Magnetic circuit components have long been the largest and most difficult components to miniaturize. Printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication methods cannot achieve small diameter, high aspect-ratio vias for high winding turn numbers to achieve high inductance, and microelectronics methods cannot achieve the high-quality and thick ferrite core materials. In this paper, we present an alternative breakthrough method of printed circuit fabrication to significantly reduce the effective via diameter for embedded magnetic devices, boosting the inductance per unit area. To reduce the effective via diameter, high-density via plugs are ex-situ fabricated and shaped, and then embedded into PCB substrate in the same process as standard magnetic core embedding. The structure of the plug is such that precise placement within the substrate, or alignment to the plug with the winding pattern, is not necessary. Devices presented in this paper use via plugs with an effective diameter of 40 μm and a theoretically unlimited aspect ratio, though refinements in the plug fabrication process are expected to reduce the via diameter down to 10μm. The process is experimentally demonstrated with a 14-turn racetrack shaped transformer; novel diagnostic methods using magneto-optic garnet films to image current paths are also demonstrated.

This paper proposes a rotor design method suitable for double-layer interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (DIPMSM), which can reduce electromagnetic torque ripple and at the same time reduce the electromagnetic noise of the motor. In previous studies, the inverse cosine function (ICF) was used to modify the rotor shape for making the air gap flux density distribution sinusoidal under no-load conditions, which can reduce the torque ripple. However, conventional ICF can only be used in a single-layer interior rotor structure. Consequently, this paper proposes a piecewise inverse cosine function (PICF) based on ICF, which can be applied to DIPMSM. To verify the improvement of the proposed method in the electromagnetic and noise aspects of the motor, the electromagnetic model and a noise prediction model of the 36-slot/8-pole motor are established by the finite element method. The PICF model is compared with the prototype in the aspects of electromagnetic performance and noise. The torque ripple is reduced by 54.16%, from ± 2.4 Nm to ± 1.1 Nm, and the electromagnetic noise is reduced by about 4.9 dB. Finally, the accuracy of the noise prediction model is verified by the noise test of the prototype.

It is well known that the slotted motor has higher power and torque ripple than the slotless motor. But how much the power and torque ripple can increase is rarely reported. In this paper, the analytical method is used to compare the torque of the slotless and slotted motor. First, the armature reaction field and open circuit PM field are solved by the subdomain model. Then, the torque is calculated by the Maxwell stress tensor method. Moreover, we also obtain the back electromotive force (back EMF) and cogging torque. At last, the average torque and the torque ripple of the slotless and slotted motor are compared and discussed. The above analytical model is verified by the 3D FEM and experiment. Results show that the average torque and torque ripple of the slotted motor have increased 52.6% and 22.5 times compared with that of the slotless motor. This paper will provide a useful reference for the design of both the slotted and slotless ultra-high speed AFPM motors.

In this paper, a novel winding switching control strategy is proposed to extend the speed range of a consequent-pole ferrite-PM hybrid-excited machine (CPFPM-HEM) for electric vehicle application. The key is that in low-speed range, the AC armature winding and DC field winding are connected in series to achieve large starting torque, while in high-speed range, DC field winding are injected with adjustable DC currents to realize variable speed constant voltage of AC armature winding. Furthermore, consequent-pole rotor is used to reduce the usage of the permanent magnet (PM). In the meantime, ferrite PMs are used to replace rare-earth PMs to reduce the cost with the shortage of rare earth resources. In this paper, the machine configuration, operation principle with dual excitation sources, flux modulation principle and winding switching strategy are illustrated in detail. Then, the electromagnetic performance of the CPFPM-HEM in different speed ranges is investigated. Finally, the speed range extension with winding switching strategy is verified by the Maxwell/Simplorer co-simulation.

With the rapid development of vehicle information systems, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been widely used to enhance information experience. A linear vibration motor is usually placed behind the LCD to provide sufficient haptic feedback. A linear vibration motor with a large permanent magnet causes massive flux leakage around the display. As a result, it may cause unpredictable harm to people with implanted medical devices. Therefore, in this paper, a novel magnetic circuit design of a slim-width type linear vibration motor is introduced to reduce the static magnetic flux leakage. The haptic performance of the slim-width type linear vibration motor was analyzed using the electromagnetic-mechanical coupling method. Three types of experimental results were obtained to verify the analysis results. In conclusion, compared to the prototype motor, the slim-width type linear vibration motor proposed in this paper exhibits significant flux leakage reduction of 94.01% and 96.34% at the measuring positions. Furthermore, the slim-width type linear vibration motor exhibits an acceleration similar to that of the prototype motor.

This paper reviews the power density and torque density of permanent magnet motor technology that is currently commercially developed for use in electric aircraft. The review shows that in order to meet the ambitious electrical motor power density goals recently set forth the power density of a motor needs to more than double. The requirements imposed by the maximum propeller rotor tip-speed as well as the diameter constraints set by the aerodynamic requirements will further limit the practical electric motor design sizing options. This paper advocates for considering using magnetic gearing and using an integrated contra-rotating motor propeller co-design approach as a way of both increasing propulsive thrust performance and thereby increasing the aircrafts overall power density.

This paper proposes a new probe for suppressing the vibration component from the detection signal in eddy current testing. The work is motivated by the desire to develop a new inspection method that can suppress the effects of vibration generated in the manufacturing process of metal parts such as tubes, rods and wires in order to make the current manufacturing process faster. The novelty of the probe lies in its simultaneous use of self and mutual inductions. The proposed probe uses the different effects of the self and mutual inductions to suppress the vibration component. This paper simplifies the discussion by limiting the dynamic vibration of the test specimen to static displacement. The coil distance between the excitation and detection coils should be adjusted for each test specimen for the most effective suppression of the displacement signal. The simulation and measurement results show that the coil distance in the mutual induction probe can control the phase of the displacement signal. It was confirmed that the amplitude of displacement signals measured by the proposed probe was under 6 % of the amplitude measured by the self-induction probe when the optimal coil distance was used. The results obtained suggest that the proposed probe can suppress the vibration component.

A permanent magnet synchronous reluctance machine (PMSynRM) is studied in this paper. It has a stack of surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) rotor and a stack of synchronous reluctance (SynR) rotor, which are axially combined on the shaft. Unlike the traditional PM-assisted SynR machine (PMASynRM), the magnets are not located in the flux barriers of the SynR rotor, therefore, the magnets and flux barriers have no more geometric confliction between them. The two rotor stacks can be circumferentially shifted to any relative angle. Clearly, the shifting angle and the axial length ratio between the two rotor stacks, together with the phase angle of the armature current vector, influence the motor performance, and their optimal design is detailed in this paper. Analysis of the prototypes shows that the studied PMSynRM evidently exhibits higher torque density than the conventional PMASynRM.

A number of transport vehicles have been fitted with electric traction motors and their inverters. The traction motor is required to continue to operate even if the inverter is under fault conditions. We propose a motor with two controllable rotors for a traction motor, which consists of 2 rotors and 1 stator. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant control method for a two-controllable-rotor motor using a 6-phase inverter. The operational principle of the two-controllable-rotor motor is described. The mathematical model under fault tolerant control is shown, and a fault-tolerant control method for the two-controllable-rotor motor is described. The proposed fault tolerant control method is verified by conducting finite element analysis and carrying out measurements on a prototype.

Gyrotrons are high-frequency, high-power microwave sources with potential applications in plasma generation, energy generation, spectroscopy, and security. The Department of Science and Technology initiated the development of a 42 GHz, 200 kW, continuous wave (CW) gyrotron for the Indian Tokamak system through a multi-institutional project. The activity is targeted toward indigenous development of India’s first high-power gyrotron. In gyro-devices, frequency of operation is determined by the cyclotron frequency, and thereby the magnetic field. The development of a high-field intensity normal conducting cavity magnet was an imperative step during the testing and integration of the gyrotron tube assembly to achieve the desired beam transmission with a moderate operating cost. A high and spatially homogeneous magnetic field (1.61 T) is required to be established in the beam–wave interaction region by the cavity magnet. The desired magnetic field, as a function of axial distance from the gun to the collector, is governed by the requirements of gun optics, focusing field in the interaction region, and the adiabatic expansion of the beam into the collector. A water cooled electromagnet has been designed to produce the requisite magnetic field in the cavity region over an axial length of 40 mm with field homogeneity better than ±0.35%. Magnet design was optimized to meet the field requirements in the cavity and cathode gun. Magnetic field simulations were carried out in conjunction with the electrostatic field and space charge analysis. This paper presents finite element computations, design optimization, development and testing of a continuous duty iron core electromagnet for a first harmonic interaction mode (TE03) gyrotron cavity. Magnetic, electrical, thermal, and hydraulic design of the electromagnet is discussed in this paper.

An increasing need for fast and reliable models has led to a continuous development of Fourier-based (FB) analytical modeling. This paper presents an overview of the techniques that are currently available in FB modeling for electric machines. By coupling that overview to the most relevant literature related to the subject, an interesting starting point is provided for anyone who wants to use or improve FB models. The following seven aspects of FB models are discussed in detail: 1) the magnetic potential (scalar or vector potential); 2) the coordinate system and the solution of the partial-differential equations for each magnetic potential and for each coordinate system; 3) the way in which time dependence is accounted for; 4) the implementation of the source terms; 5) the possibilities to account for slotted structures; 6) the modeling of eccentricity; and 7) the post-processing computation of physical quantities, such as flux density, electromotive force, torque, losses, and eddy currents in conductive objects. Furthermore, this paper gives the closed form solution of the Laplace, Poisson, and Helmholtz equations in each coordinate system. In addition, this paper tackles other important features of FB models such as computational time reduction and coupling the machine model to an electric circuit.

This paper presents the comparative analysis of the characteristic features of two 4/2 switched reluctance motors (SRMs) designed for a very high-speed drive. The use of two-phase construction of SRM with irregular air-step gap makes it possible to achieve the required parameters of the drive. The analysis presents the comparison of two distinct structures designed for the same very high-speed drive. In this paper, a novel mathematical model that takes into account the nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit is presented. The results of numerical calculations and laboratory tests of the influence of the possible use of an anisotropic magnetic material in the rotor magnetic circuit are presented. The influence of control parameters on the motor properties is specified. Both the structures were compared with the respect to employed electric parameters. It is important for high-speed structures that a maximal speed of the motor should not affect permissible parameters of the rotor in a negative way. The high-speed structures should be properly designed to ensure a safety margin. The selected laboratory test results that show electric parameters are presented following the specification of the first critical speed based on the Campbell diagram, the maximum speed limited by allowable stresses. It was shown that both the structures analyzed fulfill the condition of a safety margin. A number of thermal problems of the structures analyzed are discussed. The design assumptions related to the possibility of using a higher current density in the motor windings were verified under laboratory conditions.

In this paper, the magnetorheological (MR) absorber with multi-stage parallel coil structure is designed, which can realize various magnetic field variations through the working coil combination to meet different impact applications. To analyze the influence of different magnetic field distributions on the mechanical characteristics of the MR absorber and provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent open-loop control strategy, the coupling simulation analysis and impact test are carried out in this paper. Based on the COMSOL Multiphysics software, the conjugate heat transfer model and magneto-flow coupling simulation model are established. Considering the shear thinning effect of the MR fluid in the impact process, the modified Herschel–Bulkley constitutive model of MR fluid is embedded into the coupling model. The influence of four parameters on the mechanical performance of the MR absorber is considered, which includes the piston movement speed, the current amplitude, the number of working coils, and the distribution state of the magnetic field. In addition, the orthogonal evaluation method is used to quantitatively investigate the influence degree of these factors. Finally, the impact tests are conducted and verified the simulation results, that is, the magnetic field distribution near the fluid channel inlet has a more pronounced throttling effect and can get a greater output force under the symmetrical distribution of magnetic field.

This paper proposes a novel modular relieving-dc-saturation Vernier reluctance machine for electric vehicle application, which integrates the merits of a robust structure, controllable excitation field, strong fault-tolerant capacity, and enhanced torque density, benefiting from its special relieving-dc-saturation design. In the proposed machine, zero-sequence current establishes a modular magnetic path and functions as the dominant excitation source for the torque generation. Especially, slot permanent magnets are introduced into each module, which mitigates the saturation effect in stator core caused by dc-biased flux with the zero-sequence current source. Therefore, the proposed machine can achieve enhanced torque density with relatively high current density. In this paper, the machine structure and operation principle are illustrated in detail, with its electromagnetic performance evaluated by time-stepping finite-element analysis. It is revealed that, due to its relieving-dc-saturation ability, torque density of the proposed machine is enhanced by about 20% with high current density.

This paper proposes a new cableless transportation system that associates a magnetic actuator with the piping system in which it travels. To achieve high-speed transport within the pipe, the proposed actuator must show excellent movement characteristics. An aluminum pipe was cut in half longitudinally, and an alternating current was passed through the cut piping. The proposed cableless actuator powered by an electric current supplied by an electric brush was demonstrated to be capable of high-speed movement in a curved pipe. A scheme of attaching a cargo container to a nodal point of the actuator using a flexible rod was also proposed. The experimental results show that the actuator can be driven through the pipe even when the curved pipe is nearly U-shaped. Furthermore, the cableless actuator transporting a cargo mass of 30 g can be driven at a speed of 87.9 cm/s in a curved aluminum pipe with a curvature angle of 22.5°. The method established in this paper is considered to be applicable to the high-speed transport of lightweight reagents, bacteria, and microfluidic chips.

Extensive research and experiments have shown that rotational core loss, which usually exists in the corner joints of multi-phase transformers and behind the teeth of rotational motors, may amount to more than 50% of the total core loss. The frequency of rotational magnetic field can reach even kilohertz level in high-speed motors. In this paper, a new magnetizer of double-yoke vertical structure made of ultrathin steel sheet (0.05 mm) and the corresponding $B$ – $H$ sensing structure are proposed and constructed. Both the alternating and 2-D rotational magnetic properties for non-oriented steel B35A210 and grain-oriented steel B27R090 are measured and characterized up to kilohertz. The magnetic anisotropy of silicon steel is observed and analyzed from its origin mechanism. Moreover, the alternating, 2-D circular and elliptical rotational core losses are compared and discussed. This paper can provide a reference for core loss modeling and the calculation of electrical machines or transformers under different magnetization conditions.

In this paper, a new hybrid stator fabrication with 2-D steel sheets lamination and 3-D end cap structure for high-speed motor application is provided. With the additional overhead end cap design, the new motor not only features lower iron losses in high frequency and reduces copper losses like traditional soft magnetic composite (SMC) motor but also achieves higher permeability and lower production cost at the same time. In this paper, the motor characteristics, i.e., back electromotive force and efficiency between the traditional lamination, SMC, and the new hybrid design are investigated by 3-D FEA simulation. Moreover, a prototype is fabricated by 3-D printing for the verification of the analytical and simulation results.

In this paper, a novel switched reluctance motor with two magnetically dependent stator and rotor sets (TMDSRM) is proposed and tested. The novelty of the TMDSRM is that there is an assistant exciting winding (short for exciting winding), which is placed between the two-stator sets and can be energized by controllable dc current to boost the air-gap flux density and to improve the output torque and torque density. What deserves to be mentioned the most is that the air-gap flux density is compensated when armature winding is in commutation because of the exciting winding carrying dc current and being permanently energized, and thus, the torque ripple is reduced. This paper describes the magnetic structure and the principle of the proposed motor in detail. Moreover, finite-element analysis has been carried out to investigate the influence of exciting field on electromagnetic torque of the motor. A prototype TMDSRM is manufactured, and the experimental results are presented.

This paper proposes a flux-intensifying permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (FI-PMa-SynRM) using surface-inset permanent magnet (PM) instead of embedded PM in the rotor. The proposed FI-PMa-SynRM employs a small amount of PM that is inset on the rotor surface facing $d$ -axis instead of facing $q$ -axis as in common PMa-SynRMs. It also differs from conventional flux-intensifying interior PM motor, where the PM is embedded inside the rotor. The proposed motor enables making use of the arrangements of two types of flux barriers (FBs): the cutoff FB and the magnet FB, collectively referred to the outer FBs, to enhance the torque output and reduce the torque ripple. The first objective in this paper is to explain the principles of the proposed FI-PMa-SynRM, and the second is to analyze the proposed technique for enhancement of the torque output with small PM volume while keeping the lowest possible torque ripple. The finite-element analysis is employed to validate the proposed motor and analyses, and the results demonstrate their advantages and effectiveness.

This paper describes an investigation into the combined effects of magnetoconvection and an externally applied magnetic field on the thermal performance of vegetable oil-based magnetic nanofluids with different volume fractions of magnetic nanoparticles. The mineral-based oil has conventionally been used in power transformers because it has high dielectric strength and good cooling performance under normal operating conditions. Because of the environmental impact, eco-friendly vegetable-based transformer oils have been substituted for mineral-based insulating oils. To date, related studies have only reported on the characteristics of dielectric breakdown in vegetable oil-based magnetic nanofluids without any real electromagnetic systems. Furthermore, the thermal characteristics of vegetable oil-based magnetic nanofluids have not yet been fully investigated. Thus, the aim of this paper was to examine the cooling performance by adding magnetic nanoparticles to the vegetable-based transformer oil. To quantitatively analyze this effect, a multi-physics technique that incorporates magnetic-thermal-fluidic fields was developed as based on quasi-static magnetic field approximation and conjugate heat transfer. To validate the numerical results, corresponding experiments were successfully carried out via application in a simple electromagnetic system with varying insulating liquids.

A separate-stator modular machine with biased flux is proposed in this paper. In this machine, the windings and the permanent magnets are located in two separate parts of the stator, which favors the heat dissipation and magnetic saturation reduction of the machine. With the specially designed stator structure, a biased flux can be introduced to flexibly regulate the excitation field by injecting a zero-sequence current into the phase windings, so that a wide operation speed range can be achieved. Moreover, a modular structure is adopted to simplify the automated manufacture assembly. In this paper, the machine configuration and the working principle are first illustrated. The effect of the design parameters on its torque capability is then investigated. A coupled electromagnetic-thermal optimization method based on the genetic algorithm and finite-element method is proposed to improve the torque performance of the machine.

This paper investigates the feasibility of novel data-driven deep learning (DL) models to predict the solution of Maxwell’s equations for low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) devices. With ground truth (empirical evidence) data being generated from a finite-element analysis solver, a deep convolutional neural network is trained in a supervised manner to learn a mapping for magnetic field distribution for topologies of different complexities of geometry, material, and excitation, including a simple coil, a transformer, and a permanent magnet motor. Preliminary experiments show DL model predictions in close agreement with the ground truth. A probabilistic model is introduced to improve the accuracy and to quantify the uncertainty in the prediction, based on Monte Carlo dropout. This paper establishes a basis for a fast and generalizable data-driven model used in the analysis, design, and optimization of EM devices.

Hybrid excited (HE) machines with both permanent magnet (PM) and field winding excitations, inherit the benefits of PM machines and improve the flux regulation capability. This paper proposes a novel consequent pole HE (CPHE) machine. The PM pole pair and the iron pole are alternately placed on the rotor, while both the armature winding and ac field winding are located on the stator slots, which achieve the brushless excitation. Since the flux of the field winding goes through the iron poles, the PM and field winding exhibit parallel magnetic paths, which is favorable for the flux regulation and avoids the irreversible demagnetization of the PMs. In this paper, the operating principle of the proposed CPHE machine is illustrated. Moreover, the electromagnetic performance, including back electromotive force, torque, and flux regulation range considering different coil pitch of field winding is analyzed by finite-element analysis. It is demonstrated that the proposed machine exhibits flexible flux regulation capability, which is suitable for applications requiring wide speed range operation or voltage regulation.

The nonlinear ac-dc composite electric field in the winding area of the converter transformer was studied by considering the frequency and temperature dependence of the insulation materials in this paper. First, the relative permittivity and conductivity of vegetable oils, mineral oils, and insulation papers were measured at different frequencies and temperatures. Then, the oil-paper insulation structure model of one 500 kV converter transformer valve-side winding was established. The nonlinear composite electric field of the converter transformer insulation with vegetable oils and mineral oils was analyzed. The maximum voltage of the converter transformer with mineral oils is 524.9 kV, at -20 °C and that with vegetable oils is 497.1 kV. The results show that the calculation method proposed in this paper is more accurate than the traditional superposition method.

The utilization of a bismuth-substituted iron garnet as a magnetooptic Faraday rotator (MOFR) has been reported for all-optical networking purposes as well as for other applications. Our measurements and observations demonstrate that the MOFR saturates once a significantly large magnetic field (>225 G) is applied. After the applied magnetic field enters the saturation region, the material’s magnetic domains can become pinned at intermediate levels of magnetization. Pinning in this form has not been reported nor well studied for this application. In this paper, a method to detect and describe anomalous pinning in terms of Faraday rotation is presented. Measurements on the changes in the state of polarization that a pinned material produces are examined. This paper will also present practical methods for unpinning the MOFR material, which are traditionally considered to be challenging.

In this paper, a stabilized reduced-order model based on the gappy proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique is applied to an eddy-current problem with the non-linear material property. A classical magnetodynamic finite element formulation based on the magnetic vector potential is used as reference and starting point to build up the reduced models. The computational complexity of the non-linear problem might be reduced by the discrete empirical interpolation method-POD technique, but the eddy current effects may make this method unstable. This paper presents a method for position measurement under uncertainty using magnetic sensing. The statistical transformation of magnetic field data in the presence of noise is first developed. An unscented Kalman filter is then formulated based on a stochastic dynamic model that would allow for position estimation from magnetic field sensing. Finally, applications of magnetic sensing-based positioning in robotics and vehicle guidance are provided to validate the algorithm. The methods presented in this paper extend filtering theory for extracting positioning information from magnetic fields.

Non-oriented (NO) electrical steels are widely used as core materials in rotating electrical machines, whereas for measurements under alternating magnetization (AM), standardized methods exist; measurements under rotational magnetization (RM) prove to represent a significant problem. In this paper, we performed measurements of both circular rotational and alternating losses in rolling and transverse directions for four types of NO materials of different Si contents and thicknesses by means of a hexagonal rotational single-sheet tester at different frequencies and flux density values. The losses were measured by the electrodynamical method and for confirmation also by the thermal (rise-of-temperature) method. The estimated rotational losses by means of established well-known methods are correlated with the measured ones. Literature reports attempt to estimate losses $P^{\mathrm {(RM)}}$ for circular RM on the basis of losses $P^{\mathrm {(AM)}}$ for AM. A loss ratio factor $\Gamma = P^{\mathrm {(RM)}}/P^{\mathrm {(AM)}}$ is defined which is reported to be close to $\Gamma = 2$ . In this paper, $\Gamma $ factors were determined for three different grades of material. The results indicate a rather weak dependence of $\Gamma $ on the grade, however, a strong one on the intensity $B$ of induction. In approximation, $\Gamma = 2$ is valid for rather weak induction of the order $B = 0.6$ T. Induction increases in steps of $\Delta B = 0.1$ T yield decreases of loss ratio by about $\Delta \Gamma = 3$ %. This enables a rough estimation of rotational losses. However, the possibility of estimation is restricted to the circular case of constant modulus and angular velocity of the $B$ vector. Other cases are characterized by different values of both eddy current losses and hysteresis losses, RM involving completely different domain reconstructions compared to AM. For increased frequency, the decrease in $\Gamma $ becomes weaker due to more dominant eddy current losses.

Being much more rugged than a rotor made of traditional steel sheets, a solid rotor is frequently used in high-power high-speed induction machines (IMs). Furthermore, by a solid-rotor machine, a higher rotating speed can be achieved. However, the solid rotor also has certain disadvantages, the relatively high solid-rotor eddy-current losses being the most serious one. Basically, solid-rotor eddy-current losses are mainly induced by time–spatial air-gap flux density high-order harmonics. The suppression of the high-order harmonics is the key means to mitigate the rotor eddy-current losses. In this paper, a novel computational model is proposed for evaluating the rotor harmonic eddy-current losses of a 2 MW, 12 000 r/min IM. The model was built on a special machine referred to as a virtual permanent magnet harmonic machine (VPMHM). The model was constructed by applying the finite-element method (FEM), and it is based on the time–spatial harmonics produced by a rotating magnet with sinusoidal magnetization. The VPMHM model links the air-gap flux density harmonics directly to the specific rotor eddy-current losses. Furthermore, according to the proposed model, three options, namely, the use of air-gap permeance modifying notches on the stator teeth, semimagnetic wedges, and their combination, were investigated in detail for mitigating the rotor eddy-current losses in the motor nominal operating point. The results and conclusions in this paper are based on the FEM analysis.

This paper proposes an all-in-one system for hyperloop that conducts propulsion, levitation, and guidance. Currently demand on high-speed long-distance transportation is increasing, so that hyperloop is getting attention and studied hard globally. Hyperloop is a new innovative transportation in which a levitated subsonic speed train travels through a vacuum cylindrical tube. Hyperloop needs functions of propulsion, levitation, and guidance for its service, and many devices are necessary for those functions. In the tube, a constrained space, many devices make the entire system complicated, and the size of the vehicle and tube are increased. Therefore, the costs of maintenance, manufacture, and construction are increased and control of each device becomes very difficult. But a non-symmetric double-sided linear induction motor (NSDLIM), the subject of this paper, is an all-in-one system that could conduct all functions. In this paper, the concept of NSDLIM was introduced and its possibility was suggested. Requirements of NSDLIM were investigated considering very high acceleration, velocity, and low air pressure. An NSDLIM model was designed and analyzed by using the finite-element method. Then, NSDLIM parameters that affect performance were investigated and adjusted to improve performance. The derived model performance was shown, and its possibility was considered.

Brushless doubly fed machine (BDFM), is a new type of machine with special structure, shows promising features for the field of variable frequency speed regulation and wind power generation due to its inherent characteristics, which has the advantages of reliable operation, adjustable power factor, lower operation and maintenance costs as well as requiring a smaller capacity converter [1], [2]. Since core loss has an important effect on efficiency and temperature distribution, it is vital to accurately calculate such component in an optimal design procedure. Furthermore, rotor core loss is also a significant factor which can affect the performance characteristics of BDFM due to the complex magnetic field distribution and relatively high value of slip. Specifically, a novel hybrid rotor structure which is combined with magnetic barrier and assisted cage has better coupling ability than the commonly used rotor structures such as cage rotor and reluctance rotor is presented but it also increases the difficulty of core loss calculation. E&S model is a vector magnetic hysteresis property model [3], [4], in which H (magnetic field intensity) is dependent not only on B (magnetic flux density) but also on time derivative of B. Increase of core loss when the phase difference between B and H occurs, is well expressed in this method, while the conventional analysis was not able to consider the phase difference between B and H. Furthermore, the total core loss including both alternating and rotational losses can be directly calculated from the fundamental terms of obtained $B_{x}$, $B_{y}$, $H_{x}$ and $H_{y}$ without other fitting data, which can improve the core loss computation accuracy of BDFM with hybrid rotor in contrast with conventional core models. In this paper, an improved E&S model based on a 2-D rotational magnetic property analysis for core loss of BDFM with hybrid rotor is proposed by considering the high-order harmonic magnetic field. The finite element analysis model of BDFM with hybrid rotor is established. The core loss calculation results are compared with the simulation results to verify the correctness and feasibility of the proposed E&S model. Fig. 1 shows the finite element model, hybrid rotor of prototype and special points distribution diagram of BDFM with hybrid rotor. As shown in Fig. 1 (a)-(b), the cage bars are added on the non-magnetic layer of the radial magnetic barrier rotor, and the cage bars are respectively divided into concentric cage bar and common cage bar. There are two kinds of rotating magnetic fields with different poles and frequencies in the air-gap of BDFM, which renders that the air-gap magnetic density harmonic contents are rich and the magnetic properties of each part of core are different. According to the basic principle, structure characteristics and magnetic field distribution of BDFM with hybrid rotor, some special points of stator and rotor are analyzed and calculated. The relationship between B vector and H vector, and the relationship between the waveform of $B_{x}$, $B_{y}$ and the waveform of $H_{x}$, $H_{y}$, obtained by the combination of the improved E&S model and finite element analysis, is shown in Fig. 1 (c), which is seen that the phase between B and H is different. The improved E&S model can consider higher order harmonic magnetic field than the conventional E&S model. As shown in Fig. 2 (a), the stator and rotor core loss calculation process of BDFM with hybrid rotor is described by the flow diagram. The datum of $B_{x}$, $B_{y}$, $H_{x}$, $H_{y}$ are obtained by the combination of the improved E&S model and finite element method, and all order harmonic of $B_{x}$, $B_{y}$, $H_{x}$, $H_{y}$ are computed by fourier series expansion. Therefore, the total core loss of BDFM with hybrid rotor can be calculated by the formula in the flow diagram, where, $\rho$ is the magnetic material density, T is the period, $m$ is the amount of the special points, $n$ is the harmonic order, and $M_{i}$ is the mass. In addition, in order to verify the accuracy of the core loss calculation, the 2-D finite element model of BDFM with hybrid rotor is established, and the simulation results are shown in Fig. 2 (b). The validity and feasibility of the improved E&S model is verified by comparing with the simulation results. In addition, the full paper will present the detailed calculation procedure and analysis.

In this paper, an 18-slot/26-pole vernier permanent magnet synchronous machine (VPMSM) with coil pitch of two slot pitches is proposed based on a nine-slot/18-flux-modulation-pole/26-pole VPMSM with concentrated tooth-coil windings. Compared with the original VPMSM, the number of slots is doubled and the phase winding connection is adjusted to reduce the space harmonic content, the phase inductance, and hence, improve the power factor. This paper shows that the proposed VPMSM increases power factor from 0.73 to 0.95 with better torque and flux-weakening capability. Moreover, a series of VPMSMs with high-power factor is proposed from the same design principle and given design guidelines.

This paper proposes a diode-based multi-level cell spin–orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM) for high density memory applications. By stacking a shared diode over two in-parallel magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) that share a common heavy metal electrode, our proposed cell requires only one silicon-based transistor to access 2 bits. Having just one transistor to access 2 bits results in at least $2\times $ higher density when compared to various designs in the literature. Moreover, utilizing a high-density MRAM process, a $4F^{2}$ effective 1 bit area can be achieved. Furthermore, our proposed design maintains the high energy efficiency of the conventional SOT-MRAM. In addition, an improvement in figure of merit of at least 30% defined as energy area product is obtained compared to various designs. This paper also discusses the essential requirements to realize our proposed SOT-MRAM, such as the realization of diode MTJ stack and SOT-MTJs, with different critical currents and electrical resistances.

Iron loss prediction is very important for the evaluation of efficiency, temperature and demagnetization of electrical machines. The models developed in [1]–[4] are most commonly used iron loss models for electrical machine analyses. However, none of these iron loss models considers the influence of temperature, which has been experimentally confirmed in [5]. In [6], an improved iron loss model which can consider temperature dependencies of hysteresis and eddy current losses separately is developed. By applying the improved iron loss model, the temperature influence on the iron loss can be fully considered. It is then possible to couple the thermal and loss analyses with each other by utilizing the improved iron loss model, which will be the subject of this paper. The iron loss model developed in [4] is one of the most accurate iron loss models when the temperature is constant with the help of variable coefficients. The iron loss p Fe can be expressed as: Equation (1) where f is the frequency. B m is the peak value of alternating flux density. k h (f,B m ) and k e (f,B m ) are the hysteresis loss and the eddy current loss coefficients, respectively. It should be noted that the iron loss model (1) cannot consider the influence of temperature on iron loss while the temperature influences iron loss significantly. According to the iron loss model developed in [5], both the hysteresis loss k h (f,B m ) coefficient and the eddy current loss k e (f,B m ) coefficient vary not only with frequency and flux density but also with temperature. Therefore, the improved iron loss model is then developed and can be expressed as: Equation (2) where p Fe,T is the iron loss density at the actual temperature T. k h (T,f,B m ) and k e (T,f, B m ) are the hysteresis loss and eddy current loss coefficients, respectively. In order to evaluate the iron loss models in electrical machines, thermal tests and analyses are carried out in a 12-slot/10-pole IPM machine. The schematic diagram of the test system is shown in Fig. 1(a). The 12-slot/10-pole IPM machine is connected a three phase AC power source. The magnets are removed and the rotor is locked in order to eliminate magnet eddy current and mechanical losses. As shown in Fig. 1(b), four thermal couples are equipped in the electrical machine to measure the temperature at different positions, i.e. the stator tooth, the stator yoke, the rotor magnet slot and the rotor yoke. The temperatures are measured when the electrical machine is powered by the AC power source. For the temperature prediction, the iron losses are calculated by the existing model and the improved model, respectively. The thermal model of the IPM machine is also built in Motor-CAD. The thermal model is then analysed with calculated copper loss and iron losses. The predicted temperatures of the electrical machines can be obtained. Fig. 2 compares the measured and predicted results by the existing iron loss model and the improved model. It can be seen that the predicted temperatures by the existing iron loss model become inaccurate when the temperature is high. This is due to the fact that the existing iron loss model cannot consider the temperature dependency of the iron loss. The input iron loss for the thermal analysis keeps constant while the actual iron loss decreases significantly with the temperature rise. On the other hand, the predicted temperatures keep good accuracy when the temperature reaches 100 degrees Celsius or even higher. This is due to the fact that the improved iron loss model considers the temperature dependency of the iron loss. Input iron losses for the thermal analysis vary with the temperature rise. In other words, the thermal and loss analysis can be coupled with each other by utilising the improved iron loss model, which is more close to the actual condition in electrical machines. The details will be investigated and described in the full paper.

For testing a conductive pipeline, remote field eddy current testing (RFECT) is used, which is composed of solenoidal exciter coil and receiving sensor coils. In RFECT, there is remote field zone where the eddy current distributions are concentrated on the external surface of the pipe wall. Therefore, it is possible to detect a defect that occurs on the external surface of the pipe wall even if the receiving coils are located inside the pipe. From the measured coil signals, it is necessary to decompose background offset and predict the pattern of defect signal in order to estimate the defect size for the maintenance of underground pipelines eventually. In the process, the amplitude variations of the induced magnetic field at sensor coils are closely related to defect depth. Therefore, it is important to analyze and eliminate distortions of measured RFECT signals. This paper analyzes the effects of the induced magnetic field on the sensing signals with respect to different depth sizes in the RFECT system. The amplitude and the distribution pattern of defect signals are computed by a 3-D finite-element method and the method to eliminate the signal distortions caused by induced magnetic fields are presented. Simulated results in this paper agreed well with measuring ones.

A novel interior permanent magnet linear vernier machine (IPM-LVM) is proposed and analyzed in this paper. Compared to the existing surface-mounted permanent magnet linear vernier machine (SPM-LVM) and the SPM-LVM with Halbach arrays, the proposed machine can offer higher flux density in both the air-gap and armature iron core, which lead to a higher back electric motive force (back EMF) and higher thrust density under the same mover volume and heat capacity. Besides, it is proven that the proposed IPM-LVM also has a lower demagnetization risk compared to the SPM-LVM. Furthermore, in order to reduce the thrust ripple of the proposed machine, the three-sectional structure is adopted in this paper, which makes the proposed IPM-LVM exhibit high thrust density and low thrust ripple at the same time.

In this paper, in order to make a clear principal cause in increasing iron loss of amorphous wound cores in processing, effects of bending stress on magnetic characteristics of a Fe-based amorphous wound core are clarified. The amorphous magnetic materials have been widely used as a core material of power transformers to reduce iron loss due to their excellent soft magnetic characteristics. However, the amorphous magnetic material has an issue that the building factor (B.F.) is very large in comparison with that of grain-oriented electrical steel sheets. The amorphous transformers usually use a wound core formed by stacking plural amorphous sheets in different lengths. Bending stress is, therefore, generated at each corner of the wound core in processing. Due to this bending stress, the magnetic characteristics of the wound core deteriorate. The deterioration of magnetic characteristics of the wound amorphous core is so large because of the large magnetostriction constant. As a result, the B.F. of this material becomes larger. In order to remove the residual stress, which is generated in the wound core including the bending stress, the amorphous wound core is usually annealed in a magnetic field, which is called “a magnetic annealing.” In this paper, the effect of the magnetic annealing on the magnetic properties is studied experimentally by evaluating some wound amorphous model cores. As a result, a suitable magnetic annealing condition is clarified and the iron loss of the wound amorphous model core is reduced by 65.7%.

The non-destructive testing technique known as magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is used for the inspection of storage tank floors (mild steel plate). This paper focuses on the finite-element analysis of the velocity effects on the induced flux and its distribution in the plate thicknesses of 6 through to 20 mm thick 1020 grade steel. When there is a velocity difference between the plate and the excitation system, eddy currents are induced opposing the applied magnetic field distorting its profile. This has an adverse effect on MFL inspection by altering signal responses thus limiting achievable inspection velocities. An investigation of velocities ranging from 0.5 to 3 m/s is undertaken on both defect-free plates and plates containing spherical 40% through wall thickness defects simulated for both near/top and far/bottom surfaces. From the results, it is indicated that the flux density distribution through the plate decreases as a function of depth. Once a plate depth of 16 mm is reached, it is shown that the flux density is significantly reduced toward the underside of the plate. These combined effects influence defect detectability on larger plate thicknesses for the specific yoke design used in this paper.

In this paper, rotor inter-turn faults in salient-pole synchronous machines are investigated using finite-element analysis. The machine under study is a 22 MVA eight-pole hydropower generator with fractional-slot windings. Simulated faulty cases include 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 short-circuited turns (out of 58 turns) in one rotor pole. In the electromagnetic analysis, the effect of faults on airgap flux density and radial forces is studied. Furthermore, this paper investigates online detection of inter-turn faults using spectral analysis of stator voltage or current is studied. The amplitude of fault-related harmonics is investigated at various fault severities, as well as at no-load and full-load operations. This paper also discusses the effects of damper bars, an influence of parallel circuits in the stator windings, and influence of the pole pair number. In addition, a comparison between fault-related harmonics in the case of dynamic eccentricity and rotor inter-turn faults is presented. © 2018 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted. Cogging torque is due to the interaction between a magnet’s magnetomotive force and a slotted stator or rotor structure. In this paper, a compact equation for cogging torque is presented for surface-mounted permanent magnet motors. This equation has four terms of field interactions involving tangential and radial components of airgap flux density. These four terms are considered as sources of cogging. Variations of these sources with pole embrace are examined. In earlier publications, closed-form expressions for pole embrace corresponding to the minimum cogging were presented considering only radial fields. In this paper, an attempt is made to recognize the influence of tangential fields in cogging. The compact form given here distinctly reflects the significance of both radial and tangential field components. Furthermore, to study the trends of cogging sources with pole number and airgap radius, simplified expressions for harmonic content of field components are derived using the first-order binomial approximation. The analysis on cogging presented in this paper helps in determining search domains in which optimum embrace for minimum cogging can be found when both the radial and tangential field components are considered.

A computational technique is presented in this paper which improves finite element method (FEM) in solving inverse problems. Subregion method is used to select and isolate the area of interest where design parameters for defect shape are updated. An elastic mesh generator is developed in this paper to generate optimal meshes in the selected area to save connectivity matrix until having the most accurate design parameters. Using subregion FEM in solving inverse problems will help in minimizing processing time and memory usage in addition of reducing solution complexity. A 2-D eddy current testing (ECT) problem of detecting and characterizing the location and shape of a defect by separating the defect from entire domain is used to validate the presented subregion FEM algorithm. The elastic mesh generator is investigated to update the preselected design parameters of the defect in each iteration. This meshing technique adds the specialty of using subregion method in inverse problems where elements and nodes numberings are saved inside and outside the defect region. Both the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing optimization techniques are developed to get the accurate defect parameters. The presented subregion FEM results have been verified computationally using conventional FEM. Excellent results of signals agreement and processing time minimization with a factor of 90% with an accuracy of 98% have been achieved. In addition, the presented subregion FEM algorithm has been verified experimentally using aluminum (T6061-T6) and mild steel plate (0.15%–0.30% carbon and Fe) samples. This experiment is carried using an elongated excitation coil in a fixed position mounted on the top of the sample and tunneling magnetoresistive sensor to measure magnetic field. The measured magnetic fields were used as input to the inverse subregion FEM solver and the machined artificial defects were characterized with excellent accuracy.

This paper discusses the distribution of magnetic flux density inside a magnetic film covered on a microstrip line for developing a design rule of the magnetic-film-type noise suppressor. The measured and simulation results of the magnetic field distribution and conduction loss agree with each other. The distribution of magnetic flux density B inside the magnetic film can be confirmed numerically through the theoretical calculation of the characteristic length including the complex permeability of the magnetic film. These results demonstrate that the complex permeability of the magnetic film leads to a complex characteristic length and distributed magnetic poles and results in the alternated distribution of B vectors along the distance. These results also suggest that these distributed magnetic poles are required when the inductive crosstalk and conduction loss are considered in the design of patterned magnetic-film-type noise suppressor. Based on these results, this paper could be of great use for the quantitative evaluation of crosstalk between the aggressor and victim lines.

In this paper, adsorbents composed of reduced graphene oxide–CoFe2O4 ferrite–polyaniline (RGO/CF/PANI) nanocomposites have been synthesized by different techniques, namely, hydrothermal, graphite exfoliation, reduction, and polymerization. The adsorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The adsorption of uranium (VI) could be well described by the Langmuir and the pseudosecond-order models. The highest adsorption capacity of the composites for uranium (VI) was evaluated to be 2430 mg/g at pH = 5 and 25 °C. The uranium loaded RGO/CF/PANI could be readily separated from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field. This paper demonstrates an efficient and convenient approach for the adsorption of uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions.

One of the main engineering applications of ferrofluids is in magnetic fluid seals, working in rotary motion. An area, which has so far been insufficiently examined, is the mechanism of leaks between seal stages in this type of seal. This is an important issue in order to understand the principle of the seal operation and to properly design this type of seal. This paper presents the results of research into the mechanism of leaks between stages in multi-stage magnetic fluid seals. The tests were conducted when the pressure of the sealing air increased and reached its maximum value. The influence of the magnetic fluid properties, such as saturation magnetization or dynamic viscosity, was taken into account. Studies were performed for different seal temperatures. Experiments allowed models for determining the maximum pressure of the multi-stage seal to be proposed, based on the information about this pressure for a one-stage seal. This paper presents the comparative results of the critical pressure value obtained from experimental studies and calculations based on numerical simulations.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is highly sensitive to even a small amount of magnetic noise, and thus, a high-performance mag-netically shielded room (MSR) is essential. The shielding effect of a novel MSR should be predicted to verify whether it satisfies the required specifications of the MEG at the design stage. Therefore, an accurate prediction method based on the properties of shielding materials and the shape of the MSR is necessary. In this paper, we proposed a prediction method using a simple formula and permeability measured against very small magnetic field fluctuations. Using a ring-shaped test piece, permeability was measured against a very small magnetic field corresponding to the Rayleigh region, and the initial permeability and Rayleigh constant were estimated to determine the permeability calculated by the formula. The magnetic field generated inside the material was estimated by magnetic analysis, and it was confirmed that the permeability of the Rayleigh region should be used in the formula. To verify the prediction accuracy, we examined a simple example of a cylindrical shell by comparing the calculated results with the experimental results. It was confirmed that the pro-posed method is more accurate than the conventional method using the value of μ at 4 mA/cm.

The loss of doubly salient brushless motor (DSBLM) with rectangular wire armature winding mainly includes AC copper loss, iron loss and converter loss. The driving mode has a certain influence on the motor loss. Therefore, the loss characteristics of DSBLM with rectangular wire armature winding driven by brushless DC (BLDC) and brushless AC (BLAC) are comparatively studied in this paper. Firstly, the magnetic flux density waveforms of armature winding and stator under ideal currents drive are compared, and the waveform changes of AC copper loss and iron loss are analyzed. Secondly, the effect of PWM on motor loss for actual operation in two driving modes is studied. Thirdly, the converter loss of different driving modes is also considered. Finally, the theoretical analysis and simulation results are verified by the experimental results of a DSBLM. In BLAC driving mode, DSBLM with rectangular wire armature winding has better loss characteristics.

In this paper, two novel dual stator machines with different biased permanent magnet (PM) configurations are developed and comparatively studied. For the proposed machines, the PMs are only located in the inner stator, but with different configurations, i.e., surface-mounted PM (SPM) and interior PM (IPM), respectively. The machine topologies and operating principle are introduced first. Then, the electromagnetic characteristics, including open-circuit performance, torque characteristics, field weakening capability, loss and efficiency are comprehensively analyzed and compared by finite element method (FEM). The experimental validation are conducted to verify the FEM analyses.

This paper overviews novel magnetic-field-shifting techniques for enhancing the torque in a new class of asymmetric rotor pole interior permanent magnet (AIPM) machines. The principle for torque enhancement is introduced firstly. AIPM topologies are then categorized in terms of asymmetries and symmetricities of PM configuration and rotor core geometry. Subsequently, the merits and demerits of various AIPM rotor topologies in each category are analyzed and compared. Finally, torque capabilities of selected AIPM machines are compared.

This paper proposes an efficient surrogate-assisted design optimization method based on a multicriteria optimal Latin hypercube design (LHD) for multi-objective optimization of a surface-mounted permanent-magnet vernier machine (SPMVM). An improved iterated local search (ILS) method is proposed to optimize the spatial distribution uniformity and orthogonality of LHDs so that the data feature over the wide ranges of optimization variables can be captured more efficiently. Using the optimal LHD, a highly generalizable surrogate model can be trained with fewer samples, thus greatly reducing the required number of FEA cases and improving the optimization efficiency. A prototype corresponding to the optimal design is built and measured to validate the proposed method.

Stator and rotor cores of interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are usually saturated, and the saturation distribution and saturation depth vary with the stator current. Also, their rotor structures are complex; hence the saturation cannot be accurately reflected by a saturation factor. These considerations lead to existing equivalent air-gap length models of induction motors and inset permanent magnet (PM) motors no longer suitable for IPM motors. Therefore, based on the consideration of stator and rotor saturation, this paper proposes the equivalent air-gap length model of IPM motors expressed by magnetic potentials on the stator inner surface and the rotor outer surface. The proposed equivalent air-gap length model can accurately reflect the influences of complex structure and severe saturation of IPM motors. Compared with existing models, the proposed one is no longer uniquely determined by motor structure parameters; it is also a function of stator current and rotor position. Furthermore, the obtained equivalent air-gap length model is combined with the winding function and the modified winding function to solve the inductances under different stator currents and different rotor eccentricity states. Finally, the proposed method is verified by both finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments.
