A simple, equipment-free, direct fluorometric method, employing paper-based analytical devices (PADs) as sensors, for the selective determination of quinine (QN) is described herein. The suggested analytical method exploits the fluorescence emission of QN without any chemical reaction after the appropriate pH adjustment with nitric acid, at room temperature, on the surface of a paper device with the application of a UV lamp at 365 nm. The devices crafted had a low cost and were manufactured with chromatographic paper and wax barriers, and the analytical protocol followed was extremely easy for the analyst and required no laboratory instrumentation. According to the methodology, the user must place the sample on the detection area of the paper and read with a smartphone the fluorescence emitted by the QN molecules. Many chemical parameters were optimized, and a study of interfering ions present in soft drink samples was carried out. Additionally, the chemical stability of these paper devices was considered in various maintenance conditions with good results. The detection limit calculated as 3.3 S/N was 3.6 mg L−1, and the precision of the method was satisfactory, being from 3.1% (intra-day) to 8.8% (inter-day). Soft drink samples were successfully analyzed and compared with a fluorescence method.

Traces of mercury ions in environmental water can harm humans and animals. Paper-based visual detection methods have been widely developed for the rapid detection of mercury ions; however, existing methods are not sensitive enough to be used in real environments. Here, we developed a novel, simple and effective visual fluorescent sensing paper-based chip for the ultrasensitive detection of mercury ions in environmental water. CdTe-quantum-dots-modified silica nanospheres were firmly absorbed by and anchored to the fiber interspaces on the paper’s surface to effectively avoid the unevenness caused by liquid evaporation. The fluorescence of quantum dots emitted at 525 nm can be selectively and efficiently quenched with mercury ions, and the ultrasensitive visual fluorescence sensing results attained using this principle can be captured using a smartphone camera. This method has a detection limit of 2.83 µg/L and a fast response time (90 s). We successfully achieved the trace spiking detection of seawater (from three regions), lake water, river water and tap water with recoveries in the range of 96.8–105.4% using this method. This method is effective, low-cost, user-friendly and has good prospects for commercial application. Additionally, the work is expected to be utilized in the automated big data collection of large numbers of environmental samples.

In this paper, the paper cups were used as the research objects, and the machine vision detection technology was combined with different image processing techniques to investigate a non-contact optical automatic detection system to identify the defects of the manufactured paper cups. The combined ring light was used as the light source, an infrared (IR) LED matrix panel was used to provide the IR light to constantly highlight the outer edges of the detected objects, and a multi-grid pixel array was used as the image sensor. The image processing techniques, including the Gaussian filter, Sobel operator, Binarization process, and connected component, were used to enhance the inspection and recognition of the defects existing in the produced paper cups. There were three different detection processes for paper cups, which were divided into internal, external, and bottom image acquisition processes. The present study demonstrated that all the detection processes could clearly detect the surface defect features of the manufactured paper cups, such as dirt, burrs, holes, and uneven thickness. Our study also revealed that the average time for the investigated Automatic Optical Detection to detect the defects on the paper cups was only 0.3 s.

The direct integration of paper-based microfluidic fuel cells (μFC’s) toward creating autonomous lateral flow assays has attracted attention. Here, we show that an air-breathing paper-based μFC could be used as a power supply in pregnancy tests by oxidizing the human urine used for the diagnosis. We present an air-breathing paper-based μFC connected to a pregnancy test, and for the first time, as far as we know, it is powered by human urine without needing any external electrolyte. It uses TiO2-Ni as anode and Pt/C as cathode; the performance shows a maximum value of voltage and current and power densities of ∼0.96 V, 1.00 mA cm−2, and 0.23 mW cm−2, respectively. Furthermore, we present a simple design of a paper-based μFC’s stack powered with urine that shows a maximum voltage and maximum current and power densities of ∼1.89 V, 2.77 mA cm−2 and 1.38 mW cm−2, respectively, which powers the display of a pregnancy test allowing to see the analysis results.

The use of enzyme-based biosensors for the detection and quantification of analytes of interest such as contaminants of emerging concern, including over-the-counter medication, provides an attractive alternative compared to more established techniques. However, their direct application to real environmental matrices is still under investigation due to the various drawbacks in their implementation. Here, we report the development of bioelectrodes using laccase enzymes immobilized onto carbon paper electrodes modified with nanostructured molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The laccase enzymes were two isoforms (LacI and LacII) produced and purified from the fungus Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43 that is native to Mexico. A commercial purified enzyme from the fungus Trametes versicolor (TvL) was also evaluated to compare their performance. The developed bioelectrodes were used in the biosensing of acetaminophen, a drug widely used to relieve fever and pain, and of which there is recent concern about its effect on the environment after its final disposal. The use of MoS2 as a transducer modifier was evaluated, and it was found that the best detection was achieved using a concentration of 1 mg/mL. Moreover, it was found that the laccase with the best biosensing efficiency was LacII, which achieved an LOD of 0.2 µM and a sensitivity of 0.108 µA/µM cm2 in the buffer matrix. Moreover, the performance of the bioelectrodes in a composite groundwater sample from Northeast Mexico was analyzed, achieving an LOD of 0.5 µM and a sensitivity of 0.015 µA/µM cm2. The LOD values found are among the lowest reported for biosensors based on the use of oxidoreductase enzymes, while the sensitivity is the highest currently reported.

To stabilize the detection signal of palladium-based hydrogen sensors on paper substrates, a graphite intermediate layer was painted on the surface of paper. The graphite-on-paper (GOP) substrate offers advantages such as good thermo-electrical conductivity, low cost, and uncomplicated preparation technology. Quasi-1-dimensional palladium (Pd) thin films with 8 nm and 60 nm thicknesses were deposited on the GOP substrates using the vacuum evaporation technique. Thanks to the unique properties of the GOP substrate, a continuous Pd microfiber network structure appeared after deposition of the ultra-thin Pd film. Additionally, the sensing performance of the palladium-based hydrogen sensor was not affected, whether using GOP or paper substrate at 25 °C. Surprisingly, heating-induced loss of sensitivity was restrained due to the increased electrical conductivity of the GOP substrate at 50 °C.

With a growing number of electronic devices surrounding our daily life, it becomes increasingly important to create solutions for clear and simple communication and interaction at the human machine interface (HMI). Haptic feedback solutions play an important role as they give a clear direct link and response to the user. This work demonstrates multifunctional haptic feedback devices based on fully printed piezoelectric transducers realized with functional polymers on thin paper substrate. The devices are flexible; lightweight and show very high out-of-plane deflection of 213 µm at a moderate driving voltage of 50 Vrms (root mean square) achieved by an innovative multilayer design with up to five individually controllable active layers. The device creates a very clear haptic sensation to the human skin with a blocking force of 0.6 N at the resonance frequency of 320 Hz, which is located in the most sensitive range of the human fingertip. Additionally the transducer generates audible information above two kilohertz with a remarkable high sound pressure level. Thus the paper-based approach can be used for interactive displays in combination with touch sensation; sound and color prints. The work gives insights into the manufacturing process; the electrical characteristics; and an in-depth analysis of the 3D deflection of the device under variable conditions

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) represent one of the promising green analytical strategies for low-cost and simple determination of various analytes. The actual task is the development of such devices for quantitation of antioxidants, e.g., flavonoids. In this paper, possibilities of a novel three-reagent µPAD including silver nitrate, 4-nitrophenyldiazonium tetrafluoroborate, and iron(III) chloride as reagents are assessed with respect to the determination of dihydroquercetin. It is shown that all the three reagents produce different colorimetric responses that can be detected by a mini-spectrophotometer–monitor calibrator or by a smartphone. The method is applicable to direct measuring high contents of dihydroquercetin (the linearity range is 0.026–1 mg mL−1, and the limit of detection is 7.7 µg mL−1), which is favorable for many dietary supplements. The analysis of a food supplement was possible with the relative standard deviations of 9–26%, which is satisfactory for quantitative and semiquantitative determinations. It was found that plotting a calibration graph in 3D space of the three reagents’ responses allows us to distinguish dihydroquercetin from its close structural analogue, quercetin.

Today, optical sensors are the subject of a very significant number of studies and applications. Many well-established technologies, including free-space optics, integrated photonics, and fiber optics approaches, have been developed in recent decades to fabricate and develop increasingly more efficient optical sensors for applications ranging from industrial control to monitoring the environment, biomedical use, and even as part of the Internet of Things.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many works have been published proposing solutions to the problems that arose in this scenario. In this vein, one of the topics that attracted the most attention is the development of computer-based strategies to detect COVID-19 from thoracic medical imaging, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography scan (CT scan). By searching for works already published on this theme, we can easily find thousands of them. This is partly explained by the fact that the most severe worldwide pandemic emerged amid the technological advances recently achieved, and also considering the technical facilities to deal with the large amount of data produced in this context. Even though several of these works describe important advances, we cannot overlook the fact that others only use well-known methods and techniques without a more relevant and critical contribution. Hence, differentiating the works with the most relevant contributions is not a trivial task. The number of citations obtained by a paper is probably the most straightforward and intuitive way to verify its impact on the research community. Aiming to help researchers in this scenario, we present a review of the top-100 most cited papers in this field of investigation according to the Google Scholar search engine. We evaluate the distribution of the top-100 papers taking into account some important aspects, such as the type of medical imaging explored, learning settings, segmentation strategy, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and finally, the dataset and code availability.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) signal describes the heart’s electrical activity, allowing it to detect several health conditions, including cardiac system abnormalities and dysfunctions. Nowadays, most patient medical records are still paper-based, especially those made in past decades. The importance of collecting digitized ECGs is twofold: firstly, all medical applications can be easily implemented with an engineering approach if the ECGs are treated as signals; secondly, paper ECGs can deteriorate over time, therefore a correct evaluation of the patient’s clinical evolution is not always guaranteed. The goal of this paper is the realization of an automatic conversion algorithm from paper-based ECGs (images) to digital ECG signals. The algorithm involves a digitization process tested on an image set of 16 subjects, also with pathologies. The quantitative analysis of the digitization method is carried out by evaluating the repeatability and reproducibility of the algorithm. The digitization accuracy is evaluated both on the entire signal and on six ECG time parameters (R-R peak distance, QRS complex duration, QT interval, PQ interval, P-wave duration, and heart rate). Results demonstrate the algorithm efficiency has an average Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.94 and measurement errors of the ECG time parameters are always less than 1 mm. Due to the promising experimental results, the algorithm could be embedded into a graphical interface, becoming a measurement and collection tool for cardiologists.

In industrial paper production, online monitoring of a range of quality parameters is essential for ensuring that the performance and appearance of the final product is suitable for a given application. In this article, two optical sensing techniques are investigated for non-destructive, non-contact characterization of paper thickness, surface roughness, and production defects. The first technique is optical coherence tomography based on a mid-infrared supercontinuum laser, which can cover thicknesses from ~20–90 μm and provide information about the surface finish. Detection of subsurface voids, cuts, and oil contamination was also demonstrated. The second technique is terahertz time domain spectroscopy, which is used to measure paper thicknesses of up to 443 μm. A proof-of-concept thickness measurement in freely suspended paper was also demonstrated. These demonstrations highlight the added functionality and potential of tomographic optical sensing methods towards industrial non-contact quality monitoring.

The study relates to the use of automated plant protection systems in agriculture. The article presents a proprietary automated mobile platform with an aerosol generator of hot mist. Furthermore, the cause of the loss of a chemical preparation in the spraying of plant protection products on the tree crown was determined in the course of field research. A statistical analysis of the results of experiment was carried out and the effect of droplet size on leaf coating density was determined. The manuscript presents a diagram of the degree of penetration of the working solution as it drops into the crown of the tree, as well as a cross-sectional graph of the permeability of the spray from the projection of the fruit tree crown. The most effective modes of operation of the automated mobile platform for spraying plant protection products with a mist generator aggregate were established. Analysis of the results shows that the device meets the spraying requirements of the procedure for spraying plant protection products. The novelty of this research lies in the optimal modes identified by movement of the developed automated mobile platform and the parameters of plant treatment with protective equipment when using a hot mist generator. The following mode parameters were established: the speed of the automated platform was 3.4 km/h, the distance to the crown of the tree was 1.34 m, and the flow rate of the working fluid was 44.1 L/h. Average fuel consumption was 2.5 L/h. Effective aerosol penetration reduced the amount of working fluid used by up to 50 times.

Deep Learning (DL) has provided a significant breakthrough in many areas of research and industry. The development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has enabled the improvement of computer vision-based techniques, making the information gathered from cameras more useful. For this reason, recently, studies have been carried out on the use of image-based DL in some areas of people’s daily life. In this paper, an object detection-based algorithm is proposed to modify and improve the user experience in relation to the use of cooking appliances. The algorithm can sense common kitchen objects and identify interesting situations for users. Some of these situations are the detection of utensils on lit hobs, recognition of boiling, smoking and oil in kitchenware, and determination of good cookware size adjustment, among others. In addition, the authors have achieved sensor fusion by using a cooker hob with Bluetooth connectivity, so it is possible to automatically interact with it via an external device such as a computer or a mobile phone. Our main contribution focuses on supporting people when they are cooking, controlling heaters, or alerting them with different types of alarms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a YOLO algorithm has been used to control the cooktop by means of visual sensorization. Moreover, this research paper provides a comparison of the detection performance among different YOLO networks. Additionally, a dataset of more than 7500 images has been generated and multiple data augmentation techniques have been compared. The results show that YOLOv5s can successfully detect common kitchen objects with high accuracy and fast speed, and it can be employed for realistic cooking environment applications. Finally, multiple examples of the identification of interesting situations and how we act on the cooktop are presented. Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on cheap hardware and the easy-to-use software Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Nowadays, because of its open-source nature and its simple and accessible user experience, Arduino is ubiquitous and used among hobbyist and novice programmers for Do It Yourself (DIY) projects, especially in the Internet of Things (IoT) domain. Unfortunately, such diffusion comes with a price. Many developers start working on this platform without having a deep knowledge of the leading security concepts in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Their applications, often publicly available on GitHub (or other code-sharing platforms), can be taken as examples by other developers or downloaded and used by non-expert users, spreading these issues in other projects. For these reasons, this paper aims at understanding the current landscape by analyzing a set of open-source DIY IoT projects and looking for potential security issues. Furthermore, the paper classifies those issues according to the proper security category. This study’s results offer a deeper understanding of the security concerns in Arduino projects created by hobbyist programmers and the dangers that may be faced by those who use these projects.

The overwhelming popularity of technology-based solutions and innovations to address day-to-day processes has significantly contributed to the emergence of smart cities. where millions of interconnected devices and sensors generate and share huge volumes of data. The easy and high availability of rich personal and public data generated in these digitalized and automated ecosystems renders smart cities vulnerable to intrinsic and extrinsic security breaches. Today, with fast-developing technologies, the classical username and password approaches are no longer adequate to secure valuable data and information from cyberattacks. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) can provide an effective solution to minimize the security challenges associated with legacy single-factor authentication systems (both online and offline). This paper identifies and discusses the role and need of MFA for securing the smart city ecosystem. The paper begins by describing the notion of smart cities and the associated security threats and privacy issues. The paper further provides a detailed description of how MFA can be used for securing various smart city entities and services. A new concept of blockchain-based multi-factor authentication named “BAuth-ZKP” for securing smart city transactions is presented in the paper. The concept focuses on developing smart contracts between the participating entities within the smart city and performing the transactions with zero knowledge proof (ZKP)-based authentication in a secure and privacy-preserved manner. Finally, the future prospects, developments, and scope of using MFA in smart city ecosystem are discussed.

Video delivered over IP networks in real-time applications, which utilize RTP protocol over unreliable UDP such as videotelephony or live-streaming, is often prone to degradation caused by multiple sources. The most significant is the combined effect of video compression and its transmission over the communication channel. This paper analyzes the adverse impact of packet loss on video quality encoded with various combinations of compression parameters and resolutions. For the purposes of the research, a dataset containing 11,200 full HD and ultra HD video sequences encoded to H.264 and H.265 formats at five bit rates was compiled with a simulated packet loss rate (PLR) ranging from 0 to 1%. Objective assessment was conducted by using peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) metrics, whereas the well-known absolute category rating (ACR) was used for subjective evaluation. Analysis of the results confirmed the presumption that video quality decreases along with the rise of packet loss rate, regardless of compression parameters. The experiments further led to a finding that the quality of sequences affected by PLR declines with increasing bit rate. Additionally, the paper includes recommendations of compression parameters for use under various network conditions.

In this paper, we propose new three-dimensional (3D) visualization of objects at long distance under photon-starved conditions. In conventional three-dimensional image visualization techniques, the visual quality of three-dimensional images may be degraded because object images at long distances may have low resolution. Thus, in our proposed method, we utilize digital zooming, which can crop and interpolate the region of interest from the image to improve the visual quality of three-dimensional images at long distances. Under photon-starved conditions, three-dimensional images at long distances may not be visualized due to the lack of the number of photons. Photon counting integral imaging can be used to solve this problem, but objects at long distance may still have a small number of photons. In our method, a three-dimensional image can be reconstructed, since photon counting integral imaging with digital zooming is used. In addition, to estimate a more accurate three-dimensional image at long distance under photon-starved conditions, in this paper, multiple observation photon counting integral imaging (i.e., N observation photon counting integral imaging) is used. To show the feasibility of our proposed method, we implement the optical experiments and calculate performance metrics, such as peak sidelobe ratio. Therefore, our method can improve the visualization of three-dimensional objects at long distances under photon-starved conditions.

Aiming at the problems of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) observation errors and inaccurate kinematic model in ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, this paper proposed an improved robust adaptive cubature Kalman filter (IRACKF). Robust and adaptive filtering can weaken the influence of observed outliers and kinematic model errors on filtering, respectively. However, their application conditions are different, and improper use may reduce positioning accuracy. Therefore, this paper designed a sliding window recognition scheme based on polynomial fitting, which can process the observation data in real-time to identify error types. Simulation and experimental results indicate that compared to the robust CKF, adaptive CKF, and robust adaptive CKF, the IRACKF algorithm reduces the position error by 38.0%, 45.1%, and 25.3%, respectively. The proposed IRACKF algorithm significantly improves the positioning accuracy and stability of the UWB system.

The advent of digitization has brought about new technologies that enable advanced condition monitoring and fault diagnosis under the Industry 4.0 paradigm. While vibration signal analysis is a commonly used method for fault detection in literature, it often involves the use of expensive equipment in difficult-to-reach locations. This paper presents a solution for fault diagnosis of electrical machines by utilizing machine learning techniques on the edge, classifying information coming from motor current signature analysis (MCSA) for broken rotor bar detection. The paper covers the process of feature extraction, classification, and model training and testing for three different machine learning methods using a public dataset to then export the results to diagnose a different machine. An edge computing approach is adopted for the data acquisition, signal processing and model implementation on an affordable platform, the Arduino. This makes it accessible for small and medium-sized companies, albeit with the limitations of a resource-constrained platform. The proposed solution has been tested on electrical machines in the Mining and Industrial Engineering School of Almadén (UCLM) with positive results.

This paper contains the design of active optical lenses used for the detection of arc flashing emissions. The phenomenon of an arc flashing emission and its characteristics were contemplated. Methods of preventing these emissions in electric power systems were discussed as well. The article also includes a comparison of commercially available detectors. An analysis of the material properties of fluorescent optical fiber UV-VIS-detecting sensors constitutes a major part of the paper. The main purpose of the work was to make an active lens using photoluminescent materials, which can convert ultraviolet radiation into visible light. As part of the work, active lenses with materials such as Poly(methyl 2-methylpropenoate) (PMMA) and phosphate glass doped with lanthanides, such as terbium (Tb3+) and europium (Eu3+) ions, were analyzed. These lenses were used to make optical sensors, which were supported by commercially available sensors in their construction.

How to predict precipitation accurately and efficiently is the key and difficult problem in the field of weather forecasting. At present, we can obtain accurate meteorological data through many high-precision weather sensors and use them to forecast precipitation. However, the common numerical weather forecasting methods and radar echo extrapolation methods have insurmountable defects. Based on some common characteristics of meteorological data, this paper proposes a Pred-SF model for precipitation prediction in target areas. The model focuses on the combination of multiple meteorological modal data to carry out self-cyclic prediction and a step-by-step prediction structure. The model divides the precipitation prediction into two steps. In the first step, the spatial encoding structure and PredRNN-V2 network are used to construct the autoregressive spatio-temporal prediction network for the multi-modal data, and the preliminary predicted value of the multi-modal data is generated frame by frame. In the second step, the spatial information fusion network is used to further extract and fuse the spatial characteristics of the preliminary predicted value and, finally, output the predicted precipitation value of the target region. In this paper, ERA5 multi-meteorological mode data and GPM precipitation measurement data are used for testing to predict the continuous precipitation of a specific area for 4 h. The experimental results show that Pred-SF has strong precipitation prediction ability. Some comparative experiments were also set up for comparison to demonstrate the advantages of the combined prediction method of multi-modal data and the stepwise prediction method of Pred-SF.

Reflective phenomena often occur in the detecting process of pointer meters by inspection robots in complex environments, which can cause the failure of pointer meter readings. In this paper, an improved k-means clustering method for adaptive detection of pointer meter reflective areas and a robot pose control strategy to remove reflective areas are proposed based on deep learning. It mainly includes three steps: (1) YOLOv5s (You Only Look Once v5-small) deep learning network is used for real-time detection of pointer meters. The detected reflective pointer meters are preprocessed by using a perspective transformation. Then, the detection results and deep learning algorithm are combined with the perspective transformation. (2) Based on YUV (luminance-bandwidth-chrominance) color spatial information of collected pointer meter images, the fitting curve of the brightness component histogram and its peak and valley information is obtained. Then, the k-means algorithm is improved based on this information to adaptively determine its optimal clustering number and its initial clustering center. In addition, the reflection detection of pointer meter images is carried out based on the improved k-means clustering algorithm. (3) The robot pose control strategy, including its moving direction and distance, can be determined to eliminate the reflective areas. Finally, an inspection robot detection platform is built for experimental study on the performance of the proposed detection method. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only has good detection accuracy that achieves 0.809 but also has the shortest detection time, which is only 0.6392 s compared with other methods available in the literature. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a theoretical and technical reference to avoid circumferential reflection for inspection robots. It can adaptively and accurately detect reflective areas of pointer meters and can quickly remove them by controlling the movement of inspection robots. The proposed detection method has the potential application to realize real-time reflection detection and recognition of pointer meters for inspection robots in complex environments.

In this context, optical point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connectivity is seen as an alternative to provide connectivity to multiple sites from a single source, thus potentially both reducing CAPEX and OPEX. Digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) has been shown as a feasible candidate for optical P2MP in view of its ability to generate multiple subcarriers (SC) in the frequency domain that can be used to serve several destinations. This paper proposes a different technology, named optical constellation slicing (OCS), that enables a source to communicate with multiple destinations by focusing on the time domain. OCS is described in detail and compared to DSCM by simulation, where the results show that both OCS and DSCM provide a good performance in terms of the bit error rate (BER) for access/metro applications. An exhaustive quantitative study is afterwards carried out to compare OCS and DSCM considering its support to dynamic packet layer P2P traffic only and mixed P2P and P2MP traffic; throughput, efficiency, and cost are used here as the metrics. As a baseline for comparison, the traditional optical P2P solution is also considered in this study. Numerical results show that OCS and DSCM provide a better efficiency and cost savings than traditional optical P2P connectivity. For P2P only traffic, OCS and DSCM are utmost 14.6% more efficient than the traditional lightpath solution, whereas for heterogeneous P2P + P2MP traffic, a 25% efficiency improvement is achieved, making OCS 12% more efficient than DSCM. Interestingly, the results show that for P2P only traffic, DSCM provides more savings of up to 12% than OCS, whereas for heterogeneous traffic, OCS can save up to 24.6% more than DSCM. The importance of panoramic traffic perception tasks in autonomous driving is increasing, so shared networks with high accuracy are becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we propose a multi-task shared sensing network, called CenterPNets, that can perform the three major detection tasks of target detection, driving area segmentation, and lane detection in traffic sensing in one go and propose several key optimizations to improve the overall detection performance. First, this paper proposes an efficient detection head and segmentation head based on a shared path aggregation network to improve the overall reuse rate of CenterPNets and an efficient multi-task joint training loss function to optimize the model. Secondly, the detection head branch uses an anchor-free frame mechanism to automatically regress target location information to improve the inference speed of the model. Finally, the split-head branch fuses deep multi-scale features with shallow fine-grained features, ensuring that the extracted features are rich in detail. CenterPNets achieves an average detection accuracy of 75.8% on the publicly available large-scale Berkeley DeepDrive dataset, with an intersection ratio of 92.8% and 32.1% for driveableareas and lane areas, respectively. Therefore, CenterPNets is a precise and effective solution to the multi-tasking detection issue.

In-bed posture monitoring has become a prevalent area of research to help minimize the risk of pressure sore development and to increase sleep quality. This paper proposed 2D and 3D Convolutional Neural Networks, which are trained on images and videos of an open-access dataset consisting of 13 subjects’ body heat maps captured from a pressure mat in 17 positions, respectively. The main goal of this paper is to detect the three main body positions: supine, left, and right. We compare the use of image and video data through 2D and 3D models in our classification. Since the dataset was imbalanced, three strategies were evaluated, i.e., down sampling, over sampling, and class weights. The best 3D model achieved accuracies of 98.90 ± 1.05% and 97.80 ± 2.14% for 5-fold and leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross validations, respectively. To compare the 3D model with 2D, four pre-trained 2D models were evaluated, where the best-performing model was the ResNet-18 with accuracies of 99.97 ± 0.03% for 5-fold and 99.62 ± 0.37% for LOSO. The proposed 2D and 3D models provided promising results for in-bed posture recognition and can be used in the future to further distinguish postures into more detailed subclasses. The outcome of this study can be used to remind caregivers at hospitals and long-term care facilitiesto reposition their patients if they do not reposition themselves naturally to prevent pressure ulcers. In addition, the evaluation of body postures and movements during sleep can help caregivers understand sleep quality.

In this research paper, the spatial distributions of five different services—Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Video Conferencing (VC), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and Electronic Mail—are investigated using three different approaches: circular, random, and uniform approaches. The amount of each service varies from one to another. In certain distinct settings, which are collectively referred to as mixed applications, a variety of services are activated and configured at predetermined percentages. These services run simultaneously. Furthermore, this paper has established a new algorithm to assess both the real-time and best-effort services of the various IEEE 802.11 technologies, describing the best networking architecture as either a Basic Service Set (BSS), an Extended Service Set (ESS), or an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS). Due to this fact, the purpose of our research is to provide the user or client with an analysis that suggests a suitable technology and network configuration without wasting resources on unnecessary technologies or requiring a complete re-setup. In this context, this paper presents a network prioritization framework for enabling smart environments to determine an appropriate WLAN standard or a combination of standards that best supports a specific set of smart network applications in a specified environment. A network QoS modeling technique for smart services has been derived for assessing best-effort HTTP and FTP, and the real-time performance of VoIP and VC services enabled via IEEE 802.11 protocols in order to discover more optimal network architecture. A number of IEEE 802.11 technologies have been ranked by using the proposed network optimization technique with separate case studies for the circular, random, and uniform geographical distributions of smart services. The performance of the proposed framework is validated using a realistic smart environment simulation setting, considering both real-time and best-effort services as case studies with a range of metrics related to smart environments.

Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), based on sensors, can only be reliable if the data used to extract information are also reliable. Industrial metrology plays a major role in ensuring the quality of the data collected by the sensors. To guarantee that the values collected by the sensors are reliable, it is necessary to have metrological traceability made by successive calibrations from higher standards to the sensors used in the factories. To ensure the reliability of the data, a calibration strategy must be put in place. Usually, sensors are only calibrated on a periodic basis; so, they often go for calibration without it being necessary or collect data inaccurately. In addition, the sensors are checked often, increasing the need for manpower, and sensor errors are frequently overlooked when the redundant sensor has a drift in the same direction. It is necessary to acquire a calibration strategy based on the sensor condition. Through online monitoring of sensor calibration status (OLM), it is possible to perform calibrations only when it is really necessary. To reach this end, this paper aims to provide a strategy to classify the health status of the production equipment and of the reading equipment that uses the same dataset. A measurement signal from four sensors was simulated, for which Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with unsupervised algorithms were used. This paper demonstrates how, through the same dataset, it is possible to obtain distinct information. Because of this, we have a very important feature creation process, followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), K-means clustering, and classification based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM). Through three hidden states of the HMM, which represent the health states of the production equipment, we will first detect, through correlations, the features of its status. After that, an HMM filter is used to eliminate those errors from the original signal. Next, an equal methodology is conducted for each sensor individually and using statistical features in the time domain where we can obtain, through HMM, the failures of each sensor.

In this paper, we propose a lensless three-dimensional (3D) imaging under photon-starved conditions using diffraction grating and computational photon counting method. In conventional 3D imaging with and without the lens, 3D visualization of objects under photon-starved conditions may be difficult due to lack of photons. To solve this problem, our proposed method uses diffraction grating imaging as lensless 3D imaging and computational photon counting method for 3D visualization of objects under these conditions. In addition, to improve the visual quality of 3D images under severely photon-starved conditions, in this paper, multiple observation photon counting method with advanced statistical estimation such as Bayesian estimation is proposed. Multiple observation photon counting method can estimate the more accurate 3D images by remedying the random errors of photon occurrence because it can increase the samples of photons. To prove the ability of our proposed method, we implement the optical experiments and calculate the peak sidelobe ratio as the performance metric.

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is a powerful technology that is widely used to gather data and monitor the actual environment for analysis. Furthermore, multimedia applications’ needs and the features, such as constrained latency and high bandwidth consumption, complicate the design of WMSN routing protocols. Despite several methods, the trouble of designing WMSNs routing protocol remains a hurdle. The miniaturization and enhancement of hardware facilitate an extensive range of applications in the military and public sectors. On the contrary, the streaming of multimedia content is captured and generated due to some event-triggered surveillance for a long duration of time. Hence, it is necessary for wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN) to provide a strong hardware foundation, thereby satisfying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Initially, the network is clustered into several clusters and the nodes with rich resources are chosen as cluster heads. The significant intention of this paper is to eliminate data redundancy and to select optimal cluster heads, thereby minimizing the energy consumption. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Fuzzy Criminal Search Ebola Optimization (FCSEO) algorithm for optimal selection of cluster heads. In addition to this, the data redundancy present in the proposed algorithm is mitigated and thus the network lifetime is enhanced. Finally, extensive experimentation is carried out for various performance measures to determine the efficiency of the proposed approach.

The Timepix3 readout ASIC chip is a hybrid pixelated radiation detector, designed at CERN, which contains a 256 px × 256 px matrix. Each of the 65,536 radiation-sensitive pixels can record an incoming particle, its energy deposition or time of arrival and measure them simultaneously. Since the detector is suitable for a wide range of applications from particle physics, national security and medicine to space science, it can be used in a wide range of temperatures. Until now, it has to be calibrated every time to the operating point of the application. This paper studies the possibility of energy measurement with Timepix3 equipped with a 500m thick silicon sensor and MiniPIX readout interface in the temperatures between 10∘C and 70∘C with only one calibration. The detector has been irradiated by X-ray fluorescence photons in the energy range from 8 keV to 57 keV, and 31 keV to 81 keV photons from the 133Ba radioactive source. A deviation of 5% in apparent energy value may occur for a 10∘C change in temperature from the reference point, but, with the next temperature change, it can reach up to −30%. Moreover, Barium photons with an energy of 81 keV appear as deposited energy of only 55 keV at a detector temperature of 70∘C. An original compensation method that reduces the relative measurement error from −30% to less than 1% is presented in this paper.

The prevalence of internet usage leads to diverse internet traffic, which may contain information about various types of internet attacks. In recent years, many researchers have applied deep learning technology to intrusion detection systems and obtained fairly strong recognition results. However, most experiments have used old datasets, so they could not reflect the latest attack information. In this paper, a current state of the CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset and standard evaluation metrics has been employed to evaluate the proposed mechanism. After preprocessing the dataset, six models—deep neural network (DNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), CNN + RNN and CNN + LSTM—were constructed to judge whether network traffic comprised a malicious attack. In addition, multi-classification experiments were conducted to sort traffic into benign traffic and six categories of malicious attacks: BruteForce, Denial-of-service (DoS), Web Attacks, Infiltration, Botnet, and Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS). Each model showed a high accuracy in various experiments, and their multi-class classification accuracy were above 98%. Compared with the intrusion detection system (IDS) of other papers, the proposed model effectively improves the detection performance. Moreover, the inference time for the combinations of CNN + RNN and CNN + LSTM is longer than that of the individual DNN, RNN and CNN. Therefore, the DNN, RNN and CNN are better than CNN + RNN and CNN + LSTM for considering the implementation of the algorithm in the IDS device.

Adaptation of handover parameters in ultra-dense networks has always been one of the key issues in optimizing network performance. Aiming at the optimization goal of effective handover ratio, this paper proposes a deep Q-learning (DQN) method that dynamically selects handover parameters according to wireless signal fading conditions. This approach seeks good backward compatibility. In order to enhance the efficiency and performance of the DQN method, Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) is used to build a digital twin and assist the DQN algorithm to achieve a more efficient search. Simulation experiments prove that the enhanced method has a faster convergence speed than the ordinary DQN method, and at the same time, achieves an average effective handover ratio increase of 2.7%. Moreover, in different wireless signal fading intervals, the method proposed in this paper has achieved better performance.

At present, some studies have combined federated learning with blockchain, so that participants can conduct federated learning tasks under decentralized conditions, sharing and aggregating model parameters. However, these schemes do not take into account the trusted supervision of federated learning and the case of malicious node attacks. This paper introduces the concept of a trusted computing sandbox to solve this problem. A federated learning multi-task scheduling mechanism based on a trusted computing sandbox is designed and a decentralized trusted computing sandbox composed of computing resources provided by each participant is constructed as a state channel. The training process of the model is carried out in the channel and the malicious behavior is supervised by the smart contract, ensuring the data privacy of the participant node and the reliability of the calculation during the training process. In addition, considering the resource heterogeneity of participant nodes, the deep reinforcement learning method was used in this paper to solve the resource scheduling optimization problem in the process of constructing the state channel. The proposed algorithm aims to minimize the completion time of the system and improve the efficiency of the system while meeting the requirements of tasks on service quality as much as possible. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the traditional heuristic algorithm and meta-heuristic algorithm.

Navigation in large hospitals remains a challenge, especially for patients, visitors and, in some cases, for staff, but in particular it is notable in the case of tracking ambulatory equipment. Current techniques generally seek to reproduce what outdoor navigation systems provide, i.e., “good” accuracy. In many cases, especially in hospitals, reliability is much more important than accuracy. We show that it is possible to realize a simple, reliable system with a low accuracy, but which perfectly fulfills the task assigned in the particular case of tracking stretchers. Optimizing the use of hospital equipment requires the knowledge of its movement. The possibility to access equipment location in real time as well as on the knowledge of the time necessary to move it between two locations allows to predict or to estimate the load and possibly to scale the necessary number of stretchers, and thus the availability of the stretcher bearers. In this paper, an approach of the real-time location of these devices is proposed, and it is called “symbolic”. The principle is described, as well as the practical implementation and the data that can be retrieved. In the second part, an analysis of the results obtained is provided in two directions: the location of stretchers and the determination of travel times. The methodology followed is described, and it is shown that a correct positioning rate of 90% is reached, which is slightly lower than expected, explained by the chosen practical implementation. Moreover, the average error on the determination of travel times is approximately ten seconds on 2 to 7 min trips. The “reliability” (the terminology of which is discussed at the end of the paper) of the results is related to the simplicity of the approach.

The Taiyuan Xishan Ecological Restoration Zone is located in the west of Taiyuan City and belongs to the Xishan Coalfield. Due to the resource development activity of coal mining, which is caused by coal gangue accumulation, surface vegetation degradation, bare surfaces, and other phenomena, it is most common in this area. These have an impact on the surface ecology; however, after ecological restoration, the surface ecology has been greatly improved. There are many extraction models of vegetation coverage based on pixel dichotomology combined with multispectral vegetation index, but we believe that the combination of visible light vegetation index to construct models is relatively unexplored. The main problem of how to use the RGB image data in order to quickly and accurately extract vegetation coverage information is still under investigation and needs researchers’ attention. In this paper, through selecting the vegetation coverage as the evaluation index of ecological restoration effect, a new RGB vegetation coverage CIVE calculation model is innovatively proposed to solve the above problem, and on the basis of this model, the vegetation cover change analysis is carried out in the Xishan ecological restoration area of Taiyuan. According to the analysis of vegetation coverage change, relevant paper data, and the characteristics of multiple historical remote sensing images, the ecological restoration area of Taiyuan Xishan is divided into six typical areas. Through empirical evaluation, we summarize and analyze these six typical areas, which can provide typical demonstration roles for other ecological restoration areas. Our findings suggest that the proposed CIVE model realizes the extraction of vegetation cover information and long-term series dynamic monitoring of vegetation coverage.

This paper aims at proposing an augmented sensing method for estimating volumetric water content (VWC) in soil for Internet of Underground Things (IoUT) applications. The system exploits an IoUT sensor node embedding a low-cost, low-precision soil moisture sensor and a long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN) transceiver sending relative measurements within LoRaWAN packets. The VWC estimation is achieved by means of machine learning (ML) algorithms combining the readings provided by the soil moisture sensor with the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values measured at the LoRaWAN gateway side during broadcasting. A dataset containing such measurements was especially collected in the laboratory by burying the IoUT sensor node within a plastic case filled with sand, while several VWCs were artificially created by progressively adding water. The adopted ML algorithms are trained and tested using three different techniques for estimating VWC. Firstly, the low-cost, low-precision soil moisture sensor is calibrated by resorting to an ML model exploiting only its raw readings to estimate VWC. Secondly, a virtual VWC sensor is shown, where no real sensor readings are used because only LoRaWAN RSSIs are exploited. Lastly, an augmented VWC sensing method relying on the combination of RSSIs and soil moisture sensor readings is presented. The findings of this paper demonstrate that the augmented sensor outperforms both the virtual sensor and the calibrated real soil moisture sensor. The latter provides a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.33%, a virtual sensor of 8.67%, and an augmented sensor of 1.84%, which improves down to 1.53% if filtered in post-processing.

The combination of LiDAR with other technologies for numerisation is increasingly applied in the field of building, design, and geoscience, as it often brings time and cost advantages in 3D data survey processes. In this paper, the reconstruction of 3D point cloud datasets is studied, through an experimental protocol evaluation of new LiDAR sensors on smartphones. To evaluate and analyse the 3D point cloud datasets, different experimental conditions are considered depending on the acquisition mode and the type of object or surface being scanned. The conditions allowing us to obtain the most accurate data are identified and used to propose which acquisition protocol to use. This protocol seems to be the most adapted when using these LiDAR sensors to digitise complex interior buildings such as railway stations. This paper aims to propose: (i) a methodology to suggest the adaptation of an experimental protocol based on factors (distance, luminosity, surface, time, and incidence) to assess the precision and accuracy of the smartphone LiDAR sensor in a controlled environment; (ii) a comparison, both qualitative and quantitative, of smartphone LiDAR data with other traditional 3D scanner alternatives (Faro X130, VLX, and Vz400i) while considering three representative building interior environments; and (iii) a discussion of the results obtained in a controlled and a field environment, making it possible to propose recommendations for the use of the LiDAR smartphone at the end of the numerisation of the interior space of a building.

With the rise of robotics within various fields, there has been a significant development in the use of mobile robots. For mobile robots performing unmanned delivery tasks, autonomous robot navigation based on complex environments is particularly important. In this paper, an improved Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO)-based algorithm is proposed to realize the autonomous path planning of mobile robots in complex scenarios. First, the strategy for generating the initial wolf pack of the GWO algorithm is modified by introducing a two-dimensional Tent–Sine coupled chaotic mapping in this paper. This guarantees that the GWO algorithm generates the initial population diversity while improving the randomness between the two-dimensional state variables of the path nodes. Second, by introducing the opposition-based learning method based on the elite strategy, the adaptive nonlinear inertia weight strategy and random wandering law of the Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA), this paper improves the defects of slow convergence speed, low accuracy, and imbalance between global exploration and local mining functions of the GWO algorithm in dealing with high-dimensional complex problems. In this paper, the improved algorithm is named as an EWB-GWO algorithm, where EWB is the abbreviation of three strategies. Finally, this paper enhances the rationalization of the initial population generation of the EWB-GWO algorithm based on the visual-field line detection technique of Bresenham’s line algorithm, reduces the number of iterations of the EWB-GWO algorithm, and decreases the time complexity of the algorithm in dealing with the path planning problem. The simulation results show that the EWB-GWO algorithm is very competitive among metaheuristics of the same type. It also achieves optimal path length measures and smoothness metrics in the path planning experiments.

Selecting the best planting area for blueberries is an essential issue in agriculture. To better improve the effectiveness of blueberry cultivation, a machine learning-based classification model for blueberry ecological suitability was proposed for the first time and its validation was conducted by using multi-source environmental features data in this paper. The sparrow search algorithm (SSA) was adopted to optimize the CatBoost model and classify the ecological suitability of blueberries based on the selection of data features. Firstly, the Borderline-SMOTE algorithm was used to balance the number of positive and negative samples. The Variance Inflation Factor and information gain methods were applied to filter out the factors affecting the growth of blueberries. Subsequently, the processed data were fed into the CatBoost for training, and the parameters of the CatBoost were optimized to obtain the optimal model using SSA. Finally, the SSA-CatBoost model was adopted to classify the ecological suitability of blueberries and output the suitability types. Taking a study on a blueberry plantation in Majiang County, Guizhou Province, China as an example, the findings demonstrate that the AUC value of the SSA-CatBoost-based blueberry ecological suitability model is 0.921, which is 2.68% higher than that of the CatBoost (AUC = 0.897) and is significantly higher than Logistic Regression (AUC = 0.855), Support Vector Machine (AUC = 0.864), and Random Forest (AUC = 0.875). Furthermore, the ecological suitability of blueberries in Majiang County is mapped according to the classification results of different models. When comparing the actual blueberry cultivation situation in Majiang County, the classification results of the SSA-CatBoost model proposed in this paper matches best with the real blueberry cultivation situation in Majiang County, which is of a high reference value for the selection of blueberry cultivation sites.

Aiming at the problem of low control accuracy caused by nonlinear disturbances in the operation of the PLS-160 wheel–rail adhesion test rig, a linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) suitable for the wheel–rail adhesion test rig was designed. The influence of nonlinear disturbances during the operation of the test rig on the control accuracy was analyzed based on SIMPACK. The SIMAT co-simulation platform was established to verify the control performance of the LADRC designed in this paper. The simulation results show that the speed and creepage errors of the test rig under the control of the LADRC met the adhesion test technical indicators under four different conditions. Compared with the traditional PID controller, the creepage overshoot and response time with the LADRC were reduced by 1.27% and 60%, respectively, under the constant creepage condition, and the stability recovery time was shorter under the condition of a sudden decrease in the adhesion coefficient. The LADRC designed in this paper shows better dynamic and anti-interference performance; therefore, it is more suitable for a follow-up study of the PLS-160 wheel–rail adhesion test rig.

Laser displacement sensors are widely used in the aviation industry for the purpose of surface normal measurements. The measurement of a surface normal depends on prior knowledge of the poses and positions of the sensors, which are obtained through calibration. This paper introduces a new parameter to the traditional calibration procedure, to reduce the calibration error, and explores the factors affecting calibration using the Monte Carlo method. In the experiment, the normal measurement error of the probe consisted of four sensors after calibration was less than 0.1∘, which satisfied the established requirements. This paper indicates the boundary conditions for a successful calibration and validates the proposed method, which provides a new method for the pose and position calibration of laser displacement sensors and other similar sensors.

The paper considers non-destructive testing (NTDs) as a means to solve the flaw detection problems of magnetic products. It proposes a new probe-coil magnetic-field NDT, not requiring the pre-magnetization of the test object material, which is mandatory for all conventional magnetic flaw detection techniques. A new bifactor excitation of the fluxgate sensor’s sensitive element, based on double μ-transformation through the simultaneous activation of magnetic-modulating and electromagnetic-acoustic effects, is theoretically justified. The physical processes underlying the proposed technique are considered in detail, and a scheme for its practical implementation is described. The authors provide a variant of the new fluxgate’s original design, implementing the proposed excitation technique. The specifics of implementing the fluxgate operating modes are analyzed, testifying to the possibility of detecting a given class of flaws with the required coverage as well as ensuring the required diagnostic resolution during flaw detection, which, in fact, indicates a more reliable identification of both the flaw type and location. Herewith, the new fluxgate type features the advantages of improved functionality and lower cost due to its simple design. The paper also considers a method to experimentally study the capabilities of the proposed fluxgate sensor with a new bifactor excitation in detail. The results of the experimental study into its key specifications are provided, confirming its high resolution, narrower zone of uncertainty, and the possibility of detecting smaller flaws at greater depths compared to available analogs.

In this paper, an experimental analysis of the quality of electrical insulating oils is performed using a combination of dielectric loss and capacitance measurement tests. The transformer oil corresponds to a fresh oil sample. The paper follows the ASTM D 924-15 standard (standard test method for dissipation factor and relative permittivity of electrical insulating liquids). Effective electrical parameters, including the tan δ of the oil, were obtained in this non-destructive test. Subsequently, a numerical method is proposed to accurately determine the effective electrical resistivity, σ, and effective electrical permittivity, ε, of an insulating mineral oil from the data obtained in the experimental analysis. These two parameters are not obtained in the ASTM standard. We used the cell method and the multi-objective non-dominated sorting in genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) for this purpose. In this paper, a new numerical tool to accurately obtain the effective electrical parameters of transformer insulating oils is therefore provided for fault detection and diagnosis. The results show improved accuracy compared to the existing analytical equations. In addition, as the experimental data are collected in a high-voltage domain, wireless sensors are used to measure, transmit, and monitor the electrical and thermal quantities.

The deregulation process of the electricity sector has led to competition in wholesale and retail markets. In particular, retailers submit bids to wholesale markets to satisfy the energy needs associated with portfolios of end-use customers. This paper describes a strategic process for retailers bidding in a wholesale market composed of a day-ahead market, an intraday market, and a balancing market. It considers a market design that involves a hybrid model for the intraday market, based on daily auctions and a continuous procedure. The paper also presents a computational study to illustrate and test both the market design and the strategic bidding process of retailers. In recent times, fractional calculus has gained popularity in various types of engineering applications. Very often, the mathematical model describing a given phenomenon consists of a differential equation with a fractional derivative. As numerous studies present, the use of the fractional derivative instead of the classical derivative allows for more accurate modeling of some processes. A numerical solution of anomalous heat conduction equation with Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative over space is presented in this paper. First, a differential scheme is provided to solve the direct problem. Then, the inverse problem is considered, which consists in identifying model parameters such as: thermal conductivity, order of derivative and heat transfer. Data on the basis of which the inverse problem is solved are the temperature values on the right boundary of the considered space. To solve the problem a functional describing the error of the solution is created. By determining the minimum of this functional, unknown parameters of the model are identified. In order to find a solution, selected heuristic algorithms are presented and compared. The following meta-heuristic algorithms are described and used in the paper: Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for continous function, Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA), Dynamic Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (DBOA) and Aquila Optimize (AO). The accuracy of the presented algorithms is illustrated by examples.

The secure operation of smart grids is closely linked to state estimates that accurately reflect the physical characteristics of the grid. However, well-designed false data injection attacks (FDIAs) can manipulate the process of state estimation by injecting malicious data into the measurement data while bypassing the detection of the security system, ultimately causing the results of state estimation to deviate from secure values. Since FDIAs tampering with the measurement data of some buses will lead to error offset, this paper proposes an attack-detection algorithm based on statistical learning according to the different characteristic parameters of measurement error before and after tampering. In order to detect and classify false data from the measurement data, in this paper, we report the model establishment and estimation of error parameters for the tampered measurement data by combining the the k-means++ algorithm with the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. At the same time, we located and recorded the bus that the attacker attempted to tamper with. In order to verify the feasibility of the algorithm proposed in this paper, the IEEE 5-bus standard test system and the IEEE 14-bus standard test system were used for simulation analysis. Numerical examples demonstrate that the combined use of the two algorithms can decrease the detection time to less than 0.011883 s and correctly locate the false data with a probability of more than 95%.

Accurate and fast measurements are important in many areas of everyday engineering and research activities. This paper proposes a method that gives such measurements, additionally shortening the time in which they are obtained. To achieve this, a supplementary discrete-time filter, estimating values of delayed samples of the measured signal, is attached to the output of the data acquisition system. This filter is identified with the use of classical estimation methods, based on a dynamical model of the data acquisition system. The definition of the cost function minimised during filter identification depends on the nature of the environment in which measurements are acquired. The considerations presented in this paper are illustrated with four corresponding simulated case study examples. They show how, in a very simple way, dynamical properties of data acquisition systems may be corrected, and thus improved, using the corresponding supplementary discrete-time filters. The improvement, measured by the correction quality index introduced in the paper, was from a few times up to more than 100. The paper also raises the issue of obtaining models for tuning of the supplementary discrete-time filter. The considerations presented may be applied to formulate the artificial intelligence of data acquisition systems as well as sensors. Finally, the paper proposes to implement this intelligence as a knowledge base of the expert system.
