Wearable sweat sensors have the potential to provide clinically meaningful information associated with the health and disease states of individuals. Current sensors mainly rely on enzymes and antibodies as biorecognition elements to achieve specific quantification of metabolite and stress biomarkers in sweat. However, enzymes and antibodies are prone to degrade over time, compromising the sensor performance. Here, we introduce a wearable plasmonic paper–based microfluidic system for continuous and simultaneous quantitative analysis of sweat loss, sweat rate, and metabolites in sweat. Plasmonic sensors based on label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can provide chemical “fingerprint” information for analyte identification. We demonstrate the sensitive detection and quantification of uric acid in sweat at physiological and pathological concentrations. The well-defined flow characteristics of paper microfluidic devices enable accurate quantification of sweat loss and sweat rate. The wearable plasmonic device is soft, flexible, and stretchable, which can robustly interface with the skin without inducing chemical or physical irritation.

The controllable response of materials to small-molecule absorbates helps control the information duration on rewritable paper., Controlling the duration that information lasts on paper so that it disappears as desired is crucial for information security. However, this area is rarely studied. Here, we report [TEMA]2SbCl5 (1, TEMA+ = methyltriethylammonium), [TEA]2SbCl5 (2, TEA+ = tetraethylammonium), [TEBA]2SbCl5 (3, TEBA+ = benzyltriethylammonium), and [Ph4P]2SbCl5 (4, Ph4P+ = tetraphenylphosphonium) with structure-dependent reversible photoluminescent switching induced by the absorption and thermal release of small guest molecules including H2O, methanol, and ethylene glycol. Comparing the structural disorder levels, bond lengths, and luminescent Stokes shifts of the compounds aided in understanding their selective absorption behavior. Our results indicated that the information duration on the rewritable paper coated with the title compounds is easily tuned by changing the cation of the compounds, the type of guest molecules, and laser heating power. Our study opens previously unidentified avenues for information security and extends the potential applications of rewritable paper.

A Science Advances paper concluding that GREs do not predict who will get a physics Ph.D. has many statistical errors., A recent paper in Science Advances by Miller et al. concludes that Graduate Record Examinations (GREs) do not help predict whether physics graduate students will get Ph.D.’s. Here, I argue that the presented analyses reflect collider-like stratification bias, variance inflation by collinearity and range restriction, omission of parts of a needed correlation matrix, a peculiar choice of null hypothesis on subsamples, blurring the distinction between failure to reject a null and accepting a null, and an unusual procedure that inflates the confidence intervals in a figure. Release of results of a model that leaves out stratification by the rank of the graduate program would fix many of the problems.

Lunaria annua plants grow fruits in the form of mechanically strong, low-density (70% air), reflective cellulose sheets., Bright, iridescent colors observed in nature are often caused by light interference within nanoscale periodic lattices, inspiring numerous strategies for coloration devoid of inorganic pigments. Here, we describe and characterize the septum of the Lunaria annua plant that generates large (multicentimeter), freestanding iridescent sheets, with distinctive silvery-white reflective appearance. This originates from the thin-film assembly of cellulose fibers in the cells of the septum that induce thin-film interference–like colors at the microscale, thus accounting for the structure’s overall silvery-white reflectance at the macroscale. These cells further assemble into two thin layers, resulting in a mechanically robust, iridescent septum, which is also significantly light due to its high air porosity (>70%) arising from the cells’ hollow-core structure. This combination of hierarchical structure comprising mechanical and optical function can inspire technological classes of devices and interfaces based on robust, light, and spectrally responsive natural substrates.

Stacked paper skiving paves the way for industrial manufacturing of paper-based analytical devices for barcode assays., This paper shows that stacked sheets of paper preincubated with different biological reagents and skiving them into uniform test paper sheets allow mass manufacturing of multiplexed immunoassay devices and simultaneous detection of multiplex targets that can be read out by a barcode scanner. The thickness of one sheet of paper can form the width of a module for the barcode; when stacked, these sheets of paper can form a series of barcodes representing the targets, depending on the color contrast provided by a colored precipitate of an immunoassay. The uniform thickness of sheets of paper allows high-quality signal readout. The manufacturing method allows highly efficient fabrication of the materials and substrates for a straightforward assay of targets that range from drugs of abuse to biomarkers of blood-transmitted infections. In addition, as a novel alternative to the conventional point-of-care testing method, the paper-based barcode assay system can provide highly efficient, accurate, and objective diagnoses.

Origami-inspired self-folding graphene papers show remote control grasping, manipulation, and walking behaviors., Origami-inspired active graphene-based paper with programmed gradients in vertical and lateral directions is developed to address many of the limitations of polymer active materials including slow response and violent operation methods. Specifically, we used function-designed graphene oxide as nanoscale building blocks to fabricate an all-graphene self-folding paper that has a single-component gradient structure. A functional device composed of this graphene paper can (i) adopt predesigned shapes, (ii) walk, and (iii) turn a corner. These processes can be remote-controlled by gentle light or heating. We believe that this self-folding material holds potential for a wide range of applications such as sensing, artificial muscles, and robotics.

The sulfate-reducing bacteria and related corrosion can be inhibited by charge-reversal surfactant antibiotic material., The corrosions caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are serious problems in petroleum exploitation and transportation, which can lead to safety problems, environmental pollutions, and economic losses. Here, a charge-reversal surfactant antibiotic material N-dodecyl-1-carboxylic acid-1-cyclohexenyl-2-carboxamide (C12N-DCA) is designed and synthesized. C12N-DCA is a negatively charged surfactant, which cannot be adsorbed by soil and rock in a large amount. Therefore, it can reach the “lesion location”, with enough concentration. After being hydrolyzed and charge reversed under the acceleration of H2S produced by SRB, C12N-DCA becomes a positively charged surfactant dodecane ammonium salt to kill SRB. Through a simulating experiment, it is found that C12N-DCA can reach the SRB inhibition ratio of almost 100%, and it can reduce iron corrosion by 88%. Such an antibiotic material or its homologs may be added to the chemical flooding fluids, killing SRB during petroleum exploitation and reducing the SRB-induced corrosion in the petroleum exploitation and transportation.

Stable isotope labeling of agricultural polyesters enables demonstration of their microbial utilization in soils., Plastic materials are widely used in agricultural applications to achieve food security for the growing world population. The use of biodegradable instead of nonbiodegradable polymers in single-use agricultural applications, including plastic mulching, promises to reduce plastic accumulation in the environment. We present a novel approach that allows tracking of carbon from biodegradable polymers into CO2 and microbial biomass. The approach is based on 13C-labeled polymers and on isotope-specific analytical methods, including nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the biodegradability of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), an important polyester used in agriculture, in soil. Carbon from each monomer unit of PBAT was used by soil microorganisms, including filamentous fungi, to gain energy and to form biomass. This work advances both our conceptual understanding of polymer biodegradation and the methodological capabilities to assess this process in natural and engineered environments.

Organic fertilizer from recycled biowaste was identified as a vehicle for entry of microplastic particles into the environment., The contamination of the environment with microplastic, defined as particles smaller than 5 mm, has emerged as a global challenge because it may pose risks to biota and public health. Current research focuses predominantly on aquatic systems, whereas comparatively little is known regarding the sources, pathways, and possible accumulation of plastic particles in terrestrial ecosystems. We investigated the potential of organic fertilizers from biowaste fermentation and composting as an entry path for microplastic particles into the environment. Particles were classified by size and identified by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. All fertilizer samples from plants converting biowaste contained plastic particles, but amounts differed significantly with substrate pretreatment, plant, and waste (for example, household versus commerce) type. In contrast, digestates from agricultural energy crop digesters tested for comparison contained only isolated particles, if any. Among the most abundant synthetic polymers observed were those used for common consumer products. Our results indicate that depending on pretreatment, organic fertilizers from biowaste fermentation and composting, as applied in agriculture and gardening worldwide, are a neglected source of microplastic in the environment.

A new graphene structure allowing unprecedented stretchability in graphene electrodes was designed., Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, are attractive for both conventional semiconductor applications and nascent applications in flexible electronics. However, the high tensile strength of graphene results in fracturing at low strain, making it challenging to take advantage of its extraordinary electronic properties in stretchable electronics. To enable excellent strain-dependent performance of transparent graphene conductors, we created graphene nanoscrolls in between stacked graphene layers, referred to as multilayer graphene/graphene scrolls (MGGs). Under strain, some scrolls bridged the fragmented domains of graphene to maintain a percolating network that enabled excellent conductivity at high strains. Trilayer MGGs supported on elastomers retained 65% of their original conductance at 100% strain, which is perpendicular to the direction of current flow, whereas trilayer films of graphene without nanoscrolls retained only 25% of their starting conductance. A stretchable all-carbon transistor fabricated using MGGs as electrodes exhibited a transmittance of >90% and retained 60% of its original current output at 120% strain (parallel to the direction of charge transport). These highly stretchable and transparent all-carbon transistors could enable sophisticated stretchable optoelectronics.

Replacing petroleum by biomass can be economically feasible by generating revenue from the three primary biomass constituents., The production of renewable chemicals and biofuels must be cost- and performance- competitive with petroleum-derived equivalents to be widely accepted by markets and society. We propose a biomass conversion strategy that maximizes the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (up to 80% of the biomass to useful products) into high-value products that can be commercialized, providing the opportunity for successful translation to an economically viable commercial process. Our fractionation method preserves the value of all three primary components: (i) cellulose, which is converted into dissolving pulp for fibers and chemicals production; (ii) hemicellulose, which is converted into furfural (a building block chemical); and (iii) lignin, which is converted into carbon products (carbon foam, fibers, or battery anodes), together producing revenues of more than $500 per dry metric ton of biomass. Once de-risked, our technology can be extended to produce other renewable chemicals and biofuels.

Since the early patch-clamp electrophysiology studies, the details of the ion permeation mechanism have remained elusive. Here, we combine molecular dynamics simulations of a zebrafish GlyR-⍺1 model devoid of the intracellular domain with mutagenesis and single-channel electrophysiology of the full-length human GlyR-⍺1. We show that lateral fenestrations between subunits in the extracellular domain provide the main translocation pathway for chloride ions to enter/exit a central water-filled vestibule at the entrance of the transmembrane channel. In addition, we provide evidence that these fenestrations are at the origin of current rectification in known anomalous mutants and design de novo two inward-rectifying channels by introducing mutations within them. These results demonstrate the central role of lateral fenestrations on synaptic neurotransmission. Selective degradation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) via autophagy (ER-phagy) is initiated by ER-phagy receptors, which facilitate the incorporation of ER fragments into autophagosomes. FAM134 reticulon family proteins (FAM134A, FAM134B, and FAM134C) are ER-phagy receptors with structural similarities and nonredundant functions. Whether they respond differentially to the stimulation of ER-phagy is unknown. Here, we describe an activation mechanism unique to FAM134C during starvation. In fed conditions, FAM134C is phosphorylated by casein kinase 2 (CK2) at critical residues flanking the LIR domain. Phosphorylation of these residues negatively affects binding affinity to the autophagy proteins LC3. During starvation, mTORC1 inhibition limits FAM134C phosphorylation by CK2, hence promoting receptor activation and ER-phagy. Using a novel tool to study ER-phagy in vivo and FAM134C knockout mice, we demonstrated the physiological relevance of FAM134C phosphorylation during starvation-induced ER-phagy in liver lipid metabolism. These data provide a mechanistic insight into ER-phagy regulation and an example of autophagy selectivity during starvation. We thank G. Diez Roux and P. Transcriptional variability facilitates stochastic cell diversification and can in turn underpin adaptation to stress or injury. We hypothesize that it may analogously facilitate progression of premalignancy to cancer. To investigate this, we initiated preleukemia in mouse cells with enhanced transcriptional variability due to conditional disruption of the histone lysine acetyltransferase gene Kat2a. By combining single-cell RNA sequencing of preleukemia with functional analysis of transformation, we show that Kat2a loss results in global variegation of cell identity and accumulation of preleukemic cells. Leukemia progression is subsequently facilitated by destabilization of ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis, which confer a transient transformation advantage. The contribution of transcriptional variability to early cancer evolution reflects a generic role in promoting cell fate transitions, which, in the case of well-adapted malignancies, contrastingly differentiates and depletes cancer stem cells. That is, transcriptional variability confers forward momentum to cell fate systems, with differential multistage impact throughout cancer evolution. Lateral flow assays (LFAs) use capillary flow of liquids for simple detection of analytes. While useful for spontaneously wicking samples, the capillary flow inherently limits performing complex reactions that require timely application of multiple solutions. Here, we introduce a technique to control capillary flow on paper by imprinting roadblocks on the flow path with water-insoluble ink and using the gradual formation of a void between a wetted paper and a sheath polymer tape to create timers. Timers are drawn at strategic nodes to hold the capillary flow for a desired period and thereby enable multiple liquids to be introduced into multistep chemical reactions following a programmed sequence. Using our technique, we developed (i) an LFA with built-in signal amplification to detect human chorionic gonadotropin with an order of magnitude higher sensitivity than the conventional assay and (ii) a device to extract DNA from bodily fluids without relying on laboratory instruments.

Dramatic, short-term improvements in the global environment have accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic. Intrigued by these observations, we commissioned a series of papers for Science Advances dedicated to studies of pandemics from an environmental perspective. The first in this series is a paper by Liu et al . on the decline of nitrogen dioxide over China since the outbreak of COVID-19. Collectively, the series will explore how the Earth system as a whole – not just the human societies developed on it – is affected by pandemics like COVID-19, and how environmental conditions can influence the spread and severity of infection. The responses of governments around the world to the COVID-19 catastrophe is an ongoing, essentially uncontrolled experiment. It has been proposed that the environmental and immune pressures associated with different contexts of infection have different consequences for the associated bacterial populations, affecting drug susceptibility and the emergence of resistance. However, there is little concrete evidence for this model. We prospectively collected sputum samples from 18 newly diagnosed and treatment-naïve patients with tuberculosis and sequenced 795 colony-derived Mtb isolates. Mutant accumulation rates varied considerably between different bacilli isolated from the same individual, and where high rates of mutation were observed, the mutational spectrum was consistent with reactive oxygen species-induced mutagenesis. Elevated bacterial mutation rates were identified in isolates from HIV-negative but not HIV-positive individuals, suggesting that they were immune-driven. Roughly half of U.S. counties do not provide defense counsel at bail hearings, and few studies have documented the potential impacts of legal representation at this stage. This paper presents the results from a field experiment in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, that provided a public defender at a defendant’s initial bail hearing. The presence of a public defender decreased the use of monetary bail and pretrial detention without increasing failure to appear rates at the preliminary hearing. The intervention did, however, result in a short-term increase in rearrests on theft charges, although a theft incident would have to be at least 8.5 times as costly as a day in detention for jurisdictions to find this tradeoff undesirable.

Skin-interfaced wearable systems with integrated microfluidic structures and sensing capabilities offer powerful platforms for monitoring the signals arising from natural physiological processes. This paper introduces a set of strategies, processing approaches, and microfluidic designs that harness recent advances in additive manufacturing [three-dimensional (3D) printing] to establish a unique class of epidermal microfluidic (“epifluidic”) devices. A 3D printed epifluidic platform, called a “sweatainer,” demonstrates the potential of a true 3D design space for microfluidics through the fabrication of fluidic components with previously inaccessible complex architectures. These concepts support integration of colorimetric assays to facilitate in situ biomarker analysis operating in a mode analogous to traditional epifluidic systems. The sweatainer system enables a new mode of sweat collection, termed multidraw, which facilitates the collection of multiple, independent sweat samples for either on-body or external analysis. Field studies of the sweatainer system demonstrate the practical potential of these concepts.

Researchers working with administrative crime data often must classify offense narratives into a common scheme for analysis purposes. No comprehensive standard currently exists, nor is there a mapping tool to transform raw descriptions into offense types. This paper introduces a new schema, the Uniform Crime Classification Standard (UCCS), and the Text-based Offense Classification (TOC) tool to address these shortcomings. The UCCS schema draws from existing efforts, aiming to better reflect offense severity and improve type disambiguation. The TOC tool is a machine learning algorithm that uses a hierarchical, multilayer perceptron classification framework, built on 313,209 hand-coded offense descriptions from 24 states, to translate raw descriptions into UCCS codes. We test how variations in data processing and modeling approaches affect recall, precision, and F1 scores to assess their relative influence on model performance. The code scheme and classification tool are collaborations between Measures for Justice and the Criminal Justice Administrative Records System.

While global patterns of human genetic diversity are increasingly well characterized, the diversity of human languages remains less systematically described. Here we outline the Grambank database. With over 400,000 data points and 2,400 languages, Grambank is the largest comparative grammatical database available. The comprehensiveness of Grambank allows us to quantify the relative effects of genealogical inheritance and geographic proximity on the structural diversity of the world's languages, evaluate constraints on linguistic diversity, and identify the world's most unusual languages. An analysis of the consequences of language loss reveals that the reduction in diversity will be strikingly uneven across the major linguistic regions of the world. Without sustained efforts to document and revitalize endangered languages, our linguistic window into human history, cognition and culture will be seriously fragmented. Systems with programmable and complex shape morphing are highly desired in many fields wherein sensing, actuation, and manipulation must be performed. Living organisms use nonuniform distributions of their body structural composition to achieve diverse shape morphing, motion, and functionality. This paper proposes a single-step aniso-electrodeposition method for fabricating modular microrobots (MMRs) with distinct functions in each modular segment. By programming the electric field, the microscale stripe-shaped structure can be endowed with diverse shape-morphing capabilities, such as spiraling, twisting, bending, and coiling. The proposed fabrication method can develop MMRs with multiple independent modules onto which cells, drugs, and magnetic nanoparticles can be loaded to achieve multifunctionality. Supramolecular frameworks have been widely synthesized for ion transport applications. However, conventional approaches of constructing ion transport pathways in supramolecular frameworks typically require complex processes and display poor scalability, high cost, and limited sustainability. Here, we report the scalable and cost-effective synthesis of an ion-conducting (e.g., Na + ) cellulose-derived supramolecule (Na-CS) that features a three-dimensional, hierarchical, and crystalline structure composed of massively aligned, one-dimensional, and ångström-scale open channels. Using wood-based Na-CS as a model material, we achieve high ionic conductivities (e.g., 0.23 S/cm in 20 wt% NaOH at 25 °C) even with a highly dense microstructure, in stark contrast to conventional membranes that typically rely on large pores (e.g., submicrometers to a few micrometers) to obtain comparable ionic conductivities. This synthesis approach can be universally applied to a variety of cellulose materials beyond wood, including cotton textiles, fibers, paper, and ink, which suggests excellent potential for a number of applications such as ion-conductive membranes, ionic cables, and ionotronic devices.

Photonic artificial intelligence has attracted considerable interest in accelerating machine learning; however, the unique optical properties have not been fully utilized for achieving higher-order functionalities. Chaotic itinerancy, with its spontaneous transient dynamics among multiple quasi-attractors, can be employed to realize brain-like functionalities. In this paper, we propose a method for controlling the chaotic itinerancy in a multi-mode semiconductor laser to solve a machine learning task, known as the multi-armed bandit problem, which is fundamental to reinforcement learning. The proposed method utilizes ultrafast chaotic itinerant motion in mode competition dynamics controlled via optical injection. We found that the exploration mechanism is completely different from a conventional searching algorithm and is highly scalable, outperforming the conventional approaches for large-scale bandit problems. This paper provides the first comprehensive sourcing analysis of the tin ingots carried by the well-known Late Bronze Age shipwreck found off the Turkish coast at Uluburun (ca. 1320 BCE). Using lead isotope, trace element, and tin isotope analyses, this study demonstrates that ores from Central Asia (Uzbekistan and Tajikistan) were used to produce one-third of the Uluburun tin ingots. The remaining two-thirds were derived from the Taurus Mountains of Turkey, namely, from stream tin and residual low-grade mineralization remaining after extensive exploitation in the Early Bronze Age. The results of our metallurgical analysis, along with archaeological and textual data, illustrate that a culturally diverse, multiregional, and multivector system underpinned Eurasian tin exchange during the Late Bronze Age. The demonstrable scale of this connectivity reveals a vast and disparate network that relied as much on the participation of small regional communities as on supposedly hegemonic institutions of large, centralized states.

Machine learning (ML) methodology used in the social and health sciences needs to fit the intended research purposes of description, prediction, or causal inference. This paper provides a comprehensive, systematic meta-mapping of research questions in the social and health sciences to appropriate ML approaches by incorporating the necessary requirements to statistical analysis in these disciplines. We map the established classification into description, prediction, counterfactual prediction, and causal structural learning to common research goals, such as estimating prevalence of adverse social or health outcomes, predicting the risk of an event, and identifying risk factors or causes of adverse outcomes, and explain common ML performance metrics. Such mapping may help to fully exploit the benefits of ML while considering domain-specific aspects relevant to the social and health sciences and hopefully contribute to the acceleration of the uptake of ML applications to advance both basic and applied social and health sciences research.

Coherent optomechanical interaction between acoustic and optical waves known as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can enable ultra-high resolution signal processing and narrow linewidth lasers important for next generation wireless communications, precision sensing, and quantum information processing. While SBS has recently been studied extensively in integrated waveguides, many implementations rely on complicated fabrication schemes, using suspended waveguides, or non-standard materials such as As$_2$S$_3$. The absence of SBS in standard and mature fabrication platforms prevents large-scale circuit integration and severely limits the potential of this technology. Notably, SBS in standard silicon nitride integration platform is currently rendered out of reach due to the lack of acoustic guiding and the infinitesimal photo-elastic response of the material. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate advanced control of backward SBS in multilayer silicon nitride waveguides. By optimizing the separation between two silicon nitride layers, we unlock gigahertz acoustic waveguiding in this platform for the first time, leading up to 15 $\times$ higher SBS gain coefficient than previously possible in silicon nitride waveguides. Using the same principle, we experimentally demonstrate on-demand inhibition of SBS by preventing acoustic guiding in the waveguide platform. We utilize the enhanced SBS gain to demonstrate a microwave photonic notch filter with high rejection (30 dB). We accomplish this in a low-loss, standard, and versatile silicon nitride integration platform without the need of suspending the SBS-active waveguide or hybrid integration with other materials., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

The advancement of electronic devices has enabled researchers to successfully emulate human synapses, thereby promoting the development of the research field of artificial synapse integrated soft robots. This paper proposes an artificial reciprocal inhibition system that can successfully emulate the human motor control mechanism through the integration of artificial synapses. The proposed system is composed of artificial synapses, load transistors, voltage/current amplifiers, and a soft actuator to demonstrate the muscle movement. The speed, range, and direction of the soft actuator movement can be precisely controlled via the preset input voltages with different amplitudes, numbers, and signs (positive or negative). The artificial reciprocal inhibition system can impart lifelike motion to soft robots and is a promising tool to enable the successful integration of soft robots or prostheses in a living body.

MOXIE [Mars Oxygen In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) Experiment] is the first demonstration of ISRU on another planet, producing oxygen by solid oxide electrolysis of carbon dioxide in the martian atmosphere. A scaled-up MOXIE would contribute to sustainable human exploration of Mars by producing on-site the tens of tons of oxygen required for a rocket to transport astronauts off the surface of Mars, instead of having to launch hundreds of tons of material from Earth’s surface to transport the required oxygen to Mars. MOXIE has produced oxygen seven times between landing in February 2021 and the end of 2021 and will continue to demonstrate oxygen production during night and day throughout all martian seasons. This paper reviews what MOXIE has accomplished and the implications for larger-scale oxygen-producing systems.

Chemical monitoring communicates diverse environmental information from industrial and biological processes. However, promising and sustainable systems and associated inspection devices that dynamically enable on-site quality monitoring of target chemicals confined inside transformable and opaque channels are yet to be investigated. This paper designs stretchable photo-sensor patch sheets for nonsampling, source-free, and label-free on-site dynamic chemical monitoring of liquids flowing inside soft tubes via simple deformable surface wrapping. The device integrates carbon nanotube–based broadband photo-absorbent thin films with multilayer-laminated stretchable electrodes and substrates. The patterned rigid-soft structure of the proposed device provides durability and optical stability against mechanical deformations with a stretchability range of 70 to 280%, enabling shape-conformable attachments to transformable objects. The effective use of omnidirectional and transparent blackbody radiation from free-form targets themselves allows compact measurement configuration and enhances the functionality and simplicity of this scheme, while the presenting technology monitors concentrations of arbitrary water-soluble chemicals.

Using unique, new, matched UMETRICS data on people employed on research projects and Author-ity data on biomedical publications, this paper shows that National Institutes of Health funding stimulates research by supporting the teams that conduct it. While faculty—both principal investigators (PIs) and other faculty—and their productivity are heavily affected by funding, so are trainees and staff. The largest effects of funding on research output are ripple effects on publications that do not include PIs. While funders focus on research output from projects, they would be well advised to consider how funding ripples through the wide range of people, including trainees and staff, employed on projects.

Whether the goal is to estimate the number of people that live in a congressional district, to estimate the number of individuals that have died in an armed conflict, or to disambiguate individual authors using bibliographic data, all these applications have a common theme - integrating information from multiple sources. Before such questions can be answered, databases must be cleaned and integrated in a systematic and accurate way, commonly known as record linkage, de-duplication, or entity resolution. In this article, we review motivational applications and seminal papers that have led to the growth of this area. Specifically, we review the foundational work that began in the 1940's and 50's that have led to modern probabilistic record linkage. We review clustering approaches to entity resolution, semi- and fully supervised methods, and canonicalization, which are being used throughout industry and academia in applications such as human rights, official statistics, medicine, citation networks, among others. Finally, we discuss current research topics of practical importance.

Achieving stimulus-responsive ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in organic materials especially with full-color tunable emissions is attractive and important but rarely reported. Here, a strategy was reported to realize stimulus-responsive RTP effect with color-tunable emissions by using water as solvent in the preparation process without any organic solvent through covalent linkage of arylboronic acids with different π conjugations and polymer matrix of polyvinyl alcohol. The yielded polymer films exhibit outstanding RTP performance (2.43 s). Furthermore, an excitation-dependent RTP film was obtained, and the afterglow color changes from blue to green, then to red as the excitation wavelength increases. The RTP property of all the above materials is sensitive to water and heat stimuli, because the rigidity of the system could be broken by water. Last, they were successfully applied in a multilevel information encryption and multicolor paper and ink.

Background The B.1.526 variant (WHO designation: Iota) is a SARS-CoV-2 variant of interest, as classified by both the US CDC and the WHO. Due to a lack of extensive genomic sequencing and contact tracing data, its key epidemiological properties have not been well characterized. Methods We utilized nine epidemiological and population datasets collected in New York City (NYC), where B.1.526 emerged, and comprehensive modeling to estimate the changes in transmissibility, immune escape potential, and infection fatality risk (IFR) for B.1.526. Findings Estimated transmission rate in the neighborhood where B.1.526 was initially detected was consistently higher than other neighborhoods in NYC and further increased during the weeks preceding B.1.526 detection, likely due to its early spread there. Overall, models estimated that B.1.526 had transmissibility about 15-25% higher than previously circulating variants and that it could escape immunity in 0-10% of previously infected persons. In addition, B.1.526 substantially increased IFR in older adults: by 46% (95% CI: 7.4 – 84%) among 45-64 year-olds, 82% (95% CI: 20 – 140%) among 65-74 year-olds, and 62% (95% CI: 45 – 80%) among 75+ during Nov 2020 – Apr 2021, compared to baseline IFR estimated for preexisting variants. Interpretation New variants like B.1.526 likely spread in the population weeks prior to detection, and partial immune escape (e.g., resistance to therapeutic antibodies) could offset prior medical advances and increase IFR. Early preparedness for and close monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants, their epidemiological characteristics, and disease severity are thus crucial to COVID-19 pandemic response as it remains a global public health threat. Research in context Evidence before this study We searched PubMed for studies published through June 23, 2021 on the B.1.526 (Iota) SARS-CoV-2 variant, using the terms “B.1.526”, “Iota variant” and “COVID-19”, or “Iota variant” and “SARS-CoV-2”. Our search returned 14 papers, from which we read the abstracts and identified 8 relevant studies. The majority (7 of 8) of these studies focused on identifying the specific mutations, namely L5F, T95I, D253G, additionally E484K or S477N for two different subclades (i.e., B.1.526-S:E484K and B.1.526-S:S477N) and a closely related subclade (i.e., B.1.526-S:L452R or B.1.526.1) as defined by spike mutations D80G, Δ144, F157S, L452R, T859N, and D950H; these studies also examined changes in neutralizing ability of convalescent plasma and vaccinee sera (mild reductions by ∼2-4 fold were reported) and changes in neutralizing ability of monoclonal antibodies (substantial reductions for some monoclonal antibodies were reported). Two studies used genomic data from GISAID to estimate the growth rate of B.1.526 during January - March 2021 and reported that it was similar to the Alpha variant (i.e., B.1.1.7), a SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern with around 50% higher transmissibility than preexisting variants. However, an epidemiological study using individual patient data from January 1 to April 5, 2021 reported no increases in secondary attack rate among contacts of B.1.526 cases, compared to non-VOC/VOI variants. This latter study also showed preliminary evidence that B.1.526 did not increase the risk of hospitalization or death, nor of vaccine breakthrough or reinfection. Added value of this study We utilized multiple datasets collected in New York City – where B.1.526 emerged – and model-inference methods to reconstruct the transmission dynamics, including the initial emergence of B.1.526 in the fall of 2020. We estimated that B.1.526 had a moderate increase (15-25%) in transmissibility and could escape immunity in 0-10% of previously infected individuals. In addition, B.1.526 substantially increased the infection-fatality risk (IFR) among adults 65 or older by >60% during Nov 2020 – Apr 2021, compared to baseline risk estimated for preexisting variants. Implications of all the available evidence New SARS-CoV-2 variants like B.1.526 could increase transmissibility, evade prior immunity, and increase disease severity. Description, Ge/MoS2 van der Waals heterostructure enables bias-dependent selective detection of visible and near infrared., Multispectral photodetectors are emerging devices capable of detecting photons in multiple wavelength ranges, such as visible (VIS), near infrared (NIR), etc. Image data acquired with these photodetectors can be used for effective object identification and navigations owing to additional information beyond human vision, including thermal image and night vision. However, these capabilities are hindered by the structural complexity arising from the integration of multiple heterojunctions and selective absorbers. In this paper, we demonstrate a Ge/MoS2 van der Waals heterojunction photodetector for VIS- and IR-selective detection capability under near-photovoltaic and photoconductive modes. The simplified single-polarity bias operation using single pixel could considerably reduce structural complexity and minimize peripheral circuitry for multispectral selective detection. The proposed multispectral photodetector provides a potential pathway for the integration of VIS/NIR vision for application in self-driving, surveillance, computer vision, and biomedical imaging.

Description, This study finds that no-excuse absentee voting policies did not meaningfully increase turnout in the 2020 U.S. election., The 2020 U.S. election saw a record turnout, saw a huge increase in absentee voting, and brought unified national Democratic control—yet these facts alone do not imply that vote-by-mail increased turnout or benefited Democrats. Using new microdata on millions of individual voters and aggregated turnout data across all 50 states, this paper offers a causal analysis of the impact of absentee vote-by-mail during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. Focusing on natural experiments in Texas and Indiana, we find that 65-year-olds voted at nearly the same rate as 64-year-olds, despite the fact that only 65-year-olds could vote absentee without an excuse. Being just old enough to vote no-excuse absentee did not substantially increase Democratic turnout relative to Republican turnout. Voter interest appeared to be more important in driving turnout across vote modes, neutralizing the electoral impact of Democrats voting by mail at higher rates during the historic pandemic.

Description, Carbothermal shock can produce a high surface coverage of metal nanoparticles by introducing cellulose., The carbothermal shock (CTS) method has attracted considerable attention in recent years because it enables the generation of finely controlled polyelemental alloy nanoparticles (NPs). However, fabricating high surface coverage of NPs with minimized exposure of the carbon substrate is essential for various electrochemical applications and has been a critical limitation in CTS method. Here, we developed a methodology for creating NPs with high surface coverage on a carbon substrate by maximizing defect sites of cellulose during CTS. Cu NPs with high surface coverage of ~85%, various single NPs and polyelemental alloy NPs were densely fabricated with high uniformity and dispersity. The synthesized Cu NPs on cellulose/carbon paper substrate were used in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction showing selectivity to ethylene of ~49% and high stability for over 30 hours of reaction. Our cellulose-derived CTS method enables the greater availability of polyelemental NPs for a wide range of catalytic and electrochemical applications.

This paper reports on the engineering of nanointerfaces in diamond-like C/Cr nanolayered coatings to tailor their characteristics including the degree of intermixing, defects, and Cr growth mode. The result was the fabrication of a coating with subnanometer-thick periodic albeit discrete Cr interlayers. This was achieved using our patented deposition technique. This coating contained less interfacial defects compared to classic nanolayered coatings with continuous nanolayers and presented record-breaking wear rates at the macroscale. Finite Element analysis was performed and micropatterning strategy was used to reduce the wear rate further. Last, we report on discovery of a dimensionless parameter that can be used to predict the wear resistance of carbon-based nanolayered coatings.

The fabrication strategy of homojunction-based PTFTs and logic circuits demonstrated the realization of foldable electronics., An increase in the demand for completely foldable electronics has motivated efforts for the development of conducting polymer electrodes having extraordinary mechanical stability. However, weak physical adhesion at intrinsic heterojunctions has been a challenge in foldable electronics. This paper reports the completely foldable polymer thin-film transistors (PTFTs) and logic gate arrays. Homojunction-based PTFTs were fabricated by selectively doping p-type diketopyrrolopyrrole-based semiconducting polymer films with FeCl3 to form source/drain electrodes. The doping process caused a gradual work function change with depth, which promoted charge injection to semiconducting regions and provided a low contact resistance. In addition, the interfacial adhesion in the PTFTs was improved by interfacial cross-linking between adjacent component layers. The electrical performance of the resulting PTFTs was maintained without noticeable degradation even after extreme folding, suggesting that the proposed fabrication strategy can further be applied to various semiconducting polymers for the realization of foldable electronics.

To this end, the 15th Conference of Parties (COP 15) for Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Kunming, China this October will focus on developing a post-2020 global biodiversity framework to replace the 2011–2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (including the Aichi Biodiversity Targets). Given the failure to meet previous policy targets, how can the global scientific community provide strong science-based evidence to improve biodiversity conservation as well as address conflicts with the demands of an increasing human population? In this special collection, leading conservation scientists identify grand challenges for biodiversity conservation, conflicts, and trade-offs between conservation and the exploitation of natural resources, and strategies for sustainable utilization and management of biodiversity at global, regional, or national scales. Papers or patents that cite past work of a particular age distribution double their chances of being a hit., Scientists and inventors can draw on an ever-expanding literature for the building blocks of tomorrow’s ideas, yet little is known about how combinations of past work are related to future discoveries. Our analysis parameterizes the age distribution of a work’s references and revealed three links between the age of prior knowledge and hit papers and patents. First, works that cite literature with a low mean age and high age variance are in a citation “hotspot”; these works double their likelihood of being in the top 5% or better of citations. Second, the hotspot is nearly universal in all branches of science and technology and is increasingly predictive of a work’s future citation impact. Third, a scientist or inventor is significantly more likely to write a paper in the hotspot when they are coauthoring than whey they are working alone. Our findings are based on all 28,426,345 scientific papers in the Web of Science, 1945–2013, and all 5,382,833 U.S. patents, 1950–2010, and reveal new antecedents of high-impact science and the link between prior literature and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas.

Differential cross-sectional cusps, occurring at the vicinity of newly open channels, are used for enhanced avionic sensing., Typical sensors detect small perturbations by measuring their effects on a physical observable, using a linear response principle (LRP). It turns out that once LRP is abandoned, new opportunities emerge. A prominent example is resonant systems operating near Nth-order exceptional point degeneracies (EPDs) where a small perturbation ε ≪ 1 activates an inherent sublinear response ∼εN≫ε in resonant splitting. Here, we propose an alternative sublinear optomechanical sensing scheme that is rooted in Wigner’s cusp anomalies (WCAs), first discussed in the framework of nuclear reactions: a frequency-dependent square-root singularity of the differential scattering cross section around the energy threshold of a newly opened channel, which we use to amplify small perturbations. WCA hypersensitivity can be applied in a variety of sensing applications, besides optomechanical accelerometry discussed in this paper. Our WCA platforms are compact, do not require a judicious arrangement of active elements (unlike EPD platforms), and, if chosen, can be cavity free.

This paper reveals that XBAT31 ubiquitinates and degrades ELF3 to attenuate its inhibitory effects on PIF4., Elevated ambient temperature has wide effects on plant growth and development. ELF3, a proposed thermosensor, negatively regulates protein activity of the growth-promoting factor PIF4, and such an inhibitory effect is subjected to attenuation at warm temperature. However, how ELF3 stability is regulated at warm temperature remains enigmatic. Here, we report the identification of XBAT31 as the E3 ligase that mediates ELF3 degradation in response to warm temperature in Arabidopsis. XBAT31 interacts with ELF3, ubiquitinates ELF3, and promotes ELF3 degradation via the 26S proteasome. Mutation of XBAT31 results in enhanced accumulation of ELF3 and reduced hypocotyl elongation at warm temperature. In contrast, overexpression of XBAT31 accelerates ELF3 degradation and promotes hypocotyl growth. Furthermore, XBAT31 interacts with the B-box protein BBX18, and the XBAT31-mediated ELF3 degradation is dependent on BBX18. Thus, our findings reveal that XBAT31-mediated destruction of ELF3 represents an additional regulatory layer of complexity in temperature signaling during plant thermomorphogenesis.

A detailed analysis of contact electrification between metals reveals a mechanism leading to unexpectedly high voltages., Although the electrical charging of objects brought into contact has been observed for at least 2000 years, the details of the underlying mechanism are still not yet fully understood. The present paper deals with the very basic process of contact electrification between two metals. We have developed an experimental method to follow the charge of a small sphere bouncing on a grounded planar electrode on a time scale down to 1 μs. It reveals that the sphere is discharged in the moment of contact, which lasts about 6 to 8 μs. However, at the very moment of disruption of the electrical contact, it regains charge far beyond the expectation according to the contact potential difference. The excess charge rises with increasing contact area.

I show that sequences of neutral mutations follow a “maximal entropy random walk,” a canonical Markov chain on graphs with nonlocal, nondiffusive dynamics. I revisit M. Smith’s word-game model of evolution in this light, finding that the likelihood of certain sequences of substitutions can decrease with the population size. These counterintuitive results underscore the fertility of the interface between evolutionary dynamics, information theory, and physics.

A successful emulation of human conscious responses is demonstrated through an artificial stimulus-response system., A stimulus-response system and conscious response enable humans to respond effectively to environmental changes and external stimuli. This paper presents an artificial stimulus-response system that is inspired by human conscious response and is capable of emulating it. The system is composed of an artificial visual receptor, artificial synapse, artificial neuron circuits, and actuator. By incorporating these artificial nervous components, a series of conscious response processes that markedly reduces response time as a result of learning from repeated stimuli are demonstrated. The proposed artificial stimulus-response system offers the promise of a new research field that would aid the development of artificial intelligence–based organs for patients with neurological disorders.
