld devices, Location Based Services (LBSs) became very popular in facilitating users' daily life with a broad range of applications (e.g. traffic monitoring, geo-located search, geo-gaming). However , several studies have shown that the collected mobility data may reveal sensitive information about end-users such as their home and workplaces, their gender, political, religious or sexual preferences. To overcome these threats, many Location Privacy Protection Mechanisms (LPPMs) were proposed in the literature. While the existing LPPMs try to protect most of the users in mobility datasets, there is usually a subset of users who are not protected by any of the existing LPPMs. By analogy to medical research, there are orphan diseases, for which the medical community is still looking for a remedy. In this paper, we present MooD, a fine-grained multi-LPPM user-centric solution whose main objective is to find a treatment to mobile users' orphan disease by protecting them from re-identification attacks. Our experiments are conducted on four real world datasets. The results show that MooD outperforms its competitors, and the amount of user mobility data it is able to protect is in the range between 97.5% to 100% on the various datasets. This artifact includes source code, scripts and datasets required to reproduce the experimental figures in the evaluation of the MM'18 paper, which is entitled "MiniView Layout for Bandwidth-Efficient 360-Degree Video". The artifact reports the comparison results among the standard cube layout (CUBE), the equi-angular layout (EAC), and the MiniView layout (MVL) in terms of compressed video size, visual quality of views and decoding and rendering time.

Abstract

One important feature required by autonomous vehicles is the ability to perform a localization task in order to navigate in both known (urban, suburban, and highways) and unknown environments. Instead of relying on LIDAR technology, we propose to leverage a bio-inspired algorithm relying on more conventional cameras and a large neural network (NN) [2]. Yet, this approach must be able to scale. We propose to investigate the development of an FPGA-based solution. Due to the size of NN, dynamic partial reconfiguration will be required, and an efficient (software-based) scheduler must place the hardware tasks on multiple FPGA chip. We intend to implement this algorithm using a unique custom board, Wizarde, which embeds a 3 × 3 matrix of Zynq SoCs with high-end FPGAs to prototype a possible solution.

Abstract

International audience; An analytical method based on the combination of on-line pyrolysis-comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and multivariate analysis for a direct characterization of traditional East Asian handmade papers is presented here. The method was applied to three kinds of widely used handmade papers in East Asia followed by an attempt of identification of ancient lining papers belonging to museum samples of unknown origin. The results indicated that Py-GCxGC/MS, together with multivariate data analysis, was more efficient and reliable compared to the compound presence/absence analysis to meet the challenging search for organic markers in rare cultural heritage materials. The established method showed promises as an efficient analytical tool for the characterization of artwork and culture heritage materials and in filling the lacuna for papermaking fiber analysis which is currently almost entirely relied on microscopy analysis. Results also revealed that two-dimensional techniques could constitute an efficient approach for the analysis of complex artwork samples to circumvent the limitation of materials at disposal in cultural heritage studies.

International audience; The paper presents a new segmentation method for Integrated ICS (Industrial Control Systems) with Corporate system. This new method aims at simplifying security zones identification by focusing only on the system's aspects that are really relevant for segmentation taking into account the system's constraints. Multiple research works have studied IICS (Inte-grated ICS) segmentation but their solutions are unfortunately not generic enough and do not sufficiently take into account all of the Integrated ICS specificity. Our new method tries to address the problem more efficiently by providing realistic and pragmatic answers to the issue while remaining sufficiently generic to be applied to different types of Integrated ICS.

International audience; A growing fraction of the papers published by CCR and at SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences include artifacts such as software or datasets. Besides CCR, these artifacts were rarely evaluated. During the last months of 2018, we organised two different Artifacts Evaluation Committees to which authors could submit the artifacts of their papers for evaluation. The first one evaluated the papers accepted by Conext’18 shortly after the TPC decision. It assigned ACM reproducibility badges to 12 different papers. The second one evaluated papers accepted by CCR and any SIGCOMM-sponsored conference. 28 papers received ACM reproducibility badges. We report on the results of a short survey among artifacts authors and reviewers and provide some suggestions for future artifacts evaluations.

Abstract

We present explorable multiverse analysis reports, a new approach to statistical reporting where readers of research papers can explore alternative analysis options by interacting with the paper itself. This approach draws from two recent ideas: i) multiverse analysis, a philosophy of statistical reporting where paper authors report the outcomes of many different statistical analyses in order to show how fragile or robust their findings are; and ii) explorable explanations, narratives that can be read as normal explanations but where the reader can also become active by dynamically changing some elements of the explanation. Based on five examples and a design space analysis, we show how combining those two ideas can complement existing reporting approaches and constitute a step towards more transparent research papers.

Sometimes the quality of a process is best expressed by a relationship between response variables and explanatory variables. Checking over the time the stability of such functional relationships using statistical methods is called “profile monitoring”. Since 2007, when a detailed review paper in the field of profile monitoring was presented, an increasing number of papers have been published in this area. In this paper, we present a conceptual classification scheme and classify the papers in this area since 2008 up to 2018. The relevant papers are categorized and analyzed under different metrics and directions for future studies are recommended.

Abstract

International audience; The work presented in this paper deals with the use of ontologies to compare scientific texts. It particularly deals with scientific papers, specifically their abstracts, short texts that are relatively well structured and normally provide enough knowledge to allow a community of readers to assess the content of the associated scientific papers. The problem is, therefore, to determine how to assess the semantic proximity/similarity of two papers by examining their respective abstracts. Given that a domain ontology provides a useful way to represent knowledge relative to a given domain, this work considers ontologies relative to scientific domains. Our process begins by defining the relevant domain for an abstract through an automatic classification that makes it possible to associate this abstract to its relevant scientific domain, chosen from several candidate domains. The content of an abstract is represented in the form of a conceptual graph which is enriched to construct its semantic perimeter. As presented below, this notion of semantic perimeter usefully allows us to assess the similarity between the texts by matching their graphs. Detecting plagiarism is the main application field addressed in this paper, among the many possible application fields of our approach.

Abstract

International audience; Citation analysis is considered as major and one of the most popular branches of bibliometrics. Citation analysis is based on the assumption that all citations have similar values and weights each equally. Speciï¿¿c research ï¿¿elds like content-based citation analysis (CCA) seeks to explain the "how" and "why" of citation behavior. In this paper we tackle to explain the "how" from a centrality indicator based on factors which are built automatically according to the authors' citation behavior. This indicator allows to evaluate bibliographical references' importance for reading the paper with which user interacts. From objective quantitative measurements, factors are computed in order to characterize the level of granularity where citations are used. By the setting of the centrality indicator's factors we can highlight citations which tend towards a partial or a global construction of the authors' discourse. We carry out a pilot study in which we test our approach on some papers and discuss the challenges in carrying out the citation analysis in this context. Our results show interesting and consistent correlations between the level of granularity and the signiï¿¿cance of citation inï¿¿uences.

Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of using programmers as root of trust, for bare metal terminals, such as blockchain crypto terminals. When electronics devices are delivered through non trusted supply chains, there is a risk of malware injection. Bare metal architecture defeats these threats, but raises the issue of programmer integrity insurance. We propose to use innovative integrity probe software whose goal is to detect malicious bootloader thanks to which they are downloaded in the programmer memory.

International audience; Electromechanical systems are an interesting type of coupled systems. The mutual infuence between electromagnetic and mechanical subsystems characterizes coupling. Each subsystem afects the behaviour of the other. Typically, the dynamics of an electromechanical system is expressed by an initial value problem (IVP) that comprises a set of coupled differential equations involving electrical and mechanical variables, as for example, current and angle. This article discusses a hypothesis found in a recent paper published in this journal (“On nonlinear dynamics behavior of an electromechanical pendulum excited by a nonideal motor and a chaos control taking into account parametric errors”) and in some thesis. The hypothesis is that it is possible to consider the derivative of the current equal to zero in the IVP that gives the dynamics of an electromechanicalsystem without changing the system dynamics. The hypothesis is based only on some parameter values and, also, does not depend on the electromechanical system being analysed. Apparently, it is a nice hypothesis since it simplifes the dynamics greatly. With the hypothesis, the number of equations in the IVP that gives the dynamics is reduced. The hypothesis results in a reduced system, a simplification of the complete one. However, the hypothesis contradicts itself and changes the dynamics. The reduced system does not represent the complete system, and, moreover, it decouples the electromagnetic and mechanical subsystems. The reduction eliminates the mutual interaction between the subsystems, i.e., eliminates the coupling. To highlight the problems of the reduction, self-contradiction and dynamical change, we analyse the efects of the hypothesis for a simple electromechanical system, a motor-cart system. For the chosen system, the equations of the two IVP, reduced and complete, are presented and numerical simulations are performed. Considering just the results of simulations of the reduced IVP, it is possible to verify the self-contradiction of the hypothesis made. Comparing the results of simulations of the reduced and complete IVPs, it is possible to see, immediately, the big difference between the two dynamics.

International audience; Prototyping interactive objects with personal fabrication tools like 3D printers requires the maker to create subsequent design artifacts from scratch which produces unnecessary waste and does not allow to reuse functional components. We present Interactive Tangrami, paper-folded and reusable building blocks (Tangramis) that can contain various sensor input and visual output capabilities. We propose a digital design toolkit that lets the user plan the shape and functionality of a design piece. The software manages the communication to the physical artifact and streams the interaction data via the Open Sound protocol (OSC) to an application prototyping system (e.g. MaxMSP). The building blocks are fabricated digitally with a rapid and inexpensive ink-jet printing method. Our systems allows to prototype physical user interfaces within minutes and without knowledge of the underlying technologies. We demo its usefulness with two application examples.

Abstract

International audience; Ecological networks are tools for conservation planning that rely on the concept of connectivity. Criticisms leveled at them are that they are widely used in a dogmatic way regardless of how they compare against other tools and that their efficiency is rarely assessed. I propose to include landscape graphs in the debate because they are designed to be operational models of ecological networks. I outline the key features of landscape graphs that can be matched with some of these criticisms: weighting of patches and links to take the landscape matrix into account, integrated metrics dealing with both connectivity and amount of habitat, and the possibility of including them in a decision-support system based on scenario analyses. I conclude that criticisms of ecological networks reveal the lack of diffusion of modeling tools such as landscape graphs, and that approaches such as participatory modeling bringing together scientists and practitioners could be one way to improve matters.

Abstract

International audience; The task of tagging papers with semantic metadata in order to analyze their relatedness represents a good foundation for a paper recommender system. The analysis from this paper extends from previous research in order to create a graph of papers from a specific domain with the purpose of determining each article's importance within the considered corpus of papers. Moreover, as non-latent representations are powerful when used in conjunction with latent ones, our system retrieves semantically close words, not present in the paper, in order to improve the retrieval of papers. Our previous analyses used the semantic representation of papers in different semantic models with the purpose of creating visual graphs based on the semantic relatedness links between the abstracts. The current analysis takes a step forward by proposing a model that can suggest which papers are of the highest relevance, share similar concepts, and are semantically related with the initial query. Our study is performed using paper abstracts in the field of information technology extracted from the Web of Science citation index. The research includes a use case and its corresponding results by using interactive and exploratory network graph representations.

Abstract

International audience; The demand for rapid diagnostic in developing countries has recently increased, in part due to growing populations, emerging diseases, and rise in healthcare cost. Use of low-cost lateral flow/dipstick devices, especially paper-based ones, has increased. In most of the developing world, however, biomedical waste management systems either do not exist or are poor, as such, used devices either get incinerated or dumped alongside household trash. The plastic casing that is often used to hold the test strip, while useful before the test, also slows the biodegradation of the used contaminated devices. We demonstrate that by replacing the plastic casing with paper encasements, we promote biodegradation of these devices while reducing its total weight, making their transport and packaging more compact and more environmentally friendly—hence qualifying this simple modification as green engineering. The ability to use paper casing has the added advantage that devices can be readily assembled locally with ease and without need for sophisticated manufacturing tools as needed with the plastic casings.

Abstract

High frequency paper-based electronics is developing fast, with smart yet low cost applications in view. However, the dielectric losses of paper remain a difficult hurdle to overcome. First, the literature on the topic is reviewed and the contributions from moisture, air, mineral filler, and wood constituents to dielectric losses are highlighted. Then, the guidelines for future research are defined, including the need for systematic comparisons in controlled moisture conditions. In an effort to produce low loss materials for paper-based electronics, it is proposed here to impregnate paper with a low loss substance, after removing residual water.

Abstract

International audience; In a context of the end of Moore's law, energy dissipation constitutes a real challenge. Among the new energy efficient paradigms for data processing, bio-inspired computing is very promising, moreover introducing cognitive characteristics. As applications at very high scale are addressed, the size and energy dissipation of both the neuron and synapse cells needs to be minimized. In this context, this paper presents the design of an original artificial neuron, using standard 65nm CMOS technology with optimized energy efficiency and its application in basic neural networks. By recalling brain and neuron features, it is shown why neuron energy efficiency is roughly limited to 1 pJ/spike in biological neuron. Biological and artificial neurons features are carefully compared, highlighting the importance of downscaling. The artificial neuron circuit presented was designed to exhibit wide band spiking frequencies, targeting large scale bio-inspired information processing applications. The most important feature of the fabricated circuits is the neuron energy efficiency in the few fJ/spike range, which improves prior state-of-the-art by two to three orders of magnitude. This performance is achieved by minimizing two key parameters: the supply voltage and the related membrane capacitance. Meanwhile, the obtained standby power at a resting output does not exceed tens of picowatts. The circuit is sized to 35 mu m(2), reaching a spiking output frequency of 26kHz. It is then shown how this artificial technology has already been used for two applications: (i) emulation of bursting mode, important in brain stimulation context or for robotics (locomotion rhythm), (ii) stochastic resonance application, useful to detect an electrical signal buried in noise, phenomena exploited in nature by species. These results already allow envisioning the development of highly integrated neuro-processors (vision application). A variant circuit (biomimetic) could be used for robotics, neuroscience or medical applications.

Abstract

International audience; We present a phenomenological model for the real-time simulation of paper tearing and sound. The model uses as input rotations of the hand along with the index and thumb of left and right hands to drive the position and orientation of two regions of a sheet of paper. The motion of the hands produces a cone shaped deformation of the paper and guides the formation and growth of the tear. We create a model for the direction of the tear based on empirical observation, and add detail to the tear with a directed noise model. Furthermore, we present a procedural sound synthesis method to produce tearing sounds during interaction. We show a variety of paper tearing examples and discuss applications and limitations.

Abstract

International audience; Illustrators are advanced users of both traditional and computer-assisted drawing tools, and therefore, observing their strategies is very valuable for research on drawing interfaces. We interviewed four professional illustrators in their work environment. We also followed the work of an artist for a two-year period. We observed that artists mix a variety of techniques that involve specialized computer software and hardware such as Adobe Photoshop, a graphics tablet and a scanner, and traditional physical tools such as pencils, paper, and customized light tables. Our findings inspired BricoSketch, an augmented paper interface that enables illustrators to zoom into parts of their drawings and work at different levels of detail on paper. Our early results demonstrate that BricoSketch supports real tasks, improving productivity on paper while enhancing illustrators’ creative ways of working.

International audience; Sentiment analysis has grown to become increasingly important for companies to more accurately understand customer/supplier sentiments about their processes/products and services, and predict customer churn. In particular, existing sentiment analysis aims to better understand their customer’s or supplier’s emotions which are essentially the affirmative, negative, and neutral views of users on tangible or intangible entities e.g., products or services. One of the most prevalent sources to analyse these sentiments is Twitter. Unfortunately, however, existing sentiment analysis techniques suffer from three serious shortcomings: (1) they have problems to effectively deal with streaming data as they can merely exploit (Twitter) hashtags, and (2) neglect the context of Tweets. In this paper, we present SANA: a context-aware solution for dealing with streaming (Twitter) data, analysing this data on the fly taking into account context and more comprehensive semantics of Tweets, and dynamically monitoring and visualising trends in sentiments through dashboarding and query facilities.

Making these quantitative, via electrochemical or optical approaches, is the present day challenge, with a vision that one day, these will be connected to smartphone technologies, which exhibit a promising digital platform for point‐of‐care diagnostics, mobile healthcare and bioanalytical needs. These devices are fully automated and equipped with a high resolution camera, a powerful processor with high storage capacity, wireless connectivity, real‐time geo‐tagging, secure data management, and cloud computing.

Abstract

This paper deals with the Two-Dimensional Cutting Stock Problem with Setup Cost (2CSP-S). This problem is composed of three optimization sub-problems: a 2-D Bin Packing (2BP) problem (to place images on patterns), a Linear Programming (LP) problem (to find for each pattern the number of stock sheets to be printed) and a combinatorial problem (to find the number of each image on each pattern). In this article, we solve the 2CSP-S focusing on this third sub-problem. A genetic algorithm was developed to automatically find the proper number of each image on patterns. It is important to notice that our approach is not a new packing technique. This work was conducted for a paper industry company and experiments were realized on real and artificial datasets.
